Residents’ CBD wish list JANINE VAN DER RIET

The taxi rank is an eyesore, Market Square looks like Blikkiesdorp and the Old Harbour is a white elephant. When about 50 concerned and interested residents and business owners attended the public participation meeting where they had the opportunity to voice their CBD concerns, and ideas, they didn’t pull any punches. The meeting was held at the municipal auditorium on Thursday 27 November and follows on phase one of the revitalisation framework for the Hermanus CBD, which has already been completed. The meeting was conducted in a workshop format. Attendees were split into groups, handed a map of the CBD, and everyone had the opportunity to give their inputs for the next phase, ranking different landmarks in the CBD as assets, opportunities and problem areas and giving ideas on how areas can be improved. Proceedings were overseen by representatives from Deca Engineering (previously ICE Boland) and Gapp Architects, who were also involved in the completion of phase one, which included a total of 13 projects/interventions since 2000. After enthusiastic input, a spokesperson from each group then had the opportunity to share their ideas, which had a common thread. Taxi rank: All agreed that the taxi rank area was in serious need of upgrading as it was “an eyesore when entering town” and that it needed to be kept neat and

clean. One suggestion was to “sink” the taxi rank lower in the ground and build a development on top. Market Square: Concerns were raised about the stalls, referring to the area as Blikkiesdorp (Tin Town), selling imported goods. “These stalls don’t reflect the character of Hermanus at all. It should have a local look and feel, selling locally produced fare.” Others complained about the height of the stalls obscuring the sea view. Hoy’s Koppie: Seen by all as an asset offering loads of opportunity, but ideas were not plentiful. One idea was to install a cable car running from the koppie to the town. High Street: Some stakeholders suggested that High Street be converted to a walkway for pedestrians. Lemm’s Corner: One suggestion fancied by many was to move the historical (Oh Crumbs bakery) building to Lemm’s Corner, leaving the whole parking area to be developed. A section of Lemm’s Corner is currently undergoing an upgrade, with more workshops to be held on the way forward. (See article on page 4.) Old Harbour: Serious concerns were raised about the Old Harbour as a major asset but with nothing to offer. It was labelled a “white elephant”. Suggestions were made to uplift the area and recreate the old village life atmosphere, with fresh fish and other local produce on offer. Photo museum: Some said it was not inviting enough as a tourist attraction.

2 HermanusTimes Two people drowned on Saturday

Nuus News

4 December, 2014

The NSRI expressed its condolences to the family of a 12-year-old boy from Cape Town, who had drowned in the lagoon near Stanford on Saturday. The boy had gone missing in the Kleinrivier Lagoon at the Wortelgat Camp and Conference Centre, between Stanford and Voëlklip, on Saturday afternoon. The accident is alleged to have happened over lunch time when children from Khayelitsha and Langa, who were attending a Catholic Welfare Development Youth Group camp, had gone for a swim in the lagoon without the supervision of their youth group leaders. The canoe the boy had been in, had capsized. A police dive unit searching for the

missing boy, located and recovered the body of the 12-year-old on Sunday afternoon. The body of the child was handed to Forensic Pathology Services and police have opened an inquest docket. In the meantime a police dive unit is continuing a search at Kleinmond for a 20-year-old man that had gone missing, also on Saturday. The NSRI was called just before 18:00, where four local men in their early twenties were in the water at Kleinmond beach, when rip currents swept two of them out to sea. Their friends went after them, but only three managed to eventually get back to the shore. The fourth man continued

to be swept further out to sea, according to witnesses on the shore. An unidentified bystander, who also tried to rescue the victim, was unsuccessful and the victim disappeared under the water. Emergency Medical Rescue (EMR), the SA Police Services, a Western Cape Government Health EMS rescue squad and ambulance, the Red Cross AMS Skymed rescue helicopter and NSRI Hermanus launched an air, sea and shore search. but there was no sign of a missing man. He is presumed to have drowned. A police dive unit has been activated to continue an ongoing search operation and police have opened an investigation.

Werner se ma, Leatitia, sê: “Die bestuur van OK MiniMark het my onmiddellik gekontak en gesê my kind se fiets is so pas gesteel.

Dis great hier.” Volgens Rhyn Potgieter, bestuurder by die Onrusrivier-karavaanpark, was daar meer as 300 matrieks wat verlede naweek by dié karavaanpark gebly het. “Die bywoning was beslis beter as verlede jaar.

Astoria Centre sold for R23 m JAN-HENDRIK COETZER The Astoria Shopping Centre in Main Road has recently been sold to Sulnisa Property Administrators for R23 m. Earlier this year three bids were received during an auction process, two of R22,5 m and one of R19 m. But according to Cedric Greenwood from Rawson Auctions, the former owner rejected these bids because they originally wanted R25 m. The centre consists of 22 units and covers 2000 square metres of ground surface. The current tenant mix includes Old Mutual, Mi-

lady’s, American Swiss, Finbond Bank and Land-en-See. Tanya Jovanovski, franchisee for Rawson Auctions in the Western Cape, says that although the centre has been sold, the transfer has not yet gone through. “For this reason it will be premature to speculate on any future plans for the centre, but to my understanding everything will just carry on the same.” The new owner and group managing director of the Sulnisa Group, Rafick Dawood, is currently out of the country and was not available for comment.

