STORMERS HAVE ARRIVED: A 39man DHL Stormers squad arrived in Hermanus on Tuesday after noon for a fourday training camp ahead of the 2015 Vodacom Super Rugby com petition. This is the fifth year the Stormers have come to Hermanus for training. Fans will have an opportunity to meet and interact with their favourite players after an open training session at Hermanus Primary School on Friday from 10:00 – 11:00. Shortly after their arrival, some of the players gathered in front of the Windsor Hotel, where they are staying.

Patients run out of patience JANINE VAN DER RIET The running of the newly built Hermanus Community Day Centre (CDC) constructed at an estimated cost of R38 million, is a disgrace, say community members. The CDC, which opened its doors recently, was established to offer services to the public, which were previously rendered at the old Zwelihle Clinic, Mount Pleasant Clinic and Hermanus Clinic. The primary

health care and Anti-retroviral Therapy (ART) services which were being rendered at the Hermanus Hospital’s outpatient department, has been amalgamated under one roof. When the Hermanus Times visited the CDC premises on Tuesday, a long queue of patients, young, old, pregnant, sick and some residents with babies were standing outside the premises in the icy cold weather, to either make an appointment, waiting to honour an appointment

made earlier, fetch chronic medication or sick residents urgently needing to see a health care professional. “It does not matter if you already have an appointment or if you want to make one, to just get to the reception area you need to wait outside, as the security guard only allows 10 people in at a time,” a Mount Pleasant resident said. Although the outside entrance, next to Swartdam road, is covered with a roof, the sides are open and

the rain and wind blows straight in. Godfrey Pononae, a community cultural leader, was also at the premises on Tuesday, after he received numerous complaints from residents in Zwelihle. The previous day the queue of people waiting outside apparently went around the block. Pononae says the CDC was also partially closed during the festive season. “If they are short-staffed, there are many volunteers with the nec-

essary medical background that could help out. To build a fancy clinic worth millions, but to not have the equipment or staff, or manpower to run the place decently, is a waste of government’s money!” He says it is a disgrace that people should wait for hours just to make an appointment, only to come back a few weeks later to be at the appointment, only to wait for hours on end, again. Missing swimmer not found yet KERRY VAN RENSBURG

At time of going to press, Nico’s family, including his sisters Volien and Zandrey, were still waiting to hear whether his body had been recovered or not. Hermanus SAPS spokesperson, Lt Fadila September, visited the family on Monday and says the initial search for Nico lasted four days and police divers were expected to continue searching, weather depending, on Wednesday. The public is asked to keep their eyes open for any sign of the drowned man. Dorothy says waiting for Nico’s body to be found has been very difficult. We are heartbroken, and will hold a memorial service for him at Fick’s Pool on Sunday 18 January.

He was a nice young man. He attended Hawston High and since leaving school worked as a painter.

This is how Dorothy and Archie Mqu of Mount Pleasant described their 22-year-old nephew, Negotiation (Nico) Grootboom, who is missing and presumed drowned after he went swimming in the sea in front of Fick’s Pool on Wednesday 7 January. Dorothy and Archie raised Nico, along with his two sisters, from the age of five. He is the son of Dorothy’s late sister Audrea (Boyce) Grootboom. They say Nico was a good swimmer and was always in the water and regularly swam in the sea. He went swimming with two of his friends last Wednesday. One of the friends, who sat on the rocks with the dogs that were with them, told Nico’s aunt, after the incident, that Nico jumped into the sea with his legs straight and stiff and his arms at his side. According to this friend, when Nico came out of the water, foam was coming out of his mouth. The other friend, who was in the water with Nico, tried to help him, but apparently Nico grabbed him around the neck. They struggled and the friend was afraid he would get pulled down with Nico. Nico was very weak, and when he let go, he sank down

into the water. According to a statement issued by Craig Lambinon, from NSRI Sea Rescue Communications, at 12:38 on Wednesday 7 January, NSRI Hermanus launched the sea rescue craft Le Jenmar II following reports of a drowning in progress in the sea in front of Fick’s Pool. “On arrival on scene a search commenced for a local male who had disappeared under water aft-

er reportedly being swept into the sea at Fick’s Pool. The SA Police Services responded and a police dive unit was activated.” Despite an extensive search no sign of the missing young man has been found as yet. Last week the NSRI issued a warning ahead of the full moon spring tide stating that the sea conditions and rip tides would be more extreme from 2 January until at least 9 January.

Nico Grootboom (22) is missing and presumed drowned after he went swimming in the sea in front of Fick’s Pool.

“We heard screaming and looked up to see two teenage girls running along the coastal path, with blood streaming down the one girl’s hands and legs. They were both shouting for help!” Leigh Bouwer is still furious after witnessing this incident on 7 January at 15:00 near Jan Rabie’s tidal pool in Onrus. It was a glorious day and Bouwer decided to take her four kids to the tidal pool for a swim. “We enjoyed the water and sun, until I heard hysterical screams, and then I saw the two girls, aged 15 and 16, running for their lives. I ran to them, only to discover that these sweet girls had just been mugged at knifepoint and were running away from their attacker.” Bouwer says the girls, who were from Cape Town on holiday in Onrus, were absolutely

hysterical. One of them had fallen on the rocks, badly cutting her leg, in an effort to get away from their attacker. He took their bags, with cellphones and an iPad. After she tried to calm the girls, she got their parent’s numbers and called them with the bad news. “Their parents were devastated. It was a very traumatic incident for them and the scars, both physically and emotionally, will remain with them for a very long time to come.” The injured girl had to undergo an operation and stitches to both knees, but is now at home in the loving arms of her family, says Bouwer. They also had scars and bruises on their faces and hands. After the incident, Bouwer took both girls each a little gift of a whale tale necklace to try and cheer them up a bit so that when they leave Hermanus, they have something positive to think about. Police are investigating the incident.

