HEMELENAARDE VALLEY FARM ATTACK
Two of four suspects still at large JANINE VAN DER RIET “We as a farming community were aggrieved to hear about the farm attack last week,” said Danie van Zyl, chairperson of the Rural Safety Forum, on Tuesday. An elderly couple was tied up and robbed on their farm in the Hemelen-Aarde Valley on Wednesday 30 April at around 21:00. Their farm is near Haygrove Heaven. According to Colonel Tembinkosi Kinana, provincial commander of SAPS media communications, the 77-year-old man and his wife were watching TV in their house on the farm when four men entered by smashing a glass door. The men threatened the couple with a gun and knives and tied them up. After they ransacked the house, the four suspects fled the scene in the couple’s VW Polo, with cellphones, an undisclosed amount of cash and the elderly couple’s bank and pension cards. The couple managed to phone for help after the suspects left and the police were alerted. The suspects drove across a field to the Haygrove Road and then onto the R320. Just before La Vierge the suspects lost control of the vehicle and it rolled. Two of the men sustained serious injuries while the other two fled on foot up the mountain behind La Vierge. The two injured suspects, aged 23
and 30, were arrested and taken to hospital for medical treatment. The vehicle and one cellphone were recovered by the Hermanus Police. The other two suspects are armed and are still at large. Apart from being traumatised, the couple was fortunately not injured, Kinana confirmed. Van Zyl, who is also the vicechairman of Babilonstoring Agricultural Association, says this attack on the elderly couple is the first serious attack in seven years in the area. He says the valley has mostly been plagued by solar panel and copper theft, and house burglaries in recent years. Van Zyl says the focus of the Rural Safety Forum and Babilonstoring Agri Association is to try and be pro-active. “We encourage our members to be alert, report out of the ordinary activities, remove bushes next to roads for better visibility and to keep spotlights on at night at premises. Warrant officer Johan Matthee from the Hermanus Police, had contacted Van Zyl on the night of the incident to inform him of the house robbery. “I then SMSed several of the nearby neighbours to be on the alert and I sent emails to everyone in the valley who is on our list, but it is not sufficient. “Our biggest challenge is deficient communication. Cellphones
and emails are lame in such a situation. In the forum we’ve been trying to get a two-way radio system, including a repeater – which gives better reception – up and running for quite a while.” The forum held a meeting recently to discuss the implementation of a two-way radio system, three surveillance cameras at all three entrances into the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley and other safety concerns. At that meeting it was decided to call together a large Safety Forum meeting, which will take place on 13 May at 18:30 at Newton Johnson Vineyards. “The purpose is to get more people involved and explain what we want to accomplish,” says Van Zyl. “There’s an apathy in the valley amongst the inhabitants regarding safety and security and we urgently need involvement from all inhabitants – young and old, employers and employees, to tackle this issue. We need to prevent anyone else being tied up or assaulted.” A Facebook group was established this week by AfriForum safety manager, Chris Nieuwoudt, and a resident in the Hemel-enAarde Valley, Gawie de Kock. On this page information will be posted of meetings to be held, rural sector emails with information and other information to keep residents posted on happenings in and around the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. Go to SCBH Rural Hermanus on Facebook and join the page.

“Thank you, God. My child could have been dead, but he is safe!” Magda Pieters of Fisherhaven said this after her son, Louis’ recent brush with death at the hands of Hawston locals. Louis was driving on the R43 past Hawston on his way to Stanford on Friday evening when people tried to stone his vehicle and fired shots at him. According to Colonel Tembinkosi Kinana, provincial spokesperson of SAPS, the incident took place after an abalone bust in Hawston. While police members were still busy loading the confiscated abalone, community members stoned the SAPS members and tried to block the R43 road and also burnt tyres. “At about 23:35, police in Hermanus seized a significant amount of abalone. This followed an intelligence-driven operation in Hawston which led to the confiscations. With a search warrant they swooped down on the house situated in Chester Road where they found a 26-year-old woman inside the house with 68 bags of frozen abalone. After the abalone was defrosted it was counted to 6 941.” Pieters said while Louis was driving past Hawston from Fisherhaven, community members tried to form a circle around his car. “He realised he was in trouble after he also heard shots fired and decided to drive away as fast as he could.” He managed to get away unharmed, but the car’s back window was shattered. After a few hours, the “riot” in Hawston was under control and the road was safe for motorists. The 26-year-old woman was arrested and appeared in the Hermanus Magistrate Court this week on charges relating to possession of abalone. A docket of public violence was also opened for further investigation.

