CBD Main Road reopens two weeks early CILENE BEKKER After a protracted struggle by the business community to have the resurfacing of Main Road postponed until after the busy tourism season between October and December, the project was not only rescheduled for January, but was completed two weeks ahead of schedule. And on 14 February, no less. Which prompted the mayor during the ribbon ceremony on Friday, to joke that you know a woman is getting old when she gets excited about opening a road on Valentine’s Day. The project to rehabilitate the road started on 15 January and was scheduled for completion by end February. By all accounts, good weather and planning played a vital part in this project finishing two weeks early. Mayor Nicolette Botha-Guthrie thanked
the affected businesses for their patience, and all the stakeholders for excellent planning and co-ordination. Bertus van Wyk, project engineer from V&V Consulting Engineers, in turn congratulated Zebra/Isidima Civils JV on a resurfacing job well done. Kees van de Coolwijk from Fotofirst, spokesperson for the businesses along Main Road, says the contractors were very cooperative. “For example, when complaints were received about the dust and dirt, they did it after hours to accommodate the shops.” All in all 409 m of road was resurfaced, and a few changes were made. There are now three pedestrian crossings on this stretch of road – the existing one in front of KFC, one in front of Mr Price and one just before the circle at the Marine hotel. Dirkie Uys Street, opposite the entrance to Mr Price, is now a two-way street, and a drop

The suspects will appear in court and the Hermanus Police is investigating the case. September says house and business robberies are a concern in all areas in and around Hermanus. “It seems that the suspects arrested in robbery or theft cases, were mainly stealing jewellery, handbags, cell phones and cameras. In almost all the cases, the owners left windows open.”

The first suspect was arrested after the Ford Bantam bakkie he and an accomplice had presumably stolen was found abandoned at the Honeymoon bridge just before the Kleinmond turn-off on the R43. The vehicle came to a standstill with no petrol and the suspects walked to the garage at Salandra. After they bought petrol, they hitched a lift back to the bakkie, but upon their return, a member of the provincial traffic department had seen the abandoned bakkie and stopped to investigate. The two suspects tried to flee the scene, but one suspect was arrested by the traffic official.
Further investigation conducted by detective constables Siphelele Mtholo and Elliot Mjonose found two more suspects linked to the incident. They were arrested in Zwelihle. In another incident the same day, a suspect was arrested in Muizenberg and a vehicle, which was stolen in Zwelihle, was recovered following a police investigation. Another vehicle which was stolen in Zwelihle in December, was recovered on 2 February by police in Caledon. It is alleged that the vehicle was used to transport stolen copper cables in Caledon. According to lieutenant Fadila September, spokesperson for the Hermanus police, all the suspects are linked to the syndicate that is responsible for most of the vehicle theft cases in Zwelihle. All the suspects, aged between 20 and 25, appeared in the Hermanus Magistrate’s Court and bail was denied.

Police confiscate abalone JANINE VAN DER RIET The Hermanus police’s flying squad confiscated more than 3 000 pieces of abalone on Monday morning after they chased a vehicle on the R43 near Honingklip, in the direction of Bot River. Captain Davy Jullies and constable Enoch Mdlangati were on patrol on the R43 when they spotted a white Mitsubishi Colt bakkie driving towards Bot River.
They followed the vehicle and soon thereafter the driver jumped out of the bakkie and ran away. The bakkie ended up in a ditch near the Karwyderskraal turn off. Police members found 32 bags containing 3 269 pieces of abalone. The Caledon police are investigating the incident as it happened in their jurisdiction. No arrests have been made.
Investigation after woman jumps off bus JANINE VAN DER RIET The Hermanus police are investigating a case of culpable homicide after a 22-year-old woman apparently jumped out of a moving bus in Swartdam Road. The incident happened on 8 February at 17:00. The circumstances surrounding the incident are still being investigated by the police as it is unclear what happened, according to lieutenant Fadila September, spokesperson for the Hermanus police. “On arrival our members found the young woman, Nolili Mayezana of Zwelihle, dead in the street near Penny Pinchers,” September said. According to eye witnesses, Mayezana was the only passenger on a privately owned bus at the time of the incident.

