CALEDON: WIND FARM OPERATIONAL IN JANUARY; STANFORD PROPOSAL RECONSIDERED

First wind farm tower ANNETTE THERON HEDDA MITTNER

AND

T

he first tower at the Klip-Heuvel wind farm in Caledon went up last week and is visible from Houw Hoek Pass on a clear day. The turbine, which stands 95 m tall, is one of nine currently being erected at Klip-Heuvel. These gigantic wind turbines may soon become a familiar sight as KlipHeuvel is not the only wind farm development proposed for the area. Renewable Energy Systems Southern Africa (RES SA), a renewable energy project developer based in Cape Town, is proposing to establish a wind farm about 30 km southeast of Hermanus near Stanford.

The Walker Bay Wind Energy Facility will consist of a cluster of up to 11 wind turbines to be constructed on the Groot Vlei farm over an area of about 9 km. According to the Background Information Document (BID) on the proposal, the turbines proposed for this project will have a hub height of 80 to 120 m and an estimated capacity ranging from 1,8 to 3MW. The project is expected to connect to the Stanford substation, located about 10 km from the site. Jo-Anne Thomas of Savannah Environmental, the independent consultant appointed by RES SA to undertake the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process, confirmed that the final EIA Scoping Report was approved by the Department of Environmental Affairs

Wind giants

The 40storey high wind turbines at KlipHeuvel are among the largest in the world. The tower onwhichthebladesstandweighsapproximate ly 290 tons. It is set in place in 4 parts as it is too large to be erected as a single element. The blades themselves weigh about 14 tons each. The hub weighs 30 tons and the nacelle 120 tons. Each foundation contains approximately 55 tons of steel and about 468 m³ of cement.

(DEA) in February 2012. Thomas said that specialist studies for the EIA report are still under way and she could not confirm how long these would take. The BID states that construction of the wind farm is estimated to begin in 2014 and the farm should be up and

running 12 months later. However, when Hermanus Times contacted the development director at RES SA, Duncan Ayling, who heads up the Walker Bay project, he said the project is being reconsidered due to the fact that the area is particularly environmentally sensitive. “The fact that the project has been proposed does not mean that it will necessarily go ahead,” he said. “The reports from the environmental specialists indicate that the area might not be suitable for such a large project. If it were to progress it would mean changing the size and nature of the project and we’ll have to start again at the beginning. We would of course like to go ahead as we believe in the project, but we are responsible developers.” Five proposals are known to be on the table for the Overberg area: the

proposal at Stanford; the Klip-Heuvel wind farm at Caledon that is currently under construction; a six-turbine wind farm to be known as Dassiefontein; a 31-turbine installation across three farms by Caledon Wind; and then the Langhoogte development at Bot River, the largest of all, with 44 turbines. The Langlaagte proposal has not been warmly received by all residents. Residents have expressed concern about the possible detrimental effect of the turbines on tourism, property values, bird life and the aesthetic appeal of the area. Their objections include noise pollution, the “shadow flicker” (a continuous shadow cast by the rotating blades) and the 132 Kv overhead power lines that will need to be put up. Read more on p. 3.

SAPS SMSes ‘fraudulent’ JANINE VAN DER RIET The South African Police Service has noted that the public is receiving SMSes from a computer-generated source relating to police matters. The following are examples of such SMSes: “A case of murder has been opened. Please contact Cst Zweni for more info” and “A criminal case has been opened against you. Please contact Cst Zweni for more info”.

According to Lieutenant Fadila September, spokesperson for the Hermanus police, the cellular number to be called with regard to these messages is 071 942 3825, but it may vary between different cases.“As this office has a member named Constable Zweni, we thought it might be relevant, but after consultation with the member, it was established that she has nothing to do with it.” The public is warned not to react on these messages and not to submit any personal information.

Suspect arrested for attack, not for murder JANINE VAN DER RIET The Hermanus police has apologised after incorrect information was provided and published in an article in the Hermanus Times last week (“Man arrested after murder of woman”). The article stated that a suspect had been arrested in connection with 85-year-old Noreen van der Walt’s murder. The correct fact is that the suspect was arrested, but not in connection with Van der Walt’s murder, but for the attack on a 73-year old woman on Friday 13 September in Eastcliff. The woman had been hit over the head and in the face several times with an unknown object before the intruder fled the scene with her handbag, containing her wallet, identity document and several other personal belongings.

