Hijack drama five caught
Kalfiefees
JANINE VAN DER RIET Armed men hijacked and robbed a cigarette truck of cigarettes (to the value of R300 000) and cash on Thursday morning 31 July in Zwelihle.
VOLLE PROGRAM OP BL. 5
According to the Hermanus Police, the suspects then drove with the truck to a quiet street near Camphill in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley where they unloaded the cigarettes and cash into awaiting vehicles. The suspects then took off in one of these vehicles and drove into town where a high speed chase between police and the robbers ensued. Due to excellent police work the getaway vehicle was forcefully stopped on the R43. According to a police statement one of the policemen who was involved in the chase was driving from town towards Sandbaai when he spotted the suspects at the Sandbaai intersection. The policeman then drove over the centre island and managed to cut off the vehicle of the suspects as this was the only way to stop the speeding vehicle. Continued on page 2.

Increase in armed house robberies JANINE VAN DER RIET Another house robbery took place on Friday afternoon in Vermont while the owner of the house was out shopping in town. This will now be the seventh armed robbery in the area in the past few weeks. In the latest robbery, the woman (56), upon her return, found her domestic worker lying
on the kitchen floor who told her she was assaulted by two men who then fled the scene. The domestic worker claimed that the suspects took her cellphone and a loose standing safe in the house. The home owner immediately phoned the police. The control room gave the information received through to officials out on patrol. Captain Steenkamp Vermeulen and Sgt Fundile Mavatha responded to the informa-

tion and they quickly arrested three suspects with the safe. A fourth suspect, and later the domestic worker herself, were also arrested by constables Jason van Staden and Ilse Fisher. The suspects have appeared in the Hermanus Magistrate’s Court. The ages of the suspects are 45, 31, 28 and 24. According to lieutenant Fadila September of the Hermanus Police, this robbery is not linked to other armed robberies in the area.

Hijackers caught after accident in Main Road From page 1: Five suspects were arrested on the scene. The road coming into town was closed to traffic while police officials investigated the scene. Lieutenant Fadila September says the police officials found an undisclosed amount of cash and two boxes of cigarettes in the possession of the suspects. The other cigarettes and money looted
were not found. One of the two men who were in the truck, making the cigarette deliveries at spaza shops in Zwelihle, was injured in the hijacking incident. Many readers and eyewitnesses have commented that the swift response from police, the K9 dog unit, traffic and law enforcement is highly commendable.
26 people arrested During the past weekend, acting station commander Lt Col Francois de Wet and members of the Hermanus Police had a successful weekend with operations carried out in Zwelihle, Mount Pleasant and Hawston. Illegal shebeens and drug houses were targeted and a total of 26 people were arrested. Fines were also issued for drinking in illegal shebeens. Drug houses were searched in Hawston and a 32-year-old man was arrested for possession of dagga and tik.
Liquor was also confiscated. De Wet and members worked night shifts and the commitment to fight crime is their priority. Members have been doing vehicle patrols on a 24/7 basis in all the areas to fight crime. Lieutenant Fadila September of the Hermanus Police says they still need the assistance of the community to work together with the police. “The public must attend the community police forum meetings so everyone can be informed about crime in the area.”
The police are investigating cases of hijacking, armed robbery and reckless and negligent driving. This case will be investigated by the organised crime unit. The five suspects appeared in the Hermanus Magistrate’s Court on Friday 1 August and will remain in custody until 12 August for their next court appearance.