Firefighters Day celebrated with gusto ELBÉ VAN HEERDEN The motorcade of fire engines and rescue vehicles heading towards the CBD on Saturday was part of the International Firefighters Day, which is held on or close to the 4th of May, the day of Saint Florian, the patron Saint of Firefighters. The motorcade, representing municipalities in the Western Cape, started at the Zwelihle community hall and proceeded to the Old Harbour. In her address the Overstrand Mayor, Nicolette Botha-Guthrie, mentioned that fire fighting rates as the second most dangerous profession in the world. “These risks and sacrifices are accepted by these members as a norm of the profession, and today we celebrate the dedication, heroism and importance of firefighters. These brave men and women are grateful for each time they are able to save a life, prevent injury or a disaster. They also cherish the blessings of their guardian angels that enable them to return home safely after each shift or operation.” After the formalities, fire and rescue services demonstrated a number of their skills, while ten teams of four firefighters from around the Western Cape participated in a
team challenge to show their physical strengths and practical skills. Tasks included striking a tyre with a sledgehammer, rolling up a fire hose, putting up a ladder and climbing on top of a container and down again, and pulling a charged fire hose and striking a cone. The challenge was won by the Eden District Municipality, with Breede Valley and the City of Cape Town in second and third place. Overstrand voters make their mark KERRY VAN RENSBURG Election fever was evident in the Overstrand on Wednesday 7 May as voters made their way to one of the 29 polling stations in the municipal area to cast their votes in South Africa’s 5th free and democratic national and provincial elections. With 49 660 registered voters in the Overstrand municipal area and voting stations stretching from Gansbaai to Betty’s Bay, the local IEC office and the 354 IEC staff manning the voting stations, had their work cut out for them. Overstrand Mayor Nicolette BothaGuthrie says she cast her vote at the Amana Conference Centre in Vermont at 07:00. While there she noticed that a couple who were not registered to vote at this specific voting station, were busy filling in forms so that they could do so, when a member of the IEC told them they had to go to the voting station they were registered at in order to vote. Botha-Guthrie says she brought the matter to the attention of the voting station’s presiding officer, and said the couple had a right to vote at any polling station provided they filled out the necessary document. The presiding officer took immediate action and rectified the situation. Two voters who also had to fill out documents because they were not registered to vote at the specific voting stations they went to, namely the De Wet Hall in Onrus and Hawston Secondary School, told the Hermanus Times that the process was quick and simple with no complications.
Botha-Guthrie, accompanied by Mike Walters, visited every voting station in the Overstrand during the course of the day. Things were running smoothly at the six voting stations which the Hermanus Times visited early Wednesday morning. By 12:00 the total number of votes that had been cast in the Overstrand stood at 20 185, which was 40,65% of the total number of registered voters in the municipality. The figures for each polling station were reported by the presiding officers to Anton
Coetsee, who was running the DA office in the Overstrand, and he said the figures “were reliable”. When voting stations closed at 21:00, the votes were counted at each election venue under the scrutiny of independent observers and party agents and the verified outcome for each venue publicly displayed. The ballot boxes were then sealed and transported to the IEC office where an independent auditor verified the results before sending them to the provincial and national IEC offices.

