Julie 2011 – Junie 2012: Totale insidente – 740 Hoogste insidente vir ’n maand – 119 (Januarie 2012) Gemiddelde per maand – 61,67 Julie 2012 – Junie 2013: Totale insidente – 762 Hoogste insidente vir ’n maand – 112 (Desember 2012) Gemiddelde per maand – 63,5 Julie 2013 – Junie 2014: Totale insidente – 722 Hoogste insidente vir ’n maand – 98 (Desember 2013) Gemiddelde per maand – 60,17 Julie 2014 – Januarie 2015 (slegs 7 maande tydperk): Totale insidente – 467 Hoogste insidente vir ’n maand – 116 (Desember 2014) Gemiddelde per maand – 66,71

LITERARY LANDMARK: The Book Cottage in Harbour Road will soon be moving to new premises. PHOTO: KERRY VAN RENSBURG

High rental forces landmark bookshop to relocate KERRY VAN RENSBURG For the owner of The Book Cottage in Harbour Road, the rental squeeze has become too tight and she is moving out. Meghan Warren, who has been involved with the Book Cottage for many years and sole owner for four months now, is moving her shop to new premises, where she will pay a third of the rent she is currently paying at 10 Harbour Road. “Do you know how many books you have to sell to cover rent alone?,” she exclaims. “And that’s besides salaries, stock and other overheads. I haven’t taken anything home in the past year. I have been putting everything back into the business. And the mark-up on books is not much – about 30% on average. We are a small, independent shop and it’s a tough industry.” The Book Cottage, established by Sue McNaught in 1996, is an institution in Hermanus. Prior to Meghan becoming sole owner, she was in partnership for two years with Hettie Hull and before that worked at

the shop for 11 years. She has not made the decision to move her landmark book shop lightly. “My heart says one thing, but my head another. The financial aspect drove the decision to move, but it’s not the only reason,” she says. The old house, the larger portion which is occupied by The Book Cottage, and shared with Le Creperie and Little Gem, was owned by Harbour Wealth CC until November last year, when they sold the property to Point Break, a Namibian Investment Company. Meghan says the bar for high rentals was set by the previous landlord, and, according to her calculations, she has been paying more per square metre than shops in Cape Town’s Waterfront She says on top of the rent, which went up by an annual 10% in August last year, when Point Break took over, they said no VAT had been included in their rental amount, and in December Meghan and her neighbours had to fork out an extra chunk of money to pay it. Artists share their journeys of healing New and experienced artists shared their work, their scars and their healing at Ell Restaurant on Spookfontein Wine Farm in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley on 12 February. The focus of the evening was on the artist’s personal journeys from pain to healing, and the inspiration and creative expression that inspired each piece. Anthea van der Pluym’s talk had the audience stunned. She still carries the visible scars from the burn wounds inflicted by her own son during a violent attack at their home that left her barely alive and badly injured. Anthea observed that life in South Africa (violent crime, the economy, politics, uncertainty) has the power to break you, and many in society are broken right now. She emphasised our power to make destructive choices, or embrace our vulnerability where we can find our real resources, a new dimension of reality and our true power. Val Hill shared her late husband’s art with the audience and the story of the loss of his

legs to burn wounds, and recovery thereafter. She showed the audience how Max found an outlet for his pain in his oil painting, and also how he found joy and fulfilment. JeandreMariniertoldhowsherediscovered herself as an artist after multiple surgeries to remove a brain tumour, and reconstruction of her jaw after infection. She had time for a lot of personal reflection being forced to rest (away from a successful corporate career in France). Johann Kruger’s photographic work was on display, in vivid colour and black and white mixed media. All the artists thanked Theo Krynauw for hosting and introducing each of the artists, Annamari Storm for organising the exhibition, Ell Restaurant at Spookfontein Wine Farm, Cycle Café, Hamilton Russel, Hemelrand, Raka Wines, and Hermanus Rainbow Trust for their generous contributions that made the evening possible.

The Treasure the Scars event at Ell was an inspirational evening.