She was transferred to a hospital in Somerset West in a serious, but stable condition. She is still recovering in hospital at present. The 40-year-old suspect from Zwelihle appeared in the Hermanus Magistrate’s Court and will be sent for psychiatric evaluation to determine whether or not he is mentally disturbed, after which a decision will be made on whether or not he is fit to stand trial. The police is still investigating Van der Walt’s murder and no arrests have been made. In a statement, Lieutenant Fadila September, spokesperson for the Hermanus police, says there had been a “miscommunication” that “caused confusion regarding the two cases”. “This office would like to state that the 40-year-old suspect was arrested for the house robbery and attack that occurred in Eastcliff.” Anyone with information must contact Hermanus SAPS on 028 313 5300.

Scarlet, then and now JANINE VAN DER RIET In May the Hermanus Times published an article on one-year-old Scarlet who was confiscated by the Hermanus Animal Welfare Society (HAWS) after they received complaints about abuse and malnutrition. In June, while in the care of HAWS, she was thriving. Volunteer animal “whisperer” and trainer, Naomi, and HAWS staff helped her to get over her ordeal.

Scarlet in May this year, neglected and abused.

Shortly after she became strong she was adopted by a loving family and today, the past no longer haunts her and her future looks brighter with lots of love from her new family.

Now, a few months later, in her new home. She is very happy with her new family who love her to bits.

Car thief sent to jail for five years A 26-year-old man was sentenced to five years in prison after he was found guilty of stealing a car. Itumeleng Thapela was sentenced on 19 September in the Hermanus Magistrate’s Court for the theft committed in December last year. The owner of the car had parked his vehicle

and gone to bed. He discovered the theft the following morning. Thapela was declared unfit to possess a firearm. Colonel Nomana Adonis, the Hermanus SAPS station commander, congratulated the investigating officer, Constable Nosipho Xotyeni, on a very good investigation.

Wind farm should be running by end of January CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 The Langhoogte proposal at Bot River has been approved by the Department of Energy Affairs, but several community members and organisations have submitted a written letter of appeal against this approval. The deadline for appeal was 4 October. Klip-Heuvel is the only wind farm in the Overberg to get out of the starting blocks so far. The components for eight of the nine turbine components have been delivered, with the last set due for delivery by the end of this week. Cold commissioning and primary equip-

ment testing will begin on the Eskom sub-station next week. “At the very latest, the wind farm should be fully operational and completed by the end of January,” says Gerald Francis, site manager of Biotherm, the company developing the wind farm at Klip-Heuvel. According to Francis, the amount of energy that will be fed into the national grid is wind dependent, but based on recent wind trends, the turbines should be quite capable of producing between 15 and 27 MW. This equates to between 2 500 and 3 000 homes being provided with electricity from the wind farm.

The sixth-generation farmers of Klip-Heuvel, brothers Pieter and Marius Beukes, with their father Izak, said the project is progressing well. Marius said they would embark upon such a project again because wind farms are advantageous to the environment and also for the community, as the community trust will be ploughing funds back into the community within a 50 km radius of the farm. “At this stage it’s not clear what will be done for the community, but Biotherm wants to bring about positive change.” He said once the wind farm is up and running, the community trust will also be established.

Businesses could benefit from the incentives offered by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI). This was said by the minister of the department, Dr Rob Davies, who recently addressed the Hermanus Business Chamber and delegates at an event organised by the chamber at the Whale Coast Hotel. Davies focused on the incentives via intervention from the DTI, saying the incentives must result in sustainable economic activity and address clearly identified market failure/growth opportunity. Some of the incentives applicable to the Overstrand are in the fields of aquaculture, film and TV production and business incubator programmes. In the Western Cape, the focus is on aquaculture development and enhancement and the DTI is spending R129 million on four projects, while a further five are under consideration. Davies was very interested in the wave energy project of Abagold. This is an innovative project for harnessing alternative energy right here in Hermanus. According to Dr Pierre Hugo, who is heading this project, it is particularly suited to the topography of the cliff face at the New Harbour. “The installation will have minimal visual impact as the sloped wall will be lower than the harbour wall and will take on the colour of the cliffs behind it. It will not be visible from land and hardly visible from the sea,” says Hugo.

