Overstrand best in West The Overstrand Municipality earned bragging rights after a study showed that on a local municipality level, most of the best performers - eight out of the top 10, were in the Western Cape, with Overstrand topping the list. Second was Stellenbosch, with Steve Tshwete (in Mpumalanga) third and Saldanha Bay fourth. Last year Saldanha took top honours, followed by Stellenbosch, and Overstrand was third. “Western Cape and Gauteng municipalities remain typically the best managed and most competitive in a year ridden with protests,” Municipal IQ said in their statement, releasing its Municipal Productivity Index (MPI) and Compliance and Governance Index (CGI). The MPI combines financial and other data to assess individu-
als’ ability to engage with local economies, how vibrant the local economy is, and how does a municipality contribute to this. The CGI focuses on how well municipalities are meeting basic planning, reporting, financial management, and capacity requirements. All in all 278 municipalities were weighed up against each other. The rest in the top 10 list of bestmanaged local municipalities are: 5. Thabazimbi (LIMPOPO). 6. Mossel Bay (WC). 7. Cape Agulhus (WC). 8. Knysna (WC). 9. Bitou (WC). 10. Drakenstein (WC). ) Municipal IQ is a web-based data and intelligence service that monitors and assesses South Africa’s municipalities. For more information, go to www.municipaliq.co.za
PROPOSED BYPASS ROAD “This road will kill the CBD. And to put it right next to a school, puts our children’s safety in danger. And then to build it through part of a wetland area is just madness.”

CCTV for Hermanus JANINE VAN DER RIET
After numerous organisations and committees spoke for eight years about installing CCTV cameras in Hermanus, Hermanus Public Protection (HPP) has taken the initiative to make this a reality. After HPP investigated different types of surveillance cameras and their effectiveness, during the past year, the first 14 cameras will now be installed as per the first phase of the project. Freddie Cronjé, chairperson of HPP, motivated their decision to HPP members on Friday at an information
meeting, as well as on Tuesday evening at their AGM in the municipal auditorium. During the first phase, 14 cameras will be erected on nine-metre poles, fitted with solar panels so that power failures will not have an effect on the 24-hour surveillance. HPP employees will be tasked with monitor duties. This R980 000 project for Phase One, financed by HPP, will include ten cameras in the CBD. The other four will be divided: One at the Sandbaai/Hemel-enAarde Road crossing; one at the entrance to Voëlklip; one at Rotary Drive; and one overlooking Fernkloof Nature Reserve.
The Overstrand Municipality indicated that they will supply two response vehicles, as well as a control room. The cliff paths in Hermanus will be Phase Two and HPP will have consultation meetings beforehand. Members at the meeting had some questions about the cameras, but after Cronjé addressed their concerns, everyone at the AGM was satisfied that the project would improve investment and tourism in Hermanus. “The goal is to change Hermanus into a zero-crime tourist destination, safe for all involved,” Cronjé said about the project, that will commence in the next few weeks.

Conceptual alignment of the proposed 3 km Hermanus CBD bypass road, starting at the intersection of Main Road and Mimosa Street, running along Mountain Drive and down Jose Burman Drive that separates the high school from the cricket sports field. Then it runs along a section of Fairways Avenue and joins Main Road at a new traffic circle east of the existing intersection of Fairways Avenue with Main Road.
Bypass off to a bumpy start JANHENDRIK COETZER Consultants from SRK Consulting and EFG Engineers were in for a rather nasty surprise when around 100 stakeholders and local residents just about had enough of the proposed plans for a CBD bypass road for Hermanus. This came after the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process started releasing background information on the proposed CBD bypass road on Monday 8 December at the Hermanus High School. While David Faure from EFG Engineers gave his presentation on what motivated such a road, everyone listened, but when members of the public were given the floor to ask questions, all hell broke loose. What was supposed to be a question and answer session soon became a school hall filled with only questions with no real answers and temperatures rising, after which Faure said, “your points are all noted and will be taken into consideration and handled by the EIA throughout the process.” One furious resident said: “This road will kill the CBD. And to put it right next to a school, puts our children’s safety in danger. And then to build it through part of a wetland area is just madness. This whole presentation and consultation is a disgrace, and I cannot believe you came all this way to provide us with such illplanned information.” According to Faure he admitted that the section by the school is still a worrying factor, but that is what the