As jy my nou enige adres in Onrus of Vermont gee dan sê ek vir jou presies waar dit is.

FOTO: DANIE KEET / EIKESTAD NUUS (MEDIA24)

4 HermanusTimes Know what’s happening in your ’hood 19 February, 2015

KERRY VAN RENSBURG An initial meeting to introduce the Our Hood initiative to the Hermanus community at the end of January, is already yielding dividends. Bruce Good, the founder and developer of this free social networking programme for neighbourhoods, presented the Our Hood concept to the 60 residents, including four councillors and two security firms, who gathered in the De Wet Hall. Our Hood has been described as a new digital platform which can improve both safety and quality of life in communities by providing neigh-

bourhoods with secure, efficient and community building services. This communication tool allows information sharing strictly between residents of neighbourhoods with clear-cut borders, providing a secure means to, among other things, report suspicious activity, organise events and contact your ward councillors directly. Caroline Gabb got the local ball rolling after seeing the Our Hood initiative on Carte Blanche. She says this concept has great potential and is a brilliant networking platform for neighbourhoods. She says Onrus and Vermont are already up and running, Fisherhaven has set up a hood and Hermanus

as well. Sign up to Our Hood (on the internet) by providing your name and physical address. You will be sent a unique code, or a neighbour can verify you online. Once you’ve entered your unique code, you’ll have online access to your hood. You can post notices (an email/sms post-it), contact neighbours, sell things and even pay for your electricity. Gabb says: “About 100 people have signed up, and it is completely free. If there is a crime, there is an immediate alert,” she says. “I really believe OurHood is a very powerful tool for us to build strong neighbourhoods,” adds Gabb.

The Our Hood concept was introduced to residents of Hermanus at the end of January and already over 100 people have signed up for this free neighbourhood networking platform.

Valentine’s Day celebrations The new ballroom at Bona Dea Private Estate in the Hemel-en-Aarde valley was celebrated with flair on 14 February when Overberg residents and guests from far and near were treated to the splendour of this newly renovated venue. Owners Diddi and Robert Johnson introduced their inspiring building to guests and set the scene for many Overberg celebrations to come. Expresso host Leigh-Anne Williams was master of ceremonies, while the five piece gypsy-jazz band Manouche provided rhythm for a swinging party. For starters, oyster and sushi canapés were served with bubbly from Domaine des Dieux and Sumaridge, followed by a threecourse meal prepared by chef Petrie Hendriksz. An elaborate dessert buffet guaranteed that all guests were sweetened up before taking another turn on the dance floor.

HemelenAarde winegrowers help education in the winelands Despite being occupied in the vineyards and cellars of the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley with the latest vintages, a number of winemakers joined forces in Franschhoek this past weekend to help raise R10,5 million for education at the AfrAsia Bank Cape Wine Auction. The Hemel-en-Aarde wineries secured R925 000 for the various educational charities supported by the Cape Wine Auction. Hamilton Russell, Bouchard Finlayson, Creation and the Young Guns of the Walker Bay offered personal experiences where their wines and their company will be enjoyed for the benefit of charity. Honorary chairs of the event, John

and Erica Platter, said that the auction strengthens the bonds of cultural and community unity in the winelands, and the winemakers of Hemel-en-Aarde certainly played a big role in this process. Unique experiences offered at the auction included a vertical tasting with Anthony Hamilton Russell, followed by an interactive cooking demonstration with Olive Hamilton Russell before enjoying a delicious lunch at their private home, Braemar House. The Walker Bay Young Guns, including Peter-Allan Finlayson and Chris Alheit, raised a whopping R340 000 for a unique Hermanus experience. This group of rising wine stars invited bidders to join them in a

barefoot sunset tasting on the beach followed by a hands-on seafood braai at Hemelrand, and a night of revelry under the Hermanus stars. The Martins of Creation teamed up with the Johnson’s of Bona Dea Private Estate to offer seven days for four people in a villa on the beautiful Greek island of Skiathos followed by a five-course meal prepared by Creation’s executive chef, Warwick Taylor, served in the new dining room at Bona Dea on their return. The Bouchard Finlayson contribution was an extensive package that covered the various luxury properties owned by the Tollman family and collectors’ bottles of Pinot Noir. FRIEDA LLOYD