Eastwood Loftus Nel with his beloved dogs. He died on Friday, 2 May.
PHOTO: FACEBOOK
Legendary figure dies JANINE VAN DER RIET Eastwood Loftus Nel was well known as the man with the cute threesome of dachshunds in a box on the back of his motorbike. Nel suddenly passed away on Friday 2 May after he suffered a massive heart attack. His love for his animals was heart warming and he was a legendary figure in Hermanus, known to many, as is evident from the multitude of messages on his Facebook page after he passed away. The only time Castrol, Dot and Mossie were not in their “dog box” on the yellow BMW 650 GS motorbike, was when he delivered pizzas for a restaurant in the CBD. Any other time, the dogs would join him on his journeys between his home in Onrus and town. Their leashes acted as safety belts when they hit the road. Nel was born on 11 September, 1954 in Worcester. He grew up in the area and later married Tertia Chambers in 1974, after they had been school sweethearts since grade 8. The couple had four children – Daniel, Thomas and twins Henk and Frans. After Nel and Tertia divorced, Nel moved to Hermanus in 2002. His biggest love besides his dogs and motorbikes was music – anything from Santana to Eric Clapton. His son Thomas says there was always music playing in their house. Friends and family are all worried about the future of his three beloved dogs. Unfortunately, Mossie was put down on Monday, as his close friend explained this was Nel’s wish, that Mossie had to go with him when the time came. Castrol and Dot are currently in foster care and are hoping to be adopted by a family permanently. According to a friend of Nel, the dogs are not doing well as they are longing for their owner. “A family with people at home most of the day will be a good forever home for these two.” Ilze Smith from the Hermanus Animal Welfare Society can be contacted on 082 856 8391. A celebration of Nel’s life will be held at 10:30 on Saturday, 10 May at the Hermanus Bikers Club at 7C Roman Close. Call Andrew on 079 884 0376 for more information. A get together in memory of Eastwood will also take place at 10:30 on 17 May, at 17 Duiker Street in Vermont.

Be part of the Reforest Fest at Platbos forest New trees will be planted in the ancient Platbos Forest, between Gansbaai and Stanford, during Greenpop’s fourth annual Reforest Fest, which will be held over two weekends in May (10/11 and 17/18 May). Greenpop’s reforestation efforts over the previous three years have led to the planting of over 8 000 trees native to Platbos, which is South Africa’s southernmost indigenous forest. This year Greenpop aims to plant a further 8 000 trees. Greenpop is a social enterprise that believes greening and sustainable living can be fun, popular and accessible for all. Like many natural forests around the world, parts of Platbos have been cleared over the past decades for cultivation. Today, many of these cleared areas
are being taken over by dense invasive alien vegetation, which pose a serious fire risk to the forest. In response to this issue, Melissa and Francois Krige of Platbos have launched the Trees for Tomorrow reforestation programme. Through this, endemic seeds are harvested from the forest, reared in the Platbos Forest Tree Nursery and then replanted to expand the forest. It’s important to plant these endemic trees because they are adapted to drought and serve as a food source for the bird and animal species relying on the Platbos ecosystem. Due to the popularity of the Reforest Fest, it is happening twice. A family fest from 9 to 11 May is suitable for families of all ages and will feature varied educational activities for kids, teens and adults. Some of these activities include hula hooping, forest walks, yoga and tree meditation, interactive musical sessions
and instrument making, and arts and crafts. The second weekend is a friends fest from 16 to 18 May. It will have more of an upbeat dancing festival /forest party atmosphere on the Saturday evening. (Assess the suitability of this in regard to the age of children.) The Sunday after will offer more of a restful vibe, with varied activities, again including forest walks, yoga and meditation. Tickets for the event are R590 (R390 for children under 12), which includes camping, all meals, great music, tools, fun activities and trees for the reforestation effort. For bookings of six or more, the cheapest ticket will be free. Book tickets at www.webtickets.co.za. Companies and individuals who would like to sponsor trees for the festival can email marleen@greenpop.org