Zwelihle man sentenced for murder JANINE VAN DER RIET A man from Zwelihle was found guilty of murder and sentenced to ten years imprisonment in the Hermanus regional court on 23 January. In March last year, Thobeka Mbulani from Zwelihle was found dead by Fundile Pikoko, who was her boyfriend at the time. The couple had apparently fought over money. Pikoko assaulted her and she sustained injuries to her head and face. She was assaulted during the night and when Pikoko
woke up the following day, she was lying dead next to him. A few months after the murder, the community of Zwelihle handed a memorandum to the Hermanus Police and the Hermanus Magistrate Court, voicing their concern regarding the murder. Two of the ten years’ imprisonment are suspended for five years. The Hermanus Police station commander, Col Nomana Adonis said she is satisfied with the conviction and the outcome and thanked Const Philander for the good work done.

Motorists fed up with roadworks delay HEDDA MITTNER AND ANNETTE THERON Frustration is mounting among motorists who make regular use of the R320 between Hermanus and Caledon to get to work and/ or home. “The road is in a terrible condition and there’s just nothing happening,” says Carolyn Martin, coowner of Creation Wines in the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge. “We have almost given up hope as we were expecting to see project engineers, labourers and equipment on the road by now.” Following a closed tender process, the Department of Transport and Public Works (DTPW) signed a new contract with Brink & Heath Civils on 29 January after the previous contractor, Vusela Construction, went into liquidation. At the time, senior operations manager of the department, Anton Nell, gave his assurance that construction will resume within the next week or two. However, Brink & Heath’s project manager Kenwyn Street, says motorists will have to be patient for at least another two weeks even though they have been on the site since Monday 10 February. “We have moved into Vusela’s site offices and are currently assessing the condition of the road with our engineers. We need to establish what has been done and what not, and the standard to which the work has been done. “There has also been extensive

PHOTO: ANNETTE THERON storm damage to parts of the road since Vusela ceased construction, and this forms part of a separate insurance claim. The assessors have been on site with the engineers to quantify the damage, which will have to be repaired before we can continue with the project.” Avril Adams, principal of Diepgat Primary, says the condition of the road is atrocious. “My car rattles and shakes and I am worried about the impact the condition of the road has on my suspension and steering. Lately there have been large rocks lying in the road, resulting in me having to move over to the other side of the road in order not to drive
It appears that funseekers at Onrus beach on Sunday morning in advertently caused an artificial breach of the estuary when they dug a trench in the sand. PHOTO: BAREND LUUS
Beach fun turns dangerous HEDDA MITTNER A reader alerted the Hermanus Times about an incident at Onrus beach on Sunday morning that could easily have had tragic consequences. The reader says children were playing in the estuary and used their beach spades to dig a trench in the sand leading from the mouth of the estuary to the sea. “It was all innocent playful kids’ stuff, the weather was great, ideal beach conditions. No one could have foreseen the danger that was about to unfold,” writes the reader. It appears that what started as a small trench suddenly grew into something much bigger as the water from the estuary started rushing through the breach. A resident who was also on the beach that morning, Eben Viljoen, says as the breach widened, the water gained momentum and turned into a raging river with rapids. He says there were adults present who helped the children to dig the trench. “At first the kids enjoyed it tre-
mendously and took rides down the ‘river’ on their boards and lilos, but it soon became extremely dangerous. “The people on the beach on the other side of the river could not get across. I saw one elderly lady trying and getting into trouble halfway through. She had to be helped along by bystanders who went to her aid.” The reader also says the flow became more powerful by the minute. He saw a young boy who was being swept away when his mother jumped in to save him. “They both then got into further difficulties, but luckily there was another parent in the rapid that lifted them both to safety. “By now this rapid had turned into a beast of a torrent, gathering strength as more of the beach sand was eroded, creating a wider mouth for a greater volume of water to flow out of the estuary.” The reader says members of the public should be aware that this is not only irresponsible but unlawful. “Not so long ago some fellows were fined a substantial amount for doing the same at the Klein River mouth,” he warns.
over them and shred my tyres. “What upsets me even more is that nobody informed us about the delay. I am totally fed up. Before road works commenced, the road was in a far better condition than it is now.” Dieter Odendaal, a resident of the area, says the road works, and especially the delays, have had a negative impact on the local economy. “Due to the bad surface of the road under construction and the lack of maintenance, many people had to dig deep in their pockets to keep their cars on the road.” Odendaal says the road has also become dangerous and there have been a
number of accidents lately due to the lack of upkeep. Martin confirms that the maintenance of the road is “appalling”. “There have been quite a few accidents – just last week a car with four members of our harvest crew hit a rock in the road, lost control of the vehicle and skidded off the road into a ditch. “We’ve also had to go and assist motorists who were on their way to our tasting venue when their vehicles broke down,” Martin says. “Several clients have said they will not do business with us until the road is fixed, and the road is costing my employees dearly in terms of
maintenance, breakdowns and accidents.” Martin adds that the road is much better since it was scraped last week. “The road is passable and bearable – if it is maintained,” she says. Martin feels that the DTPW overpromises and under-delivers. “We need better communication and a realistic time line so that we know what to expect,” she says. Odendaal agrees. “As a resident, we were all looking forward to the tarring of the road as a positive factor in our lives, but the lack of communication from the department has been disappointing and we feel left in the dark,” he says. “We look forward to the road being completed as soon as possible and hopefully we won’t encounter another delay.” According to Street, once the process of inspection and assessment has been completed, the first priority will be to make the road safe. “We will start by repairing the bypasses to make the road safer and more convenient for motorists during the remaining construction period. This is a 15-month contract and with all the delays since Vusela was placed under liquidation, the completion date has moved forward from September 2014 to May 2015.” Anton Nell, senior operations manager of DTPW, says they are aware of the bad condition of the road but still believe that motorists can adapt as the road is not inaccessible and the situation is only temporary.