Sharklady almost drowns Kim ‘Sharklady’ Maclean with her doctor after she was released from hospital in Spain.
Kim ‘Sharklady’ Maclean almost drowned while on a diving excursion on a recent trip to Spain, off the island of Tenerife. And to make matters worse her father tragically died on the day she was released from hospital. Kim had left South Africa on 15 July after being invited to accompany a friend who was ill, to help sort out her affairs in Spain.Once on the island, Kim investigated the tourist attractions and diving possibilities, and was thrilled to hear of an opportunity to dive with the huge loggerhead and leatherback turtles. “On the 21st we headed out on a rubber duck and travelled about 20 minutes until we came to this cove, with crystal clear water and dozens of dive boats as well as large motorised yachts anchored everywhere,” says Kim. “There were dozens of snorkelers all over and in amongst the anchored boats. Out of eight divers it was only myself and another lady from France who were experienced qualified divers and the rest were all given a 20minute briefing on how to scuba. I was amazed that this was of the norm and allowed. “I rolled off the rubber duck at the go-ahead of my dive master and was amazed at the beautiful warm crystal clear water. I dived down to about 10 metres and after 15 minutes I saw my first turtle, a leatherback, and then five minutes later, another one. “Then I heard a rumbling noise and looked up, and the next thing I felt I was being dragged,” says Kim. “I had no control and my
mask came off my head. I only remember being dragged at least 10 metres. This is the last I remember before I came to in an ambulance.” One of the other divers on the boat visited Kim in hospital where she had spent five days in ICU and three days in a ward. “I had been hooked by a boat pulling its anchor and a diver had gone to the surface to signal the boat to stop. I had at this stage taken in water and was at near drowning.” Once divers got Kim to the surface and onto the rubber duck, they tried to administer oxygen, but there was no oxygen in the cylinder. She was then helped by another operator who gave her oxygen whilst transporting her to the beach to be taken by ambulance to the Hospiten, the private Hospital. “For me and from what I can remember it was a near death situation.”
Kim says she was plugged full of needles to help drain the water and prevent pneumonia from developing in her lungs. “I also suffered heart failure, and on the Monday night my heart rate hit 199, so I had to be given an injection to stop my heart completely and to then restart the heart to bring it back to a normal heart rhythm.” On Saturday 26 July her specialist booked her out of the hospital, but she had to report back on 28 July to get her fit to fly certificate, which she duly received. “The hospital and the nurses and specialists were fantastic and I was in very good hands.” However, on her first day out of the hospital, Kim received the heartbreaking news that her father, Don McLean, had died tragically. “All I wanted to do was to return to my hometown Hermanus.” Kim would like to thank all of those who kept her going by sending whatsapp messages and phone calls. “It was the only thing that kept me going. I am back safe, and can only say that when one faces a near death situation, one looks at life from a very different angle, and appreciate it so much more.” Kim hopes to be back in the water soon, “but will take one step day by day”.
Alyson’s table setting does it again CILENE BEKKER Alyson Kessel, renowned floral display specialist and author, yet again excelled in her field, by winning the award for “The table you most want to dine at” at the Cape Legends/ShowCook Inter Hotel Challenge for the second year running. All in all 21 hotels competed, culminating in a prize-giving banquet on 25 July at the Mount Nelson. Alyson represented Birkenhead House in the table decor category. She says to create the Alyson Kessel with look takes a lot of pre- table setting. preparation and contestants have from 11:00 to 16:00 on the day of judging to set their table. The main feature of Alyson’s table was the table cloth. “It consists of coppery brown silk
leaves, and came all the way from America, courtesy of a friend of the owner of Royal Portfolio. “The centre piece tree was supposed to be all whimsical and mossy and was surrounded by groups of natural flowers in a variety of little glass bowls. “I mainly used tulips, narcissus and orchids, and also used orchid blooms in the beautiful beaded gold napkin ring.” Of her two-time win Alyson says the whole event is a lovely experiher awardwinning ence and the joy she gets out of it she attributes to her original mentor, Annette Kessler, who is the Chief Editor of ShowCook. “She is the one who set me on this floral display path in which I have now been involved for 10 years.”
The tablecloth was a main feature of the setting and consisted of coppery brown silk leaves.

LUCKY WINNER: On the day before the beginning of the fast, Mogamat Kamedien went to buy a Pieman’s Pie at Onrus Minimark. He settled for buying two at a special price, which qualified him to enter in a microwave lucky draw. “I was reluctant to enter, thinking although I need a new microwave the chances that I will win are so slim.” To Kamedien’s surprise the manager of Onrus Minimark phoned him on 23 July to notify him of his win, which was handed over to him by Myra Booysen, the manager on duty.

Meeste mense was net bekommerd oor die honde, vertel Albertus Eagleton, Natasha se man.

Lize inspires young artists On Wednesday 28 July, artist Lize van der Walt visited Hermanus Primary and shared her passion for capturing light and life on canvas with a class of Grade 3 learners. She explained to the children how light, the sky and clouds are ever changing and alive and explained how an artist pours their feelings and emotion into their work, making each artwork unique. The landscape the young artists tried their hands on was the sky behind the school building and Hoy’s Koppie. The children’s eyes lit up when they saw that Lize painted the clouds with her fingers and could hardly wait to do the same in the lesson that followed the practical demonstration. – ORSELLA SCHNEEBERGER

Thumbs up for HAWS community outreach KOMMENTAAR
Rocks not manmade Unfortunately your respondent Avril Steenkamp completely missed the point. Natural public coastal rocks are not manmade pathways. Many of us have contributed to memorial plaques set into the man-made coastal path. It is a wonderful idea and is acknowledged as one of the to quote “acceptable special areas designated for the placing of personal memorabilia”. We reiterate that our beautiful natural public coastal rocks are not.

