The Hazen HIPPY [Home instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters] had their December Group Meeting at the Hazen Community Center on Monday December 12, 2016, at 5:00 in the evening. Katelynn Carrell and Linda Strohl welcomed the families to the group meeting as they came in. Each child received a gingerbread sticker page and a blank letter page so that they could write a letter to Santa when they arrived. After signing in Home Based Educator Katelynn Carrell welcomed the families and went over the agenda for the night’s events. First all the children were gathered together for story time with Home Based Educator Linda Strohl. The story of the night was “The Gingerbread Family” by Grace Maccarone. This book was an extra special book because each page had a scratch and sniff part. After story time and group picture a special visitor from the North Pole arrived, Yes, it was Santa Clause!!!! All the children were so happy to see Santa that they all scattered and ran to him. Santa Clause set on a bench with candy canes. Each child one by one came and set on Santa Clause lap and told him what they wanted for
Christmas and Santa gave each child a candy cane. After Santa had finished talking with all the children Santa went on his way back to the North Pole to get ready for Christmas and the children went on to the cookie decorating craft. The children got to pick what kind of cookie they wanted and then pick out decorations from a table full of candies and icing and then go back to their seat and make any kind of cookie they wanted. We even had some parents decorating cookies. We also had snacks and drinks, which was a Christmas tree cake and juice or water. We also had a gingerbread poster shape game. Each poster had a gingerbread man and geomatics shape on it. The child could tell their parents what shape and color the gingerbread man was holding. When everyone was finished with the centers we then drew for door prizes. In Mrs. Katelynn’s class Jacob Swink won and in Mrs. Linda’s class Brynden Hicks won. They each won a Candy Land game. Upon leaving all the Hippy children received a goody bag that consisted of a gingerbread man Christmas tree ornament they could make and the recipe to make homemade gingerbread men, pencils
with gingerbread men on them, the book “The Gingerbread Family”, by Grace Maccarone and some Christmas snacks. The children who attended the group meeting were: James Baxter, Hayden Carrell, Brinlynn Craig, Christina Duncan, William Hickman, Joshua Hubbard, Brynden Hicks, Vicnce King, Kyler Ladner, Selah Lee, Cam Seely, Jacob Swink, Cathryn Thomas, and Zander West. The next HIPPy Group Meeting will be February 13, 2017 at 3:30 p.m. The HIPPY staff would like to Wish Everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. HIPPY also would like to Thank the City of Hazen for letting us use the Hazen Community Center, to Santa Clause for taking time out of his busy time of the year to talk to the children. HIPPY would like to extend a special thank you to all the parents and children in the HIPPY Program. HIPPY is still enrolling for the 2016 – 2017 school year. quilt she made for her Aunt Mabel's reunion. Glenda made a blanket for her grand-dog, Beegee. Also, she showed all of her "house" blocks she is working on. She asked for advice on her "wash house" block. We all liked the block utilizing the "clothesline" motif. Additionally, she showed her finished Xmas quilt with the paper doll pattern with the detachable doll clothes. The meeting was adjourned with the blessing of the meal. Everyone was delighted to partake of all the Xmas goodies. Many recipes were exchanged and hints given for the perfect roasted pecans. Everyone was glad to have Cindy and Michele join the group for lunch. When we couldn't eat another bite, it was time for the Round Robin game. Everyone gathered their 5 small things and divided into two sets. Much hilarity ensued as whoops and giggles could be heard coming from both sides of the room as members tried to remember their left from their right. Lou Anna and Betty won their respective games while giving most of their "loot" away to the rest of the players. Plans were made for the January Sit n' Sew as members gathered up their dishes, folded tablecloths and put the room to rights. See you on January 11th with your Valentine fabric.

Prairie County Master Gardeners Visit The Empress for Outing
Back Row: (L to R) Keith Robinson, Janet Turnage, Lonna Rhodes, Linda Price, Janice Sample, and Dee Black. Front Row: Lorenda Dunlap, Debora Caroenter, Lyda Andrews, Patsy McMullen, Sherry Bullock, Chris Weems, and Charles Oldham. Carolyn Marek was the photographer. PCMaster Gardeners got a picture of the Mansion they had toured on their Christmas Outing.
By Chris Weems Fifteen members of Prairie County Master Gardeners visited The Empress of Little Rock Tuesday for their Christmas Outing. They were served a “Grand High Tea” and toured the mansion. The Mansion, was completed and occupied in 1888 by the original owner, a “Mr. Hornibrook”. Building the Mansion on South Louisiana took four years and cost $20,000. The trees used for the lumber in the house were cut in Arkansas, sent to a mill in St. Louis and returned to Little Rock as the lumber they wanted. After Mr. Hornibrook’s death, the mansion has had several owners who were not related to him. It has other businesses in
it. Sharon and Bob WelchBlair bought the Mansion 23 years ago and restored it. The mansion is available for weddings and honeymoons regularly. It is advertised as “BodySpa Suites”, Lonna Rhodes said. The Mansion is now an “award winning Bed and Breakfast” as stated in the flyer. Each bedroom has a parlor. There is only one closet in the house. It was added in a renovation in a second floor bedroom. All other storage is in pieces of furniture. The ceilings are 14 feet tall and some of the draperies go to the ceiling. The front door, is a double door and is curved to match the round entrance to the house. The glass in the doors and the frames are curved.
The group toured the two floors of the house that are fully furnished and occupied most of the time by persons traveling in Arkansas. The third floor is the “attic” and as the guide said, is like anyone’s attic, with extra pieces of furniture and household items stored, and dusty. The attic is the passageway to the secret gambling room where Mr. Hornibrook entertained his friends. Several members remarked at the “beauty of the building and the apparent condition of the house. The group was told that very little of the building itself has been replaced or repaired. The next meeting of the Club will be Tuesday, January 17, 2017, at BancorpSouth, at 6:00 p.m.
