PROMISING FIGURES: POSSIBLY RECORD NUMBER OF TOURISTS

Hermanus experiences bumper season KERRY VAN RENSBURG While tourism role players are still analysing the finer details of the summer high season, for many in the industry it has been busier than ever. Blake Albert, GM of the Windsor Hotel says: “It was a very successful season. We have been on the go since late July and have indeed experienced five record months in a row. Occupancy rates are up 35% in that period. We did not experience the two-week dip that normally occurs in the beginning of December.” He says there was a marked increase in foreign tourists in this time. “The season shows no signs of letting up until the end of April and the forward bookings for next season are extremely positive. “One must say ‘well done’ to the municipality for coping with the influx of tourists to the town and keeping the town clean and safe. And ‘well done’ to the people of Hermanus for

making us one of the most popular places to visit. Long may it last.” Celeste Scheepers, manager of the Hermanus Tourism Bureau, says their accommodation bookings peaked between 26 and 31 December. She says: “This was the period a lot of enquiries came via the tourism bureau and most of the time we could not assist. Scheepers confirms that the self-catering establishments were booked up first, with B&Bs mostly booked out between 24 and 31 December. She says the visitors were “mostly local with some international guests”. There were very few walk-ins at the bureau. Most people booked and confirmed accommodation before arrival. Tours, activities and adventure packages that proved most popular included tree-top slides and quad biking, kayaking, shark-cage diving, and hikes, walks and activities for children. Scheepers says accommodation establish-

ment owners were “very busy and exhausted”. She says the town definitely looked much busier than last year. “With regards to trends, we are definitely experiencing people booking their accommodation on-line via the Internet. Visitors are staying for shorter periods of time and two or more families are enjoying the holiday together. Mary Faure, chairperson of Hermanus Tourism says that these trends confirm that Hermanus is growing as a tourism destination. “We still need to confirm final numbers, trends and prospects with the parties involved in tourism promotion and development, but I believe that we have had a very successful season in Hermanus and the Overberg in general. We enjoyed superb weather and apart from the expected growth in accommodation occupancy rates, restaurant covers and business sales, the greater Hermanus infrastructure and support services coped ad-

mirably with the demands of, what could be, a record number of tourists this season. “Our municipal support services must be thanked, especially the traffic department and the water, sanitation, electricity and refuse removal services, our local police and other security and protection services and, of course, our Hermanus residents who all displayed utmost patience and courtesy during the welcome “siege” by tourists. “The Hermanus Tourism office staff must also be commended for their extra efforts and excellent services that underline our seriousness in becoming one of the prime tourism destinations for local and foreign tourists to the Western Cape. “We will now evaluate and analyse the tourism statistics, successes and constraints of the past season in detail with those concerned. We will, as appropriate, report back to the public, through the Hermanus Times and other media, on these findings and possible recommendations,” concludes Faure.

Be careful during spring tide A spring tide rip current warning was issued by the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) effective from 2 January until 9 January.

The full moon spring tide causes stronger than normal rip currents around the coast. The NSRI urged for extreme public caution around the coast for the next day or two. ) To report a sea rescue emergency, dial 112 from a cellphone

On 26 December, Neil Malan took this photo of Kammabaai from his house and says: “We have lived here since 1994 and never seen the sea so rough (sometimes higher, but never so angry). He says he saw a woman venture into the sea being swept off her feet and then be ing rescued by three fully clothed men. He thought it was Ghanie Kui per, who swims most days, but she says she did not go swimming the day after Christmas as the surf was too strong. The lifesavers’ lookout stand was also wrecked and washed away by the turbulent waves. PHOTO: NEIL MALAN

Fewer incidents during New Year’s Eve celebrations JANINE VAN DER RIET New Year’s Eve celebrations were strictly monitored by law enforcers and police in the Overstrand area and a few partygoers went home with a fine to complement their possible hangover the next morning. In Hermanus, Hangklip, Kleinmond and Gansbaai, Overstrand Traffic, fire and rescue services, worked with the police stations in the areas where sizeable amounts of liquor and fireworks were confiscated. On New Year’s Eve, 750 ml of hard liquor

was confiscated, 16 bottles of cider, four Smirnoff Guarannas, 24 beers, five bottles of wine and 12 bottles of sparkling wine/champagne. A total of 167 assorted fireworks were also confiscated during the night. Overstrand Law Enforcement fined three people for illegally setting off fireworks, fined 13 people for drinking in public, two for urinating in public, one for abusive language and another fine for making a fire in public without a permit. They also arrested three people for being drunk in public.

