Falling poems

Goldi

the baboon & the Bear family by Stef Cupido − Written during residence at the first LitNet and the Jakes Gerwel Foundation’s Kommadagga-slypskool in Somerset-East.

T

he Bear family was celebrating Anna’s birthday. They had breakfast and decided to keep the birthday cake for dinner. Anna blew out her seven candles in one go. “See, you’re a big girl now,” Mrs Bear said. Anna smiled proudly and looked at her mother and then her father. With loving eyes they stared back at her. Her father tapped on his Polo wristwatch and said, “on that note, I think it’s about time we leave if we want to catch the movie in time”. As a birthday treat they were going to the movies to watch Anna’s favourite movie, Jack the Giant. When they walked out the door, the Uber was already waiting for them. The Uber-driver greeted with a nod when they climbed into the back seat and off they went. In their haste, they forgot to lock the kitchen door at the side of the house. The feint peeped through the window, tap-tap tapped on it, and then the South East wind caused the door to open a bit. The opportunity was there, inside she couldn’t believe her luck when she heard and saw no one. It was dark but having good eye sight, this was not a problem for her. She went to the room that the family shared, rummaged through their things on the counter top, but found nothing to eat.

She couldn’t believe her luck when she heard and saw no one inside.” When she finally spotted the cake on the little table, covered with a dishcloth, no time was wasted destroying it. The kitchen was a mess! Mr. Bear forgot his wallet to pay for the cinema and luckily the Uber-driver was nice enough to drive back, he gets paid of course, but as Mr. Bear entered the house, already irritated that the door was unlocked, he ‘fumed’ when he saw the creature, staring at him as if he was disturbing a private moment. In his anger Mr. Bear grabbed the first thing he saw, and so reached for the dishcloth the cake was under. She managed to escape through the door and ran into the street, catching the attention of the community. “Dis Goldi! Da gaat sy!” someone screamed as they chased her between the dwellings of Khayalitsa. HT

Heritage focus − Richtersveld − Northern Cape

Richtersveld

ichtersveld Cultural and Botanical Landscape (Northern Cape), just to the south of the Ai-Ais Richtersveld National Park − an area of equivalent size and beauty was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Unlike the National Park, the Richtersveld Community Conservancy, which forms the core zone of the World Heritage Site, is not subject to diamond mining and is as a result the more pristine of the two areas. The Richtersveld Cultural and Botanical Landscape of dramatic mountainous desert constitutes a cultural landscape communally owned and managed. This heritage site sustains the semi-nomadic pastoral livelihood of the Nama people, reflecting seasonal patterns that may have persisted for as much as two millennia in southern Africa.

The Richtersveld is regarded as the only Arid Biodiversity Hotspot on Earth.” Located in northern Namaqualand, the arid Namaqua National Park represents a harsh landscape where water is a great scarcity and only the hardiest of life forms survive. Despite this, the Richtersveld is regarded as the only Arid Biodiversity Hotspot on earth, with an astonishing variety of plant, bird and animal life (much of which is endemic).

Characterised by extreme temperatures, the communally run landscape affords a semi-nomadic pastoral livelihood for the Nama-people, descendants of the Khoisan-people who once occupied lands across southern Namibia and most of the present-day Western and Northern Cape provinces of South Africa. Khoisan is a term used to describe two separate groups, physically similar in being light-skinned and small in stature. The Khoi, who were called Hottentots by the Europeans, were pastoralists and were effectively annihilated. The San, also referred to as Bushmen by the Europeans were huntergatherers. A small San population still lives in South Africa. It is the only area where the Nama still construct portable rush-mat houses (haru om) and includes seasonal migrations and grazing grounds, together with stock posts. The pastoralists collect medicinal and other plants and have a strong oral tradition associated with different places and attributes of the landscape. The extensive communal grazed lands bear testimony to the land management processes which have ensured the protection of the succulent Karoo vegetation, the World Heritage Committee noted. This demonstrates a harmonious interaction between people and nature. The Richtersveld Cultural and Botanical Landscape covers 160 000 hectares of dramatic mountainous desert in the north-west part of South Africa. A unique feature of the site is that it is owned and managed by a community that until recently had very little to call its own. HT

Love

Weddings − Menecia & Riaan Blaauw

lasts forever

I

by Stef Cupido

t all started with a Chappies bubblegum in the teacher’s lounge, ten years ago. “Bubblegum?” he asked. Doesn’t he realise that I only eat Clorets, she thought. She took the bubblegum anyway − she liked him. He knew that when she accepted his gift that she liked him too.

The journey continued and as their love grew, so did their family.

Happy laughter and happy feet filled the home that they created.”

Weddings − Menecia & Riaan Blaauw

Living a busy family-oriented life the two teachers never had a dull moment. Happy laughter and happy feet filled the home that they created, and the days are filled with light and love. Their love made them one and the next story unfolds. She said “yes” and he jumped with joy − they made the decision to never be witout each other. They will become one, they are one. The story goes on but it won’t be the same story. It will always be their story.

Forever... HT
