Heavy rains, winds bring flooding to Prairie and surrounding counties Saturday night The state of Arkansas was hit with torrential rains, heavy winds, and tornados last Saturday night, claiming the life of one person in Arkansas County. Extreme flooding was reported around the state along with flooded homes, electrical outages and downed trees. On Saturday night, the Hazen Police set off the tornado warning after they were notified of a tornado touchdown around Humnoke that was headed toward Hazen. The mayor’s office also sent out a phone call to residents. According to Chief Bradley Taylor, the tornado siren is activated as soon as notification of a tornado headed toward
Hazen is received, giving residents a 15-20 minute window to seek shelter. According to the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management (AEDM), in North Little Rock, the State Emergency Operations Center (SEOC) was activated in response to the severe weather this past weekend. Damage reports to the AEDM showed that several counties were damaged from the severe weather. The following has been reported by the local coordinators in Prairie its surrounding counties: Arkansas: One fatality after a tree fell on a mobile home.
Lonoke: Power is out in Furlow and England. Two house fires were reported on Bearskin Lake Road in Scott, AR. Countywide flooding. Monroe: Trees down and power outages in Brinkley. Hazen City Council votes to sell property south of I-4 40 The sale of property near I-40 and the clearing of trees and underbrush at the I-40 interchange were the main discussions held at the April Hazen City Council meeting held on Thursday, April 20. Mayor David Duch, Recorder David Hardke, and Council Members Steve Chlapecka, Tim Juola, Clevella Mosby, Rick Wiggins, and Barbara Rogers were present at the meeting. Paul and Courtney Adams, owners of “The Bottoms” outdoor sporting goods store in DeValls Bluff explained to the council that they have been looking to move their business to a location near the interstateat Hazen. They approached the coundil to purchase the three acres south of the Super * motel, which the city owns. Adams offered the city $8,000 for the site, but asked if the city would consider financing the purchase. Mayor Duch said the council could consider the offer, but he did not believe that the city could finance the sale. Discussion of the sale included when the building would be completed and the business begin operation. The council was not interested in selling the land only to have the site purchased but held and possibly resold. The council members
agreed that the city should retain the “right of first refusal” to buy back the land at the same price if no improvements were made within a specified timeframe or if the Adams decided to not build a business there. The council agreed to reimburse the Adams if improvements were made to the property and if they could provide provide documentation for the cost of those improvements. After the discussion was completed, the council voted to accept the offer for the site subject to terms and conditions to be decided and agreed upon with the aid of legal counsel. Mayor Duch reported that the 2017 budget has $15,000 allotted for the clearing trees under ten inches in diameter, dead trees, and underbrush along the 1-40 interchange. Duch said that two bids had been received - one from West Tree Service for $7,700 plus $1550 each for four dead trees for a total of $13,900 and the second from Steve Miller for $17,775. He noted that both parties have guaranteed that the cleared area will be mowable. Foot noted that the utilit department is trying to keep the ramps mowed but litter of all types is causing damage to mow-
ers. On a related subject, Foot also asked for help from Police Chief Taylor in preventing trucks from parking on the interstate ramps. In other business, Utility Department Supervisor Phillip Foot reported that erosion is endangering West Front Street between Little Hurrican Creek and Highway 249. To fix the problem, the Utilities Department is laying galvanized corrugated pipe in the ditch south of the street. The pipe will be covered and the ditch filled in. Foot also reported that his department will begin patching street potholes again, and additional SB2 gravel and sewer pipe will be purchased with bond funds for future sewer repairs and improvements. Mayor Duch reported that construction of the splash pad is scheduled to begin the first week of May. He also introduced an ordinance required by Arkansas code ANN. 1442-107 permitting David Campbell and Greenway Equipment, Inc. to conduct business with the City of Hazen. The requirement to read the ordinance in full 3 times on three different days was waived by the council (continued page 6)
receiving all of the requests from the counties and are responding on order of the Governor. “Our prayers go out to the families who lost loved ones in the heavy rain and storms last night. I also thank our first responders who have worked tirelessly to provide assistance," Governor Hutchinson said. “This afternoon I declared a State of Emergency for Arkansas
to ensure that we have in place available resources to assist counties affected by last night’s storms. ADEM continues to coordinate with counties on damage assessments.” As of Monday, May 1, AEDM reported five confirmed fatalities due to severe weather Saturday night, one each in Arkansas County, Carroll County, and Cleburne County, and two in Washington County.
