A 40-year-old man was arrested on Friday in connection with the house robbery and murder of 84-year-old Noreen van der Walt, who died after she was brutally attacked in her home in Westcliff in the beginning of September. Van der Walt was at home with her husband Bernardus Rijks (85), who is bedridden, when the suspect walked into their home in Fourie Street, gaining access through the back door, on Wednesday 4 September at 10:30. He stabbed Noreen several times with a knife before fleeing the scene with R1 000 in cash after her husband pressed the panic button. She died in hospital two days later. According to Lieutenant Fadila September, spokesperson for the Hermanus SAPS, the suspect from Zwelihle appeared in the Hermanus Magistrate’s Court on Monday. He will be sent for psychiatric evaluation at a psychiatric institution to determine whether he is mentally disturbed and will then be evaluated if he is fit to stand trial. The 73-yearold woman was attacked by an intruder on Friday 13 September at 10:45. She was hit over the head and in the face several times with an unknown object before the intruder fled the scene with her handbag, containing her wallet, identity document and several other personal belongings. She was transferred to a hospital in Somerset West in a serious, but stable condition. She is still recuperating in hospital at present. Somali shops looted in Stanford JANINE VAN DER RIET Foreign shops in Stanford are open for business as usual after an attack on various shops in the area. Six arrests have been made and cases of burglary and public violence were opened after members of the community became aggressive on Tuesday, 17 September. Warrant Officer Sarena Hugo, spokesperson for Stanford SAPS, says the situation in the area is closely monitored and the Somaliowned shops are open again after community members looted most of the products in their shops. The first fight broke out at 18:20 on 17 September at a Somali shop in Mundil Street after a member of the community allegedly tried to leave the shop with an apple and a

banana without paying for these items. According to Hugo, a group of Somalians then assaulted the person by hitting him. The person left the scene and returned a while later with a knife. He was apparently under the influence of alcohol and the Somalian shopkeepers assaulted him again. This time he was stabbed in the upper body. This caused a small group of community members to become unruly. They then forced open a shop in Mundil Street, looted it, taking cash and various products. Two more foreign-owned shops, situated in Tolbos Street and Dreyer Street, were forced open and looted. Members of the Stanford SAPS were called in for back-up and the situation was brought under control. Several witnesses came forward and identified some of the suspects.

’Vorige beleid was onbillik’ Vervolg van bl.1: By Fynbospark is daar 148 wooneenhede en 19 vullisdromme wat een keer per week leeggemaak word. Die vullisverwyderingstarief is voorheen bereken volgens die aantal dromme by elke kompleks, teen R129 per vullisdrom. Die kompleks se rekening was dus R2 451 per maand vir al 148 eenhede. Dit het neergekom op R16,56 per wooneenheid. Jurie Hamman is die trustee vir die administrasie en finansies in die raad van Fynbospark se regspersoon. Tydens sy aanbieding aan die inwoners het hy gesê hy en die munisipale amptenare, insluitend die burgemeester, het nie by dieselfde skool skoolgegaan nie. “Ek en die burgemeester het duidelik nie dieselfde onderwyser gehad wat my geleer lees en leer somme maak het nie.” Hamman het gesê die rekening vir Fynbospark se 148 eenhede het ná die verhoging gestyg van R2 451 tot R20 720 per maand – en van R29 412 die vorige jaar tot R248 640 per jaar. “Die berekening word nou per wooneenheid, waarvan daar 148 is, gedoen en nie meer per vullisdrom nie, waarvan daar nog steeds net 19 is. Die inwoners betaal nou elkeen R140 per maand vir dieselfde diens wat hulle voorheen net R16,56 gekos het. Dit beteken ’n verhoging in inkomste vir die OM van 745,4%,” het Hamman gesê. Botha-Guthrie het dit duidelik gestel dat

vorige beleid voorsiening gemaak het dat individuele woonerwe vir ’n volledige diens betaal, terwyl die beheerliggaam van deeltitelen gebruiksregeenhede slegs globaal aangeslaan is. “Soos ek voorheen genoem het, was die bepalings van die beleid onbillik en moes hersien word.” Sy het verder verduidelik dat die besluit nie ligtelik geneem is nie en baie opsies is oorweeg, maar aan die einde van die dag het die departement finansieel nie gelyk gebreek nie. Groenewald het ook onder skerp tonge deurgeloop en sy kundigheid as munisipale bestuurder is bevraagteken. ’n Inwoner het hom pertinent gevra of hy wiskunde op skool gehad het, waarop hy die inwoner met ’n teenvraag geantwoord het oor haar agtergrond en kennis op die spesifieke vakgebied. Sy het uit die vertrek gestorm. Na ’n politieke betoog deur ’n inwoner, het Groenewald gesê hy is nie ’n politikus nie. “Ek is ’n professionele amptenaar met meer as 38 jaar se ervaring in plaaslike regering.” In sy verduideliking oor die vullisverwydering-aanslag per wooneenheid het Groenewald gesê: “Byvoorbeeld, daar is twee ontwikkelings langs mekaar gebou. Elke individuele wooneenheid in die een kompleks moet die volle bedrag vir die diens betaal terwyl die beheerliggaam van die deeltitelen gebruiksregeenhede langsaan minder betaal, met ander woorde per drom en nie per een-