PHOTO: JANHENDRIK COETZER However, Abagold is looking for funding, since it will cost approximately R17 million. Hugo gave Davies a DVD with all the relevant information. Grants are also available to SA entities involved in fish hatcheries and fish farms (primary aquaculture), processing and preserving of aquaculture fish (secondary aquaculture), and service activities to operators of hatcheries and fish farms (ancillary aquaculture). Grants of 20% to 45% are available for investment in land, buildings, machinery and equipment, as well as commercial vehicles, work boats and bulk infrastructure. Davies said the DTI is currently spending most of its budget on growing the film industry to create jobs and transfer skills. The DTI encourages private sec-

tor partnership with government to support incubators to develop and nurture SMMEs (Small, Medioum and Micro Enterprises) into sustainable enterprises. Registered South African legal entities can apply, as well as registered higher education or further education institutions in partnership with the private sector, and licensed and/or registered science councils in partnership with the private sector. The DTI offers 50:50 cost-sharing support for large private sector investors; 60:40 cost-sharing support for SMMEs – capped at a maximum of R10 million per financial year over a three-year period. More information is on the website: www.thedti.gov.za, and government incentives website: www.investmentincentives.co.za.

Several residents of Voëlklip and Kwaaiwater were furious when on Friday the water supply to their homes was cut off for most of the day without prior notice from the Overstrand Municipality. But besides being without water supply from 10:00 to 17:30 on Friday 4 October, residents were even more concerned about the thousands of litres of water spouting from outlets in Reservoir Road continuously since Wednesday. “Its been running for over three days, 24 hours a day,” a Voëlklip resident said. “Tens of thousands of litres of water is wasted that we pay for – and it just continues unabated.” The municipality managed to stop one of the outlets on Friday midmorning. Area manager Don Kearney explained that a valve on the main water supply to the Voëlklip reservoir leaked and they had difficulty draining the pipe to replace the valve. “Apart from this problem, two other water pipes broke in the same area and had to be fixed, otherwise more residents would have been without water.” One resident says an SMS from the

Overstrand Municipality informing residents of what was going on, was only sent on Friday at 13:15, three days after the problem started. The SMS read: “Water supply to Voëlklip and Kwaaiwater is currently interrupted due to emergency repairs to the main water supply. Envisaged completion by 16:00. Our apologies.” The pipe was repaired on Friday at around 17:30, but the water was apparently dark brown for a few hours thereafter and unsuitable for consumption. Kearney apologises for not letting residents know in good time that they will be without water for most of the day. “It was an oversight on our side as normally our pro-active approach in letting the public know ahead of time has a positive impact.” He further explained that the plans they have for the area concerned are outdated and some of the pipes were moved when the golf course was built. It was therefore unclear where all the valves are situated. “Water is a precious commodity and we should treat it that way. Thank you to everyone who made the effort to call and let us know about this incredible waste.”

waar daar nood is. ) AGS Kerk Kospakkies: Dié kerk neem oor by Badisa wanneer mense meer as een keer ’n kospakkie benodig.

Alles is egter nou herstel.

Bona Dea Estate in Hemelen-Aarde Valley has joined the generous individuals and businesses in Hermanus that are pulling together to raise the funds needed to upgrade the security at Camphill School. As the school’s neighbour, this luxury estate and function venue will be hosting the Bona Dea charity fund-raising ball on 2 November. The event will include fine dining, dancing and the auction of luxury items that include a young race horse and a holiday on the Greek island, Skiathos. The co-owners of Bona Dea, Robert and Diddi Johnson, are responding to the urgent need at Camphill for security upgrades that include fencing an unprotected area of about 500 m and gated access to the premises. Camphill houses children and adults who are mentally challenged and their safety has been compromised by a spate of burglaries and attempted burglaries in recent months. “The Bona Dea charity ball is rapidly gaining momentum,” says Diddi. “Our friends, suppliers and business contacts are rallying together to help raise a serious amount of cash for Camphill. Donations tax certificates are in place for sponsors and donors from R5 000 in value, and we are extremely grateful for the generous sponsorships that are streaming in. “Hamilton Russell Vineyards have come on board by sponsoring the wine for the evening to the amount of about R35 000, and Anthony Hamilton Russell will be our MC for the event.

By Tseng is haar musiekonderwyseres, dr. Joan Wootton.

The Rotary Club of Hermanus hosted their annual fund-raising Wine and Art auction on Sunday 6 October at La Vierge in the Hemel and Aarde Valley. The event was well attended by more than 100 guests and Rotarians. Well-known winemaker Beyers Truter from Beyerskloof Wine Estate acted as auctioneer. His sense of humour and knowledge of wine assured top prices achieved for the 49 lots. Proceeds will go to many of the charities and service projects that rely on Rotary for support. This year Rotary’s international theme is “Engage Rotary, Change Lives”.

