PREGNANT BABOON SHOT: ANOTHER POISONED
Baboons killed
JANINE VAN DER RIET
A female baboon was found poisoned on Wednesday morning 18 June at a house in Voëlklip while a pregnant baboon was shot dead on Thursday 12 June late in the afternoon in the same area. CapeNature has filed complaints about both incidents with the police. The first carcass was found on a property in 4th Street, Voëlklip and removed by municipal employees on Friday morning. Leon Steyn, environmental specialist at the Overstrand Municipality (OM) said it seems the female baboon was killed by a small bullet, presumable from a .22 firearm, which entered below the baboon’s neck into her chest. They suspect the baboon was shot at another location and that the wounded animal tried to flee but succumbed to her injury on the pavement in front of a house in 4th Street. A member of the public phoned the authorities on Wednesday morning to report a dead baboon found on her property. She found the baboon after taking down her washing in the back yard. According to Michael Henn from the municipality’s environmental services, it seems the baboon had been poisoned and had died about three days earlier. The female that was shot is the third baboon known to have been shot in the urban area since 2009. The leader of the Fernkloof baboon troop was shot at a house in Fernkloof in June 2009. In January 2010 an eight-month-old baboon was shot in 3rd Street, also in Voëlklip. Furthermore, another baboon, affectionately known as Koos, has been missing for one month now and is also presumed dead. After the most recent incidents, and the announcement that the baboon monitoring programme will end shortly, residents are concerned that more people will take the law into This pregnant baboon was found shot dead their own hands, or that residents will have no legal or useful on 12 June in Voëlklip. Barefoot thief climbs through chimney JANINE VAN DER RIET Yes, it is possible for a man to get into your living room through the chimney. But if that man takes your possessions instead of leaving presents, it becomes much less pleasant than a visit from Santa Claus. A woman living on a farm near Stanford was shocked last Tuesday (10 June) to find dusty black footprints in her house after being awoken by a noise at around 23:30. Initially she thought the noise was produced by birds’ feet scratching the roof of her house, and she went back to sleep. A second noise made her suspicious, however. She looked around the house to find barefoot prints on the tiles in every room. A large amount of black dust around the fireplace explained these prints, and how the intruder gained access to the house. According to Warrant Officer Sarina Hugo of the Stanford police, the woman went outside to find a ladder up against the house, where the intruder gained access to the chimney. “She ran inside the house to phone the police and then realised her cell phone, handbag and a suitcase full of clothes were missing,” said Hugo. Two days after the incident, the woman’s British passport and driver’s licence were found on the rugby field in Stanford and handed in at the Stanford police station. The police suspect the intruder to be either very thin or a young person, as the gap to the inside of the chimney is quite narrow. Stanford police are investigating a case of housebreaking. No one has been arrested yet.

Elderly man missing at sea JANINE VAN DER RIET A 68-year-old man from Parow in Cape Town has been missing in very rough sea conditions since Sunday 15 June at around 16:00. According to Deon Langenhoven, NSRI Hermanus deputy station commander, the missing man had reportedly been standing on rocks in front of The Beach Club complex near the New Harbour in Hermanus, with his 43-year-old friend from Mitchell’s Plain. They were taking photographs when both men were swept off the rocks and into the surf by a wave. The Mitchell’s Plain man managed to get out of the water, but he has confirmed that his friend disappeared beneath the surf almost immediately and has not been seen since. The Hermanus NSRI volunteer sea rescue duty crew, the Hermanus police and the Western Cape Government Health EMS and
EMR ambulance services responded. “On arrival at the scene a search commenced for the 68-year-old man. Despite an extensive search no sign of the man has been found and the police will continue the search. “The police have also opened an investigation into the incident,” said Langenhoven on Monday. The police have not released the name of the missing man while efforts are made to locate his family. ) The NSRI is urging extreme caution to the public as cold fronts are bringing high swells and dangerous sea conditions around the coastline. “Big sea swells brought in by a series of cold fronts together with the full moon spring tide has resulted in dangerous sea conditions around our coast and extreme caution is advised, particularly to anglers fishing from shore, boaters, paddlers and bathers, and we urge the public not to venture along harbour walls where waves could sweep over,” said Craig Lambinon, NSRI spokesperson.
) The traffic officer who was presumably shot accidently by a colleague on Tuesday 10 June, was released from Worcester Hospital on 17 June after having surgery. The officer, 30-year-old Slim Makhi from the Overstrand Traffic Department, was shot in the stomach by his colleague when the latter was busy locking his gun away.

