Attorney General Rutledge speaks at Prairie County Farm Bureau meeting County roundtable discussion.) The AG also spoke about unsolicited phone calls using numbers and area codes that are similar to those of consumers. Presently phone companies don’t have the authority to shut down these phone calls, but she said that her office is working to overturn this rule. She asked everyone to let others know when scams happen. The opioid epidemic in Arkansas is a concern of Rutledge’s. She told the group that Arkansas is number one in the misuse of prescription drugs among young people between 12 and 17 years of age. “We leave our medicines out on the kitchen table,” she said. She stressed that all prescription medications should be kept in a safe place away from children

Lastly, Rutledge asked that everyone reach out to others even though they may disagree. “We are at a point in our state where civil discourse is lacking,” she said. “It is important that we sit together at the table and have reasonable conversations.” After Rutledge’s address, Farm Bureau Luke Hooks told attendees that a donation in Attorney General Rutledge’s honor would be presented to AIM. Next, Hooks presented the David Strohl family, Prairie County’s 2017 Farm Family of the Year, with a plaque in their honor. The Farm Bureau, along with the two county newspapers, the Grand

Attorney General Leslie Rutledge Arkansas Attorney General Leslie Rutledge was the guest speaker at the annual meeting of the Prairie County Farm Bureau which was held in the Parish Hall of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Tollville on Tuesday, September 12 at 7:00 p.m. The meeting was opened with an invocation given by Jackie Prince, and then dinner was served by the women of St. Peter’s Church. After the meal, Rutledge, Arkansas’ first woman Attorney General, spoke to the attendees about some of the issues that her office has addressed since her election to that office. She spoke about a previously “out of control” Environmental Protection Agency which she said is now under a new and better adminis-

trator, Scott Pruitt. She also said that her office has been challenging the Arkansas Game and Fish Department over wildlife habitats in the state. She said that the Consumer Protection Bureau was also “out of control”, and she talked about the skyrocketing cost of compliance over the past few years. Rutledge encouraged the members to give the AG’s office real-life examples of how various regulations and issues have been problematic for them. She told the group that she wants to make sure that there is no “disconnect” between Little Rock and the people. For this reason, she said, she will go to every county each year to talk with civic leaders. (See the story in this week’s Herald about her Prairie

ADH announces statewide mass flu vaccine clinics (Little Rock, Ark.) On September, 27, 2017 Prairie County Health Unit of the Arkansas Department of Health (ADH) will offer flu vaccinations at Hazen Community Center from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm. People should bring their insurance cards with them to the flu vaccine clinic. If they do not have insurance, or the insurance does not cover flu shots, the vaccine will be available at no charge. The Des Arc Mass Flu Clinic will be September 25 at Riverfront Park for the drive-thru or walk in at the Health Dept. at 204 Main St. 7:30-5:30. The ADH in Prairie County will also hold the annual flu clinic at the Hazen School District on October 10th and at the Des Arc School District on October 3. The Des Arc school clinic will serve the elementary school in the morning and the pre-K and high school in the afternoon. "We want Prairie County residents to stay healthy this flu season, and getting a yearly flu vaccination is the best line of protection," Rose Marie Knupp, Prairie County Health Unit Administrator, said. "We encourage everyone to come to the mass clinic or

the local health unit to get their flu shot." Even though new observations about the flu vaccine continue to be made, experts continue to recommend annual flu vaccinations for children and adults. The flu virus changes from year to year, and this year's vaccine protects against the flu viruses that are expected to cause the most illness this flu season. "The flu should not be taken lightly," said Dirk Haselow, MD, State Epidemiologist at ADH. "We are encouraging everyone to get a flu shot to protect themselves and their families, because it is hard to predict in advance how severe the flu season is going to be this year." People of all ages can get the flu. Certain people are more likely to have serious health problems if they get the flu. This includes older adults, young children, pregnant women, people with chronic health conditions (such as asthma, diabetes, or heart disease), people who smoke, and people who live in nursing homes. Therefore, ADH strongly recommends that people in these groups get a flu vaccine. It is also recommended that