heid nie. Altwee ontvang dieselfde diens, maar die een buurman betaal meer as die ander een.” Hamman se reaksie was dat Groenewald “duidelik nie die verskil tussen vol- en deeltitel verstaan of wil verstaan nie”. Botha-Guthrie het verder gesê die maandelikse tarief is van toepassing op elke residensiële eenheid, wat verwys na ’n erf, woonstel, meenthuis, groepsontwikkeling, aftreeontwikkeling, ens. “Die basis van berekeninge het dus verander en die aantal dromme is nie van toepassing nie.” Tydens die vergadering is die aanbod gemaak dat inwoners vir deernishulp kan aansoek doen. Terwyl die helfte van die mense in die saal reeds tydens Botha-Guthrie en Groenewald se laaste kommentaar op die onderwerp uitgeloop het, het Hamman ten einde laaste die OM gevra om die beleid te verander of te skrap. Botha-Guthrie het na afloop van die vergadering gesê dat die aangeleentheid tydens die nuwe ronde begrotingsvergaderings van volgende jaar weer bespreek sal word, om moontlike oplossings vir die nuwe finansiële siklus te probeer vind. Hamman sê dit is jammer die munisipaliteit sien nie sy weg oop om verder na ’n oplossing vir dié jaar te soek nie. “Ons word nou ongelukkig gedwing om die saak te eskaleer en gaan die politieke pad by provinsiaal (sic) sowel as regsaksie neem.”

Quick thinking saves struggling swimmer KERRY VAN RENSBURG A teenager who jumped off Piet se Klip on Tuesday 24 September had to be rescued after the cold water and rough conditions got the better of him. Sylvia Taylor says she was taking photos of this area in front of Bientang’s Cave at 14:35 when she noticed two young guys jump off Piet se Klip. “They swam about 20 to 30 m in the direction of Voëlklip and my first thought was that the water was extremely cold with a large swell,” explains Taylor. “I got worried when I saw where they were planning on trying to exit the water. Having completed various sea rescue courses, my instinct was to take precautionary measures in the

event of them getting into trouble.” Taylor fetched the life ring that hangs in the restaurant, and as she got down the stairs, one teenager started shouting for help and waving his arms. “As they tried to exit, the waves kept pulling them back andsuckingthemunderwater. The stronger swimmer managed to climb up onto the rock shelf, but his friend was near drowning as he kept getting sucked back and under the water,” says Taylor. A guest at Bientang’s Cave and a young local known to her only as Michael, helped Taylor to throw out the life ring and pull the swimmer to

safety. Taylor says the youngster was shaken and almost hypothermic when he exited the water, but otherwise unharmed.

Zip line sign and structure queried KERRY VAN RENSBURG “Can someone please explain who gave SA Forest Adventures permission to not only bolt their unsightly zip line onto the seafront rocks, but also have the cheek to prohibit public access beyond it, now that a “trespassers will be prosecuted” sign has been put up. Since when do they own the rocks along the seafront? ” This message was sent to the Hermanus Times mobi site by a resident of Hermanus who says over the past 15 years, she has often sat on the rocks where the zip line structure is situated in the Old Harbour. “I call it my office,” she said this week when she brought in a photograph of the sign and structure. “Now when you want to watch whales, this is what you get.” She says the sign is “rude” and asks: “How can an independent company suddenly erect a sign that essentially makes it look like the seafront is its private property?” The sign, put up by SA Forest Adventures reads: “No access beyond this point. Trespassers will be prosecuted.” She also wants to know whether the zip line is now a permanent feature. The zip line which starts at Gearing’s Point and runs across the Old Harbour to the finish point on the rocks near the Old Harbour Museum, was put up in April this year for the Good Hope FM Adventure Race which was organised by SA Forest Adventures. The zip line was also a major attraction during the recent Hermanus Whale Festival. Clinton Lerm, owner of SA Forest Adventures, the company that erected and operates the Old Harbour zip line says: “Hundreds of locals and visitors alike have enjoyed the zip line and we have had tremendous support. “The signage was placed on the structure

This is just good business practice.” “The person obviously did not read clearly or did not interpret the full meaning of the sign as we do not, at any stage, prevent people from sitting anywhere along the rocks, except if they move in the line of the structure.” Lerm says: “We have obtained permission from the Old Harbour to have the structure in place for the event. Much-needed funds are also generated for the Old Harbour, as well as increasing the number of visitors to our beautiful harbour and museum.” Lerm says they were able to employ an additional five previously unemployed staff to operate the zip line and they also sponsored a number of under privileged children so that they could experience an activity they might never have had an opportunity to enjoy otherwise. “We use the zip line only during events and festivals,” says Lerm.

A resident photographed the sign on the zip line structure at the Old Harbour, complaining that it is offensive. “We will be removing it, as it is a temporary structure, until the next event.” Elizabeth du Toit, manager of the Old Harbour Museum says the proposal for a zip line was perused very carefully by the Board of Trustees of the Old Harbour Museum to whom the property belongs, and permission was given for putting up the zip line. “It is not a permanent fixture but has to be taken down twice a year to confirm this. The anchor structure is above the high water mark so it is on museum property,” explains Du Toit.