Stampvol kerk getuig van liefde vir Doris Maree JANINE VAN DER RIET In die 15-jaar geskiedenis van die United Kerk in Hermanus, was dié kerk nog nooit so vol soos Saterdag, 10 Januarie, met Doris Maurette Maree se begrafnis nie. So het Eerwaarde dr.

My siel is veilig by God,” het Doris gesê.

The slithering snakes behind the bites This is the time of year during which most snakebites occur and Dr Sandy Waddingham from the Hermanus Animal Hospital, says they have already dealt with four cases of Puff adder bites over the past festive season. “We have treated three dogs (in Vermont, Fisherhaven Puff adder and Stanford area) and one horse (in the Hemel-enAarde valley), all bitten by a Puff adder. “During January and February snakebites are prevalent and we would like to inform the public that anti-venom is available at the Hermanus Animal Hospital, Mediclinic and the Hermanus Provincial Hospital.” In case of an emergency if an animal is bitten by a snake, you can contact the Hermanus Animal Hospital on 028 312 3065. In the Western Cape there are four main possible types of snakes that could be lethal if their bites were left untreated. Humans, dogs and cats are more or less equally susceptible to the snakebites and their treatment is the same. Cattle and horses are less susceptible to their bites. That is why horses are used to make anti-venom. This does not mean that if a horse is bitten it should be left untreated as

they can also die from snakebites. Puff adders This is the most common snakebite as this is a lazy snake that often lies in the sun. With its good camouflage is often not seen before it is stepped on. Dogs will often attack the snake and this snake prefers to fight back rather than sail away. Puff adder bites constitute about 80% of all snakebite victims, humans and animals. Cape cobra This snake is possibly the most dangerous snake in this part of the country (we don’t get mambas here) as its venom causes paralysis and thus asphyxiation because the breathing muscles don’t work. A patient generally has a window of only half an hour with this particular snake between the bite and treatment, according to Waddingham. “So it’s important to get the patient to the hospital as soon as possible.” This snake will often be found in

Boomslang

Cape cobra your home or old derelict buildings and near water, especially after mountain fires. Rinkhals This snake spits its venom from a distance, up to 2 m, aiming for the eyes. This venom is very damaging to the cornea and the eyes should be washed out with water, milk or rooibos tea and then have anti-venom applied direct to the cornea as an eyedrop. This snake is active at night but is sometimes seen on cloudy days. If threatened, it may play dead. Antivenom is very effective. Boomslang This is a very shy snake that lives

in trees. It moves at lightning speed and will only bite if it feels seriously threatened. Bites are therefore a very rare occurrence. Advice on what to do if you or your animal are bitten by a snake 1. Try not to panic. 2. Try to move the patient’s body as little as possible. Exercise Rinkhals increases the blood flow and this speeds the circulation of venom. 3. If you have anti-venom and are far from a medical facility inject antivenom in the area of the bite. 4. Get medical intervention as fast as possible. ) Who to contact if you want a

snake removed from your property André Neethling from Sandbaai has been catching snakes for many years. He says he catches between four and five snakes weekly during this time of year. Neethling can be contacted on 082 425 0456.

HITTING THE RIGHT NOTE: This group of singers from Her manus formed part of the vol untary Winelands Choir for three concerts in December to sing Christmas Carols with Richard Cock at Bishops in Cape Town and at Oude Liber tas in Stellenbosch. Money is raised for music bursaries at Bishops and a charity of Oude Libertas choice. Even though it entails much travelling the group said it is always a privi lege to sing under the baton of Richard Cock. They are (back row): Judy Shirley, Leny Koois tra, Sylvia Cooper, Cathy Ken yon and René du Plooy; (front) Sheila Lyle, Dave Wright, David Kotze and Richard Cock.

SPREADING CHRISTMAS CHEER: In De cember, the Overstrand As sociation for Persons with Disabilities (OAPD) had their second annual Christ mas party for children with disabilities. All children with disabilities from Hawston, Mount Pleasant and Zwelihle were invited to attend the event. The children were surprised by Father Christmas who handed out presents to each of them. Staff from OAPD thanked the coffee morning ladies from Fisherhaven for the presents they donated and for putting a smile on every child’s face.

