Introducing Yateley The parish of Yateley is in the district of Hart in the north-east of the county of Hampshire. The parish includes Yateley itself and the areas of Darby Green, Frogmore and part of Blackwater, as well as most of Blackbushe Airport.

It has a population of around 20,500. The townscape consists of a mixture of old and new developments and during the last 30 years has expanded dramatically, although it has managed to retain much of its former rural character. In fact, although a town in name - it acquired its town council status in January 1975 - it still has the feel of a large village. Or rather a number of villages, each one with its own village green. Yateley Green and Frogmore Green are, respectively, the centre of their parts of the community with recreation facilities to match. Church End Green, located between the two, is a more traditional centre with the historic church of St Peter’s nearby. Darby Green is also an important recreation area. There are a number of substantial, architecturally significant houses in the town, mostly hidden behind trees

and hedges. The area retains internationally important heathland. The town sits in the valley of the Blackwater River which at this point is dotted with lakes formed from gravel extraction, some of which now constitute important fisheries. Although the town has little land left for development (notwithstanding its rural feel) recent developments include the Hampshire Lakes retirement village and housing next to Swan Lake. Next to this housing, a new park and the first allotment site for many years were created. Yateley is situated in Hart District which, in 2011, was named as the UK’s most desirable place to live and Yateley was mentioned in a BBC news article as one of those towns within the district. In 2014, it was rated as one of the most attractive postcode areas to live in England. The town has three GP surgeries, a library, 11 schools, playgrounds and open spaces for recreation, allotments, community halls available for hire, two tennis courts and many other local amenities. Town Mayor

The Council was originally formed as Yateley Parish Council in1894, becoming Yateley Town Council in 1975. It exists to serve and represent the views of the people of Yateley, Frogmore and Darby Green, providing a channel to express their needs and priorities. It acts as a catalyst for action to improve and enhance the quality of life for those who live, work or visit the town. Our funding comes from the precept, a sum of money collected each year through your council tax and rental income from the hire of halls, sports pitches etc. Yateley has 5 Parish wards, Yateley Green, Tudor and Vigo, Yateley Village, Frogmore and Darby Green and Potley Hill. The town is represented by 13 councillors and regular public meetings are held throughout the year. The councillors' details and a calendar of meetings, usually held in The Tythings, can be found on our website.

Amenities

We have a number of halls and meeting rooms for hire: The Tythings on Yateley Green, The Monteagle Community Centre by Waitrose and The Darby Green Centre. Details of the halls and how to book are on the Council website. Most of the open spaces and playgrounds in Yateley are managed by the Town Council. A full list can be found on the website. Yateley Green tennis courts are available to hire for tennis, basketball and five-a-side football. Courts can be booked at the Town Council Offices or by phoning 01252 872198. Season tickets are available for tennis. Our allotment site is located on the northern end of Swan Lake Park, an informal wildlife site centred around a series of lakes adjacent to the Blackwater River. It is accessed from Darby Green Lane. There are 44 plots which are allocated to residents of the

Parish. Our waiting list is open to residents of the Parish only. To join the list please email office@ yateley-tc.gov.uk with your name and address. Heathlands Cemetery is owned and maintained by Yateley Town Council for the residents of Yateley. It was opened in 1957 and can be found in a tranquil setting adjoining Yateley Common. The cemetery lawn is split into religious sections for Roman Catholic, Church of England and Other Denominations. It also has a Garden of Remembrance for the internment of ashes and a baby section. Burial records dating back to the first burial in 1957 are kept at the Council Offices. Access to the cemetery is via two pedestrian kissing gates (one of which is wheelchair accessible) open at all times. The main gates are open on Wednesday only, between 10.00am and 3pm for vehicular 7 access.

Unique heathland landscape Heathlands were created by grazing Yateley Common Country Park

Owned and Managed by Hampshire County Council, Yateley Common Country Park is made up of 476 acres of varied grasslands, ponds, woodlands and, most importantly, heathland. Yateley Common is protected by its status as part of the Thames Basin Heaths Special Protection Area (SPA), and as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) designated for its unique range of specialised heathland wildlife. Heathlands may look wild and untouched but have been created and or maintained at least in part by man’s activities, such as grazing. If left unmanaged they would become entirely wooded with the loss of the important heathland habitat and associated species. There are some misconceptions about common land, one being that it has always been owned by the people; in reality, it belonged to landlords, but was often left unused due to its poor quality soils. ‘Commoner rights’ were given to tenants living around the common and some local households retain such rights to this day. Until the Countryside and Rights of Way Act (CRoW), most commons were not actually open to access by the public. Access is now granted to all commons under this act, but with this right of access come restrictions.