Dying to see a doctor too EDITORIAL COMMENT This week we are Proudly Overstrand With the fifth national elections taking place this week, we celebrated being Proudly SA, but at least two recent happenings also gives us reason to be Proudly Overstrand. The past week saw local residents selflessly save a five year old child who could have drowned had they not reacted quickly. They did everything they could to save someone else’s daughter. On the same day, municipalities from around the Western Cape gathered in the Overstrand to celebrate the selfless work done by our firefighters, even when resources and staff are at times below the usual requirements. All these men and women and the hundreds of locals who came out to support them on Firefighters Day make us Proudly Overstrand. Each of us, in one way or another, can help create a better and brighter future for all.
My vraag: Wat as daar iets ernstig verkeerd gegaan het?

So-

Desperately seeking affordable accommodation

Be kind to receptionists I am an educated woman with a degree who works as a receptionist in town. It amazes me how some people treat someone who works as a receptionist. Women especially will address you as poplap (which is condescending); they shout at you over the phone if they can’t have their way, they tell you how to do your job and then, my personal favourite, “I will take my business elsewhere!” I am shaking in my boots, lady. Not! Usually it is the receptionist who is to blame. The fact that many don’t bother to make appointments, or stick to them, does not play a role. The fact that the receptionist cannot wave a magic wand to make their dreams come true seems to be a problem. Now, I would like to say to all of you who take your pent-up anger, bad manners etc. out on the receptionist – luckily for you most of us have a very good upbringing and education, otherwise we would put you in your place. Maybe this is where the problem lies – it is more difficult to be kind, than to be mean.

It is with a heavy heart that I write this letter today. Desperately seeking decent accommodation in Hermanus without paying an arm and a leg is becoming impossible. The very few options there are on line and in the paper are either too small or way too expensive for decent couples that earn a very basic salary. What are we to do? Browsing on line you will find pages full of holiday accommodation for tourists and visitors, catering for them maybe once or twice a year? What about the permanent residents of Hermanus? The people who live here all year round, work here and have to make a living, why not take them into consideration? In the 7 years that I have been a permanent resident here I have viewed lots of properties and let me tell you, some of those apartments were just plain shocking, with a hefty rental fee. Yes, Hermanus is expanding but we are still a close-knit community that is supposed to look
out for each other, right? Or am I just being naive? If I was ever lucky enough to be in that position of being able to rent out a property of my own to tenants, I would do it at a very reasonable price. Why? Because I care about people and giving them decent, affordable accommodation would make me happy. I am writing this letter to try and reach out to home/apartment owners who have vacant properties. I am sure, like myself and my husband, there are many couples out there who are also desperately seeking good affordable accommodation. Please open your hearts and homes to us – the members of this community trying to make a living here but unfortunately not financially able like many residents here. Thank you.

So, mnr. of mev.

As jy in Afrikaans wil fees, wikkel oor die berg Woordfees toe. Kry koers Kalfiefees toe.

Firefighters honoured Overstrand Fire and Rescue hosted the regional International Firefighters Day celebrations on 3 May. This is a time when the world’s community can recognise and honour the sacrifices that firefighters make to ensure that their communities and environment are as safe as possible. It is also a day when current and past firefighters can be thanked for their contributions. Various other emergency services were also represented including Fire and Rescue, Metro Emergency, private ambulance services, Working on Fire, NSRI and SAAF. One of the participating regional fire chiefs described the event as “a wow moment”, and it truly was. From start to finish the parade, demonstrations and team challenges had the crowd on their feet. The crowd was invited to observe the capabilities of our emergency services with great professionalism and precision. All of this was awarded by the delivery and handing over of the newest addition to the Overstrand Fire and Rescue squad, a brand new special built fire engine. I am convinced that I speak on behalf of all those present on Saturday when I congratulate the Overstrand (especially the fire and rescue department) on a very successful event. To all emergency services of the Overstrand, South Africa and all over the world… we salute you.

