You cannot be a phony in the radio business and stay on the air, and that’s the same people who will be at Buddy’s. “They did an hour or so of meet and greet, but then hung around and gave everyone a chance to talk with them or take a picture. Plus we will have great music with The Dividends and our Bar B Que buffet is pulled pork and pulled chicken, smoked chicken wings, pork and beans, potato salad, lots more and a dessert, if you want. the declaration, “Don’t Give Up The Ship!” which became the rallying cry of the United States Navy. Nestled along the Ohio River and bordering both West Virginia and Kentucky, Lawrence County is a land of contrasts, secrets and intrigue — at one time in its history hiding slaves who were desperately trying to escape to freedom via the Underground Railroad, and at another time housing one of the richest women in the country who also happened to be the only female ironmaster in the world. John Rankin of Ironton helped more than 2,000 slaves escape to freedom north of the Mason-Dixon Line by making their way to Ohio from Kentucky and western Virginia. Harriet Beecher Stowe, the writer of Uncle Tom’s Cabin, fashioned a character out of a story Rankin told her about an escape over a frozen Ohio River. The Ironton-Lawrence County Memorial Day Parade is a long-standing tradition in Ironton. Memorializing those who fought for our country’s freedom. The first parade was held in 1868 and has continued every year since up to and including the 2018 parade, the 150th parade. This makes the Ironton-Lawrence County Memorial Day Parade the oldest continuously running Memorial Day Parade in the United State. In it’s beginning, three years following the end of America’s bloodiest battle the Civil War, aka The War Between The States - brother versus brother in the fighting was not rare. Following the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Johnson began a term that took him into 1898. Misfits and castoff injured servicemen were more a part of the new postwar society than marching bands or soldiers. That didn’t stop Ironton, a small town in southeast Ohio and one of the important stops in the antislavery movement’s Underground Railroad leading up to the war. In 1868, the town built on iron ore honored all veterans of its town, the county of Lawrence and other veterans in the Tri-State cities along the Ohio River from Ohio, Kentucky and West Virginia 150 years later, for 2018, the parade begins at 10 a.m. on Memorial Day and consists of 12 divisions. In these divisions, the tens of thousands of people lining the parade route are able to enjoy marching bands, clowns, funny cars, dance studios, fire trucks, beauty queens, and numerous floats from all around the Tri-State area. Approximately 1,000 people participate in the parade, making it a resounding success year after year. If you haven’t seen the parade before, make your way on Memorial Day to Ironton, Ohio, in Lawrence County, for America’s longest-continual running parade for Memorial Day, this year on Monday, May 28, just down the mighty Ohio River from Ashland, Ky., and Huntington, W.Va. After the parade, hang out in Ironton, a town full of history. It is the home and county seat of Lawrence County. The county was set up in 1816, and named for the American naval hero of the War of 1812, Captain James Lawrence. Aboard the U.S.S. Chesapeake (another Lawrence County town is named for the ship) rallied his sailors with

John Campbell, the founder of Ironton, envisioned a large manufacturing town springing up in a short time in an 1849 letter to a cousin. Campbell had about $1,000 in his pockets when he came to Lawrence County in 1832 at the age of 24. He assisted in the building of the Hanging Rock forge. He lived in the Hanging Rock area until 1850. Nannie Kelly Wright, born in 1856, was the world’s only female ironmaster. An Ironton resident, Wright came to own some of the 90 local iron ore furnaces in the area. Iron from the furnaces was used to make cooking utensils, heating stoves and cannons, among other things. Finally, make a visit to Tanks Memorial Stadium, home to the Ironton Tigers high school football team. The field is a rare site, a covered seating area that keeps the fans dry in rain or snow games, and has since the Tanks were established as a professional football team in 1919. The Tanks were 88-17-15 in their era and regularly beat teams in the NFL. The Tanks included Glenn Presnell as an outstanding player who also taught science at Ironton High. He had played at and graduated from Nebraska, and joined the Tanks in 1929. In 1930, the Tanks beat both the Chicago Bears (26-13), led by coach and end George Halas as well as Red Grange, “The Galloping Ghost” out of Illinois, and the NY Giants (13-12) in a pair of games played at the home of the Cincinnati Reds, Redleg Field. Presnell joined the Portsmouth (Ohio) Spartans in 1931 after the Tanks folded in the post Wall Street Crash (moving down the Ohio River about 25 miles). Three years later, Portsmouth moved to Michigan in 1934 to become the Detroit Tigers. Presnell not only picked the Honolulu Blue the Lions still wear as a team color but helped them to an NFL Championship in 1935, after playing for the title indoors in 1933 against the Bears in a snowstorm outside the arena. Ironton is a town full of history, and history will be on display May 28 for the 105th Ironton-Lawrence County Memorial Day Parade.