consultation process is all about. “Nothing is paved in stone. This process is still in very early stages, but you must remember, time doesn’t stand still. We need to plan for the future. Specialists also need to be appointed as this process develops.” Most of the attendees felt that the bypass is going to be a waste of millions and they are not convinced that there is a need for one. “I don’t see a traffic problem at all. Since 2007 traffic declined on the R43 and now you are predicting an increase. It doesn’t make sense. You first have to convince me that there is a need for this bypass,” another resident said. Residents also wanted to know what about the impact on the value of properties close to the golf course and Mountain Drive. To this question Faure answered, “it’s only a proposal at this stage, so nothing is for definite. We will keep people updated.” Duncan Heard, chairperson of the Fernkloof Nature Reserve Advisory Board, said: “Sound reasoning must be provided as to why our community needs to reduce the size of a relatively small nature reserve, which is on the same scale of the importance as the Kogelberg Biosphere Nature Reserve in terms of global importance. “Why must we sacrifice the landscape character and tranquillity of our urban edge, replacing it with a noisy highway? Why must the easy public access, available for more than fifty years, to the nature reserve be cut off, and why must the country character of the high school, future
sports complex and weekend country market be destroyed by such a bypass?” Heard says that Hermanus has a limited growth potential, stuck between the mountain and the see. “To address the challenges of the future and effectively conserve our natural and cultural heritage, it requires a modern innovative approach that is not just driven by clinical engineering, town planning formulas and solutions.” A possible solution given by one of the residents was that “instead of spending millions on a new bypass, why not rather use that money to upgrade the existing relief road?” According to Stephen Müller, director of infrastructure and planning at the Overstrand Municipality, no decisions have been made as yet. “At this stage we are not sure about anything. The EIA process will tell us what we need to know and only then will we decide. “Yes, we wanted the bypass, because we want to see the CBD used by people who want to use the CBD. And Fernkloof stays the crown jewel of the municipality. The portion by the mountain side is not part of Fernkloof. It is just the section by Hoy’s Koppie.” Faure added that “If the road happens, and only if it happens, it all depends on the outcome of further studies and specialised availability. “The final EIA report is expected by mid 2015, but before then there will be plenty opportunities for further public participation and feedback sessions.”
CLLR MACOTHA RECEIVES CERTIFICATE IN LOCAL GOVERNMENT: During the Council meeting of 3 December, the Speaker, Ald Anton Coetsee congratulated cllr Vuyani Macotha who recently received a certificate in Local Government (cum laude). Coetsee said that the results obtained by Macotha indicate “that he is very dedicated and worked extremely hard to obtain this qualification”. Coetsee added that council takes pride in the achievement of its councillors, and that the message must reach the children in the previously disadvantaged communities. “We live in an open society where every person has equal rights to better themselves. When a famous Scottish writer comes to town... Ian Rankin, the Scottish thriller writer, visited bookshops in Hermanus, much to the delight of ‘bookies’ Beth Hunt (Hemingway’s) and Corinne Hendry (‘bookmark’). Beth tells of her encounter with him when he and his wife came browsing: “One of the first customers that Friday morning comes up to the counter and purchases a book about a writer’s creativity in imagining characters. ‘Do you write?’ I ask her. She tells me that it is her husband who is the writer. I’m curious. ‘What does he write?’ ‘Crime fiction,’ she replies. ‘What is his name?’ ‘Ian Rankin.’ ‘The Ian Rankin!’ I exclaim, remembering that I had recently read an exclusive interview with him published in a long out-of-print

Rankin is best known for the series of novels featuring the Edinburgh detective, Inspector John Rebus. Way back in 2002, when Ian was in his early forties, he was a
recipient of the OBE. He is undoubtedly considered one of the top British crime writers; in fact, it is said that no Scottish novelist since Sir Walter Scott has had the commercial and critical acclaim that Ian Rankin has. His brilliant craftsmanship of the who dunnit genre has placed his indelible footprint on the literary map of Scotland. With his boyish charm and engaging approach, I found him easy to talk to and in chatting, he told me he is a collector of books, particularly first editions. ‘I have so many,’ he says, ‘that the overflow gets stored in my garage which means that there is no place to park the car.’ A highlight and memorable moment was an impromptu selfie close-up encounter with the famous writer.
“Ek is verskriklik opgewonde. Ek was nog nooit oorsee nie,” sê Megan. Ek sal ook graag my honneurs wil doen.
Helen is steeds by die plaaslike drama-vereniging betrokke. Agter elke vrou . . . Dangerous sea leads to ‘dry’ unveiling JANHENDRIK COETZER When the much awaited D-day, for the unveiling of the Cape Whale Coast Hope Spot underwater plaque at the Old Harbour, arrived, the sea was deemed too dangerous to dive down. With swells measuring 3 meters on Saturday, Dr Sylvia Earle, world famous diver and marine conservationist, remarked “no one is going to die on my watch today, it is simply
too dangerous.” Much preparation and planning had preceded what was to be the main attraction of the Hope Spot day. A big screen was also erected in the Eco-Marine village tent on Market Square where visitors sat ready to follow her every move underwater, but it was not to be. Instead Earle, joined by Overstrand Mayor Nicolette Botha-Guthrie, unveiled the “on land” Hope Spot plaque, on the stone fixture be-
hind the cannons at the Old Harbour, and declared the Cape Whale Coast an official Hope Spot. Earle then spent some time visiting stalls inside the tent and agreed that the “Catchment to Coast” theme displayed in the tent was of utmost importance for the conservation and protection of the ocean “because our rivers feed our oceans and in turn our oceans feed our rivers.” There was also a busy lineup for sea-related activities aimed at youngsters. Kids enjoyed a fossil shark tooth hunt, face painting, an abalone touch tank, rock pool ex-