YOU CAN HAVE YOUR CAKE AND EAT IT! Studio Health’s Delicious Healthy Cake Competition held at Volmoed in the Hemel & Aarde Valley on Saturday morning was won by Ingrid Vermeulen. The motivation for the contest was to bring as many recipes together that defy conventional methods of baking by incorporating healthy and tasty alternatives. Please reconsider the Fynbos ‘glips’ EDITORIAL COMMENT Wisen up on wind farms With the 9-turbine wind farm at KlipHeuvel near Caledon now under construction, the possibility of similar wind energy facilities even closer to home has become a reality. Klip-Heuvel is only the first of five proposals to get out of the starting blocks. A further three proposals in the Caledon/Bot River area and one near Stanford are also on the cards. It is time for residents of this scenic and environmentally sensitive area to confront the question: Is this what we want? Many communities are divided in their opinion – some believe that the wind farms will have a detrimental effect on the environment, specifically by killing birds in large numbers, causing noise pollution and necessitating unsightly transmission power lines. Others believe that the environmental impact will be minimal compared to that of traditional energy sources as wind farms consume no fuel and emit no air pollution. Whatever your feelings, this is the time to get involved. Start by reading up about wind farms, gathering information and asking the right questions. Once these proposals have been approved, it may be too late to have your voice heard.

After the recently published article about the stormy meeting between the Fynbos Park committee and the management team of the municipality about the refuse removal, please allow me to shed some light on the origins of Fynbos Park. It was started by one of the greatest men that ever lived in Hermanus, the Reverend Claude Mitchell. During the late 80s and 90s, Sofca (Society for the care of the aged) was founded by Rev. Mitchell after elderly people were found in total neglect, bedridden, sickly and hungry. I was very fortunate and blessed to be one of his assistants. In one case we found an elderly couple in a back room in Long Street, living with rats and sharing their meagre supply of food. He then rented some houses and we turned them into frail care centres with the help of some wonderful people in Hermanus and the Overberg who donated and raised money. They also did voluntary work to keep this going, but it had its problems. Then sitting in his office one day, he told us that we must build a centre of our own with accommodation and a frail care centre in Hermanus to look after our frail and elderly. When I asked him where we would get

PIET SE KLIP: These photos taken by Giangi Negra, the owner of Bientang’s Cave, show the Cape cormorants that take refuge on Piet se Klip in front of the restaurant.

the funds to do that, he looked at me and said that we had the greatest partner anyone can have. While holding his arm above his head and pointing upwards, he said: “We must trust in God”. The next stage was that he acquired the property, Fynbos Park was built and for every unit sold, a certain amount went to what is today a 65-bed frail care centre. The owners and tenants were offered subsidised meals and in-house frail care. Claude Mitchell died the day after Sofca was officially opened. Mission completed. Taking the above into consideration I cannot understand how on earth anyone can with the stroke of a pen increase the fees tenfold while we are all struggling to keep head above water with increased rates, electricity and now refuse removal. I am at present the chairman of a small 50-unit development and I know for a fact that there are some elderly couples living on below R4 000 per month, so that R140 per month means cutting down even further on a desperate struggle for survival. Please reconsider this increase which I am sure was a glips and assist in helping the people on the ground. We all make mistakes and we will forgive you for yours.

HANNES STEENKAMP SANDBAAI

Negra also took this photo of whale wat chers on Piet se Klip who, according to Ne gra, regularly chase away the cormorants and seals.

Piet se Klip must be declared a sanctuary

Kleinmond kids need transport to school Parents have children who have nowhere to go to school in Kleinmond, and therefore these children have to go to school in Hermanus (Laerskool Hermanus). However, the cost to get these children to school every day is exorbitant. It is vitally important that the DA create a bus system to Hermanus for these children. It is a government law and the right of all children to have education. Please DA, make a way for our children to get education and not have to use their food money for transport to get them to school. Parents are so desperate – it is either hungry children or uneducated children. What must parents do? Please make urgent and immediate decisions regarding our children’s future education. This is a long-term problem that has not been resolved. We love and trust the DA, but we need you to get to grass-root levels and solve these problems urgently. In the meantime, parents please get together so we can arrange lift clubs to schools and back from Kleinmond to Hermanus, until the DA is able to get this very urgent problem sorted.