LOGAN, W.Va. - The Hatfield–McCoy Trails (http://www.trailsheaven.com), located in Wild and Wonderful West Virginia, is a nationally known trail system most popular for its off-highway vehicle trails. The trail system is a multi-county project, including West Virginia counties of Logan, Kanawha, Wyoming, McDowell, Mercer, Wayne, Lincoln, Mingo and Boone. The trails are managed by the Hatfield–McCoy Regional Recreation Authority, a legislatively created quasi-state agency and its paid staff, which is governed by a multi-county board of directors. The name of the trail system is derived from the names of two families, the West Virginian’s named Hatfield and Kentucky based McCoys. The two families famously feuded back and forth across the Tug River, the border between the two states, after the Civil War, when family members fought on both sides of the War Between the States. The trail system officially opened under the name Hatfield-McCoy in October 2000 with 300 miles (480 km) of trail operations. Currently there are six of the nine WV counties (Wyoming, McDowell, Mercer, Mingo, Logan, and Boone) with over 600 miles of off-highway vehicle (OHV) trails. An expansion plan for the trail system plans for 2,000 miles of trails with suitable facilities and an Off-Highway Vehicle Park located in Kanawha County. West Virginia is known as “Almost Heaven,” so it’s only natural the Hatfield-McCoy Trails have become known as “Trails Heaven.” If you have questions, feel free to call the Hatfield-McCoy offices at 1-800-592-2217. Welcome to “Trails Heaven,” a system of professionally managed trails that are the most enjoyable in the country. Current trail system names (trailhead facility names in parentheses) include Bearwallow (Dingess-Rum), Buffalo Mountain (Delbarton), Indian Ridge (Ashland), Pinnacle Creek (Castlerock), Pocahontas (Bramwell), Devil Anse, which is named for the leader of the Hatfields, (Matewan) and Rockhouse (Browning Fork). Only the Paiute ATV Trail in Central Utah has more miles of trails (2,000 miles).

TRAIL SYSTEM GUIDE Trail System Info Trail System Name & Logo The Hatfield-McCoy Trail System caters to ATV, UATV, and motorbikes (dirt bikes), but hikers, mountain bikers and horse riders can also use the trails. The trail system staff not only markets the trail system globally (the trails now receive visitors from all 50 states and nine countries), but also builds, maps and maintains the trail system. Law enforcement officers patrol the trail to assure compliance with safety regulations. Motorized users of the trail system must wear a DOT-approved helmet and are prohibited from “doubling” (having a passenger), unless their vehicle is designed for two people. These rules, and a host of others, have allowed the trail system to enjoy a quality safety record, despite an increase in ATV-related injuries around the country.

The Bearwallow Trail System is most noted for being one of three original HMT systems (opened in October of 2000). It is also noted for its more difficult rated trails, most difficult rated trails, and difficult single track. Bearwallow is located near the historic site of the Battle of Blair Mountain, and has direct trail access to and from the town of Logan, W.Va. The trailhead is located at 247 Bearwallow Drive, Ethel, W.Va. (latitude 37.86384, longitude -81.93193), Bearwallow has a 2.5-acre parking lot, staffed trailhead, on site restrooms, permits, merchandise (food, fuel and lodging) in Logan.

PECK FEST BACK FOR YEAR 4 By Woody Woodrum

POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. — Peck Fest is back for year four. Since 2015, Peck Fest has had the lineup like a 20-year old festival, with folks like Joe Diffie, Matt Matheney, Rodney Atkins, Aaron Lewis, and Chris Jansen, playing here. Peck Fest is again located at the Kanawha River Campground, at 10758 Charleston Road, just off Route 62 by the Kanawha River, in beautiful Point Pleasant, W.Va., the county seat of Mason County and where the Kanawha River meets the Ohio River. This area is known for its many events — with things like the Mothman Festival in October, the Breaking Chains Musical Festival earlier this summer and the Mason County Fair. Peck Fest is a young event, but its talent has been off the charts. “It is something we pride ourselves on,” said Garry Peck of Peck Fest. “We have managed to have great acts like Joe Diffie and this year with the legendary Travis Tritt, but have also brought along young country that is moving its way up the charts.

