The Ponant difference A GLOBAL PRESENCE WITH A FRENCH HERITAGE A tradition of excellence with over 30 years’ experience, that stems from a love of the sea, a dream of adventure and a taste of sophistication. Expeditions are blended with French-inspired luxury – our French Touch, which guests can enjoy in the service and gastronomy, decor, and design. ONE OF THE WORLD’S YOUNGEST, MOST MODERN FLEET With no more than 240 guests on board, our luxury small ships have all been expedition purpose built within the last 10 years, 50% of them built since 2018. Building and operating innovative small capacity ships offers a human dimension and a unique atmosphere, akin to sailing on your own private yacht. … and the PONANT fleet is just as comfortable in luxury yacht cruising mode for cultural discoveries… see pages 76-77. AN ESCAPE FROM CIVILISATION Whether in Antarctica or in the Seychelles, the size of our ships and their shallow draught mean guests can come as close as possible to hard-to-access areas, offering privileged discoveries in pristine environments, providing the manoeuvrability and flexibility needed in those remote regions. A PASSIONATE EXPEDITION TEAM Specialists in extreme regions, our expedition teams are passionate, knowledgeable, and committed. As recognised professionals, they always make scouting missions in the field whilst crafting your itinerary to provide rich cultural, scientific, or historical insight during shore excursions and on board. MAXIMISED EXPERIENCES Less guests on board means more time in each destination. Our expedition ships have an easily accessible, stable marina platform enabling safe and efficient deployment of our fleet of Zodiacs® to ensure you are disembarked swiftly and safely, with maximised discoveries every day. A CONSCIOUS AND RESPONSIBLE APPROACH Our ‘zero footprint’ philosophy means all our itineraries are subject to social and environmental studies. Our landing protocols respect and are inclusive of the local communities we visit, and our fleet exceeds the highest global maritime standards. HEALTH AND SAFETY ASSURANCE All our ships are equipped with a hospital, with a doctor and nurse on call 24/7 providing passenger-specific comprehensive health protocols.

12 | Sustainability & Responsible Tourism

We better protect what we know

A respectful approach for purposeful expeditions

Daily, PONANT is committed to being a leader in environment protection and sustainable tourism. As passionate sailors and lovers of nature, it truly is our responsibility. From building our fleet and designing our itineraries to shore visits and educating our guests, protecting our beloved destinations is our main ambition. And making you an advocate for their protection. Because we protect better what we know. More information at au.ponant.com/sustainable-development A CONSCIOUS APPROACH AT THE CORE OF OUR FLEET

A ZERO-IMPACT DISEMBARKATION PROTOCOL

Building and operating smaller vessels means we generate less waste and leave a much smaller footprint wherever we go.

As a leader in sustainable tourism and environment protection, we have developed a strict disembarkation protocol applicable to every single site we land foot on. From the concept phase to our actual visits, our dedicated team is assigned to this approach with only one ambition: have zero impact on the places we visit when disembarking, be respectful of their ecosystems and local communities, and leave the place exactly as it was when we arrived.

All our ships have been awarded the ‘Clean Ship’ label, the highest by Bureau Veritas classification. They are all fitted with electric propulsion engines powered by generators allowing for the lowest levels of noise and vibration for minimised impact on the marine ecosystem and optimised comfort onboard. Our newest vessel, Le Commandant Charcot, is the world’s first hybrid electric luxury polar exploration vessel to run on LNG (Liquified Natural Gas), the ultimate embodiment of our commitment to sustainable tourism. See more on pages 68-69. WORKING WITH LOCAL COMMUNITIES Culture and traditions of local communities are an invaluable aspect of the destinations we visit. From scouting for new itineraries to leading shore excursions for our guests during an expedition, local populations and communities are at the centre of our efforts, and we work closely with them to ensure they contribute to your experience by showing and sharing the aspects of their culture and lives. We also make it a priority to encourage traditional cultural crafts, and source services and products amongst those communities.

THE PONANT FOUNDATION Created in 2019, the PONANT Foundation’s aim is to protect the oceans and polar regions and encourage exchanges between peoples. Its goal is to support projects focusing on research, awareness and conservation of the destinations we visit. From whale scientific research and protection in Antarctica to beach cleaning projects in the Seychelles, the Foundation supports various projects around the world that contribute to a more sustainable future. A luxury expedition by PONANT: the promise of unique adventures blended with refined luxury...

DESIGN & ATMOSPHERE

THE FRENCH TOUCH

Designed by French architect-designer Jean Philippe Nuel, 95% of our staterooms and suites feature their own private balcony, and reflect our vision of relaxed elegance at sea, and intimate, luxurious hospitality.

With PONANT, the French ‘art de vivre’ blends throughout your experience on board, as we work with some of the most prestigious French brands who, like PONANT, share our constant pursuit of excellence: pamper yourself with Hermès bathroom amenities in your stateroom, enjoy Ladurée macarons for afternoon tea, Pierre Frey linen and fabrics, savour Veuve Clicquot champagne, indulge in Lenôtre pastries and bread, or treat yourself to a spa treatment by Sothy’s Paris.