BUSY SEASON FOR CAMPHILL FARM: During the holiday season, the Camphill Farm Community was ‘making hay’ with var ious fundraising initiatives, culminating in the draw for their annual raffle on Saturday 10 January at the Hermanus Country Market. Veena Hira’s lucky ticked number 167 was drawn for the R25 000 cash prize. At the draw were (from left) Kholeka Gertrude Nqcaba (a Camphill Farm resident), Elizabeth Harris (the Camphill Farm Community resi dent who sold more than 120 raffle tickets and also drew the winning ticket), Mada Morkel (Camphill Farm’s fundraiser) and Don Adams (auditor of the raffle). All proceeds of the raffle go directly to the care of the indi gent residents at Camphill Farm who have no family or livelihood. The Arabella was thanked for donating a weekend for two to the (nonCamphill) person who sold the most tickets, as was the Windsor Hotel for donat ing a breakfast for two to the person (from Camphill) who sold the most tickets, and Hermitage brokers for sponsoring all printing costs. GIFT WRAPPED: In the 10 days leading up to Christmas, the gift wrapping table outside Checkers at the Hermanus Station Mall was manned by Camphill Farm Com munity volunteers. More than 800 m of gift wrapping paper was used and over R10 000 was donated to Camphill Farm Community through this project. Checkers made this wonderful opportunity possible and provided a lot of the wrapping paper. Volunteers helped wrap presents of all shapes and sizes. Elizabeth Harris and Theresa Kistler, faced with their biggest wrapping challenge, had to work out how to wrap the Checkers teddy.

St Cyprian’s stalwart passes away Patricia Margaret Faure (née Millar) passed away on 26 December 2014, exactly a month before her 87th birthday. Mary, as she was known by one and all, was born in Paarl. Her father, William, captained the 1912 Springbok rugby team on their tour to the UK and she was an enthusiastic rugby fan, watching as many of the games as she could on her TV in the assisted living section of Onrus Manor, where she had lived for the past seven years. Mary enjoyed needlework and it was due to her enthusiasm and ongoing efforts that a kneeler project was started and continues to this day at her former school, St. Cyprian’s in Cape Town. She was honoured with the prestigious St Cyprian’s Union Award

in 2008 for this project. She and her sister, the late Judy Wolhuter of Hermanus, completed cream and gold wedding kneelers in 1988, in time for the wedding of one of the Overberg past pupils. Mary is survived by her two sons, Pieter who lives in Rondebosch, and Philip who came out from Australia for the funeral, which was held on Monday 5 January at St. Peter’s Church. Her three grandsons also attended the service as did her niece Stephanie Wolhuter Inggs. The service was led by Lyndall Murray, herself an old girl of SCS. Mary had requested that the choir sing the “Magnificat” (the song of our Lord’s mother) as well as the rousing hymn, “For All the Saints who from their Labours Rest”, which is sung every year by the pupils of

EDITORIAL COMMENT Patients’ patience sorely tested It is like waiting to unwrap a big, beautifully presented gift. You know it’s a brand new fancy bike, but when the day comes that you can open it, the bells and whistles are there, but the wheels are missing. The patience of patients visiting the recently opened R38 million Community Day Centre (CDC) is being severely tested. The beautiful new building promises impeccable service - no more standing in queues and waiting hours to see a doctor or make an appointment. Unfortunately, this is not the case at present and patients say they sometimes wait for longer to be attended to, than at the often over-crowded smaller clinics they visited before. Granted, there will be teething problems, as acknowledged by a CDC spokesperson. And perhaps the CDC underestimated the number of visitors. But surely there are some measures that can be implemented straight away. The absence of anything to sit on, while waiting in the queue, can be addressed, for starters. Dividing people into groups depending on what their ailment is makes sense, but it should be handled with more discretion. Hopefully the authorities hear the patients’ outcry and change the way “business is done” in the near future.

My man (94 jaar oud) loop moeilik, ek met ’n vierwiel-karretjie.

Employers must have firstaid boxes available In reference to the letter published in the Hermanus Times on 8 January: First-aid kit at businesses should be compulsory. According to the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 85 of 1993, under general safety regulations: “An employer shall take all reasonable steps that are necessary under the circumstances, to ensure that persons at work receive prompt first aid treatment in case of injury or emergency.” A summary of the act includes: Where more than five employees are employed at a workplace, the employer of such employees shall provide a first aid box or boxes at or near the workplace, which shall be available and accessible for the treatment of injured persons at that workplace. Taking into account the type of injuries that are likely to occur at a workplace, the nature of the activities performed and the number of employees employed at such workplace, the employer shall make sure

that the first-aid box or boxes contain suitable first-aid equipment. Where more than 10 employees are employed at a workplace, the employer of such employees shall take steps to ensure that: ) for every group of up to 50 employees at that workplace, or in the case of a shop or an office as contemplated in the Basic Conditions of employment Act, 1983 (Act No. 3 of 1983), ) for every group of up to 100 employees, at least one person is readily available during normal working hours, who is in possession of a valid certificate of competency in first aid, issued by The South African Red Cross Society, The St, John Ambulance, The South African First-Aid League or a person or organisation approved by the chief inspector for this purpose. LEON AND ANNA BRAND EMR AMBULANCE SERVICES

Thanks to all who protect us over the festive season I would like to thank Neville Michaels, Director of Protection Services, and his team, the SAPS, the security companies, Sea Rescue and Ilze Smit (Hermanus Animal Welfare) and her dedicated members who took care of the abandoned and traumatised animals during the season. Mind you, it is not only during the festive season that we are protected, but throughout the year! Lest we forget, they did not have the pleasure

of sharing the festive season with loved ones, family and friends, because they were out there taking care of us and keeping us safe and free from harm. Perhaps the community can repay them in some small measure by supporting them whenever and wherever we can. I take this opportunity of wishing them all a happy, healthy, prosperous and safe new year.