Nina then asked me to be her photographic assistant, and I was all too happy to do just that,” says Sandra. While waiting for the seven models to arrive, the owner of Afriganic Sunglasses asked whether Sandra was one of the models, and when Nina replied that she wasn’t, Sandra was asked to model a pair. After that, she was simply included in the line-up of models. Her natural beauty needed hardly any make-up and no special outfit. For Sandra, who is a student at Boland College currently, this was a nice little adventure during the December holiday, but for now she’s putting her head down and focusing on her studies and voluntary work at the Hermanus Provincial Hospital.

Thank you for caring My children and I would like to thank the sisters at the Hermanus Hospice for their warmhearted support during the last months of my husband’s fight with cancer. Especially Sister Ann Theron. Sr. Ann (as we so fondly call you), we truly believe that you were sent by the Almighty to be the one to take care of my husband. Your dedication and soft speaking manner when my husband became so very ill, had a calming effect on him and myself as well as our family. When you said “call me anytime you need me” I know that you truly meant it . You will always be very special to our family. Yours can not be an easy task and we commend you and your colleagues. Thank you so much for caring.

The manager’s position is not always the easiest to have with tourism being such a pivotal and always vibrant discussion point.

Your recent newspaper edition (6 February) was brought to my attention and I thought it worthwhile writing to you in response to the headline article entitled: “Public kept in the dark about polluted estuary” On 3 January my family and I were swimming in and around the river mouth – along with many other holiday makers (in essence taking up floating devices of sorts and riding out the part of the river mouth on them). Whilst this was great fun, we would certainly not have done this if there was a sign up saying that the estuary/river was polluted. My daughter (aged 4 years old) ended up in hospital for the night of 4 January after vomiting and experiencing diarrhoea (booked into hospital by the doctor on call at the Emergency ward, as she was dehydrated after the continuous vomiting etc). At the time we were convinced that it was something related to the water in the river mouth, but were unable to pin anything down other than the pharmacist at Clicks
in Hermanus who mentioned that a number of other people had come in to collect medication related to similar symptoms, and asked if we had been swimming in the river mouth. The purpose of this mail is merely to voice my disappointment about the fact that there were people who knew about these sewerage spills but decided that it was in the best interests not to erect warning signs. As a father, it is extremely worrying when your 4-year-old daughter is hospitalised for a period of time – certainly enough to ruin a couple of days of your holiday. The bills from the Hermanus Mediclinic were not insignificant on their own, but of minor importance when compared to the health of a family member. Spilt milk now, but in future we should be able to trust the authorities to let us know when the environment is potentially hazardous (with unseen “hazards”) through the use of temporary warning signs.

