Oncology unit now a reality JANINE VAN DER RIET The long talked about possibility of establishing an oncology unit in Hermanus is now a reality and the first ground work to prepare for building the unit has already started. The land for the planned development on a rectangle of open land in Westcliff, bordered by De Goede and Albertyn Streets on one side, and Church and Flower Streets on the other, was transferred to the successful bidder, Annenprop 9 Pty Ltd, said Stephen Müller, director: infrastructure and planning at the Overstrand Municipality.
CareWell Solutions is involved in the project to develop the oncology unit and stated on their website: “The CareWell Hermanus medical centre will include a day-hospital, sub-acute hospital and oncology unit. The facility will service the larger Overberg area and is set to open in 2015.” Jan Schutte from CareWell said the project is going forward as planned, and that more information about the planned project will be available after their shareholders meeting later this month. Elnette du Toit, community mobiliser from Cansa Overstrand regards the new oncology unit as wonderful news.. “For years patients had to drive to Somerset

West or Cape Town for treatment. Often patients have to receive radiation on a daily basis for up to four weeks. This places a lot of physical strain on the body and because exhaustion and nausea are side effects of the treatment, long-distance travelling places even more stress on the patient.” A resident from Hermanus who recently underwent treatment for cancer says: “Earlier this year I had surgery and then as a preventative measure I had to go for radiation treatment at a private oncology practice in Somerset West. The treatment was for a period of five weeks and every day, including some public holidays, I had to drive to Somerset West for my appointment and daily dose

of radiation. The treatment itself was painless and took less than a minute each day. The journey there and back, however, took up to two hours every day. The high cost of petrol had to be factored in as well, because these expenses are not covered by a medical aid. “While undergoing this treatment, I met three other people from the Hermanus area who were also undergoing treatment for various forms of cancer. With an oncology unit here, many people from the Overberg and further afield would probably benefit. However, the developers would have to ensure that they have the machines and level of expertise needed to maintain a comparable world-class facility.” Continued on p. 4.

Rape suspect arrested After a 16-year-old girl from Zwelihle was raped, some community members took the law into their own hands, found the suspect and stabbed him with a knife. The girl was walking to the shop with friends around 20:30 on 15 November when they were approached by a man unknown to them. The suspect (21) threatened to kill the girl. He dragged her to nearby bushes, allegedly raped her and then ran away. The community went looking for him and the following day, the Hermanus Police received a complaint about a stabbing after community members apprehended the suspect. The man was arrested and will appear in court.

) After swift response by the police a resident from Onrus was arrested on Friday 14 November after she had allegedly been stealing groceries from OK MiniMark worth thousands of rands over a period of time. The suspect briefly appeared in the Hermanus Magistrate’s Court on Monday 17 November. The case has been postponed until 3 December.

FOTO: ANSCHEN DU PLESSIS

Final goodbye to Dr Marius Barnard JANINE VAN DER RIET A thanksgiving memorial service was held on Wednesday morning at the United Church in Hermanus in honour of Dr Marius Barnard (87), well known heart surgeon, who died on Friday morning in his home in Bergen-See, where he and his wife Inez have been living for the past 13 years. Rev Dr James Gray opened the service with a verse from Micah 6:8. Barnard had told him “I would like to have this

read out on the day of my service.” The verse reads: “He has shown you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God”. Some family members of Barnard then said a few words about their beloved dad and oupa. Marius jnr read a passage from the Bible, and Melissa Leskinen (who lives overseas), said when they chatted on Skype, oupa used to always say goodbye with “I wish you enough”. Asking him what he meant by this, she said he explained it means that you wish the other person only good things to sustain them. Charles Winshaw said at one time oupa had mentioned his only regret was that he did not meet ouma Inez sooner in life. Adam, Barnard’s son, said his father would have asked everyone at the service: Why are you not at work? What are you doing here? “And, if he was here today, he would have said all the ladies look pretty, but one lady that stands out, is his beautiful wife.” Adam said his father had all the ingredients for a happy, fulfilling life - his passion, love,

dedication to find and listen to, the basic needs of ordinary people. Adam ended his tribute with the first verse of a poem written by Jan FE Cilliers: Stil, broers, daar gaan ’n man verby, hy groet, en dis verlaas. Rev Dr Gray explained to the full church hall, that Barnard had three firsts, and a fourth first. His first first, was his career as heart surgeon. His second first was his antiapartheid political career. His third first was the innovative critical illness insurance