Einde van alle aksie totdat Man Een, voor my in die ry, oplaas by Vrou Een kom. Hy was reeds in die lang ry toe ek aankom. Indien daar nie pen of papier was om ’n nota hieroor op te plak nie, kon óf Vrou Een óf Vrou Twee hul kliënte verbaal gewaarsku het. EDITORIAL COMMENT

Malicious ignition The Overstrand as well as the larger Over berg is a high risk fire area. According to municipalities in these are as fire incidents dealt with to date are high er than for the same period last year. Although warm, dry and windy condi tions play a role, perhaps helping along a burning cigarette butt thrown carelessly out of a window, the main cause is being ascribed to children who start these fires. This has led to the Overberg District Mu nicipality to coin the phrase ‘malicious ig nition’, to describe the cause. One of the reasons behind malicious ig nition is purely for the entertainment value of seeing a fire helicopter or fire trucks in action. As a spokesperson from the Overberg District Municipality says, if you want to see the fire trucks in action, call us and we will give a demonstration. Although info sessions are held at schools to educate the children about the dangers of fires, the Hermanus Times to gether with the municipalities also call on parents to educate children about the ef fects these fires can have on properties and lives. Not to mention putting the municipal budget under further strain.

Fourway stop still an option

Terrein-inspeksies is reeds uitgevoer.

In reference to my letter “Would a four-way stop solve the problem at Bergzicht Street?” as published on page 10 of your paper of 12 February, I would like to express my appreciation for the reply and comments received from Mr Stephen Müller – Director Infrastructure and Planning at the Overstrand Municipality. They are appreciated and they reflect current practice. This open and comprehensive reply is what Hermanus residents expect and what they are entitled to. Thanks, Mr Müller. On the introduction of a four-way stop I would like to point out that Average Daily Traffic (ADT) is only one aspect of the decision making. Anotherveryimportantoneistrafficsafety. If the numbers alone would count, why do we have a four-way stop at Swartdam

Road and Steenbras Street as well as at Bergzicht Street and Schulphoek Road. Certainly the ADTs there are much lower. We have a four-way stop at the Mini Market in Sandbaai and no complaints. I also think that the traffic flow would improve more than “only marginally”. It also needs to be pointed out that during the day traffic often stalls at that intersection and the problem is not exclusively restricted to the peak times in the morning and the afternoon. I would also like to refer Mr Müller to the letter in your same paper (12 February) on page 11 “Vierrigting-stop kan die antwoord wees”, which highlights the same and some other, but relevant issues.

R BEUNINK ONRUS

You must be an angel not having problems Regarding Mr Beunink’s letter about the chaotic traffic problem in Bergzicht Street and the answer from Mr Stephen Müller of the municipality. I had to read Mr Müller’s letter a couple of times to understand his denial of the traffic problem. I have lived in Bergzicht Street for 30 years and I have seen the problem escalate yearly. I have written letters regarding this to the former town councillor and the present one and the answers have remained the same. Over the years two large developments have been developed entering Bergzicht Street on the eastern side and one is busy developing, plus the traffic from the industrial area. On the western side, five developments are fully developed plus two more going up fast plus two schools, Curro and Hermanus Christian Academy. How can Mr Müller state that the problem is for short periods only? From as early as 7 am in the mornings the traffic starts building up, people going to work, dropping children off at schools,

hooters blowing, people shouting at each other, delivery trucks, builders etc. The Main Road has become a race track from both sides of Sandbaai. Sometimes the traffic builds up for 400 metres. I have read somewhere in HT that the road is going to be upgraded, which is only going to solve part of the problem. A four-way stop is the only solution: it is inexpensive, it will let the traffic flow, slow down the traffic in the Main Road , it will stop the accidents on the cross and it will stop drivers cutting corners into Bergzicht Street. The four-way stops in Swartdam Road have solved the problem. It is a pleasure to drive there. Everyone talks about traffic circles, big ones, small ones. If they will just stop to think that at a circle the yield is to the right, the main road traffic has preference – back to square one. The person that wrote some weeks ago that she has no problem with the traffic in Bergzicht Street must be an angel or from another planet.