So hierdie is ook ’n hulp wanneer jy moet eis ná byvoorbeeld ’n brand.
KLEINMONDBELASTINGBETALERS VERENIGING
Turn Main Road into pedestrian village If the new “bypass” (from Main Road circle via Royal Street to the last circle at Woolworths) could be proclaimed the R43, then the municipality could claim Main Road as its jurisdiction and implement Noel and Beth Hunt’s beautiful vision of a pedestrian friendly “village” in that part of Main Road currently being tarred. (‘Walkway on Main Road, HT 6/2/14).
Trees, benches, ponds, hanging baskets, brick-paved roads, ornamental lighting! Please look at Victoria, capital of BC, Canada, as inspiration. Victoria also has whale tourism but most beautiful streetscapes. We only need the WILL to do it, it is very possible to add value to our “old” CBD.
ADRIAN LOUW
The Malls – a window of opportunity for the CBD During the recent era of property boom a number of professional people invested in older houses in and around the Hermanus CBD for business use, adding to the parking choke. Other reasons ie tin town and wide-spread retail stores also lead to the creation and frustration in hunting for parking, which helped to reduce the number of shoppers, including some of the elderly who avoid shopping in the CBD. The CBD is old-school shopping which has also become the demise of many small towns in SA with layouts not functional. Hermanus CBD fortunately has the sea and whales which one has direct contact with, which other towns cannot offer and that is enough to keep the CBD alive. Using the average income statistics of Mr Piet Louw (HT 13/2/2014), the majority families living in outer Hermanus will spend up to 10% of their income on fuel and parking to shop in the CBD. Taking the fuel and parking expenses into consideration, then the costs of crossing the mountain monthly to shop at the malls there have a minimal difference. The malls will relieve the pressure in the CBD and should some retailers move on, then business Hermanus should see this as a window of opportunity to realign the CBD by keeping the old-school look while taking the transition of online shopping into consideration and creating a proper website for retailers in the CBD. Business Hermanus – it will not help the CBD to challenge competitors. Be creative by removing the ongoing problems from the CBD and business certainly will improve.

Well disguised, but the red arrow shows where the head of the boomslang is.
PHOTOS: JEAN FAURE
Two boomslange come visiting On a recent hot and sunny day two boomslange were seen in our garden in Voëlklip. The first was seen peering through my secretary’s office window from the surrounding ivy, giving her the fright of her life. A snake removal expert (André Neethling: 082 425 0456) was called and spent the better part of the day following the two boomslange, a male and female, between the hedges and trees on the boundary of our property. Eventually he managed to catch and bag the large brown female (approx. 1,5 m) on the flat roof of the office, to be released later – far away from residential areas. The next morning the slender black male came back to the rooftop of the office and sniffed around with his forked tongue for his absent mate – it was very touching to see and fitting behaviour being so close to Valentine’s Day! Eventually he slithered off into the fynbos before Neethling had time to return. Sadly,
a week later, a dead boomslang already in a state of decay was seen on the lawn of our property, presumably killed by a mongoose or bird of prey. Mongooses and a few other animals are immune to boomslang venom, which contains a potent but relatively slow-acting haemotoxin interfering with the blood clotting mechanism of its victims. However boomslangs are very shy and stealthy with unprovoked bites on humans being extremely rare – in a decade of us living in Hermanus we have never seen a boomslang despite their likely presence in our bushes and trees for many years. Keep a lookout for these beautiful and hardto-spot creatures – with keen eyesight and stereoscopic vision they will typically see you first and slither out of sight. At present National Geographic Wild is screening a documentary on snakes.

In dié kompetisie stem lesers vir hul gunstelingboek.
Bel Johan Botha van Zambesitoere by 012 752 4184 of epos: zambesitoere@telkomsa.net.

Walker Bay Active not for the fainthearted JANHENDRIK COETZER The first Walker Bay Active outdoor sport event, presented by the Sea-andSand Institute, is scheduled to take place from 30 April to 3 May. The logistics, safety and other arrangements were discussed during an open meeting on Thursday 6 February at the Whale Coast Hotel. Parking arrangements were clarified with traffic authorities and Sea-and-Sand will take care of all the safety measures. According to the founder of Sea-andSand, Sparks Estherhuizen, this project must be seen as promoting sport and recreation in the Overstrand rather than as a competition. “Therefore we decided to award the first 30 finishers with gold founder’s medals. It is not about winning or losing or who comes first or second, but rather who had the guts and endurance to take part and finish the race. “With arts festivals across the country all towns need to import their artists, but with an outdoor sport festival like this we have all the resources right here in the Overstrand,” he says.
Through this project, Sea-and-Sand aims to raise funds for the institute and is calling on sport and outdoor “junkies” to enter. The items which can be competed in include the following: ) Marathon swim (2,5 km) from the New Harbour to the Old Harbour. ) Canoe challenge (20 km) from Gansbaai Harbour to the Old Harbour. ) Beach cycling (15 km) along the Plaat from De Kelders to Grotto Beach. ) Marathon beach run (15 km) along the Plaat from De Kelders to Grotto Beach. ) Rubber duck race (20 km) from Gansbaai Harbour to the Old Harbour. The Hermanus area manager of the Overstrand Municipality, Don Kearney, gave the event their full support as far back as 2012. In a letter, which Hermanus Times has in its possession, Kerney wished the Sea-and-Sand Institute all the best with the project. He said he trusts that it will not only be a huge success but that it will revitalise the use of the national environment in a positive way and promote the conservation thereof. Barefoot Beverley’s free shopping spree Beverley Marais, who was the lucky winner of Hermanus High School’s Checkers Trolley Run, clearly had her strategy in place when she rushed down the aisles of Checkers to load as many items in her trolley as possible, given two minutes to do so. This was the schools fourth Checkers Trolley run, and took place on 12 February. Beverley’s name was drawn on Monday 10 February by the branch manager of Checkers, David Botha. During her trolley dash, Beverley was cheered on by family, friends and learners of the schooll who ran after her, giving advice on which items to grab. Beverley had arrived with a clear plan though – she immediately went for the cleaning products, sugar, coffee, tea, porridge and

