Letter to the editor Gaylon Hale answers the charges lodged against her by Doyle Webb: On Wednesday, August 17th, 2016, Mr. Doyle Webb, Chairman of the Republican Party of Arkansas, announced from the steps of the Courthouse at Des Arc that I was not qualified to continue my campaign for Prairie County Circuit/County Clerk. Needless to say, I was shocked, upset and then angry. To see oneself being publically accused of wrongdoing is a very painful thing. I first thought of my family and friends and the shame of it, especially since I had carefully attended to the details necessary to file for the office. Mr. Webb's public letter to me offered an option; I can either end my campaign for Clerk or face legal action in the Circuit Court to force me off the ballot. I want to say to the voters of Prairie County that I will not end my campaign and if I must go to court to prove that I'm eligible to serve as your Clerk, so be it. Also, I would like the good people of Prairie County to know that I currently serve as Chief Deputy Clerk in the DeValls Bluff Courthouse and have worked there for sixteen years. Even though this is not of my doing, I'm sorry that you, the people of Prairie County, have been

Republican chair asks for Hale’s withdrawal from race State Republican Party Chairman Doyle Webb was in Des Arc on Tuesday, August 17, to announce his request that Gaylon Hale, candidate for the Prairie County Clerk’s office, withdraw her candidacy. He made the announcement from the steps of the county courthouse. A letter dated August 16, 2016, addressed to Gaylon L. Hale and signed by Chairman Webb, stated, “On November 2, 2015, you filed for the office of Prairie County Clerk. On that date, you executed under oath an Affidavit of Eligibility and related documents asserting you were a legally qualified candidate to seek the office. “However, on that date, you were not a registered voter of Prairie County, Arkansas and, in fact, you

were a registered voter in Lonoke County, Arkansas and not legally eligible to hold the office.” “Our investigation further reveals that you didn’t become a registered voter in Prairie County until November 13, 2015 some four days after the filing period or office had closed.” “As a result, you are not qualified to seek the office of Prairie County Clerk.” “It is my request that you immediately resign from the race for Prairie County Clerk within ten (10) days, or I will request our attorneys file litigation in circuit court to remove you as a candidate.” An Affadavit of Eligibility was filed on November 2, 2015 by Hale according to circuit clerk records. New Bethel News By Donna Kelly Sorry I missed the mail last week. The lady that works at the paper was ill over the weekend and help came in and got the paper out early. We have been very busy going to doctors and getting John through eye surgery. He had eye surgery last Wednesday. Doctor’s said it came out good, but doesn’t know how long it will take. We go back tomorrow for his check up. We had an appointment with the foot doctor on Thursday. We missed church on the 21st. I was just to busy putting drops in his eyes. We had a business meeting at church Saturday evening. Election of officers and teachers. Was so good to see Dale and Evelyn Greenwalt out Sunday morning. Tommy Martin is at home from the Nursing home, he is still weak, we are keeping him in

our prayers. I believe that most of the Summer Revival’s are over. We always enjoy that. Charles had a bad week. He had to go to the hospital in the middle of the night. He was feeling better on Saturday. He has an appointment with the doctor in Little Rock this week. Our grand children Cody and Kylee and Cooper came over for a while Saturday evening. We were glad to see them. It has been a busy time for them as school keeps them busy. Our thoughts and prayers go out to those who have lost loved ones. Bruce Ingle is doing very well. He calls me about twice a month. We have been tied down for the last year, and we don’t get to visit him, maybe soon. It is about time to go to the evening service at church, so hope everyone has a good week and people are feeling better.

Candidates Address PC Democratic Women The Prairie County Democratic Women’s Club met at Murry’s Restaurant on Thursday, August 24, 2016. The Club invited Democratic candidates Gaylon Hale, who is running for Prairie County Circuit/County Clerk; Tamara Forrester Dabney, who is running for Prairie County Treasurer; and Rick Hickman who is a candidate for Prairie County Sheriff. Both Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Dabney were in a t t e n d a n c e . Unfortunately, Mr. Hickman was out of state and could not join us. Harvey Joe Sanner was on hand to give a report and pass out material related to the effort being made by Doyle Webb, Chairman of the Arkansas Republican Party to have Gaylon Hale forced off the November 8th, 2016 General Election ballot. This action by the Republican Party of Arkansas has caused much confusion and personal pain for Gaylon Hale, her family, and friends. Mrs. Hale addressed the crowd and explained her discomfort by being investigated and made to feel like a criminal. According to Mr. Sanner, her campaign began on November 2th, 2015 when she filed for the office of Clerk as a Democratic candidate. No one challenged her eligibility at that time, and her name was placed on the March 1st , 2016 Preferential Primary Election ballot as an opposed candidate.