KIM COOPER

In response to Ingo Schirmer’s letter “Piet se Klip is open to everyone at all times” (HT 03/10/13), I would like to comment as follows: It’s most unfortunate that after all these years Ingo Schirmer has still not realised why I’m trying to have Piet se Klip declared a marine wildlife sanctuary. Perhaps he has a bone to pick with me for having asked him to get off Piet se Klip a few years ago. He just doesn’t want to accept that it’s an important bird area, as well as a safe haven for other marine life. Unfortunately our environmental legislation has been so complex that it has been very difficult to identify which government authority has jurisdiction, particularly in relation to the coastal area. The Western Cape Provincial State of the Environment Outlook Report puts the problem very nicely when it says one of the major challenges to proper management of the marine and coastal environment is “mandate paralysis”, due to the confusion over who has jurisdiction over what. What we often need to do to achieve protection of areas of important biodiversity, is to help people understand the spirit and intent in proclaiming an area such as Piet se Klip a marine wildlife sanctuary. This spirit of stewardship requires patient education and encouragement of people to behave in the same spirit of stewardship – having consideration for other species in their natural environment. The legislation that is most relevant to the situation with Cape cormorants visiting Piet se Klip is the section of the National Environmental Biodiversity Act that lists “vulnerable species” and related “restricted activities”.

The Cape cormorant is listed as a vulnerable species and one of the restricted activities is “disturbing or harassing” them. If one looks at the intent, when Cape cormorants are roosting on Piet se Klip, people should not venture out there so that the birds will not be disturbed or harassed. The trick is how to educate people so that they will behave this way voluntarily. We need to have interpretive signage informing people about the status of the Cape cormorant and other vulnerable species that can be seen from time to time on Piet se Klip, to encourage them to use these opportunities when birds are roosting there in large numbers to observe and appreciate them, without disturbing them. Referring to the photos above, I ask this question: What would you rather see on Piet se Klip? All these birds were chased away by these over-zealous whale watchers. Could they not have stayed off the point and included all the birds in their photos? Unless a whale breaches out the water, it looks like a piece of kelp, even from Piet se Klip. It makes absolutely no sense to got onto the point and chase all the cormorants away. Look around you: Piet se Klip is the only rocky point in Walker Bay that is white from bird guano, not something you want to sit on. It is also teeming with bird lice, not something you want to have crawling all over you. This is their space, we must learn to respect it!

GIANGI NEGRA OWNER, BIENTANG’S CAVE

The Hermanus Times now regards this topic as dealt with. -Ed.

Why is municipality ‘targeting’ the elderly? With reference to the front page article Wie mislei vir wie? (HT 03/10/13): This article is biased and not the truth. First of all, it does not mention anywhere that Fynbos Park is in fact an old age retirement village. The residents, apart from 3% (55 to 64) are between 65 and heading towards 100 years. Therefore it is utterly false that they could have become “oproerig” (indicating revolt, insurrection and rioting)! The lady who questioned the qualifications of the municipal manager did not storm out of the room (“uit die vertrek gestorm”). She gathered her belongings and left at a normal pace, with her head held high. The other six or seven people who left before the meeting ended also did not behave badly. Now, one wonders why this bias in favour of the municipality. It was noticed by “us oldies” that the journalist arrived with Madam Mayor’s entourage. The obvious message of this article is to try and turn the people in free-standing houses against all the people who have for years been “cheating” by only paying for refuse under the sectional title act. What it does not say is that there are an awful lot of houses unoccupied for most of the year and that they too have to pay refuse charges per month, without there being any refuse to collect. Is this not onbillik (unfair) as well? Money for jam! The people who own second or third houses probably do not notice the R140 charge. The townships, I believe, do not pay R140 per month for refuse removal – but the retirement villages are expected to pay this. All right, let’s look at what R20 720 per month to the municipality does to the economy of Hermanus. Those months when all the houses are empty, the elderly help keep the businesses alive by perhaps stopping for tea and cake, occasionally buying a small gift for their grandchildren, having their hair cut, maybe buying a small treat for themselves or a friend, or even buying the Hermanus Times. They will now not be able to do this because R140 per month, to a pensioner, is a lot of money. R248 640 per year from only one retirement village! Do the maths, that is a lot of money no longer going into the businesses of Hermanus. So close down the restaurants, coffee shops, gift shops, the markets and clothes shops, etc, so that Hermanus will become like another “Brigadoon”, only appearing through the mists in the mountains for eight weeks every year. I suggest your financial guru looks a bit further into the consequences of targeting the old people living in the Overstrand. Finally, there are 148 units and the refuse is collected by people who are paid by Fynbos resident levies. The refuse is placed in 19 bins and collected by the municipality from one place. They do not have to drive around streets to 148 houses or send out men in advance to gather the refuse of five or six houses at a time and place it in one spot for the truck to collect. It does not take a genius to understand that the service provided by the municipality to this sectional title building is not the same as provided to other properties.