Part of her strategy was to do the run barefoot, so she could move as quickly as possible. Hermanus High School’s principal, staff and Parent Teacher Association (PTA) thanks everyone who bought a Checkers Trolley Run ticket and by doing so helped raise R43 000 towards the school’s capital projects for 2014. Emma Steere and Zita Winshaw from Hermanus High School won prizes for selling the most tickets. The school also thanked Land and See Sport for donating the cash prize voucher.

Learners of Lukhanyo Primary enjoyed their weekend camp.
School camp for leaders The grade 7 learner council body of Lukhanyo Primary School enjoyed a weekend camp at the Overstrand Training Institute recently. They had the opportunity to bond as a team and learn more about leadership through
participating in many fun activities, led by Pat Diederichs and Graeme Lahoud. Pat works for Overstrand Training Institute and Graeme enjoys volunteering at schools and delivers devotions in assembly at Lukhanyo every Monday.
When two pheasants “fell from the sky”, one after the other, and landed neatly in her courtyard, Pat Poulter was alarmed and mystified. On Friday 7 February at about 14:30 Pat and her 10-year-old grandson, Jess Terblanche were in the lounge of their home in Canterbury Street in Westcliff, when they heard a loud thud. Pat asked Jess to investigate and when he went outside he found a dead, but still warm pheasant lying on the ground. He quickly went back inside through the lounge door, which opens onto a bricked verandah and lush garden, and was busy telling his grandmother what had happened, when they heard another thud. They both rushed outside and there, alongside the first bird, was a second bird lying neatly alongside it. The area they landed in is surrounded on three sides by a high brick wall and outdoor staircase which leads to the upstairs part

of the house. Pat says the pheasants and guinea-fowl visit her garden daily and she feeds them birdseed and bread crumbs. She says pheasants have laid eggs in the back garden and raised their young in safety. She does not know how the two dead pheasants landed in the courtyard side-by-side with their eyes closed. She says they tried pouring a little water on theirheads to revive them, but it did not help. Pat then moved them into the shade incase they recovered, but nothing worked. She says they had no obvious wounds, as would be caused by a pellet gun, and she could not see any blood. Pat says: “If they fell from above the house, or the roof, and landed in a heap of rumpled feathers, I could understand. But they were lying neatly next to each other, which is quite frightening.” Pat thinks perhaps they were poisoned, but again, they would have landed in a heap. Jess and Pat have since buried the birds in the garden, but are no closer to solving this fowl mystery.

5. Lig jou verhuringsagent in as daar enige herstel- of opknappingswerk gedoen moet word. –Bykomende bron: Die Burger Eiendomme 15/02/2014.

