“Hester skuld my nog bran muffins. By elke sportgeleentheid was sy verantwoordelik vir die spyseniering. “Ek kon so lekker met haar gesels. Altyd. Oor enigiets.

Attempted raped at stop and go JANINE VAN DER RIET A woman working at the stop and go system while the roadworks project is being completed on the R43 Hemel-enAarde Road between Hermanus and Caledon, was attacked and almost raped on Sunday morning at around 10:00. The woman was working alone at the stop and go station near the farm Spookfontein, when she saw a man standing in the little office stationed next to the stop and go area. According to lieutenant Fadila September, spokesperson for the Hermanus police, the man grabbed the woman and started to tear all her clothes off. “He was about to rape her, when a vehicle stopped and he ran away.” The woman was taken to the police station and also received trauma counselling. The suspect had a cream jacket and light coloured pants and a cap on.
A case of attempted rape has been opened at the Hermanus police station. No arrests have been made at this stage. Warrant Officer Edward Abels can be contacted on 028 313 7000.
The contractor on site, Kingstone Gore said on Wednesday they are aware of the incident. “We can only comment when all information like medical reports are available,” Gore said. Kingstone Gore After many attempts by the Hermanus Times to receive comment from Brink & Heath Civils, the company did not respond by the time of going to print.
A woman working at the stop and go system on the R320 near the farm Spookfontein was almost raped on Sunday morning.
Woman injured after falling off cliff near Marine Hotel JANINE VAN DER RIET A woman suffered serious injuries including multiple fractures and head trauma after falling more than 10 m off a cliff near The Marine Hotel on Monday afternoon. The place where she fell is almost exactly where a German tourist had slipped and fell from the cliff top in November 2011. Responding to an emergency call-out around lunchtime on Monday, Emergency Medical Rescue (EMR) and Metro Ambulance Services were on the scene quickly and found the woman at the bottom of the cliff, in severe pain. They stabilised her before carrying her up
the steep incline and transporting her to Hermanus Provincial Hospital. “She was very confused and wasn’t sure what happened to cause her to fall,” said a paramedic from EMR who assisted at the scene. “Her confused state could be due to a possible concussion.” Management at The Marine rushed to the scene immediately when they heard about the fall. They offered blankets to the ambulance personnel for the victim and also tried to keep members of the public away from the cliff while the woman was attended to. Hennie Niemand, manager of Hermanus
Public Protection (HPP) said HPP guards and supervisors also ran to the scene when they saw people gathering around the cliff, just seconds after the incident occurred, and offered their help. According to Jo-Anne Otto, spokesperson for the Western Cape Department of Health, the patient, who cannot be named due to patient confidentiality protocols, has been transferred from Hermanus Provincial Hospital to Worcester Hospital a few hours after the incident. “The patient is in a stable condition and is being evaluated for possible surgical procedure and further care,” Otto said on Tuesday.
Desperation drives families to seek shelter with the homeless KERRY VAN RENSBURG Families with children have been seeking accommodation at the temporary night shelter in Hermanus that was set up to provide the homeless with a place to sleep and a plate of food during the winter. Les Abbott, chairperson of the Night Shelter Association, says: “In the last four weeks I have had two couples and two families with children, who are not part of the regular group of bergies or homeless community, looking for shelter.” Abbott says: “There is a bigger problem

growing. Other sectors of society are in need of help. Why are families with two kids pitching up at the shelter?” He says this trend is possibly as a result of people losing their jobs, and with no income can no longer afford to pay their rent. The recession is biting people harder than we realise. Abbott says he has spoken to other people working closely with people in need, who say this is the tip of the iceberg when it comes to families who were once doing well, who can no longer make ends meet. The Hermanus Night Shelter committee has been in existence for more than
five years, and operates as a sub-committee of the Poverty Alleviation Forum The current night shelter for the homeless is in a converted garage near the Hermanus clinic, but land has been allocated opposite the Waste Transfer Station in Zwelihle so that a new and bigger shelter can be established. Abbott says the application for this land will be considered by council in August. He says the situation with the homeless is not his problem, it is the municipality’s problem. “But we, as the Night Shelter Association, have taken on this social problem.”

Die sekuriteit is baie streng by dié karavaanpark.

