HAWSTON: SEEFEES EINDIG TRAGIES
Drie seuns steeds in see vermis JANINE VAN DER RIET

Sabit Khobwe had only arrived in Hermanus a few weeks ago and was employed as a labourer. According to Vogelgat’s warden, Giorgio Lombardi, they were busy with repair work on the bridges in the kloof, which had been damaged by heavy rains and recent flooding. While Giorgio and another labourer were working on the bridge close to the main waterfall, Sabit was working nearby, cutting wood to be used as rungs for a ladder. “The next thing the labourer shouted at me that Sabit was lying on the ground,” says Giorgio. “My immediate reaction was that it might have been heat stroke, so I filled my broad-rimmed hat and splashed water over him, but there was no reaction.” Giorgio says they turned Sabit over and he tried to resuscitate him, but Sabit had no pulse and no chest movement was visible. “I scurried along the flood-strewn debris
to my office from where I called Overberg Fire and Rescue and reported a possible heart attack,” says Giorgio. Ambulance and emergency services were dispatched and a helicopter arrived shortly. In spite of strong winds, the pilot managed to drop a paramedic at the scene in the ravine to determine Sabit’s medical condition. He confirmed that Sabit was dead. The likely cause of death was a berry aneurysm. Giorgio is full of praise for Reinhard Geldenhuys, Overberg disaster manager, and all the dedicated rescue workers. “As a Muslim, Sabit had to be buried before sunset and although there are a few mosques in our area, there are no burial grounds, so we had to transport the body to the Strand,” explains Giorgio. “The elders and priests of the mosques welcomed us with grace and gentle concern for Sabit and his family. I would like to thank them for the way they took care of us all.” Sabit leaves behind his wife and two young children in Malawi.

Bees scare you? Call the bee man CILENE BEKKER On Saturday a huge swarm of bees settled on a flower pot; on Monday a family of wild geese traipsed by – nobody knows what kind or number of ‘wild life’ may flock to their neighbourhood next, says Sandbaai resident Kurt Mullner. The geese were adorable, less so the swarm
of bees that started homing in towards late afternoon on Saturday. “From the front door we saw what looked like little insects flying around, but then noticed the swarm collecting on the pot plant,” says Mullner. Local bee man Wessel Beukes was contacted and he set about scooping the bees gently into a wooden box and took them away to be released in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. “This was a moderately-sized swarm; big-
ger swarms can have up to 50 000 bees,” says Beukes. “This one I would estimate at 30 000.” Beukes, who is a bee hobbyist/farmer, can be contacted on 076 832 4719. “I encourage people to not harm or kill bees, but rather to phone me and I will come out to remove them. Bees are a crucial part of life. It’s a fact that almost 70% of all the crops that provide 90% of human food are pollinated by bees.”
Computer scam warning HEDDA MITTNER Two readers have contacted the Hermanus Times to warn the public of a computer scam that is doing the rounds. Avril Boud from Stanford says the scammers seem to target older people who may not be as techno-savvy and are more vulnerable to being tricked. “I don’t even have a computer,” says Avril, “but I immediately knew something was up.” She received three similar telephone calls over a two-week period. According to Avril, the person who called told her that he was phoning from Windows because they had picked up that something was wrong with her computer. “I just played along,” says Avril, “and asked them what I should do. I was told to press this button and that, which I pretended to do.” A little while later the same person called again to tell Avril they could see she hadn’t followed their instructions. She says he became very abusive over the phone. “You are bullsh#@!* me,” he said, to which Avril replied: “And so are you.” Another reader, Don Adams from Hermanus, also received a phone call and was told that there is a problem with his Windows licence. The person requested Don to follow his instructions, but he became suspicious and just shut off his computer. Kyle Steenkamp from Maxitec Internet Services in Hermanus says there was a similar scam in Hermanus at the end of 2011. “It is a person with a strong Indian accent who calls random landline numbers and says he is from Microsoft. “The story he tells people is that there is a Windows security issue and he prompts them to open Windows Events Calendar.” That, according to Kyle, is the warning signal, as this enables the scammer to log into your computer and create fake pop-up error messages. Victims are then assured that the problem can be fixed if they pay a certain amount of money in dollars. “It’s a global scam and not limited to South Africa” says Kyle. The public is warned to not follow any prompts and to end any dubious call immediately.
WHAT A WIPE-OUT! Nathan Gernetzky and a few surfer friends recently went to Bayview to surf its giant waves. “It is the worst wipeout I’ve ever had, as one can see from the photo.” Nathan used to be one of the pastors of Live The Life Church in Hermanus and admitted to saying a few prayers during the wipeout.