Library Friends to help impaired readers access more books Residents of Hermanus with impaired vision will in future no longer have access to new large print books or audio books at the Hermanus Library. According to Jacqueline Dowling, secretary of Friends of the Hermanus Library, the library will no longer be purchasing large print books, due to ever increasing costs. Audio books will not be supplied because the discs are easily damaged. She says: “This means that many readers will have a seriously limited choice of reading material.” The Friends are working with suppliers of reading aids for poorly sighted members and have made contact with Worcester School for the Blind and Specsavers. The library has already acquired a magnifying screen which is now available in the library. They are also exploring other suppliers for more affordable screens. The Worcester Institute for the Blind has good selection of magnifying aids which make it possible to read smaller

The reading aids range in price from a page magnifying glass for R100 to an EYE C electronic reading apparatus which costs R7 860. Dowling is arranging for a qualified person from the Worcester Institute for the Blind to visit the Hermanus Library with a full range of aids. An assessment of people’s requirements will be conducted and they will be advised which aids will be suitable for their needs. She says the Friends are offering this as an outreach community service. Dowling says a member of the Hermanus Library, whose eyesight is deteriorating, has been a member of the Grahamstown Library for the Blind which offers a nationwide free service. To find out more about reading aids for the reading impaired at the Hermanus Library and to sign up for the visit from the Worcester School for the Blind, contact Jacqueline Dowling at bhukifriends@hermanus.co.za.

Space and art join forces for FynArts started with a tour of the Sansa Space Weather Centre moving onto a presentation of our solar system. Local artist Ans Lamprecht guided learners on how to use a variety of art mediums while creating their unique pieces. Once all paintbrushes and pastels were down, the judges were left to do the hard work. After deliberating, the judges finally came to a decision and pulled out four winning art works, one of them being so exceptional that it won the Space smARTy prize. When the excitement of the prize-giving died down, questions started flying about our solar system, the mars rover and the international space station, demonstrating how effective space and artistic expression can be as an educational tool.

YOUTH DAY CONCERT: Hermanus FynArts 2014 concluded on a high note with a special matineé performance by the Cape Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (CPYO) at the Thusong Hall in Hawston on Monday in celebration of Youth Day. The audience had more than doubled in size since last year’s inaugural per formance and proved very popular with young and old. Many of the schoolchildren present admitted that this was their first experience of a symphony concert and they were inspired by the remarkable talent of this young orchestra’s members, most of whom come from previously disadvantaged communities. The cel list Abel Selaocoe (above) received a standing ovation and the event ended with an exhilarating performance of the fourth movement of Beethoven’ third symphony, con ducted by the CPYO’s artistic director Brandon Phillips. The universe took shape for a second time at the ever popular Space and Beyond Art Competition, hosted by the South African National Space Agency (Sansa) during this year’s FynArts celebration. From the Earth to the Milky Way Galaxy, the competition brought art and space together in a beautiful fusion of creative expression. A total of 38 budding young artists between 8 and 12 years of age participated in the competition and were eager to create art works filled with everything to do with space. Puik, verpleegsters! EDITORIAL COMMENT Living with nature What if every so often, someone took a pot-shot at one of our southern right whales? It’s unthinkable and barbaric. Our whales enjoy protection, but this has not always been the case. They were killed for food and fuel, and in some parts of the world, this is still the case. Our baboons, roaming the Fernkloof Nature Reserve mountains and the streets of Voëlklip, are seen by many as a menace. Raiding homes, breaking gutters, terrifying our children and behaving like thugs. But no matter how much of a problem the baboons continue to be, they are very much a part of the natural environment we are so quick to boast about. Shooting them from your kitchen window is simply not allowed, especially in a residential area. We may never know who shot the baboon in Voëlklip this week, or who poisoned another one. This is not the first time this kind of action has been taken in this suburb. We have built homes on the mountain slopes, and cut the baboons off from the coast where they could, once upon a time, feast on marine morsels. Now, when they see food in every backyard, or kitchen counter, they are driven by their appetite and instincts. Shooting them is surely not the solution.
Stanford’s service hero Early on Monday morning 16 June, a public holiday, I discovered a services problem in Stanford and the only cellphone number I could find was for the local fire fighting hero, Graig Niemand. I called him to ask who to inform and he requested details. Within 10 minutes he was at the scene, assessed the problem within minutes, and commenced to make calls to various Overstrand staff members relaxing in their homes. He told them to immediately report for duty and informed them of the problem and where it was situated, and instructed them on what had to be done by them to remedy the situation. This demonstration of great management skills, accurate assessment of a problem, rapid determination of the solution, and immediate reaction by instructing staff members has given me a great deal of confidence in his and thus the Stanford administration’s ability to deal with challenges. The Overstrand is most fortunate to have dedicated staff members of his calibre and needs to be congratulated on employing such persons, and on developing their skills through ongoing training and support. Well done Graig and all of the Overstrand team.