Remember last year November when this thin dog with droopy teats used to hang around Gateway Spar and everyone was so concerned about her and her unseen puppies? The Hermanus Animal Welfare Society (HAWS) took her in eventually when she had weaned her puppies, which HAWS never found. Later she was adopted by a loving family, but unfortunately they brought her back to HAWS months later. The family was very upset to let her go, but they were unable to keep her in their grounds as she loves to jump walls and go walk about. HAWS are asking for a clever person to perhaps come forward with a solution for dogs who manage to climb high walls and would be willing to take Letta, perhaps even a farm as she is now on the last chance list. Judy Miller from HAWS says they really want to give her a second chance. “She is a super friendly and social dog, it is just hard to keep her from climbing walls.” Call HAWS on 028 312 1281 if you can help.

Road linking Stanford and Hermanus to be widened ELBÉ VAN HEERDEN The R43 linking Stanford and Hermanus is due for an upgrade, but only in a few years’ time. According to the head of communications at the Department of Transport and Public Works, AlAmeen Kafaar, the project is scheduled for construction in 2019, depending on fund constraints. Last year announcements of the proposed project were advertised in the 29 May 2013 editions of Die Burger and Cape Times. A notification letter was distributed and registration of interested and affected parties (I&APs) was conducted. Information-sharing meetings were held in Stanford as well as Hermanus on 13 June 2013 where concerns could be raised. Some of the concerns raised included safe access roads and rightturn lanes; pedestrian, cyclist and animal safety; the privatisation of service roads as well as problems re-
garding fencing and storm water drainage. All these issues are addressed in the final BAR. The estimated budget for the project is around R180 million. According to the final BAR, the existing road has a surfaced width of 6.4 m. The proposal is to increase the surfaced width by 1 m and include 2 m of surfaced shoulders. The total surfaced width would be 11.4 m. The Klein River Bridge will be realigned and facilitate a pedestrian walkway, and will be wide enough to accommodate horse riders in the area. Vogelgat Bridge will also see some improvement. It is further proposed to create a traffic circle at the intersection of the R43 and Queen Victoria Street in Stanford. A cattle culvert will be constructed close by on Walshacres Farm. A commuter, who uses this stretch of road on a daily basis, was extremely concerned that the road might be closed for an extended period, but is happy that the road will

MOTOR CLUB GETTOGETHER: The Pleasant Cruise Crew, a local motorcar club, was established in February this year to promote togetherness in the community. There are currently 26 vehicles registered with the club. Meetings take place at the Mount Pleasant pool where there is enough parking for all. The club is in the process of connecting with other clubs in the Overberg, Grabouw, Caledon and Worcestor, to plan a community project to help make a difference where needed. Their next run will be a trip to Kleinmond on 27 July. For more information call Grant Plaatjies at 076 296 4007 or Whatsapp: 076 920 9633.

Gabriëlskloof embraces a new era of winemaking
Peter-Allan Finlayson has started as the new winemaker at Gabriëlskloof Wine Estate in Bot River.
The move comes as a result of Peter-Allan’s own brand, Crystallum (which focuses mostly on Hemeland-Aarde grapes), needing a more permanent winemaking home. He will be making his own wines as well as the Gabriëlskloof wines on the estate. He is excited about the new challenge, and looks forward to continuing the tradition of Finlayson family winemaking with his wife Nicolene and her father Bernhard Heyns, who is the owner of Gabriëlskloof. “This is really an incredible opportunity. I look forward to entering into a new, challenging winemaking chapter in my life. Bot River
has some of the best soils in the country and this area, while already having produced world-class wines, will only become more renowned,” he says. Bernhard is delighted to have his son-in-law as the new winemaker and sees it as an important evolutionary step in Gabriëlskloof’s progress. “Apart from the fact that it’s sometimes necessary to re-focus and rethink a business like Gabriëlskloof, it’s clear to us that Peter-Allan has the necessary flair and passion to take our wines to the next level.” Kobie Viljoen has been Gabriëlskloof’s winemaker since 2008. “I am proud to have been associated with Gabriëlskloof and the Heyns family and grateful for the successes we’ve achieved together in the past six years,” says Kobie.