‘Ek gaan jou vrekmaak,’ het hy vir my gesê.”

“Ag twak man,” sê De Kock. Hy sê: “In Ella Gordon se tyd was dit ’n mooi plaas.

Motorcyclist knocks over young boy KERRY VAN RENSBURG An eight year old boy was knocked over by a motorcyclist in Zwelihle on Friday 6 December just after 14:00. The boy, Wongalethu Joy Shumane, is the son of Zandile Shumane, the admin clerk at Qhayiya Secondary School. The incident happened on the corner of Mamsukwini Road and Hlobo Avenue – where Qhayiya is situated – in front of Dr Khwezi Matoti’s surgery. Three police vehicles arrived on the scene and police officers blocked off the road while paramedics attended to Wongalethu. According to Wellington Nka-
nunu, caretaker at Qhayiya Secondary, he watched the motorcyclist speeding up the road and when he came back down the road he was still speeding. He heard the impact when the motorbike collided with the boy. Wongalethu was taken to Mediclinic Hermanus where, according to his mother, he underwent an operation for a fractured leg on Friday evening. A cut on his head was also stitched. He was discharged from the hospital on Wednesday morning. Lieutenant Fadila September, spokesperson for the Hermanus police, says the motorcyclist was arrested and a case of reckless and negligent driving was opened.

Kleinmond Stasiekommissaris, Kaptein Marthinus.
Enige voorvalle of noodsituasies kan ten alle tye gerapporteer word by die Overstrand Beheerkamer by 028 313 8111.

Madiba’s ‘vibe’ lives on KERRY VAN RENSBURG Maeve Dewar is a South African artist who has lived in Hermanus for almost 20 years. Her home and studio is situated high on a hill in Vermont. She says she is a bit of hermit, as she prefers being alone, living in quiet and peace and completely immersed in her work. Researching, painting and creating awareness of the beauty and significance of trees and ancient forests has become her passion and way of giving something back to future generations. However, a journey which began ten weeks ago, has changed Dewar’s life in an unexpected way. Dewar says she received a private commission from clients in Cape Town for a painting of Tata Madiba. “My brief was: it must be 1 x 1 metre, and ‘we want to feel his vibe’,” she explains. “I was stunned. Can you imagine painting the most famous man on earth?” she asks. “This was surely one of the big-
gest challenges I have had as an artist, because I did not train as a portrait painter. It was surely also one of the most incredible journeys I have ever had, and it took over two and a half months to complete.” The medium Dewar used for her Tata Madiba painting is oil. She describes the process as both agony and ecstasy. She researched her subject thoroughly and says she did not want Mandela’s teeth or his shirts. “I wanted his inside, his essence.” On completing the painting, Dewar made an appointment for the final handing over, but twice the arrangement was cancelled and rescheduled over the next three weeks. “Life is weird and wonderful, because finally, when we arrived at the agreed date, which was 5 December, I handed the painting of Madiba over at 18:30 that evening,” explains Dewar. “Literally a few hours later I heard the sad news that Tata Madiba had passed away.” She says suddenly the painting
took on a new significance both for herself as the artist and for the clients. “I believe in that synchronicity.” Dewar says her clients, who have bought her work before, “were over the moon” about the portrait. “What an honour for me and a great privilege to experience this journey with Tata,” says Dewar. “Every day I would greet him in the morning when I went into my studio and we would talk all day long as I went through the process of trying to capture the beauty of this wonderful soul.” Dewar who has been a professional artist for 40 years, says on her website: “If I could reach and soften each and every soul whose eyes and hearts glance at my work and also create an awareness of things unseen, a mindfulness of all of life, I will have achieved my life’s work and purpose.” She says: “The vibe of Tata is on the walls of my studio forever but I know I will never again have this incredible and magical experience.”