By my laat dit ’n oortuiging van ’n wan-
Who is actually being neglected in the language saga? I shan’t repeat anything mentioned in the responses to Anne Clark’s SMS regarding the first front page of the Hermanus Times dated 5 June, except to say that I wholeheartedly agree with them all. Please note, by the way: English title only while the newspaper is part of the once Afrikaans-only Media24 group! Even their website opens in English, with the option of reading it in Afrikaans. However, I did a time-consuming spreadsheet depicting English articles and ads versus Afrikaans and bilingual ones. I worked through the entire Hermanus Times of 5 and 12 June but in the 12 June issue I did not count the Classifieds. English articles in the above two issues are 172 vs 55 Afrikaans ones; English ads are 295 vs 59 Afrikaans ones and there are 9 bi or trilingual ones. If anyone has reason to complain, it is Afri-
kaans, Xhosa and Zulu speakers – not Englishonly speakers! We are the ones being neglected by the HT and the business community. But then, English is mos The World Language over which the sun will never set. In addition, I am convinced that Anne gets served in English whenever and wherever she so wishes, while the rest of us have to switch to English. Luckily most of us can and we do it graciously and smilingly. Dear Anne, take the article to any friendly, Afrikaans-speaking neighbour (I doubt that you have Afrikaans friends) and ask for a translation or a summary of any of the few Afrikaans articles in any Hermanus Times. There are also translators who will help you – unfortunately at a price.

Terug by Hermanus. Die personeel van Saal A was briljant. Hou so aan.

Dear Mary Faure, you were so right! When FynArts was launched last year, it was well received. All who attended the events that were staged were very glad to have done so, and pleased with the festival as a whole. I recall writing to you at the time, however, and suggesting that, whilst it had been a wonderful event, perhaps it would be sensible to hold it every two years, so as not to kill the proverbial goose. You disagreed – and how right you were! This year’s festival has completely overwhelmed me and, I’m sure, many other participants. Renee and I attended 10 events and also spent a good deal of time visiting galleries and wine estates. Everything we saw, heard or tasted made us want more, and one can only conclude that the festival has truly come of age. Well done to you and your team. I think you have started something that will continue to grow and will establish our wonderful town as a centre for exciting and diverse culture for the foreseeable future.

Circulation should determine language policy I read the somewhat acerbic letter from Bruce Andrew (HT/12/06) regarding the language of publication of HT. The fact is that nearly everyone who is likely to buy HT reads English, while the same cannot be said for Afrikaans. Whether they should or shouldn’t is irrelevant. It is very frustrating to see a front page story of interest but not be able to read it, and often one will not buy the newspaper as a result. The most important consideration for a local newspaper is circulation and this must be what governs the editorial policy. Surely Afrikaans-speaking people wouldn’t boycott HT if it were published in English only, would they? It’s time to put aside petty nationalism and take the pragmatic view.

If you can’t read Afrikaans, then learn how to speak and read Afrikaans. Talk: no longer ‘plenty of fish in the sea’
HELEN ZILLE VISITS TIKKA PALACE: The owners and staff at Tikka Palace situated in Village Square were pleasantly surprised last weekend when Helen Zille, premier of the Western Cape dropped by for a visit and a meal. Shanaaz Malik from Tikka Palace (right) says Zille stayed at the Arabella Hotel near Kleinmond for the weekend and told Malik that she “just had to visit her favourite restaurant in the Overberg!”
There are plenty of fish in the sea... Sadly, this saying is no longer true. Whale Coast Conservation (WCC) will present a talk on sustainable fishing and the state of marine fisheries on Wednesday 25 June at the Green House in Vermont at 16:30. John Duncan, senior manager of the WWF-SA (World Wide Fund) Marine Programme, will outline WWF’s broader work around sustainable fisheries. Mkhululi Silandela, WWF small-scale fisheries officer, will give a talk with a particular focus on the ongoing work with small-scale fisheries in the Kogelberg region. The talk will focus on the current state of play in marine fisheries, small-scale fisheries in the rest of the country, what is being done about the big issues and what role each of us can play. The presentation will be followed at 17:30 by a special general meeting for WCC members.

Dié wielwolk bring groot reëns Talk of the town!