In memoriam 1/02/1955 – 3/07/2014 Geskryf deur haar eggenoot Johan Nel My vrou was baie lief vir mense. Thank you for warm re ception of Ella’s Horses
EDITORIAL COMMENT
On behalf of myself and the actors I’d like to thank all, especially Angela Heslop (Hermanus History Society), for a generous reception and professionally executed event with the performance of our production Ella’s Horses on Friday night. It was a real pleasure to share our work with a very appreciative audience and I hope that Ella’s legacy struck some chords and awakened people to her heritage and the wonderful person she was. Thank you for the gifts too! Our gratitude also to Dane and John who assisted with the technical side of things. I look forward to engaging with you again in the future.

‘Scurrilous untruths’ deserves apology One cannot allow the scurrilous untruths penned anonymously in the SMS column under “A curious bystander” (Hermanus Times 3 July) regarding Mr Hendriksz and his involvement with the music entertainment during the past Whale Festival to pass unchallenged. To state that “... he (Mr Hendriksz) secured table reservations at R100 just to have a view of the tent and hear the music” is nothing short of libellous. For the record all monies collected for table reservations went towards the purchase of a whale disentanglement kit. This kit was handed over to the NSRI at a function held on the NSRI’s premises and covered by the Hermanus Times. It was a collective goodwill gesture by the organisers of the event, Distell, the Whale Festival committee and Village Square - of which Mr Hendriksz is part of. I will be pleasantly surprised if, now that “A curious bystander” is aware of the facts, whether he or she will again take the time to put pen to paper - this time in an apology to Mr Hendriksz.

Hermanus Hospital maternity ward is tops C2 = Caring, Competence; A = Accountability; I = Integrity; R2 = Responsiveness, Respect. These are the words that you read on the first banner you see when you are on your way down the lengthy hallway towards the maternity ward at the Hermanus Provincial Hospital. I was expecting our second child, a boy due on 19 June 2014, according to my latest sonar. When the 19th arrived, without our baby making an appearance, I decided to go and see the sisters at the maternity ward, seeking their professional opinion. They kindly seated me down and did all their observations. They then asked me what my earliest sonar dated, and according to that one our boy was due on 22 June. They then told me that one should rather
work according to the date of the earliest sonar and assured me that I can even go over that date by six days. If little one hadn’t made his appearance by then, the doctor on duty would have to decide whether the birth should be induced or for me to have a caesarean. The 22nd came and went: still no baby boy. I returned on the 23rd to see the sisters but their observations said there was still no sign of the little one making his appearance soon. I returned four times for observation, and every time the sisters showed me a caring attitude, without the slightest notion of irritation for this over-exited pregnant lady. On the 26th, at around midnight, my water broke and my husband and I were on our way to the hospital, this time knowing for sure something was busy happening and little Timothy John was duly born on 27 June at 05:50 the morning.
I would just like to thank the sisters at the maternity ward for the outstanding service they rendered to me through all the aches and pains of childbirth. I was truly treated like royalty every step of the way, from the time I arrived till the time I left. I would also like to thank the doctors for their professional advice and service when it came to some of the complications after the birth – they are truly first class! I would also like to compliment the kitchen staff for the superb meals I received at breakfast, lunch and supper (not to mention the soup and bread in between). One always has doubts about a provincial health facility, but I can truly say after my experience, that our Provincial Hospital (staff and infrastructure) are tops and that they live up to every aspect of their slogan. Bravo.

