Autograph quilts or signature quilts are usually constructed using one simple block containing a name on each block. During the first half of the 1800’s it was popular for quilt makers to ink their names often accompanied by a short sentiment, such as “Remember Me”. Not surprisingly this practice coincided with the popularity of autograph books. These quilts reached their peak of popularity in the mid 1840’s with Westward Expansion. Autographs during that time were usually written in pencil and then embroidered, and the
tence today in quilt museums and private collections.
Throughout the years, autograph quilts have been created for many reasons. One of the most common reasons is simply – to remind the recipient of friendships and family members. Many autograph quilts were made to honor individuals - especially teachers and ministers. In some instances, quiltmakers charged a fee (sometimes as little as ten cents) to include names on quilts to raise money for a particular cause. – especially during war time. These were known as fundraiser or charity quilts and were often created dur-
and is very popular today. The Crafting Industry Alliance reports that 10-12 million quilters reside across the U.S. and Canada and the quilting
market is projected to reach $5 billion by 2026. Consequently, autograph quilts are again being made and are popular gifts – especially for bridal couples.
The Prairie Piecemakers quilt club will display autograph quilts from Prairie County during the upcoming county fair. We have quilts from Johnson Chapel, Oak Prairie, Center Point/Hazen, and DeValls Bluff. We would love to have others from our county. If you have a quilt that we could display, please contact Lawana Shuck or the Prairie County Extension Office. Prairie Piecemakers is an Extension Homemakers special interest club and is open to all.

quilts were given as farewell tokens to families whose pioneering spirit led them to seek a better life elsewhere. These quilts served as remembrances of family and friends and were considered valuable keepsakes rather than utilitarian quilts, thus many remain in exis-
ing wartime. They were then sold at raffles to make raise even more money for their cause.
All types of quilting waned after WWII. In the 1950’s and 60’s the art of quilting in America was in danger of disappearing. However, in the 1970’s quilting saw a rebirth

Commissioner of State Lands Tommy Land announced that his office will auction taxdelinquent parcels located in Arkansas, Lonoke and Prairie Counties on September 26. The regional auction begins at 10 a.m. and will be held at the Lonoke Community Center – Multi Purpose Room, 1355 West Front Street in Lonoke. Registration begins at 9:00 a.m.
“These new regional auctions will allow bidders to attend the sales for multiple counties without traveling to multiple locations or taking several days off work,” Commissioner of State Lands Tommy Land said. “This will also allow us to be more fiscally responsible by conducting fewer events.”
Auctions will be conducted alphabetically by county. Prospective bidders can find the Public Auction Catalog on the Commissioner’s website at www.cosl.org. This resource includes a buyer’s guide; statutes governing sales; auction
date, time and location; and a complete listing of parcels offered. The website also includes an instructional video demonstrating how to research information about each parcel available for sale.
“Owners of delinquent parcels going for auction should be aware that the redemption period has changed,” Land said. “Parcels must be redeemed by 4 p.m. on the last business day before the sale date. That means we must have their money and petition to redeem in our hands by that time.”
Auction sales are final, he emphasized. “Parcels sold at auction cannot be redeemed.”
Bidders must register for the auction before placing a bid. Purchases may be paid for with a business or personal check, or a credit or debit card. Cash is not accepted for purchase of tax-delinquent parcels.
“Property taxes help fund schools, roads, libraries and public services including ambulances,” Land said.
“Everyone benefits from paying those taxes — and the property owner
benefits from paying on time, by avoiding interest and penalties on delinquent taxes.”
Properties that do not sell at auction will appear on the COSL’s post-auction sales list 30 days after the auction date. From there, they can be purchased through an online auction system. Another instructional video on the COSL website demonstrates that process to bidders.
Owners of delinquent parcels may redeem those delinquent taxes online at www.cosl.org using a credit or debit card. Those who prefer to pay by check or money order can print a Petition to Redeem from the website or call the office at 501-324-9422 to request the petition, which must accompany their payment.
Owners seeking to redeem within 30 days before an auction must use certified funds or may redeem with cash in our office at 1020 W. 4th Street in Little Rock. Cash is only accepted for redemption, and only for in-person payments at 1020 W. 4th Street.