To help conserve ground nesting birds one such restriction is that walkers are asked to keep dogs on leads during the bird breeding season, 1st March – 31st July. This restriction does not apply, however, to bridleways. In order to conserve the birds please ensure your dogs stick to the bridleways between these dates. This is because the low-lying, warm and dry environment on Yateley Common, characterised by heathers, gorse and scattered trees, provides an ideal habitat for a variety of wildlife including three rare and threatened birds: the Dartford warbler, woodlark and nightjar, all of which are on the European list of endangered species. These species nest on or near the ground and are therefore susceptible to disturbance. Horseriders and groups of walkers can also help conserve these rare birds by sticking to main tracks

and bridleways. Adders, lizards, grass-snakes, slow worms and a variety of insects are also to be found, including a variety of dragonflies, damselflies and butterflies. Other bird species found on the common include Stonechats, Tree Pipits, Hobby and Kestrel. Red Kites are now also making the odd appearance in the sky. The common offers a range of recreational activities, including: angling in Wyndham’s Pool, cycling and horse riding on the large network of bridleways, dog walking or just enjoying the heathland landscape. A town rich in history Yateley's land was used for fattening cattle and growing barley for making beer. The poorer people were generally agricultural labourers or servants at the houses of the better off.

St Peter's Church

Yateley had a stone church in Saxon times, and became one of the largest settlements in north-east Hampshire in the Middle Ages. The Parish then included the huge but sparsely populated areas of Hawley and Cove. It was part of the Manor and Hundred of Crondall, which provided financial support for the monks of the Old Monastery at Winchester. During the Reformation, the Manor was given to the Dean and Chapter of Winchester Cathedral, and, apart for a short period during the Civil War, remained in the hands of the church until the manorial system ended in the twentieth century. During the Middle Ages, Yateley’s settlement pattern, with its clear distinction between

the cultivated land and the uncultivated heathland common land, reached its present form. Smaller houses were concentrated round the three Greens that are now Conservation Areas, with larger farmhouses scattered across the parish. Yateley people held their farmland from the Lord of the Manor, and could exercise various common rights and graze animals on the common. Some Yateley people still have these rights today. By the seventeenth century Hall Place, Frogmore Park, Hilfield, Yateley Lodge, Yateley Hall, and Monteagle House were residences suitable for gentlemen. Hall Place (now Yateley Manor school) was home to Sir Richard Ryves, an early Director of the East India Company. Such men, who were often lawyers or had business interests in the East India Company,

commuted to London using the Exeter Road (now the A30), which crosses Yateley Common. At 34 miles, the journey to London was half a day’s horse ride - conveniently close, but far enough away to avoid the recurrent plague, which killed about a third of Yateley people in 1349. Travel could be dangerous. Bagshot Heath became notorious for highwaymen. At one period, travellers from the west country passed through Yateley village and on into Sandhurst to take a safer more northerly route to London. Below these wealthy families with their London connections were people whose business interests were more local, such as the farmers and tradesmen such as maltsters and brewers, whose families tended to marry among each other to strengthen business ties. By this time Yateley land was used for fattening cattle and growing barley for making beer. The poorer people were generally agricultural labourers, or were servants at the houses of the better off. At the bottom of the social scale were the itinerants, who squatted in tents on Yateley Common. Yateley continued in much the same state until the nineteenth century, when it began to change more rapidly. The Royal Military College came to Sandhurst in 1812. The College staff and retired army officers began to settle in Yateley, starting off its “suburbanisation”. In the nineteenth century

new development was mainly in Frogmore and Darby Green, nearest to Camberley and to Blackwater railway station. Development spread westwards across Yateley in the period up to the Second World War with large houses on spacious plots for upper middle class incomers, many of whom had entries in ‘Who’s Who’, the local people providing them with services they needed. This development was scattered, with pleasant open fields between the houses. Yateley was a place for people in comfortable circumstances. War left a legacy of derelict land that invited redevelopment. The new sewerage system now had surplus capacity, making Yateley an obvious place to build houses. Yateley lay just beyond the London Green Belt -

development pressure was intense. Yateley was changing fast, and its middle class residents saw what was happening and many sold their houses for development. During the 1960s and 1970s Yateley expanded faster than most designated ‘New Towns’

such as Bracknell. Unlike the New Towns, some areas of Yateley expanded without proper planning or infrastructure. Only when the available land became exhausted, did the rate of development slow down.