– AJ ) Wat gaan aan by nagskuiling? ) Hospice Shop would like to thank everyone for their donations. It is not always possible to thank each donor individually, but please know that Hos pice Shop really appreciates your support. ) Thank you Dr A Liebenberg for your kindness and gentle bedside manner! You are an asset to Hermanus, may you stay for a long, long time! – A PATIENT’S DAUGHTER ) Please don’t make the mistake of going to the Onrus post office within 10 minutes of closing time on a Saturday. You are likely to get a tongue lash ing from the person behind the counter who wants to close at 12:00 sharp. – B ) Sjoe Andrew Buck. Jy was seker ’n engeltjie toe jy n kind was..... – JUSTINE ) Thank you to Daphne of Super Seconds for amazing customer service. – BARBARA BRYDEN ) If your dog is frightened u should take the dog to training classes where it will learn to socialise. Yes, I did not get elected and yes I am the owner of Fusion. You are completely ignorant on the Whale Festival and you are spreading malicious rumours. Fusion did not secure any table reservations at R100 nor did we charge any other fees. We conducted business as usual. Now He has blessed me once again with another 3x3 to have a bigger space to move around cause I am disabled. God is so good I just wish and pray daily for those guys in town (homeless) that they too will realise that there is hope. – JACKIE ) Taxis with school children are driving like crazy on HemelenAarde Valley road, overtaking on solid white lines at 100 km. Highest award bestowed on Prof Ernst Sonnendecker
9
KERRY VAN RENSBURG In recognition of his distinguished contribution to the art and science of medicine, Professor Ernst Sonnendecker was elected a Fellow Ad Eundem of the College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, by The Colleges of Medicine of South Africa (CMSA). This rare honour and special recognition was bestowed on Prof Sonnendecker at an admissions ceremony of the CMSA which took place at the University of the Witwatersrand on 15 May. On 4 June, back home in Hermanus, he celebrated his 80th birthday. After a long and distinguished career, where he served as professor and academic head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of the Witwatersrand, and chief specialist at Johannesburg Hospital, Sonnendecker and his wife Cynthia, retired to Hermanus in 2001. But Sonnendecker, who began his medical studies at Wits at the age of 16 in 1951, did not come to Hermanus to sit idly and enjoy the mountains and the sea for the rest of his days. Because teaching and learning remain close to his heart, Sonnendecker spent six years as an Extraordinary Professor in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Stellenbosch University In 1998, his passion concerning menopausal issues, led him to establish the South African Menopause Society (SAMS) and in 2000 he was subsequently elected as the organisation’s founding president. Sonnendecker still practises at Vincent Palloti Hospital where he attends to women with menopausal or osteoporotic issues. Despite his achievements, Sonnendecker remains humble, saying matter-of-factly that
Prof Ernst Sonnendecker, a medical doctor specialising in obstetrics and gynaecology received recognition for his life-time contribution to medicine and was elected a Fellow Ad Eundem at a recent awards ceremony held at Wits. He has lived in Hermanus with his wife Cynthia since 2001. few South Africans have been elected to Fellow Ad Eundem. This fellowship recognises and acknowledges Sonnendecker’s exceptional contribution as an excellent teacher, superb clinician, researcher and outstanding surgeon. His particular interest was the management of women with ovarian cancer, and he contributed significantly to their treatment both nationally and internationally. He enjoys travel, reading, environmental issues, classical music and scientific courses.

The award for the mayoral trophy for environmental conservation will be handled by the Overstrand Environmental Department.
Well motivated nominations can be sent to Liezl Bezuidenhout at lbezuidenhout@overstrand.gov.za. Nominations for Overstrand women who have made a difference in their area and ought to be considered for a woman of the year award, can be submitted to Elize Verrij at everrij@overstrand.gov.za. Achievers of excellence in communities are also identified by councillors. Well motivated nominations can be handed to the relevant councillor or sent to Verrij. All nominations must be accompanied by contact details of the nominator and the nominee.

It cost me an arm and a leg, maar ek is ’n dromer en ons hou van lekker en mooi kos!”
Veranderinge sal net kom as daar ’n vraag daarna is. Ons noem haar the queen of beauty.”

‘Sorry, no gay weddings’ JANINE VAN DER RIET An engaged lesbian couple have been left very bitter and sad when, according to the brides-to-be, they were told by an employee of a Stanford wedding venue “sorry, no gay weddings”. Rocky Medina and her partner, Ericka, have been dating for seven years and been engaged for five years and decided to at last tie the knot. “We saw several venues in the area and being the typical girls, planning the big day, we bought two bridal magazines on Tuesday (17 June). We saw venues in the Western Cape and one of them was Beloftebos. We loved the name from the get go! We checked their website and it was a dream come true. Until I phoned them...” Medina says she phoned the wedding coordinator at Beloftebos, Danica Steyn, on the same day.
“I called and introduced myself. I mentioned that we love the wedding venue and we want to book it for our wedding, a gay wedding. As soon as I said that, Steyn said “sorry no gay weddings” and she put the phone down. We were shocked.” “We are in a loving life committed relationship. We are surrounded by friends and family that truly love us, we share the same values and have the same needs as anybody else and now. Now we are being treated like we are sub-humans, like we are doing something so wrong,” Medina said. After the Hermanus Times asked for comment from Beloftebos about the incident, Andries de Villiers, owner, said in an email: “I confirm that I am taking advice on the matter and will not be in a position to comment by your deadline.” On the allegation that Steyn put the phone down before Medina could continue to speak, De Villiers said it is untrue.

