Dear Colleagues, As we get close to the half way point of the year, I think it is a good time for us to stop and reflect on our performance so far. Some things that I think we can be proud about as a team: • We are performing ahead of our budget. • We have some great plans in place for our product range. • We have developed an exciting new format which will go into trail in our Zhabei store - based around inspiring our customers and making it easier for them customers to buy. • We have taken time to review the performance of our T stores, see what is working and amend our plans going forward. • We have reduced some of our pricing. • We are controlling our costs better. • We have created a financially viable business. I had an opportunity recently to present these improvements and developments to the Kingfisher Board and on the back of this they have agreed to restart their investment in B&Q China. This is a really positive message for us as once again they are seeing our business as an opportunity rather than a problem. The second half of the year will see us face an uncertain market, there is a lot of speculation about what will happen in the housing market and the recent changes in legislation seem to have already had an impact. It is at times like this that we have to make a choice; follow the trends in the market or make our own luck by increasing our market share. Even if the market reduces dramatically, it is still huge and so don't let this distract you, there are still many opportunities for us to capture sales. So what sort of things will we do? • Further improve our prices, the Commercial team have a plan to achieve this and are working to make this happen. • Improve our marketing both inside and outside of the stores. • Better in store execution, the differences I see between our best and our worst stores is too big. • Improve our service. • Remove complexity from our business. Great retailers do things very simply. • We have to ensure that every single one of us does our job to the best of our ability and with full commitment. Which leads me nicely to my final point. In the first half of the year, nearly 250 people received a promotion in B&Q China. The opportunity is there for us all as a business and as individuals, we just have to work hard to achieve it.
