ELECTIONS: How, where and when to vote KERRY VAN RENSBURG With national and provincial elections set to take place on Wednesday 7 May, politicians are hard at work trying to convince South African voters why they should put an X alongside the icon of their party printed on the ballot papers. This is also the 20th anniversary of South Africa’s democracy, free of apartheid, that allows every citizen over the age of 18 to vote. The municipal electoral officer for the Overstrand for the elections is Coenie Groenewald. Mosili Koloko is the Independent Electoral
Commission (IEC) electoral project coordinator for the Overstrand and the only permanent staff member at the local IEC office. This IEC office is no longer based at the municipality where it was situated for the past 10 years; the office has now moved to Shop 4A, Twin Gables, 26 High Street, Hermanus. According to the provincial IEC office, there are 49 660 registered voters in the Overstrand municipal area. There are 29 voting stations, stretching from Gansbaai to Betty’s Bay in the Overstrand which will be manned by 354 staff. All presiding officers completed their training on 25 April. To make sure all the necessary systems are in place ahead of voting day, stress tests were conducted on 9 and 29 April. Applications for special votes closed on 17 April. This special vote applies to people who are physically unfit, disabled or pregnant or those who cannot vote at their designated polling station. These votes will be cast on 5 and 6 May. If your application for a home visit has been approved, you’ll be visited by IEC officials at the given address, depending on the number of approved special votes for
a voting district. Only voting stations with approved special vote applications for voting station visits will be open on Monday and Tuesday from 09:00 – 17:00, until all special votes have been cast. You can still check if they are registered on the common voters roll until the last day before elections. The contact details for the local IEC office are: 028 312 1464 / 028 312 1465 or 082 942 1008; email: kolokom@elections.org.za or see: www.elections.org.za. As 7 May is a public holiday, you can vote from 07:00 to 21:00 at the following venues: Gansbaai Golf Club; Masakhane Community Hall; Pretorius Hall in Gansbaai; Blompark Community Hall; Hermanus Municipal Buildings in Magnolia Avenue; De Mond Caravan Park; Municipal Traffic Department; Mount Pleasant Primary School, Ertjiesvlei Kerksaal in the Hemel-en-Aaarde Valley, Qhayiya Secondary School, Hou Moed Centre, Lukhanyo Primary School, Zwelihle Community Hall, Sandbaai Hall, Hawston Secondary School, Lake Marina Yacht and Boat Club, Honingklip Farm in Kleinmond, Kleinmond Town Hall, Mthimkhulu Centre, Crassula
Community Hall in Betty’s Bay, Community Hall in Proteadorp, Pearly Beach Recreation Hall, Stanford Community Hall (Die Stoor), Baardskeerdersbos Community Hall, St Pauls Skool (Withoogte), Zwelihle Primary School, De Wet Hall in Onrus, Amana Conference Centre in Vermont. ) On voting day electoral staff will: • Check your ID and hands to ensure there is no ink on your fingers. • Verify that the photo in your ID looks like you, and whether you are registered. • Cross off your name from the voters’ roll. • Mark your thumb with indelible ink. • Issue two ballot papers - one for the national vote and one for the provincial vote. • Direct you to a voting booth. • Make sure you put your ballot papers into the relevant ballot box. When the voting stations close, the votes are counted at each election venue and the verified outcome for each venue publicly displayed. The ballot boxes are sealed and transported to the IEC central operations room where an independent auditor will verify the results before sending them to the provincial and national IEC offices.
Which party will get your vote on 7 May ? COMPILED BY KERRY VAN RENSBURG The Electoral Commission has published the final list of candidates for the May 7 national and provincial elections and has provided candidates with certificates confirming their candidacy. The final lists contain a total of 8 651 candidates standing for election on the regional, national and provincial lists of 45 political parties. There are 2 089 candidates on national lists, 2 165 candidates on regional lists and 4 397 candidates on provincial lists contesting 400 National Assembly and 430 Provincial Legislature seats. Here is a quick overview of the manifestos of some of these political parties. Agang SA Led by Mamphela Ramphele. Party slogan: Restoring the Promise of Freedom: Agang SA is a fresh start for all South Africans – a new, nonracial politi cal home. Agang, which means “build” in Sesotho, stands for clean government to restore the promise of freedom to all South Africans: equali ty, dignity and hope for all. Their manifesto includes the following initiatives: • Free education up to and including tertiary level; • Increasing school pass mark to 50%; • Filling teacher vacancies; • Replacing SETAs with inter alia, artisan training cen tres; • Eliminating overlaps in entrepreneurship support and finance institutions and locating hubs in townships; • Disbursement of stateowned land to encourage home ownership, entrepreneurship and industrialisation; • Linking public servant pay with performance; • Professionalising the public service, including police; • Streamlining government and reducing red tape; • Creating a more flexible labour market. African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) Led by Dr Kenneth Me shoe, the African Christian Democratic Party brings hope to South Africa for a strong, healthy, prosper ous and purposedriven nation. The party stands for Christian democratic principles and recognises that vibrant, healthy fami lies are the building blocks of a strong, valuebased society. The ACDP stands for a ‘shared future’ and is determined to provide reliable, trustworthy leaders who are passionate about addressing the needs and improving the lives of all South Africans. We value unity and diversity and are com mitted to protecting freedom of religion and family integrity. Reasons to vote ACDP include: • Jobs – To boost employment, reduce poverty and achieve annual economic growth of 7%. • Welfare – The social wage, which includes social wel faregrants, isnecessaryintheshorttermtoaddresspoverty and inequality. • Safety – Violent crime is rampant in South Africa be cause perpetrators are not swiftly apprehended, tried, con victed and sentenced. • Integrity – Corruption is stealing our country’s future. Integrity is the internal compass we must all carry.
• Education – Education develops a nation’s character and determines its future prosperity. • Health – Preventative primary health care and good nutrition are the cornerstone of the ACDP’s health policy. • Housing and Land – Respect property ownership and extend this to as many as possible. African National Congress (ANC) Led by President Jacob Zuma. The campaign slo gan is: Together we move South Africa forward. Twenty years ago the ANC began a journey to eradicate the legacy of apartheid. It has been 20 years of freedom and de mocracy. The lives of our people have vastly improved and South Africa is a much better place than it was before 1994. Over the last five years, the ANC has worked together with all South Africans to do more to fight poverty and unemployment and reduce inequality. Despite the negative global economic situation, we have built on the social gains achieved since 1994. More of our people have been lifted out of extreme poverty; we have created more jobs than before; expanded social grants, housing and basic services to our people; and fur ther improved access to better education and health care. Yet the challenges facing our country are immense. Poverty, inequality and unemployment still affect the lives of many people. Corruption continues to erode our social fabric and undermine our development efforts. The ANC plans