The day’s activities ended with a cocktail event hosted at the municipal auditorium, followed by a VIP dinner at the Harbour Rock Restaurant. On Sunday Earle had breakfast at the Great White House in Kleinbaai and then Evan Austin from African Wings whisked her away to Knysna. According to Liezl Bezuidenhout from Environmental Management at the Overstrand Municipality, a
moment of silence dawned on those standing as the plane lifted off the airstrip at Grootbos. “This tiny woman, almost 80 years old, with her humble manner, profound knowledge and love for the ocean, left us all standing in awe. How privileged we all were to meet this great custodian of our ocean. She left behind the pride of a people united through ‘hope’.” The other Hope Spots, which are also being officially launched this month include Aliwal Shoal in KwaZulu-Natal, Algoa Bay, Plettenberg Bay, Knysna and False Bay.

Molly Venter, principal at Hermanus Private Montessori School in Hermanus, retired this week. The reins will be taken over by Caronne Vermaak.

Principal Molly retires after 46 years JANINE VAN DER RIET Molly Venter, principal at Hermanus Private Montessori School, is retiring “for the last time”, after many attempts to do so previously. After 46 years of being involved in education, and three glorious years at Montessori, Molly says this time she feels satisfied with handing over her duties to Caronne Vermaak, who will take over as principal in January. Listening to Molly’s list of achievements throughout her career, one cannot help but admire her dedication and be happy that she will now become a woman of leisure and enjoy some well-deserved rest. Some of her achievements include being appointed as the first female rector at a residential FET College, being selected as the runner up in the Nedbank Business Woman of the Year for managing a college with 12 000 students, and winning Gauteng’s Business Woman of the Year competition. Molly started and is ending her working life in education as a primary school teacher, “so I feel my career has come a full circle”. Molly and hubby Johan Venter will now enjoy their golden years. Molly intends to write a book, something she has been wanting to do for many years, and will spend quality time with their three daughters and six grandchildren. “I will though truly miss all the children and staff at the school, but I will be back to visit as often as possible.” Molly has high praise for Caronne, whom she describes as one of the best. “She is highly-educated, qualified, determined and will make a success of everything. I groomed her well.” Caronne has been living in Hermanus on and off for the past seven years. She has taught at private schools in England, and worked with junior and pre-primary learners. She qualified as a Montessori educator and became head of the curriculum in 2012. Planning for 2015 has already started and between Molly and Caronne, they have held several meetings with the teachers. Caronne’s vision is for Montessori to continue to be a school of excellence. “There are many great schools in the Overstrand. We at Montessori are like a little community, with every child seen as a person, furthering morals and values, educating them to develop into phenomenal people.”

This photo of Gabi Brummer (HAWS cat volunteer and co-ordinator), Sue Taylor, Dr Sandy Waddingham and Ilze Smith (HAWS Chairperson) and Lynn Penver with little Danny on her lap was taken only a few weeks before Lynn’s death on Friday 5 December.
HAWS life president (92) dies JANINE VAN DER RIET Lynne Penver, the Life President of the Hermanus Animal Welfare Society (HAWS) passed away on Friday in the age of 92 at Huis Lettie Theron. Lynne, together with other role players, founded HAWS in 1969. A few weeks before her death, Lynne expressed her wish to visit the kennels and hold some of the kittens and cats, and on 12 November, she had the opportunity to visit the society that has been close to her heart. A friend says, after her visit, it seemed she had found peace, she was relaxed, as if she knew it was to be her last visit.
Years ago, Lynne was wellknown for her work at the HAWS charity shop and she was also a long standing member of the committee. She was also involved in fund raising and the people of Onrus will remember her as the person ‘shaking tins’ each December at Rheezicht for the Society, accompanied by Tessa, her beloved Labrador. Lynne was a trained singer, and also found time to write a very popular “chit chat” column for the Times of Hermanus for almost 20 years. Her husband, Arthur, was deputy mayor of Onrus for a time. Lynne leaves behind a son living in Cape Town and a daughter living in the UK.
Dedicated animal lover passes away Cynthia Swain 7/5/1939 - 29/11/2014 Cynthia Swain was a quiet, private person who in her youth had many interests, which she always pursued unobtrusively, never pushing herself to the fore in anything. As a teenager she became interested in naval matters and joined the Sea Rangers in Simon’s Town. She was with them for five years, leaving as an officer. At 21 she sailed to the UK to seek her fortune. This is also where she met her future husband, on the day she stepped off the ship at South hampton. Gilbert Swain had been asked by a friend to meet this young lady as she came ashore and transport her safely to London. They were married 10 years later. Around 1980 they returned to South Africa for good and settled in Cape Town, where she could at last fulfil her life-long wish of working with animals. She was immediately drawn to “The World of Birds” in Hout Bay and worked with owner and founder Walter Mangold as a volunteer for many years. In time she also became a volunteer at SANCCOB- a facility for the rehabilitation of injured and distressed sea-birds. At this time her husband Gilbert died and Cynthia decided to move to Hermanus, where her sister Jenny and brother-in-law Allan were already living. Here she did not lose her interest in sea birds and for many years she
was go-between in the transport of oil-soaked penguins from Dyer Island. These birds were transported to Hermanus to Cynthia, who would drive them at her own expense to the next handler in Somerset West, who would then transport the birds to their final destination at the SANCCOB headquarters in Milnerton, Cape Town Sometimes the birds from Dyer Island would arrive in Hermanus late in the afternoon; Cynthia could not accommodate them for the night in her small cottage at Kidbrooke, so they would sleep in Jenny and Allan’s garage in Fisherhaven, with each bewildered penguin patiently waiting in its own box. Overnighters would be forcefed electrolyte solution so that they Cynthia Swain would not dehydrate on their journey to Milnerton the next day. The process of treating each patient was accompanied by squawking and honking in the garage every night. In time, Cynthia had to hand this task over to others, as she found the journeys to Somerset West and back too tiring and expensive. Meanwhile, she had joined the Hermanus Animal Welfare Society as a volunteer and this is where she became deeply involved. Not
having been allowed to keep a dog or cat of her own as a child, she could now express her abiding love for them in every possible way. She offered her services wholeheartedly and was totally committed to manning the Animal Welfare shop in town most Fridays, or filling in on days when other helpers were unable to. She spent hours with the cats at the kennels and walked the dogs too, until this became too taxing as well. Cynthia served on the HAWS committee for quite some time and was also appointed treasurer. She volunteered to help the vets with the “spayathons” in the townships and right up to a few months ago, spent hours distributing and collecting the Animal Welfare charity boxes from the various supermarkets and other venues where they had been placed. Cynthia developed cancer in 2013, was treated successfully and was in remission until two months ago when the cancer returned. She underwent chemotherapy but deteriorated markedly until she passed away on 29 November. Cynthia leaves her sister Jenny, brother-in-law Allen and nephew and godson, Rory. – JENNY MACKAY