She says the signage has not been approved by the museum and instructions were given to the owner to discuss it with the museum so that the wording can be changed to include only the area where the zip line is anchored for the safety of visitors so they don’t trip over the anchor cables or fiddle with the structure. The colour of the sign will also be changed to a muted grey/brown so as not to stand out. Du Toit says the zip line is an attraction for younger and more adventurous people to the area. A percentage of the income from the zip line goes to the museum, as is the case with the kayaks.

Dennis Worrall to provide economic insight at open meeting The speaker at the U3A’s open meeting on Thursday 10 October at 17:30 will be Dr Dennis Worrall. He will address members on a critical question: How does South Africa rate in terms of an economically emboldened Africa? Dr Worrall is a business leader and academic with extensive experience on multiple continents, and more specifically for the purpose of this talk, in Africa. He was a founder, and subsequently coleader, of the Democratic Party. For this role he was eminently suited as he is a political scientist and lawyer by training. Dr Worrall has taught at universities in South Africa, Nigeria and the USA and edited the first general textbook on the South African government and politics. As a businessman he has been equally successful: he has managed Omega Investment Research (Pty) Ltd and a UK-registered company by the same name, he was the former Vice Chairman of the International Bank of Southern Africa, Managing Director of D.O.C. Finance South Africa (Pty) Ltd, former Chairman of Australian mining company Crown Diamonds N.L., a director of various private companies, a consultant to the World Bank (Ghana Gateway Project) and

several multinational corporations. The economy of South Africa is the largest in Africa, accounts for 24% of its gross domestic product in terms of purchasing power, and is ranked as an upper-middle income economy by the World Bank. The country continues to position itself as a ‘gateway’ to Africa for emerging powers around the world. Closer to reality are, perhaps, projections that show that South Africa’s growth over the next decades will be far slower than that of other countries on the African continent. The South African government considers the high levels of unemployment and inequality to be the most salient economic problems facing the country. These issues, and others like crime, the weak monetary unit, a weaker growth potential for expanding markets and slow economic growth have hurt investment. Crime, for instance, is considered a major constraint to invest by 30% of enterprises in South Africa. Annual helicopter whale survey starting soon Due to sponsorship by PetroSA, the Mammal Research Institute Whale Unit of the University of Pretoria will be able to conduct their annual helicopter survey of the southern right whale population during the first two to three weeks of October. This survey will be carried out westwards from Nature’s Valley, which is along the Garden Route, all the way to Muizenberg, and is the 35th in a series of surveys that have been carried out annually since 1979. The survey is conducted some 500 to 800 m offshore and all encountered southern right whales and other whale species are recorded. Groups of southern right

whales comprising a cow and calf pair are photographed with images of both the heads and the backs of the animals being taken, as individuals can be recognised from the patterns of the wart-like callosities on their heads and in some cases from the pigmentation patterns on their backs. Identification photography of such groups usually takes less than five minutes per group during which the helicopter hovers some 150 m (500 ft) above the whales. All surveying is carried out under a permit from the Department of Environmental Affairs to approach whales and under specific Marine Protected Area

permits from conservation authorities. Weather plays an important part in achieving the full survey coverage, so flying may need to be carried out over weekends. After the survey the collected identification photographs are filtered to select the best images of each encountered individual and these are compared to the Whale Unit’s catalogue of identification photographs from previous surveys. Comparisons are initially done using a computer-based image recognition system, which is followed by matching by eye. The Whale Unit now has

some 1 300 recognisable cows on file and about 3 000 re-sightings of them (some individuals have obviously been re-sighted multiple times!), allowing for the movements and distributions of individuals to be investigated and their reproductive histories to be analysed. These analyses provide a suite of information on the vital parameters of the population, including abundance, growth, survival, calving intervals and age at first parturition (age at which a female calf first returns with her calf), which are used to model the population for trends in numbers and reproductive performance over time.

Wine auction for school funds Last year Camphill School’s wine auction, held in Durbanville, was such a memorable event that the School will be doing it all over again on Wednesday 9 October – this time closer to home, at the Hathersage Wine Estate in Somerset West. Last year’s auction raised just under R300 000. All the funds were used for the benefit of the pupils at Camphill School. In early 2012 Camphill

School was under threat of closure for lack of funds and, with the help of events such as the wine auction and the generous support they have received from friends, both far and near, the school has emerged stronger and more energised than ever before. Thanks to the funds the school was able to raise last year, a kindergarten class has been added, as well as a number of extra facilities for the children, like a com-

puter lab and additional therapy options. This year’s auction will feature premium quality, rare and vintage wines from some of the top wineries in the Western Cape, not least from our very own Walker Bay region. Pippie – ‘A nation’s inspiration’