WHEN NATURE CALLS... Photographer Ken Moore from Southern Right Charters whale boat captured this photo of a whale relieving himself on 29 July. Ken says he has been taking photos of whales frolicking in the bay for decades, but this footage was a first for him. PHOTO: KEN MOORE
Ordeal of a brave 90yearold lady I went to a well-known seaside resort in Eastern Cape two weeks ago for a friend’s 90th birthday – 100 friends and family flew in for three days, great celebrations. But I want to share what happened a week before with you, as her life-long positive attitude, even during this dreadful experience and thereafter, has always been amazing. The scene: My friend’s remote panic button and cellphone are right next to her chair by the TV. At 20:00 she went to the kitchen to make a cuppa tea. As she switched on the kettle, a blanket was thrown over her head with a rope around her neck (we subsequently found the leather-thin rope had been cut off her handbag). Somebody right next to her was holding her tight. Of course one can imagine the reaction and confusion suddenly all is dark and bedompig. The man holding her said “Ouma, moenie so baie praat nie, die ander hou nie daarvan nie”, so she realised it was a burglary. The rope was tight and then loosened once she asked him to let her have some air. Exactly at midnight she came to her senses (she did not realise she must have lost consciousness for a few hours), lying on her back on the dining room carpet. Every room in her house has a clock. There was no way, she realised, she could come upright from that position without assistance. It took her ages to roll onto her stomach and slither like a very slow snake to get to the remote. She immediately noticed all her curtains were open and house lights were on everywhere. She had closed the curtains as one always does at dusk. She pressed the red button and waited, 30 minutes later, nobody came. Then she said to herself, silly, I should have pressed the brown remote, which she did. Within a minute she saw torches outside the windows – security had arrived. Laughingly, she asks us all whether we can still scream! She screamed and screamed that security must come in through the ga-
rage. She pressed the garage remote. Of course, within the next 15 minutes the police, her sons who farm in the district, daughters, all were there. She told the police she could not tell them anything except what you read above, and they kept on and on talking to her, asking questions. Surely there must be a clue? A clue? Except for the one holding her whom had spoken Afrikaans she never saw or heard the others. Eventually she said, ah ha, the one holding her was wearing white tackies, blue polka dots, I think, and blue rubber edge. I could see his foot at the bottom of the blanket next to mine. “We know who it is,” said the police. “He was let out on parole last week!” The burglars had come in at a small shower window that she was still to close before bedtime. Off the police went, and phoned within an hour or two to say they had found some of her belongings in his house. He took them to the houses of four or five other men where they also found belongings (remember, this was in the early hours of the morning). Then this lot took the police to a house of a foreigner living in that town. In his stove’s oven they found some of her big diamonds and more loot. She informed the police she did not want to hear follow-ups until after her birthday celebrations. Thank you to SAPS Humansdorp, for speed and efficiency. I would normally not share such a story in a newspaper, but it was splashed all over Eastern Cape newspapers, radio, etc. I also happened to witness on Friday how the SAPS Hermanus handled the “stolen car” that came down Hemel-en-Aarde Road and tried to get away by turning left to Hermanus. Brilliant work done, SAPS. A big thank you to all connected to SAPS, security companies, etc., for your dedication and unselfishness, often risking your own lives to prevent crime and save lives. Also thank you to Hermanus Times for keeping us in touch.
Your report on the community outreach programme in Zwelihle of Hermanus Animal Welfare Society (HAWS) – HT, 31 July 2014 refers: HAWS’ initiative both humbled and inspired me. The society deserves great support. Not only did it promote: - Cooperative effort by numerous and various roleplayers; - Local business involvement/support; - Community awareness; and - The general welfare of people as well as domestic animals; It also resulted in: - A learning opportunity for people with animals; - Satisfying basic hunger needs of people; - An improved HAWS and Zwelihle community relationship; and - A hands-on rescue/improvement in the lives of animals. In all, a most impressive, comprehensive and efficient project which had all the ingredients required for a successful welfare initiative. Congratulations to chairperson Ilse Smith, the management committee as well as the volunteers. Hermanus is indeed fortunate to have HAWS as a community resource and deserves increased community support.

Beide my tannie en oom is reeds oorlede.

Every little regular donation helps make a difference At the end of 2009, yet another bridge school was formed in Hermanus. Nothing unusual about that, but what was unusual and is worth telling, is that the group, originally consisting of Malcom Baldwin, Bryan Burnside, Terry Westbrook and myself, Max Leipold, decided to chip in R100 every time they played, and donate the proceeds to the Overstrand Hospice by way of purchasing tickets for the Club 600 draw. The composition of the group has changed over the years but its support of Hospice has never waned and to date this group has bought R16 800
worth of tickets. In financial terms, the return on the investment has not been very rewarding but that’s not the point. Without requiring a substantial dip into the resources of any of the members, this arrangement has helped Hospice deliver an essential service to less fortunate souls in our community. It’s been a painless way of doing our bit and we encourage other bridge groups to do something similar; be it for Hospice or any other charity of their choice.

shop responds: Every morning when our manager arrives, she has to clean up in front of the shop. It would appear that shopkeepers nearby dispose of their waste by dumping this near the Municipal bins. We have asked for these to be moved because they attract both vagrants and other waste disposal bags. Every morning our manager has to sweep up the mess made by the vagrants who scavenge through the bins at night. We have hardly any rubbish and may put out one black bag per week, sometimes only one every two weeks. For reasons only known to the Municipality no cleaner ever cleans the rubbish in the little alley leading from Mitchell Street to the parking area behind our shop. Often the manager, myself and various of our volunteers take a black bag and pick up all the empties,KFC packets and other rub bish which is dumped next to our building. We would really appreciate an apology and may be a donation to our cause for this false accusation.

Crime increase We have recently relocated to Hermanus hoping for a better lifestyle and living, of which we heard Hermanus had all that to offer. Unfortunately our house has been broken into twice in the past two weeks which concerns me tremendously. Yes, we do have crime all over in SA but Hermanus can do more. I am now living in fear every day of not wanting to leave my house nor wanting to stay in it alone. Is something being done about the increase in crime as we have now heard from neighbours that it’s worse than we thought.