friends, family members and people who provide care to people in these groups also get a vaccinenot only to protect themselves but also to decrease the possibility that they might expose the people they love and care for to the flu. The flu vaccine is safe and does not cause the flu. Some people may have mild soreness and redness near the site of the shot and a low fever or slight headache. There are very few medical reasons to skip the flu vaccine. These include lifethreatening allergic reactions to a previous dose of the flu vaccine or an ingredient in the vaccine. People with allergies to vaccine ingredients can often receive the vaccine safely, if it is given in a doctor's office where they can be monitored. The flu is easily spread through coughing or sneezing and by touching something, such as a door knob, with the virus on it and then touching their nose or mouth. So good hand washing habits are important in preventing the flu. However, the best way to prevent the flu is to get the vaccine. For more information, go to www.healthy.arkansas.go v or www.flu.gov.

AG Rutledge holds local roundtable discussion Arkansas’ Attorney General Leslie Rutledge met with area community and faith leaders on Tuesday, September 12, at the Hazen Community Center to discuss local issues of concern. The meeting opened with a discussion about veterans issues led by Prairie County Veterans Service Officer, Larry Robinson. He talked about veterans’ medical treatment outside of the Veteran’s Administration hospital system, scams targeting veterans, and a new veteran’s court in Little Rock. Rutledge told those present about a 2015 law concerning domestic violence. According to this law, officers are required to give the victims of domestic abuse a card called Laura’s Card. The card, Rutledge said, was named in honor of Laura Webb, and 75,000 of them have been handed out in Arkansas. Hill asked the AG what to do about a letter received by the Des Arc School District from an atheist group challenging the placement of America’s motto “In God We Trust” in every classroom in the school if the signs are purchased by an outside group. The Arkansas legislature recently passed a bill requiring that the motto be posted in Arkansas schools, but not purchased by the schools. Rutledge said that her office has constitutional lawyers working on the problem. VanHouten said that his church was willing to buy the signs, but that he needed to know where to go to find out what the law says and what the church can and can’t do. Hill remarked that there is fine line

between teaching values and teaching religion. Sanner reminded the group that there is and should be a separation between church and state. Hill said that he just needed the state to give some guidance in the matter. Rutledge told the group about one of her office’s other programs called “Prescription for Life.” She said that Arkansas is ranked first in the nation in the misuse of prescription drugs among youth aged 12 - 17. Her office plans to train trainers on a new digital learning platform that will inform high school students about the misuse of prescription drugs. The program will not cost the schools or students anything. Prairie County Sheriff Rick Hickman asked Rutledge what she thought about the new medical marijuana law. “Marijuana is a gateway,” Rutledge said. “I was against its passage.” She also stated that prescription drugs are also a gateway with opioid users moving on to fentenol and heroin. Rutledge moved on to consumer scams that she said her office had been working to stop. She encouraged the group to sign up for the Do Not Call Registry. She said that her office has asked the Federal Communication Commission to give phone companies the permission to block nuisance calls. At the end of the meeting, Rutledge invited attendants to take some brochures and other materials that she had brought from the Attorney General’s office concerning some of the issues the group had discussed.