HEATHER GREEN

With regards to the perceived bias of the article, the Hermanus Times is satisfied that the facts in the article present an accurate reflection of the meeting. -Ed.

When did our old friend, Common sense, leave us? I have just read the most recent edition of the Hermanus Times, of the two boys who jumped off Piet se Klip. This follows various other articles about visitors to our town “finding themselves” in dangerous situations along the cliff paths, e.g. the lady who fell down near The Marine hotel and the teenager who fell to his death at the Old Harbour. I am tired of reading about how the municipality and everyone else is to blame for people and their inappropriate actions, which put their own lives in jeopardy. I shudder to think of what structures need to be erected to make our cliff paths safe. I must stress however, that I am not insensitive to loss of life and injury and am deeply saddened that anyone should carry sad memories about Hermanus. Maybe a few signs should be erected along the cliff paths, warning people that they will be heavily fined (say R2 000), should they be caught or seen engaging in dangerous behaviour along the cliff paths. But please, these signs should not be unduly enormous, like the “Welcome & Wamkilekile” signs, which are an eyesore to our beautiful town. I have included a quote, as it is so relevant to our present generation, who blames everyone else for their own actions. This quote is also quite pertinent to the article about

the 80-year-old Westcliff lady who died as a result of her injuries during a break in, but the 40-year-old perpetratorwillfirstreceivemental evaluation before judgement. While the lady is not even granted the right to be left alone and be safe in her own home, he has the right to every loophole possible. Common sense is dead. Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common sense, who had been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as knowing when to come in out of the rain, why the early bird gets the worm, life isn’t always fair and maybe it was my fault. Common sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don’t spend more than you earn) and reliable parenting strategies (adults, not children are in charge). His health began to deteriorate when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a six-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job they failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer Panado, sun lotion or a sticky plaster to a student but could not inform the parent when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion. Common sense lost the will to live as the Ten Commandments became contraband; churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims. Common sense took a beating when you couldn’t defend yourself against a burglar in your own home and the burglar would sue you for assault. Common sense finally gave up the will to live after a woman failed to realise that a steaming cup of hot coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap and was promptly awarded a huge settlement. Common sense was preceded in death by his parents; Truth and Trust; his wife Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility and his son, Reason. He is survived by three step-brothers: I know my rights, Someone else is to blame, and I am a victim. Not many attended his funeralbecausesofewrealisedhewas gone. – Unknown

The clouds moving in on Thursday will bring about 7 mm of rain over the weekend. But the wind patterns indicate a definite shift from winter towards spring and summer. Although it looks as if the sun is struggling to break through, be patient – good summer weather is on its way.

Blasphemy at Eisteddfod teaches disrespect In response to F.J.Strydom’s comment in the Hermanus Times (03/10/13) regarding the Overberg Eisteddfod’s Prize Winners Concert, I wish to stress the following: I not only fully agree with Strydom’s view that the relevant candidate received poor guidance and also that the words “Maria, are you pregnant? Did you have sexwithGod?”isnothingelsebutprofanation, but would like to add that it is blasphemy. I wonder if the winner of the Afrikaans andEnglishSeniorDramasectionswould have addressed these same derogative questions and used the name of Allah insteadofthenameofGodwhatthereaction of the audience would have been? Would there still have been skylarking and loud laughter? The fact that Strydom mentions that there was “groot gejil en luide geskater van die gehoor, onder wie talle skoolkinders” shows how much disrespect alreadyappearsamongstouryouthoftoday (and the adults that joined in). I find it absolutely amazing that nobody present at the concert made any objection.

How could Overberg Eisteddfod award any candidate uttering such derogative words? By the way, what is the purpose of Eisteddfods? Are they to teach our youth how to humiliate our fellow-beings’ God or religion? If anyone cannot even show respect for God or the God of someone else, whoever they believe God to be, what level of disrespect can be expected against their teachers, parents, elderly people, colleagues or other members of society? In closing I want to challenge the educational leaders as well as the spiritual leadersoftheOverbergtostandupagainstthis humiliating pronunciation and urge the Overberg Eisteddfod, its organisers/ members to recall the relevant prizes awarded for such derogative performances by the winning candidate. Could we allow our youth to have such a humiliating say from our public stages? At the recent Youth Conference at Sandton/Johannesburg Sir Richard Branson of Virgin said in his speech that the youth should call our leaders to responsibility.

