Dit spook by my!”
“Hy was ’n saggeaarde en emosionele man, ’n gesinsman.” Silino se ander passie was sy beroep. Hy was baie lief vir die see,” sê Angel.
Mall expert says time is right for a shopping centre JANHENDRIK COETZER As an introduction to “Supermarket Wars”, whereby five managers from different supermarkets will address U3A members over a five-week period, starting on 28 October, supermarket and shopping mall expert, Doug Parker, spoke at the municipal auditorium last week. Parker, who is a resident of Hermanus and who retired in 2011, is regarded as one of the foremost experts on the study of the development and feasibility of shopping malls and tourist facilities. Since 1980, he has conducted feasibility studies for most major shopping centres in South Africa as well as other shopping malls in 29 different countries. According to Parker the time is right for a shopping centre in greater Hermanus. “People spend more money on food, groceries and clothing than on anything else. Although Hermanus is a relatively low in-
come town, people still want the best quality and service at the right price.” Parker says that, as an example, Hermanus needs the things that a store like Game sells. “We need more furniture, appliances and fashion. Our Edgars and Woolworths, to name a few, are too small. To have a store like Game would be a major drawcard. We will then also attract shoppers from places like Bredasdorp, Caledon and Napier.” According to Parker there is also a huge lack of customer loyalty. “People shop everywhere, not just at one store. If you for instance put some of the stores in the industrial area under one roof in a shopping centre, you increase the dwell time which also increases shopping.” “Hermanus is a nice and modern little town, people must realise that it’s not a small fishing village anymore,” he concluded.

Nuus News
16 October, 2014
“Dié vismeelfabriek is reeds in 1962 begin.

Mixed feelings around construction at new mosque ELBÉ VAN HEERDEN The new mosque in Main Road has been undergoing several upgrades and, according to a member of the congregation, should be completed in November this year. The mosque, known as the Ismael Ebrahim Islamic Centre, opened its doors two years ago and has since undergone several upgrades. The mosque is located in Main Road, in the building which previously housed the Living Waters Church. Mahmood Malik, a local businessman and member of the congregation, said they are currently using a section of the mosque for prayers while the building is in progress. “We started the upgrades about 10 months ago and it should be completed in November. Building has been hampered throughout winter because of bad weather.” The upgrades include the refurbishing of a house on the premises for the Imam, a new parking area next to the church as well as a minaret and a new ablutions block. “We are currently using the piece of land across the road from the mosque for parking while the building is in progress, but we don’t want to disturb traffic, so this land will be used as overflow parking when the project is completed.” According to Stephen Muller, the director of infrastructure and planning at the Over-
The mosque in Main Road is currently under construction and should be completed in No vember. PHOTO: ELBÉ VAN HEERDEN strand Municipality, all the plans for the mosque are in place. “The mosque is located on an erf zoned for community Zone 1, with a primary right of a place of public worship. The first church (on the premises) was the Afrikaans Pentecostal Church during the late 1980s and later The Living Water Church. “The mosque’s building plans comply with the zoning scheme regulations in terms of parking requirements. The parking on site is more than is required by the scheme regulations. “The extension of the existing building is to accommodate the ablution area for both women and men and a new wheelchair-friend-
ly bathroom as well as internal amendments. “A minaret is part of the approved building plan and all issues relating to the mosque, including wheelchair access, parking and ramps, were addressed during the building plan process.” The mosque will not be making use of a speaker system for calls to prayer and should therefore not cause disturbance to the surrounding residential area. A neighbouring guest house owner, John Terras from Aloe Guesthouse, is however getting worried about the delays in the construction process. “They have been building for a long time
5
now. As far as my knowledge goes, it was supposed to be completed already. Another problem we are experiencing is the constant traffic, with some vehicles parking right in our driveway. “They start grinding at 08:00 in the morning right when our guests are having breakfast. The dust has become so bad that we haven’t been able to use our washing line. “We really have no problem with the placement of the mosque, and their activities should not be more intrusive than any other church, but shouldn’t there be a time period to finish a building project?” Municipal building inspector, Jonty Abrahams, says there is no time limit when a building project is under way. “The law determines that building must be started within a year after the plans have been approved. Thus the construction based on a plan that was approved on 10 October 2014, must be started by 10 October 2015. “If not, the plans will lapse. As long as the building is under way, the owner is within the law.”