Sies vir jou!– KG ) The Overstrand is fortunate to have many in spired individuals who have initiated wonderful events that have huge benefits for the whole region. Specifically the whole team behind the MTB trails and land owners allowing the trails need to be given huge accolades for what they have achieved in recent years for promoting our area. ) Well done Tamzyn of Just Pure. A special menu that conforms to the Banting diet, as Prof. Tim Noakes’ new healthy approach to eating is known. The dishes created are imaginative with not a glim mer of guilt. Thank you. – DORIS PIENAAR ) Graag wil ek my waardering uitspreek teenoor ’n werknemer in die winkel by die Engen vulstasie in Sandbaai vir haar eerlikheid.

Rode Consult’s appeal against the Sandbaai mall proposal also highlights its attractions With reference to the article The Hermanus Business Chamber resolves to fight for CBD in the HT 17/04/2014: I have studied the appeal document to Anton Bredell as drawn up by Rode Consult, and would like to comment on their second ground for appeal: ) “The proposed mall is at an intercept position for the vast majority of local and regional traffic.” This must mean it is convenient to the majority of Greater Hermanus residents. ) “The location of the mall is in the centre of retail purchasing power.” It can therefore not be in a better place. ) “The mall will offer free parking.” How about that for meeting one of the major needs of the consumer? The biggest problem in the CBD is free parking – and parking, period. ) “A climate-controlled one-stop shopping facility.” Hallelujah, actually considering the needs and comfort of the consumer. ) “Leading retailers will close their CBD stores at the first opportunity.” To me it sounds as if the HBC does not consider the CBD to be the best location for retailers. What will probably happen is that new retailers not represented in Hermanus CBD will take up all the available anchor space in the mall and the town retailers will have to stay put.
) “The national supermarket and clothing anchor tenants will depart the CBD for the mall.” Of course they will if they can – marketing-orientated retailers tend to take their business to the consumer, and not inconvenience them by forcing them to come to them. Conclusion These are all strong marketing arguments for a mall in Sandbaai. – You can’t be all things to all people; you need to segregate your market. – You need to identify your market clearly, and be able to communicate with it. – You need to identify your target customers’ needs and wants, and meet these fully at a price they can pay. – You need to fish where the fish are. – Things will change and you need to change accordingly. If you try dictate to your consumer about your products you will fail. Today one needs to be a consumer-orientated marketer to be successful and survive. There is no need for the CBD to be threatened by a suburban shopping mall if they clearly identify their target market and the target market’s needs. They need to design their product to meet these needs, and fully service their target market.
PROF DA DICKENS SANDBAAI
NATURE MATTERS DID YOU KNOW: There are four different types of plants that make up fynbos: the various protea species, ericas or heaths, bulbous plants and, most definitively, the restios or Cape reeds. If there are no restios to be seen, it’s not fynbos. For example, there are no natural restios in the Hermanus cliff path vegetation and it’s thus classified as coastal scrub, rather than fynbos. The restios are often mistakenly called grasses, but they differ from grasses in that they have no leaves and the stems are solid, not hollow. Male and female flowers are borne on separate plants. Fernkloof Nature Reserve has about 50 different species of restios. Thamnochortus pellucidus or “dwergriet” (female de picted) grows on the lower border of Fernkloof. It is classified as vulnerable and is threatened by urban expansion and habitat destruction.....PHOTO: ANINA LEE

While we wait for the results of the election, we can all take out our raincoats as we look forward to a wet weekend. The rain will start shortly after 17:00 this afternoon (Thursday) and continue until Saturday evening. More than 17 mm is expected and by Monday it will clear but very cold.
Ek hoor Langfaan giggel.