Cow vaccine day for local farmers The County Brucellosis (Bangs) vaccination program will be held Wednesday, May 10, 2017 or Thursday May 11, 2017. Arkansas law requires that all heifer calves between 4 and 12 months of age be vaccinated against Brucellosis. Representatives from the Livestock and Poultry Commission and the Prairie County Cooperative Extension Service will offer an onfarm vaccination program at no cost to all Prairie County beef and dairy producers. If you are interested, please contact the Prairie County Extension De Valls Bluff at 870-998-2614 by May
5th . A schedule will be put together and producers will be notified when we will be at their farm. The Livestock and Poultry Commission has stated that each farm where cattle are to be vaccinated must have a chute or squeeze chute with a head gate where cattle can be subdued. Even with good facilities, the chances of someone getting hurt are possible. If the proper facilities are not available or safe, the vaccinator has the right to refuse to vaccinate your calves. Calves will not be vaccinated unless the owner or someone representing him is present.

Michael Grady Michael Edward “Mike” Grady, 78, died peacefully on April 17, 2017 in New Orleans, Louisiana. M i k e was born at home in Prairie County, Arkansas in 1938 to Lela Mae a n d Socrates “Crate” Grady. He was the eldest of three children, brother to beloved siblings Marilyn Sims and Larry Grady of Hazen, and brother-in-law to Buddy Sims and Sue Grady of Hazen. Mike was married to Darlene Davidson Grady of Malvern for 22 years and was the treasured father of Greg Grady of Hazen and Mischelle Grady Thiels of New Orleans, and adored father-in-law to Paul Thiels of New Orleans and Diana Futhey-Smith of Fayetteville. Mike was a devoted grandfather to his grandchildren Mychal and Nathan Grady and John Grady, Lillian and Beatrice Thiels. He loved nothing more than spending time with them in the woods or on the water, showing them all he had learned about hunting and fishing. After divorcing in the 1980’s, Mike met his longtime companion and friend, Peggy Smith of Conway. He found more family in Peggy and her children, Mike and Steve Smith and Kelly Smith Bing and their children, Dylan, Meagan, Grace, Carter and Cassle. After his father’s death, and the brief interim service of his mother as Sheriff, Mike was elected Sheriff in 1973. This led him, along with other fellow sheriffs, to appeal to the Arkansas Sheriffs’ Association to start the Arkansas Sheriffs’ Boys’ Ranch in 1976. Mike was passionate about the nownamed Arkansas Sheriffs’ Youth Ranch until he died. He was honored by the organization in November of 2013 for a lifetime of service. In 1987 Mike was appointed Criminal Detention Facilities Coordinator by then governor Bill Clinton. In 1988 he coauthored the jail standards for the state of Arkansas that are still in effect today. Eventually Mike’s gregarious personality and deep connections in the state led him to a sales position with City TeleCoin, selling phone and commissary systems to jails. He held this position for twelve years, finally retiring at age 75. Mike was a man’s man, an avid sportsman and loved hunting, fishing, horse racing, baseball, dancing, spending time with his children and grandchildren and sitting around a fire. He will be remembered for his generous nature, his fish frys, his devotion to his family, his love of the outdoors, and his wealth of jokes and stories. He was always ready to have a good time, loved to laugh and was still cracking jokes until the very end. A memorial service will be held on Saturday May 6 at the Hazen First United Methodist Church, 211 N. Hazen Avenue, Hazen, Arkansas. Visitation begins at 10 am. Service at 11. Book title: My Sister the Vampire Author: Sienna Mercer By: Kaycie Lynn Seely
Book Title: The Heroes of Olympus Author: Rick Riordan By: Aydin Self
Summary: Ivy and her sister go to a different country but they do not know if the prince has a crush on Ivy's sister or not. They think that he likes her because he asked her to the ball. And they think that she likes him. Reviewer Critique: Ivys sister is Sophia. I like it when Sophia's boyfriend sends her flowers and sends her a dress in the mail. I also like it when Ivy's boyfriend sends her a video about them, and it is so sweet. I like it when Sophia's boyfriend surprises her and comes to the royal ball. Dislikes: I do not like it when Sophia's boyfriend gets mad because she is talking to the prince. Then sophia gets mad because her boyfriend is mad then they get mad at each other then make it up later. Then the prince takes someone else to the ball. Rating I give this book 5 stars!!!!!!!!!!