EDITORIAL COMMENT PSYCHEDELIC SUNSET: This beautiful sunset over the weekend was captured by Onrus Manor resident Jea nette Kotze, who found the perfect spot behind a con trasting green bush. “It was around 19:00 on Saturday when I took the photo. When I saw the sky it reminded me of my father saying: ‘Look up, and enjoy the greatness of God’. The whole sky was this beautiful colour and in the west, the sun was just disappearing.”
A time to mourn and a time to celebrate Saying goodbye to Nelson Mandela is proving to be quite difficult. Although we knew his end was near, the announcement of his death on 5 December brought every South African to a collective standstill. For a moment we held our breath and realised it was the news we were silently dreading. Madiba’s death has grabbed headlines and platforms around the world and there has been unprecedented mourning for a man who touched everyone, even ordinary people who had never met him personally. But the impact of his life and death has had a profound affect on all of us. And perhaps in this week of introspection we may have only just started to realise just how much our lives have been affected by this great man. The broadcasts of tributes to Mandela have made us focus on why the world loved him, and why the whole world showed up to say farewell to him. Also, why the tears flow quietly when sorrow and a sense of loss overwhelm us. And yet, the lingering image of Madiba is of him with an ever-smiling face; a radiant and positive attitude, and a kind and gracious demeanour. He led by example and now it’s up to each of us to follow in his footsteps. Let’s honour him. Let’s emulate him. And let’s celebrate all that he stood for.
Sandbaai sewage running down the street We live in Sandbaai. On the corner of Jan van Riebeeck and Long Streets, Sandbaai there is a big sewerage drain on the side of the road. A few months ago this whole drain and all its pipes were dug up and replaced. I don’t know what the problem was, but they worked there for a long time. Now there is sewage running out of this drain into the gutter and down the road for a block. (This is the end of Long Street at the coast.) It smells terrible and we have reported it to the municipality on several occasions but they just say they are aware of it. We have even reported it to Ben Solomon, who has been to look at it, but so far nothing has been solved. These are the worst kind of germs that I know of and so far this problem hasn’t been solved. The holiday season will start soon and lots of people walk down Long Street to the beach.
HUMAN, SANDBAAI.

Jy is of was lief vir hom/ haar. Die ergste was seker daardie aanhoudende verlammende vrees of hy gaan dronk of nugter wees as hy by die huis kom. Mense sê so maklik
Sluit aan by ’n enkelouer-vereniging. Raak betrokke by jou kerk of ander plek van aanbidding. Alle eer kom die Here toe. Hy sal jou ook help. Glo net! ANONIEM
This is the true SOFCA With reference to the letter from Jean Morton published in last week’s paper: I am disappointed, if not annoyed, at the letter from her regarding the treatment of her cousin at the frail-care centre of SOFCA. I have been associated with this establishment for over 12 years on a voluntary basis. My late brother-in-law was there for four years and the family were very impressed with his care. He was an intellectual and was treated with utmost respect. He was left partly paralysed by a stroke and had to be lifted up at all times, but never a bruise or a scratch. The director and staff and Matron Maartens are of the highest calibre and a number of the carers have been with SOFCA for over 20 years. Regarding the Alzheimer’s patients, they are not accommodated in their own area, and mix freely. I feel the writer of this letter did not familiarise herself with the true SOFCA.