HANNES STEENKAMP, BERGZICHT ROAD, SANDBAAI

We wish to thank the Manager of Agrimark, Andries Schreuder, and his colleague for their help in getting our new generator up and running. To cut a rather long story short, they went out of their way to make sure that our generator was up and running in preparation for load shedding. A word to the wise: do not believe everything you read in the instructions that come with an appliance made in China.

Development vs conservation and security Having attended presentations by specialists and conservationists such as Professor Orren and Richard Pierce last year at the WCC Green House in Vermont, there is no doubt that our environment suffers dramatically where there is so-called ‘development.’ The question that needs to be answered is who and how accurately are these developments being monitored, both in the planning and implementation stage? Just looking at the Homeowners Constitution/Conduct Rules of some of these developments raises a question. Who is verifying the legality and/or equitability of these applications to the local authority? Priorities: There have been objections about the lack of housing; infrastructure; shopping facilities; parking etc., but what about the safety and security of our community and environment? Signs: One only has to witness the amount of signs, on entering our CBD ,or those of security companies, some that no longer have any relevance. Just drive down any main route in our town and observe whether there are any houses/developments that do not have these signs. However, if you are an estate agent your board may be removed and you may even receive a fine. Establishing priorities requires management skills. Refuse dumping: Note after a public holiday the amount of refuse just thrown from the vehicles along the side of our roads. How many fines were issued during 2014 for these offences or the dumping of builder’s rubble on the empty plot next door? Some NGOs report these activities but do you and if not why not?

11

Noise pollution: What is done to monitor the amount of false alarms of the apparent burglar alarm and sirens that incessantly terrify the neighbours or the extreme noise pollution of the ‘blowers’ used by the garden service that have taken the place of the broom and job creation? Do these blowers that distribute the dirt and weeds not exceed legal limits? Motor cycles that loudly use the R43 as a race track. Are they fined, even for noise pollution? Light pollution: Certain of our suburbs and coastal strips still have extensive green belt areas that attract wildlife but some of us pollute this with our flood lights. Why? Who needs energy. Trespassing and fire prevention: Yes fires are sometimes good for our environment but we should leave this planning to nature. Is enough being done to remove overgrown vegetation and the potential arsonists from our green belt areas and mountain slopes? What did and could the last two fires on the slopes of the ‘Groen Berg’ cost tax payers? Security: Do the statistics released by the SAPS reveal the true picture i.e., do the statistics that are released, now and again, reflect the amount of calls for help that are perhaps registered? No. Why not? Do we know how many parolees patrol our streets or how many rapes, assaults, robberies there are, in fact? No. Several are not reported. Why? Is Law Enforcement not a basic right and essential service required by our community? Is it not time that these issues receive a permanent place on the agenda of our NGOs, Ward committees etc?

SIMPLY A CONSERVATIONIST / TAX PAYER

Thursday inspiration Last Thursday I purchased my copy of the Hermanus Times from a vendor outside HT offices. I engaged in conversation with the man who introduced himself as Mr Jantjies. We spoke about the fact that the paper seemed a little thinner than usual and how warm it had been. What struck me most during this brief encounter was the pride that he had in his job. He was excited that it was Thursday and that he had recognised employment, albeit for the morning only. At the end of our short discourse, he said: “Ek is so gelukkig dat ek ’n werkie het”. It

was that assertion that really touched me and it was that small snapshot of South African life that should concern us all. I presume that the Hermanus Times has adopted a policy of engaging unemployed and often homeless people. While this may only be for a day each week, the HT has given a taste of honest employment to people like Mr Jantjies. The weather will continue to be warm with a high of 24°C on Sunday, and Saturday being partly cloudy.