to: • Build an inclusive economy that creates jobs; • Transform our rural areas; • Ensuredecentlivingconditionsandsustainablehuman settlements; • Improve and expand education and training; • Ensure quality health care for all by implementing the next phase of the National Health Insurance (NHI) through the creation of a publicly funded and administered NHI Fund, strengthen and expand the free primary health care programme, improve management of public hospitals, and reduce the costs of private health care as well as intensify the campaign against HIV and Aids to ensure at least 4,6 millionpeoplereceiveantiretrovirals, andexpandthemale circumcision and HIVcounselling and testing programmes. Ensure chronic medication is available and delivered closer to where patients live. • Expand comprehensive social security. Democratic Alliance (DA) Led by Premier Helen Zille. Party slogan: Togeth er for change, together for jobs. We all agree that South Africa is a better place than it was in 1994. Great progress was made in de livering services under President Mandela and President Mbeki’s governments. But since then, many South Africans have lost the sense of optimism that our first presi dents gave us. What changed? The ANC changed. Jacob Zuma’s ANC has forgotten the hope and promise of 1994. Today, the challenges facing South Africa are great. The number of South Africans without work continues to grow, and too many communities still live in fear of crime. Most people feel powerless to fight the corruption of the leaders they once trusted to serve them. But these problems can be overcome. Together we can change South Africa,
and we can create jobs. A DA government will: • Save R30 billion per year by cutting corruption and firing corrupt officials; • Speed up the delivery of housing and basic services through clean and efficient government; • Introduce a constituencybased electoral system to make MPs more accountable; • Make communities safer by putting 250 000 properly trained police officers on the streets; • Fight gangsterism and drugs by reinstating the Nar cotics Bureau and building more rehabilitation centres; •Workwiththeprivatesectortoprovidequality, afforda ble health care for all; • Ensure that the social grants system is a means to lift people out of poverty; • Dedicate an extra R10 billion to speed up land reform and provide training and support for emerging farmers; • Provide quality education by training 15 000 more teachers per year and giving every child a textbook for every subject; • Increase the NSFAS budget to R1,6 billion so that no student is denied further education because they cannot afford it; • Create one million internships to give work experience to young job seekers; • Provide seven million EPWP opportunities to alleviate poverty and provide a stepup for job seekers; • Make South Africa a nation of entrepreneurs by cutting red tape and providing more support and training for small business; • Improve black economic empowerment so that it re wards companies that invest in their workers and create jobs; • Break up inefficient state monopolies, and distribute shares to ordinary citizens, to increase competition and bring down prices; • Invest at least 10% of GDP in the roads, ports, railways, airways, water and communication infrastructure that the economy needs to grow. Freedom Front Plus (FFP) Vryheidsfront Plus Led by Dr Pieter Mulder. The “new South Africa” which came into being in 1994, has failed due to af firmative action, joblosses as a result of transforma tion, marginalisation of mi norities, poor service deliv ery, poor management, in competence, cadre deployment, nepotism, political appointments, lust for pow er, abuse of power, corruption, fraud, selfenrichment, cov erups, incompetence, crime, farm murders, populism and ideological obsessiveness. Everyone in South Africa, apart from the ANC’s inner circle who has been advantaged by it, wants a country without these features. South Africa is a nation of more than 50 million individu als but also one of many communities, minorities and peo ples. Eleven official languages, 31 cultures, different reli gions, etc. who throughout history have ended up together in South Africa. We urgently need a dispensation in which recognition is given, not only to the individuals in our country but also to the communities, the minorities and diversity of South Africa as the real building blocks of true unity in diversity. The FF Plus’ new mission wishes to establish a dream and an ideal which will motivate and inspire not only Afri kaners, but also other minorities, groups and as many South Africans as is possible. MARINE CONSERVATION:
Hermanus to be included in launch of SA’s Hope Spots A Mission Blue Expedition to South Africa in December will see the launch of the country’s first five Hope Spots. The Mission Blue Expedition will be led by Dr Sylvia Earle, the architect of the Hope Spot initiative, who is also a National Geographic explorer in residence, Ted Award Winner, marine conservationist and author, the recipient of 24 honorary degrees, and arguably the world’s most famous diver. Earle will speak at special events, dive in the country’s beautiful waters and engage with the people of South Africa. The expedition will also launch the book Splendours of South African Seas, for which the public submitted photographs, to celebrate 20 years of South Africa’s democracy.
Hope is a theme of this book. What are Hope Spots? Hope Spots are a global network of marine areas identified as being critical to sustaining the long-term health of the ocean’s ecosystems. Mission Blue, the promoter and driver of Hope Spots, was established through the Sylvia Earle Alliance (SEA), an initiative aimed at exploring and caring for the oceans. The Sustainable Seas Trust (SST) is Mission Blue’s South African partner organisation, which is overseeing the launch of South Africa’s first five Hope Spots. South African Hope Spots South Africa will build up its list of Hope
Spots with the first being launched by Earle at Aliwal Shoal in KwaZulu-Natal, as well as Algoa Bay, Plettenberg Bay, Knysna and in the Hermanus area. Earle will dive to unveil a plaque at the Hermanus Hope Spot. Similar patterns will be followed in the other Hope Spot areas. “It isn’t too late to shift from the swift, sharp decline of ocean systems in recent decades to an era of steady recovery. There is time, but not a lot. The next 10 years may be the most crucial time for the ocean in the next ten thousand years. Our past, our present, and whatever remains of our future, absolutely depend on what we do now,” says Earle.
Birders contribute to renosterveld conservation KERRY VAN RENSBURG BirdLife Overberg handed over a cheque worth R10 000 to Dr Odette Curtis, director of the Overberg Lowlands Conservation Trust, at their monthly meeting on Monday 14 April. The donation was made possible thanks, in part, to the sale of BirdLife Overberg’s calendars. Curtis was a guest speaker at BirdLife Overberg earlier in the year. Overberg Lowlands Conservation Trust is involved in renosterveld conservation. Curtis says this habitat contains the highest diversity of flowering bulbs in the world and occurs only in the lowlands of the Western Cape. However, more than 95% has been ploughed for agriculture, leaving this rich system critically endangered. “Recently, the Overberg Lowlands Conservation Trust became the proud manager of the first piece of true lowland renosterveld to have been purchased for conservation through a collaborative project between us and WWF-SA,” says Curtis. “This special piece of renosterveld – 500 ha on the eastern side of the R319 between Bredasdorp and Swellendam – forms part of the largest piece of lowland renosterveld left in the world.” They plan to establish the first renosterveld visitor and research centre on this reserve. For more details visit www.overbergrenosterveld. org.za or call Dr Odette Curtis on 083 551 3341.