– SSMA/Fanie Krige

Enter for Mission Blue Hope Cyclists and motorists alike must abide by the law Spots writing competition JANHENDRIK COETZER The Cape Whale Coast will be officially launched as one of six Mission Blue Hope Spots in December, and as part of the build-up and creating awareness, they are holding a writing competition for learners. The writing competition is open to all learners in the Overstrand between the ages of 1118 years, essays can be written in English, Afrikaans or Xhosa and must be no longer than 1 500 words.
) To enter: Submit your essay in pdf-format by no later than 10 November to info@sharkconservancy.org. Remember to include your name, contact number and age when submitting your essay. Alternatively, drop your submission at the Hermanus Tourism Office for attention Celeste Scheepers. Entry is free. Essays entered into the competition will be judged by a panel comprised of Cape Whale Coast Hope Spot committee members. On 6 December Dr Sylvia Earle, a world renowned marine conservationist and National Geographic explorer, will visit the Overstrand to officially launch the Cape Whale Coast Hope Spot. The other Hope Spots in South Africa include Aliwal Shoal in KwaZulu-Natal, Algoa Bay, Plettenberg Bay, Knysna and False Bay.
Oceans cover 70% of the earth’s surface and represent the largest habitat on the planet according the Mission Blue Hope Spot Initiative. Therefore, communities living in the Overstrand are intimately connected to the ocean to provide sustenance, employment, recreation and spiritual well-being. Yet the very oceans on which we are so dependent, are threatened. Back ground to Hope Spots: Hope Spots are special conservation areas that are critical to the health of the ocean. Some of these Hope Spots are already formally protected, while others still need protection. About 12% of the land around the world is now under some form of protection, while less than 3% of the ocean is protected in any way. Networks of Hope Spots maintain biodiversity, provide a carbon sink, generate life-giving oxygen, preserve critical habitat and allow low-impact activities like eco-tourism to thrive. By engaging governments, businesses, schools, research organisations, universities, civil society and the media, Mission Blue hopes to effect significant changes so that future generations can thrive on a healthy planet, with a healthy ocean.
“I look at the road through the eyes of a cyclist, although I used to drive my car like any other motorist and used to want to crucify cyclists, but since then I have adjusted my opinion a lot.” These are the words of cycling enthusiast and coordinator of the Hermanus Cyclist Club, Jacqui Jackson, following last week’s article (“Boere raadop met ‘onverantwoordelike fietsryers”, HT, 9 October) regarding cyclists who do not keep to the rules of the road. She changed her view when she started cycling in December 2012. “I admit that some cyclists do contravene the law, but it has to be asked: Did the motorist take the photograph, taking his hands off his steering wheel, which is also in contravention of the law? There are many motorists, including a taxi earlier this week (full of learners), talking on his cellphone and putting their lives at risk and those motorists driving with their dogs on their laps, which do not keep to the traffic laws. There are many examples that I can mention where motorists put other road users at risk. “Earlier this week we were cycling on the Karwyderskraal Road and while we were wearing bright yellow cycling gear and kept to the laws of the road, we had to pull off at one stage to wait for the passing bakkies, who have no mercy for other road users. Like the driver of the bakkie on Sunday at the Fisherhaven bend who ignored the 1 m rule and nearly knocked us into a ditch.” According to the Safety of Cyclists Regulation (Government Gazette, 20 November 2013) motorists have to take
care while passing a cyclist, leave a distance of at least one metre between the motor vehicle and cyclist and maintain that distance from the cyclist until safely clear. It is however, the duty of cyclists to keep as close as possible to the left edge of the roadway and obey road traffic signs and rules implemented according to national regulations. Cyclists must also fit and use front and rear lights when riding in the dark or conditions with limited visibility. The regulation further states that cyclists may not ride on the right-hand side of a motor vehicle proceeding in the same direction, unless when passing that vehicle or turning right at an intersection. “A person may not ride a cycle on a roadway abreast of another cyclist proceeding in the same direction, except when passing that cyclist.” The law further states that cyclists may not ride while wearing a headset, headphones or any listening device (other than a hearing aid) or carry another person on the cycle, unless the cycle is specifically equipped to carry more than one person. “Any person who contravenes or fails to comply with any provision of these regulations commits an offence, and on conviction is liable to a fine or to imprisonment of a period not exceeding one year.” Jackson says it is easy to point fingers at cyclists, who are mostly the minority, but if all road users, motorists, cyclists or pedestrians (including runners) abide by the law, the road will be much safer for everyone. “The road isn’t only for motorists,” she adds.

Wanneer jy see toe gaan, is konstante toesig oor jou kinders van kardinale be lang.
ABERDEEN STREET WALK: On 6 October twentyodd keen history enthusiasts braved the rain and cold to discover the legacy of Aberdeen Street in the Hermanus CBD, researched and presented by Angela Heslop with the assistance of Corrie Smit. The walking tour covered the social events of the time, the houses and their occupants situated on both sides of Aberdeen Street from the offices of the Hermanus Times to its junction with Mitchell Street. There was a collection of photos of personalities as well as artefacts of a by gone era, including penny sweets, bars of soap wrapped in newspaper and an enamel container with which residents could fetch their “take away” suppers at local boarding houses, which created a feel of the past. Many participants on the walk whose parents or grandparents had lived on the street, also shared stories and memories of living in or visiting the street. PHOTO: ELSABE BRINK
All we ask is consideration from motorists My letter is not to shoot down your article (HT 09/10) - the cyclist in the photo is clearly well into the path of motorists, but rather to put our side across. Many people do not realise the effect passing motorists, trucks in particular, have on the cyclist. When a vehicle passes a cyclist at speeds in excess of 70 km/h, much less for trucks, the cyclist gets pulled into the road by the vacuum of the passing vehicles’ slipstream, even more so when there are cross winds. Hence the 1 metre passing law, but many motorists fail to observe this, either through ignorance, a “don’t-care-get-outof-my-way” attitude or, as is clear in the photo, through lack of space on our narrow country roads. Many roads have no shoulder and/or yellow line for the cyclist to ride in and road cyclists cannot ride off the tar with their skinny tyres. Many areas of road do not even have rideable space alongside the tar for even the off-road mountain biker to ride on. Hence many cyclists do ride single file, teetering on the edge of the tar, where being a smaller target they are less visible from behind. Some riders feel a sense of protective-
ness towards, especially female, partners and will purposely elect to ride next to their partner on the road side, thereby increasing the visible size of the group to motorists approaching from the rear. I personally have had occasions where motorists have not given enough space even on a wide open road with no oncoming traffic, so that I have had to “dive” for the bushes with my bike! The road between Hermanus and Gansbaai has zero shoulder or yellow line for cyclists or pedestrians. The road between Stanford and Riviersonderend has a yellow line painted right on the edge of the narrow tar with zero shoulder. The Hemel en Aarde Road has barely a hand’s breadth of a shoulder. Cycling is one of, if not THE fastest growing sport in the country, but our roads were not designed with the future cyclist in mind. All we ask is safe access to the roads and consideration from motorists. Please slow down and give us as wide a berth as possible. There are, and will always be, those who do not care, cyclist and motorist alike, but please bear in mind we are not all hooligans, just as you are not all dangerous drivers.

