P ublic k ept iin n tthe he Public kept d ark a bout dark about p olluted e stuary polluted estuary HEDDA MITTNER A reader alerted the Hermanus Times last week to the presence of unacceptable levels of pollution in the Klein River estuary since December last year. The high levels of bacterial contamination were due to a sewage spill at the municipal pump station inside the Hermanus Scout Camp near the mouth of the estuary. “What is absolutely shocking to me is that there are no signs warning members of the public not to swim there or allow their dogs to swim there,” says the reader, Sarah Taylor. “And there is a Blue Flag beach just a kilometre or so away.” Taylor also alleges that “someone related to the Hermanus holiday camp refused to allow the municipality to erect ‘no swimming’ signs there because it would mean parents would have taken their children out of the camp. ing the Bot and Onrus estuaries, where repeated spills have occurred over the years.” Fryer says the situation is unacceptable and that the municipality should review its protocol for warning the public and initiating the appropriate response. Erecting a sign, he says, is not enough. “It comes down to where the community’s priorities lie. If we want to market ourselves as a tourist mecca, steps should be taken to ensure that sewage spills never happen.” ) A sewage spill also occurred at the Onrus pump station on 8 January. When water quality tests conducted on 23 January revealed an unacceptably high count of enterococci bacteria in the estuary, which is a sign of faecal contamination, a sign warning the public that the water is polluted and that swimming is prohibited was erected at the beach. However, members of the public continue to swim there, which shows that people do not always pay attention to signs, especially when they notice others using the estuary.

Views about mall aired HEDDA MITTNER A show of hands after the two hour public meeting to discuss the proposed retail mall in Sandbaai indicated that about two thirds of those present are opposed to the development.

Most of the speakers expressed their concern about the detrimental effect the mall would have on the CBD. The expectation is that a large shopping mall only about three kilometres from the town centre would lead to a decline in the CBD as the existing buisinesses will not be able to compete. Retail Africa was granted partial environmental authorisation on 3 January by the Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning (DEADP) for a retail facility of 27 800m² on the site situated between CTM and the Engen garage along the R43. Both the Hermanus Business Chamber (HBC) and Hermanus Ratepayers Association (HRA) have notified the department of their intent to appeal and apellants now have until 24 February to lodge a final appeal with motivation. The public meeting was convened by the president of the HBC Mervyn Milner, and the speakers included Rob Fryer, manager of Whale Coast Conservation (WCC), Petrus Hendriksz, coordinator of the CBD Revitalisation Project, Piet Louw, an independent business consultant and Grant McLachlan, chairperson of the HRA. About 70 people attended the meeting which was hosted by the Whale Coast Hotel at 17:30 on Tuesday afternoon. They were urged by Fryer to look at the actual long-term needs of the community as opposed to the commercial interests of national retail businesses wanting to grow their national footprint. “Will a large mall address these needs?” he asked. He also referred to the downward trend of the state of our environment which includes the loss of habitat and biodiversity which results when the wrong use is made of scarce land inside the urban edge. Hendriksz in turn emphasised the reputation of the CBD as a tourist destination. He admitted that, speaking as a resident, the mall would be convenient, but speaking as a businessman he said that convenience would come at too high a cost. Hendriksz questioned the accuracy of the authorisation document’s motivation that the area’s growth in demographics will lead to higher retail demand and that the mall will fill this gap. He said there are more than enough existing retail facilities in Hermanus and the only gap is in entertainment, especially for young people. “But does this gap justify 27 800m²?” he asked. He also challenged the authorisation’s motivation which states that “the retail facility and CBD would be able to co-exist, with the latter remaining unique in its offering as a very attractive tourist destination which will be able to continue to successfully offer small speciality stores and very attractive and good restaurants.” Hendriksz said the CBD could not survive on tourist trade only and that the mall would feed off the CBD “until it dies”. Cannibalism
would undoubtably take place in the following ways: duplication of similar offerings already in existence in the CBD; migration of business entities from the CBD; and migration of purchase power from the CBD to the mall. The vacancies created in the CBD, said Hendriksz, would lead to its demise due to a chain reaction: shops will stand empty and put financial pressure on the landlords, who will in turn have no other choice but to let their premises to the lower end of the market. This will change the character of Hermanus which is at present so attractive to tourists, he said. Louw confirmed that additional shopping centres would only mean that the existing cake is sliced into smaller pieces and that the viability of old and new businesses in the CBD would be compromised. However, he added that the Overstrand has a small, concentrated and vulnerable economy. The community is poor (two thirds of the population earn less than R6 500 per month), with a high rate of unemployment (only 1 500 new jobs have been created since 2004). “From a purely economic viewpoint the mall could be an opportunity for new investment, job creation and the upgrade of infrastructure,” Louw said. He urged residents and business owners to not only see the problems but to work around them by concentrating on the revitalisation of the CBD before the mall is built. McLachlan agreed that “the mall can make the CBD stronger” if plans to revitalise the CBD are implemented and steps are taken to ensure that the tenant mix at the mall does not threaten businesses in the CBD. Members of the public who also aired their views included local attorney Adrian Louw, who said he would welcome the mall because the CBD is already overcrowded. “The CBD will stay alive,” he said. “Just look at the vibrant CBD of Cape Town which has survived in spite of the Waterfront.” However, the owner of Hermanus Pharmacy in Main Road, Brenda Kotzé, said one only needs to look at all the malls built during the last ten years to see what effect it had on the CBDs of George, Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, Jeffrey’s Bay, Worcester, Caledon and Vredenburg. “It will be naive to believe it won’t happen here,” she said. “And where are the economic advantages if all the money spent at the mall goes over the mountain to the national retailers and not to our community?” she asked. “Shops in the CBD will stand empty and the character of this town will be destroyed – it’s happened everywhere.” Derrick Dickens aired his views as a resident of Sandbaai and said the mall would be convenient, especially for the elderly, because they would not have to contend with traffic or pay for parking. “Why does no one ask the people of Sandbaai what they want?” he asked. Milner said on Wednesday that the chamber’s exco will meet tomorrow (Thursday) to discuss the way forward. “There is still a lot of information that we need to gather and which we will have to take into consideration before making a decision about lodging an appeal,” he said.