‘Steering committee to assess’ From page 1.

This new struc ture next to Fisherman’s Cottage at Lemm’s Corner will include a water feature, herb and vege table garden and pergola.

Water feature for Lemm’s Corner JAN-HENDRIK COETZER As part of the first phase of the upgrading process at Lemm’s Corner, the Old Harbour Museum is putting up a new structure next to Fisherman’s Cottage to make it a more “sociable” area for residents and tourists. The building process is expected to be finished well before Christmas. The new structure will consist of a water feature, herb and vegetable garden and a wine pergola with seating underneath. According to the manager at the Old Harbour Museum, Elizabeth du Toit, the owners of Fisherman’s Cottage as well as museum staff will be the structure’s main managers. “Fisherman’s Cottage paid for the lintels used for the wine pergola. They will also plant and look after the herb and vegetable garden.” Du Toit says they had to move one of the trees, which was replanted next to the water feature.

“We were very careful when we replanted the Ficus Nitida tree. We also used steel plates to cover the tree’s roots in order to prevent them lifting the foundation of the water feature.” According to co-owner at Fisherman’s Cottage, Nicole Verhoogt, they are very exited about this upgrade. “The area underneath the pergola is going to be very relaxed. Instead of your typical tableand-chair seating we are going to arrange comfortable couches, to make it more of a ‘chill area’. Eventually we would like to put fish in the water, but we will first wait and see.” Du Toit says they have other projects planned for the rest of Lemm’s Corner. “I don’t want to say too much, because they are still in negotiation stages. As soon as we have enough funding we will start with the planning of the next phase. But for now I can confirm this new structure will definitely be finished before Christmas.”

Long Street: Almost everyone agreed that Long Street behind Pick n Pay is a pedestrian and traffic nightmare, with not a lot to offer. Suggestions made were to convert this area into a village-style mall, incorporating the old buildings. Other wish list items: – more sign postings / information boards. – to make better use of the parking area across from Rossi’s Restaurant. – more trees / greenery / soft areas. – more cycle routes and walkways – more public toilets – parking for tourist buses. – Offering a half hourly shuttle from Hawston to De Mond – entry to Mitchell Square (parking) from the bypass road at the taxi rank. Riaan Kuchar, manager of town planning and property administration at the Overstrand Municipality, said the way for-

ward, after all the suggestions at the workshop are taken into consideration, will be to nominate a steering committee who will work with a technical team to assess what is possible for phase two. ) Projects completed by the Overstrand Municipality in terms of the 2002 study phase one include: CBD Relief Road, upgrade of Cliff Top, redevelopment of Market Square, Gearing’s Point upgrade, development of the Station Precinct. These projects were implemented by the municipality between 2002 and 2012 at an estimated cost of R80 million. Kuchar also mentioned that the private sector has already invested substantially in the CBD Revitalisation Strategy. This includes construction on commercial, residential, parking and landscaping projects to an estimated value of R225 million. ) Any person wanting to submit more inputs can send an email to rkuchar@overstrand.gov.za.

Man dood ná fietsongeluk JANINE VAN DER RIET ’n Vier-en-dertigjarige man is Maandagoggend dood nadat hy met sy fiets teen ’n motor vasgery het.

Groups of friends gather for coffee after walking their dogs on the VOS path.

Coffee on the run Walkers and joggers on the VOS path can now make a stop at Davies Pool in Onrus where Karen Poole is on standby to give you your daily caffeine fix. The brains behind Coffee@Davies Pool is Debra Roodt (Karen’s daughter), who came up with the idea about two and a half years ago when they moved here from Cape Town. “But life got in the way and having two children in two years kept me very busy. When I started walking and running again on the VOS path I was still looking for a place to get a cup of coffee afterwards, but before 09:00.” Debra approached the municipality about trading by the sea. “They were very open to my idea and I put together a motivation. Within a month I had approval to trade at Davies Pool,” says Debra. They then set about working with the campsite and municipal electrical department to obtain a power source for the trailer (built by local supplier Exclusive Steel Works), and with the help of Michael from The Beanery, put together the final touches. All she needed was someone to run the stall and after many discussions with her mom, Karen decided to leave her job running a game lodge, to ‘man’ the kiosk. “Although the campsite has a kiosk, they are also happy we are there to serve their customers with coffee and milk shakes,” says Debra. Coffee@Davies Pool offers flat whites, americanos, espresso, milk shakes, hot chocolate, tea, ice cream cones and fresh crunchie oat biscuits. They are open daily (except Mondays) between 07:30 and (round about) 17:00, depending on the weather.