Jazz and Tango at FynArts 6 – 16 June 2014: The last day for Hermanus FynArts early-bird bookings is Sunday 11 May. Memories and Songs This jazz concert with internationally acclaimed jazz musician Selaelo Selota (guitar), Gally Ngoveni (bass) and Sipho Malinga (drums), is one of the exciting musical highlights of Hermanus FynArts. The concert will be staged in Zwelihle (Lukhanyo Primary School Hall) on Saturday 7 June at 14:00. Selota grew up in a rural village near Polokwane. In 1985 he found work in the gold mines. Life among migrant mine workers introduced him to the traditional songs and dances of many other Southern African tribal groups. After three years, he left the mines and started working at the Market Theatre as an usher and later as a cleaner at a jazz club, which exposed him to professional musicians. He bought his first gui-
tar and began studying music theory through FUBA (Federated Union of Black Artists Academy). He graduatedin 1997 from UCT with a Jazz degree, majoring in Jazz Composition and Arrangement. 2014 Standard Bank Young Artist for Jazz: Kyle Shepherd Trio with Kyle (piano); Shane Cooper (double bass) and Jonno Sweetman (drums) This magnificent musical dialogue has enthralled audiences across South Africa, Switzerland and China. They will perform at the Overstrand Auditorium on Thursday 12 June at 19:20. Band leader, 26-year old Shepherd, is highly regarded as one of South Africa’s leading progressive Jazz pianists and composers of his generation. Shane Cooper was the 2013 Standard Bank Young Artist for Jazz. As a composer Shane has written music for a number of awardwinning documentaries and films

NUWE SANDERO: 900CC TURBOENJIN
Taai klein kragbron verras
JOHAN MOUTON

It impressed with its 2+2 seating and variable luggage compartment, and set the standard for its technology: potent downsized turbo engines, quattro allwheel drive for the high-end models and six-speed S tronic, which debuted in the model series in 2003. The second generation, which followed in 2006/2007, marked the first time Audi that reversed the weight spiral. The new Yaris embraces Toyota’s contempo rary design language with a fullwidth up per grille that extends into new triangular headlamps. PHOTO: QUICKPIC
Toyota’s newlook Yaris QUICKPIC Toyota’s upgraded Yaris will embark on a new era when it is released onto the South African market during the second half of this year. The images released today reveal a model which delivers greater emotional appeal by sporting Toyota’s signature front-end design, imbuing the newcomer with a more contemporary “family look” evident in cars like the Auris, Corolla and the all-new Aygo (not due in SA before 2015). The new Yaris embraces Toyota’s contemporary design language with a fullwidth upper grille that extends into new triangular headlamps. It also incorporates a deeper front bumper with a large trapezoidal lower intake, which is a key element of Toyota’s design theme that is being introduced progressively across the range. The upgrade also brings revised rear styling including new tail lamps as well as a raft of under-the-skin and interior mods – details will be released closer to the launch. The range of powertrains is unchanged, with a 1.0 and 1.33 F petrol engine as well as Toyota’s flagship full hybrid system on offer.

Hyundai unveils its smaller ix25 concept SUV
QUICKPIC
Hyundai has unveiled an ix25 concept model at the 2014 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition as an appetiser for the launch of such a sophisticated small-sized SUV – another strategic pillar for Hyundai Motor in the world’s largest auto market – exclusively in China later this year. The ix25 concept hints at a premium look, based on Hyundai Motor’s evolved Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 design philosophy. Harmony between a bold front, voluminous side, sporty rear and other details complete the premium small-sized SUV’s design. Equipped with a Nu 2.0 engine, the ix25 concept features an overall length of 4 270 mm, overall width of 1 780 mm and overall height of 1 630 mm, while its wheelbase reaches 2 590 mm. “Hyundai Motor has grown into a leading
automaker in China through continuous innovation and we are now poised for a new challenge to become the most loved brand by Chinese customers,” said Hyundai Motor president, Sung Kee Choi. “We will now prepare for another successful decade in China through the launch of high-quality models such as the ix25 SUV, which is strategicallydeveloped for China, and the all-new Genesis.” The ix25 will mainly target the young generation who seek style and practicality at the same time, and Hyundai Motor is planning various marketing activities to attract them. With its launch in the second half of this year, Hyundai Motor expects to complete its competitive SUV line-up in China, from ix25, ix35, Santa Fe to Grand Santa Fe, aiming to secure the leading position in the country’s rapidly growing SUV market. The “i” in ix25 represents the “inspiring, intelligent and innovative” characteristics of the young generation.