thing. We have lost our ability to have civil discourses on controversial topics. Maybe it's because 50% of people these days get their news from social media - you know, the same social media outlets that track where we go and what we read on the internet so that they can feed us more of the same. Maybe it's because we spend more time on our phones reading and commenting than with our families and colleagues in meaningful conversation. I remember going home after church every Sunday and discussing the preacher's sermon. Patti, Suzette, and I were quizzed on what was said and asked what we thought about it. Of course, we ate together at least one meal (usually at night) and discussed other things, too, like politics, TV shows, and what went on at school that day. I come from a newspaper family, so those are the things you talked about. I'm sure farm kids talked about farming and kids of business owners talked

about what went on in the store that day. Anyway, we talked, and that's the important point. Someone told me this week that someone he knew shut down their Facebook account because they were addicted to it. That took some strength. I don't get on Facebook often, but when I do, I get sucked in and find that an hour has passed before I know it. And people write the meanest, hateful, hurtful things on there. I guess they don't realize that employers now check out social media accounts before hiring people these days. They should remember that Twitter, Facebook, and other social media places are not anonymous. What you put online follows you. So, AG Rutledge, I agree with you. We need to have more conversations with each other, and those conversations should be in our adult voices. We should open our ears (of which we have two) and close our mouths (of which we have only one) and listen to those with

2017 DHS Angel Tree applications now available The Department of Human Services will be sponsoring the 2017 Angel Tree for Prairie County. Applications can be picked up at the Prairie County Department of Human Services. Applications will be accepted 10/01/17 – 10/31/17. Applications received after this date will not be accepted. Each family will be interviewed and determined to meet guidelines in order to be eligible for the Angel Tree.

We are also asking for your support by either adopting an angel or donating to the Angel Tree Project. The angels can be found on one of the Christmas trees located in our local banks at Hazen and Des Arc the Monday after Thanksgiving. We also need donations to assist in buying for angels that are not selected from the tree. If you would like to help with this project please contact Kelly Chapman

at 870-998-2581 ext 114. Donations can be made in the form of a check made payable to the DCO Community Cash Account, Department of Human Services. Thank you for supporting the Angel Tree Project and making Christmas merrier for the children in our county that are less fortunate. Without the help of persons like you, Christmas would be a sad time for some of the children in our county.

Delta Caucus approves nomination of Caldwell for Delta Regional Authority The Delta Caucus commends President Trump's nomination of Chris Caldwell, a long-time aide to US Sen. John Boozman (R-AR) as Federal CoChairman of the Delta Regional Authority. President Trump has now made two excellent choices for the two posts at the Delta Regional Authority in Chris Caldwell for Federal Co-Chairman and Peter Kinder of Missouri for Alternate Federal CoChairman. Caucus director Lee Powell said, “We congratulate Chris Caldwell on this nomination, we know he'll do a great job and we look forward to working with him." The Delta Caucus has disagreed with President Trump on other issues but we assess each issue on a case by case basis on the merits, and the nomination of Mr. Caldwell is a step forward for the region. Harvey Joe Sanner, Delta Caucus senior adviser of Des Arc, said "I have known Chris Caldwell for many years now, he is well-traveled in the Delta and is very much aware of our issues we deal with, and I look forward to working with him. Sen. Boozman has always been a great champion for the DRA and we are glad to see an Arkansan and long-time aide to the Senator ele-

vated to this post." Kevin Smith, Delta Caucus senior adviser from Helena-West Helena said, "It's great that a long-time aide to Sen. Boozman got the job because the Senator has always been a great champion for the DRA. We are also pleased to see that Trump filled the post relatively early in his administration, considering the huge number of posts he has to fill." Powell said "Mr. Caldwell has extensive experience in politics and public policy as a senior staffer to Sen. Boozman, and earlier worked for former Gov. Mike Huckabee and former Sen. Tim Hutchinson. We are confident the Senate will expeditiously confirm his nomination." Delta Caucus partners in other states have also had positive responses, based on the recommendations of our Arkansas colleagues who have worked with Mr. Caldwell and Sen. Boozman's strong reputation in the region. Mike Marshall, the former DRA Alternate Federal Co-Chairman from Sikeston, Missouri and now Director of the Sikeston Chamber of Commerce, said "I am glad to see a long-time staffer for Sen. Boozman in this post because I have long respected Sen.