policy that he had established, and the fourth first was that he had found faith in God. “When he found out he had prostate cancer, he said: "I thank God for my cancer”. “He did suffer, and it was very difficult, but the gratitude towards the illness and cancer had brought him nearer to God.” The service ended with a slideshow of photo’s of Barnard’s proudest moments, including scenes with his family and of his career, to the sounds of Louis Armstrong’s, Moon River. Fittingly, those who had remained strong during the service, broke down and cried.

RED CROSS and SANTA GET 25 YEARS When council agreed in September 2012, to lease a portion (115 sqm) of Erf 4565 (the vacant land across from the Hermanus Times currently used as free parking) to SANTA and Red Cross for 9 years and 11 months at R96,49 (excl VAT) per month, both voluntary organisations had indicated they were unhappy about the lease period because they will be investing over R1 M on the property, which consists of a building and further infrastructure. These improvements will vest in the OM free of charge after the lease period has lapsed. At the council meeting on 18 November, council approved an amendment to the agreement. Starting from 1 December 2014 the property will be leased to SANTA and Red Cross for a period of 25 years at R114,80 per month, escalating every July. Conditions include: ) The cost of relocating from their current premises, on the same Erf as the United Church in Royal Street, are to be carried by SANTA and Red Cross, ) The development must be completed within two years.
SWIMMING BEACH CLEANING POLICY A draft swimming beach cleaning policy was submitted at the council meeting on 18 November, with the recommendation to adopt the policy as from 3 December 2014. In short, the aim of the policy is to keep the beaches and coastal environment free of waste material, while protecting the natural coastal processes and dynamics. Waste material refers to: ) Rubbish (bottles, paper, plastics, cans etc.) left behind by litter bugs. Picking up litter and emptying litter bins will be according to a cleaning schedule. ) Kelp will only be removed from areas demarcated as kelp cleaning areas, as identified by the Overstrand environmental section. Kelp will be placed at kelp deposit sites in front of the fore-dunes. No kelp may be removed by anyone unless they have a permit issued by the DAFF. The frequency of removal will be determined by the operational manager of each area. ) Marine animal stranding or carcasses (to be dealt with by the Dept of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries – DAFF);
Within the next two years SANTA and Red Cross will be relo cating to a portion of this open erf on the corner of Magnolia and Aberdeen Streets.
) Oil, toxic waste or pollution (to be dealt with through the Overberg Disaster Management Policy). However, the maintenance of ablution facilities does not form part of this policy, but cleaning will be done according to a schedule determined by the operational manager of each area. Also, pet owners must still pick up their pet’s pooh, place it in a closed packet and dump it in the litter bins. The policy will also apply to beach cleaning initiatives undertaken by private/independent organisations, in areas outside of swimming beach areas. The report states that keeping the coast waste free, is a shared responsibility between the municipality, its citizens, user groups and external organisations. Identified swimming beaches ) Kleinmond: Palmiet, Kleinmond Blue Flag beach, Betty’s Bay (Silversands), Pringle Bay (main beach), Rooi Els. ) Hermanus: Grotto Blue Flag beach, Voëlklip, Kammabaai, Fick’s Pool, Langbaai, Sandbaai, Onrus-rivier, Hawston Blue Flag beach. ) Gansbaai: Pearly beach (entrance Beach Road, Castle beach, Caravan park), Buffeljachtsbaai, Uilenkraalsmond, Gansbaai (tidal pool), Stanfordsbaai, Kleinbaai (tidal pool), Blompark beach (Romansbaai). BLUE FLAG BEACHES The Blue Flag Beach status periods are: ) Grotto, from 1 December 2014 - 31 March 2015. ) Hawston, 15 December 2014 - 15 January 2015. ) Kleinmond, 15 December 2014 - 15 January 2015. The reason stated for the shorter period of the Hawston and Kleinmond Blue Flag beaches is the decline of visitors outside the peak season.

Leon Brand from EMR ambulance services said on Tuesday that the oncology unit is fantastic news for the Overstrand/Overberg. “We have many cancer patients that we transport on an almost a daily basis to Somerset West or Cape Town for treatment. “With a unit in Hermanus, these patients will be helped far quicker and without the extra strain of travelling.”