Our ships’ various public areas and lounges are the perfect place for a moment of peace and quiet. Meet over a drink at the main lounge, enjoy the panoramic lounge with its piano-bar and admire what lies ahead on the horizon, or head for the outdoor bar for a cocktail by the pool and sun deck. Sit comfortably in our theatre and enjoy lectures by our expedition guides or evening concerts, grab a book at the library or relax in your stateroom with a film or documentary from our Video on Demand service. GASTRONOMY EXPERIENCE Explore the delights of world-renowned cuisine and embark on a journey to the land of flavours. Our chefs and their teams interpret and share with you their passion for France’s culinary heritage, enriched by the produce and traditions of your visited destination. To provide you with the best experience possible, PONANT has joined forces with world-renowned French chef Alain Ducasse’s consulting company Ducasse Conseil to ensure the highest standards, from the conception of the culinary concept to the training of our onboard chefs. Our small luxury ships feature two different restaurant concepts. In the Gastronomic Restaurant, à la carte meals are served to your table at breakfast, lunch and dinner from a selection of international and French-inspired cuisine in the finest French hospitality tradition. At the Grill Restaurant, enjoy healthy and delicious options for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Today, the locations where they settled are home to several species of whales, dolphins and porpoises that now live there in the greatest serenity. To the east of the archipelago, between the coasts of the Nordaust Svalbard Nature Reserve and the Hinlopen Strait, lies a veritable polar desert, home to a rich ecosystem where sea birds, walruses, bears and polar foxes come to feed. These iconic species can also be found in the Søraust-Svalbard Nature Reserve, Norway's largest protected area.

66 | Going further with Le Commandant Charcot

Certain journeys transcend us. Through them, we are no longer just passengers but enlightened travellers. With Le Commandant Charcot, step into the history of polar exploration and push the boundaries of the known world. With 30 years of experience navigating in extreme regions, we now invite you to experience journeys never before offered on board the world's first hybrid-electric LNG powered luxury polar exploration vessel. The only one of its kind in the world, Le Commandant Charcot features many innovations, overcoming immense technological challenges while providing luxurious comfort.

Discover more at au.ponant.com | 67

Sailing through the ice: a technological feat As the first luxury expedition ship capable of sailing to the highest southern and northern latitudes, Le Commandant Charcot is the only passenger ship with a PC2 class hull. This enables it to venture into channels that are inaccessible to others and, if necessary, to maintain a pace of up to 2 knots in 2.5 metres of old ice. With the help of the French company Adrena, we have developed routing software that is the only one of its kind in the world. This navigation aid is invaluable when it comes to taking the most energy-efficient and safest routes.

Hybrid propulsion never-before seen in a polar environment Equipped with hybrid electric power generation, Le Commandant Charcot has several propulsion modes, including: • Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), which reduces the emission of carbon (-25%), nitrogen oxide (-85%) and fine particles (-95%). It is the only ship in the world able to rely on a two-month supply of LNG. • The largest battery bank a cruise ship has ever been fitted with, optimising its energy consumption and giving it over an hour of battery life per day that is completely silent and emission-free.

Innovation at the service of safety

Supporting the scientific community

Le Commandant Charcot has the most powerful azipods (360° propulsion units) in the world, enabling it to go forward or backward. This means the ship has a power reserve which guarantees both safety and exceptional manoeuvring capabilities amongst the ice. The Polar Code requires us to be self-sufficient in ice for five days if necessary. Therefore we have developed our own emergency equipment (survival kits, food, polar suits and shelters, etc.), which is a first in the market.

Le Commandant Charcot is the only French polar class PC2 ship. We have equipped it with polar research laboratories to provide unprecedented support for academic research by accommodating scientists on board.

68 | Going further with Le Commandant Charcot

Travellers will be able to participate in experiments (sampling of weather data, ice, water, etc.) that will help advance international research in furthering our knowledge of the poles.

Brand new spaces on board Le Commandant Charcot has spaces that have never been seen before in the PONANT fleet, such as:

a giant firepit on deck 9, so you can enjoy the polar landscapes in complete comfort;

the Blue Lagoon, an outdoor heated lagoon with a temperature that ranges from 27 to 37°C using recycled energy from the ship;

• •

a sunroom with large external-facing windows;

a Snow Room – a fun and invigorating snow bath you can try out after leaving the sauna;

a meeting room for briefings before departing on expeditions;

an uninterrupted outdoor promenade deck. This means you can walk around the entire ship and get to the bow, unlike most passenger ships.

a heated indoor swimming pool with a superb skylight thanks to its large glass roof;

These spaces were designed by two world-renowned French architectural firms: the Studio Jean-Philippe Nuel and Wilmotte & Associés, whose design brief was to create a real connection with the surrounding landscapes.

Exceptional suites and staterooms On board, 135 suites and staterooms range from 20 to 115 m2 in size, providing warm, understated settings that look out onto the polar environments you'll explore with us. Each has a private balcony or terrace. Le Commandant Charcot has unique suites that none of the other ships have in the PONANT fleet, such as the Duplex suites: 94 m2 spread over two levels, and 24 m2 of terrace. The Owner's suite is one of a kind and is designed as a private apartment of 115 m2 that opens onto 180 m2 of terrace with a jacuzzi.

Haute cuisine in extreme environments In both the far north and the lower latitudes of Antarctica, enjoy the most delicate of dishes on your table. Each day, enjoy a different, varied menu at the gourmet restaurant or at the Blue Lagoon restaurant with its outdoor terrace.
