Bison, Hornets, Eagles start playoffs at home By Mark Buffalo Sports Editor All three local teams will play at home in the first round of the Class 2A state playoffs this week. Carlisle, the 2A-4 conference champion, will host McCrory, the fourth seed from the 2A-2 conference. The Jaguars are 5-5 on the season while the Bison are 9-1. McCrory, which won the Class 2A title in 2021, is returning to the playoffs
after missing a year ago. “There are five teams that are playoff caliber teams in that conference,” Carlisle coach Gary Wilson said. “Somebody has got to get left out (Cross County). They [Jaguars] are a good football team. They are not your typical four seed.” Wilson said McCrory has a good running back and quarterback. “And they play hard,” he said. “It will be a challenge for us. We’ll
have to play well.” Hazen will play Marked Tree, the third seed from the 2A-2. The Indians are 7-2 on the season while the Hornets are 82. Both of Marked Tree’s losses came in overtime. They lost to Des Arc 6664 in double overtime and conference champion East Poinsett County 3832 last Thursday. “The scary thing about them is that they’ve lost two games, and they were both in overtime,” Hazen coach Joe
Hazen. Des Arc is the second seed from the 2A2. “They are going to put us in situations because they have speed,” Des Arc coach Brandon Barbaree said. “They are very athletic. I know a lot of those guys are basketball players too. Athletes in space are dangerous.” Tickets to all playoff games must be purchased from the AAA on this website: https://gofan.co/app/school/AAA
Besancon said. “I’m watching the films. Those are two games that they should have won. They are really really good. Their quarterback and their running back are probably the best combo I’ve seen this year. It’s going to be a very tough ball game.” Des Arc will host the England Lions in the first round. The Lions are 5-5 on the season, having finished third in the 2A-4 conference behind Carlisle and

who loved and helped her for many years prior to her moving from Texas to Arkansas. Marty graduated from Hazen High School, where she was active in the HHS Band, and was the first Drum Major. Marty joined the Air Force in 1962. After her initial training at Lackland AFB, she was stationed at Shaw AFB in Columbia, South Carolina. She then trained to be a flight nurse and was sent to Rhein Main AFB. While there, she flew into Vietnam, escorting injured military members to various medical centers throughout the United States. As the war was coming to a close, she was sent to the Philippines, to welcome the POW’s home and help with their medical care. She was stationed at Chute AB in Illinois, Wright-Patterson AFB in Ohio, Little Rock AFB, and Wilford Hall medical center in San Antonio, Tx where she ran the Outpatient Clinic. One of the highlights of her career was that she was one of the first three nurses to be selected to be a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. While serving in the Air Force, she received 2 Masters degrees: one from Incarnate Word University and one from Webster University. She was extremely passionate about education, encouraging everyone she met to pursue higher education. She was active in the Democratic Party and was honored to be at Bill Clinton’s inauguration in 1993. Some of the many organizations she supported were the Feminist Majority based in Los Angeles, Emily’s List based in Washington DC, and Planned Parenthood of South Central Texas. She was proud to be from Hazen and extremely proud of her single mother who worked hard to provide for her and her sister, and her grandparents who helped raise her. She loved to collect books, clocks, and model trains because her grandfather worked for the railroad. Her proudest accomplishment was her relationship with Pat McGuire. They were together for 42 years before Pat’s death on October 1, 2017. We want to thank Brookdale Assisted Living in Conway, Arkansas and the Greenbrier Nursing & Rehab Center for their loving care during Marty’s last year on earth. Donations may be made, in lieu of flowers to: San Antonio Food Bank at: 5200 Historic, Old Hwy 90 W, San Antonio, TX 78227. Carlisle to participate in Wreaths Across America Each year, millions of Americans come together to remember the fallen, honor those that serve and their families, and teach the next generation about the value of freedom. This gathering of volunteers and patriots takes place in local, state, and national cemeteries in all 50 states as part of National Wreaths Across America Day. In December of 2022, the Carlisle Cemetery participated for the first time, and this year the ceremony will once again be observed at the Carlisle Cemetery. The event will take place on Saturday, December 16, at 11:00 AM at the Carlisle Cemetery pavilion. After a short ceremony, wreaths will be placed by family members and volunteers on the headstones of local heroes who have been laid to rest here. The goal is to ensure that the individ-