Beware of Alsations I would like to warn all dog owners who walk their dogs on the cliff path, that there are two Alsatians not on a lead that are attacking dogs. One Schnauzer has already landed at the vet. Only after hitting the Alsatians that were attacking my dog (Benji), with a lead, did the owners get hold of them and then proceeded to tell me to move on! What a cheek. I stayed there until they put their dogs on a lead, but I am furious with myself for not asking their name. One of the lady guards witnessed all this and as I told her this is the type of situation that must be reported to the police. Please dog lovers... be careful.
LYNDE PEROLD
What is catching our chickens? After our chickens were caught by an unknown type of cat, we have had some calls from readers with various suggestions and possibilities. We reinforced the chicken run with cement blocks around to keep our beautiful white rooster and his three hens safe, but alas, last Thursday this whatever dug underneath the blocks and took the rooster out, leaving only his two feet as a memento for us. We dug deep trenches and filled it with cement to make it catproof. Last night we heard a commotion again, but were too late to see what it was. My neighbour, however, saw a Cape Otter running away. Is this possible? In this week’s Hermanus Times (09/10/2014) “Be aware of Cape Clawless Otters” you had an article on the Cape clawless otter. If he is clawless, how can he dig a hole under the fence and if he does catch chickens, will it be a good idea to put a sign to allow him to cross the road, the same as a sign for the chickens? It is all very confusing. My wife is sure she saw a mongoose the other evening. Can it kill chickens? Does any one of your readers have some explanation for all this, and also perhaps a nice large rooster for us and also maybe a dog that is used to a life with chickens and two white rabbits?

Chicken crossing to help stop fowl carnage So, you thought the chicken crossing in Onrus would never happen. Well, it has. You probably think a zebra crossing for chickens is too far out a concept, but let me explain. Our locals are all nice people and have always waited patiently for the chickens to cross the road, but the vis-
itors - the aliens - who rush into Hermanus in such a great hurry to experience our tranquillity and all the delicious extras of the Overberg, they stop for nothing. Not for hens and chickens scurrying across the road, not even for the cock who struts his stuff at his own pace. A zebra crossing
may just give visiting motorists pause to think for a moment and save the life, (even if only temporarily) of some hapless chicken whose ultimate fate is to end up plucked, stuffed and on someone’s dinner plate.

Camphill School Hermanus recently announced that Dr Matthi Theron has resigned from his position as principal at the school. Theron told the Camphill school board that his decision was influenced by a number of factors, including his age, health and the daily commute from Betty’s Bay to Hermanus. According to Geoffrey Weir, chairman of the Camp-hill School Board, Theron made a substantial contribution during his time as principal. “On behalf of the board and the entire school, I want to express our most sincere gratitude and thanks, in particular those early days back in 2011 when the school faced much uncertainty and many difficult challenges.” Pending the appointment of a new

Although cooler temperatures can be expected after nightfall, the colder weather has, for now, made way for summer. Warm temperatures of up to 22 °C can be expected this weekend, with Sunday only partly cloudy.

Grotto Beach, Kleinmond and Hawston once again received Blue Flag status for the 2014–2015 season which officially opens on 1 December. Overstrand Municipality’s deputy mayor, Councillor Rudolph Smith, Leon Steyn, environmental specialist at the Overstrand Municipality and Lauren Rainbird, Overstrand horticulturalist, attended the ceremony held by WESSA (the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa) in Knysa on 7 October where they received three awards on behalf of the Overstrand. The Overstrand Municipality receives a grant of R14,5 million over a two year cycle from the Department of Environmental Affairs’ “Working for the Coast”, to successfully operate and upgrade the three Blue Flag Beaches which also create jobs for more than a 175 people each year. Blue Flag is the prestigious, voluntary eco-label for beaches, marinas and boats that is recognised as a trusted symbol of quality and regarded by the World Tourism Organisation as the most well-known eco-label globally. New and Used car pros and cons Finance from Absa when you buying a new car
Absa has years of experience in vehicle and asset finance. We understand how exciting buying a new car can be and provide you with personalised car finance to suit your needs. We all have different tastes in cars depending on who we are, where we are in our lives, and what we can afford.Just as we don’t have all the same taste,we don’t have the same finance needs either – which is why we have vehicle finance tailor-made solutions. Generally, buying a car falls into two categories:new or used, both viable options, each with their own pros and cons.
• Resale value – depreciation is usually a good reason to buy used instead of new • You can purchase a used vehicle that has been quality checked and certified by a dealer • Buying a“barely used”or“demo”vehicle is another viable option – the car is like-new but more reasonably priced and can often include a warranty and maintenance plan.
Cons
• A new car has the latest gadgets, safety features and latest technology • Freedom of choice – you can consider a variety of vehicles with a number of added extras • You can test drive before purchase and you will be the first one to drive your new car • You know that there is no history in terms of missed services or accidents
• Buying a used car can end up costing you more than a new vehicle if there are maintenance costs involved that are not covered by a maintenance plan • A previously owned vehicle means you don’t know how well it has been looked after • The car will require maintenance and possibly expensive repairs far sooner than a new one • Used car repairs are probably not covered by a warranty • Available features are limited or lacking • Maintenance plans for used cars can be costly
Cons of buying a new car
Check out the car’s background
Pros of buying a new car
• It is considerably more expensive than buying a used car • New cars lose their value so resale value should be considered • Buying a new car represents a major investment and a big financial commitment • Even though there is no history of maintenance to consider, there are other factory flaws that you may not be aware of
Finance from Absa when buying a used car
When it comes to buying a car, there are many factors that influence your decision, such as the type of car,the budget available and whether the car is new or used. When purchasing a used vehicle there is generally more to consider than when you buy a new car. This includes mileage, previous service history and any damage the car may have incurred.Whether you choose to get your used car from a dealership or opt for private vehicle finance,Absa is here to assist you every step of the way.We focus on making the vehicle financing process as easy and hassle free as possible. Let us help you navigate the pros and cons of buying a used car from start to finish
Pros
• Buying a used car is great for a tight budget • It is generally more affordable than a new car • You get more features for the money you invest
Always make sure that you research the car’s background as thoroughly as possible. There may be reason that the seller is selling his brand new car for a steal. It’s best to do all the research on the car you want before you apply for vehicle finance. It’s also a good idea to check the handy vehicle finance repayment calculator to get an idea of what your monthly car loan repayments will be.
• Look for a car with a FSH (Full Service History) if possible. This will give you peace of mind that the car has been maintained and looked after • If the car has been in an accident this will often drop the sale price – which is why the seller will often not mention it. • Check theVehicle title docs (NaTIS) and confirm the vehicle is not a code 3 or 4 which usually implies the vehicle is permanently unfit for use. • Take an expert who can see the tell-tale signs of accidents with you when you evaluate the car or consider taking the car to an expert or reputable institution for a thorough check • Compare the odometer reading in the service book with the current reading to make sure that they correspond. • Check theVIN (Vehicle Identification Number) and the engine number as these can be useful when requesting a background check on your car • Inspect the vehicle inside and out and be sure to take a test drive • Consider checking the vehicle police status,to ensure you are not buying a stolen vehicle, using tools and checks available online through products such as Lightstone vehicle verification. • Finance from Absa when you buying a new car

