HSD School Board approves the leasing of three new buses The Hazen School Board held their monthly meeting on Monday, August 29 at 6:00 p.m. in the high school library. School Board members present were President David Strohl, Richard Ingle, Freddie Rogers, David Williams, Sandra Penn, Vickie Skarda, and Superintendent Nanette Belford. Action Items The board approved Superintendent Nanette Belford’s request to lease three buses from American Bus Sales in a three year agreement. Belford budgeted $75,000 into the leasing of new buses for the school district. The three year contract with American Bus Sales will include five used buses; three, seventy-one passenger buses, one, seventy-eight person bus, and one forty-seven passenger. The lease will be under $70,000 and and if anything happens the company will fix the buses. The school buses belonging to the school will become spares.

Superintendent’s recommendation to accept the revised policy 7.10 Public Use of School Buildings was approved. The revised policy will allow the use of the old gym for the newly formed peewee basketball program. The program will be lead by Dr. Jeff Dulany. The organization has agreed to purchase a $1,000,000 liability insurance plan. Superintendent’s recommendation to change the high school hand book policy concerning the honors student was passed. The honor graduate students will now be able to opt out of Advanced Placement Calculus, and instead take an online concurrent credit college algebra class. Superintendent’s recommendation to enter a tuition agreement with The Sunshine School was approved. The agreement covers the tuition of two students for 2016-2017 years for $33,400. The A.C.A 6-24-101 resolutions for the dis-

trict to conduct business transactions with vendors in which school employees may be “directly interested” was approved. Other business included the superintendent’s recommendation to approve three students to work in the cafeteria part time for the 20162017 school year.

Obituaries Bill Denman Bill Denman, jeweler, pilot, golfer, father, friend and beloved family member, has been released from the bonds of life and took his last earthly flight on August 30, 2016. He was the owner of Bill's Custom Jewelry and the fourth generation of the Denman family whose skill and artistry created fine jewelry for customers across the state and region. His business was known for its honesty, integrity, and quality. Working with individual customers brought Bill a great deal of pleasure, and his talents in jewelry making and watchmaking leave a legacy in jewelry that many of his customers will cherish for generations. At the time of his passing, he had worked in the jewelry business 44 years, continuing the Denman tradition into its 124th year of service to the people of the Grand Prairie. Bill was born on January 7, 1950, the eldest son of optometrist Dr. Max and Eleanor Denman, who predeceased him. Left to honor his legacy are daughter,

Alexandria (Scott) Pickering and granddaughter, Taylor of Paris, Texas; son, William (Erin) Denman of North Little Rock; brothers, Max Denman Jr. of Atlanta, Mark (Diana) Denman of Nassau Bay, Texas, Jeff (Peggy) Denman of East End, and sister, Heidi (Gary) Hogan of North Little Rock, as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends around the state. One of Bill's earliest loves was flying, a hobby which he continued throughout his life. As a young boy, he went with his mother Eleanor to visit a friend at the J.O. Dockery airfield in Stuttgart, where he discovered discarded World War II training planes known as BT13's with big radial engines, which were being used as sources for spare airplane parts. He recalled climbing in, out, and over the planes, fascinated by the structures, pretending he could fly. Later, his mother said she worried about the wildlife lurking in the junked planes, but Bill said he was never afraid and never forgot. Later, when he was 15, he went to J.O. Dockery on his own and took his first flying lesson. After graduating from Stuttgart High School in 1968, his love of flying led him to the University of Mississippi, where he majored in Physics and hoped to pursue a degree in aviation and an eventual career as a Naval officer and pilot. He was admitted to Ole Miss on golf and music scholarships, skills he had honed while growing up in Stuttgart. He fondly remembered his time in the SHS Marching 100 band, where he played a Constellation Coronet and proudly recalled that his son William later played the same Constellation Coronet when in high school. The Ole Miss golfing scholarship skills began