Filmmaker intrigued by wild horses, otters JANINE VAN DER RIET The wild horses of Fisherhaven and the Cape otters in the area intrigued a filmmaker, contracted to the television nature programme 50/50, so much, that he spent almost two weeks in the area filming them. Phillip Lennon from Coral Tree Films worked in conjunction with Clive Morris Productions to get footage and information on the wild horses in Fisherhaven and Rooisand, and the Cape otters in Betty’s Bay and Pringle Bay. Lennon does all his own research regarding content. “I find the story, film, script and edit it. Occasionally 50/50 will pass a story on to me.” He has been filming since 11 November and returned to Johannesburg on 20 November. He says the otters, although seen by many residents in the region, are difficult to film. “It took me three days to get 90 seconds of otter footage! Fortunately I interviewed residents who have taken amazing photographs of these animals and I shall use those pics in my programme. I also will be using some incredible underwater footage filmed by Jacques de Vos.”

Lennon was most intrigued by the history of the wild horses in Fisher haven.
Lennon says the wild horses intrigued him due to the history of the horses. “Most of my information was researched from a book by Prof Frans van der Merwe. Only when I started to speak to locals did I realise that there is an ongoing debate about these animals. My story will hopefully give viewers a balanced overview of the complex situation regarding the horses. “One question still remains unanswered however, and that is: Under who’s jurisdiction do the horses fall?” Lennon says the rugged beauty of
the Kogelberg is something he has always loved. “The scenery and light are a filmmaker’s dream. The wind can make things challenging when it comes to filming, however the beauty far outweighs other challenges. “Without the assistance of locals I would never have been able to get the amazing visuals over the last few days. People have been very generous with their patience and time. I really appreciate it.” ) 50/50 just launched their new season on SABC 3 on 16 November and Lennon’s documentary will probably appear in January.

Chef Eric’s dish that won Food Network’s best dish award.
Chef Eric Bulpitt and his wife Celeste from The Restaurant at Newton Johnson receiving one of Eat Out’s top 10 restau rant awards.
Double win for The Restaurant JANHENDRIK COETZER The Restaurant at Newton Johnson wine farm in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley not only received the Food Network best dish award during the 2014 Restaurant Week recently, but was also nominated as one of the 2014 Eat Out Mercedes-Benz top 10 restaurants. Chef Eric Bulpitt (37), head chef and coowner at The Restaurant at Newton Johnson, won the best dish award with an organic vegetable salad selection of raw, pickled and charred vegetables and herbs consisting of more than 30 components. “This dish was first created by wellknown French chef Michel Bras. He called it ‘Gargouillio’ which means ‘into the garden’ in French. Since then, many chefs around the world have recreated this dish, including myself,” says Bulpitt. He says he literally had to work his way up the food ranks over the past 15 years. “I didn’t study to become a chef at first. I first studied hospitality and only later became interested in food.” He adds that being a chef is very demanding and requires a lot of discipline. “When other people enjoy their weekends and holidays we are working!” He names well-known chef Thomas Keller as his food icon “since forever. Just like Keller, I believe in discipline, creativity, being focused and always being in control. And whatever you do in life, you must spend your whole life to master it”. Readers who have frequented restaurants over-the-berg will know Bulpitt from The Roundhouse – and prior to that, Jardine. The Restaurant at Newton Johnson opened last year, in the space previously occupied by Heaven restaurant. Bulpitt is in partnership with wellknown chef, George Jardine.

JANHENDRIK COETZER A charter vessel, Ocean Swift, will be in the Walker Bay at the Old Harbour on Sunday 23 November to install an underwater plaque, which will be unveiled by renowned oceanographer Dr Sylvia Earle on 6 December as part of the Hope Spot initiative. A two-day event on 6 and 7 December will be held at the parking area above the Old Harbour when Earle will be announcing Walker Bay as an official Hope Spot. One of the main attractions during this time will be the live streaming of the underwater unveiling onto a big screen, which will be housed in the Eco-Marine Village tent. Residents and visitors will not only be able to see, but also hear Earle as she unveils the underwater plaque. This act requires enormous techni-

With assistance from BS Divers and the support of CapeNature, South African Shark Conservancy and the Oceans and Coast branch of the Department of Environmental Affairs, BS Divers will install the underwater plaque on Sunday. According to Liezl Bezuidenhout from Nature Management at the Overstrand Municipality, they would like to inform the public that the installation will take place in a small section of the whale sanctuary. “At no point will the animals be disturbed or their space violated. We have a permit to do this and the Marine Living Resource Act will prevail at all times.” ) For any enquiries, Liezl Bezuidenhout can be contacted on 082 735 8910.