Couple tied up in nature reserve JANINE VAN DER RIET A couple was tied up, robbed and deserted in the Fernkloof Nature Reserve on Tuesday 28 January. The couple, local residents in the Hemelen-Aarde Valley, were walking in the reserve at 08:00 when they were suddenly attacked by three men. The suspects threatened the couple with knives, tied them up with shoelaces and robbed them of their cellphones and jewellery. They then left the couple bound together and fled on foot. The items stolen are worth about R40 000. The man managed to untie his wife and himself and immediately reported the incident to the Hermanus police. Besides the robbery, the couple was not physically harmed. The police are investigating the attack and contingency plans are being formulated to counter such incidents and to arrest
the suspects. Station commissioner, Col Nomana Adonis, requested visitors to the reserve to be vigilant and aware of their surroundings while hiking. “These perpetrators usually hit on the weaker and elderly and will not hesitate to use force to achieve their goal. Do not try to be a hero and defend property that can be replaced. A life cannot be replaced,” she said. This was the first robbery reported since July 2012 when five women were attacked and robbed in the reserve. Prior to the attack in 2012, there were a spate of robberies and attacks on hikers in this nature reserve in 2009 and 2010 which made international headlines. A breakthrough for the Hermanus police came in March 2011 when a 36-year-old man and his co-accused in a robbery that took place in Fernkloof in December 2009, were each sentenced to 10 years imprisonment. Anyone with information must contact the detective office on 028 313 7000.

Red tide: be cautious with seafood JAN-HENDRIK COETZER Red tide has been confirmed by the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (DAFF) from the Walker Bay region all the way up the coast as far as East London. According to Grant Pitcher from DAFF, the public should avoid eating any shellfish collected from this region during the red tide, which started last week. Red tides usually occur along the Cape’s western or southern coasts in the late summer months and towards autumn. The prevailing southerly winds at this time of year causes upwelling, which means that the colder, nutrient-rich water rises up from the deeper regions of the ocean to the surface. Justin Lawrence from CapeNature explains that most red tides along the South African coast are caused by a group of
phytoplankton known as dinoflagellates. “The dinoflagellates can produce certain toxins, some of which are poisonous to humans,” says Lawrence. The term red tide refers to the discolouration of water which may be not only red, but also brown, orange or yellow. This discolouration is caused by dense concentrations of microscopic plants in the sea called phytoplankton. The variations of discoloration occurs due to factors such as the species of phytoplankton, its pigments, size and concentration, the time of day or the angle of the sun. “Toxins are generally heat stable and are not destroyed by heat, so it is important to be aware that cooking can only slightly lessen the toxicity of affected shellfish rather that kill it. While shellfish are mostly affected, all seafood should be treated and eaten with caution during red tides,” says Lawrence.
New ‘parking’ mall to open soon JANINE VAN DER RIET The new centre on Main Road (near Woolworths), offering more CBD parking and shops, will open in the beginning of March and will be called the Carriage Centre. The new development will comprise retail on the ground floor and three levels of parking. One of the two new restaurants is @ Food and Wine, which will open its doors in the first week of March. This restaurant is a partnership between the Steyn family of Hermanus Guest House and Rudolf van der Berg from Savannah Cafe. Their main dishes will be steak and burgers, with local wine from the Steyn family called
Mont Andre, as well as mostly local wines of the area. Negotiations are still under way for the rest of the retail space on the ground floor. Tenants who have already signed up, besides the two restaurants, include an estate agent, a bookshop and a sport shop. Entrance to the complex will be off High Street, which runs parallel to Main Road, and the parking bays will be accsessed via a ramp, but the place where shoppers must retrieve their ticket will be on even ground and not an uphill. Construction started in July last year and the developers were hoping to open shop in December, but due to weather related delays, the development will be completed in March. The Carriage Centre will offer 73 parking bays.