Eco road show to reach 30 schools Whale Coast Conservation (WCC) is on the road again. Over the next two weeks learners from all 30 schools on WCC’s Eco-Schools programme will visit the Sustainable Future Road Show and have fun while learning. The 10 exhibits that form part of the show demonstrate how one can live sustainably and save money as well. The show will go to Gansbaai, Stanford, Hermanus, Zwelihle, Hawston and Kleinmond. Funding for the road show comes from the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund. During the course of each show day groups of 80 learners from different schools will arrive every hour. Through interesting, interactive exhibits, they will learn they can help to protect the valuable services we get from natural ecosystems at no cost to themselves.
Demonstrations include: how to generate electricity by wave, wind and solar energy instead of using coal; how one can save electricity – and money; how one can save money on waste removal by recycling and reusing scarce materials; how important fresh, clean water is to our survival and how to use that water sparingly. Parents and the public are invited to come along from 15:00 to 16:00 on each show day to see what the children are learning. There will be valuable tips and interesting facts to explore. Entrance is free. Show dates: Tuesday 13 May – Gansbaai Primary; Wednesday 14 May – Zwelihle Primary; Friday 16 May – Hermanus High; Tuesday 20 May – Stanford Community Hall; Friday 23 May – Hawston Community Hall; Tuesday 27 May – Kleinmond Community Hall.

The Hermanus Hacking Group (HHG) held their fifth annual general meeting on 1 April and Charlyn Vosloo presented her annual chairperson’s report. The objectives of the HHG include: • The eradication of Port Jacksons and other invasive alien plants within the boundaries of Hermanus. • Promotion and conservation of the natural heritage of Cape fynbos in the Overstrand municipal area. • Creating awareness among residents of the extent of invasive alien plant infestation endangering our natural heritage, and working towards the building of attitudes of the public and the private sector to shoulder the responsibility of eradicating invasive alien plants in Hermanus. • Employment of workers to assist voluntary members of HHG with the eradication of alien plants, thereby creating temporary job opportunities for unemployed people and the development of unskilled workers. • Employment of an administrative officer for secretarial and other administrative duties and a manager to oversee the workers during additional hacking sessions. • Acquisition of tools and chemicals as necessary for eradication of invasive alien plants. • Formulation and attainment of work standards. • Removal of plant material which has been exposed to poisoning in order to prevent secondary poisoning of the veld. • Improving paths along areas where hacking had been done. • Helping with the prevention of erosion in the mountain. • Raising funds as a non-profit organisation to attain these objectives. Vosloo says: “Looking back on more than five years of hacking, we realise this has been, and still is, an arduous task. Our work has mainly been limited to the boundaries of the Fernkloof Nature Reserve. We have been approached by an owner at Lagoon Edge to help with the eradication of invasive aliens, mainly Port Jacksons, but also pines and myrtle. On Thursday 27 March a pilot removal for four hours was done by five of our workers to enable