FELICITY CHEERIN

Ziggy is our hero! It is Christmas Eve, 19:05. Just finished preparing mountains of food and ready to relax for the festivities. Suddenly all goes very quiet and we realise that there is no electrical power. Curse Eskom! What a time to have load-shedding. Sympathise with restaurants and the rest of society, but wait, we hear music playing somewhere and suddenly it dawns on us, this is not our biggest nightmare Eskom. Check the main switch, it’s tripped! Ok, reset all switches. Time now 19:30. Starting to get a little anxious. Try again, but the main switch keeps tripping. Now panic starts setting in. Time 19:45. What now? We need help. An electrician. Where will we find one to come out on Christmas eve at 20:00? Then we remember the “Saint” who is always willing to help. Ziggy Rober. Phone him and he replies “No problem, be there now”. An hour later our electricity is restored and festivities can resume. Thank you Ziggy for your professionalism and consideration. Our town needs people like you.

THE HONEY FAMILY

Triggerhappy baboon shooter must be caught So another baboon has been shot and killed in Voëlklip, the second victim on a vacant stand adjacent to my house. The report in the Hermanus Times focuses on the accurate shot to the female’s body and the poor baby clinging to its dead mother. All very sad. What I find disconcerting, to say the least, is that no mention has ever been made that SAPS are following up on what progress is being made to identify this self-appointed vigilante in our midst. It is illegal to discharge a fire-arm in a municipal area. Period. So not only is this trigger-happy shooter an expert marksman, probably using a scope, he/she is also disregarding the lives of kids skateboarding in the area and countless people walking their dogs. This is a tragedy waiting to happen. Bad things happen when good people stand by and do nothing.

On Friday, Overstranders can expect a bit of rain, especially in the morning. But for the rest of the weekend and next week, the sun will shine and it will almost feel like summer again.

Something must be done about the bullying at school There are bullies in every school and in life, you cannot avoid them, they are everywhere and we have to learn to deal with them and move on. But, having said this, if your child gets bullied for being a little different and not fitting into the cookie cutter mould of a certain posh private school in our area it is a problem. I find it unacceptable that concerns are not taken seriously and obvious blatant proof not considered. If more than one pupil has left due to matters mentioned, surely, by the exiting of these pupils it would be a glowing, neon sign headlining: Here lies a problem, a problem that needs to be addressed. When a group of young ladies can conduct themselves with an air of arrogance and cruelty with words because someone does not fit into the keg and the fault pointed directly at your child in every circumstance, then one has to wonder if they indeed are going for a certain calibre of pupil – the aggressive, I’m far better than you, entitled pupil. Another form of pupil onslaught that gets brushed under the carpet, also after numerous meetings and chats, is bodily harm. Boys will be boys and your son coming home on a daily basis with bite marks, skin ripping pinches and arm squeezes so hard it looks like carpet burns – well, this is okay apparently, stop being such an overprotective mommy. I understand if the child has impulse control issues, I have a daughter that is highly prone to throwing caution to the wind and acting on impulse...luckily hers does not manifest in bodily harm to others, only to herself on some occasions but this is where teachers monitoring the school playfield

during breaks comes in – where are they? Each and every time my son comes home with injuries I asked if the teacher saw and got involved…no, no one saw. This other child has a right to be in a mainstream school and to be treated the same as the others but if impulse control is an issue then special precautions must be put in place. Monitor play time and step in when things look like they are getting out of hand. These are kiddies in the age group of 6-7 and need constant supervision during free time when roughing it takes place. This is purely an opinion and concern from parents and step parents and I am very secure in the knowledge that there are other concerned parents out there sitting with the difficult and financially strained choice – do we stay or do we move our children out? We are hoping matters get taken more seriously in the new year and our concerns tackled head on. (letter shortened - ED)

UNHAPPY PARENT

Hennie Mentz, principal: Curro Hermanus responds: Curro Hermanus believes that every learner should be able to attend school in a safe evironment, and should be happy at school. Thus, should any situation come up we deal with it and put the necessary measures in place to address the situation. I am aware of the situation the author of the letter is referring to and we will again this year focus on the interaction among our learners. We will also specifically focus on this problematic situation and will support the learners in their development. Teachers are on duty daily, before school and during breaks.

Keep our wild horses safe The wild horses have had a number of threats through the last year but none so undeniably devious and unbelievable. Read on. Leon Steyn was approached by a law enforcement officer who told him that during the first week of January a truck arrived at the parking area at the end of the Rooisand Road towing a horse box at sunset. They off-loaded two men and drove back up the road away. The men hid in some bushes after putting food down. A group of horses were nearby. Some of the horses came to feed and the two men managed to get a rope around one horse’s neck. The yearling which had previously had an operation on her one eye to remove it, was caught, but she broke loose and escaped still wearing the rope around her neck. This was watched by fishermen on a boat on the lagoon, who went closer and started shouting at the men who then

withdrew to the vehicle which sped off. The following day Barry Vermeulen, a guide at the Equestrian Centre Overstrand was conducting a guided tour of the Rooisand vlei for tourists and riders. He rode to the top of the vlei where the dam is. There he saw the herd with the yearling who had a ski rope fastened fairly tightly around her neck. Barry dismounted and managed to loosen it, but the horse got a fright and the rope landed loosely around her stomach. When he saw the yearling later, the rope had fallen off. We at ECO let the CapeNature know about the incident. We are appealing to all locals who are in the Rooisand area that should they see a horse box or trailer big enough to carry horses and / or someone with rope trying to catch the horses, to please let Barry or Sarah know (079 773 1003) or call Leon Steyn on 082 447 6023.