The event succeeded in bringing the winemakers of the area together as a community and providing an unforgettable experience of our area and our wines. Bona Dea Estate hosted the Friday functions where guests were taken through a tasting journey of the three Hemel-en-Aarde appellations’ Pinot noir by winemakers representing each appellation. Hannes Storm, winemaker at Hamilton Russell Vineyards led the tasting of Hemel-en-Aarde Valley’s wines, which included a taste of his own maiden vintage, Storm Vrede, and Peter-Allan Finlayson’s Crystallum Bona Fide made from grapes sourced from Jadrie Lötter’s farm Vrede. Gordon Newton Johnson explained the intricacies of Pinots from the Upper Hemel-enAarde Valley, which includes Newton Johnson, Sumaridge and Whalehaven. Reino Thiart has extended the Whalehaven wine portfolio by producing a Pinot noir from grapes grown on Sumaridge.
Cosying up in the Bouchard Finlayson cellar were, from left: Rozy Gunn (Iona), Lia Poveda (global ambassador for Bouchard Finlayson), winemaker Peter Finlayson (Bouchard Finlayson), UK Master of Wine Tim Atkin, Andrew Gunn (Iona), Martin Moran, Master of Wine, Ireland, and David Wong from China. PHOTO: BERNARD JORDAAN
The Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge’s Pinot noirs were explained by Creation’s owner and winemaker JC Martin. These included Pinots from Domaine des Dieux, Creation, La Vierge and Crystallum.
With this tasting of 14 local Pinot noirs the audience contemplated the influence of location, vine age, soil, temperature, rootstock and wine making on the quality of the wines. Friday evening saw more tasting of Pinot noirs but this time the fruit of Burgundy, home of the Pinot noir grape, was explored. The event attracted many local guests and also had attendees arriving from France, Germany, England and China. All had one thing in common – their love for Pinot noir and enthusiasm to learn about this fickle grape. The celebration continued on the Saturday with the wineries hosting their own events starting with a “New Dawn of Pinot noir” breakfast at La Vierge and ending with a PiNot party at Hemelrand. Hemel-en-Aarde Winegrowers’ Association chairman Bevan Newton Johnson said: “With a successful first Pinot Noir Celebration behind us we look forward to our 2014 harvest and focussing our efforts on producing more Pinot noirs to make us and our region proud”.
Among those who enjoyed the Pinot Noir Celebration were, from left: Rayno and Celia Rabie, and Francine and Johan Koegelenberg at Creation.

Sea-and-Sand to establish sports festival JAN-HENDRIK COETZER The National Sea-and-Sand Institute will have an open meeting in the Whale Coast Hotel today (Thursday 6 February) starting at 18:30, where the Walker Bay Active outdoor competition, scheduled to take place from 26 April to 3 May, will be discussed. Through this project Sea-and-Sand aims to raise funds for the institute and call on all sponsors and interested parties to attend the meeting. Sea-and-Sand Institute started in 1971 and since then they have managed to perform almost 13 000 sea rescues. According to the founder of Sea-andSand, Sparks Esterhuysen, Hermanus is the perfect spot for such an outdoor competition and sees the Overstrand as a sport and recreation paradise. The Walker Bay Active will include many activities such as a 2,5 km swim, jet ski competition, canoe marathon, mountain bike racing and a sharp dive competition from Dreunkrans (head first), which is just short of 20 m high. In a letter from the Overstrand Municipality (dated July 2012) the area manager for Hermanus, Don Kearney, already approved the Walker Bay Active and gave it their support. Support charity with ties Mrs Cape Town 2013, Chantal Witthuhn, and her husband Russell, from Kleinmond, attended the J&B Met on Saturday at the Kenilworth Racecourse. The couple was dressed by local Cape Town designer Hein Smit, who designed dramatic military Victorian styled outfits to fit the theme of the J&B Met: Made to Conquer Victoriously. The unique garments were made out of old, unused and unwanted ties to promote a fashion showcase Chantal plans to host in June to raise money for RoleModels Foundation to support the needy children of Cape Town. Her campaign to collect old ties, is called Save the Tie, Save a Child, and will be promoted shortly. If you have any old, unused and unwanted ties to donate to the project, contact Chantal on 084 518 5366 or look out for local businesses supporting her cause and drop off the ties.