Finmonitor: ABIL a bridge too far African Bank Limited (ABIL) was placed into curatorship on 10 August 2014.
Since then the curator has taken control of all aspects of what used to be African Bank. This drastic intervention by the Minister of Finance was prompted by ABIL’s trading update of August 6, 2014 which left no option but to conclude that despite repeated efforts, which also involved the SA Reserve Bank, African Bank was failing on all parameters believed to constitute a viable bank. The grave and deteriorating situation evolved despite the Registrar of Banks’ ongoing engagement with management and the board of directors since late 2012 to effectively implement measures to address concerns held by the Banking Supervision Department. The sharp price decline of the listed shares in preceding weeks had already signalled a loss of confidence that the ongoing corrective steps were achieving the desired result. The curatorship, in effect, boils down to the following: ) African Bank will continue to grant loans, take deposits and do collections of outstanding loans. ) Retail depositors, representing about 1% of the bank’s creditors, will have full access to their money at the agreed deposit rates and terms in the ordinary course of business. ) African Bank will be split in two parts: a “good” bank with a book value of about R26 billion and “bad loans” of about R17 billion, which will no longer form part of African Bank. ) The “good” bank’s newly established holding company is expected to be listed on the JSE, probably in the first quarter of 2015. It will be recapitalised to the tune of R10 billion, underwritten by the major SA banking groups and the Government Employees Pension Fund. Existing shareholders will be given an opportunity to participate on terms un-
known as yet. ) Wholesale depositors (e.g. money market and income funds) were given the option of 90% of capital and accrued interest being transferred to the “good” bank, which meant a 10% write-off of accumulated book value. ) Until further notice, the payments of interest and withdrawal of capital on these deposits will remain suspended. ) Collection against the “bad” loan book will be strengthened. ) In effect, investors in unit trusts having invested in ABIL debt, will have two types of investments: units in the “good” bank at 90 % of book value preceding curatorship, and units in the “bad” book. It is anticipated that maturities on investments in the “good” bank will be extended by up to 24 additional months. At this point there is no clarity as to the outcome of investments in the “bad” book. The impact of these actions on the private investor has been and will be negative. Investors in listed shares of ABIL have suffered capital losses, will not be receiving dividends for many years even if they do participate in the recapitalisation of the “good” bank, and are locked in as long as the shares are suspended from trading on the JSE, irrespective of whether they are invested directly or via unit trusts. These investors have to take it on the chin as dark clouds have been gathering over ABIL for long which has received much publicity. This highlights the additional risk that equity investors take on in search of higher returns. A more contentious issue is the “losses” suffered by investors in unit trusts – in particular money market or income funds—which had investments in ABIL’s debt instruments. Investors who insist on being invested “risk free” should realise that bank deposits and government retail bonds are the place to be. However, even banks fail, which is highly unlikely but
not impossible, as the Saambou saga reminded us some years ago. Money market funds are generally regarded as “risk free”, and virtually without exception they are, but in ABIL’s case they proved not to be; even the best investment managers are not infallible. The same can be said about income funds. Fact of the matter is investors need to do their homework thoroughly before committing hard-earned savings to any investment. If one is not competent to do one’s own assessment of investment risks, consult an expert. If, indeed, one has consulted and feels that having had to sacrifice 10% of your affected unit trust investment is inappropriate as a result of an incorrect fund selection, you should engage with your adviser. One of the most tried and tested contract law principles is caveat emptor – “let the buyer beware”. Always assume that the “buyer”—in this case you, the “investor”—has less information than what you ideally would wish to have. Hence, go the extra mile to garner all available information to back up your investment decision. Having done that, there is no option but to live with the outcome of one’s decision. Visitors to Whale Festival: figures and feedback JANHENDRIK COETZER Less people visited the Two Oceans Whale Festival this year, albeit by a small margin. Between 3 and 6 October 100 820 people visited the festival and a total of 23 677 cars were counted. Last year there were 112 782 visitors and 28 804 cars. According to the visitors survey, done by varsity students on behalf of the festival committee, local visitors from the Overstrand made up 24% of this figure, Cape Town 38%, elsewhere in the Western Cape 14%, elsewhere in South Africa 12% and overseas 12%. “The trend line clearly shows that there were more local visitors than national visi-
tors,” said festival organiser, Leon Theron. “This can only be attributed to the current economic downturn, where people avoid excessive travel costs. However, the volume of international visitors is quite surprising.” The average visitor experiences were rated as follows: . Organisation – 84,3% . Safety and security – 89% . Quality of event – 85,3% . Atmosphere – 93,5% . Entertainment – 84,8% . Quality of music – 83,3% Some of the comments received: . More food stalls (needed). . It’s much safer.
. Nothing much interesting, look for local musicians next time. . We are overwhelmed by the live bands. . More activities for children (needed). . More entertainment until Monday. . Try to clean your toilets. . More toilets, more stalls and parking a problem. . Fantastic, keep it up. Theron says their focus is to attract visitors to the Overstrand region. “Based on a conservative estimate, at least R30 million was spent during the festival. This takes into account what was spent at local shops, accommodation establishments, in the festival area and at restaurants.”
Comments and feedback for Grotto Beach upgrade ELBÉ VAN HEERDEN The comment period for the amended Basic Assessment Report (BAR) for the development at Grotto Beach and Piet-se-Bos has closed. According to the Overstrand Municipality they have received approximately 30 comments from interested and affected parties in the area. The original proposal included the construction of an amphitheatre at Grotto Beach, which was strongly opposed during a public meeting held on 18 January 2014. An amended BAR has since been released, and although the amphitheatre was noted to be the least preferred alternative, two of the three options still included this as an option. The third option, which would also be the cheapest of the three, included the reinstatement of the ecotone between the old wetland and the milkwood forest, provision for a raised boardwalk for access into the forest, which would contribute to an increase in biodiversity. This option also included the reduction from a double storey to a single storey building where the old Nautilus restaurant used to be. According to Bob Stanway, from the Hermanus Ratepayers Association, they are in complete support of the rehabilitation of the