uals who served to protect the freedoms of our country will never be forgotten. US military service wreaths to honor all branches of the military will also be placed around the flagpole. At the Carlisle Cemetery, 19 veterans’ wreaths were placed in 2022. The organizers hope many more wreaths will be placed this year to honor more military heroes. In 2022, more than 2.7 million veterans’ wreaths were placed by volunteers on headstones at 3,702 participating locations around the country in honor of the service and sacrifices made for our freedoms, with each name said out loud. A new theme is chosen each year to help volunteers and supporters focus their messaging and outreach in their own communities. This year, the national nonprofit announced the theme for 2023 is “Serve
and Succeed.” Those interested in volunteering for Wreaths Across America or sponsoring (providing) a wreath at the Carlisle Cemetery are invited to visit ww.wreathsacrossamerica.org/ARC RLC to learn more. Wreaths Across America is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded to continue and expand the annual wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery begun by Maine businessman Morrill Worcester in 1992. The organization’s mission – Remember, Honor, Teach – is carried out in part each year by coordinating wreath-laying ceremonies in December at Arlington, as well as at thousands of veterans’ cemeteries and other locations in all 50 states and beyond. Bison edge Hornets to win 2-A4 conference By Mark Buf falo Spor ts Editor HAZEN — As most fans believed it would be, Carlisle and Hazen played each other equally hard in the defacto 2A-4 conference championship game Friday night at Hornets Field. Carlisle edged the defending state champion Hornets 20-14 to win the conference title and earn homefield advantage through at least the second round of the playoffs. The conference title was the first for the Bison since sharing the 2012 2A-6 title with Hazen. Their last outright conference title was 2011
when the Bison finished as Class 2A state runners-up. “It is huge,” Carlisle coach Gary Wilson said. “That was our first goal to win the conference championship. We figured it would come down to us and Hazen. To be able to beat them makes it even more special.” Hazen led 6-0 in the first quarter when Braylan Anderson scored on a three-yard run. That score held up until the third quarter when the Bison took a 7-6 lead. Holden Jones scored on a three-yard run then Jimmy Cham added the extra point with 8:02 left in the third quarter.
HHS seniors at college fair... The HHS Seniors had a great time learning about college and career opportunities at the College and Career Fair held at ASU Beebe.
Carlisle pushed its lead to 14-6 with 37 seconds left in the third quarter on a two-yard run by Jones. Cham kicked the extra point. Hazen tied it at 1414 early in the fourth quarter when Josh Dawson threw to Justin Schlenker for the touchdown. Anderson added the two-point conversion. After trading possessions, the Bison took a 20-14 lead when Jones threw a 69-yard touchdown pass to Gavin Davis with 3:40 left in the game. The extra point hit the upright. Hazen’s next possession ended when Carlisle’s Gavin Richter picked off his third pass of the game. Carlisle then picked up a first down inside Hazen territory. After the next first down play, the officials inexplicably changed the down marker to

third. After the next play, the Bison attempted a long field goal on what was actually third down but the officials said it was fourth down. Hazen took over at its own 20. The Bison eventually forced the Hornets to turn the ball over on downs to secure the conference title. “We’ve had some really good games defensively this year, but this might have been as well as we’ve played all year,” Wilson said. “We limited their big plays, and our guys flew to
the ball. They tackled really well. “Before the game, we thought the key to the game was our outside linebackers — Dylan White and Lawson Petrus. They played their best games of the year. Offensively, we did enough to win the game. We made plays when it counted.” Hazen coach Joe Besancon said this was the kind of game he expected. “I knew both of us were pretty evenly matched,” he said. “They made a couple less mistakes than what we made. We had a mental breakdown on a coverage. I knew going into the game that we were a little weak in a spot and knew they would attack it at some point. I expected them to hit a big one on us like that on that pass. That didn’t bother me as much as our mental mistakes did. “We had them third and 10 and got an
unsportsmanlike penalty because we couldn’t keep our mouth shut. That gave them a first down, and they ended up scoring on that drive. We just had some mental breakdowns.” Jones completed 7 of 10 passes for 144 yards. Davis caught 2 passes for 69 yards. Devin Cooney caught 3 passes for 34 yards. Kaiden Clingmon and Gabe Boyle each caught one pass. Schlenker led the Hornets with seven catches for 83 yards and a touchdown. Dawson passed for 113 yards and ran for 91. Tosh led the Hornets with 15 tackles. Noah Adkins had 12 tackles. Shelton Kitchens had nine tackles, including four for losses. Carlisle opens the playoffs at home against McCrory on Friday night. Hazen opens the playoffs at home against Marked Tree.