Summary: The 7 heroes, must save the world. “To Storm or Fire the World will Fall.” That Is what the prophecy said, at least part of it, who will make the world fall, or what. They must stop the most Ancient, most Evil force of all…. The world, Gaea- the Ancient Greek term for Mother Earth, will it fall? Will the heroes succeed? Read the book to find out. Reviewer Critique: Personally I like this book, It’s adventure packed, action packed, fun story! It’s also great in the way that you can relate to some of the characters, and they have personality. They are all under stress in this book, and you know because of how the characters act and talk, and everything! It's just a great book. Dislikes: I actually can’t say I disliked anything about it. Rating: 5 stars
Book Title: Book: The Chronicles of Narnia; The Horse and His Boy By: Austyn L. Booth Summary: A young boy runs away from home in search of a new land called Narnia, where hopefully he won’t be a slave for his “father”. Along the way, he and his talking horse Bree encounter another rider and her horse, Hwin (who also talks). They become friends and, as it turns out, they are all seeking Narnia, and in order to get there, they must face many obstacles. Reviewer Critique: The book is very well put together and things that occurred in the beginning of the book seemed like just a sentence but actually played a huge part in the story, making this book intriguing and fun to read. It is also very humorous and entertaining. Dislikes: NONE! This book was awesome! Rating Out of five stars, I would give this book a: Definitely a 5/5 !!!
Book Title: The Son of Neptune Author: Rick Riordan By: Brandon Addison Summary: The Son of Neptune is about when another great prophecy comes up and Hera forced a “Trade Program” to get the Greek and Roman demigods together. Unfortunately, the famous Percy Jackson has been forced into it. He doesn’t know where he is, and all he remembers from his past is a name, “Annabeth.” Now, it’s up to Percy and two friends to save the world from the past. Reviewer Critique: I like how Rick Riordan made what happens in the book matched up with a character’s background. I like the action that makes it real. I mean, well, the action makes it feel like this actually happened. Which, we don’t know! Dislikes: The only bad thing about this book was the fact that Rick left a cliffhanger just waiting to happen. If you don’t have The Mark of Athena, you go mad. Simple as that. Rating: This is definitely a 5 star book. It’s too good not to be.
Book Title: The Shadow Children Series: Among the Free Author: Margaret Haddix By: Faith Johnson Summary: In the book “Among the Free” Luke Garner (a third child pretending to be Lee Grant) is working for the population police and he gets recruited into a group with a selfish boy. The boy takes Luke’s snack after the driver offered to give them something to eat. Later on, Officer Hauk (their commander for the mission) orders them to go to each and every house and tell the people of that home they need to be in town to receive their new identification cards. Luke goes to an elderly lady’s home and she refuses to comply with the orders of Officer Hauk. Luke carries the woman to the village to be shot be he can’t do it so he drops the gun and runs away. Luke finds a cave and sleeps there. The next day he goes to another village and watches the news on a television screen at someone’s home. He realizes that Oscar, Lee’s brother Smits’ old bodyguard, is in control of the United States. -The thing is… Oscar wasn’t always trustworthy. He was more suspicious.Luke spent the next several days just eating, sleeping, and playing with his old horse Jenny in the stables. Luke wanted to find the secret room he stayed in when he lived in the Grant’s house. -The Grant’s house was turned into the population police’s headquartersWill Luke be free in the end? Likes: I like that Luke didn’t shoot the elderly woman and ran away. Dislike- I dislike that he didn’t go find a place to sleep maybe at someone’s abandon home. I like that he finally went to someone’s house and watched what was going on at the headquarters. DislikeI dislike that Luke stayed in the horse stall most of his time at the new headquarters. RatingI think this book is a 4 1/2 out of 5!!!