Finding healing through art JANINE VAN DER RIET A mother who was set alight by her 19-yearold son in July last year, is now, after months of physical and mental pain and an intensive road to recovery, ready to share this horrific experience of hers with the public. But, says Anthea van der Pluym, she does not only want to talk about the negative part of the experience, but about the positive side too, about the healing process and how she found healing in art. Before this tragedy, where her only son attacked her and set her alight, Anthea was a motivational speaker, talking about previous terrible events that had occurred earlier in her life. She has been the victim of violent crimes before, and experienced her father’s death during a

farm killing, followed by a family rape and assault. Today she is an author and inspirational speaker who has dedicated her life to helping others heal.

Her latest e-book, Letting Go of Pain, Embracing Wholeness, was released last year and deals with issues regarding violent crimes. She has written a number of e-books to date, including Plaasaanval-Oorlewingsgids/Farm Attack Survivor’s Guide. ) Join Anthea and photographer Johann Kruger for an inspirational evening of motivational speaking, video music, oil painting, ceramics and photography. The theme of the evening is: Treasure the Scars. This mixed media collaboration will take place on 12 February at 18:00 at ELL Eatery at Spookfontein Wine Farm in the Hemelen-Aarde Valley. Book a place at R100 a person. The evening includes snacks and wine.

Skakel Annemarie Rautenbach by 083 290 7692 / 028 316 4550.

LETTERS Why no takeaways on special days? I walked in at my local restaurant as usual, as I live just around the corner and often order take-away food and have a beer or two while I wait. Today (8 January) at 18:20 I ordered my normal beer and takeway as I have done so many times before. I was refused my take-away because it was “Burger Night”; two for one, and the kitchen too busy. I was also not allowed to order burgers at the special two-for-one, price because it was a take-away. I explained that I would pay the full price as depicted on the menu and was not all that interested in the specials. All I wanted was my normal take-away order. The order was refused, based on the fact that it was a take-away. I asked that if I walked over to a table and sat down, ordered the same meal, whether they could then accommodate me. The answer was, yes, they could. So the kitchen was not too busy and I would get the order. I asked if there was a difference between putting the burger on a plate or in a styrofoam container and being paid the same (full) price), whether there was in fact any difference. The waiter said “no”, and explained he was not the one making the rules. I asked a waitress about the logic of this and she said it was a new rule. “Sorry, we cannot serve you a take-

way.” I asked the waiter to speak to the manager but he moved away to serve another customer and did not acknowledge my request. I paid for my beer around 10 minutes later and asked him if he was happy to wilfully refuse my order in a half-full restaurant, based on a new rule. He said “yes” because he could not change the new rule. I have supported this restaurant from the time they opened. I tip very well and I am at least a face they know. This is so short-sighted; just because you have had a good Christmas season and we locals are not important any more until the winter months come. I may not be one of the everyday rugby-watching barflies at Tipples, but I am still a customer and that is what earns your money.

UNHAPPY CUSTOMER

Joey Meyer from Tipples Bar and Grill responds: I have personally contacted this person regarding the rules at Tipples, and I have received no response from him. All our locals understand that unfortunately we can’t do take-aways on our specials nights, because they would have to wait for more than an hour for the food to be ready. Takeaways wait just as long as the people seated in the restaurant. I am sorry to hear that this person is going to such extremes to sully our name.

Is Banting for the birds? I recently acquired one of those wire goodies that has a bottle attached to parts of it. The bottle is filled with, as per instructions, sugar water and a touch of red food colouring. All to welcome birds to the garden. This was done and the bottle duly hung on the wall outside the lounge window. The result is amazing and from about 17:00 onwards the garden resembles Heathrow. Arrivals, departures, a few minor disagreements and an awful lot of jockying for position. I then decided to swop the sugar for xylitol. In deference to Tim Noakes and the growing wave of thought that Banting is for birds. However I remain concerned. Is it okay to feed birds all this stuff?

I have visions of pin tailed Wydahs, white eyes, Cape Batis, weavers sunbirds and my beloved wagtails all requiring doses of Ritalin in the future. Is there anyone out there who could help?

MOIRA WALKER VOËLKLIP

Leon Steyn, environmental specialist says: I have been feeding my garden birds for many years on sugar water and bird seed without encountering any problems apart from the cost. Watch out for hawks they can see this as a place to catch smaller birds. I don’t see xylitol as a problem is place of sugar. I would however rather stay with sugar for my garden birds.