Owner of Paradise Park’s point of view KERRY VAN RENSBURG The outstanding amount owed on rent by residents living permanently at Paradise Park currently stands at R209 000. The R950 rent/levy they pay each month, includes water, and when residents do not pay their rent, or do not pay on time, the owners of the resort are unable to pay their water bill and all the expenses that go along with running a 21 hectare camping site and holiday park. According to Raymond Schonegevel, owner of Paradise Park, and his daughter Helen Potgieter, who manages the park’s office and administration, one resident has not paid rent for a year and another tenant has not paid a cent, including electricity, for four years, which amounts to R143 000. Every time this resident flushes the toilet, we are paying for it, says Potgieter. But what is significant is that despite situations like this, and many others it seems, Schonegevel (86) has not asked these people to leave. A resident who has seen first hand how patient Schonegevel has been towards the residents says: “People have forgotten that he helped many of them when they had nowhere else to go. He was good to them. When they couldn’t afford to live in town, they found a home here. He told them they could stay as long as they liked. He never chucked me out when I was struggling.” Schonegevel says the figures quoted by Nazir Chafeker, the attorney for the Paradise Park Homeowners Association, in the Rental Housing Tribunal’s court case which was heard in their small court at the end of June, and published in the Hermanus Times last week, are exaggerated and do not take into account the actual number of rondavels that are let out to holiday makers. Chafeker says in his argument for the complainant (PPHOA), that the respondent (Schonegevel) lets 36 ron-

of last year they were paying between R70 000 and R80 000 a month for water. From May this year the water bill climbed to R100 000 and this excludes sewerage. They have to pay a basic water charge for all 294 sites, which comes to R32 340. This infrastructure charge has to be paid even when the campsites are not occupied. According to Bram van der Harst, now former chairperson of the PPHOA, their attorney Chafeke, representing them in the case currently being deliberated by the housing tribunal, comes courtesy of the ANC. Despite the genuine concerns, such as the proposed massive increase in rentals, raised by the homeowners in this case, the whole issue seems to have been used as a political football. Schonegevel says some residents who are part of the PPHOA told him “they never signed up for this”. Schonegevel and his family have to pay their lawyer out of their own pocket, and according to a resident close to the family, this money could be better used to pay the water and electricity bills. Over and above the day to day running expenses of the resort, the Cape High Court ordered Schonegevel to provide the municipality with written time-frames for regularising its building, sewerage and town planning transgressions. According to the municipality, this has been done and provides for full compliance by 31 October 2015. A year ago, when the PPHOA sent their deposition to the Housing Tribunal, Dolf Olivier, Schonegevel’s son-in-law said: “The bottom line is that at the current levy there is no way we will survive. Paradise Park is a business and cannot continue subsidising residents.” Schonegevel says his property is valued at R29,5 million. “The last thing I would want to do is sell the whole park. I have put too much into this place.” The tribunal’s final ruling is imminent.

NEW WHEELS: Camphill School welcomed their new 16seater minibus on Wednesday 30 July. The purchase of the new bus was made possible thanks to a generous dona tion from the RolfStephan Nussbaum Foun dation. Elaine Davie, the school’s senior fun draiser, says the foundation has supported Camphill School for several years, but the donation they received for the bus was by far the foundation’s biggest gift to them. The administrator of the foundation and one of the trustees attended the handover of the bus. Toyota gave the school a discount on the purchase price of the vehicle. Free dance classes now offered as part of Hermanus High’s school curriculum Dance has been introduced as an extra school subject at Hermanus High. These optional classes were added to the school timetable at the start of the third term. Learners who have signed up for these dance lessons, attend classes for four hours a week with Marina Rautenbach at the Dance Education Centre after school hours. They can specialise in ballet or contemporary dance and are not required to pay any class fees. Rautenbach assures that students attending Marina’s School of Dance will continue to receive vitally important international exposure. The introduction of dance as a free school subject at Hermanus High has come about as a result of many years of extensive research by the Western Cape Education Department on the im-
portance of dance. Rautenbach says: “Although it takes 10 years of training to become a dancer, the contribution of dance to develop a learner’s discipline, posture, co-ordination, concentration, confidence, fitness, movement skills, memory, imagination, music appreciation and emotional maturity is phenomenal.” She adds: “We all know that every child cannot become a sports star. Dance is a wonderful substitute and an opportunity to develop the sporty or not-so-sporty young ladies.” Learners from the high school taking dance as a subject will have formal practical and theory exams each term, so that the school and the parents of the these learners can monitor their progress.