Many visitors to the Flower Festival at St Peter’s Church were touched by the arrangements, depicting hymns and sacred songs.
Anna Vledder, Meg Dicks and Viv Shaw visited the flower festival on Saturday.
Jane Damant at an arrangement created by Christine Ross.
Favourite hymns depicted at St Peter’s Flower Festival CILENE BEKKER Floral artists did justice to the theme of the St Peter’s Church Flower Festival – Favourite Hymns – with the originality displayed in the floral arrangements depicting various hymns. Although the hot weather started taking its toll on some of the blooms towards the weekend (on display from Wednesday to Saturday), it did not detract in the slightest. In total, 21 hymns and sacred songs were floralised and each display was accompanied by the words of the hymn, the author and with some a bit of history about the origin of the hymn. One such an arrangement was the Hymn for Procession with Cross and Banners, or rather Onward Christian Soldiers. It was originally written by Pastor Sabine Baring-Gould in 1864. According to the infor-
mation WhitMonday was a festival day for school children who would march to neighbouring villages carrying a cross and banners. Baring-Gould penned this hymn (in 15 minutes) to encourage them in their march. This hymn became one of the most famous Christian marching hymns. Onward Christian Soldiers, marching on to war, with the cross of Jesus going on before. Christ the royal Master, leads against the foe; forward into battle, see his banners go. The focus of the hymn is in fact the spiritual battle – the foe being Satan, and not men. During the festival organ music as well as recorded hymns and songs played in the background; the church garden, with its assortment of stalls, was open for refreshments; Tobias Kotze gave a cello recital and the African Marimba band played classical music in the church on Friday night. It was a well attended event, organised
9
by Christine Ross – who originally came up with the theme for the festival – and Ann Harvett. The hard work of the 18 women involved in creating the arrangements, was clearly visible. The organisers wish to thank all the people involved. “It was so good to see the combined effort of many of our residents and parishioners. Those who arranged the flowers, those who contributed to the purchase of the blooms, those who worked hard in the kitchen to produce teas and lunches, those that showed visitors around the church, all pulled together to make this festival a happy and successful one,” said Christine. A similar flower festival was held in 2008 to commemorate the 140th anniversary of St Peter’s Church. This week’s festival was held in aid of St Peter’s and the Overstrand Hospice, and a cheque will be handed over in the coming week.
This arrangement depicted the marching hymn Onward Christian Soldiers. The accompanying photographs (next to the arrangement) were of children attending school in 1895, in a building called “Palehuis”, known as St Peter’s Church, which was the first school in Hermanus according to the leaflet, with WH Paterson appointed as headmaster. A few years later a more substantial building was erected.