What's new this month? The Drop Off is South Africa's first ever online personal grocery service and it opens for business this December.

With very little effort customers can use their phones to pick and choose their favourite groceries before submitting an online order that will arrive in just 24 hours. The new venture is expected to appeal to holiday makers and locals desperate to avoid the chaos and queues of the peak season. By employing professional shoppers to deliver groceries throughout some of South Africa's most frequented holiday towns, the goal is to deliver top-quality service in Plettenberg Bay, St Francis and Hermanus. Owner of the company, Christopher Ball, explains that the idea for the company came from wanting to give their customers more time on the beach and less time in the shops this festive season. So, for anyone wanting to make the most of their summer, sign up at www.thedropoff.co.za or have a look at the Facebook page for more information.

NIGHT OF 1000 DRAWINGS: There may have been a power outage on Friday late afternoon, but there was no stopping the surge of art lovers (and gallery owners) who descended onto the galleries in the CBD looking to buy an A5 artwork or three, as part of the charity driven Night of 1000 Drawings initiave, hosted on the First Fridays Art Walk. Seen here browsing is Tyrone Selmon (Art Eye) and Sonja Basoc. PHOTOS: CILENE BEKKER

Bernd and Andrea Seidel (Voëlklip swallows from Germany) browsing at the Abalone art gallery, with Isabel Mulder (gallery owner Ortrud’s daughter) showing some of the artworks. The Night of 1000 Drawings was dubbed a wonderful initiative, not only for a good cause - the donation of proceeds to three charities, but also as a fun night out in the CBD. “It also gives unknown artists an opportunity for exposure,” commented Mulder. Drawings ranged from collectors pieces from local artists at one end to cute kiddie drawings that ouma and oupa lovingly paid R100 for.

Place in the sun for all? EDITORIAL COMMENT Proudly Hermanus The recent public participation meeting about the proposed plan for the bypass road had residents in an uproar last seen at the meeting about upgrades at Grotto Beach. And even further back, the Station Square developments... So often one hears complaints that there isn’t enough involvement from the commu nity, that not enough people pitch up or support events, but if there are issues that tug at their heart strings, it’s a whole differ ent kettle of fish. Propose something that would drastical ly change the character/heart of Herma nus, and you have a community that stands together. As happened at the bypass meet ing on Monday evening when those who attended united in their opposition. Saying prove first why it is needed, and then we will consider the pros and cons. The consulting team soon ran out of an swers, and realised their proposal needs to be taken back to the drawing board. Hermanus residents are a force to be reckoned with. And so is our municipality, topping the Municipal IQ list!
SAPS is tops During the weekend of 11 November, various items were stolen out of a tool shed on a farm outside Stanford. A week later Warrant Officer Frans from Caledon SAPS stopped a suspicious-looking driver in a vehicle in Caledon and found a generator in the possession of the driver. He asked the driver where he got the generator from, but the driver could not answer. The generator was taken away by SAPS. Frans then linked up with WO Carl De Does and his task team from Hermanus. The task team went to Stanford to the home of the suspect, where they also recovered a brand-new stolen weed eater. After further investigation, they arrested three more suspects from Stanford and also recovered a 14 kg bottle of cooking gas. I would like to take this opportunity to thank SAPS, especially WO Frans, De Does and his task team, as well as Captain Nel from Hermanus SAPS. This was definitely a team effort from SAPS. I found the police officers in the Hermanus charge office to be very competent and helpful.