KERRY VAN RENSBURG The whole world knows who Pippie is. She is the little South African girl who sustained third-degree burns to more than 80 percent of her body, after the gel firelighter her father Erwin Kruger was using to light a braai for their family’s New Year’s Eve celebrations, exploded. No doctor thought Pippie would live. She endured 50 operations in six months, and survived. This journey of survival as experienced by Pippie’s mother, Anice Kruger, has been woven into a gripping and heart-wrenching book written by former editor of Finweek and first time author Colleen

Naudé. Now living in Hermanus, with her husband Charles Naudé, former editor of Sake24, Colleen says she followed the story of Pippie in the press and realised there was a deeper story that needed to be told that was beyond a news report. She says Pippie’s case was ground-breaking from a medical point of view and even though she did not know Anice Kruger or any of her family, she eventually made contact with her. “When I first saw this child whimpering and lying stiff as a ruler with no recognition in her eyes, I started crying,” says Colleen of her first encounter with Pippie. Colleen’s book Pippie was built around intensive interviews with Anice, Erwin, the grandparents, as

well as six doctors and eight therapists. The story is told through Anica’s eyes and most of her tale was recorded month by month on a dictaphone. Colleen used the transcriptions as the basis for the manuscript. Colleen says Anice was able to pour out her heart in this way, which in itself was a therapy for the mother who refused to give up on her sick child. Pippie, published by CUM, was the best seller in the country (number 1 on Nielsen Bookscan) in the first week of September, two weeks after it was launched in Johannesburg on 13 August. “I do not want to make money out of these people’s pain,” Colleen stresses, “therefore 85% of my royalties will be paid into the fund that

was established to help cover Pippie’s medical expenses, now and in future.” Pippie is a story about faith, hope and a miracle that is still unfolding. The impact that this little girl has had on everyone who has been a part of her journey is perhaps best summed up by Dr Ridwan Mia, the plastic and reconstructive surgeon who performed the ground-breaking skin transplant, who said: “Pippie, you came to us in a desperate state, seeking our help. Who would have thought that you would be the source of our enlightenment, the reason we are all united, and a nation’s inspiration. Little one, you have changed the face of medicine in South Africa and your fighting spirit makes us all proud.”

Magriet Vorster Botha is ’n interessante vrou wat destyds die land se eerste vroue stasiebevelvoerder was en die afgelope jare haar passie vir kuns uitleef aan huis in Onrus. Een van haar vriende het laat weet sy doen wonderlike kunswerke en ons moet by haar gaan inloer. Met die ontmoetslag is dit duidelik dat sy van presiesheid hou. Magriet maak haar voordeur oop met een van drie chiwawahondjies in die een hand, ’n sigaret in die ander en in ’n diep rasperstem berispe sy my met “jy’s laat”. Hierdie presiesheid kom ook in die detail van haar kunswerke voor wat oral uitgestal is. Ons geselsie loop etlike kinkels en sy vertel eers oor haar loopbaan in die polisie. Sy wys sowat 20 koerantberigte oor haar prestasies in die polisie van destyds, asook die oorspronklike brief van die destydse Burgemeester van Randfontein wat haar met haar bevordering as eerste vroue stasiebevelvoerder persoonlik gelukgewens het. Sedert sy uit die polisie getree het, woon sy die afgelope 13 jaar in Onrus, waar sy haarself as kunstenaar uitleef. Hoewel Magriet nou en dan met die kwas

Volgens Magriet verwar baie mense naaldskilder met tapisserie en lê sy klem daarop dat dit glad nie dieselfde is nie. “Tapisserie is wanneer jou patroon klaar vir jou gedruk is en jy werk eenvoudig daarop, waar naaldskilder is wanneer jy jou skets self doen. Met ander woorde jy maak ’n skets op lap en begin dit dan met wol of gare te ryg.” Een van haar olieverfskilderye is ’n donkie wat tussen twee ou witgekalkte mure staan en

wag. Dit is treffend. Sy kyk ’n wyle na die skildery en haar oë skiet vol trane. “Dis my Jesus-donkie, hy staan en wag vir Hom”. Sy vertel verder. “My man, Gideon, was ook in die polisie. Ons is in 1996 geskei en ek het hom vroeër vanjaar begrawe. Na al hierdie jare was dit die eerste keer wat ek régtig van hom kon afskeid neem. Ek het teruggekom van Johannesburg af waar die verassingsdiens was, en het toe dié ‘Jesus-donkie’ gedoen.” Die volgende oomblik laat waai Magriet se papegaai, sy naam is Plooi, met “gaan ***”, en die gesprek volg weer ’n ander kinkel. Plooi se bloutaal breek so effe die hartseer atmosfeer. “Hy praat heeldag so met die hondjies ook,” lag Magriet. “In die aand sê hy gewoonlik ook vir die hondjies ‘gaan piepie en poo’, want dis wat ek gewoonlik vir hulle sê voor ons gaan slaap.”. Magriet se kunswerke is besonders, detailed en realisties. Fresh back from an exhibition in New York, Niël Jonker is showing a selection of landscape oil paintings he sketched on site along the Hudson River and Cen-

tral Park. He tipped the hat to America’s founding painters who formed the Hudson River School of painting in the early and mideighteenth century by visiting several of the exact sites where they worked. The outing is child and pet friendly. The Art Route is open Saturday and Sunday from 10:00–17:00.