From Hermanus Craft Village to the JSE PSG Konsult, the independent 16-year-old financial services provider, became the latest company to list on the main board of the JSE on 18 June 2014. This event marked a milestone for this remarkable company, which was born and raised right here in Hermanus. Its founding CEO and current chairman, Willem Theron, remembers that the very idea of PSG Konsult was conceived over a cup of coffee with Wallie Krumm in the Prince of Whales coffee shop towards the end of 1997. He and Wallie, at the time also a Hermanus resident, submitted their plan to the PSG Group. They immediately found support and a 50% investor. The result was that they kicked off the business on 1 July 1998 under the name PSG Konsult. The following is a quote from the company’s manual compiled the same year: “The Company must be to the long-term personal and financial advantage of PSG Konsult Ltd, accountants, consultants as well as our valued clients and the broader community. In order to accomplish the aforementioned, the company will open branches right across Southern Africa with the view to list.” Prophetic words indeed. PSG Konsult’s head office was established in the Hemel-en-Aarde Village, where it was situated until last year. Over the years, Jannie Mouton, chairman of PSG Group often jokingly remarked that it baffled him how such a successful business could be run from a “craft village” in Hermanus! What will interest investors is not only the current state of the business, but particularly its prospects. Most investors prefer companies that have unique qualities and a distinct competitive advantage. PSG Konsult’s business model is one of a kind. It has three
segments being WEALTH, ASSET MANAGEMENT and INSURE. Although these businesses complement each other to some extent, the diversification provides valuable protection should trading conditions become tough in one segment. Having an effective distribution network of 193 offices across the country is an enviable asset of the company. Also, and probably the most powerful factor that drives its success, is the innovative and unique remuneration model that was devised and implemented more than a decade ago. In essence, the financial planners, portfolio managers and/or stockbrokers own 70% of their respective branches. 30% of branch income goes to Konsult while the branches have to manage their expenses and earn their profit incentive from the remaining 70%. As Mouton puts it: “It encourages entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship within a corporate structure.” But great businesses must also show consistent growth, which will reflect in their numbers. How does PSG Konsult stack up? The company had a very strong showing during its financial year to February 2014. Headline earnings per share rose by 30% to 20 cents per share and a dividend of 11,3c was declared. Funds under management grew by 38% to R112,1 billion and funds under administration by 31% to R234,5 billion. On the Insure side, underwriting premium income increased by 550% to R432,6 million. One might beg the question: what makes PSG Konsult an impressive business? When we recently asked Willem what he saw as the single most important factor, he replied “we all work together as colleagues and we are all entrepreneurs”. He clearly does not only rate the entrepreneurial
ethos of the business highly, but also the long-term impact of the flat management structure and the mutual respect it demands and has established amongst all involved. Years after attending PSG Konsult’s Annual Conference as opening speaker in 2006, tycoon Dr. Christo Wiese recalled that what struck him at the time was the “almost tangible” excitement of the 300 attendees about their business. Dr Johan van Zyl, CEO of Sanlam Group, remarked that PSG Konsult stood out in the South African financial services landscape as an independent institution that conducts quality business with integrity and professionalism. Add to that the backing of the PSG Group and a vastly experienced management team led by CEO, Francois Gouws. Francois is a workaholic by all accounts and makes no secret of management’s vision to take this company right to the top. Yesterday’s listing on the JSE landmarks an important step towards realising that vision. Note: This article does not constitute explicit advice. Past performance is not indicative of future returns. Always remember the prudent way is to consult your stockbroker before investing. The writer owns shares in PSG Konsult. Hannes Smuts is a senior portfolio manager at PSG, Hermanus.

U3A to discuss SKA The biggest project in the world during which R1 million will be spent every day for the next 11 years, will be the focus of the U3A Overberg’s open meeting at the Overstrand Auditorium on 26 June at 17:30. Wolfgang Lange will present an update on the Africa-based project to build the largest radio telescope array in the world, the Square Kilometer Array (SKA). The SKA, to be constructed near Carnarvon in the Northern Cape, is a huge new development in the field of astronomy. The Africa SKA bid was endorsed by the 15th Assembly of Heads of the African Union in July 2010. The SKA International Board agreed on 25 May 2012 to split the 1,5 billion Euros (70:30) between South Africa and Australia. The African development is led by South Africa with developments also taking place in Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia and Zambia. The main SKA development near Van Wyksvlei, about 70 km west of Carnarvon, is now in its detailed design stage where approximately 90 million Euros will have been spent by 2016.Once completed, the 3000 km African SKA baseline will consist of 4 000 radio telescopes and cost well over 1 billion Euros (approx. R14 billion). Lange is a retired IT software manager at Standard Bank and, since 2005, a presenter at the IZIKO Museum Planetarium, initiator of the Southern Peninsula Astronomer Club and author of the definitive visitors’ guide for Sutherland, From Sea to SALT, which has been approved by the SA Astronomical Observatory and now includes a new section on the SKA. This book will be on sale at the meeting for R100.

Horse lady’s story comes to stage The Hermanus History Society in association with award-winning playwright and director Charles J. Fourie, will present an evening of entertaining theatre at the Overstrand Auditorium on 4 July. Fourie’s production of his play Ella’s Horses is based on the true story of the ‘horse lady of Hermanus’. This touching and prophetic play tells the story of the eccentric Ella Gordon, who barters a deal with her local priest to take her beloved horses and dogs to heaven. Ella Gordon was a Scottish immigrant who came to South Africa with a touring circus during the early 1900s. She settled in Hermanus and later moved to her farm at Karwyderskraal, where she built a church and school. She also dedicated her life to the local community and her beloved horses, for which she built the famed horse graveyard. It is the only one of its kind in South Africa and can still be seen today. The award-winning production features acclaimed television and film actors Deirdré Wolhuter and Leonard Moss. The evening is hosted to raise funds for the Hermanus History Society whose aim it is to restore the heritage and history of Hermanus for future generations. Your support of this event will be greatly appreciated. Tickets for the performance on Friday 4 July at 19:00 in the Overstrand Auditorium cost R80. For bookings contact Angela Heslop at email: aheslop@hermanus.co.za. Tickets will also be available at the auditorium from 18:30 on the evening.