the management to assess the feasibility of the project and the extent of funds required. HHG had been awarded the work to eradicate all invasive aliens which the manager of the housing development, Deon Snyman, identifies.” Vosloo says another request has come from Edelweiss du Plessis, club captain of Hermanus Golf Club. The HHG was asked to do an inspection of their two wetlands areas with a view to giving a quote. However, minimal infestation was found and follow-up inspection will occur later on in the year. 1.1.1 Northcliff Vosloo says maintenance work ceased in the Northcliff mountain region for most of 2013/2014 but recommenced on 14 March 2014. The work is being expanded for three hours onTuesdaysandWednesdays, withamanager, André van den Berg, overseeing a group of approximately six workers. “When funds improve and more volunteers become involved, specifically on these days, a larger team of workers can be considered. The workers are appointed for the day’s work on a first come first served basis.” At Hoy’s Koppie and adjacent areas, manageable Port Jacksons were taken out over a period of four weeks. The large Rooikrans, Virgillia divaricat, and blue gums were too advanced in size and required expert removal by chemical means. This was conducted by the municipality during the latter part of 2013. “We have supporters in the community congratulating us on the diversity of fynbos, especially along Mountain View Drive, which was very badly infested seven years ago, and diversity limited,” says Vosloo in her report. She says they have 40 workers on their register and about 20 pitch up each week. They work alongside the volunteers eradicating the alien plants using tools especially designed for the task. Vosloo thanked Woolworths and Fruit and Veg for the food they provided for the HHG workers during the 2013/2014 financial year, as well as the many supporters who keep the initiative going. To contribute to the HHG, call Charlyn Vosloo on 082 558 8731. Banking details: Hermanus Hacking Group; Nedbank; Bank code: 198765; Account number: 1345057709.

Atlantic B (17) vs Rangers
B (11) Die B-span is steeds onoorwonne. Atlantic A (12) vs Rangers A (14) Die A-span se wedstryd was hard en vinnig.
Hermanus Golf Club roundup This week we saw a little preview of winter as on Tuesday our ladies were rained out and blown away, so, no results. The sun, however, shone for the men on Wednesday, who played for the Rotary Shield. This trophy was first presented to the golf club in 1949 by the Rotary Club of Hermanus. Our popular winners of the betterball medal were Tony Behagg and Peter Sulley with a tremendous nett 58. They were, however, closely followed on nett 59 by Peter Bennett and Duncan Fletcher. (I see coaching the Indi-
joint second place. Others at the lower end of the results could not Cope with the conditions and The Yorkshire Ripper spoiled his paper. The results were: 35 Morgan O’Kennedy (guest); 34 Brian Taylor (guest), Michel Maury, Hugh Frangs; 33 Jon Forsyth, Dave Smith; 31 Peter Thomas; 30 Gordon Wilson; 28 André Franken, Peter Theron, Sam Seal; 26 John Tunstall, Mannes van Zyl; 25 John Cheesbrough; 24 Mike Graham; 23 Vic van der Westhuizen; 21 Keith Gillott.

an cricket side did not dull Duncan’s golfing skills either!) Conditions were near perfect so we had ten 2-clubs and ball pool paid to 62. Saturday saw a near full field of 119 players. The betterball bogey plus victors were Tony Squires and Frans Prins on a super +14, and just behind them on +13 were Brian Taylor and a returning to form Gerrie du Plooy (what a Sterling performance!). There were five 2-clubs and ball pool paid to +9. Have a great week and see you all at the golf club.

DOGS go to the poles The DOGS took part in an individual stableford (log) on 6 May at Theewaterskloof. There was a relatively low turnout at TWK Municipality this week as a number of those registered were unable to make their marks due to illness. Some of the old established parties (A Naked Chef and I Felloff Pole) slipped down the ratings as Agang of newcomers took the top spots. Real Attackers beat Salim United On Sunday 4 May, in a strong drizzle, Real Attackers beat Salim United Football Club in a league match. The final score was 1-0. Real Attackers managed to score in the final moments of the match and the winning goal was scored by Abongile Mafevuka, a striker from Qhayiya Secondary School. Last year he was awarded for his achievements in scoring goals for the school. He is now replicating his good form for his new team, Real Attackers.
Although Salim United, which is a renowned Hermanus soccer club from Mount Pleasant, played a very aggressive and tough match in pouring rain, Abongile, known as Jijo by his fellow team members and currently in Grade 11, managed to clinch the match under pressure and bring victory to his team. Salim United had three attempts at goal but once again their attempt was obstructed by another Qhayiya Secondary School player, Kwanda Bokolo. He is in Grade 12. – Mogamat Kamedien