NATURE MATTERS The Drip Cave (“drup kelder”), which derived its name to De Kelders, is the only fresh water cave along the South Af rican coast, made famous by the visit of Lady Anne Barnard in 1798. In those days there were magnificent stalactites, many of which were thoughtlessly removed over time. Inside, only a few meters from the high water mark, is a remarkably strong underground river that supplies the town of Gansbaai with fresh water. The drupkelder and other caves along this coastline can be visited on the Perlemoen Trail. Text and photo adapted from www.perlemoen trail.com

Astronaut at local Science Week Sunita Williams, a former US astronaut and ISS commander in 2012, will be one of the main attractions at this year’s free public lecture as part of National Science Week on Tuesday 12 August at 17:30 at the Hermanus Municipal Auditorium. Williams will provide an insight into life on the international space station by way of a DVD she made hours before returning safely to earth with the Russian Soyuz spacecraft in November 2012. This fascinating visual tour takes you through the different sections of the space station, providing great insight into the
everyday challenges of weightlessness, moving and working in confined spaces, exercising as well as other, seldom thought about, facets of space living. This leads them to the exciting possibility of space tourism. How would you prepare your body and mind for such an unusual once-in-a-lifetime event and what could you expect to experience up there? What are the financial implications? For the more down-to-earth nature lovers, there will be an eye-opening look at Patterns in Nature corresponding to Patterns in Numbers. Well-known objects such as fruit and flowers show an amazing correlation
to number sequences. National Science Week is an annual event that takes place from 2–9 August. TALK ON ASTROPHYSICS WITH H.E.S.S. AT HAC TONIGHT: Gam ma rays are the most energetic form of radiation and are produced by the most extreme objects (such as neutron stars and pulsars, supernova explo sions, and regions around black holes) in the Universe. A single object undergoing a gamma ray burst can momentarily shine 10 times brighter than an entire galaxy which contains hundreds of billions of stars! Only a handful of terrestrial observatories are doing astrophysics in the gamma ray range and the most powerful is in SA’s backyard in central Namibia. Derek Duckitt of the Hermanus Astron omy Centre visited the HESS (High En ergy Stereoscopic System) site in Na mibia and will be doing a presenta tion on this subject at the monthly meeting of Hermanus Astronomy Club (HAC) on Thursday 7 August at 19:00 at SANSA. OAK CONCERT: Overstrand Arts/Kunste (OAK) will be hosting the Capella Concer tante wind ensemble from Austria in concert on Sunday, 17 August, in the Civic Auditori um at 15:30 on their second visit to the Overstrand. Their programme will include works by Mozart, Bizet, Stephenson, Dvorak, Johann Strauss and various other composers and promises to be a wonderful afternoon of music. The designers, who have created these awardwinning displays for the past 21 years, also paid tribute to former president Nelson Mandela with a pixelportrait made of dry protea flower heads in eight natural colours. Ac cording to Davidson, the SA stand in the Great Pavilion has been one of the most popular over the years. This talk is supported by the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund.
PUBLIC PARTICIPATION PROCESS DEA&DP Ref Nos. 16/3/1/1/E4/4/2035/14 & 16/3/1/4/E4/2036/14: PROPOSED INDUSTRIAL AND HOUSING DEVELOPMENT ON REMAINDER OF PORTION 1 OF FARMCOMPAGNIESDRIFT NO. 436 BOTRIVIER Applicant: MHZAHandling CC Notice is hereby given of a public participation process in terms of the Environmental ImpactAssessment Regulations (GN Nos R543, R544, R545 & R546 of 18 June 2010, promulgated under NEMAAct No. 107 of 1998 as amended, to carry out the following activities. Listed Activity: Government Notice R544 & 546 Listed activities applied for: GNR544/9,11,18,22,23,24,26,37,39 & 40 and GNR 546/2,4,12,13,14,16,19,24 & 26. The proposed industrial and residential development may include the above activities listed in terms of the NEMA EIA Regulations. EnviroAfrica Overberg has been appointed to undertake the Basic Assessment Report process for the proposed project. Please note that exemption from certain provisions required or regulated by NEMA Regulations is made in terms of Regulation 50 of the EIARegulations, 2010 (DEA&DP NO. 16/3/1/4/E4/2036/14) Project Location & Description: The project entails the rezoning of Remainder of Portion 21 of the Farm Compagnies Drift from Agriculture 1 to Residential Zone 1 to allow for the establishment of ~132 residential erven ranging from ~200 to ~450 m2; as well as to Industrial Zone 1 to allow for the establishment of 19 industrial erven, one Business Zone 1, one Community Zone 2, 4 Transport Usage Zone 2 and six Open Space Zone 1 erven, interspersed in the whole development to create the necessary corridors along drainage lines on the property. The whole property is 17.7680 hectares in size, but an area of ~1.5ha has been put aside for the proposed toll plaza at Botrivier. Thus the area to be developed is ~16.3ha comprising of the following: (a) 95 Residential Zone 1 erven (~450m2) with total area ~4.66ha or ~28.6% of property; (b) 28 Residential Zone 1 erven (~350m2) with total area ~1.17ha or ~7.18% of property; (c) 9 Residential Zone 1 erven (~200m2) with total area ~0.23ha or ~1.41% of property; (d) 1 Business Zone 2 erf with total area ~0.23ha or ~1.41% of property; (e) 19 Industrial Zone 1 erven with total area ~3.65ha or ~22.4% of property; (f) 1 Community Zone 2 erf with total area ~0.14ha or ~0.86% of property; (g) 6 Open Space Zone 1 erven with total area ~3.03ha or ~18.59% of property; (h) 4 Transport Usage Zone 2 erven with total area ~2.97ha or ~18.2% of property; This equals 163 erven in total on the property and the layout is such that there are five possible proposed access route alternatives to the different sections of the property. The main access to the residential area of the property will be located from the R43 to the north of the N2 between the N2 and Botrivier proper. An entrance is also proposed under the railway line from Botrivier proper and two entrances located on the N2The last access is proposed from within Botrivier to a portion of the property that will only be accessible from the western end due to the location of the proposed toll plaza area on the property. In addition to the above, the normal infrastructure of potable water supply, sewage reticulation, stormwater, refuse removal and electricity will be supplied by upgrading and linking to the existing services of Botrivier by the Theewaterskloof Municipality. SPECIAL REPORT: 2 000 KM WITH ISUZU’S POWERFUL KB