DUAL PURPOSE: LIGHTER, LEANER AND MORE DYNAMIC
Suzuki’s powerfull V-Strom 1000 returns QUICKPIC The legend is back! After a six-year absence, Suzuki’s V-Strom 1000 makes a triumphant return to the adventure motorcycle segment with a package that is lighter, leaner and more dynamic than before, while also benefiting from latest-generation technology.
First launched in 2002, the original Suzuki V-Strom 1000 was an early pace-setter in the burgeoning adventure tourer segment, and was followed by the more compact V-Strom 650 two years later. But more stringent emissions regulations halted production of the V-Strom 1000 in 2008, leaving the 650 version to fly the Suzuki flag in the adventure tourer category. It’s done so with great success, undergoing
a comprehensive update in 2011, and helping to boost global V-Strom sales to in excess of 187 000 units. That figure is expected to be boosted significantly by the return of the VStrom 1000. Described as a sport-adventure tourer for all enthusiasts, the V-Strom 1000 provides a compelling counterpoint to the big and bulky touring machines from other brands. Instead, the new Suzuki delivers a nimble and wieldy riding experience, thanks to a compact form factor and reduced weight, together with a low and comfortable seating position. At the heart of the V-Strom 1000 is an all-new, larger 1033cc V-twin engine. The liquid-cooled DOHC powerplant has been comprehensively redesigned, and now features a larger capacity, reduced mass and greater efficiency. Its focus is on delivering optimum performance across a broad range of applications, including congested city streets, paved and unpaved rural route, and twisty mountain passes. The engine features new cylinders and cylinder heads, redesigned pistons and con rods, a new crankshaft and clutch assembly, and twin coils and twin iridium spark plugs per cylinder. The entire emphasis of the redesign was on improving efficiency, reducing weight, improving response and performance, and complying with stringent emissions regulations. These changes, together with an all-new fuel-injection system and a new, lightweight exhaust system, have resulted in an average Worldwide Motorcycle Test Cycle fuel consumption figure of 20,9 km/litre – an improvement of 16% over the previous 996cc V-twin engine. The all-new V-Strom 1000 is the first Suzuki motorcycle to feature a three-way adjustable traction control system, ensuring rider confidence and control regardless of riding conditions. In doing so, it also ensures a more relaxed riding experience during long-distance touring. The system continuously monitors the front- and rear-wheel speeds, as well as several other parameters, and instantly reduces engine output when wheelspin is detected. The traction control reacts rapidly, as its measures
the riding status every 4 milliseconds. System sensitivity is adjustable in three steps. The new V-Strom exterior design is slim and streamlined, emphasising the inherently sporty character of the bike. The vertically stacked headlight array is reminiscent of the legendary Hayabusa, while an LED tail light is both attractive and functional. The V-Strom’s all-new chassis provides a slim, low-mass starting point for an equally compact and lightweight package that performs optimally in wide variety of conditions. A longer wheelbase aids stability, while the new inverted forks are adjustable for preload and damping. Highlights include a low seat height and slim fuel tank for enhanced ergonomics, a comfortable riding position for both rider and pillion, and a fully adjustable windscreen to reduce buffeting and improve visibility. The V-Strom 1000 also features beefier brakes with latest-generation ABS control, while a 19-inch front wheel and 17-inch rear find a good combination of response and stability. The instrument display is comprehensive, but also ergonomically intuitive. It’s dominated by a large analogue rev counter, augmented by a multi-screen LCD-based trip computer that is rider-configurable to provide a wide range of data, including speed, fuel consumption and key systems status. “The return of the Suzuki V-Strom 1000 is good news for adventure and touring enthusiasts seeking a motorcycle that combines nimble road manners, high comfort levels, exciting dynamics and a compact form factor, says Stuart Baker, sales manager at Suzuki Motorcycles SA. “The more powerful, more efficient 1 000 cc engine, linked to the long list of improvements and advances, make the new V-Strom a highly attractive proposition in its segment,” he concluded The new Suzuki V-Strom 1000 has a recommended retail price of R134 750 and is sold with a two-year unlimited mileage warranty. Sales of the newe V-Strom have commenced in June.

Preparations for Volkswagen Rally 2014 in full swing QUICKPIC There is one month to the start of the annual Volkswagen Rally on Friday and Saturday 11 and 12 July. Round four of the national rally championship – and the traditional mid-point of the season – will see South Africa’s best rally talent tackling one of the most popular events on the national rally calendar, aiming for a new finish line at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. “There are some changes to the layout of the rally this year,” says route organiser Joe Fourie. “The Volkswagen Rally will start on a brand new stage on Friday and end on a new stage on Saturday afternoon – there is also a Super Special stage complete with bridge and crossover to make things even more exciting.” The traditional start at Auto Pavilion in Uitenhage, right at Volkswagen South Africa’s main gate, remains the best place to meet the teams, take photos and get autographs before the mid-
day start on Friday. It is from this point that the Volkswagen Rally will head to stage one opposite the Uitenhage hospital on Mission Road. “Stage one is 16 km of loose surface gravel rallying and there are three very good spectator points,” says Fourie. “This stage will be run twice during the Volkswagen Rally, providing variety and excellent spectating before the field heads out to the Longmore Forest.” The final two stages of day one on the Volkswagen Rally sees the field leave the gravel behind and head for Jeffreys Bay where two stages take place – at Fountains Mall and in the city centre. After an overnight stop at Port Elizabeth Oval Track Raceway, the Volkswagen Rally field will complete two stages in this area before heading out to Longmore for the second day of gravel action in the forest. The big finish for the Volkswagen Rally this year takes place at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium where the final stage will be run on the access roads within the stadium area.