Should fireworks be banned completely? The year-end holiday season has passed with 10 veldfires having been successfully dealt with by the Overstrand Municipality (OM) within a period of five hours. “Four of these fires were confirmed to have been started by fireworks”. ( HT, 8 January 2015, page 2) Similarly, 80% of veldfires in the Cape Peninsula were reported to have been started by fireworks and/ or “Chinese lanterns”. These fires were difficult to extinguish. How many more firework celebrations do we need to endure before a catastrophic fire or fires occur in the Overstrand as a consequence of the irresponsible use of fireworks? Not only is the environment at risk, but also domestic animals as well as the wildlife indigenous to our region. The value of and need to protect the fynbos biosphere is well documented and widely recognised. It is pleasing to note that reactive efforts are being made by the OM to address antisocial behaviour during New Year’s Eve celebrations. However, little appears to be done proactively to protect and promote the economic, physical and emotional well-being and interests of the majority of ratepayers as well as other living creatures in our region. The eradication of highly flammable invasive alien vegetation especially is an example of a proactive strategy (deserving of a high priority) to limit veldfires. Authorities suggest that the constitutional rights of individuals will

be infringed by the complete banning of fireworks and therefore cannot be considered. In the absence of a referendum for Overstrand residents, and given the massive threat that veldfires pose to our region, public opinion needs to be investigated. Policies which recognise and promote the “common good” more so than individual rights, should shape legislation. Introducing bylaws to ban the use of fireworks in the Overstrand where the local economy is highly dependent on our natural environment, will also constitute appropriate proactive action. I, and many others, would be interested in comment from OM officials, perhaps the legal advisors.

DR MIKE WEEKES VERMONT

Comment from the Overstrand Municipality: Our Fire Safety Department and specifically our plot clearing section do regular inspections and respond to complaints received by the public regarding overgrown erfs and land. If found that it is a fire hazard, a notice is sent out to the landowner to clean the property within 28 days. If not, we send in the appointed contractor and charge the landowner. Regarding aliens, we normally refer this matter to our Environmental Department. If they cannot assist, we normally contact the Overberg Fire Protection Association (OFPA) and sometimes also make use of Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF). DAFF will then is-

‘Dogs are forming packs, hunt at night’ Early on Saturday morning 10 January, I was driving along the R43 and near the Swartdam intersection I spotted a pack of eight large unaccompanied dogs coming out of the mountain nature reserve and heading down towards Zwelihle. These dogs were obviously hunting during the night and probably do this on a regular basis now that they have mastered the art of pack hunting. It would be preposterous to believe that any wildlife would survive for long if this practice is allowed to continue. The authorities should be made

aware that hunting is taking place at night and do something about it. Furthermore a drive through Zwelihle during the day, is a real eye opener, as one is likely to see dozens of dogs just wandering around and scavenging on the streets. There appears to be absolutely no control and this is where the trouble stems from, as these dogs are forming packs and hunting at night. I hope that something is done urgently as it will soon be ‘good bye’ to any wildlife if allowed to continue.

RODNEY HENWOOD VERMONT

sue a directive from their side to the landowner. Regarding permission to set off fireworks, applicants must apply at the area manager’s office and after approval or consideration from the area manager, he will refer them to the Fire Department who will do an inspection for final approval. This process will also include and set special conditions such as informing SAPS, neighbours, animal welfare, media release in local newspapers, notice boards etc. The use of fireworks is regulated by Chapter 10 of the Overstrand fire safety bylaw which states that no person shall, except for the provisions of section 56, discharge fireworks within the area of jurisdiction of the municipality. Chapter 10 further states that no person shall be guilty of discharging fireworks if he has discharged fireworks for a purpose and at a time and place approved by the chief fire officer. It must be remembered that these provisions went through a public participation process, and were adopted and promulgated as legislation in the Government Gazette. The enforcement of the bylaw will always be a challenge as it would remain impossible to “patrol” each area on a continuous basis. Furthermore, the discharging of fireworks is a quick action and the necessary proof can easily be destroyed. The public can assist the municipality by being vigilant and reporting any such occurrences immediately.

) Eleonora Matthey: Someone shoots a mother baboon with a small baby clinging to her. So disgusted. ) Emilia Knight: Find this person and prosecute them.

Ek en my dogter is al vele kere in my eie woning deur so ’n mannetjie aangeval. Dis sad. ) Eleonora Matthey: Take out the bullet and send it off for forensic or fingerprint analysis. Dis meters van my venster af gewees! Lees ook brief op bladsy 10.

Rotary gives Sparklekids a welcome boost KERRY VAN RENSBURG Young people from the Overstrand who are part of the Sparklekids initiative, are the beneficiaries of a substantial donation that was presented by the Hermanus Rotary Club to Theo and Angie Krynauw, founders and managers of the organisation. The donation was made possible because Johan Kriegler, director and organiser of the Wines 2 Whales mountain bike events, donated a large amount of money to the Rotary Club of Hermanus, and they in turn were able contribute R25 000 to the Sparklekids programme. The Rotary Club of Arbroath in Scotland also donated R16 000 to Sparklekids. Bruce Currie from the Arbroath Club, who handed over the money to the Krynauws, donated a further R6 000 in his per-

sonal capacity. He walked 760 km from the border with England North to the top of the Scottish mainland north of Scotland in wind and rain to raise this portion of money for Sparklekids. Theo says the local branch of Rotary handed the cheque to them in December including the funds that Currie raised. “Rotary, and Currie said they liked the ‘No fuss, get to the point, result driven and hands on’ approach of Sparklekids,” he says Sparklekids is a youth upliftment programme which aims to help young people of all races to get from poverty to self support in the shortest time possible. “We have been doing this for nearly four years. We help them with registration fees for their courses, as well as registration for accommodation at tertiary education institutions,” explains

Krynauw. “In some cases, we also help young people with their entire course fees, circumstances permitting. Sparklekids has no office and no salaries, so all the funds go towards the purpose intended – investing in education for young people with potential.” For the past three years, Sparklekids has also helped pay for tutors who come from Cape Town for weekend and vacation workshops organised by Nkosilungile Lolwana, principal of Qhayiya Secondary School, to help the Gr 12 learners improve their matric results. Krynauw says this is an ongoing project that has been of great help to Lolwana and his staff. For more information about Sparklekids, take a look at their DVD on the website: www.sparklekids.co.za.