According to Lester Smith, acting director of protection services, there were fewer incidents compared to previous years. No incidents were reported at the permitted firework show areas at Birkenhead, Grotto, Hawston, Kleinmond, Uilenkraalsmond and Stanford. “Overstrand Fire and Rescue attended to 10 veld fire incidents between 21:00 and 02:00 on 31 December and 1 January. However, all of them were brought under control despite strong winds. Four of the fires were confirmed to be started by fireworks.”

Of the 14 accidents reported during the festive season, 10 were minor accidents. Two were serious, but no fatalities were reported for the festive season to date.

No murders were reported during the past festive season in the Hermanus area, but housebreakings and theft still remain a problem. “A number of housebreaking and thefts, mostly because visitors leaving expensive property outside and doors and windows open, were investigated,” said lieutenant Fadila September of the Hermanus Police. September could not supply actual figures, but said that theft/burglaries were reported over a wide area in the Overstrand, and that there

were more incidents of theft than usual at the Onrus Caravan Park. Although no complaints were received about unruly or drunken behaviour at pubs in and around Hermanus and Zwelihle, September confirmed that eleven people were arrested for driving under the influence during the festive season. Lt Col Francois De Wet thanked the members for their dedication and commitment during this festive season and all the other roleplayers, including law enforcement and the traffic department for their assistance.

2013 Gansbaai matriculant excels at Kovsies University of the Free State vice-chancellor, Jonathan Jansen, is beaming with pride about an investment he made in human capital. A poverty-stricken top 2013 Gansbaai matric student, whom he lured to Bloemfontein with an all expenses bursary, has excelled in her first year by attaining seven distinctions. Jansen made headlines in January last year when he grabbed the Gansbaai Academia head girl ahead of Western Cape universities, after reading about her plight of not being able to find a bursary to study despite her five As in the 2013 matric examination. She has passed her first year BSc Behavioural genetics with flying colours, getting

seven distinctions out of the twelve modules of the course. Bianca says she would not exchange her first year at Kovsies for anything in the world. “It helped me to move out of my comfort zone,” she said. Jansen’s call to offer her a bursary changed her life completely. “Initially I did not believe it was him. I was also not sure whether I should move so far from home but Gansbaai Academia principal, Tommy Wilson, insisted that I accept the offer. She has not disappointed Jansen. “Bianca has two special qualities that fit perfectly with the mission of Kovsies,” says Jansen. “She is a top academic student and she is

truly inclusive in her approach to other students.” “Her parents and her school did a great job of preparing her for living and learning in the real world outside of the comfort zones in which so many remain stuck. I have no doubt that Bianca, with these qualities, will rise to become a great leader in South Africa and the world.” Jansen told News24 that the university has bursaries available for “top students in financial need”. And now that the 2014 matric results have been released, Jansen says they’re “already on the lookout for other Biancas in all nine provinces.” - EDDIE BOTHA / NEWS24

Stephan Pretorius, eienaar van OK Minimark in Voëlklip, se eerste feesseisoen as besigheidseienaar in Hermanus was ’n goeie tyd. “Ons is goed ondersteun. Alhoewel die toue soms vreeslik lank was, is kliënte baie vinnig gehelp.

Volgens Bertus van Zyl, vloerbestuurder by

‘Eskom salesmen’ con resident A Vermont resident was very surprised when he was conned by two “very professional salesmen” during the festive season. The resident was at his house in Vermont when two unknown Indian men in their mid-thirties, smartly dressed, casually entered his house. They showed him a presentation of Eskom for reducing the cost of electricity by installing solar panels. According to lieutenant

Fadila September, they told him that he must pay R18 500 and then a monthly instalment of R430 for four years. They requested his bank card to swipe and he handed it over. “They had a portable speed point with them and the resident typed his pin number in and the transaction went through. “They left and gave him an instant water heater to use. He then received a SMS

stating that the amount of R18 500 went of his straight account and not the budget account and he contacted the fraud division and informed them about the incident,” September said. The man immediately made enquiries to the company Global Energy in Cape Town and was informed that the company did not exist. The matter was reported to the bank and the Hermanus SAPS.

Ferdi Pietersen, algemene bestuurder by Gateway Superspar, beaam hul syfers is definitief beter as laasjaar. So ook Bern van Niekerk, eienaar van Eastcliff Spar. “Daar was definitief meer mense hierdie jaar,” sê Van Niekerk.