The international Anne Frank travelling exhibition being hosted in the foyer of the Overstrand Municipality, was officially opened by Mayor Nicolette Botha-Guthrie on the evening of 1 July. The exhibition, which runs until 17 July, tells the story of Anne Frank against the background of the Holocaust and the Second World War. In her speech, the mayor outlined how thirteen-year-old Anne Frank wrote her diary between 12 June 1942 and 1 August 1944 in the form of letters addressed to a fictitious character named Kitty. The diary reveals the everyday life of Jewish people in hiding and establishes a symbolic link to the suffering of the Jewish population during World War II. Anne Frank – a history for today, has travelled all over the world, and is presented more
than 300 times per year. The tour is coordinated by the Anne Frank House, but locally by the Cape Town Holocaust Centre. The mayor told guests that the aim of the exhibition is to inform visitors about the history of the Holocaust from the perspective of Anne and her family. “It also shows visitors that cultural, ethnic, religious and political differences between people exist in every society.” said BothaGuthrie. “This exhibition challenges visitors to think about concepts such as tolerance, mutual respect, human rights, an open opportunity society and democracy. “Finally, it helps visitors to understand that a society where differences between people are respected, does not come about by itself. Legislation is of course necessary, but people also have to make a personal commitment.”

The old ‘wasbakkies’ site on the clifftop between Swallow Park and Hermanuspietersfontein has been cleared and a plaque detailing its historical significance placed nearby.
Granite plaques record history of Hermanus The history and heritage of Hermanus have been the focus of a recent Ward 3 project, which has resulted in the addition of granite plaques inscribed with historical details being placed at eight historically significant sites. For the past three years the ward committee of Ward 3 has focused on the town’s tourism attractions and have therefore spent all their funds in and around the CBD area. Other wards in the Overstrand Municipality have spent their ward allocation on projects in their residential areas, whereas the Ward
3 committee found it prudent to upgrade the CBD to attract and impress tourists and investors. Previous projects included the upgrading of CBD sidewalks, improvements to Swallow Park, the addition of two sundials, convenient parking at HermanusPietersfontein, cliff path maintenance and so forth. In compiling the 2013/14 budget, the Ward 3 committee decided to allocate funds to the History Society, which has wanted to make the town’s history more visual and informative. Discussions owere held between Angela Heslop from the History Society and Don
Kearney, the Overstrand’s area manager. The History Society initially wanted to print brochures for distribution to tourists and have the stolen brass history plaques replaced. Kearney, impressed by the design and material used for the sundials in Swallow Park, suggested using granite slabs instead of the riskier brass or stainless steel plaques. He proposed sand-coloured granite on sandstone-clad pedestals to depict historic facts of Hermanus at various sites. Such pedestals would complement the stone walls visible all over town. “I asked the History Society to draft the wording for
NATURE MATTERS
The world’s tiniest frog can be found in the Overstrand.
Did you know: The world’s tiniest frog clings to life here in parts of the Overstrand. The micro frog (Mi crobatrachella capensis) is only the size of a finger nail. It occurs in just a few areas between Bet ty’s Bay and Cape Agulhas and

each plaque,” says Kearney, “and the municipality arranged for the construction of the pedestals and also supplied the plaques with the engraving.” After the wording was finalised, site visits were held to decide on the location of the plaques and what structures they should be mounted onto. Kearney approached the two volunteers who had been involved with the Swallow Park sundials, namely Dr Pierre de Villiers and Chris Theron, to provide assistance with the delicate operation of fixing the engraved granite history plaques to their pedestals. Many residents would not know what the “wasbakkies” were and although the ruins just below the cliff top are not that impressive, the history displayed on the plaque on the cliff top, adjacent to the Western corner of Swallow Park, is most interesting.
For their involvement in the project, Kearney thanked Dr Pierre de Villiers and the Astronomy Society for designing the first granite sundial in Hermanus that was instrumental in setting the trend. For assisting with the mounting of the plaques, Keraney thanked the History Society, and in particular Angela Heslop, Robin Lee and Es-

Taswill Siegels and Cheswin Pietersen from the Overstrand Municipality were part of the team that ensured the plaques were placed on specially built stone plinths.