Mall would ‘do wonders’ for Sandbaai EDITORIAL COMMENT Solution needed for polluted estuaries Marketing Hermanus as a mecca for tourists is a noble idea and many people involved in the tourism industry are hard at work doing just that. But what kind of message do we as a town send when some of our finest assets – our lagoons – become contaminated with high levels of bacteria due to repeated sewage spills. There have been unacceptable levels of pollution in the Klein River estuary through December and January because of a sewage spill at the municipal pump station inside the Hermanus Scout Camp which is close to the mouth of the estuary. A no swimming notice board has been put up at the Onrus lagoon because of the extremely high count of enterococci bacteria, which is a sign of faecal contamination. This was caused by a sewage spill from the Onrus pump station in January. And this has been an ongoing problem for years already. Rob Fryer, manager of Whale Coast Conservation, says the pollution situation in these estuaries is unacceptable and that the municipality should review its protocol for warning the public and initiating the appropriate response. “If we want to market ourselves as a tourist mecca, steps should be taken to ensure that sewage spills never happen.” These estuaries, or lagoon areas, are used for recreation by families, often with young children. We need to protect not only our natural assets, but our visitors and residents as well.
Think again – mall could be good for all I was unfortunately not able to attend the Sandbaai Mall meeting on Tuesday, but as a consumer and ratepayer I would like to ask the people to have a long-term vision before making a final decision on this matter. Long ago it was also decided against a railway line. Now we only have the road for transport and are paying extra for fuel and various other commodities. Since our stay in Hermanus we have made several trips to Somerset Mall and vicinity for goods not available in Hermanus or at a cost that is unacceptable. I am convinced that with good planning and cooperation everybody can benefit from such a project and that business people in Hermanus will need to have a good look at their own performance to secure business.
CONCERNED RATEPAYER
With reference to the Whale Coast Village Mall (WCVM): I am sure that the majority of ratepayers of Sandbaai would want the WCVM project to go ahead as soon as possible. Sandbaai East was slowly deteriorating and since the arrival of the Curro school, properties in the area have become more attractive. The addition of the WCVM would do wonders for Sandbaai. Overstrand Municipality would also have to look into the sewerage and roads in Sandbaai East which have been in a mess for years. Promises were made before the last election, to which a blind eye was turned and not much was done. In the front page article (Proposed malls: have your say, HT 30/01/14), I find it disturbing that the Hermanus business community is openly saying it lives off complacency and has a lack of vision and ability to survive in business competition. The comment that up to 30% of business will be lost in the CBD is being dramatised as there is no foundation to such a statement. The comment in Gerald Elske’s letter (Change the village square and streets into an appealing evening venue, HT 30/01/2014) that tourists say Hermanus dies at 13:00 on a Saturday and (slightly) wakes up on the Monday again is real. His suggestion to make the CBD more appealing by means of lighting up the area and offering late-night shopping on weekends could be a start to business inventiveness and progress. When someone goes across the mountain to a mall they take a full shopping list whether the goods are available in Hermanus or not, and that would be a
spill-over to small businesses in Hermanus once the mall is operational. The WCVM is also a solution for the elderly in Hermanus who cannot shop in the CBD and whom no one is taking into consideration. Although the fact that most members of the Hermanus Business Chamber do not want the mall might be relevant, it is what the residents of Hermanus and especially Sandbaai want and need that has more relevance. I wonder if the Hermanus Ratepayers Association (HRA) should consult home owners before they object to the mall. And anyway, it is being built in Sandbaai, so why is HRA objecting to projects in Sandbaai when we have our own ratepayers association? In Cape Town suburbs and especially in the Durbanville / Bellville area there are small malls within one kilometre of of each other serving small areas and they all survive. Therefore the Overberg Mall will also be a welcome addition to serve Hawston, Fisherhaven and surrounds. One should look at the cash injections and job creation in the Hermanus area which is in great need of these projects. Why are there always a few people trying to stop progress in Hermanus? In reading the objections in the Hermanus Times article it reminded me of the Checkers debate when it was suggested that Checkers be built in Sandbaai – are you the same people? Finally, to the men complaining about the malls: don’t underestimate the power of women when it comes to shopping malls – they want them.
ROY GROENEWALD SANDBAAI
Walk-way on Main Road Recently, standing at Lemm’s Corner on a Saturday morning, a friend passed the comment: It may be a construction site at the moment but wouldn’t it be wonderful if this portion of the road could be converted into a walk-way? It did not take long to catch her vision – no more speeding traffic and noise pollution but instead an expansive space and area of tranquillity with benches and deciduous trees planted in the centre to provide much needed shade and enhance the setting with natural beauty. Shops and restaurants could then open their doors onto a lovely userfriendly avenue, similar to those established in European cities and seaside resorts. This concept of transforming an historical part of the “old town” could only be an advantage to Hermanus. With the dynamics of a changing town and commercial progress, the CBD stands on shaky ground. The central Lemm’s Corner Market, once a popular destination for both visitors and locals alike, has a long time ago lost favour to an increasing number of country markets springing up in the suburbs. Currently two malls on the drawing board are making moves to muscle their way onto the map. For obvious reasons, and clearly spelt out in ‘Proposed malls: Have your say’, published in Hermanus Times dated 30 January 2014, the reality of these commercial developments can only be seen as a threat in pulling more retail away from the CBD. As it is, the business town has geographically shifted to the Checkers and Woolworths malls, and while these have created a frenetic shopping experience, it would be shortsighted to allow the history of a once famous and quaint fishing village to slip out with the tide.
Should the Main Road, stretching from Harbour Road to The Marine Hotel be considered a pedestrian mall by the town planners and powers that be, Hermanus and especially its CBD will undoubtedly benefit. Tourists, especially Europeans, are accustomed to perambulating along sidewalks offering a variety of speciality boutiques and pavement cafés. Hermanus already has a cornucopia of unique shops which are hidden by the constant flow of vehicles thundering down Main Road. The problem of deliveries could be controlled by limiting the size of these vehicles and permitting access at prescribed times. When the Somerset West Mall was initially constructed, it was prophesied by financial experts that it could become a white elephant. Instead, it almost created a ghost town of the CBD despite the charm of cobbled streets and tree-lined sidewalks. Only in recent years has the heart of this town started to show signs of recovery. Unfortunately, our regressive municipality does not bode well for proactive change (a typical example is the approval of the construction of Quarters Hotel, now an obtrusive reality, standing in the historical heart of the town). If they truly believe that the developers of the new malls will not allow any existing types of commercial shops etc to be duplicated in these new complexes, they are living in Cloud Cuckoo Land. Hermanus has a pot of gold in this unique and beautiful CBD seafront area which is recognised world-wide as a destination to visit. It is about time that the commercial community takes a united stand to create innovative and necessary changes before it is too late.
NOEL AND BETH HUNT
Rename Bosplasie to Hondeplasie I propose that Bosplasie has a name change to Hondeplasie. The continuous barking of dogs in this area has reached unacceptable levels. Free-roaming dogs that attack the domestic workers and postman are also common occurances. Law Enforcement seems to do little when reported. Oh, and the flies – is it only Bosplasie or is it the whole Hermanus that is affected by flies? If so, will the health department please do something to combat this plague as it is a health risk.