The Zwelihle swimming pool after it opened on Monday. A visitor who wanted to swim there in the morning made a Uturn, saying the water was too dirty. (This photo was taken on Monday after noon). PHOTO: ELBÉ VAN HEERDEN

Dust and bags put a damper on tourists’ pool outing ELBÉ VAN HEERDEN Looking for a pool to swim lengths in, the owner of a guest house in Sandbaai suggested to her British visitors to try the Olympic-sized swimming pool in Zwelihle. According to Angelique Brink from Sandbaai Country House, her guests returned shortly after their outing, exclaiming shock at the state of the pool, saying their is no way they will swim in it. “The pool was in a terrible state - the bottom was black and plastic bags were floating about,” the guests told Brink. “If I had known how it looks I would definitely not have sent them there,” said Brink. “These tourists have been travelling through Africa for the last six months and are not finicky. They said that they usually swim for half an hour every day, wherever they are,” she said. The municipal pools opened for the summer season on Monday morning. According to the supervisor, Wendell Poole, they have two permanent workers and 12 casual employees who clean the pool daily. “Over the weekend, dust and plastic bags had blown in. We started cleaning this morning (Monday) when we opened.” Don Kearney the senior manager: Hermanus Administration at the Overstrand Municipality confirmed that the pool is cleaned daily. “Although the pool is cleaned and put through filters daily, the dust from the construction works across from the pool unfortunately settles in the pool area. “The construction company currently works over weekends too.” “The pool vacuum was already in operation when the person arrived, and the odd piece of plastic that had blown over the wall was removed immediately. “It is unfortunate that the clients gained the wrong impression of the pool as it is maintained to a high standard. “The permanent staff keep the pool clean as usual (out of season), but then time is taken to service the pumps, clean the filters and do general maintenance on the pools, buildings and grounds.” According to Kearney there are also three life guards on duty at the pool.

Ria roep onderwys vaarwel toe

CHILDLINE

4 December, 2014

JAN-HENDRIK COETZER

Happy holidays!

Proudly Hermanus Two reports in last week’s edition, prompt me to mention to Hermanus Times’ readers just two things before the festive season of giving. Firstly, Hermanus should be proud that the amount of time and money and effort residents devote to their neighbourhood must average per capita more possibly than any other community in Southern Africa and much of the planet. One small part of this is due to the kind of people who choose Hermanus for their lifestyle or retirement, bringing with them the experience, knowledge and spare hours not usually available in such quantities elsewhere. And that accounts – but again only partly – for the positive reactions that accrue among Hermanus’s aged and helpless and disadvantaged. Their responses in this particular community are positive enough to create self-help and similar benefits for us all. Secondly, Hermanus should also be proud that it is the home of the Enlighten Trust which, though resolutely focused only on the local community, has an international reputation which attracts visits from educational experts around the world. They come to see and to learn because Enlighten exists entirely on the generosity of donors and voluntary workers, some of whom are giving their working lives to ensuring the success of its special projects aimed at fostering better education. Enlighten offers everyone the opportunity to join in helping young local children to reach for a good education they would not otherwise find. What better cause is there? And your donation, whether in some rands or some volunteered time, can go directly into a special project – instead of into running an institution. That knowledge in itself is a gift to those who give.

BYPASS: Close Hermanus town for heavy traffic – use the R316 to Gansbaai and Bredasdorp Having been a padmaker (road builder) I should like to have my ten cents worth in the debate. I will remind the municipality and the Hermanus folk of the feasibility that was done on the proposed Knysna bypass which never got off the ground for many obvious reasons. The thought of the roads in the town being thumped to death by heavily-loaded trucks is enough to ignite everybody’s support for the idea but today there are issues that should make one tread carefully. Every Karoo town has a nice approach and egress but the towns’ roads are one big pothole, and the roads around Carolina and the road from Phalaborwa to Mica on the way to Hoedspruit are impassable to a sedan car illustrating how difficult it is to keep destroyed roads passable. Destroyed because the roads are being used to carry overloads at frequencies far in excess of the designs that were used at time of construction. These guilty parties are using (destroying) the roads but to make them accountable and get them to restore the roads is a mission seldom achieved, particularly as one cannot just repair the surface which means the lower layers also need attention and this costs

millions. The feasibility of this Hermanus bypass with cost estimates need to be explored after a route has been established. This alone costs lots of bucks, and who is going to pay? Cognisance of the fact that South Africa is now in for a very tough five years, at least, and from the government down, funds, whilst they might be promised, will, I suggest, not be that readily forthcoming. So Hermanus local authority needs to be aware of the fact that it will be putting itself and its ratepayers at tremendous risk. This is no easy answer, but my observations are that at this stage there is not the traffic flow that Knysna is subjected to, but concede that in five to 10 years that will be different. My question is, why do the local authorities not consider closing down the town to heavy traffic that are using the Hermanus town roads as a short cut? Surely this will eliminate at least half of the problem. All through-traffic should be forced to use the R316 “provincial” road to Gansbaai and Bredasdorp. I suggest that an accurate census be done to establish the usage factor and whether there is any merit in the plan.