A NOVEL OF ZELDA FITZ GERALD by Therese Anne Fowler. She was dubbed “the first flapper” and was the wife and muse to F. Scott Fitz gerald of The Great Gatsby fame. The backdrop is the Roaring Twenties and tells the story of Zelda who lived large, always struggling to find her own identity in the shadow of her cele brated husband.

Rossouw Modern art gallery will host Jenny Jackson’s second solo exhibition titled Off the Wall, to run from Friday 11 October to 17 October. Jenny’s first solo show, Spring has Sprung, was also hosted by the gallery in September last year. Since then she has developed her unique style even further, says gallery owner Joshua Rossouw. He describes the collection of deconstructed works as largely influ-

enced by old roman and medieval wall frescoes which have suffered damage and renovations over the centuries. “Jenny constantly discovers new challenges, and with this added technique she adds a mysterious and subtle quality to her work,” says Rossouw. “Paint that’s applied thickly on the canvas is chipped away again once dried, often more than once, giving life to new forms discovered,

yet her relationship with her subject and her viewer remains constant, as does her colour palette.” There is no stopping this 79-yearold artist who keeps her brushes and canvasses very busy. All art appreciators and collectors are invited to a preview and hanging party on 10 October from 15:00. The exhibition which will be officially opened by Patrick Chapman on 11 October at 19:00.

In 1992 Jörg was joined by Fransien Koegelenberg who currently owns the shop. Ek bepleit nie ’n vals gevoel van sekuriteit nie. Natuurlik ervaar ons misdaad – hoofsaaklik in die vorm van huisbraak en diefstal. Onveilig? Nee. Beleggers word afgeskrik deur stories soos Kleinmond wat onveilig is. Die een wat dié storie help versprei dien nie die waarheid nie. Ons wat weekliks met misdaadsyfers te doen het deel nie die sentiment dat Kleinmond onveilig is nie. Ek doen ’n beroep op eerlike verslaggewing. Ek soek integriteit.

Well, well, well done to the organisers and management of the Two Oceans Whale Festival, to do this “Big Thing” with so few problems and mistakes was absolutely brilliant. It was well planned and laid out. The choices of entertainment (especially the music) was so much better than before and made this festival a real pleasure.

It is to be hoped that we will have the opportunity to exhibit the sculptures of other top sculptors in our town for the benefit of Hermanus, its residents and visitors. Sculptor Dylan Lewis responds: “By contemplating the changed landscape throughout the ‘dead eyes’ of these endangered animals, the figures confront the literal and psychological meaning of the ecological destructions we humans have wrought on the environment. “It is precisely because we are so disconnected from our original relationship to the natural world that we continue to destroy those aspects of the environment that are no longer meaningfully connected to us. The nakedness of the figures relates to man’s natural state and I am able to use the entire body surface to convey the force of raw and natural emotion. “Furthermore, I believe extreme points of view are necessary to stimulate debate and allow us as individuals to form or adjust our own opinions.”

With this, also a well done and thank you to the authorities (police, security companies, traffic department and municipality) for a job done better than ever before because if we feel safe and well organised, we can enjoy the festival much more. Stick to this recipe and the Whale Festival will have a long successful future.

‘Piet se Klip is open to everyone at all times’ In response to the complaint re “Piet se Klip” by “Anonymous”, page 13, Hermanus Times 19 September, I should like to comment as follows: Though it does not really come as a surprise, the continued harassment of people venturing onto Piet se Klip by Giangi Negra of Bientang’s Cave Restaurant is a smack in the face of both the general public and the local authorities. For more than three years now this debate has flared up repeatedly, with Negra first casting concrete on our cliffs, and subsequently chasing locals and visitors away by asserting that this piece of land, to which access was ostensibly prohibited, was either a special reserve, his private property or under his custody, none of which is true. What is worse, is that the Overstrand Municipality endorsed his crusade by allowing him to erect a sign (that fortunately disappeared) proclaiming this to be such a no-go zone, and though proven wrong, still clearly made little or no effort to correct this. In his response to the article referred to

above (same page), Neville Green, manager biodiversity, Overstrand, reiterates what should have been common knowledge to Council and what they should have enforced from the very beginning, namely that Negra is in contravention of the Act(s) in question on all accounts, period. Why then does the municipality not put an end to this? What tenure does he have that is not open for review when his conduct requires action, I wonder? After the extensive exchange of letters on the very same issue last year, I do not even want to ratify Negra’s pseudo-conservationist rhetoric by a response to same, but simply remind the public that Piet se Klip is open to everyone at all times and request Council again to please call Negra to order. Call the authorities if you must and file a public nuisance charge. And there is no need to remain anonymous when having to adjust such high-handed behaviour. As to the letter by Mr Templer in support of Negra (HT 26.09.2013, page 12), may I suggest he acquires some understanding of

Were it not for the contribution SA’s wildlife makes to our GDP through tourism, we would have very few nature reserves, might well be faced with whale harvesting again, and Bientang’s would certainly not be the gold mine it clearly is.