Mense kla as dit ongenadig warm is en lag as daar ’n koel briesie opsteek.

U3A going fullsteam ahead ) Talk by author of Cancer...You Can Heal Yourself today (Thursday 19 February) at the Wine Village, at 16:30 for 17:00. Dr Janey has a conventional medical background in Veterinary Science (BVSC, MRCVS) which spanned 22 years of experience in the industry, in cluding much with cancer. It took the tragic loss of her mother to see “beyond the blinkers of convention al medical teachings to begin to understand the truth of cancer and how we can most effectively respond to it.”Dr Janey is the author of the book, Cancer... You Can Heal Yourself! To attend, contact Karin Par ry at karinp@mweb.co.za or 084 500 2314.

The University of the Third Age (U3A) held its 11th AGM in the Sandbaai Hall last week to a record audience of 360 members. The current membership stands at 531, which makes U3A one of the biggest local organisations and also attests to the quality of its various presentations. The following committee was unanimously elected: Gert Claassen, chairman; Mike Brownlee, Rosalind Hendry, Robin Lee, Graham Palmer, Allan Powell, Barbara Pretorius and Letitia Snyman. There were two resignations, and volunteers were called for to fill the places of David Boobyer and Penny Charteris. The U3A had a fruitful and busy 2014, and it seems that 2015 promises to be even more exciting. The United Nations has designated 2015 as the ”International Year of Light” and

the Overberg U3A will be joining thousands of other organisations around the world in promoting better public understanding of light and light-based technologies. Two lectures have already been presented on this theme with two more scheduled for February: The Basic Properties of Light, followed by Light in Art in May, Light in the Environment in June and Medical uses of Light in September Other presentations will include: The Art of visualisation; Understanding Great Music; The History of the American Civil war; Climate Change; Travel Destinations; Nature’s Micro Worlds; Afrikaanse Letterkunde; the Impressionists, and a series on New York City. Monthly “open meetings”, where the public are welcome, are normally held on the second Thursday at 17:30 in the Municipal Auditorium and cover such interesting

topics as Our Hermanus and Overstrand Heritage; An update on energy requirements; Einstein, the man (and a little about his work) and Developments in Africa. The presenters are all experts on their subject matter. Keep an eye on the diary section in the Hermanus Times for further details. The keynote speaker at the AGM was Dr Alex Boraine, who spoke about the current political and social situation, based on his recent book: What’s gone wrong? On the brink of a failed State. Max Leipold volunteered to set up a committee to study the National Development Plan for SA and distil the contents into a digestible format. It was suggested that this document may assist individual citizens to make a contribution to this country and act as agents of change. D. DICKENS

FINMONITOR: It’s never too early or too late to start saving for retirement South Africans are not saving enough for their retirement, with the result that only around 6% of South Africans can afford to retire comfortably. South Africans are facing a very real retirement crisis! Current financial pressure and a culture of instant gratification mean that retirement planning is simply not high on the priority list. Retirement planning is not exclusively for those nearing retirement. The earlier you devise a plan, the longer your investment period, with more contributions and more time for the power of compound interest to work its magic. Albert Einstein once said: “Compound interest is the eighth wonder of the world”. The effect of this eighth wonder is best explained in an example: Sipho invests R1 000 p.m. from age 25. John invests R1 600 p.m. from age 40. At age 65, both have contributed R480 000 to their investment, but Sipho’s R 480 000 has grown to R3,5 million, while John’s R 480 000 has only increased to R1,6 million. Saving for retirement is a no-brainer, but deciding on a savings vehicle needs serious thought. One way of doing it is through a retirement annuity fund: The government also encourages saving for retirement by offering tax incentives if you invest in a registered retirement fund, such as a retirement annuity. Here is a summary of tax differences between a retirement annuity and a discretionary unit trust: The big difference is that, when investing

in a retirement annuity, you are deferring tax until your retirement. Generally speaking one can contribute 15% of income to a retirement annuity fund to reduce your taxable income, thus you pay less tax to SARS. The table below illustrates the attractive tax benefit of using the 15% allowable contribution.