ANC OFFICIALS CONVERGE ON HERMANUS: The ANC National Chairperson, Baleka Mbete (cen tre), member of the ANC National Executive Commit tee, addressed a minirally held at the Zwelihle Community Hall on Thursday 8 January. Before pro ceeding to the packed hall, she conducted a doorto door mobilisation campaign in Zwelihle. On her ar rival at the hall, where numerous high profile ANC NEC members and ministers were in attendance, Mbete spent a few minutes responding to questions from local media role players. Making sure they were in the frame with Mbete were wellknown lo cal personalities, Fiki Gxamesi (left) and Lettie Gwat yu (right). The purpose of the delegation was to mo bilise support for the ANC’s 103rd anniversary cele bration, which was held at the Cape Town Stadium on Saturday 10 January. Themba Tebele, ANC regional secretary for the Overberg, confirmed that the ANC National Office paid for 59 buses, including 48 minibuses, to transport supporters from the Over berg to the Cape Town Stadium on Saturday. Boys will be boys, but who will teach them how to be men?

JANHENDRIK COETZER

Voëlklip resident Anthony van Hoogstraten is a staunch supporter of the Annual Hermanus Camp for boys (scouts), and his son and now his grandson are carrying on the family tradition of attending this camp. Van Hoogstraten attended the camp back in 1958, his son Mark in the early 80s, while his grandson Alexander is attending it this year. This year marks the 108th camp, held over a two-week period from 4-17 January. Now chairman, Van Hoogstraten says that the Annual Hermanus Camp is a life changing experience. “The camp meant everything to me. You are never the same again after attending. It made me who I am today.” The camp is a summer camping adventure for boys between the ages of 11-15, and based on scouting traditions with a Christian ethos. Camp Commandant, Murray Bridgman says besides teaching the boys outdoor skills, the aim is also to build self-confidence and to develop physically, socially and spiritually through a variety of outdoor activities including sailing, canoeing, abseiling, games, archery and over-night hiking. “Boys will be boys, but who will teach them to be men? Boys who attend come from all over, and it’s usually family members who enter them. Either the father, grandfather or uncle did the same camp years ago. “ We teach them how to survive in the outdoors, how to make shelters, how to make a proper fire and how to cook a meal. Like tonight for instance, we are going to teach them how to properly prepare a fillet steak.” Trophies are awarded for a variety of competitions and the winners’ names are engraved on them. “Some of these trophies date back to the beginning of the camp more than a century ago. The categories in which the boys compete are beach cricket (puddox), tent inspection, two-day hiking expedition, camp concert, canoe race and tug-of-war, smooth running of the camp, flag raising, archery, best camp spirit and the overall Victor Ludorum.” On the day of the Hermanus Times’ visit, Robert Atkins, who now lives in England and attended in the early 80s, made a surprise visit to the campsite. He couldn’t believe how well the traditions have withstood the test of time. “The campsite and all the activities and competitions have stayed exactly the same. Over the years I told my girlfriend, she’s from California in the USA, all about this camp and how it changed me as a youngster.

I brought her here today to see the set-up. As a boy this camp was a real eye-opener for me. It taught me about skills, survival, how to work in a team, how to lead and how to follow, manners, respect, loyalty and discipline. “All the elements you need to live by in order to be successful one day.” Bridgman sums the experience up: “Perhaps most important of all is that boys form strong and meaningful friendships that last years after camping days have passed. Our alumni tells us these friendships are the most significant and enduring part of their camp experience.” The Camp is a non-profit organisation, managed by a volunteer committee of former Campers. The Camp accepts a maximum of 42 boys between the ages of 1115 each summer. Additionally, 16 junior leaders (“BackStreeters”, aged 16-20) are recruited from returning campers, who help the core of adult “Main-Streeters” organise and lead the Camp. On site is also an experienced chef as well as a medical tent staffed by trained first-aiders for treating any minor ailments and injuries. ) Enquiries can be emailed to annualhermanuscamp@gmail.com or visit www.hermanuscamp.co.za for more info.

NATURE MATTERS: Did you know... The African Black Oystercatcher is found only on the coasts of South Afri ca and Namibia. They feed mainly on mussels and limpets. The birds mate for life. They breed once a year and gen erally lay two stonycoloured eggs in a simple nest on sand or rocks. During the breeding period, the parents, eggs and chicks are vulnerable to natural predators as well as to humans and dogs using the beaches in summer.

