Saint Katharine Drexel's humble lifestyle In the book Reflections on Life in the Vine, Saint Katharine Drexel said, “Be humble, since whatever you are, whatever you have and whatever you do for yourself and others proceeds from a pure act of God’s mercy and the assistance of His grace.”
Saint Katharine Drexel lived a life of humility, “All who exalt themselves will be humbled, and all who humble themselves will be exalted.” It is written that, “She saw humility as an indispensable ‘help’ toward every virtue.” She herself wrote that, “There is no virtue without humility. Humility becomes a foundation; it is not an end in itself.” The chapter on humility ends with the following maxim of St. Katharine Drexel, “A dose of humility, increased daily over a lifetime, will make us light enough to be carried by the Spirit, honest enough to understand our place, and childlike enough to be carried into the ocean of mercy and love.” Quotes are taken from Mother Katharine's prayer notes / her journal.

St. Katharine Drexel's humble lifestyle and her words, “O Divine Spirit, I wish to be before You as a light feather, so that Your Breath may carry me where You will.”

SISTER GRACE MARY BIDS FAREWELL TO XAVIER When Sister Grace Mary was not in the classroom, she served as Xavier’s faculty athletics representative for 36 years. Sister Grace Mary joined Xavier’s Biology department in 1968 and has been a proud faculty member. She embodies what it means to be an outstanding faculty member.

This year we honored and bid farewell to our long-time faculty member and Sister of the a Blessed Sacrament, Sr. Grace Mary Flickinger. Sister Grace Mary’s time at Xavier has brought joy, purpose, and wisdom to the lives of the Xavier community.

“I remember my freshman year in Bio lab with Sister. She always had a way of turning the simplest of assignments into a world of fun. When I’d stumble, she was always available for help.” -Kayla Davis, Junior Class of 2019

4 X

On October 10th, Sister Grace Mary was honored for her 50 years of service during Founder’s Day convocation. Sister shared some words of wisdom and reflection on her time at Xavier University. In recognition for her time and amazing service, she was named Professor Emerita of Biology. “We are grateful for her many decades of service,” President Verret said.

memorial 2017-18 “Offer to God the sacrifice of Praise.”

Sister Maureen Hurley, S.B.S.

January 22, 1922-March 28, 2017 Sister Maureen Hurley, S.B.S., Professor Emeritus and a respected and well-loved professor in the Department of Biology, served at Xavier from 1966 until her retirement in 2010.

Sister Patricia Lynch, S.B.S. February 4, 1928 ~ October 7, 2017

In 1967 Sister taught History at Xavier University in New Orleans. After Sister received her Ph.D. in American History she returned to teach at Xavier University, where she also served as advisor for the graduate programs. In 1984 Sr. Patricia was asked to come to the motherhouse to write the history of the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament. She did a great deal of research in the congregational archives, and even traveled to some of the rural missions in Louisiana. Sr. Pat explained that it took over a decade to complete Sharing the Bread in Service: SBS 1891-1991. She commented that the greatest honor of those days was being given Rev. Mother Katharine’s room for her office and bedroom. Going to Rome for the beatification and canonization ceremonies for St. Katharine Drexel while she was writing the history was also very special for Sister. In 1998 Sister returned to New Orleans to work on the history of Xavier University, at the request of President Norman Francis. In 2011, Sister returned to the motherhouse in Bensalem, Penn.

Eloise Blandin Simmons, A.S.B.S.

April 16, 1920-January 24, 2018 For more than fifty years Eloise worked at Xavier as an administrative assistant to Sister Mary Clair Hous, S.B.S., Dean and Dr. Norman Francis, President. Eloise was married to Arthur F. Simmons, Jr., Xavier alum, 1942. She was also one of the original New Orleans Associates of the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, since 1992.

Xavier’s Five Heroes On Monday, Oct. 2, 2017, a tragic accident involving a male driver occured in the nearby canal. The vehicle hit a wooden pole, flipped over the cement wall and went into the canal. Five Xavier students witnessed the accident and acted quickly in an effort to save his life.

One of five heroes, Moses Michael L-R: Demetrios Brown; Joseph Byrd, vice present, student services; Dr. C. Reynold Verret, Xavier president, Ronald Haroon (junior, biology) ; Markevion Kennebrew (freshman, biochemistry); Moses Micheal (not shown-sophomore, business management); and Domonique Prophete (junior, biology pre-med).

“The driver pleaded for help and I could not turn my back away from the situation. We actually made a chain and one person was holding onto the wall because it was really steep. Dom gave me his jacket, we pulled the door open, and helped the driver out,” Haroon said. Four of Xavier’s courageous heroes pose for a picture with members of the New Orleans City Council. Front L-R: Dr. C. Reynold Verret, Xavier president; Demetrios Brown; and Jared Brossett, Councilman.

Dominique Prophete, Demetrios Brown, Ronald Haroon, Markevion Kennebrew, and Moses Michael were courageous enough to create a human ladder to get the injured driver out of the car. The heroes faced a great deal of danger by climbing down such a steep wall. They willingly entered the area where a live wire was sparking next to them. Prior to the incident, most of the gentlemen did not know each other, but knew it was a night they’d never forget.

X

160

Without their courageous act, the driver of the vehicle could have bled out, drowned, or been electrocuted while trapped in his vehicle. “Their action was a true act of courage, deserving of praise. It made both the school and the City of New Orleans proud,“ said Jared Brossett, District “D” Councilman. The five heroes actions embodied Xavier’s mission statement of service to mankind.