The rules of retirement annuities reduce the temptation to take payouts as you can only access your money at age 55 or unless you emigrate or are permanently disabled. RA’s are also protected from other parties. Creditors, for instance, cannot access the money in a retirement annuity. Upon retirement (55 years and older) there are further tax advantages. You can withdraw up to a 1/3 of the investment as a lump sum and the first R500 000 is tax free. The remaining 2/3 must be used to purchase a living annuity or guaranteed annuity, from which you will receive a regular income. Retirement annuities have in the past been associated with high fees and commissions. The days of having to pay large upfront commissions to your advisor and only seeing growth on your investment many years down the line, are a thing of the past. Unit trust linked RA’s are flexible, offer a good choice of underlying unit trusts to choose from, no penalties on surrender, dis-

LAW FIRM RELOCATES: Renate van Dyk, left, and Marlene Loots, next to her, partners at Van Dyk Loots Attorneys, recently relocated their firm to 8 Magnolia Street from the previous offices 3 Aberdeen Street, from where they operated for nine years. Their move around the corner was necessitated by the sale of the thatched roof Aberdeen Street property to the Overstrand Hospice. Alterations will soon begin in order to extend the Hospice Shop. Although another firm of attorneys is also situated at their new building, Renate van Dyk wants to make it clear that they are two entirely separate law firms and that their offices are also separate. Alongside Renate and Marlene is Aloma Rabie, admin manager and just behind them are Liandi Fourie, candidate attorney, Corne Stevens, receptionist and Marietjie Nel, conveyancing secretary. It’s business as usual at Van Dyk Loots and their contact numbers and e-mail addresses remain unchanged. PHOTO: KERRY VAN RENSBURG

continuation or switching from provider and most importantly the fees are transparent. Investors, who are not inclined to use unit trusts and prefer to own direct shares, will be happy to know a direct share portfolio can now be included within the retirement annuity product structure. The crux of the matter is that your RA contributions should form part of a comprehensive financial plan, ensuring peace of mind. Consider making additional contributions before the end of the tax year. The end of the financial tax year 2014/2015 is upon us and for investors who still wish to take advantage of the 15% taxable allowance by making additional contributions to an existing RA or start a new RA, make sure you do so before the end of this month. . Hannes Smuts is a senior portfolio manager at PSG, Hermanus.

HELP OTHERS AND WIN: The monthly Overstrand Hospice 600 Club draw took place on 16 February and Petrovna Metelerkamp, from Hemel & See Boeke and Penstock Publishing, drew the winning numbers. Alongside her are Sharon Small-Smillie, representing the Overstrand Hospice, and Nel-Sue Fourie from Don Adams Auditors. The winners are: R5 000 – B.P Groenewald; R2 500 – Doris Kotze; R1 000 – William Thomas Atkins. To stand a chance of winning, and at the same time helping cancer patients in the Overstrand who are unable to afford the high costs associated with treatment and medication, call Norma ScottTomlin on 028 312 4679 to join the 600 Club. To enter the draw costs R50 per month.

Congratulations on 15 berry good years!

It has become a home to many learners, where the care, attention and dedication of the staff en sure that all of them grow into happy, wellround ed students. Initially the school focused primarily on non mainstream learners and those with special needs; today the diversity of the curriculum, small er classes and specialised teaching allow the indi vidual needs of every pupil to be met. Computergenerated software immediately boosts the teaching of remediate maths and lan guages, while learners are encouraged to com plete practical tasks that solidify the theories being taught. The focus in the Foundation Phase is on maths and language development skills. For the Interme diate Phase, these areas are strengthened and young entrepreneurial and art talents are encour aged to grow. The GET Phase for grades 7 to 9, develops summary skills, reading techniques, study methods and test/exam skills. The senior FET phase sees learners choosing between subjects like academic maths, physical science, life science, geography, history, CAT, tourism, business studies, design and visual arts. These classes are run along the lines of a college, in which students are rewarded for good results and homework/tasks by being allowed to leave school earlier or start later. This system allows stu dents to use their study time effectively while still leaving time for extracurricular activities. The curriculum follows the WCED guidelines