when he began playing at 11 and his love of golf led to multiple local and state tournament awards and trophies. When asked about the trophies, he said he got rid of them long ago because there were too many to keep. He enjoyed playing golf with his father and many lifelong friends and golfed as long as his health permitted. Bill was enrolled at Ole Miss for two years, until the program was cancelled due to funding. Disappointed, he returned to Stuttgart for a short visit, and while there, his grandmother, Gene Bonner Denman, widow of Denman Jewellers owner Floyd A. Denman Sr., asked him if he would consider a future in the family business, since Bill's uncle, Al Denman, had also passed away. Bill agreed to join the family business, and he enrolled in Paris Junior College in Paris, Texas, where he graduated with a degree in jewelry manufacturing and watch repair in 1972. He married Nellie Plata, who returned with him to Stuttgart where Alex and William were born while Bill began his jewelry career in the family business. After returning to Stuttgart, he also continued his interest in flying, earning his pilot's license when he was 49. He was proud of the legacy begun by his great-grandfather M.F. (Moses Franklin) Denman, who was one of the early residents of Stuttgart, founder of the family jewelry business in 1892, and a founding member and elder in the First United Methodist Church, a legacy followed throughout four generations, where Bill was baptized and attended church. Bill also had a special friendship with his uncle Floyd A. "Al" Denman, Jr., who taught Bill to shoot and took him duck hunting, helping him develop a love of the

outdoors and wildlife that lasted the rest of Bill's life. Some of Bill's greatest moments of joy and peace were found with friends who shared his love of aviation and the freedom of the open sky. He was very proud of his father Max Denman, who at 19 flew Hellcats off the USS Suwannee, an escort carrier in the South Pacific and was a World War II POW. Bill fell in love with planes long before he knew his father had been a pilot and regretted never having a chance to take his father flying. Some of Bill's favorite flights took him to see his children in Texas when they were young, Oshkosh Air Festivals in Wisconsin with friends and his son William, and dinner flights with buddies Rolfe Bryant, Grayson Daniels, and Ross Wood to Gaston's White River Resort, as well as restaurants in Little Rock, Hot Springs, and Hammond, Louisiana. On a smaller scale, Bill filled his home and office with replicas and models of his favorite planes and found a great deal of pleasure in sharing the joy of remote control model plane flying with others. Until he left this life, Bill's flight bag and logbook remained at the jewelry store, just in case he had a chance to take to the skies one more time. Bill was active in the community and enjoyed working with friends and colleagues in the Stuttgart Rotary and Lion's clubs. He was also an active member and leader in the Arkansas State Jewelers Association and received the Arkansas State Jewelers Association Outstanding Member award. He was greatly loved and will be deeply missed by family, countless friends, and colleagues. He was a true, gracious Southern gentleman who understood the importance of loyal friendship, kindness, high standards, good business, and strong customer relations. The family thanks Dr. Brad Baltz, Dr. Noble B. Daniel, the caring staff at the Stuttgart Memorial Hospital and at CARTI in Stuttgart and Little Rock for their kindness and compassion, the wonderful patients he became friends with who shared CARTI experiences, the First United Methodist Church congregation and the United Methodist Men's group for their faithful support, and the members of the First Christian Church for their prayers. Special thanks go to

amazing friends with huge hearts who helped Bill in countless ways over the years: Tammy, a 20-year employee, and David Belcher; Dana, a 14-year employee, and Tony Bateman; and Susie Bonner, a 4-year employee, who did double duty cooking and driving Bill to appointments; flying buddy Rolfe Bryant for also driving Bill to appointments in Little Rock when needed; and Tom Thompson who worked alongside Bill for 25 years as a jeweler and learning the trade, helping Bill to continue serving customers even after he became ill. Bill had many other friends that he deeply appreciated and there is not room to name them all. In 2002, Bill started recording meaningful quotes in a small notebook he kept at his desk. One seems appropriate as a way to remember him. In March of 2005, he recorded wisdom from Leonardo de Vinci: "Once you have flown, you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, there you long to return." We believe that the end of his life has given Bill a new freedom, where he can soar to great heights in Heaven and be at peace. Bill requested a memorial celebration full of positive thoughts rather than a funeral. A Celebration of Life Service will be held for him at the Stuttgart First United Methodist Church this Friday, September 2, 2016. Visitation is at 1 p.m. and following the 2 p.m. service. He also requested no flowers and hoped those who wished to remember him in other ways would do so either donating to the CARTI Foundation, P.O. New Bethel News By Donna Kelly We had nice service’s at Church today, we had a nice crowd. We are getting along a little better. We went back to the Doctor. They said John’s eye was doing good and would just take time. We have another appointment on September 12. I am keeping up with drops twice a day. Charles Ingle came over Saturday, stayed a while with us and helped me out, as my air condition was out. He found problems and got it going pretty quick. He had not been feeling well since having some teeth pulled, this has hindered his breathing. He went to the Doctor in Little Rock but didn’t get any results. Kind of scary as it effects his eating and sleeping. We had several on our prayer list Sunday morning. It was good to have the Phillip Boothe family in church. Phillip and son Grant’s jobs take them out of town and they were back for services Sunday morning. All the young people are back in school. There are several away in college. We love to see them when they are