) Daar was nooit ’n vlag by Hermanus se ingang
) Just heard the news that Madiba has passed on. The world mourns a great man who has left behind a gift of peace and freedom to his people. Let us honour him by keeping this gift safe. – EBEN MEYER, FISHERHAVEN ) According to the municipality’s website this sea son’s Overstrand holiday programme takes place in Gansbaai, Stanford, Hangklip and Kleinmond. Not much in Hermanus. ) One week of “noise” at Grotto Beach has been the best thing for Hermanus because it shows that the town is growing and not dying as some moan ers would want it to. Well done, Alan and Jasmine. ) Well done, Alan and Jasmine, for arranging the Hermanus Vac. Great to have so many young people in town. My own son and his friends can celled their Plett stay when they heard of Hermanus Vac. They’re having just as much fun right here at half the price and I trust our clubs and police here in town do even more to keep everyone safe. – SARIE NEL ) Lt. Fadila September, will you be so kind as to publish the outcome of the investigation of police members who use state vehicles for private use? We, the public, would like to know. ) I have just read in Die Burger what six matrics say they are going to do while in Plett. “Ons gaan drink.” Sorry, I am just a sour old lady who has other values and taught my kids to be responsible and celebrate in a different way. ) Het Voëlklip nou ’n dump yard geword? Jy sien net rommel waar jy kyk. – ANDRE ) I just want to know why people are still walking/ running on the cliff paths with no leashes on their dogs, especially big dogs? Can’t they read? – L, VERMONT
– RUDI ) HAWS needs to learn a few lessons in public relations. People who support them hugely get the least recognition and respect. Not surprising in the least as more murders are occurring each month. My dogs are around me all the time. They are an excel lent warning service. Get one. – B.M. Jong man, jy speel met ander mense se lewe. ) It is not the child’s fault if his parents are behind with school fees. Why should the school refuse to hand over the academic report? It is not fair on the child’s self esteem. Parents, get your act togeth er. Financial secretary, contact the parents well in advance and not on the day when the child expects to receive his academic report. ) To the lady selling hugely marked up yellow cliv ias last year at the Onrusmarkie, after all your assurance, they were orange. – PETRA FRITH, VERMONT ) Years ago, I got a job at an old age home. I started in the laundry department and stayed two hours. The old folk were waiting in nappies to be fetched by children who never came. When I asked why doors were locked they told me that one old gentleman runs away all the time. I am well in my seventies now and have wonderful children. They are my pride and dignity. But my terror of an old age home still remains. I love my Hermanus Times. – JP ) Often an elderly lady sits on the bench outside Pick n Pay. I found out she had no food and had sold a precious item to get by. Rather a burden to society than a state pensioner. So don’t judge. ) I received excellent and friendly service from Glassfit this week. I’ve needed a tiny piece of glass cut and they did it for free. And I was helped in and out the shop with an umbrella. ) Thank you, Lizette Brittz of Biermann Brittz Op tometrists for not performing an unnecessary eye test on me. Your honesty is appreciated.

Hermanus people are ‘truly lovely and kind’ My heart wishes to shout “Thank you!” to three Hermanus people who are truly lovely and kind. I am busy fighting a withdrawal from my account that someone has scammed me out of. Conrad of HiQ is a dear, kind man who has gone to all kinds of trouble to help me; Riaan of Nedbank Business is a dear man with a heart as big as Texas! And to Vicky of the Nedbank Enquiries counter: “You are a sweetheart.” Although I may have had a dirty double-

crosser doing me wrong I have people in this town who are helping me and that feels good. I come from a busy international city where you never run into the same person twice. After six years, well I love seeing the same beautiful faces every day. Thank you Conrad, Riaan, and Vicky and all of Hermanus who make this small town “What it’s all about”. Merry Christmas, God Bless.

KERRY VAN RENSBURG A moment of silence to honour Nelson Mandela was observed by Mayor Nicolette Botha-Guthrie, General LK Mbatha and students from the Military Academy in Saldanha who gathered at the New Harbour in Hermanus at 08:00 Friday 6 December. The Military Academy houses Stellenbosch University’s faculty of military science. This is where junior officers of the South African National Defence Force receive their professional military education before continuing with their military careers. Students assembled at the New Harbour for what should have been the last leg of the 2013 Trans Enduro exer-
cise. This 10-day exercise involving 200 students began in Port Elizabeth on 28 November. The participants were divided into land, cycling and sea teams. They travelled from Port Elizabeth and their final destination was set to be Saldanha, staying overnight in towns along the route. The cycling team covered a certain distance each day with 10 cyclists riding at a time, along predesignated routes. The sea team, which had two rubber dinghies with outboard motors, travelled along the coast with teams also changing at predetermined points. The land team moved from town to town in vehicles, raising funds for the university’s community service projects and the academy’s MASIZA initiative.
They also rendered some community services, which included cleaning streets and neighbourhoods, painting school buildings, and visiting old-age homes. Botha-Guthrie welcomed the students to Hermanus and commended the commanders on the Trans Enduro initiative, which is designed to develop leadership skills. With the news of Nelson Mandela’s death having just been announced, Second Lieutenant Goodness Sibiya said the plans for the last two days of the challenge had been set aside. Only the students involved in the community service project for Hermanus completed their task. The rest of the students were directed to head straight back to Saldanha and await orders.
Mayor Nicolette BothaGuthrie and Brigadier General LK Mbatha, along with students from the Military Academy in Saldanha Bay, ob serve a moment of silence on Friday morning in honour of Nelson Mandela who died on Thursday evening 5 December.

