MANAGER'S MESSAGE By Rob Ciapanna Thank you to all the members who contributed to the Employee Holiday Fund. This is a great way to give back to the employees who worked so hard all year to service our members and guests. Your generosity is greatly appreciated and will surely make a difference in their lives this holiday season. We had a great turnout for our Tree Lighting, capped off with a performance by the Hilton Head Shore Notes and a visit from Santa. Be sure to join us on Friday, December 15th for Palmetto Hall’s Member Holiday Cocktail Party with entertainment provided by Lavon Stevens. On Saturday, December 16th, Santa returns for our annual Brunch with Santa. Chef Mick has also put together a very nice 4 course pre-fix menu to ring in 2024 on New Year’s Eve. Reservations for all 3 events can be made on the member portal. A special Thank You to the staff that did such a nice job decorating the Clubhouse for the holidays, especially Kati Schroeder, Debbie Bondarenko, and Noah Hightower. On behalf of the entire staff, we wish all members a safe, healthy, and happy holiday season and a prosperous new year.

TURF TALK by Patrick Hensley What do you do in the winter? I get this question more often than you would think. Some people believe that if the grass isn't growing, we don't have anything to do. On the contrary, winter can be quite busy for us. Many important steps are taken in the winter to prepare the staff and the golf course for a successful season. We still mow greens, although not as frequently as during the season, especially the overseeded ones. Regular maintenance tasks, such as raking bunkers and moving tee markers as needed, continue. Winter tasks include cutting back overgrown brush—there is a ton of that at Palmetto Hall. Tree trimming and removals are also on the agenda, with no shortage of such tasks at Palmetto Hall. Additionally, we focus on equipment repairs and maintenance, as proper equipment maintenance is key to successful operation. Raising and leveling drains, irrigation repairs and additions, and sprucing up our maintenance building are other priorities for us this winter. The maintenance building is in need of some TLC. As you can see, there is no shortage of work to be done. Please feel free to reach out with any questions, and I hope to see you on the course!

PARKER'S POINTERS by Parker Mulford The end of the Year As we close out the 2023 fiscal year, we can reflect on the big “What Ifs?” What if I got that new driver or set of irons? Would I have played better? What if I spent more time on conditioning? Would my stamina improve for a stronger finish to the round? What if I switched ball manufacturers? Could I keep it in play more and hit longer? I spent a round with a great friend and PGA Champions Tour player last week, and as he reflected on 2023, here is what he took away… Keep an eye on the latest equipment…not to spend excessively, but to know what’s available to you and how you may benefit. Manufacturers are always pushing the limits of technology. Stay as fit as reasonably capable. Not just for golf but for life. As we played, he was on the phone with his trainer talking about new strength techniques. He came in third in driving distance at an average of 302.3 yards in 2023. Vary your practice and play where you can grow your game. Switch up where you play to test yourself. Get a different look at the course by playing a different set of tees. As we usher in 2024, change those “What if’s” to “I’m going to be!” Happy Holidays!