Eagles continue winning ways, pull away from Bald Knob
By Mark Buffalo Sports Editor
There was no letdown for the Des Arc Eagles. Des Arc, coming off an emotional overtime win over Hazen on Sept. 1, beat Class 4A Bald Knob 26-12 on Friday night. With the win, the Eagles improve to 2-0 on the season. The Bulldogs fall to 1-2.
Hornets bounce back with win over Clarendon Lions
By Mark Buffalo Sports Editor
The Hazen Hornets bounced back from it’s first regular-season loss since the middle of the 2021 season by beating Clarendon 34-20 on Friday night.
Josh Dawson started the scoring with an 8yard run. Landon Adkins scored on a 1yard run. Kolton Tosh scored on runs of 16, 14 and 34 yards.
The Hornets led 22-12 at halftime.
Tosh led the Hornets with 192 yards rushing on 23 carries. He also had 13 tackles on
defense. Akins had 11 tackles.
“With so many banged up, he had to be the man,” Hazen coach Joe Besancon said of Tosh. Besancon said it was important for his team to bounce back after losing to Des Arc in overtime the previous week.
“We’re trying to get ourselves back on track,” he said. “We’ve still got a lot of things we’ve got to clean up. We’re not playing as crisp as I’d like for us to be. We’re still not very fundamentally sound. A lot of that has to do with so many injuries, people banged up and
people out of position. We’ve got some kids out there, learning to play on the fly.
“Overall, I was real please. A couple of times I looked out there and had five or six kids out there that I wasn’t expecting to play.”
The Hornets play at McCrory this Friday.
The Jaguars are 1-1 after a 24-20 loss to Hector last Friday.
“We’re going to have another physical ball game,” Besancon said. “They’ve got good size across the front on both sides of the ball.”
(Ruth Corley photo.)
The score was tied 1212 at halftime. “We kept the ball away from them in the second half,” Des Arc coach Brandon Barbaree said. “We break a big run and
get a couple of stops. They had a full spread attack, but they weren’t getting anything going. Our kids just kinda made plays. We had three picks on the night.”
Hayden Brown had two interceptions while Kane Childers had one that changed the momentum of the game, Barbaree said.
Des Arc quarterback Cache Flanagan rushed for 130 yards and three touchdowns on 14 carries. He also scored a two-point conversion.
Cole Eldridge scored the other touchdown on a 57-yard run in the second half.
Barbaree said he was concerned about a letdown.
“Our Tuesday practice was not good,” he said. “It was 94 degrees. Our kids fought through it. Wednesday was a good practice. I cut it shorter. Our kids kind of figured it out. “I was very happy with the performance. I didn’t know we’d come out and play as hard as we did, but our kids figured it out.”
Bison come back with win over Cross County
By Mark Buffalo Sports Editor
The Carlisle Bison scored the only points of the game in the third quarter as they beat Cross County 7-0 on Friday night. With the win, the Bison improve to 2-1 on the season before hosting Des Arc in a nonconference game this Friday at Fred C. Hardke Field. In the win over the
Thunderbirds, Kayleb
Elliott scored on a 10yard run in the third quarter. Elliott had 57 yards rushing on 17 carries. Caleb Croucher kicked the extra point.
“I was proud of our kids,” Carlisle coach Gary Wilson said. “I told our kids after the game. Cross County is legit. They are good. They are talented everywhere. I told them after the
game that they set the tone all night. We had a good week of practice. I felt really good going over there. We had some guys step up and couldn’t have asked for anymore than that.”
Gabe Boyle led the Bison with 18 tackles. Lawson Petrus had 14. Bentley Parker had 11. Elliott and Jackson Cunningham had eight tackles each.