Maar dit beteken ook dat warm lug aan die kom is, en alweer besig is om klammigheid die lug in te trek. So lyk dit vandag omtrent oor die hele Overberg. Waar mense eendjies in die tuin het, word die slakke vir hulle geoes. Ons sien gister ’n mistigheid soos die bietjie hitte in die lug die koue van die see af intrek om wolke, skaars 200 m bo ons koppe, te skep. Met opstaantyd vandag (Donderdag) sien ons die lug is heelwat dikker. Dit is ’n frontjie wat suidoos van Walkerbaai verby trek. Vrydagoggend dieselfde tyd val ’n bietjie van dié vog (so 1 mm) weer terug. Die volgende fase in die bolug is tans onseker. Ons weertoring op Hermanusberg het vroeg verlede week die gees gegee en sal seker nog ’n week in die doderyk wees. Die naaste lesings wat ons kan verskaf, is vanaf I-weather se toring buite Bettiesbaai ... Wat vir ons hierdie naweek wag, is beslis nie die heerlike sonskyn, walviskyk en sommer net sonsit soos verlede Sondag toe Hermanus sy beste self aan die toeristewêreld vertoon het nie. Die nattigheid oor die Overstrand en omliggende gebiede wat Vrydagaand ná 7de Laan begin, hou tot Saterdagmiddag aan. Die meeste daarvan word uit die verbygaande frontjie vanuit die suid-

ooste ingesuig en die lae wolke bly met die bietjie neerslag met ons. Ons sien wel ’n bietjie son, maar van rondsit en in die son bak soos verlede week, kom niks. Die koue wyk eenvoudig nie van die grond af op soos dit moet nie. So sit ons die hele dag met tussen 13 en 16 ºC, truie aan en truie uit. Warm komberse bly op die bed. Ons rekenaars wys dat die son die wolke teen Maandag klop en tot Woensdag baie doen om die grond uit te droog voor die noordwestewind weer inklim en wolke indra wat hy in die see wes van die land opgesuig het. In die geheel is die prentjie duidelik dat lente vanjaar nie heeltemal is wat hy behoort te wees nie. Maar dan, sê oom Langfaan, kan dit ook nie anders nie. Party mense voer slakke vir hul eendjies. Ander gooi gif. En die slim mense se satelliete kom maak hul brandstoftenks oor die land skoon. Moeder Natuur sal nooit weer dieselfde wees nie.

SAPS embraces diversity KERRY VAN RENSBURG Uniforms were ditched for traditional outfits and instead of a quick bite to eat on the run, a table laden with delicious cultural dishes was set. This heritage celebration took place at the Hermanus Police Station on Wednesday 25 September in between official police work. The aroma of something good cooking in the kitchen was evident in the police station, and while waiting for the food to be served, Colonel Phumzile Cetyana, Hermanus cluster commander, explained that the aim of the celebration was to “embrace our

diversity”. He said the day was organised in line with Heritage Month by the station’s Women’s Network and Men for Change. “As part of this, we planted three trees at the Provincial Hospital today. We want those trees to be a mark of our appreciation and serve as a beacon of hope for ill people,” said Cetyana. Colonel Nomana Adonis, the Hermanus station commander, dressed in her traditional outfit, said the heritage celebration menu, which included samp and stew, breyani and bobotie, was prepared by the station’s staff members.

recommends that municipalities publish information on the quality of drinking water supplied to consumers as well as waste water effluent quality results every six months. Water quality is measured against code 0241 set by the South African National Standards (SANS) for drinking water. SANS’s Class I standards can be regarded as the ideal quality for drinking water, while SANS Class II water can still be regarded as fit for human consumption, but with the proviso that it should be attended to over the long term. On the accompanying drinking water quality table the average scores attained by Overstrand Municipality’s eight water schemes over the past four months can be seen.Water samples are collected monthly from 55 points and sent to accredited laboratories for analysis. Thirteen different bacteriological, chemical and physical parameters are measured regularly. Overstrand Municipality’s water quality is of an outstanding quality, with 98% of the average results complying with Class I standards, a further 1% with Class II, and only a 1% aesthetic parameter falling outside the Class II standard. Upgrades currently being planned or already in process include the Preekstoel water purification works in Hermanus, a new water purification plant at Baardskeerdersbos and the commissioning of new boreholes at Hermanus. When the drinking water quality does not comply with SANS 0241, corrections are made at the water purification works or in the reticulation network. The drinking water quality is then retested against the SANS 0241 limits for compliance. The drinking water quality table includes all samples tested, including the samples that did not comply with SANS 0241 during the three month period.

Last chance for death row dogs JANINE VAN DER RIET The kennels at the Hermanus Animal Welfare (HAWS) are filled to capacity, with nine dogs currently on death row as they constantly having to make room for new arrivals and adoptions are very slow.

This husky from Hermanus was never claimed by his owners. Now, a few months later, he has a loving new owner in Jo hannesburg.

