“W re a t h s a cross Americ a” obser v ed in Ca rlisle

Wreaths Across America was observed at Carlisle Cemetery at 11:00 am Saturday, Dec 17. All across the country at that same hour and day, in 3,100 participating cemeteries such as the Carlisle Cemetery, veterans were honored with the placement of wreaths on their graves.

Carlisle American Legion Post 133 members, including Commander Michael McConaughy, assisted

location coordinators

Judi Jones and Jan Pasley, along with Cheryl Vickers, in the ceremony and in the placing of the wreaths.

Veterans from World War I, World War II, and Korea, as well as those who served but were never deployed overseas, were honored and their sacrifices remembered. Nineteen veteran wreaths were placed by family members and friends on individual graves, and eight military branch wreaths

were placed around the flagpole.

The purpose of Wreaths Across America is to remember the fallen, to honor those who have served and are serving now and their families, and to teach the next generation the price and value of freedom.

We hope to have more widespread participation next year. The ultimate goal is to place a wreath on every veteran's grave in the Carlisle Cemetery. Thanks to all those who participated.

Outgoing Des Arc council members recognized

At the December 20th Des Arc City Council meeting, outgoing council members Anna Beth Fisher, Ray McVay, and Gary Burnett were recognized for their years of service by Mayor Jim Garth.

Fisher and McVay (not pictured) have served as council members for 12 years, and Burnett has served for 4 years. Each council member thanked outgoing Mayor Jim Garth for his 20 years of service as well.

Attending the meeting were Mayor Jim Garth, Recorder/Treasurer Janice Huffstickler and council members Jodie Mayher, Nicole Fisher, Gail King, Gary Burnett and Anna Beth Fisher.

Mayor Garth reported that he will be signing a contract with the contractor to begin work on the hail damaged roof at the water plant. He also said that the insurance company will be contacted to re-negotiate the claim to try and get more money.

Mayor Garth reported that Ray Bell had planned to address the council again concerning the unkept property on Erwin Street, next to his grandmother’s house, but since he was not there he must be satisfied with the cleanup that has begun.

Garth said that letters had been sent to the owner, stating the property was in violation of the city’s codes, and the owner has begun clean-

ing up.

The council approved an ordinance amending the 2022 budget. Two other ordinances were passed - one to use money from state aid street program funds to re-pave streets and other to establish additional holidays for fulltime city employees.

The holidays approved include New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Day, Presidents’ Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving Day and the day after, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve, and the employee’s birthday. If a holiday falls on Saturday, it will be observed on Friday. If it falls on Sunday, it will be observed on Monday. The employee’s birthday may be taken whenever the employee chooses.

Mayor Garth reported that the city’s waterline on Highway 86 must be re-located by the Arkansas Department of Transportation, and they have received bids for the work Doxa Construction:

$370,401.18, White River Construction: $238,561.10, and J & R Construction: $188,342.00. The council approved the bid from J & R Construction and will inform ARDOT of their choice.

Gail King reported that the city has been awarded an outdoor recreation grant from the Arkansas Department of Heritage and Tourism. The matching grant is in the amount of $158,896.62 to construct

new bathrooms and concession stand at the city’s baseball park.

Mayor Garth opened the one bid received for the Police Department’s 2016 Dodge Charger. The bid was for $500 from Monroe County Sheriff Michael Neal. The council voted to not accept the bid and request bids again at a later date.

The council discussed the school’s request for an additional school resource officer. The

salary and benefits for the officer will be paid at 1/3 from the city, 1/3 from the county and 1/3 from the school just like the current officer is paid. The council voted to add the additional officer, pending approval by the county and the state.

The council approved a motion to appoint Joey York to replace J.H. Barnes for the remainder of his term on the Des Arc Zoning and Planning Commission.

HIPPY families enjoy cookies with Santa

On Monday, December 12, the Hazen HIPPY (Home Instructions for Parents of Preschool Youngsters) had their monthly group meeting at the Hazen Community Center.

The children were encouraged to wear their pajamas and bring their families. Once they arrived, they were greeted with excitement by Home Visitor, Linda Strohl and Coordinator Sam McDonnel. The children were very excited about the special visitor that would soon

join the meeting, but first they all listened to a story read by a home visitor from our site in Cabot, Beth Smith. The children loved the story.