Boozman's dedication to the entire region. My Delta colleagues in Arkansas have recommended him highly, and it's good that President Trump has filled this post." Millie Atkins, Co-Chair of the Economic Equality Caucus and Delta Caucus senior adviser from Monroe, Louisiana said "We the people of the Delta are glad to see the Trump administration filling this post, and we know Sen. Boozman has a strong reputation for leadership in the region, and our Arkansas colleagues who know Mr. Caldwell speak highly of him. So this is a strong step forward for the region." Registration is now open for the Oct. 19-20 Delta Caucus conference in Little Rock, Arkansas. Registration information is below in this email. Please send in registration fees in the amount of $125 either by check or by going to the website at mdgc.us and using the PayPal link to pay them. The PayPal process will make a record of your registration payment for our records. Or, if you wish to pay by check, please make out the check to "Delta Caucus" and mail to: Delta Caucus 5030 Purslane Place Waldorf, MD 20601

3A Barton Bears defeat Senior Hornets in hard-ffought game at Hornet Field

School board member Freddie Rogers joins his granddaughters for breakfast.

Hazen Elementary celebrates Grandparents’ Day

Hazen faced a very worthy adversary Friday as they played the Barton Bears for this year's first home game. Although fighting hard for four quarters, the Hornets could not manage a win against the 3A team. The final score was 24-40. The Hornets struggled at first to make their way down the field. After failing to score on the first drive, Hazen punted the ball the the Bears, who scored on their first drive. The conversion

was successful, and they were up 0-8. Barton's next drive was put to a stop by a fumble recovery by Jackson Shelman, and the Hornets finally began to slowly but surely move the ball. Their drive extended into the second quarter, but finally ended with a touchdown by Green and conversion by Weems to tie it up 8-8. The Bears got ball back and scored once again with a good conversion, and were up 816. Hazen answered with

another touchdown by Green, and after the conversion the score was set 16-16 until after the half. In the third quarter, Barton managed another quick touchdown and conversion, putting them up 16-24. Neither team could punch it in for the remainder of the quarter. Nine seconds into the fourth, the Bears scored their fourth touchdown and conversion, which set the score at 16-32. Green then scored his third and final touch-

down, and with another good conversion Barton was still up 24-32. The Hornets failed to find the end-zone after that, and allowed the Bears to score once more for a final score of 24-40. This loss sets the current season record at 1-2 for the Hornets. However, being a nonconference game, Hazen is still 1-0 in conference. They travel to McCrory this Friday to play the Jaguars at 7:00.

Junior Hornets lose 36-6 6 Thursday Calandra Caldwell and Samareah.

The Hazen Junior Hornets lost Thursday against the Lonoke Jackrabbits. This is their first loss since the 2014 season against the Augusta Red Devils, ending a 20-game winning streak. Thursday's loss came to a final score of 636. Things certainly did not go well for the Hornets last week. Throughout the night, Hazen's offense struggled to get yards against the Lonoke

defense. Their only score came late in the fourth quarter, and was not enough for a win. Defensively, the Hornets could not get a stop when needed against the Jackrabbits. Lonoke, meanwhile, had much success in getting to the end-zone. They were able to score a touchdown within minutes of kickoff, but the Hornets managed to prevent the conversion. On the Hornets' next drive, a Jackrabbit

scooped Hazen's ball and ran it back all the way. After another failed conversion, they were up 012. In the second quarter came Lonoke's third touchdown, this time with a good conversion for a 020 lead. Hazen successfully kept them from the end-zone for the rest of the half. In the third quarter the Jackrabbits scored twice, each with good 2-point conversions. In the fourth quarter, down 0-36, the Hornets

scored their only touchdown on a run by Eric Cohen. The conversion was no good, however, and the score stayed 6-36 for the rest of the night. Although things did not go well for Hazen, it will not make a difference in conference as Lonoke is 4A and non-conference. Therefore, in conference at least, the streak continues. They will try to keep it going against the McCrory Jaguars at home this Thursday at 7:00.