Hoogenhout responded: “Regarding the amended plans for a restaurant at the old Nautilus site, I agree with other respondents that it is unacceptable to use the loophole of the old site to rebuild within the 100 m high water mark. R200 M annual injection for Hermanus CILENE BEKKER One of the longer serving members of the Hermanus Tourism Bureau management committee has stepped down, with a resulting reshuffle of portfolio holders, and more co-opted members. Bill Harling, treasurer of the Hermanus Tourism Bureau management committee stepped down after a total of ten years of looking after the finances of the bureau. Simultaneously Harling also received the tourism bureau floating trophy in recognition of his service, at the AGM held in the municipal auditorium. Harling is perhaps better known as being the ex-financial guy at SA Breweries who ditched beer for botany and opened Walker Bay nursery 14 years ago. “I never thought, after leaving SAB, that I would find myself in the figures game again,” remarked Harling while delivering his last overview of the latest balance sheet of the bureau. “But after ten years, I have decided to call it a day, and will focus on my passion, the nursery.” The finance portfolio will now fall to Juan Pieterse who has been serving as a co-opted member in the role of accountant.
Blake Albert, who held the marketing portfolio, has moved to the HR portfolio. Geoff Elske was voted in to take over marketing, and Dieter Odendaal to take care of events. This is an additional portfolio for events as this is an area which will be further developed. The current Events and Festival portfolio will continue as is held by Mary Faure. Committee members who were re-elected unchallenged, and their portfolios, are: Galleries: Liz Coates Accommodation: Chris Jonsson Eco-environment: Anina Lee R320 wine-route (and vice chair): Frieda Lloyd Committee members who are entering their second year are: Mary Faure: Events and Festivals, Hamish Hofmeyr: Restaurants and Blake Alberts: HR. Two co-opted members onto the committee are Garth Stroebel (restaurants) and Frans van Rensburg (PR & communications). In her chairperson’s report, Faure referred to an estimate made by Jonsson. According to Jonsson’s estimate, HTB (Hermanus Tourism Bureau) accommodation members alone generate an income of at least R65 million per year. And with the inclusion of non-members, and the rest of the Overstrand, the figure could be as high as R150 million.
“And if you add the contribution of accommodation establishments to the restaurants, via referrals, then that number could increase to around R200 million per year that accommodation members, directly and indirectly, inject into the Hermanus economy,” Jonsson said at the meeting. Added Faure: “His point was that accommodation are in the high tax bracket for water and electricity consumption. Against this background, one can question the sliding scale rate for accommodation establishments.” The AGM ended with contributions by three guest speakers. David Beattie, chairman of the Cliff Path Management group, gave an overview of the Biodiversity Walk/ Park planned on the cliff path section in front of the Windsor Hotel to Gearing’s Point. Pierre de Villiers and Meaghan McCord spoke about the Cape Whale Coast Hope Spot and the Hermanus visit, in December, by marine conservationist, author and diver, Dr Sylvia Earl (HT 4 Sept). Jaco Sieberhagen, who curated and managed the exhibition of sculptures on the cliff path at Gearing’s Point for Hermanus FynArts, said they hope to increase the number of sculptures to 10 or 12 for next year’s FynArts.
The Book Cottage is now Meghan’s baby JANHENDRIK COETZER After having been a business partner with Henrietta Hull for the past two years, Meghan Warren recently bought the remaining 50% share to become the sole owner of The Book Cottage in Harbour Road. Warren has been living in Hermanus for the past 21 years and started working at this bookshop after matriculating. According to Warren they focus mainly on new and current books, but what makes the shop unique is that they believe in the classics. “We also put a big focus on South African and Afrikaans literature and we have a fantastic children’s section. Our motto is ‘A village bookshop with a city selection’, and we try and live up to that every single day and spend hours on ordering. And yes, we
are pet-friendly.” Warren also believes in the importance of friendly ties with the neighbours, in this case, the owners of La Crêperie. The stoep wall, that used to seperate the two shops, have been broken down allowing an unhindered flow of traffic between the two venues. “It was such a dead corner before. Coffee and books go hand in hand and therefore we are happy for the change and are looking forward to a good working relationship.” Besides looking into incorporating new stock items, Warren also has a couple of other ideas up her sleeve. “I would like to host a monthly book club as well as starting a reading initiative for children to grow their love for literature.”