able to come. Johnny was driving the truck for Josh, his son in law today, Kim has babysit all her life, and she loves it. Cody and Mom clean houses for people. They have cut back since the kids are in school. Charles and Bruce came over yesterday. Charles has doctor’s appointments today in Little Rock. He has arthritis, has had teeth pulled and a problem with them. He went to sleep one night and Vicki shouldn't wake him up, he had to go to the hospital about 2 o’clock at night. They damaged something that affected his breathing when they pulled his teeth. It looks as if the weather stays as it is the farmers will get harvesting done. We have several new neighbors, they are repairing and re building every day. I haven’t met but a couple ladies and their children. Haven’t heard the news today but it is a beautiful day out now. Maybe it will be a great week for Harvest. Wishing everyone the best.

Mosaic Templars opens Creativity art collection Mosaic Templars Cultural Center (MTCC) will unveil the 2016 Creativity Arkansas collection at an opening reception and anniversary celebration at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 15. The Creativity Arkansas pieces will be part of MTCC’s fall exhibit, “Treasured Memories: My Life, My Story,” which comprises two parts: this year’s additions to the Creative Arkansas collection as well as other pieces recently acquired by the museum. This year’s Creativity Arkansas artists are Barbara Higgins Bond, Danny Campbell, Latoya Hobbs, Delita Martin, Aj Smith and Rex Deloney. MTCC opened its doors in September 2008, and the opening of the art exhibit is part of activities marking the museum’s 8th anniversary celebration. Free and open to the public, the reception will feature refreshments, interactive displays and live music by Kemistri featuring Nicky Parrish. “Treasured Memories: My Life, My Story” will be on display through the end of the year. The Creativity Arkansas collection began in 2008 and showcases artwork created by African American artists with a connection to

Arkansas. The collection celebrates the history of the state through vivid works in a variety of media. Consistent with the vision of MTCC, the collection preserves and documents Arkansas history through the visual arts. Artwork acquired for Creativity Arkansas is used for MTCC’s educational programming and periodically serves as inspiration for new public programs. The entire collection is funded through a grant from the Arkansas Natural and Cultural Resources Council. For more information, please visit mosaictemplarscenter.com or call (501) 683-3593. 1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, in keeping with the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus, 2 To Timothy, my dear son: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. Thanksgiving 3 I thank God, whom I serve, as my ancestors did, with a clear conscience, as night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers. 4 Recalling your tears, I long to see you, so that I may be filled with joy. 5 I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also. Appeal for Loyalty to Paul and the Gospel 6 For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. 7 For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and

self-discipline. 8 So do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner. Rather, join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God. 9 He has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time, 10 but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. 11 And of this gospel I was appointed a herald and an apostle and a teacher. 12 That is why I am suffering as I am. Yet this is no cause for shame, because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him until that day. 13 What you heard from me, keep as the pattern of sound teach-

ing, with faith and love in Christ Jesus. 14 Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you—guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us. Examples of Disloyalty and Loyalty 15 You know that everyone in the province of Asia has deserted me, including Phygelus and Hermogenes. 16 May the Lord show mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, because he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of my chains. 17 On the contrary, when he was in Rome, he searched hard for me until he found me. 18 May the Lord grant that he will find mercy from the Lord on that day! You know very well in how many ways he helped me in Ephesus. Chapter 2 1 My child, find your source of strength in the kindness of Christ Jesus. 2 You’ve heard my message, and it’s been confirmed by many witnesses. Entrust this message to faithful indi-

viduals who will be competent to teach others. 3 Join me in suffering like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. 4 Whoever serves in the military doesn’t get mixed up in non-military activities. This pleases his commanding officer. 5 Whoever enters an athletic competition wins the prize only when playing by the rules. 6 A hard-working farmer should have the first share of the crops. 7 Understand what I’m saying. The Lord will help you understand all these things. 8 Always think about Jesus Christ. He was brought back to life and is a descendant of David. This is the Good News that I tell others. 9 I’m suffering disgrace for spreading this Good News. I have even been put into prison like a criminal. However, God’s word is not imprisoned. 10 For that reason, I endure everything for the sake of those who have been chosen so that they, too, may receive salvation

from Christ Jesus with glory that lasts forever. 11 This is a statement that can be trusted: If we have died with him, we will live with him. 12 If we endure, we will rule with him. If we disown him, he will disown us. 13 If we are unfaithful, he remains faithful because he cannot be untrue to himself. 14 Remind believers about these things, and warn them in the sight of God not to quarrel over words. Quarreling doesn’t do any good but only destroys those who are listening. 15 Do your best to present yourself to God as a tried-and-true worker who isn’t ashamed to teach the word of truth correctly. 16 Avoid pointless discussions. People who pay attention to these pointless discussions will become more ungodly, 17 and what they say will spread like cancer. Hymenaeus and Philetus are like that.