TAX, LIES AND RED TAPE BY DAWIE ROODT WITH LINETTE RETIEF: Find out why: • It’s wrong to blame Wall Street bankers for the global financial crisis. • The rhinohorn trade should be legalised. • Exempting any thing from VAT is a bad idea, even for the poor. • Job creation is a fruitless exercise. • South Africa’s problem is not poverty. Tax, Lies and Red Tape is an easytounderstand, very opinionated book about economics. Roodt argues that economics is not about numbers, graphs and statistics; it is about people, and how they react to incentives. Unfortunately, he says, our politicians seem to have forgotten this. Using simple concepts and thoughtprovoking anecdotes, he ex plains how ‘the market’ evolved with human ity, what was wrong with communism, what the global financial crisis is really about, the ways in which the state spends your mon ey (and ways it actually should), how tax is collected, how money and inflation really work, the ins and outs of trade, and the ups and downs of labour. In the process, Roodt debunks politically correct thinking and cur rent government policy, and suggests alterna tives for a more effective system.
SPRINGBOK FACTORY WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A BOK BY LIZ MCGREGOR: The original idea for this book was for McGregor to follow Jean de Villiers and the rest of the Springbok team through the 2011 World Cup – their preparation, logistics, and a dayto day diary leading up to their expected victory. At the end of the tour she sat with a 45 000 word manu script, hoards of photos documenting every step, but there was no victory and who would want to read about a failed campaign? McGregor explored anoth er avenue – an investigation of the Springbok produc tion line, i.e. what it takes to be a Bok. She focuses primarily on the Du Plessis brothers (Bismarck and Jannie), Jean de Villiers and Schalk Burger. Their par ents, schooling (the most productive is Grey College in Bloemfontein, with 22 Boks; second is Paarl Gym nasium with 10) and sporting history, with interviews with their moms, teachers, coaches and lecturers. This is great reading and gives good insight into the na ture and nurture that turns a boy into a Bok. It is fol lowed by chapters on Logistics (what it takes to or ganise a tour); Maintenance (keeping the Bok and their bodies in shape and fit to play), The wives and girlfriends; The Black Bok; The Big Bok Loss; The Owners; and The Banker. In my opinion the book starts off at a fast pace and then fluctuates with highs and lows towards the end, but rugby afficiana dos (and not just a rugby fan, like me) will no doubt value some of the information more. There are lots of photos. John Dobson, WP coach, says this is the most insightful book on Bokrugby he has ever read, and Nick Mallett describes it as a mustread for true rug by supporters. Grasp opportunities for a better life On February 12 Sake 24 in Die Burger ran their lead story on a speech by the chairman of PSG Group, Jannie Mouton, who was a guest speaker at the opening of the newly established entrepreneurship gap year programme that is now being offered by the business school at Stellenbosch University. While reading the article, I could not help thinking: what a brilliant idea. Students, who sign up after matric will, for a period of six months, attend lectures in entrepreneurship and business management for three days a week. They will receive individual and group mentorship and end with a draft of each one’s “life plan”. This approach is intended to provide matriculants with a constructive alternative to the conventional gap year custom which involves spending a year overseas doing odd jobs such as working in bars or as security guards, which more likely than not will have no bearing on their future career plans and aspirations. What really struck me while digesting this suggestion and Mouton’s other challenging comments in conjunction with thought-provoking arguments contained in J P Landman’s recent book, The Long View, was how critically important opportunities and choices are. Not only for one’s financial wellbeing but in shaping one’s overall capacity to deal with life’s challenges. Opportunities are not to be confused with lucky breaks. Sure, some people are born with distinctive advantages that pave the way to their success. Examples include a high IQ, natural sporting talent, musical genius and modellike looks. Others are even born wealthy – as an aside, wealth and success are not synonymous. Many successful people ascribe most of their achievements to being at the right place at the right time. Be that as it may, these are examples of special opportunities arising in the lives of specially endowed people.
Quite ordinary people should be aware though that opportunities constantly pass their way which, if grasped, can bring about life-changing results. These often go a-begging because of a notion that opportunities are for only the selected blessed ones. Quite the contrary. Let’s look at two examples that will probably be relevant to most readers. On 7 May eligible South Africans will have the opportunity to vote for a new government. Voters who are satisfied about how our country and its respective provinces are run, will see this as an opportunity to keep their representatives in the saddle. To those who have had enough of corruption, poor service delivery, a pathetic and still deteriorating educational system and useless municipalities, the election presents a huge opportunity (which will be gone by 8 May) to make their proverbial voices heard. The general elections’ outcome will affect everyone’s life – in particular his/her pocket – as almost everything governments do has a direct financial impact on all citizens. Rates and taxes may change – so could the way your hard earned tax rands are spent or misspent by a new government. The extent of social grants will be reconsidered. How effective a new parliamentary opposition will be in a new legislature will influence life in many ways with new approaches, laws, taxes and interventions. Grasp the opportunity to cast your vote and influence your future. Pertinent to the youth’s yearning for a better life – materially and in many other aspects – the opportunity presents itself to build long-term financial success by systematic and dedicated saving / investment. Once you embark on this road, the opportunity for spectacular long-term returns can be exploited by engaging the power – or rather, magic – of compounded growth of returns. To accumulate wealth, you need time on
STEVE JOBS BY WALTER ISAACSON: “The people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do.” The biography on Steve Jobs starts with the story of an ordinary childhood. Steve was adopted and knew this from an early stage. His biological mother required his adoptive parents to pledge that Steve would receive a college educa tion – a promise they kept. Steve’s adoptive fa ther, Paul, fixed up old cars and through this pas time he taught Steve ne gotiating skills and a fo cus on sleek design and precision work. At school it became ap parent that Steve was intellectually superior to his peers and the school proposed that he skip two grades. Steve’s parents decided that he should only skip one grade, which meant that he was with children one year older. As a junior he was sometimes bullied at school. It was also at school where Steve met Woz – Stephen Wozniak – an electronic genius. This meeting set Steve on the course that would determine his future and legacy. Woz and Steve became business partners and their different strengths helped to conceive Apple. Steve’s parents kept their promise and sent him to college where he led a bohemian existence, became bored, and dropped out. After college he worked parttime and later started working at Atari. It was only a matter of time before Apple was born. The founding and management of Apple should be a busi ness studies prescribed book as all the lessons of good and bad management are intertwined as you turn the pages. The book re flects constantly on Steve’s brilliance as well as his complex per sonality and strained relationships. Reality Distortion Field (RDF) is a term coined by an Apple employee to describe Steve, as he could distort an audience’s sense of proportion and scale of diffi culties, and make them believe that the task at hand was possible. Steve’s lovehate relationship with the other “tech titan” Bill Gates, is just another one of many stories captured in one book – emo tional stories about an adopted son who deals with abandonment, stories of brilliance, electronic development, design, management, relationships… All these are contained in this biography that is just short on 600 pages on the life of a genius who enjoyed mak ing things simpler yet aesthetically more pleasing. In 2011 recur ring cancer caused the end of Steve’s life but he will always be remembered – especially by the loyal customers of Apple products. REVIEW BY FRIEDA LLOYD
your side. Start early. Yes, it is difficult for most young people to save and many are not prepared to commit to the discipline of ongoing saving but the long-term rewards will outstrip whatever the sacrifice is perceived to be. Parents should understand this, should encourage their children not to spend every cent and assist them in making a savings culture their own. Many older people realise too late that they never grasped this opportunity. And now they cannot turn back the clock to ensure financial peace of mind. Don’t let this opportunity pass you by. Mouton and Landman urge South-Africans to be positive about our country’s future and to be involved in carving a better future for us all. Choose to be involved. Face the challenges. Grasp the opportunities offered by our “very strange society”. I endorse Landman’s comment: “To live in South Africa, you must learn to live with the ambiguity of the place. If you can’t cope with ambiguity, I recommend Canada or Australia.” Note: This article does not constitute explicit advice. Past performance is not indicative of future returns. THE LONG VIEW GETTING BE YOND THE DRA MA OF SOUTH AFRICA’S HEAD LINES BY JP LANDMAN: A very sexy little economics guide book focusing on the questions that ordinary South Africans contem plate regularly. The layout and design of the book is interesting and gives good PR to what could otherwise be mind numbing economic questions. It is an easy read with only the page on the right printed with text. On the left side there are pictures or illustrations to soften the unavoidable theoretical ap proach to the future of our country. One could randomly open the book and start reading sections on their own as there is plenty to learn from the many facts and stats discussed in lay man’s terms. Not the book for seasoned academics or econo mists but very informative for the average person wanting to understand South Africa and its economic situation better. The book breaks complicated issues down to a practical level and makes you want to read more. One section concludes with South Africans’ ability to live with ambiguity and advises that one should simultaneously keep the contrasting pictures that we see on the news in mind. This is not easy. To live in South Africa you need to deal with the ambiguity that surrounds us. The book concludes that more things are going right than wrong and this does indeed give a sense of hope as the author wished it would. The author is a selfemployed political and trend ana lyst. His focus areas are trends in politics, economics, social cap ital and the interplay of demographics and economic growth. He has an undergraduate and law degree as well as a MPhil in Fu ture Studies from Stellenbosch University. He also studied Eco nomics at Harvard. In 2009 he completed a course at Oxford University on the economies of the BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India & China). REVIEW BY FRIEDA LLOYD