Most would say football’s loss is music’s gain, and his decade in Nashville has seen a quick rush for the singer-songwriter. Rice toured with Kenny Chesney and The Cadillac Three in 2015. The next year, he was on the “Back to College Tour,” then toured with Ryan Hurd and Lacy Cavlier and others in 2016 on the “Everybody We Know Does Tour.” His album release in 2017 was “Lambs and Lions” (featuring the songs “Lions,” “Three Chords and The Truth,” and “Eyes on You”). His summer tour is rocking towns from New England to the mid-Atlantic region, the Midwest to, of course, his home states in the South, along with stops in Nebraska, Wyoming and across the border in Canada. Peck said this year’s talent is another great lineup for the fourth-year, self-made festival. “This festival is long on music talent and good times for all,” Peck said. “You need to bring a chair or blanket, plant yourself and get ready to have great music, good food, all sorts of vendors and fun at the Peck Fest 2018.” Two day passes are $75 for a pit pass right in front of the bands, or $60 tickets will cover you for two nights. If you can only do Friday night or Saturday night, each night is only $35 (although the Pit Friday or Saturday are each $50). Tent camping is available for one vehicle at just $30 per night. If you have a camper, the price is $100 (min. 3-night stay) and you can be a VIP campers for $200.

“You add that to our inexpensive admission prices and low camping fees, I think we have one of the best festivals in the local area. We are hoping this season’s festival will be bigger and better than ever.” The 2018 lineup includes Pennsylvania’s Steve Moakler (7:30 p.m.), who will release his fourth album (Born Ready) later this year and appeared back in June for a concert at NASCAR’s Pocono Raceway concert, and Travis Tritt (9:30 p.m.) on Friday night. Also on Friday will be Carolina-born Mikele Buck Band to open the evening around 6 p.m. Moakler has written songs for artists like Dierks Bentley (his 2015 hit, “Riser”), Jake Owen, Eric Church, and Kellie Pickler. Last year, he joined Tim McGraw and Faith Hill on their Soul2Soul World Tour. In 10 years in Nashville, Moakler has built his career the old fashioned way: hard work, strong handshakes and miles on the road. What can be said about Travis Tritt that hasn’t been said. Since hitting the charts in 1989, Tritt has released 12 albums, had five Billboard No. 1 singles, has won awards from Billboard, the Country Music Association, and has two Grammy Awards under his belt. Tritt also has 27 appearances in both television and major motion pictures, including the recently released “Forever My Girl” this year. His No. 1 include “Help Me Hold On”; “Anymore”; “Can I Trust You With My Heart”; “Foolish Pride”; and “Best of Intentions.” His stop at Peck Fest is one of 46 stops this summer on his tour, which includes a stop at the West Virginia State Fair in August. On Saturday, the music gets started around 6 p.m. with local musician Dillion Jarrell, who debut EP album is “No Place Like Home.” At 7:30 p.m., Muscadine Bloodline takes the Peck Fest stage, and these guys are “Unapologetically Alabama.” Natives of Mobile, Alabama, Gary Stanton and Charlie Muncaster came together to form Muscadine Bloodline in early 2016. With three single releases under their belt and a schedule full of shows spanning from coast to coast, they’ve hit the ground running from day one. Nashville took notice the first time these two stepped on the stage and it’s no surprise the rest of the music world is quickly catching on. Muscadine Bloodline is heading to Peck Fest as part of a tour started back on May 5, in which they will stop in Delaware, Virginia, Tennessee, Mississippi, South Carolina, California, Georgia, Kentucky, Illinois, Arkansas, Texas, Indiana and West Virginia by the time they get to Point Pleasant. Finally, headliner Chase Rice takes the stage on Saturday night about 9:30 p.m. Rice, 33-years old, is an American country music singer, songwriter, and reality television personality. He first came to prominence in 2010, when he was a contestant on Survivor: Nicaragua, where he was the runner-up to Jud “Fabio” Birza. Rice first co-wrote the single “Cruise” performed by Florida Georgia Line, then released the EP Ready album, “Set Roll,” featuring the single “Ready Set Roll,” on October 15, 2013. The full-length album “Ignite the Night” was released on August 19, 2014, and includes “Ready Set Roll”. On August 27, 2014. “Ignite The Night” debuted at No. 1 on Billboard Top Country Albums. He first came to prominence in 2010, when he was a contestant on “Survivor: Nicaragua,” where he was the runner-up to Jud “Fabio” Birza. Rice also grew up in Asheville, N.C. (born there in 1985), where Marshall’s Thundering Herd basketball team ruled the roost in the 1980s at the Southern Conference Tournament. Rice was a linebacker for the University of North Carolina out of AC Reynolds High School in Asheville, but an injury prevented his from pursuing dreams of a pro football career.

Kentucky State Fair 2018 − 111th Annual

August 16-26 Louisville, Ky. www.kystatefair.org First organized in 1816, the Ky. State Fair did not become an official state fair until 1902, with its permanent home at the 520-acre Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville. The unique, family friendly 11-day festival that celebrates local and statewide heritage gives far more to the Commonwealth than merely blue ribbon competition, concerts, special exhibits and carnival rides. It is a showcase for Kentucky’s finest products, companies, entertainment, and, most importantly, people. It continues to garner the financial strength and public support it needs to stand out as one of the most anticipated summer attractions in the commonwealth as it generated approximately $16.5 million in economic impact. These assets make it possible for the fair to feature new competitions and entertainment while nurturing its core concepts, including education, agriculture and music showcase.