The crayfish season may be shortened, but one can still enjoy stories of the sea. Cecile le Roux, wife of Hermanus fishing legend Eugene, presented See Verhale at the Ski Boat Club summer supper last week. She included works by Uys Krige who lived in Onrus for many years, Hawston’s Willem Prince as well as excerpts from Sea Fever by John Masefield. These and other works by local authors made up a seaside equivalent of Herman Charles Bosman stories, some sad and some funny and some both sad and funny. The dinner was provided by boat club members David and Rose Plane and Ross and Tish James. The 30 guests at this cultural and historical event went home physically and mentally nourished and with a new appreciation of Hermanus’ talented people who freely share their talents with others.

OM celebrates job creation The Overstrand Municipality’s Local Economic Development (LED) department celebrated the creation of jobs and job opportunities during its first Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) Day held at the Moffat Hall in Mount Pleasant. The event, attended by high-ranking officials from the provincial Department of Public Works and Transport, officials and councillors from the municipality as well as EPWP beneficiaries, showcased the municipality’s EPWP projects and success stories. Certificates were handed to participants in the Community Fire Service EPWP project, the Ability EPWP project and beneficiaries of the Dibanisa Greening Project, partnered by the Grootbos Foundation. The day started on a high note with a squad drill by beneficiaries of the Overstrand Fire and Rescue Department’s Community Fire Service EPWP project. Chief Fire Officer Lester Smith said this project started in June 2012 with 12 EPWP beneficiaries to create fire breaks in the Overstrand area. The project was extended in June 2012 to accommodate all the reservists in the fire service. They work at various fire stations in the
Overstrand area as operational firefighters, under supervision of the full-time fire fighters. The project has created 30 full-time positions for the participants. The Ability EPWP project is aimed at providing a basic income to people with disabilities while at the same time allowing them to acquire a range of new skills and providing a service to other people with disabilities. The project was registered as an EPWP project from 1 August 2013 to 27 June 2014. Even though the EPWP no longer supports the project, it continues and the beneficiaries are now able to earn small incomes through projects such as candle-making. Solomzi Madikane, director of Local Economic Development and Tourism at the Overstrand Municipality, said that between 2009 and 2013, the Overstrand had consistently increased work opportunities through its EPWP programme. The municipality’s LED department is currently rated 6th in the country in terms of performance. The municipality annually spends R25 million, made up of budget allocations and government grants, on various job creation projects. The event was concluded with site visits.
Although work on the Hermanus Hospital was completed almost a year ago, it was officially opened with a ceremony and unveiling of a plaque last week. Following the R70 million upgrade over the last few years, the hospital now has 71 beds, a new pharmacy, administration block, emergency centre, maternity ward, paediatric ward and an additional theatre. The hospital’s admissions section and reception area, including a new help desk, were also added, together with a boardroom to cater for meetings and training sessions and a new out-patient department. The hospital is a Level One District Hospital. “Since 2013, a total of 36 new posts were filled. This kind of success requires stead-
fast leadership, and we have that in Minister Theuns Botha,” said Wilhelmina Kamfer, the director of the Overberg District Department of Health. According to Botha, the Hermanus Hospital has become a centre of excellence, especially since the completion of its revamp. “Complaints received have gone down to almost next to nothing. But the hospital is not only made of bricks and mortar. The excellence lies in the attitude of the staff that is employed here.” He further commended the staff in acquiring a Baby Friendly Accreditation, an international accreditation. “Our next challenge is to focus on the health of women and children to improve the health of every newborn in the first 1 000 days of his or her life.”
The Western Cape Minister of Health, Theuns Botha, visited the Hermanus Hospital for the formal opening last week. Unveiling the plaque in the “new” hospital are members of the Provincial Parliament, Mathlodi Maseko, Mnqasela Masizole, Dr Micheal Cardo, Erma Mostert (Hermanus Hospital CEO), Botha, MPP for community development An roux Marais, Marcellus Muthien (clinical psychologist), Diana Arendse (mental health nurse) and Sr Michelle Pieters (clinical nurser practitioner).
Die langverwagte onkologiesentrum sal beslis ’n reuseverskil in so baie lewens maak.