Ribbon fundraiser at the Whale House Museum When passing the Whale House Museum, you will notice a large wire whale with colourful ribbons tied onto it – this is in aid of fundraising for the next Whale House exhibition: Whales in Art and Culture. The Whale House is one of the more popular museums in the Old Harbour area and already has several interactive devices, which allow visitors to see whale bones and read about the large mammals. With the completion of this exhibition there will now be
far more interactive devices, which will enable visitors to read, touch and hear. In this computer-driven age where children are mostly technologically orientated, it is important to keep the museum as techno-savvy as possible. As with all large projects, funding is required and the museum only receives a small government subsidy and mostly relies on ticket sales to pay the daily bills, leaving very little money to complete projects
KAVANAGH DIAMONDS: Available from Kavanagh Dia monds & Jewellery.
PARADISO: Affordable quality piz za, pasta and much more with a fabulous sea view. Pizza café open ing soon.
After seeing a similar idea locally, Phillippa Butler thought that having a whale made from wire and selling ribbons at the museums would be a fun and colourful way of raising money, where everyone could contribute to the future of Hermanus’ museums. She approached local crafter Gilson Maswiswi who trades daily on Lemm’s Corner selling his wire products, and he agreed to make the whale, which is now the centrepiece of this initiative.

Brakkenjan party a success JANINE VAN DER RIET More than R12 000 was raised at the Hermanus Times Operation Brakkenjan fundraising dance on 4 December. The funds raised will be used to assist neglected dogs and cats in and around Hermanus. Guests lived up to all expectations with the Back to School theme, wearing old school uniforms and pigtails. They were entertained by local singers Reanli de Jager, Morné Groenewald and Arista Paxton. Annelie Braganca and Gerhard Swiegers from Infinite Dance (iDance) Ballroom & Latin showed off their moves to an appreciative audience. The success of the evening was made possi-

ble by generous sponsors like Bernard de Necker from Pet Project Aquarium, Meulen Foods who made the food at cost price, as well as many other businesses who donated prizes as lucky draws and auction items. JC Castelyn from Hair-We-Go entertained the audience as one of the masters of ceremonies. Sound engineer and DJ Abraham Smit sponsored sound and lighting equipment worth over R5 000. Together with fellow DJ, Francois Swart, they made the event look and sound great. While waiting for the last payments to be made, it seems the funds will enable Brakkenjan to buy a huge amount of pet food at cost at Pet Project in Mitchell Street. A donation will also be made to the Hermanus Animal Welfare Society.
Elmie de Necker and Madelein Wrighley had a whale of a time at the back to school party. Ilze Smith, chairperson of Hermanus An imal Welfare Society won a cut, wash and blowdry from HairWeGo in the lucky draw.

- Fanie Krige

Vehicles and Services A stepbystep guide on how to jump start a car If there is one tool that is an absolute must to have in any car, it’s a set of jumper cables. Knowing how to use them when your car battery dies, will get you back on the road before you know it. The red cable is the “positive” lead, and the black cable is the “negative” lead. If your jumper cables are one colour, the clips themselves will be marked with a + (positive) or – (negative). The positive clamps on each end of the
jumper cables should only be attached to the positive terminals of the batteries, and the negative clamps should only be attached to the negative post or grounded area of the engine block. With the assistance car running, attach a “positive” clamp to the positive terminal (+) on the assisting car, and the other end of the “positive” cable to the positive (+) terminal in your car. The “negative” clamp on the same end should then be attached to the negative termi-
nal (-) of the assisting car. Be very careful at this point as the remaining negative clamp should never come in contact with the positive clamps. The last negative clamp should be attached to a piece of metal on the engine block - not too close to the battery to avoid creating sparks. Always be sure that clips get a good connection on the terminals. Reposition clips if the first starting attempt is unsuccessful.

Start up the assisting car. Allow a few minutes for the recharging process and then start your car. If the battery has regained enough power the engine should turn over. If this doesn’t happen on the first attempt, the battery may need more time to build up a charge. Leaving your car to idle, remove the jumper leads in the reverse order that they were applied, starting with the negative clamp on the engine block. – Women24