New owner and new name for deli eatery JANHENDRIK COETZER Oskars Delikatessen in Harbour Road has recently undergone new ownership as well as a name change. Roger Weir took over as the new owner about three months ago, and with the take-over, Oskars Delikatessen also changed the name to La Crêperie. According to Weir the new name better suits what they do and also the way in which
they do it. “La Crêperie is French for ‘pancake house’,” Weir explained. “We do all sorts of pancakes, with all forms of different toppings.” “People can expect a whole new cuisine as all the dishes have been modified.” Weir grew up in Europe and did his studies in catering there, after which he obtained his degree in cooking. Experiencing his first ever Whale Festival, he felt that it

was a huge success and good for his business. “I personally found the festival quite amusing. “Seeing so many people it felt good to be amongst them and to participate in this activity. “Besides our new exciting menu and our popular garden at the back, I just want to say to all our customers, come and experience the all new La Crêperie for yourselves, and bon appétit!”

Mitchley, Barbara Liefeldt, and from the Western Cape Education Department, Ellene Louw The Hermanus Youth Art Centre represents three different high schools in the Overstrand/Overberg – Hermanus High, Overberg High and Northcliff House College. The grade 10 to 12 learners at Northcliff House College visited Africa’s first greenest hotel, Hotel Verde, at Cape Town International Airport on Wednesday 1 October. “One reads so much about sustainability and the environment, yet to see a business in operation like Hotel Verde, truly inspired all the learners,” said Vivian Mitchley, principal of Northcliff House College. “Our school has been part of Eco schools and to see art and eco-studies so well amalgamated showed us what can be achieved with vision and passion.” Design, Tourism and Business learners
were shown how the hotel is constructed and how it operates. LED lighting, sustainable hydroponic vegetable gardens, heat source from a geo-thermal field, a grey water plant, and solar panels are some of the hotel’s main eco features. All the art on display in the hotel has been done by learners in the area. Food is also sourced locally. One of the green aspects the learners found to be quite novel is that Hotel Verde’s visitors are encouraged to use equipment (cyclepower) in the gym to help generate electricity.

FFSA Art project in Gansbaai
19
ELBÉ VAN HEERDEN Gansbaai does not offer many opportunities for entertaining the youth, which is the motivation behind an art project by the Football Foundation of South Africa (FFSA), held during the school holidays. Joe Strider, an intern with the FFSA, worked together with renowned artist and photographer, Jared Aufrichtig, to bring the creative workshop and art mural project to Gansbaai. Strider, who studied at NYU was referred to Jared through a mutual friend in New York. Jared, who had recently returned from a similar project in Peru, suggested they do the same for the children of Gansbaai and collaborated to create the workshop. “Joe invited me here to come take pictures of their local projects, but as I had just completed the mural project in Peru, I suggested we do the same here.” They started a campaign to raise funds for the project, collecting $1 400 (about R15 500) to be used for paint and other supplies. The children participated in various creative workshops, with the creation of a wall mural at the New Life Church in Blompark as their final project.

Once the project is complete, the finished mural will not only serve as a beautiful addition to the town of Gansbaai, but will also exist as a

Chelsea Babe will also be at the Cansa Bark For Life event on 25 October.
Join the Cansa Bark For Life Chelsea Babe, born on 1 June 2007, is the darling “child” of local resident and councillor Kari Brice. In 2012 Chelsea was diagnosed with Mast Cell Cancer and chemotherapy was advised, without which she was given six months to a year to live. After the first session she was fine, but then her white cell count was too low for a second session. She was not a happy pup. Kari decided to stop with the chemo and started her on an adapted Budwig Cancer Diet. On Saturday 25 October Chelsea will be wagging her tail at the Cansa Bark For Life being held at the Curro Hermanus sport grounds. Come show some paws and give her a high five for showing so much courage in her fight against cancer. Bring your best friend and take part in a 1,6 km walk, grab a bite to eat and then watch the SAPS K9 Dog Unit perform. Also on offer are informative talks and displays by the South African Guide Dog Association for the Blind, PAT Therapy Dogs and much more. You can also enter your dog in one of the competitions – who knows, you may just be the owner of the best-dressed pooch in the Overstrand. Registration forms are available at the Cansa Office, on the corner of Roos and Douglas Streets, Onrus River, Annique Salon (11 High Street) and the Hermanus Animal Welfare Shop (18 Mitchell Street). Registrations will also take place from 09:00 on the day of the event. Remember, the first 75 registered canines receive a free doggy goodie bag. Phone Maryke Malone on 082 857 4294 or Sheraleen Corbett-Meyer on 082 926 1386.
Puppy classes Bergview Veterinary Clinic is starting puppy classes. The course Early Learning Development 101 will be led by registered veterinary nurse Melani Muller. This course is based on the teachings of the well-known vet and behaviourist, Dr Quixie Sonntag. The age group is 8 to 20 weeks, which is the most critical period of a puppy’s life. This is the time when they are extremely accepting of new situations and experiences. Missing this window of opportunity can lead to a lifetime of fear, anxiety and aggression for some dogs. What your puppy will learn: . Socially acceptable behaviour towards people and dogs. . Confidence in new situations. . To sit, stay, heel, lie down, leave and recall. . Mental stimulation by playing games. . Body awareness, which involves an obstacle course. By achieving this, the puppy-owner bond will be stronger. The owner’s knowledge will increase by a better understanding of how puppies think and what they need. Contact Bergview Veterinary Clinic on 028 312 1390 to sign up and get course times. The course runs for six weeks and costs R300 per puppy. The first five puppies to register will get this course for free. The clinic will offer this course for free for any HAWS puppies adopted.