Enige belangstellendes kan vir Deon bel by 082 818 8983. Die dag sal R100 per persoon of R400 per vierbal beloop.

At a meeting held last year, the ward committee for Ward 7 (Sandbaai and Hemel-andAarde Estate) unanimously agreed that the mini transfer station in Sandbaai should be dismantled and removed in its entirety. Originally instituted for the convenience of weekenders and occupants of holiday homes who had no place to leave their household refuse when departing, the mini transfer station never really succeeded in fulfilling this purpose and posed several operational challenges. Amongst others, permanent residents took to dumping builders’ rubble, garden refuse and redundant furniture at the site – a practice which is not only illegal but also attracts “scavengers” and causes “dumpers” to be harassed by people looking for hand-outs. Seeing that the ward is being serviced by a reliable and efficient system to remove household refuse and given that the mini transfer station would have to be moved in any case to make room for a church that will soon be erected in the vicinity, it was decided that the site should be closed down altogether. Residents are reminded that household refuse should only be placed out for collection on the actual collection day. Those who let their homes from time to time should make arrangements with a neighbour/acquaintance to do so on behalf of holidaymakers/weekenders who depart prior to the official refuse collection day. Residents are reminded that only one bag of garden refuse is allowed per household per collection day. All excess garden refuse and other “abnormal waste” such as builders’ rubble, unused furniture, hazardous materials and discarded electronic equipment must be transported to the main transfer station in Mbeki Street, the new parallel road that runs between Mount Pleasant and Zwelihle, by the residents themselves. Any enquiries with regards to the closure of the mini transfer station can be directed to Don Kearney, area manager, Hermanus Administration on 028 313 8112.

The mini transfer station in Sandbaai is going to be dismantled and removed.

JAN-HENDRIK COETZER Doris Maree, teacher, esteemed Hawston community member, and co-author of the first book about the history of Hawston and its people, passed away early Sunday morning (4 January) after losing her battle with cancer. Doris (69) was diagnosed with cancer about a year and a half ago, and although doctors gave her only four months to live according to family members, Doris fought until the very end. Doris was born in Hawston and started her teaching career at Hawston Primary in 1964. She retired from her position as teacher in 1994. In 2003 she co-wrote the book Hawston: Tussen Berg en See, together with Gladys Gillion and Pamela February. (The book was translated into English last year.) In 2006 Doris was also one of the nominees for ward councillor in Hawston. She was the founder of the Women’s Empowerment Organisation where she taught skills like needle work, embroidery and fabric painting. Julius Swart, principal at Hawston Primary, says the passing of Doris is very sad news to so many. “We really lost an icon who did everything she could for so many people. She will be truly missed.” In 2012 Doris joined the Hermanus History Society and chairperson, Angela Heslop, describes her as a special person who was greatly committed to her community. “Her commitment impressed me. She wanted her community to thrive and over many years facilitated a variety of projects apart from being a committed teacher.” Doris leaves behind her husband, Ruben, her daughter Ruby, two grandchildren, Tage and Alé, as well as her mother, Maggie Sias (95).The funeral service will be held on Saturday 10 January at 11:00 at the United Church in Hermanus. The family wants to give special thanks to Dr Paul de Flaming at Mediclinic, Prof Hennie Botha at Tygerberg Hospital and Hospice.

Overberg among top five districts The Overberg district, with a pass rate of 88,1%, is one of two districts in the Western Cape which are under the top five districts in the country after the 2014 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examination results were released. The province’s other district on this list is the West Coast with an 88,4% pass rate. A total of 82,2% of learners in the Western Cape passed the 2014 NSC examination. In 2013, the pass rate was 85,1%. According to Education MEC Debbie Schäfer, this is a good pass rate, especially given the indications that, in many respects, the examinations were reportedly more difficult. “We are also especially proud that the Western Cape has again achieved the highest percentage of bachelor’s passes in the country, with 38,8% of learners achieving this quality pass. We have also improved our mathematics pass rate from 73,3% to 73,9%. The pass rate for physical sciences decreased slightly by 1.9% to 70,7%.”

Plan ahead and make back to school demands less daunting Many parents are financially and physically exhausted once Christmas and New Year are over, so the back to school demands that are now upon us, can be quite daunting. With children waving stationery lists under our noses,

it’s time to “get a grip” and make a start. Most supermarkets have huge stationery stocks at this time of the year, but shop around and see if the speciality stationery stores have what you need at a competitive price. Children love all their new things at the start of the school year, and get quite excited about it all. With stationery lists adding up to about R400, make sure you get value for money. The battle to find school shoes, shirts and socks in the right size can be a challenge, especially when the shops are crowded with every parent in town trying to get their children ready for school. Keep calm and smile at those in the same boat as you. And if your child needs extra help to improve reading, maths and concentration, reduce your stress and their anxiety by enrolling them in extra classes. Plan ahead for the back to school demands, and ensure that your children are well equipped to handle the 2015 academic year.