1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. 2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: 3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world. 4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. 5 They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them. 6 We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error. 7 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. 8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God
is love. 9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. 10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another. 12 No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us. 13 Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit. 14 And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world. 15 Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God. 16 And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him. 17 Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world. 18 There is no fear in
love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love. 19 We love him, because he first loved us. 20 If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? 21 And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.1 Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him. 2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous. 4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. 5 Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God? 6 This is he that came
by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth. 7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one. 8 And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one. 9 If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son. 10 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. 11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. 13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the
Son of God. 14 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: 15 And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him. 16 If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it. 17 All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death. 18 We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not. 19 And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness. 20 And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life. 21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.

Lady Hornets win tenth in a row, claim conference tournament crown on April 28th in McCrory Hazen won their final regular season game 8-1 against Jacksonville Lighthouse before claiming their third straight conference tournament crown. Going into the regional tournament in Palestine-Wheatley, the Lady Hornets have a 208 overall record and have won 16 of their last 18 games. On Monday, Hazen started slowly managing only a single baserunner, a second-inning, one-out walk by Faith Young through two innings. Meanwhile, Allie Burroughs worked a perfect first inning and then worked out of a jam in the second to keep the game scoreless. In the top of the third, Christin Young reached base on an error and went to second on a single by Brayden Williams. A walk by Elizabeth Foot loaded the bases with nobody out. Both Abby Rounsavall and Morgan Stock singled to score runs making the score 2-0 with the bases still loaded. Two outs later, Payton Fought reached on an error to force in a run and end the scoring. Jacksonville Lighthouse got a leadoff single in the third but Burroughs set the next three batters down to end the third with Hazen leading 3-0. The fourth and fifth innings were quiet with Hazen batters reaching base in each inning on errors and JL getting base runners with a hit batsman and a single. Fought singled to lead off the sixth, Christin Young singled one out later and Williams reached on a force out at third to put runners on first and second with two out. Foot’s triple scored both runners and she scored moments later on a single by Rounsavall. The next two Hornet batters reached on
JL fielding errors that resulted in another Hazen run and Faith Young’s single to center drove in the fifth run of the inning, leaving the score at 8-0. JL got on the scoreboard when the first three batters reached base in the bottom of the sixth with a Hornet error, a hit batsman and an RBI single. Burroughs allowed another runner on a walk but left the bases loaded when she struck out the side. Williams singled in the seventh and scored the final Hornet run when JL committed two more errors. Hazen worked around two more Hornet errors and another hit batter with a double play and a strike out to finish the game 9-1. Williams and Rounsavall led the way with two hits each and both Rounsavall and Foot had two RBI’s. Burroughs allowed four hits, hit three batters and struck out a dozen while walking only one. In the first round of conference tournament play at McCrory on Tuesday, Hazen made short work of a Brinkley Tiger team that had not won a game all year, winning 15-0. Allie Burroughs and Christin Young combined on a no-hitter that included eight strike outs and only 32 total pitches in the three inning game. Meanwhile, Hazen scored seven runs in both the first and second innings converting eleven hits, four walks, three Lion errors and two hit batsmen into fourteen runs. Third baseman Brayden Williams led the attack with three hits, including a pair of doubles and drove in a game high four runs. Abby Rounsavall, Morgan Stock, Payton Fought and Chase Wiggins each had a pair of hits and every Hornet batter scored at least one
City Council meeting continued___________ (continued from page 1) and they voted unanimously to pass the ordinance. The emergency clause was put into effect, and on a motion by Councilman Chlapecka, the ordinance was put into immediate operation by a unanimous vote. Police Chief Bradley Taylor reported that his department has decided to keep one of the police cars rather than trading
it in on the new pickup and that $2,769.46 is needed to purchase a new digital radio for the new pickup truck. A radio will need to remain in the car. Because the expense of another radio had not been budgeted the council voted to purchase the new digital radio. The next Hazen City Council will be held on Thursday, May 18th at 6:00 p.m. in City Hall.