27 Mitsubishi launches its all-new Pajero Sport 4x2 model Hermanus Times
BOLAND Auto Sold
12 December, 2013
QUICKPIC Mitsubishi Motors SA has introduced an important new derivative to its range of Pajero Sport full-size SUVs. It is a very well equipped 4x2 model which has the latest 2,5 F high performance turbo diesel engine developing 131 kW of power at 4 000 r/min and 350 Nm of torque at 1 800 r/ min. This new engine is particularly fuel efficient with a fuel consumption of only 8,5F/100 km. This engine performs well, and as one of the higher torque engines in the class, delivers the goods on the highway and in the city. The new addition to the face lifted Pajero Sport 4x4 models introduced in September 2013 is particularly well equipped, while being the lowest priced of its direct competitors. Priced at R419 900 the Pajero Sport 4x2 offers outstanding value for money considering the very high level of standard equipment for comfort, convenience and safety, as well as the versatility of its variable arrangements
Road holding is very good, gravel roads are dispatched without hiccup and the Paje ro Sport has a settled stable feel.

for the second and third rows of seats. This new derivative in the Pajero Sport range also benefits from the eye-catching and bold new frontal styling and features such as colour-coded door handles and exterior rear view mirrors, which now incorporate indicator repeaters. Wheels are more aggressively styled 17” alloys with 245/65 R17 tyres. Safety features in this new derivative include active stability and traction control, while Mitsubishi’s insistence of high levels in terms of active and passive safety means six airbags, anti-lock brakes (ABS) and electronic brake distribution (EBD), as well as Mitsubishi’s characteristic RISE safety cell body structure. As befits its luxury specification it is available only with a five-speed automatic transmission, and leads its competitors by having paddle shifts on the steering wheel for those wanting to select gear ratios manually. The seats are covered in black leather, while the steering wheel is also leather covered and incorporates multi-function switches, including cruise control, Bluetooth control and audio control. The rear-view mirror has an electronic chromatic system to prevent glare automatically, while the rear park assist system now includes a reversing camera besides the standard rear park distance control Vehicles like the Pajero Sport are great for long distances and used by families for road trips. Additional features, perfect for this, include full climate control and rear controls for the air-conditioning for passengers. There are also seven seats, although the rear set can fold down flat for more boot space. Full size SUVs have plenty of interior room and the Pajero Sport is no exception, featuring seven seats and luggage space of 1 149 Fwith the third row of seats folded flat and 1 776 F when both the second and third
rows are folded flat. The latest Pajero Sport models will be available in a choice of five colours: Eisen Grey Mica, Cool Silver Metallic, Quartz Bronze Metallic,
Medium Red and White Pearl. The Pajero Sport is covered by a 3year/100 000 km warranty and 5year/90 000 km service plan.

Jaguar XF 2-litre: the sheepish apology HANJO STIER You find me here with a bowed head and the proverbial hat in my hands. The reason I’m clutching on to the rim of that great remorseful symbol is because I owe you, dear reader, an apology. The same goes for everyone in the employ of Jaguar or ZF; I’m sorry for what I wrote about the XF 2-litre turbo-petrol. I’m not one to make excuses and I hate people who don’t take responsibility for their actions but I do need to clarify how this all came about. A few months ago we received a crimson metallic Jaguar XF 2-litre turbo-petrol press car which was absolutely awful to drive. Jerky, unpredictable, rough – very un-Jaguar-ish. My impressions were mirrored by the fine feelings of our female scribe who confirmed that the red Jag was terribly erratic in its response and had a crude, indecisive gearbox. What made this very peculiar was that the unit in question, ZF’s celebrated eight-speed auto, has impressed us no end in every other car we found it in. A few weeks after the dreadful car left and my damning report was published, I chatted to a good friend and fellow motoring journalist about test cars – yes, most of us can only talk wheels – when the 2-litre Jag came up and I regurgitated all the hateful slander contained in said review. Shock and awe filled the room. Jerky, rough and indecisive shouldn’t come within ten pages of a Jaguar XF review, my friend al-
It may be getting on in years and feel cramped compared to some rivals but it’s just so beautiful and elegant.