Learners plant a beefriendly garden Following on from the fascinating talk on bees hosted by Whale Coast Conservation (WCC), six volunteers from Hermanus High School tackled the establishment of a bee forage garden at the Green House. The rather difficult terrain was prepared and pollen-producing plants were planted in between existing Chasmanthe. “Our thanks go to Walker Bay Nursery that donated the ‘starter pack’ of beautiful plants, including a ‘blushing bride’ in full bloom,” says Anina Lee, communications manager at WCC. The volunteer work undertaken by the learners is part of the life orientation programme at the school. Peter Burger, senior manager: operations at the Overstrand Municiplaity, says the Zwelihle sports fields had a major upgrade two years ago. “With over 33 soccer teams playing on the fields, it is difficult to maintain them and keep them in peak condition. “More money was spent on the A field during the last financial year to improve the quality of the playing surface.” He says: “There is, however, a problem with the sewage pump station, which is situated inside the soccer field. The consulting engineers, in conjunction with the relevant contractor, are currently working on this problem as a matter of urgency.”

Learners from local schools who are members of the ET Robo Club, meet every Wednesday and Friday afternoon. Solomon Manjeya, facilitator of the Big Vision project and robotics at Enlighten, says Lego Mindstorm robotics kits are used to build robots to carry out tasks. “The robot is programmed from a lap-top and the program then downloaded to a small ‘brick’ computer in the robot to enable it to act according to the program instructions,” explains Solomon. “On a weekly basis we deal with 23 learners for Mindstorms Robotics and 11 for WEDO Robotics (junior robotics),” says Solomon. The club activities are linked to the worldwide First Lego League (FLL), which arranges international competitions for members. Competitions start on a regional basis, then move on to national level, with the winners taking part in the international finals in the US or Europe. In September each year a new challenge is announced, focusing on a different realworld topic. Learners research the topic and propose suitable solutions for the problems raised. The robotics part of the competition is concerned with the design and programming of robots to complete tasks. Past themes have included problems faced by senior citizens, food health and safety, climate change, medical science and nanotechnology. Throughout the competition, teams are judged on their teamwork, cooperation, professionalism, acceptance of other teams and sportsmanship. “The club integrates science, technology, engineering and mathematics with robotics. The program gives learners hands-on experience in designing, building, and programming robots, while developing leadership, teamwork, and project management skills that will prepare them for the future.” To find out more about the robotics club, contact Solomon Manjeya at 083 783 2152 or email: bigvision@enlighten.org.za.
James Le Roux, Sithembiso Sithole (looking away with cap on), Karo Beets, Simeon Jaques and Breyten Beets discuss the intricacies of their robotic world at the Enlighten Education Centre.

Children from Zwelihle visited HAWS recently as part of the 4Paws project. Learners from Hermanus High were also present as part of their community outreach programme.
Petcare kids visit HAWS Marlene Deneeghere, one of Hermanus Animal Welfare Society’s (HAWS) cat volunteers and the 4Paws Pet Care trainees, all pupils from Lukhanyo Primary School in Zwelihle, visited HAWS recently. The children were taken there to meet the dogs and cats, while the staff at HAWS talked to them about adoption and pet sterilisation. In addition, the children listened to a talk by the Overberg K9 dog unit members. On the same day there were some pupils from Hermanus High School at the kennels by chance, walking dogs as part of a commu-
nity outreach programme. The pupils also interacted with the youngsters on the training program. The 4Paws project was initiated by Deneeghere and friends, in co-operation with the Enlighten Education Trust, to teach children about pet care. The project consists of a series of nine lectures, with 15 children taking part in each series. They use a workbook and computers , do homework and are tested on what they have learnt. It is planned to roll out the project to other schools in the area once the pilot project has been completed.