Cliff path sculptures How long are all those ghastly out-of-place socalled pieces of art going to stay at Gearing’s Point? They just don’t fit in.

RW

Mary Faure, Chairperson: Hermanus Tourism, and Coordinator: Hermanus FynArts, responds: Hermanus Tourism and Hermanus FynArts have municipal permission for the sculptures to remain in place until the end of April 2015. They will then be removed and hopefully replaced by a new exhibition in June 2015. The FynArts team is committed to working with the people of Hermanus to present a topquality, classical-type arts festival that is enjoyed by locals while at the same time, it draws art and music lovers and other discerning visitors to Hermanus during the quiet winter months. Another aim of Hermanus FynArts is to help develop Hermanus into a year-round arts destination. All of the sculptors are highly respected and acclaimed. This first Sculptures on the Cliffs exhibition has been praised by art critics, residents and visitors. Not everyone will like each sculpture – that is clearly a personal choice. However, it is important to note that each piece was specifi-

cally selected and carefully placed to interact with both the environment and people: you can stare out to sea with Marike Prinsloo-Rowe’s kneeling girl, or watch the seagull’s alight on Strijdom van der Merwe’s nest on the rocks. Delight in our diverse flora with Jaco Sieberhagen’s joyful flowers; marvel at the ever-changing seascape seen through Strijdom’s wheel or wonder at the sensitivity of Dylan Lewis’ Winged Lady or enjoy the exciting burst of colour that contrasts strongly with the blue of the sea and blends in with the sunset. This exhibition has given Hermanus a great deal of ongoing publicity via the press, holiday snaps, tweets and facebook. Tourism is the lifeblood of Hermanus. We need visitors and we need to be competitive, creative and environmentally sensitive in the way we attract them. We have made every effort to ensure that Sculptures on the Cliffs has honoured this. The next Hermanus FynArts festival will take place over the twelve days from 5-16 June 2015. It is hoped that Hermanus will once again be privileged to host such a highly quality exhibition as Sculpture on the Cliffs. If anyone would like to know more about the sculptures, please contact Hermanus Tourism on 028 312 2629 and we will arrange a time for a guided walk.

‘Get on with It’ internship training initiative We are currently sitting with a massive problem in our picturesque little village: unemployment. There are about 100 matriculants finishing school this year who will need placement in businesses to train for six months during the first half of next year. The Western Cape Government with its skills development programme will contribute a stipend of R2 000 per month for a student to learn a skill over a 6-month period at your business. This is an attempt to teach the youngsters a life skill or craft that could lead to employment. This programme has been in progress at Abagold, HIK, Harbour Rock and The Marine Hotel. Most of the students training in hospitality have already been assimilated into various restaurants and guest houses in Hermanus. We are now looking for new businesses across all fields to place students (of all races and backgrounds) next year. I can assure you that we have seen the most unbelievable quality of candidates thus far, most of them will have a matric and some have varsity passes but the tertiary institutions are too full to cater for them. We are entering a crucial phase in this country where almost 700 000 learners are falling out of the school system annually. These youngsters all start school then drop out along the way. But, equally tragic, is the number who do get that far and are then forced into a life of poverty with a bleak future. What we are doing is a drop in the ocean, but I know that if we place another 100 students in businesses around Hermanus, we will be making a huge difference. Contact myself, Francois Barnard from Harbour Rock on therock.francois@gmail.com or 082 574 0050. You won’t regret it and you will be making a difference. Lets just GET ON WITH IT.

Anton and his team brought us goodwill We are now safely back in Hermanus, after an eagerly anticipated threeweek safari to Zimbabwe, covering over 7 000 km in our Pajero iO. However, it was nearly not to be when we checked our vehicle in for a routine service three days before we were due to set off, only to be told by the garage that the radiator was ‘shot’. Radiators for imported vehicles are not easy to come by at such short notice and it was only when Anton of Silverton Radiators, sensing our

desperate plight, undertook to go that extra mile (over 400 km to be exact!) to find one. He and his work mates then spent the whole of the following day adapting the radiator and it was only at the eleventh hour when we could be certain that we would be on our way. In this Season of Goodwill to all Mankind, Anton is a living example of how that can be put into practice! With our sincere thanks,