and high academic levels are encouraged and attained. Last year saw the first winner and runner up for the TechnoBoffin title in the Overberg. Su perSport Let’s Play had two sporting achievers, while EcoSchools itself attained international rec ognition. Art and design have produced students of dis tinction, who move on to university or design pro grammes. The school has an upgraded computer lab, while all classrooms are now equipped with computers for research and visual material. Inter active whiteboard systems are used in language teaching, natural and life sciences as well as social studies. Specialneeds learners are accommodated in independent learning programmes and acceler ated learners are taught by tutors on a 1–5 ratio. Practical classes are offered for learners unsure about which route to follow after grade 9.

Local ladies win Boland bowling competition It was a strenuous and hard fought bowls competition when the Boland Ladies Open Fours championship was played at Langebaan Road on Saturday 7 February. Playing various rounds of 21 ends each could be any player’s undoing. For Tish Bryce and her team from Hermanus, it was a battle to the end. Making no error, the team outplayed their opponents and were the ultimate winners of the 2015 Boland Open Fours.

Hyundai afternoon competition: It was once again a full house for the Hyundai monthly afternoon Tabs in competition, with 36 teams taking up the challenge. Despite the heat on 10 February, the players were on form. The eventual winners were Peter Linde and team mates with a final total of 26 plus 18. Gale Gresse from Hyundai handed over the prizes, and Tish Bryce thanked the sponsors for their continued support.

This week we again had a nice busy schedule, punctuated by welcome rain –- about 12 mm. TUESDAY LADIES Altogether 66 players enjoyed a better ball stableford, won by Joy Lorden and Sheena Bennett with 42 points, one point clear of the rest of the field. WEDNESDAY MEN’S A good showing – 127 players competing in a better ball bonus bogey. The winners were the in-form duo of Faan Pretorius and Reinhard Buhr on a super +10. I am sure the handicappers must be taking a long hard look at these popular players. Winning the South course with a huge +13 were Piet Le Riche and Jannie Visser. And on the North course the friendly rogue pairing of Elton Booysen and Jan Cloete came out tops on +12. Elton recorded a magnificent gross 71 for the day. SATURDAY ACTION

BOWLED AWAY: On Saturday 14 February the Hermanus Bowling Club held their Valentine’s Day bowls trip fun day and everyone dressed for the occasion. On the green are Joy Schumer and Renèe Fullard. PHOTOS: PAM BRUCEBRAND

Enjoying the Valentine’s Day social event at the bowling club are Anneke and Jerome Thorpe.

The weather was super, the greens, even after some welcome rain, were running at 8,5 on the stimp, and the format was an alliance Stableford. This week’s winners on the North course were crazy man Andrew Philip, our “friendly” marshal Rod Taylor, Morgan O Kennedy and teacher Mikki Milne – all made 92 impressive points, well played. Winning the South course, a very established fourball, Ambrose Lloyd, Colin Woodhatch, Don Adams and John Simson, on 93 points. Then on the East course, which is commonly recognized as our most difficult combination, our ladies came to the front on 89 points. Well played to Sue Atkinson, Cheryl Richardson, Jacquie Rathfelder and the lady vice-captain Pat van Renen. VALENTINE’S DAY MIXED Well done to our Lady Captain Terry Sulley for all her efforts in organising the day, which saw 120 players on the course. Great showing. Winning the East course were Wanda Venter, Simon Upton, Chris and John Pearce with 85 points, winning the South course were Gerry Coates, Annie Spratt, Beefy Barlow and Elize Nykamp on 81 points, and winning the North course Cheryl and Peter Richardson and Brian and Diana Davies on a super 85 points. Well played to all, and until next week keep calm and go golfing.