Only retailers can save CBD I have, once again, followed with interest the soap opera that has become the prospective development of the Whale Coast Mall. Every time the topic comes up the Hermanus Business Chamber (HBC) and Hermanus Rate Payers Association tell us that it will have a negative impact on the CBD. But these bodies only have the interest of central Hermanus and the CBD at heart. What about those of us who live in Sandbaai, Mount Pleasant, Zwelihle, Onrus etc? What about the access to facilities for these regions that do not require long travelling distances or the jobs that would be created for the people of the region? Competition has never been the death of the “high street” (CBD), even in Paarl (that everyone uses as an example). Lady Grey Street is still thriving, ask anyone who attempts to drive down it. The biggest threat to any “high street” is the increase in online shopping. Its impact is felt across the world with the closure of even big retail entities in Europe, America ... everywhere. What is the CBD going to do about that, try to stop the internet? Currently I buy my books, DVDs, appliances, furniture and clothing online. Why? Because it is cheaper (even with delivery), there are a wide range of items to choose from, meaning I can find what I am looking for without spending hours in the CBD, I don’t have to deal with surly shop staff and often delivery is fast, free and so are returns. The fact is that there are many factors that currently impact the CBD negatively without the mall developments coming into question. These include the lack and expense of parking (Woolworths and Checkers are impacting the shops in the CBD because they have free parking, who is going to pay for parking if they can avoid it). Furthermore, the buildings within the CBD are not in the best state with many landlords not considering the impact of the stained, crumbling buildings on the consumer. Some retailers are so focused on tourists that their items are outside the price range of the majority of locals. Many shops do not carry a wide range of items, the prices are quite high and the shop staff are often not educated about the products sold and in a minority of cases they are downright rude. If the HBC wants to achieve long-term survival for their members they might have to help their members move beyond leaflets as a marketing strategy and maybe create a website with a page for each member, so that people can access the details of each shop and what they offer. Then they should focus on the good old strategies that win over every consumer: a pleasant front facade to the building that makes you want to enter, friendly and knowledgeable staff that are willing to go the extra mile and good after-sales service. If the CBD wants to survive the monster that is the online retailer, they need to stop focusing on the mall developments and start looking at improving their own businesses and the service they offer. A happy customer will always return. Stopping the mall will not save the CBD as it stands; only the retailers operating in the CBD can do that.

How to help your friend with cancer Whether it be cancer, or any other terminal disease, there are ways to help. 1. Don’t ask any questions, sit down and enjoy a cup of tea. Allow him/her to talk and just listen. 2. Never refer to any experiences you have had with cancer, all cases are unique. 3. Do not offer any alternative medicine. 4. Do practical things – mow the lawn, fix the tap leaks, put out the rubbish, ask for a shopping list and do the shopping, offer lifts to
the doctor or hospital visits, or to fetch medicines from the chemist. Bring some food and don’t react if they don’t eat it, take the washing to the laundry, offer help to clean the house, wash the windows, or offer to pay the regular accounts – municipal, telephone, garden services etc. 5. Do not refer them to any religious leader if not requested. 6. Do not expect any reply on your inspirational SMS but keep sending them regularly. 7. Remember, normal life has
stopped for them, they are only focusing on the disease and the route it will follow. 8. Offer practical advice – get the book of advice at the Hospice for R30. 9. Just be there – you do not have to talk, just visit. Find out how to refer them to the Hospice where they will find wonderful help. Call 028 312 4679 From a friend.