Northcliff House College matric learners and staff celebrating their success (back from left) are: Barbara Liefeldt (vice princi pal), Vivienne Mitchley (principal), Nicholas Maeder, Gerhard Coetzee (teacher), Dirk and Claus von Thelemann, middle: Abby Heese (head girl and top achiever) and Hannah Coombe. Front: Crystal Fiver, Keagan Seal and Dillon Arendse (head boy, most academic advancement and second over all).

KERRY VAN RENSBURG “We did brilliantly. A 100% pass rate and some excellent distinctions,” said Vivienne Mitchley, principal of Northcliff House College, after the matric results were released on Tuesday morning. She was beaming as she handed out the National Senior Certificate (NSC) results to her matric class of 2014 as they and their parents gathered at the school at 12:00. Mitchley says they are one of only three schools in the Overberg Education District that achieved a 100% pass rate. In the 11 years Northcliff House College has had matric learners, they have missed their 100% pass rate only once.

Mitchley says they had 12 fulltime matric learners in 2014 and one part-time learner; 65% of them earned a bachelor pass, which means they have the marks required to enrol at a university. The remainder of the learners achieved diploma passes. The school’s top achiever is Abby Heese, who got distinctions for maths literacy, English and design. While Mitchley is proud of all her learners, she is particularly proud of Hannah Coombe, who despite struggling with dysphraxia, which impacts a person’s ability to read, write and concentrate, earned a diploma pass. “I never doubted that she would make it,” says Mitchley.

Gansbaai Academia mis A netnet JAN-HENDRIK COETZER Gansbaai Academia het vanjaar ’n 89,5% slaagsyfer behaal.

Tommy Wilson, skoolhoof, staan hier by Monique Grebe.

Fireworks – fun for people, not so for animals Did I see and hear right? Just before midnight on the eve of the New Year, eNews broadcast an interview on television with a policeman in Gauteng. He, the policeman, made the statement that it was okay for the public to let off fireworks for an hour before and after midnight to see in the new year. He also stated this was now legal but that at any other time you would need a permit to either buy or sell fireworks and if you do not comply you could be fined up to R1 500 for the first offence. I don’t care if it is a local, newly instituted by-law in Gauteng, but to broadcast it on national television, shows the moral disregard that some of our media are responsible for. I do not condone any fireworks other than professional pyrotechnics in a strictly controlled environment away from animals. Amateurs who think that they are specialists in the art of pyrotechnics should be heavily fined and the sale and setting off of fireworks to the public, totally banned and heavy penalties instituted for those who break the laws. I do believe that Hermanus and its environs have had a ban on amateur pyrotechnics for a number of years, although it is difficult to control when there is an influx of holiday makers and visitors during the festive season. Maybe there should be warnings posted throughout the town and district during peak holiday season reminding and warning visitors that it is illegal to ignite and possess fireworks and that they will be fined if they break the law with the possibility of jail time if they harm other persons or animals. My staffie, Stan, is so traumatised by fireworks that he will attack and even

chew through a door just to get away from the noise of fireworks, and this is all thanks to Kimberley Municipality’s own celebratory fireworks display a few years ago where no warning was given to the public. Alas, this happened again on New Year’s Eve here in our new home here in the Overstrand. As midnight approached there were fireworks going off (some as loud as a mortar bomb) all over Onrus and Vermont, especially near Davies pool and the campground. The cacophony created by the barking and other sounds of animals in distress was alarming. After phoning the local police, who acknowledged that fireworks and the setting off thereof was illegal and that they had had numerous complaints, did they confirm that they had sent out some of their units to investigate. Only at about 01:00 did the fireworks stop, unfortunately too late for many of the animals upset all over our area whose owners had gone out celebrating. As midnight approached, we had to sedate and lock both our dogs away from the noise and mayhem created by the noise. Speaking to our vet this week, it seems that the fireworks problem is a yearly occurrence and extremely difficult to enforce and control even with the threat of being fined. I therefor appeal to anyone who considers setting off fireworks to realise the consequences of their action and remember, that any animal that you have traumatised by your action may turn on you, and whose fault will that be?