Medals should be earned The present Police Commissioner, Riah Phiyega, who has only been in the Police Force two years, was seen at a recent parade illegitimately wearing four Police medals. This is now the third top cop in a row to have abused their position, and disgraced the good name of the SAPS. The four medals seen on her tunic were: – The first being a 10-year Commemoration Award, but she has only had two years service in the Police Force. – The second a Gold Medal for Outstanding Service. With crime rates on the rise, Marikana, police brutality, mall robberies escalating out of control, many of convicted criminals in the SAPS ranks, corruption, bribery and many other issues still outstanding, one is hard pressed to establish which excellent service she has rendered. – The third the Soccer World Cup 2010 Support Award Medal. It is incredible that she was able to earn this award given that the World Cup took place a full two years before the Commissioner even joined the police. Any responsible person would be embarrassed with such an obvious display. – The fourth medal was for the 11 police agencies that were amalgamated into one in 1994. This is extremely well done given that this, too, far preceded her time at the SAPS by 18 years. This type of honour bestowing shows a total disregard for the value placed on the awarding of medals. How can anyone have respect for a Police Force whose top echelon act like leaders in a banana republic law enforcement agency? The Commissioner never served in the
Police Force until she was appointed two years ago. What faith can the public have in the SAPS when they observe this total lack of decorum in the top structure? How must dedicated professional policemen and women who have made of the Police Service a career and vocation, feel when their seniors act in such an irresponsible way, and how can they have pride in their uniforms and careers? What must policemen think and feel who have in the course of duty, put their lives on the line to protect the public and have legitimately been honoured by Police medals, that have now been devalued by the commissioner’s behaviour? Thank goodness there are still a group of professional and dedicated policemen and women whose creed is to “Serve and Protect” and who believe in upholding the law. We in Hermanus are extremely lucky to have one such policeman in Lt.-Colonel Francois de Wet, acting Station Commander, who has loyal, efficient and dedicated police under his command, and who has maintained his enthusiasm and dedication, despite having been overlooked for the Station Commander’s position for twelve years. During that time he has had to take on the acting role each time after six new appointees, who held the position of Station Commissioner, left during this period. I recall a similar incident where the newly politically appointed Commanding Officer of the Natal Regiment stole medals from the museum and wore them on his uniform. What are the senior people in our security forces coming to?

Overstrand municipal officials serve residents well It came to me as no surprise that the Overstrand Municipality has recently been rated one of two best run municipalities in the Western Cape, as we who live here see ongoing evidence of their commitment and competence. As a resident and ratepayer, I wish to thank the executive mayor and her staff, as well as the municipal manager and his staff, for their dedication, drive and sense of direction, and their determination to get the job done, and done well. The affairs and the development of the Overstrand are in capable hands – and it is our duty to be not only supportive, but also actively involved. One of the ways residents could become actively involved, would be to participate in the large scale project to revitalise the Hermanus CBD, which has become of vital importance if we wish for it to remain the social and economic heart of our town. In response to the request
for ideas to ensure this, I would like to propose that the existing taxi rank be relocated to the industrialarea.Theideamaysoundfarfetched, but warrants a reassessment of the purpose and present location of this necessary facility, which mainly serves the inhabitants of Mount Pleasant, Zwelihle and Hawston, and mainly in their need to get to and from their places of employment. The present taxi rank serves as the main base, from where the taxi industry operates an extensive transport network to and from all the areas that make up the Overstrand. Surely such a base need not be in the heart of town, and may even serve the Mount Pleasant, Zwelihle and Hawston residents better if it’s located closer to the residential areas and closer to the industrial area, where many of them are employed.
THEO DE WET HERMANUS
The Market Traders Association is distressed about the prejudice displayed towards their place of livelihoods by the 50 or so residents who attended the CBD revitalisation meeting on 27 November. The sentiments below were discussed at a meeting of their committee held during the power outage on Monday. Market Square is and has probably always been the true hub of Hermanus. Historically as a source of income for poor fishing families and the initial place of the development of the micro-revenue, for the historical fishing village. From simple corrugated iron-roofed shelters for selling fish and later fresh fruit and veg from farms, right up to the 1980s they were there selling their wares off the back of wellworn farm trucks and bakkies. As time passed and the community grew, the sale of shoes (and sold there by the cobbler) and cloth continued into the 90s! “Hukbuk” the cobbler and Bruce van der Spuy (of then Fishermans Cottage), with his clothes from exotic places in South America, traded his colourful hippy style clothes and sarongs under the market’s afdak on a Saturday morning. When Bruce conceived the life-changing Whale Festival, life changed forever. So the area evolved as others arrived with previously unavailable wares and clothing from Greenmarket Square in Cape Town. After 1994, when trade with the rest of Africa was permitted, the market experienced a shift in the style of goods available to the public and growing international tourist industry. Hermanus had a delightful flea market of colourful gazebos and umbrellas, and a mix of traders giving a very African character, that has drawn tourists local and from far and wide to our Hermanus shores year round. The need arose in time with the flea market bursting at the seams to create a market style structure to accommodate the traders. With proposals by Gapp Architects, and the late Ivor Prinsloo, a blueprint for the redevelopment of Market Square was designed. A local architect (and member of the Heritage Committee) was appointed to design a building in keeping with the market square and adjacent Fisherman’s Village on the only remaining municipal site, the FNB parking site. So the red sheds were created in keeping with the “trading outside” paradigm, as at Cape Town’s waterfront. The red sheds have made a huge contribution to tourism in Hermanus, provided revenue to the municipal coffers and created jobs for locals. We can be proud that these traders from Africa are very much part of the microcosm of Hermanus. There must be a place in the Hermanus sun for all!
MARKET TRADERS ASSOCIATION
A tribute to Albert Labo With reference to the article in last week’s HT about Albert Labo who died from his injuries sustained after an accident, in Sandbaai: Albert was my gardener, my cousin’s gardener and my neighbour’s gardener. He was tragically killed on Monday 1 December whilst cycling on his way to work for me. Knocked off his bike after being hit by a car. Albert was a kind, happy, lovely man, only 34 years old. He was a hard, honest, reliable and trustworthy worker. He leaves behind his wife, Memory, and two young sons. Albert was from Zimbabwe and his wife is now trying to get funds together to send him home for burial, as is their cultural belief. Who is going to provide for his young family now? Albert was going home for Christmas to visit his mother whom he had not seen for six years. Albert will be going home, but to be laid to rest. R.I.P. Albert, we will all miss you very much.