The Collis P. Huntington Railroad Society By Woody Woodrum When your organization is run in the name of the man who built the railroad and the city, it is a big deal. That is exactly what the folks at the Collis P. Huntington Railroad Society want you to know, that said society is a big deal in the city of Huntington. Huntington founded the city holding his name (Collis Potter Huntington) when he ended the western terminus of the C&O Railroad at the new city. Huntington founded and laid out with wide streets and avenue, serving both the railroad and the river traffic. Huntington also was involved with the Central Pacific Railroad uniting the United States nation east-to-west in 1869 when they joined with the Union Pacific Railroad at Promontory Point, Utah. He later was involved with the establishment of the Southern Pacific

Railroad, the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad, and finally the C&O’s Peninsula Subdivision from Richmond to Williamsburg in Virginia as well as the Newport News (Va.) Shipbuilding and Drydock Co, the largest privately owned shipyard in America. He also was involved in the founding of Hampton University in Va. and Tuskegee University in Alabama. Today, C.P.H. Business Office is located at 1323 8th Avenue, Huntington. Included at this location are several small exhibits of railroad memorabilia and a book and video library which is available to all members. The Collis P. Huntington Railroad Historical Society, Inc. invite you to enjoy, participate in, and contribute to the past, present and future of our railroading heritage. The CPH Society also sponsors many trips throughout the year, and this year is the 52nd anniversary of the first train in 1966 to take people on the New River Train in West Virginia, from Huntington to Hinton in southern W.Va. Every fall, people come from all over the country to ride and enjoy the fall colors in the “Grand Canyon of the East.” Although it appeared Amtrak might block private cars running on its lines, including The Cardinal (from Washington, D.C. to Cincinnati, Ohio, through Huntington-Charleston and southern West Virginia. Fortunately, the Mountain State’s senators and representatives worked a deal that will hopefully keep the Huntington train on the rails for this year and years to come. There are train trips with private cars all year, beginning with the trip to “The Big Apple,” New York for June 14-17, leaving from Pittsburgh, Pa., to Washington, D.C. The next trip is from Washington, D.C. to Bosten, Mass., for a July 3-5 trip to celebrate American Independence on July Fourth where the American Revolution began in Boston.

MIDDLEPORT 740-691-5131

For information on all these trips and other adventures, go to www.newrivertrain.com.

There is also model train and car show each year by the CFH Society, usually in April in Ashland, Ky., as del as the Outdoor Museum with real engines, caboose, hand car and many other pieces of equipment used in the heyday of the steam and diesel engine.

Why would you want to belong to the CPH Railroad Historical Society? • Get to know fellow railroad enthusiasts. • Help the Chapter museum as a docent, become the chapter video-librarian, or help keep the museum lawn and equipment in pristine condition. • Enjoy meetings and social activities with persons having similar interests. • Restore equipment to its former elegance. • Hear knowledgable speakers from local hobbyists, to railroad presidents. • Help write local newsletters or rail-related articles. • Be a car host, help in concessions/ souvenirs, or serve dinner on a vintage diner during a rail excursion. • Visit rail yards and shops. • Narrate on Amtrak’s “Cardinal” as the train makes it through the New River Gorge. • Photograph your favorite rail subjects. • Collect various railroad artifacts such as lanterns, switch locks, timetables, date nails, etc. • Experience the thrill of an excursion train ride. • Ride trains on mainlines and little-known short line branches. If you love trains, riding trains, collecting trains, you should be a member of the Collis P. Huntington Railroad Historical Society. Go to the website at

89th Putnam County Homecoming

September 8-9 Winfield, W.Va. www.putnamcountyhomecoming.com 304-586-2122 The Putnam County Homecoming is an annual event held in Putnam County West Virginia. It has been a county festival since 1929 making it one of the oldest celebrated here in the county. The homecoming main festivals are always held on the second Sunday of September. It is believed that it only rains every 75 years on this date — anyway that is what we have been told. Whoever came up with that piece of information must have had some inside track on the weather. The event is special because of the down home family atmosphere, it is a place families reunite with old friends and neighbors visit with neighbors and meet new friends. It is an event that shut down the main road and we watch our children, neighbors, friends, and high school bands from Buffalo, Hurricane, Poca, and Winfield, march in the Grand Parade. There is also the crowning of Miss Putnam County, chosen from one of the four high schools. We select only the best food vendors from the area. The entertainment is always top notch as we always present some of the best talent here in Putnam County. A street dance and a car show are great events, and so are speeches by politicians from locally and statewide.