Sy was ’n kleinniggie van my. As hy dink hy besit die see moet hy werk soek by die Maritime kusbestuur dept. – HENK ) If you can afford to run a car you need to consider all expenses including parking fees. And don’t in convenience others. Happy Christmas. ) Perhaps money spent on legal fireworks displays should rather be donated to the Hermanus Animal Welfare next year. – LINDA ) Was very impressed with SAPS and Law En forcement at Onrus beach on New Year’s eve. Well done! What a job to contain so many people, some already drunk and argumentative on arrival. Gen erally far less crackers / fireworks being let off in the streets this year, for which our canine friends are grateful. ) This is for you, new neighbour in Mountain Drive: How inconsiderate to send a team of men with chain saws to cut your pavement trees on New Year’s day! You are not yet in residence to hear the noise! ) Well done Piccolo’s Pizzeria, Rossis and Lizette’s Kitchen for being open on 1 January. Full B&Bs but no place else for our guests to eat. Let’s collabo rate more between guest houses and restaurants to meet the needs of guests in Hermanus. My arms is gebrand. Sulke onverantwoordelike gedrag deur volwasse mans is onverskoonbaar. Klappers behoort verbied te word. Wetstoepassers het geen beheer daaroor nie. – ERNA BOSMAN, VERMONT ) Mount Pleasant: litter lying everywhere close to the main road is shocking. Pick it up and put it in a bin people. – JOE ) Hermanus Times, the priority of your reporting doesn’t add up. Local teenage bodyboarding sen sation Tristan Roberts at only an unbelievable 16

wins World Championship and gets back page, while an arb / ran dom pic for “Happy Holidays” wishes gets front page! You could have still wished everybody on the same page, just smaller, and given our local hero the publicity he de serves. Please apply more atten tion in future when reporting our locals doing incredible things. – TRACY DAY (Point well taken.

ED) ) To Cynthia S: Yes, in other countries maybe no one will speak Afrikaans, but worldwide most peo ple can understand English. My husband learnt a lot of Afrikaans since he came to SA, but, under standable, he struggles to read the language. Thank you Hermanus Times, for some English arti cles. – DELENE ) A car hooter is for: use as a doorbell: opinion of neighbours in Sandbaai. Three households on one property hooting all day long. Care less than a hoot for their neighbours with all the noise and disruption. Municipality, what am I to do? Con structive advice please. – FED UP ) About the Afrikaans in the local paper: We need to move with the times. Sorry, but Afrikaans is not recognised everywhere nor by everyone. We at tract many foreigners to our country and more so to beautiful Hermanus. We are able to communi cate with our visitors through one common lan guage English. Sticking to one language, which is not understood by all, stifles growth/develop ment. Let’s move with the times. Things are happening out there and 95% of it is English. Cynthia writes beautiful English. Keep at it Cynthia, and let’s get more English into our local newspaper. – PAT ) I’m so glad ‘Sandbaai common’ is sold. Hopeful ly some of this money will be used to finish the long awaited Hermanus Country club. – A. BERG ) Agree with Riekert’s letter about parking for em ployees in CBD. The few bays in Mitchell Street which were free, are now also paid parking. Where are employees supposed to park without spending a fortune every month on parking? Just another way for our greedy municipality to pocket even more money.

) Looking for a great read? There is a fantastic new book out, titled In Those Days, The Story of Joey van Rhyn Luyt. Her story started when she married, in 1915, the owner of the Marine Hotel, P. John Luyt and together they made it a premier destination. It is an interesting read, includes pho tographs and covers many years of the Marine Hotel, Hermanus, interesting and important guests and Joey’s life. This book is a must, especially for those interested in history and Hermanus, and makes a perfect gift. Enjoy. Baie Dankie. – V. However, there is a definite business opportunity for somebody to set up service to do independent evaluation of bike repair needs with out doing actual repairs; this will reduce many of simple repairs that escalate to a virtual bike rebuild once in shop. ) This to thank Thea Albertyn from African Jewels in the Village Square, Hermanus, for replacing my Pandora bracelet for free. Would it be possible to plant some trees in the Hermanus and Mount Pleasant cemeteries. My dog almost became owl food