Carer carpooling needed for weekends I have a problem which I am sure must be shared by other employers of homebased carers. There are no taxis from Hermanus to Hawston in the late afternoon on either Saturdays or Sundays. This means that carers have to stand waiting on the Main Road in all weather and have to risk hitching lifts from strangers, often only arriving home nearly two hours after they have finished work. If they hire a private car to fetch them, it costs between R50 and R60, a large proportion of their daily wage and most of the people who employ them are not in a position to drive them home themselves.
Would it not be possible for the local taxi association to provide even one vehicle at, say, 17:30 to accommodate people who are offering an essential community service on weekends? An alternative would be for those who finish work at about the same time to meet at a central point and then share the cost of a private car. If any readers have found a solution to this problem or employ carers who would like to share private transport, I shall be glad to hear from them. (028 312 4455 or pamelawilliams@telkomsa.net)

All talk and no action on fireworks legislation?
SJ du Toit has made some improvement Esje (SJ) du Toit is now at Mediclinic, Hermanus. (Hermanus Times 2014/11/13 SJ in verswakte toestand). She has made some improvement with food by tube, however, she remains very frail and is talking a little. If you visit her, spend a short period with her as she tires easily. SJ values local news, having something read from the Hermanus Times and/or mentioning mutual friends. Please call Angela Heslop at 028 312 1663 or 072 609 8655 for updates as the hospital has been inundated with enquiries.
Fireworks as part of a controlled event can be an enjoyable and spectacular experience. However, if misused, fireworks can be very dangerous and disturbing. During the course of last week I have been disturbed by noises created by fireworks coming from the Proteadorp side since I reside in Palmiet, Kleinmond. Upon further investigation I discovered a store in Nemesia Street is selling these fireworks. As a shop owner and pet lover I am very much against human beings whose only goal in life is to have “fun” and never mind who or what has to suffer to achieve that. Year after year I witness the fear and terror that these fireworks inflict on defenceless animals. When I enquired at the local municipality of the above-mentioned store, it turns out that no application was received and that the store
operates without the necessary business license nor, does the store possess a permit or authorisation to deal in fireworks. What is the municipality’s actions in this regard to protect registered stores and the selling of these fireworks or was it only words with no action from Director Neville Michael in the Hermanus Times on 24 October 2014? I quote “Transgressors who light up on 5 November, or any other day bar New Year’s Eve, will face hefty fines and could even end up in jail according to Neville Michaels, director of Protection Services.” “Be assured that law enforcement agencies will take action against any person who acts irresponsibly outside the prescribed legislation.”

Help Animal Welfare I’ve noticed that if one wants to report a stray dog, you have to get in contact with Law Enforcement. They will then pick up the dog and take it to Animal Welfare, which seems a waste of time as Law Enforcement is paid by the municipality and Animal Welfare is not. The township has grown considerably and there is a need for everyone, including children, to be taught how to look after animals (especially to leave water for them every day). I think the municipality should support and pay Animal Welfare. I also think in the future one should build a centre for children in the township, where they can learn sports and other things. Also something for grownups – classes to learn things.

PINKISH LILY: Dorain Hakim from Paradise Park took this photo of a pinkish Arum Lily growing in her garden. This phenomenon occurred after the sugar water she leaves out for her birds spilled onto the ground. There was red dye in the water, which caused the lily to grow pink instead of white.
GP looks you through and through, can’t or won’t diagnose your case - then there are two. 2. Drs fail to agree, call in a surgeon – and then there are three. 3. More professionals look you o’er and o’er, this needs a heart man - and then there are four. 4. Drs wonder why you are still alive, summon a physician – and now there are five. 5. Drs truly in a fix, consult a radiologist - then there are six. 6. Drs, preparing for heaven, send you to a “chestman” - then there are seven. 7. Drs, working out your fate, need a urologist - then there are eight. 8 Drs, think now you’re doing fine, but just to make sure, invite a Haemotologist - then there are nine. 9. Drs, good and honest, means seeking one last opinion - and then there are ten. 10. Drs, standing around your bed, come to a decision and find you financially dead. And the rest of your life you live on water and bread.