SMALL CAR: BIG FUN
Hyundai Grand i10 Fluid: the big fun HANJO STIER Today, the Hyundai Grand i10 and I would like to teach you a lesson. Don’t worry; it’s not the hurting kind, rather the opposite – small cars can be fun. The harsh reality is that practicality and price rule when your budget is tighter than two coats of paint but you shouldn’t settle for something cheap ’n nasty. Sure, if we all drove what we desired the roads would be jammed with overheating Ferraris, pink Minis and upturned monster trucks. You could also brave the used car market for an older, bigger, more powerful machine, but its longevity and maintenance may just give you nightmares. Perhaps you’re after a new car that’s not too big, bland or bank-breaking. Starting at R139 900 means the new Hyundai Grand i10 positions itself in one of the most hotly-contested segments of our car market between ultra-compact hatchbacks (think i10, Spark) and regurgitated oldies (Vivo, Figo). There’s nothing terribly wrong with any of these, yet the new Grand i10 appeals on other levels too. Yes, it’s still a small city car, but its dimensions are more generous than baby brother i10. At the same time, it’s R26 000 cheaper than an i20, which sounds vaguely familiar. Yip, you’re looking at the replacement of Hyundai’s beloved Getz. Two of my near and dear ones are proud Getz owners. So proud in fact that one example was lovingly handed
down to a younger family member instead of being traded in while the other owner replies to suggestions of a new car by hissing and frowning vigorously. Why? Because the Getz was a great little car. Nothing special, nor overly exciting. It was easy to drive, very versatile and economical with an inoffensive shape and friendly face. And before I get tethered in more elusive explanations of price or appeal, I’d like to state that the new Hyundai Grand i10 does its ancestor proud. It’s just as good. Next to an i10, the Grand boasts an additional 18 cm length, 65 mm width, 45 mm wheel base, 18 mm ground clearance and 31F boot space. At 256 F, the cargo area is smaller than that of a Getz but the maximum load of 1 200 F is superior to the old Hyundai or i10. Passenger space has also increased. Its interior consists of decent plastics and understated fabric patterns with a few silver highlights and blue displays to liven things up a bit. It’s a pleasant place to be with simple controls and a fuss-free layout. Any Getz owner would approve – if you could get them to calm down, stop hissing and enter a Grand i10. Hyundai South Africa sells this car with two trim levels and a choice of 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic gearbox. All models have alloy wheels, air-con, central locking, CD radio with USB and Aux inputs, Bluetooth, child lock, ABS brakes with EBD, front power windows and power steering. I found the steering slightly vague and rather insistent on returning to the centre position, but that’s the only

critique I could come up with on our higher-spec Fluid test car. Included in this model are remote access, one touch triple-turn indicators, rear power windows and power exterior mirrors. The Grand i10 is only available with one engine, a 1 248 cc four-cylinder petrol worth 66 kW (90hp) or 120 Nm. Forgive me if I was expecting to hang out with motorised chairs and refrigerated lorries all week, but even against a kerb weight of 1 051 kg, that doesn’t sound very encouraging. How wrong I was. This 1.25L engine is a very happy little mill, eagerly pulling forward in traffic and even donating a sprinkling of fun when annoyed. We measured 0–100 km/h in about 11 seconds. The absence of traction or stability control means screeching starts and under-steer are also possible. The Grand i10 possesses a good chassis and high profile tyres set up for ride comfort, while pedal feel is equally amicable. This little Hyundai is also quite frugal, alleging 5.9 F/100km average fuel use from its 43 F tank. Ours floated around seven with mixed driving, indicated by the multi-mode trip computer. Hyundai includes its 5-year/150 000 km warranty and roadside assistance with each Grand i10. At R149 900 for this Fluid Manual model, you’ll find smaller or cheaper alternatives elsewhere, but I felt that this is a good little car which is also fun to drive. Sounds familiar, doesn’t it? Audi S3 sedan: the focused appeal HANJO STIER Did you know that Audi makes more than 30 different cars? Quite a few of them are bigger or topless versions of existing models but if you’re in the market for, say, a four-door sedan, you can pick between six basic configurations, excluding sporty iterations like the S3 sedan I tested last week. So just to clarify: Audi makes a two or four-door hatchback equivalent of the Volkswagen Golf; called A3. The performance version is an S3 and the lunatic special, an RS3 (currently not available). To offer even more choice to discerning customers, they slapped a boot on the A3 / S3 range and made this sedan. Yes, yes, I know what you’re thinking. A Golf with a boot already exists so this is essentially an Audi Jetta. And before anyone points out the super seller Audi A4, I can vouch for the fact that the A3 / S3 sedan is more compact and has its own character, appeal and design. The front is almost indistinguishable from any other modern Audi while the dashboard is straight out of the A3 hatchback. In my humble opinion, it’s the rear end of the car where things get interesting – the boot doesn’t seem slapped on at all and the car’s lines are just exquisite. Clean, taut, muscular and discreet. This is just my observation but the S3 with its understated go-faster bits just looks so much more focused and well-proportioned than some of its curvy competitors. Bespoke to this model are deeper bumpers,
Even more amazing is the S3 sedan’s power train – a 2litre TFSi four cylinder turbopetrol engine (210 kW, 380 Nm) linked to a 7speed dualclutch (DSG) automatic gearbox. PHOTO: QUICKPIC skirts, a thin boot spoiler, shiny trim and mirror covers, 18-inch wheels, mean lights and four exhaust pipes. Its seemingly bullet-proof interior spoils you with sports seats and steering wheel (with shift paddles), climate control, more shiny bits, start/stop system, MMI radio with Bluetooth, rain sensor, Audi Drive Select, progressive steering, Xenon Plus headlights, Isofix anchors and
lots of airbags; to name just a few. Our silver test car featured a few optional extras like navigation, parking aids, leather trim and a panoramic sunroof. Everyone loved the big glass ceiling but I have to caution tall folks that this will encroach into the already-snug dimensions and compromise headroom. Boot size is a decent 390 F while the fuel tank holds 55 F. As you would expect, spending