Walking on the cliff path with my dog is one of my favourite things to do in Hermanus. Dog owners and their well-behaved four-legged friends on leashes are well equipped with pooh bags and water before they stroll on the paths, meeting other friendly dogs and watching rock rabbits who seem to be not afraid of them, knowing they are under control on lead or very well trained. On Friday 5 December at 19:00 on the path leading down to the little bay covered in pebbles and mostly grey round stones right next to the one leading to the tidal pool in front of the Marine Hotel, Kompas and I were walking down the stairs....and suddenly I heard a swooosh sound from the sky and something swooped down on Kompas making a “barking” wack-wack-wack sound and flew up to the rocks where it settled next to a bigger owl. I was sure we were walking too close to their nest and looked around to see if I could spot an owl’s nest. When I could not see any nest, we continued walking down the stairs “promising” the owl couple we don’t intend harming them. After 30 seconds the swoosh noise came again from behind and the owl attacked Kompas again. This time I saw my dog’s hair flying when the owl tried to grab him behind his neck. The owl flew to the opposite cliff staring at us from a rock ledge. I grabbed Kompas in my arms while begging the owl to leave us and tried to cover Kompas with my torso while turning and running upstairs to get away. Lo and behold for a third time the owl attacked Kompas while I held him tight to my body. I screamed, waving my arm and the owl flew to his companion. Being a tough little Border Terrier, Kompas not once cried and was not hurt, but to me it was a very scary experience, although we both knew it was awesome to be part of nature. Kompas weighs 7,5kg and could well be seen as prey for the Cape Vulture Owl with his coat colour being the same as that of rock rabbits, as well as his size similar to the fully grown ones.

Mostly sunny conditions are expected for the weekend with a chance of light rain passing through from next week. With the current high pressure conditions we can also expect very dry conditions together with heatwaves which are ideal for the development and spread of veld fires.

First aid kit at businesses should be compulsory In the time I have been privileged to live in the Overstrand, I have seen the transformation and developments that have changed our space from a sleepy but cuddly village to a thriving small town. I feel the next logical step is to make sure that all businesses that have direct dealings with the public have one person on duty with some first aid skills.

To the youngsters who misbehaved - shame on you!

At the moment we are getting some strange reactions. Taking offence that anyone has the audacity to be taken ill or ignore the injured or ill person in the hope they may disappear in a puff of smoke. A first aid kit at each business should also be made compulsory. Where there are people there is always the risk of little mishaps. Let’s not ignore it.

Joyce just turned 90, and still feeds the neglected pets JANINE VAN DER RIET The Hermanus Times Operation Brakkenjan’s own angel turned 90 on Wednesday! Joyce Rawstorne, who has been helping dogs and cats in Hermanus for more than 20 years, was born in England and has been around the world from Germany to Zimbabwe. She even hid under a tree from fighter aeroplanes as a 15-year-old during the Second World War when Germany occupied France. She used to work for the British government, has lived in Zimbabwe and has sailed from Southampton to Cape Town. Joyce climbs into her car twice a week and drives into Zwelihle to feed some of the hungry, sick animals in the township. She collects scrap-food from restaurants on Sundays to feed the dogs the following day.

over fences onto sidewalks. Do the consequences of broken glass where children walk not bother you? Residents are too afraid to confront these misbehaving youngsters in fear of retaliation. To the parents of these youngsters: “Did you not teach your children to respect property, public or private? Is it acceptable to you that your children are such an absolute nuisance and a disgrace to the towns where they come from? Please keep your children at home until they have grown up. “Do not rent a home under the false pretences that you will be staying there and then allow 18 youngsters in there!” We the residents, love the vibe of the holiday season in Onrus, where families come to have a great time. Children are safe here and it is a wonderful place. If you can’t show respect, then rather stay at home and destroy your own towns and homes.

PUBLIC MEETING : MUNICIPAL DEMARCATION BOARD WARD DELIMITATION CONSULTATIVE PROCESS

Municipal Offices HERMANUS

To those young people who invaded Onrus River Village this holiday season and abused our hospitality – shame on you! When the holiday season approaches the Council and the Ratepayers Association spend a lot of time sprucing up Onrus River. The sidewalks are mown, the grass at the beach is regularly watered – often by hand – and arrangements are made to remove waste from the public bins more often than usual. Then we wait to welcome visitors. What a disaster! We were swamped by a horde of young people who seemingly did not know how to behave. You vandalised property, breaking off street names, overturning concrete street names and breaking down sign posts. You broke the concrete trash bins by rolling them into the streets or down the parking area at the beach. Who do you think pays for these repairs? You roam the streets in packs throughout the night, using loud, foul language, openly drinking in the streets and throwing bottles

C GROENEWALD MUNISIPALE BESTUURDER

BEKOMMERDE KOPER

We are so sorry about the inconvenience caused to the customer. This is due to a technical issue with the bank and a reversal is normally done within 24 hours directly from the bank. We would be happy to assist the customer with the bank and would like to ask that he/she forward us their details to ensure that we can assist or alternatively he/she can contact us on 0800 11 22 88.