From wartime to fly-time

It was officially opened in November 1942. Squadrons flying Tomahawks, Venturas, Mustangs and Spitfires were located here. The A30 had to be closed from dusk to dawn as a security measure, and was also closed whenever the north-south runway was in use. It was designated a Bomber Command diversion airfield and received many damaged aircraft and weather diversions throughout the war period. A fog

dispersal system called FIDO was installed to help aircraft in poor weather conditions. It consisted of a piped burner system each side of the main runway down which petrol was pumped. When ignited, the flames heated the fog sufficiently to disperse it. Few other wartime airfields had such a system. The airfield was active during and following “D” Day in 1944. The name was changed from RAF Hartfordbridge to RAF Blackbushe that year (since there was a Hartford Bridge in Norfolk and mail was going astray). After the war, the airfield was briefly closed and then reopened to become one of the busiest charter airfields in the country at the time. It closed again in 1960 when a US Navy detachment, which had operated there, left and independent airlines moved to the newly constructed Gatwick.

Later it became home to a collection of restored military aircraft. British Car Auctions bought it in 1985 both for holding auctions and operating their own fleet of company aircraft and helicopters. It is now owned by Blackbushe Airport Limited and accommodates two flying training schools and private aircraft.

In 1941, plans were drawn up for a military airfield to be constructed at Hartford Bridge Flats to the south west of Yateley. The site was an almost perfectly flat part of Yateley Common and on relatively high ground as well as having good main line rail connections and the nearby A30 trunkroad.

This has become one of the highlights of the Yateley social calendar, bringing together the local community in a real family and friends-oriented event. All profits go towards supporting the sports facilities being developed around Yateley United Football Club. The ever popular annual May Fayre is held on May Day on Yateley Green and attracts thousands of visitors from all over the area. Each year there are many varied arena events. In recent years we have seen dog shows, marching bands and motor bike stunt teams. There’s a car boot sale and numerous charity stalls, activities, food and drink outlets and children’s fairground rides. Entrance is free. Limited parking is available on the Firgrove Road side of the green - a donation to park is always appreciated. Yateley & District Gardening Society The Yateley & District Gardening Society provides local gardeners with an opportunity to get together and learn more about growing plants. It welcomes new members from beginners to experienced green fingers. The society holds its annual Autumn Flower and Produce Show at St

Peter’s Church. It also offers classes in growing flowers, fruit, vegetables, pot plants, making cakes, preserves and handicrafts. There is also a children’s section. Even if you do not exhibit, why not come along with your friends to view the exhibits and the Flower Festival in the church. Have a cup of tea and a bun! Remembrance Day parade Yateley’s Remembrance Service takes place at St Swithun’s Roman Catholic Church.

Members of the public are invited to attend a church service before a marching parade leads residents to the war memorial in Reading Road. Groups parading usually include the Scouts, Guides, Boys Brigade, Army and Air Cadets, The Royal British Legion and The British Red Cross and school-children. 10k Series

The Yateley Road Race Series consists of three 10k road races, held every year on the first Wednesday of June, July and August at 7:30 pm from Yateley Centre.

Where the lakes came from Yateley is characterised by its lakes as much as its heathland There are natural gravel and sand deposits along most of the River Blackwater River and this led to extensive extraction especially after the Second World War in order to meet demand for roads and houses. This is the origin of the numerous lakes along the river, at their most prolific at this point in between Yateley and Sandhurst.

Facilities

Most of the extraction ceased in the 1960s and the lakes have since been turned to leisure use, both water sports and fishing. The fisheries at Yateley are among the most famous in the country. This maze of lakes, owned by a variety of organisations, has fish stocks of carp, catfish, bream, tench, crucian carp and eels. In the Blackwater River itself there are chub, barbel, carp, roach, perch, dace and trout. The Blackwater Valley as a whole, lying along the borders of Hampshire, Berkshire and Surrey, is maintained as an open space from the river source, near Aldershot in the south,

Yateley in the Great War New book to focus on the impact on Yateley families and village life

The Yateley Society has continued to research the effects of the War on Yateley since its Exhibition covering the first year of the War in 2014. This was displayed in turn in Yateley Library, Frogmore College, the Green opposite the War Memorial on Remembrance Sunday and in Yateley Manor School. It is now on long term loan to the Heritage Gallery in Camberley. The information from the exhibition can be found on the Society's website: www.yateleysociety. org.uk In 2015 the Society was commissioned by Pen & Sword Books to write a book about Yateley in the Great War, as part of their series featuring the stories of towns and villages across the UK in the conflict of 1914 - 1918. Pen & Sword are noted and respected as publishers of a wide range of books on warfare and military subjects as well as a variety of titles about local and family history research. At the beginning of 2018 the Culture Secretary drew attention to this being the centenary of the final year of the Great War and of the Armistice which concluded "the war to end all wars" in November 1918. She reported that there would be national and local events across the country marking these anniversaries.

Founded in 1970 Yateley Hockey Club has a rich history of representation and success as well as contributions to the local community. With over 300 active playing members across 10 senior teams and a thriving junior section, providing hockey and coaching for all ages and abilities as well as an active social calendar through-out the year.