Wie pas triagestelsel in provinsiale hospitale toe? Hoekom moes pasiënte so lank wag of is daar nie genoeg dokters nie?
7. Hoekom is dié tipe ondervinding van pasiënte by alle provinsiale hospitale dieselfde.
Development is inevitable, people must move with the times Years back I recall seeing grown men and maybe women fearlessly throwing themselves in front of Whitey Basson’s mighty bulldozers in an effort to thwart the building of the dreaded Checkers centre. bargains and “humble pie” which they should eat with much “relish”. Judging by how always full the two hour free undercover parking is at Checkers, I suspect there are quite a few left, and guess what, some of them are probably strolling over to their other pet hate, Woollies because it is also nearly never empty.
So, just as the Khoisan must have been pretty peeved in 1652 when Jan van Riebeeck rocked up on the foreshore (V&A Waterfront now) and started all his dreadful development, so the village needs to move on.
The Overstrand will miss the worst of the cold front, currently heading over the country. A sunny Saturday is expected, with the weather turning colder at night. Sunday will be cloudy and mild with a maximum of 20 °C.
12 HermanusTimes Negesteraftreeoord in Onrus amptelik geopen 11 December, 2014

DONATION: Feathers Bistro at the Hemelen-Aarde Village donated half of their highly successful 5 December bingo evening ticket sales to HAWS. Feathers was also the venue where volunteers from HAWS enjoyed their year-end tea function the day after, where owner Carolyn Flynn, handed the cheque over to HAWS committee member Sylvana Doran.
CHRISTMAS FOR THE ANIMALS: It is that time of year again when people can take their entire family to go and see the Merry Christmas house at 12 Krintang Crescent in Vermont – all for a good cause. People are invited to leave donations in the post box at the house, which will be donated to the Hermanus Animal Welfare Society. HAWS volunteers at the function included Ria Hartman, Marie Lucas, Hettie Roux and Edna du Plessis. Marie and Edna (both 82) are two of the longest serving volunteers. They’ve worked in the HAWS shop for the past 14 years.
BIRDLIFE OVERBERG DONATES TO DICT AND BLSA: A highlight at BirdLife Overberg’s yearend function on Saturday evening was the donation the club made to the Dyer Island Conservation Trust (DICT) and the Western Cape conservation division of BirdLife South Africa (BLSA). Each of the beneficiaries received R30 000. The DICT donation will be in aid of the development of an African Penguin and Seabirds rehabilitation centre in Kleinbaai. The funds were raised through an internal club fundraising campaign. The BLSA donation will be used as seeding funding for the proposed Hottentot Buttonquail research project and a national fundraising campaign for this bird will be launched in 2015. BirdLife Overberg chairman Anton Odendal is here with recipients Wilfred Chivell and Dale Wright.