QUICKPIC The second generation of the world’s favourite crossover, the ground-breaking Nissan Qashqai, makes its debut in South Africa next month as part of a highly successful international launch. The all-new Nissan Qashqai pioneered the compact crossover segment when first introduced to the world in 2007 and set exceptional sales records in the years which followed. The new model builds on its predecessor’s popularity with an all-new look and feel, matched by unparalleled drivetrains, enhanced specification and premium quality. In South Africa, total Qashqai sales reached 20 000 units from launch. The original model
also achieved widespread critical acclaim racking up several accolades including topCar magazine’s Best Compact SUV/MPV (2011); Best MPV/Crossover in the 2011 CAR Reader’s Top 12 Awards; as well as continuing to be one of Women on Wheels magazine’s favourite compact SUVs. “The all-new Nissan Qashqai, which was engineered in Europe and is produced at Nissan’s Sunderland plant in England, is set to build on the success of the first generation model. It will provide South African consumers with a sleek new crossover design, advanced technology, improved dynamics, premium quality and a host of new, extremely efficient drivetrains,” comments Crossover Product Manager at Nissan South Africa, Nancy Reddy.
Range high lights include the new Nis san Qashqai 1.2T models which sport an allnew 1.2litre tur bocharged petrol engine producing a tantalising 85 kW and 190 Nm PHO TO: QUICKPIC
“New Qashqai is the embodiment of ‘innovation that excites’ – the philosophy driving everything we do at Nissan. Its fresh new take on the original crossover concept will continue to fly the flag for Nissan at the forefront of crossover evolution in the segment we pioneered, which has boomed especially in recent years. “The original Qashqai sold over two million units internationally and we expect the trend to continue with even greater momentum as the next generation model is already proving immensely popular in other markets. The 2014 Nissan Qashqai has been named Car of the Year by What Car? magazine in the United Kingdom and has also been awarded a fivestar safety rating by Euro NCAP.” Launching in South Africa on 1 July, the new Nissan Qashqai arrives as a five-model range with a mix of petrol and diesel engines, manual and Xtronic CVT transmissions, as well as two distinct specification levels providing a broad assortment to suit the needs and requirements of the demanding compact crossover market. Geared in every way towards premium quality, high specification and ultimate efficiency, the new Qashqai range offers a new take on crossover mobility. Range highlights include the new Nissan
Qashqai 1.2T models which sport an all-new 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing a tantalising 85 kW and 190 Nm. Diesel models include the ultra-frugal new Qashqai 1.5 dCi, which produces a tax-busting 109 g/ km of CO2 and realises fuel economy of just 4,2 F per 100 km While the range-topping Qashqai 1.6 dCi All Wheel Drive (Awd) with ALL-Mode 4x4i offers 96 kW and 320 Nm of torque. Coupled to class-leading frugality and exceptional driveability, model-specific highlights include 19-inch alloy wheels, Led daytime running lights on all derivatives, Around View Monitor (Avm) and NissanConnect – Nissan’s latest infotainment system with smartphone integration and downloadable app support. Concludes Reddy: “With the all-new Nissan Qashqai we expect to increase our share of the segment we pioneered both internationally and of course in South Africa. The new Qashqai is particularly suitable to the needs of South African motorists who need a highquality vehicle with the practicality and versatility of an SUV, matched by the compact proportions and ease of use provided by a compact hatchback. In short, Qashqai continues to tick all the boxes.”