Road test : Gone hunting with Isuzu’s KB FRANS LE ROUX Hold on, before you say anything. I know the latest Isuzu KB is by no means ‘new’. It is however only my second chance to sample the true bakkie-specialists’ latest offering. Just over a year ago, I spent a couple of days testing a white KB300 LX in and around the Western Cape. After some extensive gravel road usage I was convinced about its capabilities. With this in mind, I was looking for a vehicle to test on my recent hunting expedition. After searching far and wide for a suitable long distance tester, the friendly staff at Thorp Paarl gave me the keys to a top-spec KB300 LX 4x4 doublecab. With only 5 000 km on the clock - the bakkie was still as good as new. On a rainy Saturday morning I picked up my bronze-coloured Isuzu and excitedly hit the long road to Prieska. Prieska is significant for me and my family because we have been visiting family there for close on 30 years. This year however, was different in the sense that I felt we had the perfect companion for this unforgiving terrain. We left Paarl and headed for Ceres where we would later linkup with the N1 just outside Touwsriver. The road to Touwsriver is beautiful and should be experienced by more people. Strong winds made the winding road more tricky, but the KB felt surefooted along the way. The latest KB uses a strong and trusted 3,0 F 4-cylinder turbo diesel engine which produces 130 kW and 380 Nm. In current ‘bakkie’
terms, these figures are on par. Isuzu however, still uses a 5-speed gearbox, but thanks to taller gearing the KB’s fuel consumption is really impressive. My overall figure for the entire trip was 10,1 F/100 km. Continuing on the N1, nightfall approached at some speed. Our overnight destination was Beaufort West and while driving at night I was impressed by the KB’s headlights. They offered crisp lighting in a very dark Karoo night. Cruising at highway speeds, levels of wind noise were low while Isuzu’s distinct engine noise was well muffled. Early on Sunday morning we ventured further into the Northern Cape where cellular reception is scarce. While heading towards Victoria West, we made our first fuel stop. After a quick 65 F of diesel, the KB was filled to the brim. On this stretch the 5-speed bakkie returned figures of just over 10 F/100 km. Take into consideration that the KB weighs 2 tons, and it only has 5 gears. I had to doublecheck and pull out the trusty calculator. These are highly impressive consumption statistics. After we put some serious distance between us and the fairest Paarl, our final obstacle lay stretched in front of us. A long winding stretch of gravel was the only thing between us and some fun family hunting. Ninety kilometres of harsh Northern-Cape ‘stofpad’ was certainly no match for the powerful and stable Isuzu. A short, steep, rutted mountain pass tried to scare the KB, but it just powered on. Reaching the farm without any hiccups whatsoever, our week of hunting bliss was about to kick off.
The new Isuzu KB300 Dteq took me on a 2 000 km road trip with the utmost comfort. Visit your nearest Isu zu dealer and get behind the wheel of the latest KB. PHOTO: FRANS LE ROUX So far, after travelling close to 900 km, our KB300 performed admirably. Fast forward six days and our trip back home is about to start. If you know Northern Cape hospitality, there is no such thing as too much meat or too much of anything for that matter. After spending hours preparing our meat for its Paarl-voyage, we soon began to carefully construct a way of fitting everything in the back of our KB. For the bakkie-haters among us, the versatility a double cab bakkie offers you is unmatched in the vast motoring world. Because of the KB’s good ground clearance and massive rear seating quarters, almost everything you own can fit into the back. If you have done the impossible of filling the cargo area, you can still fit three
adults in the back. Thanks to low slung seats and a higher roofline, even the tallest of occupants had a comfortable experience. Meat and bags packed, we grabbed our hunting equipment and headed back to Paarl. The only adjustment needed on the KB was some more air in the rear tyres. This is something everyone should pay attention to, especially if you weigh down the back when loading. The trip home went by quickly and effortlessly. I was expecting a slow and tiresome trip due to all the weight but to my surprise it felt the same. The KB powered on and took us home without any increase in fuel consumption or decreased lack of comfort. My conclusion came after we
unloaded the bakkie after our ten hour trip. I was amazed and convinced that for the first time in 20 years we took the best ‘weapon’ on our annual hunting trip. The ruggedness offered by the Isuzu KB is unrivalled. To top it all, I would have to say that the trip was more comfortable than I could ever imagine from a bakkie. Brand new this KB300 D-Teq LX 4x4 manual would set you back R473 400. This demo model is now selling for R429 995. Isuzu offers a brilliant 5 year/120 000 km warranty and a solid 5 year/90 000 km full service plan. This is substantially better than the top-selling Hilux. For more information on any Isuzu, Chevrolet or Opel product, contact Thorp Paarl on 021 872 2101.