Senior Hornets begin season with loss to Piggott Mohawks 6-6. A final Mohawk score ended the half at 6-12 for Piggott. The Hornets kicked the ball off to Piggott at the start of the third quarter, but the Mohawks quickly fumbled and gave the ball to the Hornets. Both teams fought for the ball for the remainder of the quarter, leaving the score at 6-12 Mohawks. In the fourth, Hazen only allowed one more touchdown and conversion, making the final score 6-20 for a Hornet loss. Several mistakes and penalties were the main reasons for the Hornets’ defeat. Otherwise, the Hornets performed rather well Friday

On Friday, the Hazen Hornets played the Piggott Mohawks in Hazen for the first game of the season. Although the game ended in defeat for the Hornets 620, they played hard and fought until the last seconds. Weeks of practice allowed Hazen to put up

a good fight against Piggott, a 3A school. This game will serve to help the Hornets improve several important parts of their offense and defense. Several good athletes prevented this larger school from blowing out the Hornets and kept Hazen in the game.

In the first quarter, multiple offensive mistakes and penalties resulted in an uncertain start for the Hornets. Piggott also made a number of mistakes as well, but a called-back Hornet touchdown and penalties from the Mohawks ended the quarter with no scores

from either team. Quickly in the second quarter, the Hornet defense failed to stop a touchdown run, and a failed extra point kick set the score at 0-6 Piggott. Hazen soon responded with a touchdown of its own, however, and a no-good conversion tied the game at

Junior Hornets rout P-W W 40-0 0

The Hazen Junior Hornets defeated the Pa l e s t i n e - W h e a t l e y Junior Patriots 40-0 Thursday night at Hornet Field. This game kicked off the football season for the Hornets, and a better win is hardly conceivable. After several weeks of practice, the Hornets were able to demonstrate in front of a home crowd their hard work to better themselves as a team. The team's success had much to do with its abundance of good athletes and players. Speed, size, and strength are just some qualities the Hornets have to offer. The Hornets kept the Patriots from scoring hardly any first downs,

much less a touchdown. Strong, fast linebackers and corner-backs behind the large defensive line held Palestine-Wheatley scoreless. Hazen scored four touchdowns in the first half, all with good conversions for a 32-0 going into the break. This momentum virtually removed the possibility of a Hornet defeat. In the third quarter, the Hornets scored a final touchdown and two-point conversion to extend the lead to 40-0. The Patriots continued to stay out of the end zone, allowing for Hazen to substitute many of the new seventh graders into the game. These young men held Palestine-Wheatley and finished the victory.

Due to a lack of linemen, the Junior Hornets largely run a Monster formation, meaning the offensive tackle positions are moved next to the receivers and played by athletes who normally would fill other positions. This can be a risky formation for any offense, but the Hornets executed it with great success as we saw Thursday. Much of this can be attributed to quarterback Blayne Toll and his receivers creating large yard gains on passing plays. The Hornets also ran the ball behind the Hornet linemen, center Brayden Vanhouten and guards Carter Mealler and Anthony Wilson for

against a big 3A team. Leaders in yardage include Michael Pargo, Lucas Walker, Quinton Bonds, and Trevor Duck. Quarterback Luke Vanhouten also made many good plays, including a pivotal firstdown pass to Cutler Taylor. Although the Hornet defeat has displeased many, the fact that it is non-conference dismisses much of the game's outcome later in the season. The Hornets will continue to practice hard, using this game as a learning experience. The Senior Hornets will play the Clarendon Lions in Hazen this Friday at 7 p.m. for the first conference game.

yardage. Among the teams top scorers were Terrell Penn, Ay'Jon Green, and Shykeem Harris. This win is the second consecutive Hazen shutout of the PalestineWheatley Junior Patriots, a team that was not even scored on two seasons ago. The Hornets' showed their determination and ability to win during this game. It will most certainly give the team momentum for their next game as they travel to Clarendon this Thursday to play the Lions.

HHS Senior Michael Pargo ran the ball down the field alongside teammate Kade Perry.