JARETT VAN VUUREN GENERAL MANAGER - PICK N PAY WESTERN CAPE

Focus on the serious ‘accommodation’ problems at our court, not on the whistle blowers! Your continued reportage on the court’s problems are appreciated as this seems to, finally, get some ministerial mandarin’s attentions. But a false attribution to me in the headline (“Local lawyer deems SAPS and Court illegal,” HT, 18 December), may be seriously embarrassing to my professional reputation. I never said or wrote that the police station or court had illegal structures. I gave the Times’ copies of letters from Overstrand Municipality to two government departments relating to illegal structures, on the court premises. The focus should be on the serious ‘’accommodation’’ problems at our court, not on the whistle blowers! As regional representative of the Law Society and as the appointed lawyer who attends the Case Flow Management meetings (between the SAPS, Correctional Services, Court, NPA, Judiciary and Social Services) I am acutely aware of the daily struggle by

good men and women who render their services to the public in woefully inadequate structures. The fact that various government departments are not rising to the challenges (after more than a decade of pleading to them) – or are funnelling budgeted money for our court to other purposes, is what we, concerned attorneys, are addressing. The report should not focus on what I believe, that it is “scandalously inadequate”, but the lack of response from the two departments concerned, and what steps were taken to get their responses. We have succeeded in getting a monthly Regional Civil Court presence here. We have succeeded in getting a Small Claims Court for Hermanus. (We used to fall under Caledon). We will, with all citizens and media support, get a new court!

Nuus News

Holidaymakers were expecting the worst during the festive season when a force of officers from the Overstrand Traffic Department, Sea Fisheries and CapeNature pulled them off the road just before entering Kleinmond. But after a routine check they were pleasantly surprised when friendly staff members of the Hangklip-Kleinmond Tourism Bureau handed them a welcome gift pack and invited them to take part in a social media photo campaign. It took some persuasion to get some of the visitors out of their cars to come and pose next to local icon, Pikkie the Penguin, for a photo taken with their own cellphone or camera. - SSMA / FANIE KRIGE

ART EXHIBIT: An enthusiastic crowd of visitors and locals were treated to the inspirational works of mixed me dia artists at the opening of the Sea, Sand & Soulscapes Exhibition, featur ing artworks by Lize van der Walt; the Mandala’s created by Lize Beek man (singer/songwriter and artist); the distinct paintings of Cronje Lem mer (fashion designer and artist), and the eye catching collection of Sozo jewellery designed by Onrus resident Ronet van Niekerk. NATURE MATTERS: Abalone, or per lemoen, are molluscs, as are clams, scallops, sea slugs, octopuses and squid. Molluscs have a soft body surrounded by a mantle, a head and a large muscular foot. The spiral structure, so common in snail shells, is flattened in the abalone shell. It is shaped like an ear, with a row of breathing pores down one side. Shells are prized because of their in ner, iridescent layer, called mother of pearl. Abalone are a delicacy in the far east and high prices are paid for them, leading to successful abalone farming, as well as illegal harvesting of abalone.

IMPORTANT NOTICE PROPOSED OFFICIAL PUBLIC LAUNCH SITES FOR THE WESTERN CAPE The Western Cape Government Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning has embarked on a process of listing Public Launch Sites in the Western Cape in terms of section 2(1) of the Public Launch Site Regulations, promulgated on 27 June 2014. The intention of the regulations is to manage public launch sites in the Coastal Zone as indicated in section 83(1)(d)(i) and (o) of the National Environmental Management: Integrated Coastal Management Act (Act No. 24 of 2008), as amended. The listing process will designate official public launch sites within the Western Cape, and identify who the respective management bodies are. In terms of the regulations, members of the public may only launch a vessel from an official site. The regulations exclude privately used launch sites. A vessel excludes non-motorised waterborne craft which do not require a vehicle or any other equipment to launch into the water. The proposed sites identified by the Western Cape Government, in consultation with the municipalities, can be seen in the table below. The Western Cape Government therefore encourages interested and affected parties to participate in the process by either attending the scheduled public engagements and/ or submit written comment to the following email address: coastal.enquiries@westerncape.gov.za; or alternatively, you could send your comments to our offices at the following address: Private Bag X9086, Cape Town, 8000. Please note that the schedule indicating dates, venues and times of the public engagements will be published in the Provincial Gazette on 12 December 2014.