Friends of Hermanus Hospital call it a day KERRY VAN RENSBURG
Is there any point in carrying on? This was the final question asked by Terry Kelly, legal advisor of the Friends of Hermanus Hospital (FHH), at the final meeting of the FHH on 23 April. The fate of this organisation, that has stood alongside the Hermanus Provincial Hospital
for the past 14 years, was finally decided by a total of 16 people who were present at the meeting, which took place in the somewhat dismal minor hall at St Peter’s Church. Angela Heslop, who stepped down as chairperson of FHH at the organisation’s AGM in March, said in the last 21 days lots of people she doesn’t even know, have acknowledged the input of FHH after hearing that there was a possibility the organisation may be dissolved.

“We need new people to man the ship, an engine to pull the train and a horse to pull the cart,” were some of the cries that were heard at the meeting. Heslop asked: “If we decide not to abandon ship, who will continue with it? No one has come forward yet to take over the organisation, andiftherewasanyone, theywouldhaveshown themselves by now.” Kelly said if two thirds of the members
present decided to dissolve the organisation, then that is what would happen. In the end, 11 of the 16 people present voted to dissolve the FHH. Heslop says she feels a bit flat but relieved, now that the final decision has been made. She says the director of social development will need to be notified that the NGO has dissolved, as well as all the volunteers, contributors, Dr Frans Krige and the Western Cape Health Department.