FRED ROUSSEAU

Briewe Letters

10 October, 2013

‘Untamed’ makes for great debate I was most interested to read the letter from one of your readers which suggested that the magnificent artwork by sculptor Dylan Lewis on the seafront was a “drogbeeld” and satanic. I am chairman of the Overstrand Tourism Advisory Board but write this in my personal capacity. It is purposely in both English and Afrikaans which are the mediums that have been used in the letters which have appeared to date. I hope that the content is considered to be constructive and reinforces a view.

I certainly hope that Mrs Faure brings more thought-provoking works to be put along our cliff path. Perhaps with the outstanding work she does, she can get Hermanus to rival Sydney – which has wonderful works along its harbour – and maybe even surpass them. Keep up your endeavours – the works of art are for all of us to enjoy, criticise, love, hate but most of all fire up the neutrons which make for great discussions and debate.

“All art is subjective” With reference to the correspondence regarding the Dylan Lewis sculpture on the lawn above the Old Harbour: All art is subjective and a viewer will either gaze with pleasure or be mystified or even offended. And this is how it should be with art – it should raise questions and stimulate debate. Hermanus was indeed fortunate to have powerful works by a worldrenowned artist in contemporary sculpture adorning the seafront. I

was fascinated to see people pausing to consider what was before them and many a photograph was taken. FynArts is to be congratulated on having the vision to mount an exhibition of public art, something that Hermanus seriously lacks. In Stellenbosch one can go on a Dylan Lewis sculpture tour if so inclined. I sincerely hope that another exhibition will be on display on the lawns during next year’s FynArts.

Flower Festival a great success The Hermanus Botanical Society would like to thank the public for showing such great interest by supporting our recent, extremely successful Flower Festival in the Fernkloof Nature Reserve, with 2 500 people attending – a record number despite the inclement weather. It was wonderful to see families wandering through the interesting mini show gardens, with the mountain backdrop looking beautiful after the recent rains. Others visited the marquee with its displays, or were viewing the beautiful flower arrangements and wetlands display in the hall. Tea and cake was a sure winner while children were running around on the lawns, all in a relaxed and happy atmosphere.

The almost 400 flower specimens at the back of the hall, a monumental achievement, were beautifully presented and of great interest. Another great attraction outside was the placid Alpacas from Villiersdorp. Geraldine Gardiner won first prize in the raffle, a painting kindly donated by our well-known botanical artist, Margaret de Villiers. Geraldine is such a worthy winner, as she has been working in our garden every day for the last twenty years. Botsoc gratefully received donations from: Eastcliff Spar, Fruit and Veg City, The Wine Village, The Beanery, Pennypinchers, Madron Farm ,Coca-Cola Hermanus , Whale Coast Conservation and Overstrand

Municipality R5 500. The masses of beautiful flowers were received from the Gibsons’ farm Kleinmond, Nieuwedam farm, Stanford Hill farm, Berghoff farm (Piketberg), Walshacres, Ivey’s farm, Seascape and Vredehoek farm. Thank you to the landscapers and the stall holders for their participation. The kindness of the farmers is greatly appreciated as well all the planning and organisation done by Botanical Society volunteers. Botsoc, a non-profit, self-sustaining organization, raises funds to maintain our botanical garden, buildings and other Fernkloof projects.

bespreek is.

nie.

14 Hermanus Times Learn how to become a citizen scientist

Promosies Promotions

10 October, 2013

Ever wondered what exactly a citizen scientist is or how to become one? Well, Professor Les Underhill, Director of the UCT Animal Demography Unit, will be the guest speaker at the Whale Coast Conservation AGM on Thursday 17 October where he will discuss this in more detail. Professor Underhill is a statistician who uses this knowledge to analyse data collected by citizen scientists. According to Underhill, citizen science is the name given to an approach to research which has benefits for both researcher and citizen. “One of the values is to provide an understanding of the basic paradigms of scientific method to large numbers of people. In a nutshell, this involves doing what all scientists do, collecting data in a disciplined way in accordance with a well-thought through protocol,” says Underhill. The Animal Demography Unit (ADU) at UCT has been developing citizen science for more than 20 years and the benefits of the approach are

obvious. Between 1987 and 1991, the first bird atlas project collected 7 million records of bird distribution in southern Africa. Starting in 2007, the second bird atlas project has collected more than 4 million records. Citizen science enables the collection of data on an unprecedented scale. Whale Coast Conservation provides several opportunities for citizen scientists to use their time, skills, interests and modern technology to advance scientific knowledge. Frog enthusiasts can become involved in monitoring the distribution of frogs across the Overstrand. Frogs are the best indicators of the health of our highly threatened wetlands. For example, identification of frogs through sightings and photographs, recordings of their calls and presence of tadpoles to indicate breeding health, are all extremely valuable in assessing the state of the environment.