leged, telling me of the smoothness and eager precision he encountered in this vehicle. That’s when it dawned on me that there must have been something wrong with the car at the time we tested it. A few calls and sheepish enquiries later, I got permission for a revisit of the exact same vehicle which brings us to the present moment. After a week of driving the previously accused, I can now confirm that the car is absolutely wonderful and all my negative comments were completely unfounded. Before you jump to the conclusion that Jaguars are unreliable beasts, I have to point out that test cars tend to lead a hard life and random failures happen to other brands too; even the ones you don’t expect it of. My own cars also had hiccups;
moody mass airflow sensors, loose pipes and such like can wreak havoc on anything. What you need to know, is this: where before the 177kW (241hp) engine was lethargic and the gearbox was utterly hopeless, this time around the Jaguar XF 2-litre turbopetrol was a symphony of modern four-cylinder turbo power, masses of torque and deliciously smooth eight-speed automated gear shifts. The top two or three ratios can be a bit tall when the motorway goes uphill but the previously lacking torque and gunshot down-shifts have been replaced by reasonable grunt and silky gear transitions. The only hesitation we found in the gearbox was when going from little to full throttle – it takes a second to find the right cog.
Yet again I have to stress that it’s nowhere near the previously frustrating power gaps and gear jerks. In fact, you can pre-load the gearbox in Sport or manual mode and even turn the XF 2-litre into a seminaughty sports saloon. Our performance testing also highlighted the drastic improvement we felt. A few months ago, the XF hit 100km/h in 10 seconds flat, reaching 400m in 16.8 seconds at 129km/h. Yesterday morning, the same car shaved a whopping 2,6 seconds off the 100km/h sprint and reached 400m 2,1 seconds and 25,4km/h faster. Unsurprisingly, the revitalised Jag also posted much better fuel economy. All this newfound responsiveness even made us get up at stupid o’clock and throw the XF around a moun-
tain pass, where it exhibited fantastic grip and a wonderfully even power delivery. Torque rises to maximum at 2 000rpm, power peaks at 5 500rpm and the engine will reach its redline in a lovely, linear fashion. The motor has a slightly lumpy cold-start idle but otherwise doesn’t put a piston wrong. That gearbox, that amazing gearbox, has also vindicated itself and gets my renewed and highest praise. And as for the Jaguar XF, it still is one of my favourites and a car whose gorgeous metal I wouldn’t mind parking in my garage. It may be getting on in years and feel cramped compared to some rivals but it’s just so beautiful and elegant. Affordable and diverse too, with prices from R535 000 to R615 000 for the four cylinder models, the range continues with V6 petrols and diesels around R750 000 right up to the supercharged V8 R and RS models at a million plus. Those last two are decidedly angry cats and obviously have a harder ride but all other XF’s are what a Jaguar should be. Quiet, comfortable and composed. Even the “base spec” cars have leather trim, electric everything, keyless entry, pulsating starter button, sci-fi gear lever and animated air vents. Go for the 2.2-litre turbo-diesel if you want hilariously good fuel consumption and where before I advised you to stay clear of this 2-litre turbo-petrol model, I can now highly recommend it to anyone looking for a medium-sized executive saloon with a perky engine and brilliant gearbox.