– SSMA/Fanie Krige

Whale Crier to lead the way in Hermanus On Tour mission
Gathering at the Windsor Hotel on Monday to fine tune the arrangements for Hermanus On Tour were Blake Albert (Windsor Hotel), Yolande van der Walt (Windsor Hotel), Annemarie Sales (The Potting Shed), Simone Heunis (Ocean Eleven), Charl de Kock (Whale Coast Hotel), Meagan de Jager (Ocean Eleven) and Birgitta Weaving (Windsor Hotel). Indaba, here we come Hermanus will have a presence at the Tourism Indaba 2014 (10–12 May) in Durban thanks largely to the Hermanus Tourism Bureau and 16 of its members who have come together to form a marketing campaign called “Hermanus On Tour” (HOT). According to one of the participating members, Blake Albert (general manager of the Windsor Hotel), they are taking a message to the local and international tourism role players and that message is “Hermanus is much more than a one-night destination”. The Cape Whale Coast will again have representation at Indaba by way of the Cape Town Western Cape Stand (WESGRO) located at the Durban exhibition centre alongside all the other provincial authorities and provincial products. “All those in the know, know that the real business is done in the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Convention Centre (Durban ICC) and for this purpose, Hermanus On Tour
has taken a stand in the ICC located next to some of the most prominent hotel groups and tour operators in the country,” says Albert. This HOT group consists of seasoned veterans of previous Indabas and other international shows as well as a few novices for whom this will be their first trip to Indaba. “It is this unique blend that makes this a pioneering group of a few businesses and individuals who have put aside their personal agendas in collaboration for the greater good of tourism and businesses in Hermanus. The competition is not each other, it’s other towns in the Western Cape that have placed themselves smartly in the market,” says Albert. “We may not all agree all the time, but we share a common goal – to market Hermanus and get more tourists coming to our region. The future is in our hands and we need to stop talking and start doing– that is when we will achieve our true effectiveness.” The five anchor businesses involved who will be representing
the town of Hermanus at Indaba include SA Forest Adventures, Windsor Hotel, Whale Coast Hotel, Ocean Eleven Guest House and Great White Shark Tours. The Hermanus Tourism Bureau will be represented by the Whale Crier. Other financial contributors to this campaign are The Potting Shed, Southern Right Charters, Tuk Tuk, Francolin Hof, Marine Dynamics, Walkerbay Adventures, Dave de Beer, Lemon Butta, La Pentola and Wine Village. “Indaba is not a consumer show, it is a trade show where the supplier meets the buyer in the tourism industry. The collective message that Hermanus is sending, is that instead of using Hermanus only as a one-night stay on the way to, or back from the Garden Route, rather regard Hermanus as a unique stay-over that simply cannot be captured overnight. “There is no other place in the world that has our diversity of marine life, fynbos, wines, festivals and adventure within such close proximity,” says Albert.
The Whale Crier, Eric Davalala, will be the centrepiece of the Hermanus On Tour initiative. (See adjacent). The Whale Crier is a true South African icon and has visited international tourism bureaus and other international events, but this is Eric’s first visit to the Tourism Indaba. He will be embarking on a 12 day Hermanus On Tour road trip departing 6 May, to inspire South Africans and foreigners alike to visit Hermanus and surrounds. Eric will be escorted by Jeanette du Toit from Jaydee Media, as he makes his way from Hermanus along the Garden Route and finishing at the HOT stand in Durban. Along the way he will be stopping at strategically important towns,
participating in many media events and giving away spot prizes (for visits/adventures in Hermanus) as well as at the HOT stand to the value of R250 000. Everyone and anyone can be part of this initiative and road trip by tracking our Whale Crier live on www.hermanusontour.com and also on social media (twitter.com/ HermanusOnTour and www.facebook.com/Hermanus-OnTour). “It is with our effort as a community that we can cement Hermanus as more than a one night stay and we can all benefit from its knock-on effect,” says Blake Albert, GM of the Windsor Hotel. Should any business wish to sponsor prizes, please contact Yolande on hermanusontour@gmail.com.

TOP 100 AWARD: The newly released Jakob’s Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 won Top 100 SA Wines status in this prestigious competition announced in April. Only 7 Cabernet Sauvignon wines feature in the Top 100. Jakob’s Vineyards is a small boutique wine farm in the HemelenAarde Ridge ward. The wine was made by winemaker PeterAllan Finlayson. Owner André de Lange (photo) explains that Cabernet Sauvignon is not a common variety in the HemelenAarde area, but that the vines do extremely well in this cool climate on their spe cific site. The wine was allowed to ferment naturally on whole berries, and aged for 18 months in a combination of new and second fill French oak barrels. As Jakob’s Vineyards only has one hectare of Cabernet Sauvignon under vine, a very limited quantity of this wine is available. The wine is sold directly from the farm at R170 per bottle (free delivery in SA). Con tact: wine@jakobsvineyards.co.za.

FYNARTS CHALLENGE: Whose hake or honey dish is the best? For the month of May, chefs participating in the Fynarts Culinary Challenge entered in one, or both, of the following categories: – a seafood dish where the hero is hake; – a speciality dish or dessert making use of Cape honey. Whether an exotic twist on an old favourite, or their own personal creation, the chefs will go all out to create a winning dish. You are all welcome to take part in the fun and support these restaurants by tasting the dishes and filling in the evaluation form provided by Hermanus Tourism. It is a public holiday that commemorates the Queen’s birthday and is the most popular Dutch celebration. This year Queen’s Day has become King’s Day for the first time as Prince WillemAlexander has succeeded his mother Queen Beatrix, as King of the Neth erlands. All over Holland there are parties, outdoor concerts and other events. People dress up and let their hair down, and turn Holland orange. This is the Dutch version of the New Orleans Mardis Gras or New Year’s Eve in New York City. Holland is packed to the rafters with visitors coming to enjoy this festive Dutch celebration. Dying to see a doctor... When you are a pensioner with no medical aid, you can go to the provincial hospital where you need to follow the system. First they draw your folder, then you get sent to a clinic to make an appointment for a doctor. Now that’s no problem except that it’s a month away. But I need help now! So I see the doctor a month later who books me for a sonar and takes a blood sample. I then take the results of the sonar back to the clinic. The sister promptly puts it into my folder and tells me I can only get an appointment one month later.
A month later I hopefully run along to get the results – but the doctor is not there. Sorry, doctor in a meeting and results of the blood test are not there either. Now what? You guessed right, the doctor can only see me in a month’s time, so I’m waiting again. How can one have confidence in a system like this? A pensioner gets free medical care – but this is the care you get. Where is our quality of life? It’s very scary – one could die waiting. I’m quite serious.