time in this high-quality cabin is an absolute pleasure which is heightened by the pin-sharp displays, top ergonomics and intelligent infotainment system. The navigation won’t just offer to find a filling station if your fuel level hits reserve, it will also warn of low battery status in Bluetooth’d mobile phones. (210 kW, 380 Nm) linked to a 7-speed dual-clutch (DSG) automatic gearbox. Low-speed response can be sluggish, but this is easily remedied by selecting Sport mode or simply increasing the angle of your right foot. The motor is reasonably quiet at idle and at constant cruising speeds but gives off a lovely deep engine growl and boomy exhaust noises (with up-shift pops) when angered. It gets even more vocal when you employ launch control to hit 100 km/h in five seconds (our GPS beat that by 0,2 seconds); top speed is limited to 250 km/h. So then, performance fans will not be disappointed and they also won’t mind the S3 sedan’s very firm ride. It doesn’t crash or rattle over uneven surfaces but I have to tell you that its damping is hard. Needless to say, that goes hand-in-hand with exceptional grip and phenomenal, Quattro-supported, handling. The flat-bottomed steering wheel is usually quite light in its responses but hardens up in Sport mode to offer meatier feedback. And before you think this car is a gas guzzler, Audi claims average consumption of 7 F/100 km. I did see my average drop below eight with careful driving but a realistic average is 10 F/100 km. To sum up, the Audi S3 sedan is a great-looking, well-equipped, slightly hard and compact family sedan which corners like a house fly and goes like the clappers. The privilege of ownership will set you back R529 500 which also includes a 5-year/100 000 km Audi Freeway plan. Galimoto Media

Toyota SA today announced the introduction of a striking new limited edition version of its best-selling Etios hatch, the Etios Sport. Featuring a comprehensive aero kit comprising a front spoiler, body-coloured side skirts, rear bumper spoiler, roof spoiler and distinctive badging, this special model is designed to appeal to a young, sporty audience. 15-inch alloys round off the extrovert exterior package. The Etios Sport is available in four hues: Sparkling Silver Metallic, Midnight Black, Retro Red Metallic and Super Blue Metallic. Complementing the bespoke look, the cabin benefits from an upgraded tech-enhanced, double din audio system similar to the one fitted to the new Etios Cross. This unit comes with USB and AUX-in ports (as per Etios Xs) but adds extra functionality in the form of Bluetooth to facilitate hands-free mobile phone operation. As with all other variants in the Etios range, the Sport is available with the nippy yet frugal 16-valve DOHC 1.5-litre engine pushing out 66 kW of power @ 5600 rpm and 132 Nm of torque @ 3000 rpm. Other standard features it shares with its Xs sibling include niceties such as colour-coded exterior trim (mirrors and door handles), front fog lights, remote central locking, electric windows all round, air conditioning, power steering, headlamp levelling system, seven cupholders, 13 litre-refrigerated glovebox, door-ajar warning, seatbelt warning, dual front airbags, ABS with EBD and an immobiliser. Priced at just R153 500, the Etios Sport is on sale right now and is limited to just 200 examples. “The Etios has striking exterior details which will certainly get you noticed,” says Kerry Roodt, general manager of marketing communications. “With its distinctive styling, comprehensive specification and affordable pricing, I have no doubt it will be a hit with younger customers. Hurry – stocks are limited!”

Golf roundup The course is recovering well from the hollow tining and the greens staff are working hard to get it back in near perfect condition in a week or so. Tuesday was ladies day with a dreaded medal and putts format. Coming out on top in the group of 17 ladies was Rusty Demmer in the silver division with a super nett 72, and winning the bronze division was Georgie Sym with a nett 68. Best gross this week was Pippa Meyer on 90 and winning the best putts was Chris Ty ley with 30 putts. Whilst talking about the ladies we had Lynne Behagg playing at Royal Cape in the Ladies Interprovincials for Boland, and her team won their division. Wednesday was men’s day with a bet terball medal and coming out top of the pile were two people no strangers to the winners’ circle: the potent pairing of Glynn Davies and Bill McGeachy on a brilliant nett 60. Second place by a single shot was Christo Nel and Hennie Theron.

with Julian Shaw There were only 3 two clubs and no win ners in the jackpot. Saturday saw a full field of 120 players and with an individual stableford, play ing for the Roger Bushell Trophy. I had the pleasure of partnering up with our greens superintendent Malcolm Bromley against a strong partnership of Joe Lyon and Morgan O’Kennedy. What a great day and just to report on current affairs, Malcolm and I are still undefeat ed. Coming out victorious this week and winning the Roger Bushell Trophy was our very own evergreen Tony Runkel, at eighty something he whipped us all with a terrific single minded 43 points – an example to us all. Second place on 42 points and definite ly no stranger to winning was Ray Calitz, and third place also on 42 points was our very own Queen of the Fairways Lee Musgrove. There were 6 two clubs and ball pool paid to 40 points!
Quite a cookoff for the DOGS The DOGS played an individual Stableford competition (log) on 14 October in Kleinmond. The Naked Chef was cooking with gas on a glorious day. He produced the dish of the day with a tasty 41 and, to round things off, put the icing on the cake by winning the weekly sweepstake. The ExPoleDancer got himself into a bit of a stew with his inflight catering – he didn’t cater for his flying clubs getting stuck in a tree. Back on the ground, there was a bakeoff for last place between Cruiser Thomas and Mr. Halifax. Cruiser’s Eton Mess couldn’t compete and Mr. Halifax became the day’s Yorkshire Pudding. RESULTS: 41 Gordon Wilson; 39 Jon Forsyth, Peter Ther on; 35 Dave Smith; 34 Hugh Frangs, Ian Newman; 33 John Cheesbrough, Mannes van Zyl; 32 Mike Graham; 31 John Tunstall; 30 Tony Hackett, Dave Rade; 28 Pat Dewil, Art Rae; 27 Andre Franken; 24 Trevor Vaughan; 22 Peter Thomas, David Naylor. - DAVE SMITH