Plus c’est la même chose…but the one other constant apart from change has been the return to winning ways of the Ex-Used-HouseSalesman who completed the double with his impression of a London bus – you don’t see one for ages then two come along at once. Cruiser Thomas participated in his last DOGS game for 9 months, dressed suitably in (very) shocking pink for the

Golf roundup with Julian Shaw pool paid to 45 points. The best player of the day on a great nett 65 was a real gem, John Reynell. Our Jackpot was won by Kevin Middleton. Saturday: We had a full field of 180 players and some exceptional golf were being played. Winning the red course on 49 points were John Makin son and Marius Kleynhans. (I think the new clubs definitely helped there.) Tak ing the top position on the green course on a brilliant 50 points were Sue Atkin son and Jacquie Rathfelder and win

ning the blue course on 48 points were Gys Steyn and Fanie de Jäger. Best play of the day: The best play of the day was Don Slade with a nett 64. This translates into a gross 77 which means Don beat his age by 4 strokes. This is a major feat of golfing ability – not many people would man age this. Talking about other great games on Saturday, Jacques Retief managed a gross 69, which is definitely one of the best scores ever recorded on our course. The ball pool paid to 47 and al though we had quite a few two clubs, Mirium Squires managed to scoop the pool with another hole in one on the fourth hole, her second on that hole. Until next week keep calm and go golfing.

Leerfish, kob, elf and geelbek keep shore anglers busy Now that most of the up-country visitors have started to leave, there is a little more space on the beaches for anglers fishing in the evenings.

Nellie Jacobs, Mark Greig, Peter Stuart and Valerian van der Byl in hot pursuit of the ball.

POLO: FIRST GAME OF THE SEASON

Hermanus vs Bot River

Andrew Stuart with Piglet, the roving piggy bank, who raises funds for the Hermanus Animal Welfare Society, and also ‘attended’ the event.

The first polo game of the season was played at the Maremmana Polo and Country Club, in the Bot River Valley last Saturday. This was also an ideal opportunity for the younger ponies to participate in their very first game of twoa-side. Six chukkas of seven minutes were played. Playing for team Old Harbour Brewery (Hermanus’s first local brewery), were Valerian van der Byl of Fairfield Farm, Napier and Nellie Jacobs of the Berkshire Polo Club in England. “Nellie was the star of the day, showing great control of the younger ponies and accurate goal shooting. Valerian displayed a high degree of skill with the ball and their win over Maremmana was well deserved”, said Peter Stuart, developer of the Maremmana Polo Estate and founder of Cartierra Wines. The Maremmana team of Mark Greig from Cape Town Polo Club and An-

drew Stuart put in a late surge of goals in the last chukka to finish the game at 12 - 90 up. The day proved to be wonderful for a family outing, with the clubhouse set amongst vineyards overlooking the Babilonstoren and Kogelberg mountains and several braai fires going. The polo action on the day was rounded off by a couple of friendly games of boule. Piglet, a pink piggy-bank, who eagerly raises funds for the Hermanus Animal Welfare Society, also “attended” the event and is grateful for all the donations received. Special thanks, much gratitude and appreciation go to Sue and Peter Stuart for inviting him and for their sizeable donation. The Polo Club is active from December to April each year on Saturday afternoons. - MICHELLE GRADIDGE

The south-easter that blows at this time of the year tends to bring the kob closer to the reefs and shore, making shore-angling a little easier. On Saturday evening Willem de Jongh and his son had their quotas of kob of between 1 - 2kg on Blakes Beach after sunset. Johan Uys and Danie Roland also bagged a number of kob between 1,5 kg and 2kg just behind Blake’s Island, using good quality fresh pilchards. Hennie Beukes fishing off the Bioscope rocks also caught five kob, just size, and up to 2kg. On Saturday the Pearly Beach Rock and Surf Angling Club held their first monthly competition. Sixty anglers participated but only 19 fish were weighed while a number of smaller fish were also released. In first place was Deon Strydom with two kob with a total weight of 14,7kg. Barry Muller was second with two kob with a total weight of 9,4 kg and third was Hannes Smuts, also with two kob with a total weight of 9 kg. Riaan Steyn was fourth with one kob of 15kg. Club spokesman Ferdi Joubert reported that there were quite a number of smaller kob caught at Die Dam area. The smaller local boats and kayaks fishing in the Strandpoort and surrounding areas had their quotas of kob, elf and the odd geelbek.

Local boatman Manie Swart and crew fishing in Hangklip Bay on Thursday reported excellent catches of geelbek and kob, some in the 8kg class. News from well-known charter boat angler Alan du Plessis was that there are still plenty of tunny in the Canyon area. Skippers on the big professional vessels reported that the sea was too rough during the weekend for local boats to venture out. Alan said there were superb catches of yellowtail reported at Struisbaai from the 12 Mile and 40 Mile Alpha banks. Anglers interested in hiring a charter boat to catch marlin, yellowtail and bankfish are reminded that Alan will be spending the next two months in Struisbaai, where he can be contacted on 083 4532 808. Remember that the prosects for fishing for geelbek at the Hangklip and Rooi Els areas from small boats and from the shore with the southeaster could be fruitful. Anglers wanting to buy the new popular larger fixed-spool reels (coffee grinders) should take care and do a bit of homework before making an uninformed purchase. Knowledgeable anglers and local tackle dealers recommend the betterknown brands such as the Shimano Steller Range e.g. models 8 and 10. This range has spares readily available. Full quotas of geelbek (up to 6 kg) and kob (up to 8 kg) were caught in Hangklip bay recently by Strand boat anglers (from left) Manie Swart, Hanno Swart and well known Strand fisher man Bennie (Tale) Swart. Bennie is the brother of the legendary commercial fish erman Tone (Anthony) de Wit who drowned tragically in Kleinmond in 2013 after their boat capsized.