New Datsun Go is revealed in South Africa
21
QUICKPIC As the name suggests, the Datsun GO will bring to the local market a vehicle that is designed for ‘people on the GO’- people who are active, have defined priorities and pursue the optimum choice for their stage of life. Starting with a clean sheet of paper, Datsun designers have been able to create a totally new and distinctive design for the Datsun brand models of the 21st century. The Datsun GO is designed to be stylish and modern, but at the same time purposeful and robust. The ‘face’ of the car is dominated by Datsun’s distinctive and modern “D-cut grille”. The overall result is a smooth and sophisticated silhouette in which the strong haunches and character lines suggest dynamic movement and clear agility, coupled with an inner strength and overt robustness. Vincent Cobee, Global head of Datsun, says: “In creating Datsun GO we have designed a brand new car that offers all the benefits of models that are much more expensive. Our car features class leading levels of performance, economy and handling. It is built to requirements and not down to a price. The addition of the many advanced features proves this.” In keeping with the Datsun design ethos, the interior of the Datsun GO is modern, simple, functional, yet undeniably good looking. Uniquely in the class, the gear lever and parking brake handle are mounted in the centre console. A benefit of housing the gear lever and parking brake in the centre console is the opportunity to adopt ‘connected’ front seats which are unique in the segment. Extra comfort is also provided by the ergonomically designed front seats, which provide added spinal support. Interior space is class-leading and with all the other standard features, making the Datsun GO one of the best value cars on the market today” advises Des Fenner, General Manager, Datsun. Datsun GO offers much to customers - from modern exterior styling, fuel consumption of just 20 kms per F, a unique Mobile Docking Station (MDS) that allows an owner to sync his or her Smartphone directly with the car. The MDS simply slots the smartphone into a holder in the centre of the dashboard which can be paired by an AUX cable to the car’s system and the car’s integrated door mounted loudspeakers. “Research has indicated that the Datsun GO purchasers place a premium on having a car that reflects their individual personalities. As such, a full range of optional accessories will be available to personalise the Datsun GO to owners’ requirements” added Fenner. Datsun GO is planned to go on sale in the last quarter of 2014 and the aim is to bring the car in at under R100 000, making it a real value proposition for the first time new car buyer. Sales and service will be initially established through a network of 30 Datsun branded dealerships throughout South Africa, a number to be doubled in mid-term. Tale of the tape Selected High line features of the DatsunGO - a new modern choice for up-and-coming aspirational owners - include: •Modern styled 5-door FWD hatchback •1.2 litre engine •Fuel efficiency of over 20 km/F •Expanded front seat configuration •Spacious interior for five occupants •Unique Mobile docking station

All-new Grand i10 a real jewel in the local market QUICKPIC Hyundai’s all-new Grand i10 has arrived in South Africa, and this small well-endowed hatchback has all the potential to fill the shoes of a forerunner that has helped to put the Korean car brand’s name on the map in our country. “We couldn’t help drawing comparisons between the new Grand i10 and the Hyundai Getz – a car that was discontinued about four years ago after it reached enormous popularity in South Africa. The Grand i10 has everything in its arsenal, and more, to do what the Getz did for Hyundai. Not only is it spacious inside, yet small in overall diameters, but it is filled with standard features that will make is a compelling choice in the entry-level segment of our car market,” says Stanley Anderson, marketing director of Hyundai Automotive South Africa. Anderson said at the launch of the Hyundai Grand i10 that this hatchback was chosen to fit in between the present, smaller i10 – which is retained in the local model line-up – and the i20. “It fills that spot well – not only in terms of size, but also regarding price and standard features. We expect buyers of small city cars to look keenly at what the Grand i10 has to offer,” he said. The all-new Grand i10 is launched in South Africa in three derivatives: the 1.25 Motion manual, the 1.25 Fluid manual (with a sligthly higher specification level) and the 1.25 Fluid with a four-speed automatic
At 3 765 mm, the Grand i10 is 180 mm longer than its smaller sibling, and one of the longest cars in the segment. Likewise, the Grand i10 is also the widest in its segment at 1 660 mm (+ 65 mm). PHOTO: QUICKPIC gearbox. Influenced by Hyundai Motor Company’s design philosophy, “fluidic sculpture”, the Grand i10 features sleek and substantial lines that emphasise the naturally athletic stance of a model which is longer, wider and lower than its predecessor. The new proportions deliver a driving experience that has been developed to meet European, and thus also South African, driving prefer-
ences. Relocated and retuned components result in greater body and wheel control, delivering more driver involvement and ride comfort comparable to that of cars from higher segments. The larger bodyshell of the Grand i10 yields one of the roomiest occupant cabins on the market, as well as an impressive 256 litres of trunk capacity. Up to 1 202 litres becomes available when the rear seats are
folded – also one of the best in its class new levels of craftsmanship can be found in the spacious interior, together with levels of comfort and safety equipment commonly only found in segments above. The Grand i10’s 1.25-litre engine belongs to Hyundai Motor’s popular “Kappa” engine family and incorporates a range of advanced technical features that raise power and torque, and enhance smoothness
and driveability. Outstanding features of the Kappa’s modern architecture include: A dual overhead camshaft (DOHC), dual continuously variable valve timing (CVVT), a very stiff cast aluminium block with cast-iron liners, aluminium cylinder head, lighter connecting rods and maintenancefree long-life timing chain. The 1 248 cc engine delivers 64 kW peak power at 6 000 r/min, and reaches its maximum torque delivery of 120 Nm at 4 000 r/min. The power is delivered in a spirited fashion and the small, yet perky engine never gives the impression that it is labouring. Fuel consumption can be as low as a measured 5,9 litres/100 km, with emissions of 130 g/m in the 1.25 Motion manual and 1.25 Fluid manual derivatives, and 6,9 litres/100 km with emissions of 147 g/km for the 1.25 Fluid with the four-speed automatic gearbox. At a price range from R139 900 to R159 900, with Hyundai’s five year/150 000 km warranty and roadside assistance thrown in, the Grand i10 offers exceptional value. The red interior option with a leather cloth combination would add R5 000 to the price. A service plan is also an optional item. * The Grand i10 range with their standard recommended retail prices is: Grand i10 1.25 Motion manual R139 900 Grand i10 1.25 Fluid manual R149 900 Grand i10 1.25 Fluid automatic R159 900.

