Session One Session one of 2018 was a fantastic, fun-filled two weeks up at the Awosting Speedway, aka the best place on camp (don’t listen to Ropes or Waterfront). Many new and old faces showed up at the top pf the hill, and during the immense heatwave that seemingly came out of nowhere, Go Karts still had full sign ups every day. Campers like Yang Xu (Evan), Daniel Gordon, and Tristan “T-Man” Adams brought great energy, and made waiting for your turn to drive an experience full of smiles and laughs. Time Trials were also in full swing, with campers racing against the clock for not only bragging rights, but for part of their full merits! Charlie Wich, the session one medal winner, claimed the fastest lap time among session one campers with a very quick 22.7 seconds! I am so happy with how session one of 2018 turned out! Bring on session two and go Seminoles!!
Session Two Session two of 2018 was an awesome (as usual) two weeks up at the Awosting Speedway. Many new and old campers came to the top of the hill to show off their driving skills. Campers such as Andrew Shelton, Andy Liu, and Patrick Farley signed up regularly, always wanting one more go around the track. Maintenance electives were also filled with campers wanting to 42
learn more about the mechanics of the karts, as well as achieving their full merits. Andy Liu and Tristan Adams were very helpful, and made changing the tires a lot easier and more enjoyable. It was a pleasure to teach curious campers about how the karts work, and I am quite happy with how session two of 2018 went. Can’t wait for session three! Go Seminoles!!
Session Three Session three of 2018 was a thrilling two weeks up at the Awosting Speedway, despite the unusual amount of liquid sunshine we received. When it was dry, go karts was as usual the most fun activity on camp. Campers like Tristan A, Rowan O, and Max B were regular attendants at the track, rain or shine. Many campers received their half merits, earning points for their tribes, with a select few campers completing the requirements for a full merit. Tristan Adams, my LIT for sessions 1-3, earned the go kart medal running away. So proud of you Tristan! In summary, I am pleased with how session three turned out, despite the weather. Only one more to go! Bring on session four! Go Seminoles!!
Session four Session 4 at the Awosting Speedway was as always, very busy. Campers old and new trekked to the top of the hill to experience the thrill of karting all session long. Being the last session, Pablo, Fish, and I had to choose a trophy winner in addition to the medal winner. The medal went to Drew Logsdon, ironically enough, my medal winner from a year past. The trophy went to Tristan Adams, and deservingly so. The runner up for the trophy was Charlie Wich, who held the fastest lap time for the summer of 2018. To all who came to Go Karts, thank you for making it a great summer filled with laughs and smiles (and burnt rubber). Catch you guys on the flip side! Over and out.
Canoeing Sam Jepson
Session One Session one down at the Canoeing Headquarters of Ebner Camps was an intense one with a lot of the boys turning up and proving themselves as legends on the water. There was fierce competition throughout the session, no more so than during the Tribal War Canoe at the end of the swim meet. Once again, canoeing proved to be the most important part of camp as the entire day came down to that one race. The Seminoles came out the victors but they were not easy winner as the other tribes paddled with great bravery and pride. Colin Adams yet again showed his superior canoeing skills to everyone on camp except the Jepson brothers and won the medal in a land slide. Colin received over 100,000 votes out of only 120,000 people in the election for the medal, and that alone is outstanding. Thank you to everyone who made this session amazing, see you all in session 2.
Session Two Session 2 down at Canoeing was again an amazing one. With the camp being much more full, it meant that the competition for the highly regarded Canoeing medal was just greater. When the seniors left for Cape Cod it opened the door for other campers to shine and begin their campaign for the medal. Many people led great campaigns but the overwhelming winner of the votes was Casey Schimel. Casey was a great LIT during session 2 and showed a lot of enthusiasm and skill in Canoeing. Thanks to my other LITs who helped me out throughout the session and a big shout of to Joe Kelly who took the reins on many lessons when I was unavailable to teach due to all of my other incredibly important responsibilities around camp. Thanks to all of the campers who signed up for the best activity on camp. Bring on Session 3 and WAR CANOE!!!!
Session Three Session 3 is the big one down at canoeing and this year it started straight away. War Canoe tryouts began on the first morning and the team was decided later that day. 13 brave souls were about to commit the next 12 days of their lives to the War Canoe team. Each and every single one of them showed over those days that they had the desire that was necessary to win on Watersports Day. Once the weekend came around, the team was pretty much race ready, practicing the course time and time again trying to perfect each and every part. Before we knew it, Thursday was here and it was race day, that’s when the nerves and adrenaline really start to kick in. The boys woke the camp up by going into each cabin and singing Awosting songs to get the camp hyped up for the afternoon. One final morning practice took place to iron the last few creases before the race. Then soon enough the girls were at camp and Watersports Day was underway. Another great entrance took place thanks to Ben Jepson and Tom Perilli turning Lisas pontoon into a Hawaiian ship. With smoke bombs trailing us in, we lead the camp in the “I Believe” chant. After a very strange series of events and a shortened swim meet due to poor weather. We were up in the Moby Dick and the race was just minutes away. I gave the boys one final talk to try and give them as much of a boost as I could but I’m sure my words were not needed because the focus and determination was clear in all 13 of their faces. Next thing we knew the boats were ready and Ben was calling the start of the race. Contrary to how the races usually begin, the boys started off just as quickly as the girls and stayed ahead the entire race, only losing a little bit of ground on the way back as Chinqueka gave their all but this team of legends wouldn’t allow a dramatic comeback to happen and kicked into top gear and paddled that crucial 10% harder to fly through the docks and break the stairs for the first time since 2009. Then it was pure scene as the entirety of Awosting lost their mind in celebration after a comfortable and resounding victory. I would like to thank each and every member of the team this year for giving me nothing to effort and hard work from day one, never asking for a break or complaining that we were working too hard. It was an absolute honor to be a part of this amazing team and share those celebrations with those lads. A huge thanks to Joe Kelly for his efforts in my absence, and all of Awosting for their fantastic support. I wish all of the boys and great coming year and all of the best in the future, and I know if they all put as much effort and commitment into their futures as they did War Canoe, they will all be phenomenally successful men. Once again thank you and peace out.
Session Four Session Four down at Canoeing is always an quiet one after the chaos of War Canoe and this year was no different. The seniors left early in the session for senior trip so which made the morning periods slower than usual, but this allowed the boys who stayed to get some phenomenal small class teaching and truly work on their skills and make them perfect. The afternoons were mostly taken up by boys going out for a nice chilled out paddle with their friends, except for one lad who took the bull by the horns and push himself to an absolute extreme and make himself an Canoeing expert. That legend was AJ Spina, the man who came closest to beating me in a one on one canoe race to the other side of the lake and back. Thanks to everyone for an amazing summer and some great memories.