A VAN NIEKERK HERMANUS
Mary Faure, koördineerder: Hermanus FynArts 2014 / voorsitter: Hermanus Toerisme:
We must keep people involved through FHH I am a 5th year medical student at Stellenbosch University and a Friend of Hermanus Hospital (FHH). During these difficult times for the FHH, I would like to offer my opinion on this matter, as this organisation lies very close to my heart. In this letter I wish to convince you of how important FHH is in our community and to dissuade the dissolution of this valuable and successful organisation. In promoting wellness and health in a community, the community itself plays a vital part in achieving this goal. As future doctors we are repeatedly reminded in theory classes of how important the community is and how active participation should be encouraged in decisions about their health. When community members volunteer, they give freely of their time and of themselves. The community needs to ‘own’ their diseases and the various problems their local hospital faces (be they financial or otherwise). What better way of promoting wellness and health is there to be found than the participation of the community? In fact, having community members actively volunteer to make the hospital (and therefore the community at large) a better, more effective environment is what we should strive for. I do agree that there should be restrictions as to what or where can be volunteered, but with the committee of FFH consisting of medical professionals (in part), there is no lack of knowledge as to when and how volunteering would be appropriate. It is my personal and professional opinion that there are activities that the community members can engage in without in any way disturbing the quality of health care received at the Hermanus Hospital – while still providing the hospital
with much needed assistance (filing, administration, job shadowing, raising funds, provision of clothes to patients ect.). As a young student at Hermanus High, my dream was to study medicine. I needed to do community service hours to strengthen my application to be accepted into the course. The chairperson of FHH, Angela Heslop, took great pains to make this possible for me (and other young volunteers of my age). I personally know of three students currently studying medicine or dental health that have directly benefited from volunteering and being exposed to the hospital environment through volunteering for FHH. The young people of Hermanus need an opportunity to be exposed to the field of medicine as it is vital to experience the reality of the hospital environment before choosing it as your future career. In short: we as young people in Hermanus need this organisation to enable us to achieve our dreams. Job shadowing might seem like a minor function to the community at large, but this in effect reaches many people. We as future doctors and nurses benefit directly from FFH and I personally think my application might not have been successful without the opportunity FHH gave me to prove my commitment to health care. This organisation is, I believe, a vital part of promoting health and wellness to the community of Hermanus. This organisation provides a free service that helps the community. I personally cannot see how this is in any way a bad thing. My sincere hope is that this organisation continues to promote health to the community – by the community.

Let’s get the facts straight about Haws! I find it bizarre that certain individuals can criticise the Hermanus Animal Welfare Society (Haws) without any tested and confirmed facts. (Referring to an SMS previously in the Hermanus Times). The SAPS K9 dogs were desperate for a home after almost two years, as no one came forward to help them. The eight temporary kennels they occupy at Haws do not displace any welfare animals. These are accommodated in loose kennels in our outdoor run, so it is not true that their presence necessitated euthanising welfare dogs. We have the same amount of dogs
and only euthanise old and sick or aggressive, unsocial dogs difficult to home. The K9 dogs will be moving into newly built kennels on our premises soon. Accommodating the K9 dogs is generating an income for Haws, which is always needed. Those pointing fingers at Haws must please realise it is a difficult job and we do our best under trying circumstances in this day and age. I suggest this critic join our dedicated team of volunteers who spend many hours a week caring for our furry friends. This will soothe the desire to criticise!
ILZE SMITH CHAIRPERSON, HAWS
Disappointed in security I have been subscribed to Safe Security for about 35 years. On Thursday 17 April at 02:00 I was woken by a burglar who was attempting to enter my home. When I shone a torch on him he ran and jumped over a gate, dropping his knife. I phoned Safe Security and, after about six rings, which felt like forever, the phone was answered. I explained what had happened and requested their assistance. After 30 minutes of no response I phoned again and was informed that their reaction units were occupied with a power failure in Sandbaai. Thursday I phoned repeatedly and requested to speak with the manager to no avail. I did receive an email attempting to explain, but not very convincingly. Is this good enough for my family’s safety?
CONCERNED CITIZEN
Richard Reck from Safe Security Hermanus answers:
In the 17 years we have been in operation we have developed a set of protocols
which currently sees our clients enjoy the lowest incident rate per client in the Hermanus area. The call of “concerned citizen” indicated that there had been an intruder, and the intruder had left the property. There was no mention of a knife which, according to the client, was only found the next day. Ordinarily a vehicle would have been dispatched to patrol the area in which the client’s home is located, however due to a general power failure in the Sandbaai area we were experiencing a significantly high number of panic and burglary signals. This required re-allocation of our resources to attend to actual alarms. We are contracted by our clients to attend to alarm signals received from their premises and we need to assess the priorities of such signals and attend accordingly. If “concerned citizen” has had an intruder in his home and had notified us as such, we are sure that we would not have been satisfied if our response vehicle was rather spending time hunting down a trespasser at another location than attending to his emergency.

En soos almal weet is die suidoos bitter onvoorspelbaar as hy eers by Grabouw aankom.

No reaction from law enforcement to drunk-driving warning
Visit to the hospital a nightmare
I am extremely unhappy with the course of events on Easter Friday morning. At 07:45 I arrived at Sandbaai beach and observed a bunch of people drinking alcohol in the car park. I said to them: “Are you guys starting to drink at this time of the morning?” They replied they had been drinking all night. You can imagine in what state they were. When I asked who would be driving the vehicles, they said that they were, and asked me if I had a prob-
For any future visitors to the Hermanus Provincial Hospital... beware. My daughter was basically numb with fever and couldn’t breathe when I was told she isn’t an emergency and she and her mom were treated like outlaws because “it’s after hours – why didn’t you visit the clinic”. So to all sick children, your illnesses may only run until 17:00.
Please be timely about it. I am utterly disgusted by this treatment. And then I am told her family is not allowed to visit her, and we should enter one by one only. But other families are allowed to enter by the hordes! Provincial hospital, please do something about your priorities. Our children are our future, but it doesn’t seem to bother you.