run in the game. On Thursday, the Hornets faced off against rival Carlisle in a semifinal game and they jumped on the Bison early with three runs in the first inning. Burroughs set the Bison down in order in the top of the inning and then drove in two runs with a single in the bottom of the frame. Elizabeth Foot reached on an error and went to third when Morgan Stock reached on another Bison miscue. Burroughs’ hit plated both runners and pinch runner Morgan Tosh scored moments later on Faith Young’s single. Burroughs struck out all three batters she faced in the second and Hazen continued to pour it on their half of the inning. Williams continued her hot hitting with a solo home run followed by singles from Foot and Rounsavall. Both runners moved up a base without a throw from the catcher and both scored moments later on a wild pitch and another Carlisle error. The Bison got their first hit in the third with two
outs but the inning ended with the runner being thrown out trying to steal. Hazen went down 1-2-3 in the third as did Carlisle in the fourth leaving the score 6-0 heading to the bottom of the fourth. Foot singled with two outs, stole second and third, then scored on the fourth Carlisle error of the game. The Bison finally got on the scoreboard in the fifth with a leadoff walk, a wild pitch and their last hit of the game to trail 7-1. Hazen scored the final run in the bottom of the sixth when Williams walked with two outs, stole second and scored on a single by Foot. Burroughs worked around a one-out walk to seal the victory and send the Hornets to the conference championship game on Friday. She allowed only one run on two hits, walking only one and fanning fourteen batters. Foot led all hitters with three hits. For the third year in a row, the Hornets faced the McCrory Jaguars in the championship game
and, also for the third consecutive time, they took the game and the tournament crown, with a 3-1 win. It was only McCrory’s third loss of the season, including a 10 loss to Hazen earlier this year. The Hornets got all their runs in the top of the first inning when they parlayed five singles by Foot, Rounsavall, Burroughs, Fought and Chase Wiggins into three runs. McCrory got a leadoff single in the bottom of the inning but stranded the runner at second. Both pitchers settled into a groove with neither team able to get a runner to third base until bottom of the fourth. The Jaguars got two singles to lead off the inning and one run scored on a ground out to cut the lead to 3-1. Burroughs struck out the next two batters to end the threat. Both sides went three up, three down in their next at-bats before Hazen mounted a two-out threat in the top of the sixth. The Hornets loaded the bases with singles by Wiggins and Christin Young and a
fielding error by the McCrory first baseman. But the next batter flied out to right to end the inning. The Hornets took advantage of a base running blunder to turn a double play and erase a leadoff walk in the bottom of the sixth. Hazen loaded the bases with two outs again in the top of the seventh on a single, a walk and another McCrory error but couldn’t score. Burroughs worked around a leadoff single in the bottom of the inning and sealed the win by retiring the next three Jaguar batters. The win sends Hazen to the Region 2A North Regional playoffs as the #1 seed from the 2A-3 conference again and they will face the #4 seed from the 2A-2 conference at 3pm on Thursday at Palestine-Wheatley. Led by their four seniors and with the grueling nonconference schedule they played, the Hornets are primed for another strong run at the state championship this year. Go Hornets!