Proud to be a business owner in Stanford
The Kleine River Valey farm house which Sir Rober Stanfod owned for 17 years, was the only house large enough to accommodate some of the survivors of the Birkenhead disaster in 1852. Now a antique shop and B&B in the Heart of Stanford.
trust you got the one written from Smails farm on the Kleyne River, [2] as soon as you would have heard of the loss of the Birkenhead. I was unable there to write much, and could not give many particulars of the shipwreck, but I shall now in this letter. We left Simons Bay[3] from whence I wrote to —/ at 6 oc PM – the 25th February, and got well out of the bay before dark. I turned in at 9 oc as I was to have the watch on deck from 4 to 8 oc. We were then going about 8½ knots an hour with two boilers. I slept like a top, and know nothing of what happened up to the time I was awakened by three distinct shocks. I started up, and immediately it struck me that we were on a rock. I went on deck,[4] the first person I met at the top of the companion ladder was the ship’s carpenter[5] – I asked him what was the matter? His answer was not very consoling: “We are sinking fast, we have got 13 feet of water in the ship forward.” I then went below and dressed. When I came on deck again I saw Captain Salmon giving orders from the Poop [deck]. The ship was rolling at this time so much that it was with great difficulty any body could stand. We had 9 horses on board; they were kicking and plunging furiously, several had fallen down. Just at this time one of the engineers came up to the poop and reported that water had put the fires out in the Engine Room... ” Visit the Kleine River Valley farmhouse in Stanford where the full letter can be read.
Established 1949
HM Steamer Birkenhead was a 1 400 ton British iron paddle frigate built in 1845 and converted into a troop carrier in 1848. While transporting troops from Simon’s Town to East London for the Frontier War, she struck a rock off Danger Point near Gansbaai, and sank. Legend has it that she was carrying £240 000 in gold (about 3 tons) as part of a military pay packet. A salvage group called Depth Recovery Unit, led by Dr Allan Kayle, salvaged a few hundred gold coins in the mid and late 1980s.