About the submarine Being a whale sanctuary area, the Hermanus Times received numerous enquiries after a submarine was spotted in Walker Bay (between Hermanus and Gansbaai) on Wednesday morning. According to Captain Collin Sharwood from the South African Navy, the submarine is out on a week’s training and they are very aware of each sanctuary area along the coast. “We never really notify anyone unless we are moving into a sanctuary area, but in this case we were outside the restricted area. “We are also not allowed to come closer than a 300 m radius from the whales. We use an underwater radar to pick up whale activity, so when we detect one, we move away. A submarine is also very quiet and does not make any noise on the surface.” Wildlife photographer, Dave de Beer, who has a passion for whales and has spent many years observing and photographing them, also feels that one submarine is not going to cause any threat. “A submarine is very slow moving and will not cause any more danger than a normal fishing boat. I also believe that on a submarine they have the best possible technology to sensor any whale activity. “So I wouldn’t really make a big fuss about it,” said De Beer.”

Fun for the family with Color RunG ELBÉ VAN HEERDEN Make sure you are a part of the Happiest 5 km with the Color Run, which is taking place in Hermanus on 27 December. The Color RunG was brought to South Africa by Leon Swanepoel, who has been a resident of Hermanus for the past ten years. Tamheid is nou ’n algemene klagte.
In ’n spieël is jou linkerhand by voorbeeld jou regterhand. Kyk gerus self.

SA’s plant kingdom a gold mine Afrinatural Holdings, with Onrus-based CEO Adolf Joubert, has seen quite a run in the awards stakes over the past two years for its incredible growth in the field of exports.
Adolf Joubert, the CEO of Afrinatural Holdings, has seen quite a run in the awards stakes over the past two years.
But, says Joubert, the potential, when looking at the country’s plant wealth, has not nearly being tapped. The name “Afrinatural” is descriptive of the business which bulk supplies natural medicinal plant material and products from our natural heritage to the rest of the world – in particular to wholesalers and retailers in the phytomedicine, nutraceutical, pharmaceutical, cosmaceutical, functional food and beverage industries. “Our biggest breakthrough over the last year has been to be able set up supply lines with dependable suppliers of pressed oils for the international cosmetic industry. “We have grown our turnover four times over the last five years, and doubled it over the last 12 months. Currently 70% of our turnover is exports of which 50% is in the non-West markets (South America, Eastern Europe, Middle and Far East and Oceania). ” The company’s processing facility and warehouse is in Bot River, but the bulk of the jobs created are all over South Africa, mostly in rural communities where plant materials are collected and prepared. The processing of products entails washing and sterilisation, slicing and/or milling and then drying with warm air. Dried material is produced either sliced or in milled powder form. Besides the recognition of their endeavours by way of awards, Joubert says he is most proud of the fact that rural communities benefit, “in some instances more than half of export value lands in the pockets of individuals participating in collecting and harvesting the plants”. “As a country we are probably contributing

Again, two less that 0,1% of the world potential while we could and should be doing closer to 10% when looking at our plant wealth. “This indicates a potential of US$ 8 billion contribution to South African exports and rural communities – and then the world potential is growing annually at a rate of more than 10%!” Joubert states there is a growing acceptance that we need to move away from our dependence on pharmaceuticals to a more preventative, healthy lifestyle by restoring our immune system in a context where resistant viruses and diseases are increasing. “My biggest heartache is that South Africans, black and white, seem to find it difficult to be proud of their African origins. In our dress,TVviewing, music, butalsoinourhealth matters we tend to follow “The West” rather than looking at the wealth of our country’s own resources – also its plant kingdom. “Even when we have decided to follow a more natural lifestyle, we still import the most of our natural cosmetics and medicines from overseas and disregard what we have available in our own country. “But we cannot blame ordinary people if our

(We are part of BRICS, where all the partner states are proud of their roots and cannot be bothered about the Western system – even having formed their own IMF to replace the dependence on the West. But South Africa is the only odd member of the group).” Core lessons Joubert, with a background in business management and consultation, lists his core lessons as: ) you have to learn, as a small business, to protect your cash, whether it is little, or plenty. There is nothing worse than for your ship to sink because of too little available cash when there are so many opportunities. ) Do not look at facts alone. Look at what you believe in and work your backside off to achieve it. Nothing comes easy for any entrepreneur. “It is fulfilling to see, in our case, that after five years you are starting to make a mark and that people are acknowledging it.”