Intussen, bel my by 028 316 3986 of 076 092 7205 en kom woon ons vergaderings by.

The McLaren Circus was packed to capacity on Friday evening 31 January.

Circus packed to capacity KERRY VAN RENSBURG A total of 3 187 Hermanus residents enjoyed the McLarens Circus magic this past weekend. Young and old filled the circus tent to capacity for each of the four performances and were captivated by the acrobats, fire-eater, clowns, aerial ballet, Australian daredevil, an assortment of animal acts, and more besides. Although the circus was packed to capacity from Friday evening 31 January, through to Sunday’s afternoon performance, a media statement from McLaren’s Circus indicated that a handful of protesters used the circus parking area and grounds to distribute pamphlets to people arriving for the show. Some visitors were apparently harassed and insulted as well. “We received various complaints from our
supporters with regard to this,” read the statement. “It was also discovered by our staff that the permit for the protest was issued for the same grounds we hired.” On Saturday the protesters showed up again, as did hundreds of people excited about their visit to the circus. The protesters once again tried to use the circus parking area and grounds, but were told by the Hermanus area manager that according to their permit, they had to move to the curb across the road from the circus grounds. The protest continued under the watchful eye of traffic and law enforcement officers. The McLaren Circus thanked the Overstrand Municipality for the use of the grounds and their help with their circus event. They also thanked the people of Hermanus for their support.
Stephan Matusik and his five children (from left) Sharon, Rachel, Sarah, Michelle and Christian, attended the McLaren Circus on Friday evening and were among the thousands of people who enjoyed the show while the circus was in town this past weekend.
On Saturday a group of protesters stood near the entrance to the McLaren Circus, which was set up in the open field next to Main Road. This group feels the animals suffer in the circus and that animals should be banned from circus performances.

Main Road on schedule but Diamond anniversary celebration – what is the recipe? crossings limited KERRY VAN RENSBURG A couple who retired to Hermanus 29 years ago so that they could “come and play bowls”, recently celebrated their Diamond wedding anniversary. ried in Wynberg in the Crawford Dutch Reformed Church on 19 December 1953. Sixty years later they are still together and a living example of true love and commitment. Although they celebrated their anniversary with family just before Christmas, the Hermanus Times only found out a short while ago about the milestone the Schickerlings have achieved as a married couple. Tienie served in the SA Defence Force for 38 years and specialised in anti-aircraft artillery. He and Yvonne lived and worked in Wynberg and Pretoria. Yvonne also worked for the defence force as a civilian, in an administrative position. They have lived in Onrus and been members of the Hermanus Bowling Club since they arrived 29 years ago. Tienie, who represented Boland and coached bowls for 20 years, is now an honorary life member of the bowling club. He believes strongly that sport shows your character. He is also regarded as “the best pancake maker in Hermanus”. Yvonne says he made the Guinness Book of Records in 1973 for his pancakes. He was based at Youngsfield Army Base at the time and made 2 260 pancakes in 11 hours 45 minutes. He had 18 pans going at a time and kept going until he made the world record. Tienie also used to help with the catering at the bowling club for special events like the women’s bowling tournaments. The Schickerlings have two children – their son John and daughter Christine – and three grandchildren. When asked what the secret is to their 60 year romance, Yvonne says with a smile: “We took things in our stride.” Tienie says: “I basically did all the cooking in the home.” Now that sounds like a good recipe for a long and happy marriage.
Construction work for the resurfacing of Main Road is on schedule, says Mike Bartman, deputy director of Overstrand Muncipality’s operational services. The curing period of the stabilised sub-base layer was successfully completed last week. The contractor started with the construction of the bitumen-treated base course this week. “During this stage of the resurfacing work, the pedestrian crossings will be limited because of the continuous movement of heavy construction vehicles,”
Completion of the CBD roadworks is still on schedule for the end of February.