Walk 67 minutes for Madiba For 67 years Nelson Mandela devoted his life to the service of humanity as a human rights lawyer, a prisoner of conscience, an international peacemaker and the first democratically chosen president of a free South Africa. Madiba had a long walk to freedom, a pioneer indeed and you can be one too. Development of the Cliff Path Biodiversity Park, between Gearing’s Point and Fick’s Pool, is imminent and you could be among the first to walk this walk. The project is a collaboration between Ward 3 of the Overstrand Municipality and the Cliff Path Management Group. Planning of the project is sourced from the information received from the ex-
tremely successful Greenpoint Biodiversity Park, which has received great accolades and plenty of support on websites and social media. In Hermanus the footprint will be adapted to the unique surroundings in the area. All you need to do is donate 67 minutes of your time on a 1 km beautiful section of Hermanus Cliff Path. The aim is to clear alien plants and collect litter and embrace the project. Refuse bags will be provided, but bring garden gloves and spades. All Madiba Day volunteers are requested to meet at the Gearing’s Point parking area (Windsor Hotel side) at 11:00 on Friday 18 July. Call 083 650 4206 for info.

Western Star and Freightliner trucks shine in latest Transformers movie QUICKPIC Already a well-known, powerful presence on the roads of South Africa, a Western Star and Freightliner from the Daimler Trucks stable make their presence felt in Hollywood. blockbuster style, and they set the screen alight. Anticipation has been running high for the release of the Paramount Pictures “Transformers: Age of Extinction” movie, which is recognised for high-paced action sequences that put a spectacular array of trucks and cars in the limelight. The fourth movie in the Transformers series is given an extra boost when the role of the vehicular lead character, Optimus Prime, morphs into a blinged-out Western Star. The Western Star will share the screen with a Freightliner truck but movie fans will need to watch the film to learn more about its character. “Rugged and tough, commercial vehicle customers in South Africa choose purpose-built Western Star trucks when they need a highly specialised solution for heavy-duty applications both on and the off-highway,” says marketing and sales divisional manager at Daimler Trucks South Africa, Godfrey Hani. The Western Star takes on the most demanding applications, just as Optimus Prime takes on epic battles in the name of justice across the universe. “Merging the two heroes in this movie thus makes perfect sense,” Hani adds.
The Western Star takes on the most demanding applications, just as Optimus Prime takes on epic battles across the universe in the name of justice . PHOTO: QUICKPIC Developed specifically for the new Michael Bay film by Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA), many styling cues for the Optimus Prime character were leveraged from a new Western Star on-highway vehicle that will be unveiled in the USA later in 2014. “When the producers of the film approached us to create the new Op-
timus Prime, we knew we already had the perfect truck in the works and that it would be an ideal partnership to showcase our dedication to engineering, design and building the most rugged and reliable trucks in the industry,” said Andy Johnson, brand manager for Western Star, Daimler Trucks in North America.
“Being part of the Michael Bay Transformers film franchise is a unique opportunity; here vehicles are stars, and we’re thrilled that Western Star is a major part of this iconic franchise.” Similarly, the Freightliner truck that debuts in “Transformers: Age of Extinction” has been a stalwart of the Daimler Trucks commercial
vehicle stable globally. In South Africa, these vehicles attract fanatical freight business owners due to the products’ flexibility in serving a wide range of industries and commercial applications. It is widely touted as the vehicle of choice for long-haul trucking. For more information about the Western Star and Freightliner trucks from Daimler Trucks South Africa, please visit www.westernstar.co.za or www.freightliner.co.za. “Transformers: Age of Extinction” is the fourth film in director Michael Bay’s global blockbuster franchise, starring Mark Wahlberg, Stanley Tucci, Bing Bing Li, Kelsey Grammer, Sophia Myles, T. J. Miller, Nicola Peltz, Jack Reynor and Titus Welliver. The film begins after an epic battle that leaves a great city torn, but the world saved. As humanity picks up the pieces, a shadowy group attempts to control history, while an ancient, powerful menace sets Earth in its cross-hairs. With help from a new cast of humans, Optimus Prime and the Autobots rise to the challenge. In an incredible adventure, they are swept up in a war of good and evil, ultimately leading to a climactic battle across the world. “Transformers: Age of Extinction” is based on Hasbro’s TransformersT Action Figures and written by Ehren Kruger, directed by Michael Bay.