Etios crosses over to the wild side QUICKPIC Combining the rugged good looks of an SUV with the fluent drive, fuel efficiency and maneuverability of a hatch, the all-new Toyota Etios Cross is ready to write another chapter in this budget beater’s success story. In less than two years, Etios has racked up sales in excess of 45 000 units and in the process has become entrenched in the South African automotive lexicon, regularly charting on the top three bestseller’s list. Etios can claim a number of ‘bests’, including taking the title for top-selling sub-B segment sedan as well as being Toyota South Africa’s best-selling passenger car range. In fact, such is the success of Etios (currently sitting at close to 30% of the sub-B passenger car market) that Toyota has been able to recapture much of the Tazz sales volume that it enjoyed prior to the discontinuation of that model in 2007. Much of the success of Etios can be attributed to five main factors: 1. Engine performance – a major purchase driver for Etios is its engine size. Boasting a 16-valve DOHC 1,5 F engine, all models come standard with a five-speed manual transmission. Outputs are pegged at 66 kW of power @ 5 600 rpm and 132 Nm of torque @ 3 000 rpm. This translates into a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 11,3 seconds for all models including the new Cross. An excellent power to weight ratio also contributes to its sparkling performance. 2. Fuel consumption – despite the bigger capacity powerplant and the impressive performance, the Etios still returns a laudable average consumption of just 6,0F/100 km. 3. Space – the rear seat can be
Thanks to a raft of body and cabin modifications and embellishments, the new Etios Cross allows buyers to tap into the tough image of an SUV without incurring the cost. PHOTO: QUICKPIC classified as a true 3-seater due to its expanded flat design which maximises space, and improves ease of entry and exit for 3 adults. The rear floor is also flat, maximising the space for the passenger in the middle seat. In addition, the Etios boasts a multitude of practical interior storage spaces including seven cup holders that can accommodate 1 F sized bottles as well as a 13 F glove box with a cooling function. The sedan features a bestin-class boot capacity of 562 litres. 4. Peace of Mind – it’s a Toyota and that means that Quality, Durability and Reliability (QDR) are a given. Backing this up is a full complement of safety kit including ABS, EBD, dual front airbags and an immobiliser. 5. Affordable price – the Etios is
still one of the most competitively priced vehicle ranges. Prices start from R127 800 for the Etios Xi hatch (with air con), topping out at R159 800 for the new Etios Cross. It’s worth noting too that Etios has benefited from continuous refinement of the package. Thanks to a raft of body and cabin modifications and embellishments, the new Etios Cross allows buyers to tap into the tough image of an SUV without incurring the cost. With the focus firmly on practicality and efficiency, the Cross is just as user-friendly as its standard brethren but with the added robust appeal of a crossover. The new Etios Cross is based on the Xs hatch, which is generously endowed when it comes to specifications.
• The masculine face of Etios Cross comes courtesy of a distended new grille design in matt black incorporating an unusual powder grey grille guard that extends all the way into the bumpers, mimicking the appearance of bumper overriders. • The chunky anthracite front bumper is further enhanced by oversized fog lamps with integrated turn indicators and accented in a grey frame. The Etios Cross also gets a ribbed front scuff plate – once again in powder grey. • Completing the front end is a revised headlight cluster with a fuller design which melds better with the new grille. • In profile, the Etios Cross gets the full “off road” treatment in the form of black cladding (with em-
bossed Etios Cross logos) which extends halfway up the doors. Silver shaded accent garnishes adorn the lip of the cladding. • Prominently protruding matt black over fenders clad the wheelarches, providing visual continuity and further amping up the newcomer’s ‘SUV’ persona. • Re-designed side mirrors feature turn indicators. • Bringing up the rear, the back door gets a stylish garnish strip with embossed Etios Cross logo. Mirroring the frontal treatment, the rear likewise gets a new matt black bumper with a trapezoidal silver grey, ribbed scuff plate. The tail lights are also unique to the Cross and feature prominent ‘puzzle piece’ reverse light lenses. • Final touches to further beef up the Etios Cross include a roof spoiler, multi-spoke diamond-cut 15” alloys and a set of roof rails also finished in the de rigeur powdery silver. The latter are fully functional and able to support 50 kg of luggage or even a bicycle. • Two new colours are exclusive to the Etios Cross - Inferno Metallic (a vivid orange) and Jet Grey Metallic. Key interior features (over and above the Xs grade) • Inside, the Cross edition gets all-black interiors with new sporty seat fabrics featuring special white stitching and embroidered Etios Cross logos. • A tech-enhanced, upgraded double din audio system – as with the unit found on Xs models, this system comes with USB and AUXin ports but adds extra functionality in the form of Bluetooth to facilitate hands-free mobile phone operation. • To further uplift the cabin appeal the dashboard receives piano black metallic finishing and chrome detailing around the air vents.