National motorcycle racing enters a new era MOTORPRESS Motorcycle circuit racing enters a new and exciting era in 2014 with the formation of a standalone national championship tour, with a planned eight rounds in five provinces. The motorcycle only SuperGP Champions Trophy will be promoted and managed by GAS Sports and the race meeting format will be similar to the FIM World Superbike Championship. The headline category will be called SuperGP with support categories including SuperTwins, Super600, Super600M, SuperMasters and Superbikes. SuperGP is a unique South African category for 1 000 cc entry level evo rules machines (limited
modifications) that has been introduced to meet the need for a more affordable premier racing category. Super600 is a new evo rules category for 600 cc bikes, while Super600M is equivalent to the current Supersport category for modified machines. Superbikes is the existing national championship category for modified 1 000 cc machines. SuperMasters will cater for SuperGP riders aged over 35 on 1 000 cc bikes, complying with both the Superbikes and SuperGP technical regulations. The above five championship categories will all hold national championship status. SuperTwins will cater for 1 000 cc to 1 200 cc twin-cylinder
modified machines and will be a national challenge series. GAS Sports executive director Anthony Lauter said the new championship and categories have been 10 months in the making, with lengthy discussions with Motorsport South Africa (MSA) and the motorcycle importers and distributors with cost containment being a key priority. Lachlan Harris, the national director of the Association of Motorcycle Importers and Distributors (AMID), said the planned SuperGP Championship Trophy was a significant step in the right direction, with the potential to provide a strong sports marketing platform for the motorcycle brands to leverage, while ensuring the barrier to entry and cost
to compete were more favourable for manufacturers and competitors. The opening round of the SuperGP Champions Trophy will take place in March with rounds being run monthly thereafter, culminating in October with the championship finals for the premier categories being run as support races in the planned SA round of the FIM World Superbike Championship. The full calendar, subject to MSA approval and inscription requirements, will be announced later this month. MSA’s chief executive of operations, Adrian Scholtz, said MSA’s management and board of directors were delighted with the envisaged partnership with GAS Sports.

Despite loss, Hawston remains second on log LLYLE TAIT Hawston Cricket Club played Elgin the past weekend in a 50 over encounter. Hawston won the toss and elected to field first. Hawston bowlers kept the pressure on the Elgin batsmen but unfortunately a few dropped catches became very costly at the
end. Elgin scored 207 runs in their 50 overs. Hawston’s best bowlers were Myron Claasen (3/37 in 10 overs) and Heino Bailey with (2/33 in 10 overs). Easton Benjamin (1/32 in 10 overs) and Dewan Hamilton (0/24 in six overs) kept things tight. This was one of the few occasions that Hawston’s top-order failed and only Philip Olifant scored 30 runs. All the other batsmen chipped in
but Hawston fell short eventually and scored 147 runs, thereby falling 60 runs short. This was Hawston’s first loss in seven games and they remain second on the first-division log. Hawston would like to thank all the supporters and look forward now to their 20/20 campaign starting on 15 February at Hawston against Helderstroom.
LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL: The Hermanus Bowling Club business league that started on 21 January, is well on its way towards the grand finale taking place on Sunday 9 February at 09:00. Group A’s teams have completed their games and 12 teams will compete on Sunday. Group B games started on Tuesday and the top 12 teams will play against the top 12 of Group A in the final play-offs. Everyone is welcome to attend, and the restaurant and bar will be open. Contenders in the finale will play a total of three games to determine the ultimate winner in the business league. MegaMakeover winner What you lose on the one hand, you gain on the other. This was the case with Michele Riley, who lost an amazing 20 kg, and gets the opportunity to drive the new Toyota Etios for the next two months. Six contestants originally embarked on this Fitness and Lifestyle challenge by Proactive Fitness in June last year and six months later their “transformation” was more than obvious at the prize-giving ceremony last Friday at La Pentola restaurant. Here the results of their overall weight loss, cardiovascular fitness, strength and flexibility improvement was unveiled. Each participant received a host of prizes sponsored by many local businesses and the main prize, a Toyota Etios, was gener-
ously sponsored by Johan van Zyl from Hermanus Toyota. “On behalf of everyone involved in this life changing contest at Proactive Fitness, we would like to thank all of our sponsors for their support and congratulate all six brave contestants, including Riley,” said Mathew Browne, owner of Proactive Fitness. Proactive Fitness is now focusing its attention on the youth at the launch of its next fitness contest (Teenage Transformers) on Friday 7 February at 18:00 at Proactive Fitness. If you are interested in entering your teenager in this professionally supervised fitness contest, then contact Browne on 084 358 9827 or 028 313 2074, for details on how to enrol.

GREAT CATCH: Joshua Gericke caught this 18 kg leervis in the Hermanus lagoon in the channel opposite the Prawn Flats launching site on 31 December. According to Bruce Eastman, Joshua’s father-in-law, he caught the fish on a 5 kg maxima leader with a 5,5 kg braid main line using a 21 g chartreuse and white bucktail jig, and fought it for about 20 minutes. He then released the fish.