Abagold crowned by Chamber Abagold Limited in Hermanus, which farms abalone for export, was the judge’s choice for the Transnet National Ports Authority for the best non-manufacturing exporter of the year at the Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry Exporter of the Year function on 28 November. Nautic Africa scooped the Transnet Port Terminals Award for the best manufacturing exporter of the year and the Chamber’s award for innovation. The company makes fast launches and patrol boats, mainly for West African countries and the oil industry. Most of them are used to protect and service oil rigs and deal with piracy. The overall Exporter of the Year winner was a Brackenfell company, Maverick Trading, which manufactures manhole covers, frames and other products from polymer concrete. Their products include gully grates and grids for storm water drains, which are widely used to replace steel grates and covers that are regularly stolen for sale to the scrap metal industry. They are lighter, stronger and cheaper than the steel products they are replacing, as they have no scrap value and are thus ignored by thieves. The prize for transformation went to Diemersfontein/Thokozani Winelands, where farmworkers are now shareholders in the company. The Credit Guarantee Award for the best Small Exporter went to Oh Lief Natural Products, a cosmetic

Janine Myburgh (Cape Chamber President), Christo du Plessis (Managing Director – Abagold) and Sipho Nzuza (Cape Town Port Manager Transnet National Ports Authority) firm started by two sisters. Their products are made from 100% natural and organic, raw ingredients, which are all sourced locally. In her speech Janine Myburgh, President of the Chamber, made mention of the fact that sporting stars are showered with honours but not enough is done for champions of the business world. “Looking at all our finalists, they have all had to overcome major problems and deal with ongoing difficulties. Don’t we all feel the prob-

lems of our electricity supply, some of the highest port tariffs in the world and the chronic South African problem of over-legislation? “We all know that the economic indicators are not looking good. Recently Johann Rupert berated South Africa’s government for failing to address corruption and power shortages. “South Africa’s central bank expects the second-largest economy on the continent to grow at just 1.4% this year, levels not seen since the

2009 recession. This as a series of blackouts caused by a failing energy network as well as strikes impact our production. “While the stronger rand helps our exporters, the rising input costs and business uncertainty are casting a pall on our exporters,” said Myburgh. She made reference to a World Bank report earlier this year showing that since 2005, South Africa’s total exports have grown in real terms by only 0.6% a year at a time

when its BRIC counterparts were making immense gains into global markets. “The report shows that the bulk of South African exports are concentrated in a few mega firms who ship products to countries around the world, with approximately 1000 companies generating 93% of all of the country’s exports. In addition, these mega companies are losing momentum as they are creating fewer new products and not expanding into new markets. “It is obvious then, that the smaller and medium companies need to pick up the slack, which calls for a growing export economy to create jobs.” She mentioned one piece of good news announced last week. “Africa’s largest free trade area is set to be launched in Egypt next month. The Tripartite free trade area also known as the Grand Free Trade Area, will have a combined population of 625 million people and a Gross Domestic Product of 1,2 trillion $US. “It will account for half of the membership of the African Union and 58 per cent of the continent’s GDP and it is expected to be the launching pad for the establishment of the Continental Free Trade Area in 2017. “This bodes exceptionally well for our exporters who will understand that free trade areas can only benefit their African expansion.” Myburgh ended her speech with a quote from Winston Churchill, who said: “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.”

How fit is your finances? What is a personal loan? • Whether you want to buy something you’ve had your eye on but the price remains out of reach, would like to give your lifestyle a boost with a dream holiday or have an unexpected expense to deal with, a personal loan is a cost-effective way of making it happen • A personal loan can be used to finance a planned or unplanned event. What is a credit profile? • A report of how you repay your debt is used to build your credit profile (also known as credit history), which is used each time you apply for a loan or credit, whether it’s a clothing store account, vehicle finance or a home loan. • Before credit providers such as banks and retailers lend you money, they need to know whether you have paid back loans/debts on time. • Without a credit history they can’t tell if you are a

responsible debt payer – that’s why it is important to build a good credit history – to show people you can be trusted. Your risk profile is based on: • Your credit history • Whether you pay regularly, skip payments or make part payments • The information on your credit profile is submitted to credit bureaus by credit providers you have dealt with Manage your debt Remember to never overindebt yourself and remain financially fit. Debt can lead to increased stress levels and depression, so remain committed to paying off your loan, kerb your spending and don’t take out any more loans. You can remain financially savvy by following these tips: • Draw up a budget and track your expenditure • Determine your income, including salary, freelance work, rent, investments, tax refunds and even your cashback rewards • Draw up a list of all your day-to-day, monthly and yearly expenses • Don’t forget your car licence renewal, TV licence, rates and post box renewals • Plan for unexpected costs – such as tyres, school trips and traffic fines – and start building an emergency fund • Keep track of everything you’re spending against your planned budget What steps can you take to manage your financial fitness better? • Know your credit rating. to check your credit status and financial reputation Review your bank statement and confirm that all debit orders are correct. If you think values are wrong, make some calls and find out more. Remember: there is nothing wrong with asking questions, and unless you ask, you will never know if the costs are legitimate Call your insurer and make sure that your car is insured for the correct book value. This should be done once a year Call your bank to make sure you have the best all-inclusive fee option on your accounts so that you pay one monthly fee and not for every transaction you do Use the balance transfer option to consolidate your credit card at a lower interest rate and commit to paying off your accounts as soon as possible Want to know exactly what you will spend on your home loan every month? You could phone your bank and ask about fixing your home loan interest rate. This means that if the prime rate increases, your home loan instalment won’t increase unexpectedly Call your bank and request a quote to extend the term of your existing loans or a lower interest rate Review your medical aid plan – there may be many extra benefits that you might not be aware of. Maybe you can use your medical aid savings account for more health care purchases or change your plan to suit your lifestyle Pay extra into your home loan every month. Even an amount as small as R100 can have a significant impact on the amount of interest you will pay in the long term.

