PARKER'S POINTERS

As we close out the 2024 fiscal year, it’s natural to reflect on some big "what-ifs " What if I had bought that new driver or set of irons would I have played better?

What if I spent more time on conditioning would my stamina have improved for a stronger finish to each round? What if I switched ball manufacturers could I have kept it in play more often or hit it longer?

I spent a round with a great friend and PGA Champions Tour player last week, and as he looked ahead to 2025, here’s what he shared:

Stay informed about equipment. Not to spend endlessly, but to understand what’s available and how new technology might benefit you Manufacturers are always pushing the limits of innovation. Prioritize fitness. Not just for golf, but for life. As we played, he was on the phone with his trainer discussing new strength techniques He finished third in driving distance this year, averaging 302.3 yards in 2024. Mix up your practice and play Challenge yourself by varying where you play and occasionally switching tees. A fresh perspective can help you grow your game.

As we usher in 2025, let’s turn those "what-ifs" into "I’m gonna ’s!"

Happy Holidays!

OVERSEEDING

That time of year is upon us again fall, football, and overseed season. This process takes several weeks but is critical for our winter and spring conditions

During the week of 10/28–10/31, we completed seeding on the tees and greens of both golf courses Favorable weather and timely rainfall have accelerated germination this year compared to usual. Ryegrass on tees typically takes 7–10 days to sprout, while poa trivialis (poa triv) takes 10–14 days. The process of seed germination, leaf emergence, and root establishment can take 2–3 weeks, during which the plants are highly susceptible to damage and even death For this reason, we allow the plants time to grow and anchor before starting the mowing process. This initial growth phase can result in “shaggy” surfaces, leading to temporarily challenging playing conditions

We have now begun the mowing process, and conditions are steadily returning to normal. Heights will gradually be reduced to standard playing levels, and the seed will continue to grow and mature, creating excellent playing surfaces At this stage, everything is germinating consistently and looks healthy.

We’re pleased with the progress this fall and hope you are too!

BUTTERNUT SQUASH RISOTTO

FROM THE KITCHEN OF DEREK BENOIT

DECEMBER 2024

INGREDIENTS:

1 Butternut Squash – Peeled seeded

– medium dice

1 Tablespoon Olive Oil

1/2 Yellow Onion – small dice

1 teaspoon Garlic – minced

½ cup White Wine (if you have an open bottle This is optional)

1.5 cups of Arborio Rice

5.5 cups of Chicken Broth or vegetable broth

1 teaspoon Minced Thyme

1 teaspoon Minced Rosemary

Salt & Pepper to taste

1/2 cup of Parmesan Cheese

¼ pound of Butter - Cubed

DIRECTIONS:

Bring chicken stock to a simmer In a separate pot, sauté onions in olive oil until transparent Add diced butternut squash and cook until tender Lightly season the vegetables with salt and pepper while cooking Add minced garlic and sauté for 1 minute Add arborio rice and cook until lightly toasted. Add white wine and enough hot chicken stock to cover the rice. Stir frequently, and as the rice absorbs the liquid, continue to add stock just to cover the rice. The stirring of the rice and adding of the stock will release the starch and create a creamy texture Taste test the arborio rice to ensure it is fully cooked More stock or water may be needed if the rice is not completely cooked To finish, fold in chopped herbs, parmesan cheese, and butter, and season with salt and pepper to your liking

Serving Suggestion:

This time of year, I enjoy cooking with fall vegetables such as butternut squash. Risotto can be enjoyed on its own as a meal or as a great accompaniment to fish or chicken