Frugal Mitsubishi Mirage arrives in South Africa
QUICKPIC
Mitsubishi Motors, for the first time in South Africa, has entered the ever-popular A-Segment. The Mitsubishi Mirage ticks all the boxes for the supermini segment – great quality, generous specifications and minimal fuel consumption. The Mirage builds on the success of the model line overseas, and has demonstrated exceptional sales in international markets. Wynand Pretorius, Chief Operations Officer at Mitsubishi Motors South Africa, comments: “The Mitsubishi brand is on a continuing renaissance in South Africa, and with the all-new Mirage we are opening our brand to a new buying audience who place affordability, quality and specification at the top of the buying decision. And, when everything else seems more expensive, to launch a superb value car like the Mirage with its big heart, makes perfect sense for the South African market.” The new Mitsubishi Mirage enters the local market with the full might of the Mitsubishi brand behind it – a badge which signifies exceptional reliability, integrity and practicality from one of Japan’s foremost automotive manufacturers, and one which has produced some of the world’s most iconic vehicles. “People know us for tremendous off-roaders and exceptional durability, and we are now set to attract a
new demographic to the Mitsubishi brand with our first-ever supermini. We know just how competitive the supermini segment is in South Africa and as such we have ensured that Mirage is aggressively priced to take the fight to more established marques in the segment.” “We are launching Mirage with a very competitive R1 899 per month finance proposition which includes 12-month comprehensive insurance, making overall car ownership that much more affordable for younger buyers,” concludes Pretorius The five-door design also sees strong styling creases on the flanks met by either 14- or 15-inch wheels, and the pert rear end features a sassy design theme and characterful tail-light clusters. Compact proportions – the Mirage is just 3,71 metres long – enhance manoeuvrability, as does the exceptionally tight, class-leading turning radius of just 4,6 metres. The Mirage is powered by Mitsubishi’s surprisingly sprightly 1.2litre, 3-cylinder Dohc petrol engine. The impressive power – 57 kW at 6 000 rpm – is delivered to the front wheels via a five-speed manual transmission. The 100 Nm of torque peaks at 4 000 rpm. Average fuel economy on the combined cycle in the South African context is just 4,9 litres per 100 km, with CO2 emissions of 115 g/km. The new Mirage is fitted with a 35-litre fuel tank which equates to potential range of over 700 km. The new Mitsubishi Mirage range
is fronted by the new 1.2 Mivec GL, which includes standard equipment such as keyless entry, a radio/ CD audio system, colour-coded bumpers, a third rear brake light, electric power steering with a tiltadjustable steering wheel, a multiinformation display, front electric windows and manual air conditioning with a pollen filter. Fourteen-inch steel wheels are available as well as a full-size spare. The Mirage 1.2 Mivec GLX represents the mid-range model, adding a number of features to GL specification. These include a fuel-efficiency indicator in the instrument panel, 15-inch alloy wheels with a full-size alloy spare, colour-coded mirrors and door handles, electric side mirrors, a cheeky rear spoiler with integrated third brake light, a leather-bound multi-function steering wheel, an accessory socket and a USB port added to the audio system. Topping the new Mirage range is the 1.2 Mivec GLS, which features keyless starting to complement the keyless entry, rear electric windows, auto up/down for the driver’s window with an anti-pinch function, fully automatic climate control and front fog lights. All new Mitsubishi Mirage models are backed by Mitsubishi’s comprehensive 3-year/ 100 000 km warranty. Service intervals are set at every 15 000 km, and a 2-year/ 30 000 km service plan is included in the retail price. New Mitsubishi Mirage starts at only R124 900.
Average fuel economy on the combined cycle in the South African con text is just 4,9litres per 100 km, with CO2 emissions of 115 g/km.

On Tuesday Ladies Day the golf course saw 36 players. The competition was the Ann Wil liams Cup which was an individual stableford. Winning the silver division on a terrific 40 points was Rusty Demmer and coming out on top of the bronze division was Pat de Villiers with 35 points. Wednesday was men’s day and 115 gents competed in a betterball bogey plus, with this week’s victors on +12 JD Filmalter and partner Colin McCulloch. In second place, just one point behind, were David Schutte and Andy MaCrae. They had 7 two clubs and ball pool paid to +8. Best individual round at nett 67 was recorded from Gert Keuler. On Saturday 118 players took to the course and they enjoyed a farmers weekly (betterball stableford). Winning the day by counting out the pairings of Colin Woodhatch and Don Ad ams, and Frans Senekal and Floors Venter were old campaigners Peter Cawdry and Rob George, all on nett 62. There were 5 two clubs and the ball pool paid to 66. Again, there was no jackpot winner and it is now standing at R1 225. Lastly this week the club pays their respects to two wonderful gentlemen who sadly passed away last week: Stan Wrigley and Harry Janc zik. The club will miss you both and thank you for your years of friendship and support for Hermanus Golf Club. Keep calm and go golfing.