Take control. Prosper.

Elim man wins commercial farming award JUANITA SHEPHERD Ralph Swart from Elim was the Western Cape’s first finalist to walk away with the Grain SA/Absa New Era Commercial Farmer of the Year national trophy. Ralph, who has lived in Elim all his life, began farming 34 years ago with two hectares for planting, one cow and 10 sheep. Today he farms 1 280 ha in Elim with 1 900 Dohne Merino ewes, 40 rams, 140 Bonsmara cows and three bulls. He is currently renting 1 059 ha of land and owns 89 ha in Elim. He also recently bought a new farm, Groot Dam, in Stormsvlei in the Bredasdorp district.

He is proud to be a third-generation farmer, and says he is a child of Elim. “I attended Elim Primary School. “While I was writing my Grade 8 exam, my father was waiting outside for me as it was harvest time and he needed my help.” Until today Ralph doesn’t know if he passed Grade 8. Farming is the only thing he ever wanted to do. He produces wheat, barley, oats, triticale, and rooibos tea. He is married to Preline and has six children. The eldest two sons, Leaan and Jacques, have dedicated their careers to the family business, Swart Boerdery. Preline is intensively involved in Swart Boerdery, and was the winner of young female farmer of the year in 2013, provincially as well as nationally.

Swart Boerdery grows a mix of grain crops, but to make full use of non-arable veld, the farm also includes a livestock component. Ralph says the main contributor to his progress and success was the Western Cape Department of Agriculture. He is eager to learn and continuously improves his practises and rarely misses a study group meeting, training course or conservation agriculture day. In 2012 Swart Boerdery was awarded Farmer of the Year by United South African Agricultural Association Champions for Sustainable Agriculture (USAAA). Ralph would like to establish a sustainable commercial farming business. He has been invited to go to Paris, France to attend an intensive course on conservation farming.

FIRST THERE IS ADVENT: Sun day 30 November was Advent Sunday and, for the Christian churches, it is the first day of its new year. It also marks the start of the season of Advent. During these four weeks running up to Christmas, Christians are asked to spend time considering their preparedness to meet Jesus on the day of his second coming. The archdeaconry of Caledon, the cluster of Anglican parishes from Grabouw through to Bredasdorp, celebrated this event with a carol service held at the church of St. Peter the Fisherman, Hermanus. Choirs from Bredasdorp, Botriver, Elgin, Hawston and Cale don met with Hermanus to sing hymns and say psalms, celebrating the coming of Christ as Emmanuel, God with us. ANNE PHILIP

KIDBROOKE CARE WORKERS RECEIVE CERTIFICATES: It was a happy celebration for the residents and staff at Kidbrooke when 18 of their care workers were awarded their certificates of completion for a yearlong Ancillary Health Care Worker Level 3 course. The training was conducted by Sister Kitta Nieuwland as facilitator from the Glen Lilly Training College. The students achieved remarkable success, completing with scores of between 76% and 100%. The three top students were Tuystella van Rooyen, Madré Fuller and Florence Faltenjwa. The course means that the care workers now comply with the standard of the Department of Social Development. Hermanus Staan Saam-fees groot sports

Vir meer inligting oor Hermanus Staan Saam, bel Tronel Meintjies by 082 737 1226.

Spaying and neutering your pet Literally thousands of unwanted puppies and kittens are born in our town every year. Many of them die of disease and malnutrition. While some are taken in by the welfare organisations and homes are found for others, many survive to live and breed again indiscriminately. Spaying and neutering animals would go a long way in controlling diseases like distemper, Parvo virus, Feline Aids and leukaemia and more importantly avoid the suffering of these animals. If you cannot afford to have your animal spayed or neutered, contact either the Hermanus Animal Hospital on 028 312 3065 or

Festive message from the Mayor

Umyalezo wexesha lokuphela konyaka ovela Kusodolophu

With Christmas around the corner, everyone is busy preparing for the festive season. Not only is this a time for festivities, but it is also the opportunity to show goodwill towards one another. It is the season to enjoy quality time with those near and dear to us,and to embody the message of the Messiah who brought light to a world filled with darkness. To spread this gift of light costs nothing and will not tire you!