Missing cats - a sign of something else? I recently rescued a snow white adult cat called Angel from the Hermanus Animal Welfare Society (HAWS) and was very careful to get her settled into our little family. She slept on my bed every night and had her open window access to freely roam. Upon returning she spent most of the afternoon relaxing with one of my dogs. On Sunday 23 March she went missing from Long Street in Sandbaai. I placed a notice at the Sandbaai shop, called HAWS to report her gone and have walked and knocked on various doors, called her etc. She responds to her name and comes when called, which is unusual for a cat. She was such a delightful part of our family. After no return I became aware of notices of missing cats in my area. Many missing cats. There are cats going missing daily it seems. Definitely a few every week – surely this is not usual?
I am not sure if anyone is aware or is able to do something about this, but during a recent discussion with one of my neighbours it was mentioned that perhaps there is a dogfighting ring somewhere in Hermanus? A few years back in Knysna, smaller fluffy dogs went missing as well as cats and the pet shops began having a demand for rabbits. The dogs were being trained to fight by being thrown into enclosures with these animals to stimulate their killing instincts – at the actual dog-fighting rings small fluffy dogs or cats are thrown into the ring to begin the fighting frenzy. I really do hope that I am wrong, but if someone can please shed some light on the topic and be aware of the amount of missing small pets. Please will the authorities be on the look-out for this kind of illegal sport which renders financial gain and is why this happens.

On 3 April a friend and I were crossing the Onrus/Kidbrooke intersection on foot from the Onrus side to the Onrus Manor side. We had started already when the red man on the traffic light started to flash. Instead of going back we hurried to get to the other side. Near the end of the crossing I went flying, landing near the wheels of a car that had stopped, facing Hermanus. My right arm and my left knee were damaged in the fall. There

were small stones on the road, on which I skidded and fell. Nobody got out of either of the two cars that were stopped, waiting for the green light. I heard the robots go ta-ta-ta, and guessed the motorists had not seen me, nor my friend coming behind me. I panicked and got up as fast as I could to take the few more steps to the end of the crossing. The second the lights turned green, these cars just sped off.
Fortunately for me, I am recovering. The doctor tells me because I am an avid walker my bones and muscles are strong, and that’s why my kneecap and arm were not broken. But it will take at least six weeks or more before I will be 100% fit again. So let this be a warning to others, when you see the red man flashing, rather go back. And look at your feet, for holes and loose stones. There is no time to cross that road in time.

Deal with the cause and not the consequence In my letter of 24 April titled “Statistics reveal shocking levels of pollution” a response letter was published by the senior manager of the municipal Environmental Services. Some points were raised which I would briefly like to respond to. When considering property development on the estuary and Klein River, 80% of the developments pertaining to the sewage pollution issues are of recent construction (20 years) and people were aware of setback and building lines. In my opinion the crux of the matter is to deal with the cause of the sewage contamination and not the consequence. It is the responsibility and within the competence of the municipality. It is argued that they have the jurisdiction over the properties surrounding the estuary and through the Water Supply and Sanitation

I was told that they were closed. This is totally unacceptable – these people would have been a danger on our roads, exposing innocent people to a tragedy. Of course if there had been an accident, then the authorities would come with screaming sirens. I subsequently heard that another person also spent an hour phoning law enforcement. This is the third time I have called on them with no response at all.

I phoned law enforcement and asked them to send the authorities out. Ten minutes later I phoned again and spoke to someone else and told them the same story. After half-an-hour, when I drove past them, still nobody had arrived. I phoned again and asked to have the Traffic Department number, but

Services Bylaw, for instance, are obligated to intervene and manage the pollution and not side step the issue and look beyond to a different set of concerns and management scenarios which would, as the writer mentioned, be conducted through BOCMA mandates. Looking further into the ES’s response, I feel there is a danger of obscurantism preventing a conclusive diagnosis of the problem. For instance, there is no agricultural run off (hence no animal waste present) in the case of Hermanus Yacht Club nor at the Grotto beach stormwater site which could contribute to such high levels of contamination. The same applies to the Stanford Kings Street site. The readings 300 meters down stream were well below acceptable levels (185 cfu/per 100 ml and not the 1 100 cfu found at King Street).
Lastly, with regard to getting the water sampling records from the municipality, it’s worth mentioning that it took from 20 December (first contact with the writer) until 19 March to be furnished with the records, three months to the day! My request, in actual fact, had to be approved by the director of management services, the director of community services, the director of infrastructure and planning, the offices of the council support services, the environmental specialist, the senior manager environmental services (the writer) and WESSA. It is indeed hard to believe, and only with the Access to Information Act was this rigmarole undertaken by the municipality. One last thing, on 23 January, a single day reading on Grotto beach for Intestinal Enterocci was 2 419 cfu/per 100 ml and that’s in the sea!

Sy LLM-tesis, getiteld An evaluation of the role and functioning of an Appeal Authority created in terms of Section 62 of the Local Government: Municipal Systems Act 32 of 2000, was die vrug van vier jaar se intensiewe navorsing. “My studies was net moontlik met die ondersteuning van my gesin,” sê Anton. “Hulle moes baie opofferings maak.” Hy vertel hoe sy vrou, Sonet, en twee kinders, dogter Monique (nou 25 en ’n onderwyser in Knysna) en seun Ferdinand (nou 23, ’n student in wyn- en wingerdbou, werksaam by Gabriëlskloof) soms alleen met vakansie moes gaan en hom by die huis agtergelaat het om te studeer. “Ek het lang ure gewerk by my onderneming A&W Glas, en moes soggens tussen vier en ses studeer voordat ek werk toe gaan.