LET’S TALK ORCHIDS: Ground orchids were in an astounding profusion in the mountains of Hermanus during the past summer months. Regular hikers most probably were rewarded with a colourful parade of Disas, Satyriums, Pterygodiums and many other or chids each blooming at their expected times. To complement this amazing season, the Bo tanical Society has invited William Liltved, author of The Cape Orchids, to share his passion for orchids at their speaker’s evening on 21 February at 19:00 at the Fernkloof Hall. In his book, the relationship between Cape orchids and fire is explained, with spe cial reference to orchid lifehistory strategies that enable survival in fireprone vegetation. He will discuss the pollination of Cape or chids by butterflies, moths, flies, bees, beetles and birds, covering previously unknown pol linators, as well as deception and mimicry by the orchids, selfpollination and natural hybridisation. With fynbos on our doorstep and the ravages of the fire fresh in our memories, the talk by this knowledgeable, worldrenowned botanist, historian and pho tographer promises to be a highlight not to be missed. STAATMAKER:MOTOR VIR LANG PAD EN KORT PAD
Daihatsu Terios: ’n Buksie vir enige pad LISE BEYERS
Kleinmond - It was a proud day for the white rose of Yorkshire on Tuesday as Tyke Welton scored his maiden victory with a particularly exceptional back nine. At the other end, The Yorkshire Ripper just outplayed Rookie Robinson to avoid last place. Robinson, of course, was born in Yorkshire but saw the light and crossed the Pennines. The ex-used-house-salesman’s sense of humour failure at being pipped at the post for the second week running at least gave everyone else a laugh. )Scores: 46 Rob Welton; 44 Ian Newman; 40 Chris Martin; 38 Jon Forsyth; 37 John Tunstall, Andre Franken; 36 Alan Smith, Tony Hackett; 34 Peter Sulley, Tony Wreglesworth, Gordon Wilson; 33 John Cheesbrough, Dave Smith, Mannes van Zyl; 32 Mike Graham, John Flynn (guest), Bob Barton, Dave Brittain, Brendan Byrne; 31 Dave Rade, Malcolm Lazenby, Tony Jones; 30 John Horobin; 29 Hugh Frangs, Alan Calder, Sam Seal; 28 Vic vd Westhuizen; 26 David Naylor; 24 Geoff Crowther; 22 Cres Creswell (guest); 13 Keith Gillott; 12 Dave Robinson. –DAVE SMITH

A record number of athletes with disabilities from countries around the world competed in the OCC this year. More than 1 000 entries were received. Boshoff finished the 21,1 km race in 41 minutes and 11 seconds, breaking all previous records. He broke this record in the hand cycle his father, Bossie Boshoff, bought from hand cycle super star Ernst van Dyk. Van Dyk also won his division in the hand-cycle division in the 42,2 marathon race this year at OCC. Boshoff previously took part in the 10 km hand-cycle race, also breaking the record in that division last year. His next race is this weekend at Joostenbergvlakte and then he will compete at the Nedbank Boland Stadium Challenge at the end of March.