Attendees were very excited when they heard the joyous HO!HO!HO! of their special guest.

Each child had the opportunity to sit on Santa’s lap and tell him what they wanted for Christms.

The children also were able to have their picture taken and were encouraged to write a letter to Santa. As the children finished seeing Santa, they went to the

tables and got to decorate and eat sugar cookies with their families.

At the end of the meeting, the children were given a goodie bag, a gingerbread train to put together at home as a family, and a book.

The Hazen HIPPY staff is very thankful for everyone who was able to attend. We would also like to thank everyone who helped make this meeting a success.

HIPPY would like to extend a special thank you to the City of Hazen for letting us use the Hazen Community Center.

The Prairie County Quorum Court met for its last regular meeting for 2022 on Tuesday, December 13 in the courthouse annex in the Des Arc. The outgoing County Judge Mike Skarda and all of the justices were present, along with County Clerk Gaylon Hale, and

County Attorney Abram Skarda. Also present was Sheriff Rick Hickman.

Outgoing Prairie County Judge Mike Skarda presented plaques to newly elected judge Lawrence Holloway and to Sandra Patterson, who is retiring from the Emergency

Services Department for their service to the county. Holloway has served on the quorum court for 28 years, and Patterson has been part of emergency services for over 32 years. When speaking of prior years’ flooding in the county, Skarda said “It would have been far worse if we hadn’t had Sandra.”

Judge Skarda announced that a fish lunch would be provided on December 20th for county employees. He also reported that work on county roads had been postponed due to rain. There was no old business.

Lawrence Holloway, who was recently elected to take over the judge position in the county, told the court that his committee has been working on the county budget.

Departmental budgets had been delayed by the recent hacking of the state’s computer system. A special meeting will have to be held to vote on the final budget before the end of the year.

At the end of the meeting, Skarda thanked the justices for their support

over the years. “Being a judge is a great blessing,” he said. “You can

do so much for people.” Skarda served the county for 14 years.

Bison Coach leaving school for insurance business

After five seasons and five trips to the playoffs, Carlisle football coach Caleb Shock is getting out of coaching.

Shock said last week that he is going back into the insurance business with his mother Sue. That’s what he was doing when he came to Carlisle prior to the 2018 season.

“The plan, right now, is go back to work for mom and do insurance,” Shock said. “That is kind of where plans are right now. I told the team that I’m not leaving Carlisle to take another coaching job. I’m not applying for any jobs. I’ve applied for only one job in my five years at Carlisle, and that was because of some special circumstances that was going to force me into it. I took my name out of consideration for that job.

“I told them that I’m not trying to job hop on them with the success that we had this year. I’m not leaving them for another group of kids. I’m most likely going to go do insurance. It will allow me a lot more time with my own kids than what coaching does. It will also provide a little bit bigger income to do some things.”

Shock and his wife Danielle had three children: daughter

Katherine, 6; son Ellis, 3; and son Weston, 7 months.

Shock, whose Bison team lost to Hazen in the Class 2A state championship game earlier this month, said leaving Carlisle is difficult.

“It is something that I’ve been wrestling with for a long time,” he said. “Danielle asks me all the time if I’m really sure that I want to be done. I think in the back of her mind, there’s a piece of her that likes being married to a coach. That part being gone will be a little different.

“The difficult part is the kids. The other stuff is not difficult. It’s the kids that you spend all your time with everyday. They put out a lot of effort for you and believe in you.”

Shock said he thought he was going to do insurance longterm but it was always a dream of his to be a head football coach.

“That didn’t happen during my time at Heber Springs,” he said. “I applied for a few spots and didn’t get them. Mom was getting ready to wind down. I was trying it out when BJ [Greene] called and said he had a head coaching job open. I told mom that I wanted to step back from insurance and do that, something that I always wanted to do.”

Shock said his time in Carlisle has been good.

“I’ve got to work with a lot of players that I hopefully will have relationships with that will last for a long time, and faculty members as well,” he said. “I made a lot of relationships there that hopefully will carry on.”