He says that no Democratic Party official or Mrs. Hale were contacted by the Republican Party and informed that there was any problem with her eligibility. Mr. Webb’s letter to the press of August 16th, 2016 requested that Mrs. Hale resign from the race within ten (10) days or he would file litigation in circuit court to remove her as a candidate. Mrs. Hale does not intend to end her campaign. Both Mrs. Hale and Mr. Sanner expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support they have seen for her candidacy. We’ll be anxious to see how the circuit court judge rules on this matter. Tamara Forrester Dabney addressed the ladies and explained her credentials that surely qualify her for the job of Prairie County Treasurer. She asked for their help in her campaign and announced that she will have a booth at the Rice Festival in Hazen on October 29th to meet and greet voters. The Des Arc Chamber of Commerce is holding its Fall Festival on that same date, but luckily their activities, directed to our youthful citizens, begins at 4:00 PM. The Chamber has extended an invitation to all candidates to address those attending the Festival. Mrs. Dabney and Mrs. Hale hope to attend both functions. The Club will once again assist the Prairie County Democratic Committee with their election-year rally. The

date is set for Tuesday, October 11. The Committee will change pace somewhat this year with the event being in the park at Hazen, (good weather permitting). The plan is to offer hot dogs and other treats. The Rally is open to all, and everyone is welcome and urged to attend because the Democratic Candidates and/or surrogates for county, federal and national office will be on hand. Mr. Sanner gave a brief report on the Hillary Clinton for President Campaign. We are all excited about the possibility of seeing a former Arkansan and the first female presidential candidate run for office, and we think she would make an excellent president. The group enjoyed some always-delicious food from Stan and Becky’s kitchen that went really well with our great fellowship. We are very appreciative of Gaylon, Tamara and Rick for putting their name on the line to run for office. We understand that it can be costly, time consuming and we are grateful that they chose to run as Democrats, but more importantly, we believe each one to be very qualified and certainly capable to serve in these three very important positions. Qualifications, experience and honesty should always come before party labels, and we are convinced that these candidates do just that. Summitted by President Chris Weems.

Grasshoppers has 100 years’ celebration The “Grasshopper’s” Bar in DeValls Bluff, Arkansas, formerly “D’s” has quite a history. In 1910 and again in early 1915 fire destroyed three buildings. My grandfather, E.I. Murphy was living in Hazen, Arkansas at the time some 8 miles away. He was approached by some members of the town of DeValls Bluff, to come and install the generator for town electricity they had acquired. My grandfather had great ability and “know how” so he moved to DeValls Bluff mid 1915. And, with electricity came the three new stores that was built back in 1916; a grocery store, Hipolite Drug Store, and the “Murphy Tavern”. E. I. Murphy had the name Murphy 1916 etched into the front top of the building and it’s still visible today. My grandfather set-up the water works as crews modernized the town. He actually ran DeValls Bluff Water Works and the City Hall for 55 years. He also kept his bar running until 1929 when the business was sold to Mr. Doc Minton who coined the

name “Pool Hall”. Mr. Minton ran his Pool Hall well up into the late 1960’s early 1970’s. My best friend in high school, Danny Harden, acquired the business and kept it as the Pool Hall for years. When I came home after the military I would stop by and have a “cold one” and he would tell me about the strange things going on in the Pool Hall; such as the juke box playing when it wants to or seeing a ghostly apparition mist upon locking up one night. According to Steve and Shannon the ghostly juke box is still at it. At one time the doors never stayed shut and things would be out of place, as Danny Harden would tell me. Now that I’ve told a little bit of history about the place, I also want to tell you that there was a brick building directly out the backdoor of the Pool Hall that served as DeValls Bluff City Morgue. Steve and Shannon became very interested in that! My Uncle Horace Savage assisted the mortician there for many years. Yes

folks! A bar up front and a City Morgue in the back! As a kid I use to hear my Uncle tell stores of the job he had to do and the goings on in the bar up front; the brawls and the sudden deaths the building seen. Eventually the building was torn down and Steve and Shannon used the old brick to build a fabulous beer garden. Is there a ghostly connection here? Today it is renamed “Grasshopper’s” as Steve Martin and Shannon Moore carry on the tradition. They have quite a business going with live music and the coldest beer in the county. Oh, and plenty of stories to tell to those who “belly up” to the bar! Grasshopper’s is a great place to get an old time feeling and is a great attraction to this old river town. So check in to the oldest bar in Prairie County and see for yourself. You just might experience a few ghost from the past yourself. Ken Murphy August 2016

Kathie Ewing, left, outgoing president installed the officers of Prairie County Retired Teachers Unit at the regular meeting Tuesday, August 15, at DeValls Bluff Methodist Church Fellowship Hall. The Officers are Thelma Gray, president, Carolyn Brakensiek, vice-president, June Whiteside, secretary, and Vivan Novak, treasurer.

By Chris Weems Kathie used a jigsaw puzzle as the theme for the ceremony. She said, “Each piece has a place and must be in the correct place for the puzzle to fit and that the officers have certain jobs to fulfill for the organization to work well.” She turned the meeting over to the new officers. Jennifer Kelly, a local pharmacist, spoke to the PCRTA group at the beginning of the meeting about taking prescription medicines. She said it is important that each physician a person goes to know the medications he or she has been given by another Dr. She said that sometimes a person who goes to more than one Dr. have two medications for high cholesterol or even have heart medications that will cause real problems if it is not

caught in a short time. Jennifer said that the pharmacist, is the one who notices that person has two prescriptions that are alike with a different name. She said that in most cases the patient can save money by using the generic brand. Ask your Dr. and pharmacist about it. She also warned about discussing that you are taking one of the newer more expensive pain killers because you could be burglarized. And of course she said “be sure to take the medicine as directed.” Medicines are too expensive not to use them, she said. Thelma Gray presided for the meeting. Bill Arnold gave the blessing for the meal that was provided by the members from DeValls Bluff. Debbye Harrison, devotional leader gave the devo-

tional, entitled, “Are you a Thump or a Thud?” It was based on the technology of thumping a watermelon” to determine it it’s ripe.