Until 15 October you will have the opportunity to adopt one of the wonderful cats and dogs from HAWS at a reduced rate of R350 per animal. There are currently 60-70 dogs and pups in the kennels to choose from. The price includes sterilisation and the first vaccinations. Bernard de Necker, a businessman from Hermanus, together with Kolie and Natasha Nel, opened a PetProject depot for the Overstrand region. De Necker said PetProject will sponsor a 20 kg bag of pet food to each of the nine dogs on death row once they are adopted. Petproject is situated in Mitchell Street, next to Kekkel en Kraai. Matilda is a medium collie cross female with lots of energy and character. She mixes with other dogs and loves to play ball. She is now looking for a place to call home.

Katie is a small/me dium cross breed rescued from a neg lected home. She has interesting amber eyes and is a very loveable girl. She is affectionate and en joys a cuddle.

Gracie is very energetic who likes to go for her walks and needs a caring home to settle down.

Unclaimed husky finds great new home JANINE VAN DER RIET Remember the beautiful male husky that was found in August in Sandbaai, but was never claimed by his original owners? (Hermanus Times 2013/08/22). He recently flew off to Johannesburg with the compliments of Watershed Rescue, all the way to a new owner who knows the breed very

well. Judy Miller from the Hermanus Animal Welfare Society (HAWS) says he is as happy as a lark at his new home. He even gets to drive in a fancy sports car thanks to his new owner. Such a great ending, says Miller, super excited about the brand new happy life ahead for this very special husky.

Marley is very petite with a soft nature. He mixes well with other dogs but is still a bit hesitant around peo ple. He is naturally af fectionate and walks well on a lead. He will be a good companion and an alert dog for his new owner.

Hitti is a fox terrier that was signed off by the owner and had a best friend who left her behind when he went away. Now this intelligent and lovable girl is looking for a new friend and home.

Kato is a black me dium size Belgium Shephard cross. He mixes freely with other dogs and is an affectionate boy who enjoys his walks and is also good with cats.

Rudi is friendly but was very neglected. He was brought in by Law Enforcement. He is super affection ate and doesn’t look aggressive but he has not mixed with other dogs yet. He loves to play ball games as well.

Honey is affectionate and gives everyone a highfive greeting. She was brought in with a ripped neck. She has recovered now and just loves people and walks, but is wary of most dogs. She has had a male dog friend.

Flocking good fun in Stanford Saturday 5 October is Flocktober Festival time in Stanford. From 10:00 there is a programme jam-packed with activities for the entire family. Triton 4x4-bakkie ’n aansienlike hupstoot gekry wat krag en wringkrag betref. In ooreenstemming met globale omgewingsneigings is die verplasing van die tussenverkoelde turbodieselenjin van 3,2 F tot 2,5 F verminder. Desnieteenstaande is die enjinkrag met 9% verhoog van 120 kW tot 131 kW en die maksimumwringkrag met 17% van 343 Nm tot ’n massiewe 400 Nm. Die 4x4-stelsel, wat homself al oor die strafste terrein bewys het, is ook opgegradeer. In normale omstandighede is drywing via die agterwiele, maar die Triton-Dubbelkajuit 4x4 kry nou ’n sluitbare middelewenaar plus skakeling in die ry. Die bestuurder kan, sonder dat die ewenaar gesluit is, van die standaard-4x2-modus (vir brandstofekonomie) na 4H oorskakel tot by snelhede van 100 km/h. Dit vul die sluitbare agterewenaar en die laagstrekratkas aan. Al hierdie stelsels gee aan die Triton 4x4 ’n ongeëwenaarde vermoë in die veld.

Die vierwieldryfstelsel word beheer deur Mitsubishi se super selectstelsel, wat die bestuurder ’n keuse tussen vier verskillende oordragmodusse gee, afhangende van die terrein, en die modusse kan in die ry geskakel word. Die bougehalte is tipies van die Japanse handelsmerk en selfs oor die strafste terrein is die kajuit stil en ratelvry. Van die nuwe spesifikasies vir die dubbelkajuit sluit in enkelsone-klimaatbeheer, herhaalflikkerliggies in die kantspieëls, nuwe allooiwiele, opgegradeerde skyfremme voor en remtrommels agter, ’n nuwe sierrooster en voorbuffer en kleurgepaste wielboë. Wat die kajuit betref, sluit die Triton hom nou aan by die geledere van

