ARTHUR BEAU PALMER - GUEST LECTURER This voyage will be hosted by guest lecturer Arthur Beau Palmer. One of the foremost experts in Papuan and Torres Strait art, Arthur began collecting in the 1960’s. During his long career as an anthropologist, ethnographer, bush pilot, and government advisor,
Arthur Beau Palmer travelled widely in the Spice Islands, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, and Northern Australia. He now owns a well-established gallery in Brisbane specializing in high-end oceanic and tribal art.
ABOUT YOUR VOYAGE This inaugural themed expedition explores ‘material culture’, which is the relationship between the people and their craft. We uncover the history of traditional art, the influence of belief and societal needs, and study the contemporary works that we encounter along the way. Enjoy the unique opportunity to purchase your own pieces with the assistance of our expert guest lecturer, Arthur Beau Palmer, and observe the styles, techniques, and materials changng as we journey from the Maluku Islands through West Papua and into Papua New Guinea.
Enjoy experiences that bring our itinerary to life. To begin our voyage, we visit the dramatic Fort Belgica in Banda Neira. With a rich history and surrounded by the stunning landscape of the Maluku Islands, the Fort will be our venue for a special Bandanese dinner under the stars. As we travel into Papua New Guinea, you will see world-famous Sepik River carvings in Madang. Here we will host a private onboard art exhibition, wth local artists invited to participate and share their stories.

Coral Adventurer
Coral Adventurer is designed to operate voyages to remote areas in comfort and with minimal environmental impact. At 93 metres long, she is small enough to remain intimate while featuring many advanced capabilities. These include diesel-electric propulsion to maximise energy efficiency and active stabilisers to dampen sea motion. With a 4.3 metre draft and 360o azipod thrusters, she can squeeze into shallow bays and inlets that larger ships cannot. Coral Adventurer carries 120 guests in 60 all outside, all ensuite staterooms. Flying the Australian flag and home-ported in Cairns, she features plenty of open public space, expedition lounge, panoramic bar, and our trademark open bridge, along with some new innovations. > Dual Xplorer tenders, each carrying 60 guests in comfort > 32 staterooms with private balconies, including two suites of 56 sqm > Research room for ongoing environmental and art programmes > Communal wine-tasting table and professional wine cellar > Passenger elevator and gymnasium

the expedition experience
For over 30 years, Coral Expeditions has had one purpose – taking small groups of like-minded explorers to the most remote parts of the world with expert guidance and warm Australian hospitality. Our small ship expeditions get you closer to ancient cultures and remote destinations. With a strong focus on visiting places not often touched by tourists, our shore excursions promote local interaction and learning. The small group size ensures that our shore excursions are comfortable and enjoyable, but also have minimal impact on the communities and environments that we visit. Most activities are suitable for all fitness levels; when a higher than normal level of fitness is required for an excursion, your Expedition Leader will advise you accordingly. However, to fully enjoy these expeditions, a moderate level of fitness and mobility is advised. You can expect one or two shore or in-sea activities
OUR EXPEDITION TEAM Expedition Leaders and Guest Lecturers who are experts in the region accompany every voyage. They provide specialist commentary on the culture, geology, conservation, and history of the area and introduce you to its unique plants and wildlife. On all our New Guinea voyages, our Expedition Team will accompany you on shore excursions and provide expert commentary. They will host onboard presentations and briefings,
Tourism doesn’t have to come at a cost to the environment. As one of the pioneers of environmentally sensitive cruising on the Great Barrier Reef, we remain firmly committed to promoting sustainability and minimising environmental impact while sharing our incredible destinations with travellers from around the world. Eco Certification is the assurance that our cruises are backed by a strong, managed committment to sustainable practices.