Shock’s father Steve was the Carlisle Bison football coach in 1988.

“I don’t know if I ever really thought much about that he coached at Carlisle and now I’m coaching at Carlisle,” Caleb Shock said. “My first year, he drove down every day to help me coach. He came to every practice The last four years, he came to nearly every single game. He helped me out and gave me ideas. Kind of getting to work with him during my time here is what I focused on.”

Shock also said he would be willing to help out the new Bison coach on Friday nights, getting on a headset to help the team.

“If they were open to it and willing, for whatever next staff, I’d like to have a minor role,” he said.

“Even if it’s just showing up on Friday nights and be in the press box with a headset on, just helping the coaches on the field.”

The Liar in the Red Suit ...

Around this time of the year, The Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage and I revel in our family memories. Unlike me, she has some wonderful memories because of her large family. I came from a very small family and therefore don't have that many memories let alone wonderful memories.

This reminded me of my first encounter with what my parents called Santa Claus.

Growing up, we didn't have television, and the teachers at the school I attended were mostly Mennonites. They didn't celebrate Santa Claus, and there was no mention of him in our classes. Christmas was focused on the birth of Christ.

In a small town like ours, there weren't any shopping malls, so there was no place for Santa Claus to set up his little booth and greet all the little children during the Christmas season.

Then one Christmas, Santa Claus and his entourage set up in our downtown square. Everybody was invited to come and see Santa Claus.

I mentioned this to my father and asked him about Santa Claus.

"Well," my father said, "you go see Santa Claus, sit on his lap and tell him what you want for Christmas."

When I heard that my eyes just lit up in great delight. "You mean I can tell Santa Claus what I want for Christmas?"

With a smile on his face, my father shook his head most energetically. I believed him; after all, fathers don't lie.

All I ever wanted for Christmas when I was young was a pony. Now, with Santa Claus in town, I had the opportunity to request a pony for this Christmas. I can't tell you how excited I was.

My parents took me and my siblings downtown at the square to meet Santa Claus. I was excited, and so were my siblings. We chattered and chattered all the way the Santa's place. We told each other what we wanted Santa to bring us for Christmas.

I remember that first experience with Santa Claus. As I walked up and sat in his lap, I was a wee bit nervous. Then the thoughts dancing in my head was that this was my opportunity to get my long-awaited pony for Christmas "Ho, ho, ho, and what

would you like for Christmas this year, little fella?"

I wanted to hear that all my life. I then explained to him that all I wanted for Christmas was a pony. Any color pony would do as long as it was a pony. So I explained to him what I would do with a pony and how it would change my life and everything.

As he listened to me, he was chuckling, "Ho, ho, ho."

When I finished my request, he said, "Young man is that really what you want for Christmas?

If so, you'll have to be nice and not naughty because if you're naughty, I can't do it."

With a hearty nod and a smile on my face, I promised I would never be naughty.

As I left dear old Santa's lap, all I could think of was how this little pony he would bring me on Christmas day would change my life. That's all I could talk about on the way home that day.

I did notice that my father and mother were looking at each other but not smiling and I did not catch what was happening.

On Christmas Eve, as we got the Christmas tree all ready, I was

I couldn't wait to get up that morning, and I ran into the living room where the Christmas tree was. I shouted excitedly, "Where's my pony?"

My father tried to explain that perhaps I had been on Santa's "naughty list," and he couldn't bring me that pony for Christmas this year.

I shed tears all day, and the following days were terrible. For the next three Christmases, I did the same thing. Every Christmas, Santa promised to bring me a pony for Christmas as long as I was not naughty. Christmas after Christmas and no pony. time. I could not believe that that wonderful person called Santa Claus could ever lie to someone like me. So what did I ever do to get on his naughty list?

I never went back to sit on Santa's lap ever again. But, later in life, I realized that the guy in the red suit was lying to me, and he wasn't really Santa Claus. Thinking about this I remembered what the Angels told the shepherds on that glorious day. “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.” (Luke 2:11-12).

The real purpose of Christmas is celebrating the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ. My life changed when I received him as my Lord and Savior. Yours can too.