Eagles earn home playoff game By Mark Buffalo Sports Editor The Des Arc Eagles broke their two-game losing skid with a 38-30 win over rival McCrory on Thursday night. With the win, the Eagles earned the second seed from the 2A-2 conference. They were tied with Marked Tree but own the tiebreaker over the Indians by virtue of their 66-64 double overtime win Oct. 6. The game with McCrory was tied heading into the
fourth quarter. The Eagles then scored a touchdown to take the lead. Des Arc trailed by six points at halftime. Des Arc running back Dayvion Bell had 119 yards rushing on 12 carries. He scored a touchdown and a two-point conversion. Quarterback Cache Flanagan led the Eagles with 118 yards on 22 carries. He scored two touchdowns and two twopoint conversions. Cole Eldridge had 61 yards rushing on 13 carries. He
scored a touchdown. Hayden Brown scored a touchdown as well. Walker Harris also scored a two-point conversion. “It was either win or we were done,” Des Arc coach Brandon Barbaree said. “Our kids did fight with a little desperation. We snuck in there as the two seed. “That’s how tough and competitive our conference was. It was a fight every week. We found enough wins to get the two seed.”

Everybody has their own comfort food. I have a long list of comfort food, and Apple Fritter is at the top. Nothing comforts me quite like a fresh Apple Fritter. The other day I needed some comfort food. After all, life can be rather stressful, and you either deal with the stress or let it deal with you. The Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage planned to spend the day thrift store shopping with one of our daughters. Thus, I had a whole day to deal with my stress. The first thing I did was go where I usually get my Apple Fritter. I was quite excited on my way there, knowing I would have all day to enjoy my favorite comfort food. Even thinking about it caused me to lose a lot of my stress. Then the unthinkable happened. I got to the place to purchase my Apple Fritter and was shocked to find they had no Apple Fritters in stock. They were out and did not know when any would be available. If I had stress at the beginning of the day, it was nothing compared to the stress I was now experiencing. How can
any store run out of the most important food item in the world? Staring at the cashier, I said, "Could you check your inventory to see if maybe there’s one you missed?" She did, and much to my chagrin, there was none to be found. I staggered outside, as stressed as I've ever been in my life. What in the world am I going to do without an Apple Fritter? Especially at a time when I can sneak one behind the back of The Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage. As I drove home, I didn't know what to do. I spent the whole day trying to figure this out, and if my luck is as it usually is, I will discover a solution three minutes before The Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage walks in the door. As I walked into the house thinking about this, I got a fresh cup of coffee, went to my easy chair, and tried to think through this problem. No comfort food qualifies for my stress situation at this time. I did not want to sit with my stress all day. It’s usually bad company. I had to
come up with a solution. My wife is the one who always comes up with solutions, but I'm sure she would not volunteer any solution on this subject. Sitting in my chair sipping coffee, trying to figure out what to do, I then thought of chocolate. Next to an Apple Fritter, a piece of chocolate is on my list of comfort foods. We are not allowed to have chocolate in our house because, according to The Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage, chocolate gives her headaches. I must say I'm a little bit jealous. I thought I was the only one giving her headaches, and now she's cheating on me with chocolate headaches. They give her headaches instead of me? How dare they? I knew we had none in the house, so I had to go out somewhere and get some delicious chocolate before she got home. It didn't take long to get to the store, where I knew they had some nice chocolate candy. I went in, bought some, and headed for my vehicle to go home. I was so happy that my stress was almost gone before I took
a bite of that chocolate. I got home, got another fresh cup of coffee, sat in my easy chair and slowly opened this delicious chocolate candy bar. I looked at it very deliciously and reverently bowed to take my first bite. I barely started to chew when all of the stress in my life ran for cover. I slowly chewed and chewed and chewed, and before I knew it, that chocolate bar disappeared. But so did my stress. Isn't it wonderful when you can deal with a problem so quickly? Later that day, I heard The Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage pull into the driveway. Soon, she was at the door and walked in. As usual, she came over to kiss me, and I welcomed her back home. Then she stopped, turned around, and looked at me with one of her looks. That kind of look told me I was in some trouble. I could not figure out the trouble, but there it was. "Oh my," she groaned as she stared at me. "I'm starting to get a headache. You did not have any chocolate candy today, did you?"
"What makes you say that?" I said as nicely as possible. "When I kissed you I tasted chocolate. Did you have a chocolate bar while I was gone?" All the stress I got rid of with my chocolate bar is now back because of that chocolate bar. For the life of me, I certainly cannot sort this out. I then thought of one of my favorite scriptures. “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7). Comfort food is temporary, but "the peace of God" endures forever. When I give my stress to God, He is dependable and will watch over my heart and mind.