luukse-dubbelkajuitbakkies. Leersitplekke, klimaatbeheer en uitstekende klank-insulering maak lang ritte ’n plesier. Snelheidsbeheer en ’n driespeek-leerstuurwiel met veelfunksieskakelaars vir die klankstelsel, snelheidsbeheer en Bluetooth bring die Triton op een vlak met die ander luukse voertuie in Mitsubishi se produkreeks. Die Mitsubishi Link-stelsel, wat stembeheer van die stelsel moontlik maak, is ook standaard. Dit sluit aan by die veelinligtingvertoon, wat hoogte bo seevlak, temperatuur, brandstofverbruik en reikafstand aandui. En dan is daar ook ’n kompas. Die dubbelkajuit het steeds ’n vragvermoë van 1 000 kg – ’n volle ton – en ’n ruim laaibak met afmetings van 1 352 mm lank, 1 470 mm breed en 860 mm diep. Van die belangrike spesifikasieopgraderings vir die Club Cab sluit in Bluetooth, klank- en foonkontroles aan die stuurwiel, stembeheer vir die foon en die nuwe voorkant. Die Club Cab is net met dieselkrag verkrygbaar. Dit is in ooreenstemming met die vraag in die mark, waar meer as 85% van die modelle dieseleenhede is. Die Club Cab is nou ook verkrygbaar in ’n weergawe met opsionele agtersitplekke. Die Club Cab-reeks het ’n soortgelyke opgradering in standaardeienskappe as die dubbelkajuite gekry, behalwe dat hierdie modelle materiaalsitplekke het. Loopkoste speel deesdae ’n belangrike rol in koopbesluite. The 2013 Hermanus Santa Shoebox project was launched in September and currently the gift drive is 200 boxes short of its goal of presenting 567 children with a box of goodies. Should you wish to help make lots of little hearts happy this Christmas, the pledging closes on 24 October by which time you need to register as a donor on the web site, www.santashoebox.co.za, and choose a child. You then have the happy task of filling a box with gifts for your chosen child and drop off the gift-wrapped box either on 25 or 26 October at the Wine Village in Hemel & Aarde Village. “Last year, being our first in the area, we managed to distribute over 500 boxes to underprivileged and vulnerable children. This year we have a target of 567 and hope the Hermanus community will respond as before and pledge

to fill a box for a child,” says Wendie Cleary, Hermanus Santa Shoe Box coordinator. This is the project’s 7th annual gift drive and their national aim is 100 000 shoeboxes. It is an initiative of the Kidz2Kidz Trust, a registered public benefit (PBO 930031301) and non-profit organisation (NPO 102-098) with Section 18A status, that offers assistance to children in need. Gift boxes should preferably be filled with some necessities, such as toothpaste and toothbrush, facecloth and soap, as well as some sweets, educational supplies, a toy and an outfit of clothing, individually chosen and filled. “It is this personal touch that endears the project to adults and children from all communities,” says Cleary. New picturesque trail run through Stellenbosch farms Stellenbosch Athletics Club will host the Stellenbosch Farm Race, a new 10 km trail run, on 26 October at 08:00. The race starts and finishes on the Beau Joubert Wine Estate and is run entirely on the roads of five picturesque wine estates on the outskirts of Stellenbosch. The route meanders through vineyards and indigenous forests of neighbouring farms Karibib, Skoonheid, Stirling and Jordan Wine Estate. This is a challenging 10 km route. The total elevation gain is more than 300 meters with

two significant climbs. At the top of the hill is an old signal cannon dating back to the 1600s. The first male and female athlete passing the cannon will be crowned King and Queen of the Hill. This race is pre-entry only. Runners can enter online at www.entrytime.co.za. Online entries close on Monday 21 October. The entry fee is R70 and the temporary license fee is R30. The Hermanus Whale Festi val Mountain Bike Challenge which had its starting and finishing point at Curro Her manus, had routes to suit all fitness levels. Despite the chilly start, hundreds of cy clists lined up on Saturday morning to tackle the 55 km, 30 km and 15 km routes.

Atlanticrugbyklub sluit ligaseisoen met gemengde welslae af W.C.M. GIBSON Al drie spanne van Atlantic-rugbyklub het Dinsdag 24 September teen Villiersdorp gespeel. Die B- en C-span het albei gewen, maar die A-span het net-net verloor. Die A-span het 13-16 verloor, die B-span 19-0 gewen en die C-span het met 15-14 gewen. Villiersdorp se A-span het eerste met ’n strafskop geslaag om die telbord met 0-3 te open. Jerome Julies van Atlantic het op sy beurt met ’n strafskop die telling 3-3 gemaak. Rustyd het Villiersdorp 3-13 voorgeloop. Ná rustyd het Atlantic se Kevin Williams gedruk en Julies het die drie verdoel. Ná ’n geslaagde strafdoel was die telling 13-13. ’n Strafskop deur Villiersdorp het die telling in hul guns geswaai (13-16). Atlantic se B-span was eenvoudig net te sterk vir Villiersdorp. Die puntemakers was

Eddie Johnson (1 drie), Goodman Mbane (1 drie), Marcello Gillion (1 drie en 2 doelskoppe). Atlantic het die wedstryd 19-0 gewen. Villiersdorp se C-span het vroeg in die wedstryd met 6-0 voorgeloop waarna hy die wedstryd net-net met 15-14 gewen het. Die puntemakers was Colin Sauls (1 drie), Aldo Lukas (1 drie) en Herschel Vermaak (1 doelskop en 1 strafdoel). Atlantic se drie spanne het Saterdag 28 September teen Botrivier gespeel. Die A-span se telling was teen rustyd 7-7 waarna die wedstryd gestaak is omdat die skeidsregter nie as ervare genoeg geag is om vir ’n A-span te blaas nie. Die B-span het 3-10 verloor en die C-span het 7-11 verloor. Dié wedstryde was die laaste ligawedstryde vir die seisoen. Atlantic se A-span eindig op 49, B-span op 51 en die C-span op 69 ligapunte.