Wanted! 20 contestants for 2014 Ranger Odyssey QUICKPIC The 2014 edition of Ford South Africa’s action-packed Ranger Odyssey is set to continue from where last year’s epic cross-continent adventure left off. This year’s competition is now officially open to the public, and will see 20 brave contestants embarking on the trip of a lifetime. After a rigorous selection process, the top contenders will be chosen to tackle the extreme challenge of Kaokoland in northern Namibia in a fleet of mighty Ford Rangers during September. “The Ranger Odyssey gives contestants the chance to experience the adventure of a lifetime,” explains Ford Marketing Manager Gavin Golightly. “The Ranger is built Ford tough, and through this competition we aim to bring together a group of ordinary people with an adventurous spirit to experience the best Africa has to offer.” Last year, 10 finalists experienced a truly life-changing 22-day trip encompassing six countries and 8 000 km through rugged Africa. They pushed themselves and the vehicles to the limit as they experienced the majesty of Mount Kilimanjaro and the Maasai people of Kenya, the awe inspiring Ngorongoro Crater with its abundant wildlife, and Bagamoyo, Tanzania, the source of East Africa’s slave trade. This was followed by the beauty of Zambia, the breath-taking Makgadikgadi Pans and Northern Tuli Game Reserve in Botswana, along with the far northern stretches of the Kruger National Park and

PHOTO: QUICKPIC southern Mozambique before returning to South Africa. Although only one person walked away as overall winner for the 2013 event, each one of the contestants emerged with new-found self-respect, inspiration and the desire to explore more of the great African continent. That the mighty Ford Ranger was the hero of the Odyssey was, of course, beyond dispute. However, long before the 2014 finalists head off to the far north of Namibia, the process kicks off with
a call to action in July during which aspirant adventurers are invited to submit an online entry via the Ranger Odyssey website (www.rangerodyssey.com). The campaign is supported by adverts on radio and television, as well as in print and social media. Entries close on 20 July. Once the entry has been registered on the website, the applicants will be asked to visit their local Ford dealership and take a “selfie” with the Odyssey-edition Ford Ranger and post it on the website to qualify
to be selected as part of the final 20. Ford South Africa has produced 120 Special Edition Odyssey Rangers at its Silverton Assembly Plant in Pretoria for distribution to the dealer network in the build-up to this high-profile competition. Although the distinctive Odyssey Rangers are expected to attract plenty of attention on Ford showroom floors across the country, the candidates will be hoping that they attract the attention of the selection panel and are among the 40 who will

be chosen to attend the Ranger Odyssey Boot Camp from 22 to 24 August. This intensive training and assessment session takes place over three days at De Rust Outdoor near Hartbeespoort Dam, home to Ford’s official off-road driving academy. All of the candidates will be trained and evaluated on the essential aspects of 4x4 driving, navigation, team work, physical and mental stamina as well as camp craft. Ultimately just 20 contestants will be chosen for the main event, which takes place in the remote Kaokoland from 7 to 19 September. The roughly 2 500 km route encompasses some of Namibia’s most spectacular and arduous terrain, including the notorious Van Zyl’s Pass and the famous Purros Loop, renowned for its desert elephants. Unlike last year where the contestants competed on an individual basis, for the 2014 Ranger Odyssey they will be paired up in teams of two. The 10 teams will be evaluated and scored throughout the trip by the judges. Aside from it being a genuinely life-altering adventure, the contestants will also be vying for the main prize. Each member of the winning team will get to drive an Odyssey Ranger for a year and will receive R5 000 for fuel per month. For further information on the Ranger Odyssey go to www.rangerodyssey.com and follow @FordSouthAfrica on Twitter using the #RangerOdyssey hashtag. Yet again, blushes were spared at the bottom end by a guest who, admittedly, had not played for three years during which half his body was replaced.

More cricket in business league’s new short over format More teams, shorter overs and more playing time. This is what the upcoming business league cricket season has in store for players and fans. The league had 21 teams participating last season and has now grown to 24 teams with the Hermanus High School also back on board. To ensure all the teams play more cricket, the 10 over format has been reduced to 8 overs per side and also two matches per evening will be played, which also gives other teams a chance to socialise with each other. The Pennypinchers Business League is an event the Cricket Club and the general public of Hermanus can certainly be proud of. This
season over 250 matches will be played. With so many fixtures being played, the season will also start sooner and the opening weekend will start on 5 and 6 September. All the players are encouraged to start getting their groups together for practises. Due to the structures of the business league and the demand for the competition growing, the club has also appointed a sub-committee to help keep the tradition going at the club. In keeping with tradition, Pennypinchers has again agreed to be the title sponsor and they have done so since the first competition started 13 years ago. Mahmood Malik from Penguin Sports, who recently opened a sport-shop in the new Carriages centre, will be one of the suppliers of