The race ended with a colourthrowing festival.

PHOTOS: JANHENDRIK COETZER/CILENE BEKKER

Thousands join Color Run Despite some wet weather, over three thousand locals and visitors had the time of their lives at The Color Run on Saturday 27 December when the streets of Hermanus were transformed into a myriad of colour and happiness. Leon Swanepoel, local resident of Hermanus and licence holder of The Color Run Africa Series, was thrilled with the turnout at the event. “Holidaymakers and their families celebrated in true festive season spirit, reflecting the values intrinsic to The Color Run brand: health, happiness, unity and individuality.” In each colour zone, Color Runners were showered by volunteers with clouds of brightly coloured powder. The race ended with a colour-throwing festival, where participants and their families were entertained by the Heart FM 104.9 DJs. The Color Run will continue to roll out the national series in 2015 to more towns such as Stellenbosch, Nelspruit and Bloemfontein.

Even these two Gold en Retrievers didn’t mind being show ered in rainbows of colour.

Most contestants joined in the fun of making a ‘spectacle’ of themselves.

Taking time out for a selfie.

Passing through the red zone on the field opposite Huis Lettie Theron.

Over 3 000 people waiting in anticipation for the gates to open at the start of race.

Even the mayor, Nicolette Botha Guthrie, wasn’t spared as she too got covered in colour. With her is JanHendrik Coetzer from the Hermanus Times.

Benevolent Golf Day takes on a new approach The new and revitalised Hermanus Golf Club (HGC) Benevolent Day will be introduced on 6 March. Hermanus Senior Centre has come on board to be part of this extraordinary fundraiser. Until now, the centre had its own golf day, filled with fun and imaginative activities for the full field of keen golfers. The Hermanus Senior Centre will now join Sofca, Huis Lettie Theron and the Hermanus Hospital for one big fundraising golf day. The first gathering of the merged organising team was held at the end of last month and they have mapped out an entirely different kind of feel for the golf day in March. Formal proceedings will be replaced with an energy-induced day with various kinds of

An “old fashioned” tombola table, an adventurous chipping competition and a mouthgaping event on the driving range has the potential to cause players to book a tee-off time sooner rather than later. As in previous years, a morning and afternoon field will be played, but this year both fields are a four ball alliance format. The competition fee in the morning is R250 per player, and R2 000 per four ball for corporate play in the afternoon. The participants will be treated with an array of food and drink. HOT SUMMER OF TOUCH: ONRUS THE THIRD LEG

Touchies packed with action The third leg of the All Gold Hot Summer of Touch was played at Onrus Beach on Sunday 21 December while holiday makers were treated to a day packed with action and fun. Because of the limited space at Onrus, two fields meant a very compact straight knockout draw. This, however, did not deter the players and 43 teams that have entered the competition. The junior section was won by Beach Barbarians who narrowly beat Stellie Drifters in the final by two tries to nil. The Samurai Warriors overcame Team Impact by three tries to nil in the open section. Whilst the final of the pro series went down to a sudden-death dropoff with Living Legends edging out Vigo Warriors with a final score of one to nil.

Youngsters rule squash tourney In a thrilling 13th Harbour Rock Summers day squash tournament on Saturday 27 December, the youngsters showed the veterans how things should be done. In the men’s final, Capetonian Jonathan Just (23) beat Justin Wesson (17) from Ceres. On his way to the final, Justin beat local champs Wayne Cooke and Heindri Visser, and Jonathan, who represented WP last year, comfortably beat Overberg champ Stan Voges from Bredasdorp. In the men’s plate, Somerset West youngster Chris Lambrou (15) beat Wilko Aschenbom (33) from Windhoek, Namibia. It was up to the local women to hold the Hermanus flag high. Elize Mostert nar-

rowly lost to William Somerville from Johannesburg in the shield final. Hermanus juniors Marcelle Lötter and Cyndie Wentzel ended up first and second in the junior section. The Hermanus club members and local businesses again pulled out all stops to make this annual tournament a memorable one for visiting sportsmen, women and families. At the end of a thrilling day, the players were treated with prizes and lucky draws from generous local sponsors: Harbour Rock, Gateway Spar , Hermanus Pharmacies, and Land and See Sport, Gabrielskloof Cellar, Penny Pinchers and Technifibre. – MALCOLM GORDON