Mathews remembered the first chairman of the Overstrand Hospice, Jeremy Owen, who passed away recently, during the draw. Owen started the Hospice in 2006/2007, and Mathews followed him as chairman. His memorial service was held on Tuesday. “I would also like to thank everyone for the huge support they have shown to Hospice over the year, especially the more than 120 volunteers,” said Mathews. Doing this month’s draw is Elaine du Preez (from Don Adams Auditors), the new professional nurse at the Overstrand Hospice, Sister Annetjie Squires, Mark Kumleben and Mike Mathews. This month’s winners are Mafia Bridge Group (R5 000), Drs Abel and Muller (R2 500) and Suzanne Rautenbach (R1 000). The next draw is in January. PHOTO: ELBÉ VAN HEERDEN
TRIBUTE TO ELVIS: A special event organised by Flight Specials Hermanus and performed by singer, actor and entertainer Matt Stern, titled Hound Dog - a Tribute to the Life and Music of Elvis, was held on Friday 5 December at the Sandbaai Hall. Although it wasn’t a fully packed hall, “Elvis” didn’t leave the building and most certainly didn’t fail to entertain both young and old.

The Giovannetti family opened the doors to their new Hermanus Don Gelato shop in Main Road to a selected few friends and family on Friday for a pre-tasting. The only “invited” guest that didn’t pitch up to the party was Eskom. A power outage meant no lights, no music, and more importantly, no ice cream. “We cannot decant and display our ice creams!” said an excited but slightly frantic Corrado Giovannetti when guests started arriving. “I cannot serve you milkshakes!” Fortunately, power was restored half an hour later, so the ice cream could be decanted and displayed, and guests were treated to mini scoops of the unique flavours of ice cream that Don Gelato’s is famed for. Favourite flavours among the lucky few who could indulge and try as many ice creams as they liked, included the Mojito –a traditional Cuban cocktail made from white rum, sugar, lime juice, sparkling water, and mint. “It tastes 100% like the real thing,” was the general comment. Other flavours scooped up were chilli chocolate; Stracciatella (vanilla ice cream with chocolate streaks); and the Italian flag tri-colour – a scoop each of tomato, Gruyère and a basil and mint combination. All the ingredients used are fresh produce and locally sourced, like the Gruyère from Klein River and the mint from a farm 50 km outside Stanford. This family-run business, run by Lionello, his girlfriend Elena Filippini and his parents Corrado and Grazia Giovannetti, started in Stanford, with their successful parlour attracting tourists and residents alike. With the shop now open in Hermanus, more people can enjoy a second or third helping, in the company of the charming Italian family. Their festive season flavours includes a Prosecco (Italian sparkling white wine) ice cream.

Berries, bees and boerewors What could be tastier than a ripe, juicy raspberry fresh from the cane or a darkhued blueberry picked from the bush? Fifty Grade 1 learners from Hermanus Primary School had the chance to find this out when they recently spent a special morning at Haygrove Heaven farm in the Hemel-enAarde-Valley. After a short presentation by Sean Tager, managing director at Haygrove,
about the different types of berries and how they are grown; children, teachers and parents had the opportunity to pick (and eat!) their own raspberries, learn about the importance of bees and pollination, taste some honey and take a tractor ride around the farm. Afterwards everyone enjoyedboerewors rolls, and much to the delight of the tiny tots, Father Christmas arrived on his red quad bike bearing gifts and ice cream.

21 Warning! Pretty alien on the loose HermanusTimes

The wall in Rocklands Road after the accident.
Hit and run by driving school leaves a sour taste ELBÉ VAN HEERDEN A resident of Rocklands Road was highly distressed after a learner driver crashed into his boundary wall, damaging around 12 metres of stone fence. Klaus Gautier sent a letter to the driving school, stating that he had evidence that one of their vehicles had caused the damage, but they did not inform the Gautiers of the incident. “In fact they have done the opposite, by making extensive efforts to clean up any evidence of their involvement. Only small fragments of the vehicle could be found.” Gautier was not at home when the incident happened and was informed of it by ADT. He has since reported the accident
to the Hermanus police. “It is totally unacceptable that a driving school training learners in this country, sets this type of behavioural standard,” said Gautier. Because of the damaged wall, the lack of security led to four steel chairs being stolen from their garden. Gautier visited the company’s head office where he spoke to the owner’s wife about the incident. He then received a voice message from the owner saying there was nothing they could do as the matter has been referred to their insurance company. “Meanwhile, the wall has been fixed. My insurance company confirms that they are in contact with the driving school’s insurance company.”
The Hermanus public is warned to be on the lookout for a showy plant with yellow blooms now flowering in profusion in many parts of Hermanus, along the road to Stanford, up the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley and especially from Lynx Road to Hawston. According to the Hermanus Botanical Society and Hermanus Hacking Group the plant should be removed and destroyed, or it will dramatically invade fynbos areas. The plant is of the daisy (Asteraceae) family, with the common name “ragwort” and scientific name Senecio pterophorus. In Afrikaans it is called the “perdegifbossie” (being poisonous to both vertebrate and invertebrate browsers). The plant is tall, about 80 to 250 cm and flowers between November and March. It is native to the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal but naturalised along the Garden Route. The yellow flower-heads have obvious “petals” (i.e. ray florets), usually enclosed in 18-22 bracts, and are borne in large spreading clusters. Numerous fluffy seeds are produced and are dispersed by wind.Seeds are formed from approximately mid-November and thereafter. The Botanical Society and hacking group
The Senecio pterophorus, an invasive alien plant, that holds a serious threat to the local fynbos.
suggest that an aggressive approach be followed to get rid of this radically invasive alien. It is not advised to snip off the flowers and leave them on the soil as a method of containing them, as the flowers go to seed, that is then dispersed in this way. There has been intense debate about how to dispose of the Senecio pterophorus plants so as to eliminate the possibility of the seed spreading aggressively. Frank Matthee, a member of the Hermanus Hacking Group, gathered the information, while from the municipal side Johan van Taak and Francois Pretorius, in collaboration with Lauren Rainbird of the municipal environmental department, described the how-to: ) Place plants for disposal in black refuse bags, as the heat generated in them will breakdown the plant material and kill the seeds. ) Do not dispose of this plant material in the usual garden refuse pile. Instead, drive the bags to the Transfer Station off Swartdam road, turn left and go to the kiosk. After the kiosk, turn right up a small hill. ) Drive into the shed and reverse to the cement troughs where the plants in black bags can be thrown. ) The bags will be buried at the Gansbaai landfill site, avoiding any chance of seeds germinating. - CHARLYN VOSLOO (chairperson, Hermanus Hacking Group) and DIANNE MARAIS (chairperson of Hermanus Botanical Society)