Ford reveals brand new Mustang QUICKPIC
Ford Mustang, the world’s favourite pony car has been completely re-imagined. South African fans can look forward to seeing the completely redesigned and re-engineered Mustang on local roads in 2015.
April 17 2014 marks the 50th anniversary of the introduction of the original Ford Mustang. Mustang will continue to be built in America at the Flat Rock Assembly Plant. PHOTO: QUICKPIC
The new Ford Mustang fastback and convertible models promise exceptional performance and refinement while embracing the Mustang’s half-century of heritage and status as a global icon. Ford Mustang inspires passion like no other car,” said Raj Nair, Ford Group Vice President, Global Product Development. “The visceral look, sound and performance of Mustang resonate with people, even if they’ve never driven one. Mustang is definitely more than just a car – it is the heart and soul
of Ford.” More than 9 million Mustangs have been sold since it was first launched in 1964. The world’s most-liked vehicle on Facebook, Mustang has made thousands of appearances in film, television, music and video games, and is one of 15 new vehicles that Ford will launch in South Africa by 2017. “The Mustang’s formidable reputation for performance and its iconic status as a symbol of freedom and optimism precedes it even in those parts of the world where the car has never been sold,” said Stephen Odell, Ford Executive Vice President, Europe, Middle East and Africa. “The new Mustang epitomises Ford’s aggressive product acceleration; technologically advanced and forward-looking, but without forgetting the heritage that has inspired Ford customers for generations.” The new Mustang has been developed with impressive performance, driving dynamics and usability in mind – and includes a significant amount of advanced driver convenience and driver aid technologies. “The illustrious Mustang brand has eluded us for some years in South Africa, but as part of the One Ford strategy we can now look forward to welcoming this iconic nameplate to South African showrooms,” said Ford Marketing Manager Gavin Golightly. “Today’s reveal has been much anticipated around the globe and we are thrilled to now be part of the Mustang journey.” The clean-sheet design of both Ford Mustang fastback and convertible evokes the essential character of the vehicle, retaining key design elements of the classic Mustangs recognisable to car fans across the globe, including the long sculpted hood and short rear deck, with a contemporary execution. “You only get one chance to make a first impression and when you see this car, you immediately see a Mustang strong and true;” said Moray Callum, Ford Executive Director, Design, The Americas. Several key design features define the new Ford Mustang, including: . A low roof height and wide stance . Sleek profile enabled by steeply sloped windshield and rear glass . Three-dimensional, tri-bar taillamps . Contemporary execution of the iconic car’s signature shark-bite front fascia The new Ford Mustang features all-new front and rear suspension systems. At the front, a new perimeter subframe helps to stiffen the front structure while reducing mass, providing a strong foundation for more predictable wheel control that benefits handling, steering and ride. At the rear is an all-new integral-link independent rear suspension. The geometry, springs, dampers and bushings all have been specifically modified and tuned for this high-performance application, and are well-suited to high speed driving. New aluminium rear knuckles help reduce unsprung mass for improved ride and handling. The new Mustang features a significant number of innovative technologies providing drivers with enhanced information, control, and connectivity when they want it. The advanced, Ford-developed stability control is tuned to maximise the new Mustang’s dynamic capabilities with features like torque vectoring that directs engine power to individual wheels to keep the car on course. When the time comes to turn up the wick at the track, manual transmission variants of the Mustang GT include standard launch control that enables drivers to achieve smooth, consistent starts every time. Advanced driver-assist features include standard Ford SYNC™ with Voice Control and Touchscreen, that lets drivers control their entertainment. April 17 2014 marks the 50th anniversary of the introduction of the original Ford Mustang. Mustang will continue to be built in America at the Flat Rock Assembly Plant. “From day one, we knew if we were going to build a new Mustang, we had to do it right,” said Dave Pericak, Mustang Chief Engineer. “We built a new Mustang from the ground up that is fast, great-looking, refined and efficient, without losing any of the raw appeal that people around the world have associated with Mustang for decades.” Models destined for South African shores have yet to be confirmed.

It’s Touchies season again The All Gold Hot Summer of Touch is back for its 12th year on the beaches, when the country’s top eight beach teams will battle it out for the title King of the Beaches. TOUGH COOKIE: Andrea Hill (second from left) from Thai Combat Gym in Hermanus won her debut Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fight on Saturday at the Sunningdale Sports Complex in Tableview. She is the first female MMA winner in the Cape Fight League. Andrea’s opponent was Amy Carter from Panther Fight Gym in Cape Town. According to Yvette Ingles, Andrea’s trainer, she won the fight just seconds before the end of the third round with a technical knockout. “The referee stopped the fight because her oppo nent had received too many blows to the head,” says Yvette. With Andrea are Sheena Haines (Thai Combat Johannesburg), Yvette Ingles (Thai Combat Hermanus) and Lloyd Kemertgoglou (Thai Combat Johannesburg).

The Zero Gravity Hermanus Indoor Tournament was a hugely successful, colourful affair, with 14 different teams slugging it out last weekend. The tournament saw the return of the defending champions, Boomslang, all the way from Mutual Hockey Club, who were victorious over newcomers Maroon Machine, sporting Matieland tops. The final score was 4-1 to Boomslang. Third place went to a local team, Noord Parow Roffies, who had a good run into the semis before being swept off the field by Boomslang yet again; the two teams met before in the 2012 final. Taking a not-so-distant fourth spot, was Usual Suspects, playing in pink as the Bulls rugby team did recently. Another visiting side, Minions, was an allfemale ensemble in canary yellow and looking just as cute yet unpredictable as their namesakes from the animation hit, Despicable Me. They won over everyone with their song and dance. On Sunday afternoon prizes were handed out to winners, runners up, and up-and-comers, to name but a few categories. We thank the following local businesses for their massive contribution to this ever-growing tournament: Checkers Hermanus, Café on Main, Hermanus Screenprinters, Procom, Spur, Vee’s Videos, Hermanus Hardware, De Lau Wellness Centre and Hermanus High School. Thanks to all the locals too, who came out to enjoy the weekend of hockey with us.