Njengoko iKresimesi sele isondele wonke umntu ulungiselela eli xesha lokuphela konyaka. Eli asiloxesha leziyunguma nje kuphela koko ikwalixesha lokubonakalisa ukulunga kwabanye abantu. Lixesha lokuchitha ixesha elimnandi nabantu obathandayo nabasondeleyo kuwe nenze umzekelo woMsindisi oweza nokukhanya kwihlabathi elalisebunyameni. Ukusasaza esi sipho sokukhanya akunazindleko kwaye akudini!

Let us use this festive season to help rid the world of criminality, fear, injustice and self-ser ving pride . Let us be trustworthy and responsible in all we do, showing respect and being just in our dealings with one another. By doing this, we can work together towards a caring community in which good citizenship is a matter of course and not a chore.

Masilisebenzise eli xesha lokuphela konyaka ukuphelisa ulwaphulomthetho, u l oy i ko, u k u n g a b i k h o ko b u l u n g i s a nekratshi lokujonga iziqu zethu kuphela. Masithembeke sibe nenkathalo kuyo yonke into esiyenzayo sibonise intlonipho nobulungisa xa sisebenza nabanye abantu. Ngokwenza ngale ndlela singasebenza kunye sakhe uluntu olunenkathalo olunoluntu olunenkathalo ngelizwe lalo.

We would like to wish all our residents and visitors a pleasant and safe holiday. May we all enjoy a joyous and blessed Christmas time and may 2015 be filled with peace and prosperity.

DOGS: Questions asked and answered The DOGS played an Individual Stableford (final log) / 4BBB on 2 December in Klein mond. Sporran McCalder took the honours with a magnificent 42 on a day which started out with ideal weather for the hardy Scot. But many questions remained unan swered: Would Mr. Countback hold on to his place as log leader? Would the showers continue for all the round? Would Hanging Judge Robinson escape further ignominy? Should Frenchmen be allowed to drive golf carts? NO – as his “hazy” George tour form con tinued; NO – oh ye of little faith in golfweath er.com and DOGSBODY’s seaweed; NO – despite a worryingly improving perform ance; NO – they drive on the wrong side of the road and ‘andz are for steering not talking’. Results: Stableford: 42 Alan Calder; 41 Hugh Frangs; 39 Mannes van Zyl; 36 Andre Franken, Ian Newman, Peter Theron; 35 Da ve Brittain, Koos Roelofse; 34 Michel Mau ry; 33 Peter Thomas; 30 Jon Forsyth, Dave Smith; 28 Gary Wentzel; 27 Mike Graham, Pat Dewil; 25 Tony Jones; 24 Dave Robinson 4BBB: 50 Hugh Frangs / Michel Maury DAVE SMITH

Golf Roundup with Julian Shaw

Barry Vermeulen and Sarah Milton

Raffle raises money for horse equipment In November the parents and children from Equestrian Centre Overstrand organised their first raffle to raise money to buy much needed new equipment for their horses. The raffle closed on 30 November. Tickets cost R5 and were sold as far afield as Somerset West and the Strand. The draw took place at Sandown Blues Restaurant at 17:30 on 1 December. The centre thanked all the adults, children and parents who helped with selling tickets, the prize sponsors and also to Paul Richards for hosting the draw and the prize from Sandown Blues. Leticia Singleton and Paul Rich-

ards both took part in the draw and drew two winners each: 1st prize - 1,5hr beach ride for two people was won by Elize Leibbrand 2nd prize - Annique beauty products was won by M J Hickley. 3rd prize - A R150 meal voucher @ Sandown Blues was won by Mrs H Van Wyk. 4th prize - Food hamper was won by Charl van Wyk. Equestrian Centre Overstrand would like to thank all the children, parents and adults that ride with them for doing such a wonderful job. The horses will enjoy their new halters and other equipment. The centre wishes everyone a neighing good holiday, merry Christmas and prosperous New Year. SARAH MILTON

It’s December and the festive season is upon us, so make sure to book your golf early as the club will be full and friendly. CONGRATULATIONS To start this week, congratulations must go to two of the club’s lady members. Wanda Venter and Lynne Behagg have been recognised by Boland Ladies Golf. Wanda has been elected to the post of Vice President of Boland Ladies Golf and Lynne has been elected to the executive committee. The terms are two years. Wanda, who has been Ladies Captain here at Hermanus, will be overseeing all ladies golf and junior development in the Boland and make sure it all runs smoothly. There are many events and functions and these will now be under her eagle eye. Lynne has represented the province on numerous occasions and is a multiple club championship winner. She will make a valuable contribution on especially a playing advisory role. TUESDAY LADIES A total of 46 players enjoyed a three-ball alliance competition. Taking the honours on a huge score of 79 points was the mighty trio Annie Spratt, Mirium Squires and fresh from her holein-one exploits Pat Etsebeth. Talking about holes-in-one:

Many congratulations to Emma Hayter for her hole in one last week. WEDNESDAY MENS 136 players took part in a windy better-ball medal. Quite a challenge, but the cream rose to the top in the form of Bill McGeachy and Glynn Davies with a nett 64 on the South course, Willie Theron and Daan Dockel on the same score on the North course and a tremendous nett 61 on the East course from Henk der Kinderen and partner Lance Nel. Brilliant golf considering the blustery weather. There was only three two clubs. SATURDAY BETTERBALL BONUS BOGEY Saturday was a nice big field of 140 players who enjoyed perfect weather conditions. Coming out on top on the South course was Henk Kleinloog and Peter Bennett on +10. Taking top place on the North course on +11 was Barry Simpson and Don Slade and winning the East course was Alistair Gardener and partner Dave Marteze. THE 27 HOLE CHALLENGE This week is the ever-popular “27 hole tee off for trees tournament”, and all eyes are on 14 December for the ladies Christmas mixed competition which as ever promises to be a festive day of golf and fun. Until next week keep calm and go golfing.

‘Krewe’ give Zurich food for throught Last weekend’s double bill left the Zurich Hermanus First X1 with lots to ponder over the festive season break. On Saturday, the First X1 hosted Robertson and did not disappoint with a resounding 6-wicket win. Robertson managed only 109, with Willem du Toit and Tashwin Lukas softening up the top order while Bradley Petersen and Derek Brand cashed in on the wickets, taking four and two respectively. The Hermanus reply started briskly with Brand and Lee Thomason putting up another 50-run opening partnership. Dirkie Marais and Larry Dorman chipped in and with the help of a truckload of extras, the target was reached in the 24th over. Another five points in the bag and the side started prepping for the long trip up to Vredenburg on Sunday. The day dawned bright and breezy as Hermanus made the threehour trip to the home of the “Krewe” on the West Coast. Brand won the toss and elected to bat first. After losing Thomason and Petersen for only 1 run between them, it certainly looked like a bad choice, but then George Hlazo and Brand batted beautifully to add 97 runs to the scoreboard. Brand was then caught at deep cover and Dorman stepped into the breach. With lots to prove, Dorman

took charge and pierced the field with uncanny accuracy. Hlazo was run out on a very well played 45 and Lukas joined Dorman. The two of them took the score to 208 for 6 with Dorman finishing on 56* and Lukas on 24*. At last the middle order showed up and 208 was certainly defendable. With the Cape Doctor picking up in the afternoon, bowling into the wind was a tough ask but Lukas, Ishmail September, Thomason and even the skipper Brand toiled away nonetheless. The wicket though, instead of deteriorating, just got flatter than flat. No movement for the bowlers, no turn from the spinners and absolutely no assistance from the two third league umpires, who were in fact, fantastically diabolical. At 53 for 3, the game was nicely poised, but then a 150-run partnership, peppered with half-chances not taken, shatter any chance of a “double” for Hermanus. With all of these factors weighing against them, the visitors’ fielding became sloppy and lethargic, not what one needs on a marble-like outfield. Vredenburg won by 6 wickets, with overs to spare and for once the “Brains Trust” of the Hermanus side were out-thought, leaving them with plenty to think about on the long drive home. - STICKY FINGERS

ABAGOLD IN DOUBLE CENTURY: The Abagold DC Riders 2014 team participated in the recent Coronation Double Century race over 202 km. The team came in seventh position in the mixed catego ry in a time of 06:40 – achieving their sub7 target. The team included (at the back) RG du Toit, Philip Fyfer, Werner Kriel, Andre van der Merwe, Christiaan de Wet and Graham Tjabring. Middle: Anel Henn, Anzél du Plessis, Shaun Luyt, Robbie Viljoen and Ian Jones. Front: Caroline Tjabring (support crew), Jeanie de Villiers, Jeremy Browne (support crew).

SECOND PLACE FOR HERMANUS: On Wednes day 26 November, the Helderberg Bowls Club host ed the Jean Minnaar Ladies Day. A total of 24 teams from neighbouring clubs competed in three games of 12 and 15 ends, not only against each other, but also against blustering winds. Renee Fullard, Glenda Theo bald, Elsa Carstens and Jean Greying were part of one of the teams from Hermanus, which finished in second place, missing first place by only one shot. All the women were invited to wear fancy hats to make it a fun day and a prize was given for the hat with the most bling. Needless to say a good time was had by all.

Hawston beats Bredasdorp The Hawston Cricket Club hosted Bredasdorp, currently rated second on the first division log, on Saturday in a fifty over encounter. Bredasdorp batted first scoring 147 runs in 45 overs. The Hawston bowlers maintained a good line and length and the pick of the bowlers were Devan Hamilton with an excellent 4/31 in 9 overs. Heino Bailey, Charlton Joorst and Elton Jacobs picked up one wicket each.

In reply Hawston batsmen started well and the veterans Philip Olifant scored 61 runs* and Denfred October, who scored 30 runs, ensured a good victory by four wickets for Hawston. Hawston wants to thank all their supporters. The team will travel to Elgin this coming weekend for the last game of the first round. - LLYLE TAIT