Caroline retires after 43 years in the jewellery trade KERRY VAN RENSBURG She has worked for three generations of the same family and was 15 when she started working in Spyros Maroudas’ jewellery shop. He was Spyros Paizes’ grandfather, and the teenager who started working in his shop in 1970, is Caroline Benjamin. She has been part of Spyros Jewellers and Hermanus Jewellers – a family-owned business – for 43 years. Caroline says besides working at Spyros, she also worked in the nearby Hermanus Jewellers, which was run by Zoe Maroudes, wife of Spyros Maroudas. Spyros Paizes says: “When my father, Andrew Paizes, took over the business in 1986, Caroline continued working at Spyros. In 2008 my brother Costa and I took over the business.” Caroline has finally decided to retired and her last working day was 30 April which ended with a farewell party at the Cattle Baron. “In all these years Caroline has been a bundle of energy and has been an asset to the company. She was not only an employee, but a friend to all of us. She had a big heart and would do anything for us,” says

Spyros. “He (Spyros) was not even born when I started here,” says Caroline. Working with three generations of this family-owned business, she says: “It’s like family. I taught myself to re-string pearls, and I built up good relationships with the customers over the years.” Caroline has also worked alongside her sister Mabel Josephs in the jewellery shops for more than 30 years. Spyros says he remembers how Caroline used to pick them up from school, help cover text books and take them to the park. “Caroline, affectionately known as Kalla, can never be replaced. She is one of a kind and with tears in our eyes, we say goodbye to her. “We wish her luck in future endeavours and her retirement, but knowing Kalla, she will be as busy as ever. We will miss her.” And yes, Caroline, who lives in Hawston with her rugbyplayer husband, Samuel Benjamin, will be busy it seems. She says she will be able to look after her grandson Deano, and she will continue washing the rugby jerseys for the Hawston Rugby Club as she has been doing all along.

Stimulating talks at Hermanus FynArts An entertaining, stimulating and varied collection of talks, most of them richly illustrated, are again on the Hermanus FynArts (6-16 June) programme, and are sponsored by the Hermanus Times. The opening speaker will be Alayne Reeseberg, CEO of World Design Capital (WDC), Cape Town. If you have wondered what the fuss is all about – and the benefits – of this event, don’t miss this talk that will include a look at the Social Capital of Festivals. And don’t miss the closing talk by Chris Whelan on The Art of Design: Design Thinking either. Chris is the CEO of Accelerate Cape Town and the vice-chairperson of WDC. Why do some artists choose satire? Jaco Sieberhagen (sculptor), Richard Smith (painter and cartoonist) and John Scott (journalist) will chat to chairperson Christopher Hope who will explore with them Spitting Images: the satirist’s art. One of the great legacies left to the citizens of South Africa, is the remarkable collection of over 2 700 photographic plates and negatives making up the Thomas Ravenscroft Collection, which is held in the Cape Archives. Not only was this remarkable man a photographer of great technical excellence in a world without digital cameras, editing and high-tech film, but he was also an artist in his own right, who used his camera not just to capture images but to convey mood and record history. When he died in Hermanus at 96 he was the oldest working photographer in the world. He had travelled the length and breadth of Southern Africa, capturing with his cameras how the land, its peoples, its buildings and landscapes looked from circa. 1870, through two World Wars right up to 1948. A large body of his work, including over 80 photographs and 16 postcards, is included in an illustrated talk about Ravenscroft by Felicity Jervis, a social historian and genealogist specialising in the Overberg, to be given to FynArts in the Municipal Auditorium on Wednesday, June 11 at 10:00, followed by refreshments. NATURE MATTERS DID YOU KNOW: One of the many unique bird species as sociated with fynbos is the or ange breasted The orangebreasted sunbird is sunbird, endemic to the Fynbos Biome. which is en demic to the Fynbos Biome. The male bird is the showy one with designer col ours to attract a female – who has more enduring qualities. Like all sunbirds, it has an elongated beak adapted to securing nectar from deep inside Ericas and Proteas. It also eats insects (often taken in flight) and spiders. Bird lovers should remem ber that sugar water is not a healthy diet for sunbirds. They need a balanced diet of nectar and insects to breed successfully.

COMPETITION:BUILDING A VIRTUAL CAR
Matthew Burke wins a new Kia QUICKPIC Kia Motors South Africa (KMSA) launched an exciting on line competition to the South African public. As an industry first, entrants were required to build the newly launched Cerato Koup on KMSA’s Facebook page, by collecting and swopping various part codes. Over the duration of the competition, 38 part codes were hidden all over the internet, in Kia dealerships and in print and radio ads, each one unlocking a different part towards the completion of the virtual car. During the last week of the competition at the end of March, over 4 000 players were competing for the prize, with 248 Kia fans in search of the last code. The final code was released at 12:00 on 31 March 2014 and was hidden in the Cerato Koup microsite. This code was very strategically placed and
hard to find. It was only discovered 26 hours later by Matthew Burke. Matthew, a financial advisor at Liberty Life in Edenvale, made it his top priority to find the last part. “I started playing the game towards the middle of February and started to collect the various codes throughout the competition”, comments Matthew. “Getting the last few parts were very difficult, and I was in total disbelief when I found the last part”. When asked about how he felt when he realised he was the winner, Matthew commented: “I thought it was an April fool joke, as I was called by Kia on the 1st of April”. Matthew is now the proud owner of a brand new 1.6 Turbo GDi Koup, boasting an impressive 152 kW of power. “This was a very exciting competition for all of us at Kia, and was just another platform for us to showcase our power to surprise”, concludes David Sieff, Marketing Director, Kia Motors South Africa.
Matthew Burke receives the keys to his new Kia Cerato Koup.
Hino joins Pinkdrive’s fight against breast cancer QUICKPIC A specially-equipped Hino 500 Series 1626 chassis cab, fitted with a box body, has joined the fleet of vehicles operated by the PinkDrive charitable organisation for its fight against breast cancer in South Africa. The box body is fitted out with very specialised equipment for carrying out mammographic screening and is valued at approximately R10 million. “This is our second mobile mammography unit while we also have a truck-mounted educational unit that traverses the country along with three educational cars,” explained the founder and director of PinkDrive, Noelene Kotschan, “The mobile mammography units travel to semi-urban and urban areas with the objective of enabling various disadvantaged communities access to education, physical examination and how to do breast self-examination in the fight against cancer. We have already provided over 5 000 free mammograms, done over 54 000 clinical breast examinations, educated over 79 000 people and distributed