26 HermanusTimes Hawston Seefees lok duisende
Nuus News
11 December, 2014
FREE PARKING: A resident in Mitchell Street, Eastcliff says their quiet little road has become an extra car park for those unwilling to pay the due parking fees, all of 10 metres away. “While Checkers offers two hours of free parking, there are those who prefer to cause a nuisance by blocking entrances to houses. Some of these are those working at shops, businesses and restaurants locally. I propose that the Overstrand Municipality extend the parking bays and employ wardens to collect fees in Mitchell Street. PHOTO: JUDITH CALDER

SANTA BRINGS SMILES TO CAMPHILL: A group of learners from Hermanus High School collected over 60 Santa Shoeboxes to hand out to the learners of Camphill School. As their wish lists contained special items, the list was handled by Hermanus High School learners (from Interact and the junior town council) who helped hand out the gifts. Each child received a Santa Shoebox filled with goodies.

Visser vertel grappenderwys hoekom hy so mededeelsaam is. “Ag jong, ek is mos nou single, so ek kuier maar vanoggend heerlik saam met hierdie klomp mooi vrouens. Ek maak eintlik net stock bymekaar.
Northcliff wins prizes with TechnoBoffin project At the beginning of 2014, Estelle Goosen, a computer applied technology (CAT) curriculum advisor, started a project called Techno-Boffin. The project involved all CAT learners in the Overberg area. These learners then wrote a Techno-Boffin test and those marks were added to their term marks. This process was repeated in term 2 and 3. NATURE MATTERS: Did you know... The Cape golden mole (Chrysochloris asiatica) is found in the South-Western Cape, often seen burrowing just below the ground, giving them the common name of “kruipmolletjie”. Golden moles are not related to mole-rats and are much smaller. Golden moles have small pointed teeth, typical of insectivores and eat soft-bodied insects like grubs, which can often be garden pests and are most abundant in the roots and stems of plants just below the soil surface. They also aerate the soil and allow water and nutrients to move through it. A gardener’s friend!

– K. DU TOIT
Three teams from the Hermanus Tennis Club took part in the South Boland league that takes place from September until late November. The first women’s team won the Albert van Reenen league (second division, with a pool of eight teams). The team consisted of Maretha Sauer (played four matches), Yolande Hansen (4), Carien Gooding (3), Danny Grib (4), Nicolene van der Merwe (2), Amore Hansen (2), Jeanne Vercuiel (1), Barbara Stocks (1), Louise Coetzee (1) and Kerry Tindall (1). The team won five out of seven ties, narrowly losing in the other two, both ending in a close score of 3-2. The margins would have been even bigger as there were four bonus points up for grabs when winning a tie. The second women’s team were also victorious in the Connie Roux Wednesday morning league. The team won all their matches, losing only one set along the
way, to finish first in the league, winning 32 sets. Unfortunately, their main rivals withdrew before the league started and there were only three teams left in the competition. The team included Lyn Bouchier (two matches), Betty Moore (3), Douwien Kleinloog (3), Barbara Stocks (3), Louise Coetzee (3) and Kerry Tindall (1). The Hermanus men’s team finished fourth out of eight teams in the fourth division with 61 points, behind the winners Bottelary (75), Rekreasie (73) and Wellington (66). The men played very well winning four out of seven ties also narrowly losing the others (3-2 in matches on every occasion). Henk Olivier, Stephen Hansen, Carl de Clercq, Francois Barnard, Shaun Smith, Rudo Erasmus, Rusty Clement, Nardo Theron, Morne Potgieter, David Saunders, John Cowan and Dave Shreeve represented Hermanus in the league. – CARIEN GOODING