Energyefficient solution for small businesses
Nomvuyo Mpalweni is the proud owner of a spotlessly clean little restaurant in Zwelihle called Kwa-Vuvu. She recently met Mayor Nicolette Botha-Guthrie and they discussed the high cost of electricity and gas. The mayor introduced Nomvuyo to the wonderbag concept. Nomvuyo runs a take-away service and serves the whole community from her restaurant. Botha-Guthrie arrived unannounced at the little restaurant and donated a wonderbag to help bring down Nomvuyo’s running costs. She hopes that others will also invest in a wonderbag.

Nomvuyo Mpalweni’s restaurant in Zwel ihle is popular in the local community.
Mayor Nicolette BothaGuthrie (centre) hands over a wonderbag to Nomvuyo Mpalweni (left), owner of a takeaway business in Zwelihle. On the right is Lindile Ntsabo. A wonderbag reduces the amount of cooking time needed to prepare food. A large pot can be taken from the stove and put inside the wonderbag and the cooking process will continue.

) Bigger and better: The Corner Bakery at the Engen / Woolworths shop on the corner of the R43 and Sandbaai Main Road is expanding their bakery and food section and the bigger, better section is expected to be finished by the end of June. Shoppers can look forward to quality food, baked goods, bread, pies and something delicious for the sweet tooth. Brenda Greeff, one of the managers, says the bakery staff will also receive brand new, attractive uniforms to wear while working at the “new” improved bakery.

Sport Sport Golf Roundup with Julian Shaw
Last week our weather was absolutely perfect at the start of the week but became progressively worse. Tuesday was a lovely day for the ladies, and 18 took part in the day in a betterball stableford. Taking the honours this week was our ladies vice Captain Terri Sulley and her partner Mieke Tetley on 44 points. Well played, ladies! Wednesday was again a lovely day indeed. Not a breath of wind and lovely sunshine. We had 119 players, also competing in a betterball stableford. Winning the day on 47 points was the voice of experience Reinhard Buhr and his partner Faan Pretorius. Coming in a close second, one point behind was Syd White and Baldy Baldwin. Well done, guys. The ball pool paid to 43 and there were six two-clubs. Thursday was again an immaculate day. I had the good fortune to play Arabella with the Boland Nomads. Arabella is ranked fifth in the country and the top golf course in the Western Cape. I haven’t played at this venue for a couple of years and we have had mixed reports about the quality of the course and facility. May I just say that although my loyalties lie with Hermanus Golf Club, Arabella is world class. The course was fantastic, well presented, and an absolute pleasure to play. The staff were extremely friendly and knew exactly what they were doing. The catering was very reasonably priced and again excellent. As for the greens I haven’t seen greens so beautiful since last year when I was at Augusta. As for the reports of poor course quality and not measuring up to expectation, whatever they have done to improve their facility, they have done, and even Mr and Mrs Grumpy would be able to see just why it is ranked number five in the country. Beautiful. Saturday was washed out, lots of rain and wind and no golfers! Maybe next week.

Mountain Birds win SAB League
27
The Mountain Birds played the last SAB League soccer game against Marine United from Gansbaai on 7 June.
The Mountain Birds from Mount Pleasant won the local SAB Soccer League and will be contending in the playoffs on 5 July.
The game started at 15:00 at the Mount Pleasant sport grounds and was very fast-paced. Lungu “Shuma” Tupeni scored the first goal for the Birds, which gave them a 1 - 0 lead at half-time. At the beginning of the second half, Dumani “Malu” Tyokile of the Birds scored again, followed by Marine United scoring their only goal of the game. The Birds’ coach then decided to make three changes and brought in Sabusiso “Phule” Nteyiya, Sikelela Sibawu and Yanga “Mawasa” Vayeke. This brought along a positive change for the team with Vayeke striking twice. Mountain Birds won the game by 5 - 1 after Nteyiya placed the final nail in the United coffin. The team thanked the sponsors who made the season possible, especially Kallie and Susan Keyser for the sponsorship of their transport. They will be playing in Beaufort West in the play-offs on 5 July.

Six schools participated in the tournament, which is part of the Western Cape Government’s Life Zone Dreamfields Project. During Monday’s Dream Event, Lukhanyo’s soccer team faced Masakhane in their semi-final and won 2 – 0. Die Bron’s girls beat Zwelihle Primary’s team 1 – 0 in their semi-final. With the final score of one all at the end of the allotted time, it took a penalty shoot out to determine the winning team. On Saturday 21 June the team will participate in the district finals in Cape Town.
Morris Tshabalala, principal at Lukhanyo Primary School and president of SASFA Overberg (South African Schools Football Association), says he is happy with the progress SASFA has made so far in terms of the development of football in the Overstrand. Tshabalala says last year Zwelihle Primary produced two players who were selected to attend the School of Excellence in Johannesburg. He is also proud of Lukhanyo Primary, which is the first school in the Overberg District to win a schools soccer competition.