The fact that BIDVest is a major sponsor of this project resulted in the group’s McCarthy automotive retailer being called on to supply the vehicle. In the end it was Hino Selby that undertook the project, which included lengthening a long-wheelbase 1626 chassis cab and coordinating the construction and fitment
of the box body by Elite, with MWS supplying specialised components. The expensive medical equipment is fitted in three portioned areas in the air conditioned body. The Hino tows a big generating set so that the unit is self-sufficient. The handover of the Hinobased unit took place in Johannesburg recently and the high
profile PinkDrive and its projects occupy in the eyes of the government was evidenced by the attendance at the function of First Lady Tobeka Madiba-Zuma, Deputy Minister of Health, Dr Gwen Ramokgopa, and Deputy Minister of Women, Children and People with Disabilities, Ms Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu and the MEC of Health for Gauteng, Hope Papo.

EASTER FUN AND GAMES: Lots of fun was had by young and old at the annual Easter Fun and Games at the Hermanus Yacht Club. The day was themed as a mini Olympic Games, with a sailing event where kids took to the water in Anything that Floats. Around 40 kids participated in the day’s events set up by willing moms and dads, says Tracy Collingridge, PRO Hermanus Yacht Club. Most of the Anything that Floats ‘boats’ were surf boards fitted with makeshift sails. The entrants had to make their way around a marker in the bay and still be afloat at the end. PHOTOS: TRACY COLLINGRIDGE
This rowing crew on their blowup mattress, made even more comfortable with pillows and blankets, won the prize for the most original craft. In one of the mini Olympic Games events kids had to weave their way through a maze made out of string. These games followed a morning of Easter egg hunting and a fair organised by a group of mums. At the fair they created a variety of fun stations where kids were tasked with putting together a lucky packet, decorating cupcakes, fishing with magnets, making candy floss and creating their own Wakaberry fro zen yoghurt concoctions.

Golf Club roundup
with Julian Shaw Again we had a full week of action at the Hermanus Golf Club, and the weather has played along perfectly. Tuesday saw 42 ladies in the afternoon doing battle. The competition was a fourball betterball stableford. Our victors this week were Isolde Striene and Heinke Douglas with a super 46 points. Wednesday was another full field of men, 113 in total and the competition was a better-ball bonus bogey. The winners were Marius Furst and Ray Calitz on +13, with Ray again putting in another low score of nett 62. The jackpot was won by Glynn Davies, and there was one roaring two club that was claimedscoopingthepool–well done Joe Lyon. A special week also for Roy Smith who turned a sprightly 75, and still playing some super golf – Happy Birthday Roy. Saturday turned out good after a rainy start. The game was a betterball bogey plus and we had 123 players. Winners on the red course with a super +11 were John Simson and Achim Beckmann (those lessons are really paying off!). On the blue course with a massive +13 were JohnPearceandAdriSmit;and on the green course winning on +10 were our Vice Captain Stephan van der Merwe and his partner Frans Prins. Exceptional rounds this week came from Peter Sulley, John Pearce and Bryan Burnside with rounds of 66. Don’t forget members, this Saturday the booking system has now changed. For any questions call the office.

DOGS dodge the elements (well, almost) for jolly golf day ) 29 April in Kleinmond – Individual Stableford (Log): The DOGS braved the weather forecast on Tuesday and almost got away with it. There were just a couple of showers during the back nine, which made it even more surprising that Half-Time Shirley made it all the way to 18. Perhaps his winning score of 42 had something to do with it. Scores in general were high, helped by a couple of obscene five-pointers from Up-andUnder and the ex-Pole-Dancer. The only other obscenities came from The Naked Chef following yet another duck hook. 42 Peter Sulley; 41 Richard Ridge; 39 Geoff Crowther; 37 Jon Forsyth; 34 Fred Garrett, Tony Hackett; 33 John Cheesbrough, Gordon Wilson, Hugh Frangs, Gary Wentzel, Michel, Maury; 32 Mike Graham, Dave Rade, Andre Franken; 31 Alan Smith; 30 Dave Smith; 29
Ian Newman; 27 Peter Thomas, Peter Theron; 24 Pat Dewil, Vic van der Westhuizen; 17 Keith Gillott. ) 22 April in Kleinmond – Individual Stableford (Log): After years of trying, Morse finally solved the case of the missing hot dog following a nail-biting encounter with Countback Forsyth. Countback has now been counted out more times than a boxer with one arm. At the other end, Cruise Thomas saved the blushes of one who is more used to being at the top of the pole. 41 Dave Brittain, Jon Forsyth; 40 Richard Ridge, Chris Martin; 38 Gordon Wilson; 34 Peter Sulley, John Cheesbrough, Ian Newman; 33 David Naylor, Gary Wentzel; 30 Tony Hackett; 28 Geoff Crowther; 27 Sam Seal; 26 Peter Theron; 24 André Franken, Dave Smith, Hugh Frangs; 23 Peter Thomas.