Beachcombers can add to our knowledge of the numbers and types of sharks in Walker Bay. Collecting, identifying, counting and recording shark egg cases on Overstrand beaches will help to broaden our knowledge of these threatened sea creatures. Everyone (member or not) is welcome at Whale Coast Conservation’s AGM on 17 October at 17:30 for 18:00 at the Green House to hear about WCC’s progress and to find out how to become a citizen scientist. For more information about the talk or how to get involved in a Whale Coast Conservation Citizen Science project, contact Sheraine van Wyk on 083 484 0202 or sheraine.vanwyk@ocf.org.za or Anina Lee on 028 312 4072 or anina.lee@ocf.org.za.

MOTORSHOW: EXCITING MODEL LINE UP

Toyota and Lexus at the Johannesburg International Motor Show 2013 QUICKPIC

T

he countdown has begun for the 2013 edition of the Johannesburg International Motor Show and, as in the past, South Africa’s most loved brand will be leading the way with one of the biggest stands and undoubtedly the largest presence Toyota has ever had at the show. According to Kerry Roodt, General Manager of Marketing Communications: “Toyota has produced a stand of great stylistic and architectural appeal with origami-inspired, wave design elements predominating. This follows the new global direction, making us one of the first countries to adopt it after Europe, Thailand and South America.” But, as Roodt points out, “the 1 053 m² indoor Toyota stand in Hall 6 does much more than just accommodate the vehicles; it was developed with the aim of letting visitors really feel the Toyota brand promise. Our mission through our products and our service is to bring smiles to the lives of every single customer; our stand is simply an extension of this.” This is reflected in how the 18 cars will be displayed: Hilux, Fortuner and the Toyota Imperial Racing Hilux piloted by Dakar champions, Giniel de Villiers and Dirk von Zitzewitz, will be on show in the Quality, Durability and Reliability (QDR) zone. Appropriately, this area will be reserved for locally built models and it will highlight how Toyota delivers peace of mind and trust to customers through QDR,

The FT86 Open Concept will be one of many vehicles on display at the motor show. which is a core strength of the brand. In the “waku-doki” or fun-todrive zone, models such as the 86, Aygo, FJ Cruiser and RAV4 will be featured. “A few cars we’ll still keep under wraps until show time but we can divulge that the FT-86 Open Concept – which premiered at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year – will be seen officially for the first time

on African soil. This car, which personifies fun and excitement, was created to test the water for the possible introduction of a convertible version of the globally acclaimed 86 sports coupe,” Roodt said. An exhibit that will come under the spotlight in the hybrid leadership zone is the ground-breaking TS030 Hybrid driven by Anthony Davidson, Sébastien Buemi and Stéphane Sarrazin which finished

second at this year’s gruelling 24hour Le Mans race. Together with the Toyota Imperial Racing Hilux and South Africa’s newest rally championship challenger, the Castrol Team Toyota Racing Yaris which can be viewed in the fun-todrive zone, these three models will reinforce Toyota’s glorious motorsport heritage. Moving outdoors, Toyota will likewise take a commanding lead in

the off road arena. The full range of Toyota and Lexus 4x4 vehicles will be on view, including the new Prado. The public will also have the opportunity to put selected models through their paces on both the 4x4 track as well as Toyota’s very own “Urban Trax”. The latter is a go-anywhere, set-up anywhere, versatile 4x4 demonstration and instruction track, which allows the Toyota Advanced Driving team the opportunity to display the various capabilities and functions of the Toyota range of off road vehicles, through seven man-made obstacles that mimic a rough outdoor environment, but can be experienced in an urban environment. These include the demonstration of extreme ascents, descents, cross axle articulation, side slopes, traction control, downhill assist control, crawl control, ridge crossing as well as differential lock functionality. The stand for sister brand Lexus is likewise modelled on the new global design which was first shown at Geneva. It takes its cue stylistically from the signature L-finesse design language – iridescent metallic hues combine with crisp, sharp lines to create a dramatic, uncluttered backdrop for the glittering line-up of prestige models. These include the recently minted IS attired in F-Sport apparel, the GS in hybrid 450h guise, the rare and utterly exclusive LFA supercar (as well as its F-Sport road bike sibling) and, of course, the LS flagship. A surprise new Lexus model will also be unveiled at JMS – details will be provided shortly.