New courier company JANHENDRIK COETZER The postal strikes and subsequent delays experienced in the delivery of some postal items, paved the way for Johannesburg-based businessmen, Juan Janse van Rensburg and Ken Smith, to establish a courier company in Hermanus. This they did in July, although the official opening was only held on Monday 10 November, officiated by deputy mayor Rudolph Smith, who welcomed the establishment of new business in the Overstrand “as new businesses also mean new jobs for the area”. Their courier company, aptly named The Courier Guy, is part of a franchise. The Hermanus office is situated at the Royal Centre in Main Road, Hermanus. They have already seen a remarkable upturn in their business. “InJulywedeliveredjustover 200packages and almost 1 500 in October. This gives an idea of how we have grown over a short period.” As both men live in Johannesburg, they had appointed Rene van der Merwe as manager of the Hermanus branch. “At the moment we have three permanent staff with two vehicles on the road. We cover the whole of the Overberg,” said Van der Merwe.

BOOK REVIEW : A
Rumour of Spring A Rumour of Spring by Max du Preez is a thoughtprovoking, good read. A book that every South African should read for a perspective of where we have come from and where we are going in this complex country in which we live. The causes of the “squandered lost opportunities”, the “rising po litical temperatures”, the “continued inequality in society” and the personalities contributing are described in detail in this book by Max du Preez. As one of South Africa’s foremost jour nalists and one time member of the UDF, he has a rare insight into the recent history of the liberation struggle, building up to the state of the nation just prior to the 2014 elections. I sold a business in Johannesburg in the mid 90s and decided to buy a rundown apple farm in Elgin. Nelson Mandela’s vision of a “Rain bow Nation” where all will be able to prosper, was the main motive for buying a farm. I see the farm as a microcosm of a country. We pro vide opportunities, training, housing and infra structure, security, education and treat each other with dignity and respect, good perform ance is rewarded and mediocrity is not tolerat ed. We are on the right path, why are politi cians so wrapped up with power and self en richment? I would like to believe Max’s view that “winter will persist for a while, but there is a promise of an eventual spring”, but the way that Zuma got into power through the dishing out of fa vours with no accountability for delivery, will mean that those currently in the system and ben efitting from the gravy train will hang on tooth and nail to keep him there. For the next incumbent to be successfully elected, similar handouts will be required. Let’s hope the middle ground will prevail. REVIEWER: Andrew Gunn, engineer turned wine farmer. Together with his wife Rozy, Iona wine farm is the sole source of their focus, passion and joy.
Buffett se Berkshire Hathaway is ’n houermaatskappy.
It’s far better to buy a wonderful company at a fair price than a fair company at a wonderful price.” NOTA: Hierdie artikel behels nie uitdruklike advies nie. This type of incident also raises the question of supply chain management and quality control measures of both Overberg Foods and Fruit & Veg, who both ended up buying such a poor quality product. Daniel Bartlett, sales and buying manager at Overberg Foods’ responded by saying, “Overberg Foods is a distributor of hundreds of products to thousands of customers in South Africa. Life president visits HAWS to hold some kittens Lynn Penver is the Life President of the Hermanus Animal Welfare Society (HAWS) and she, together with Marjorie Wallace (renowned artist and wife of Jan Rabie, author), Maureen Poole (wife of Sir Everett Poole) and Tiny Cloete (wife of South African author Stuart Cloete), founded HAWS in 1969. Lynn has been expressing the wish for a long time to visit the kennels and to hold some kittens or cats. On 12 November this wish came true, thanks to the efforts of her friend Sue Taylor and Dennis Lyness of St Peters Church. She was welcomed at the kennels by Ilze Smith, the current HAWS chairperson and taken in her wheelchair to the cats, where Danny the kitten was happy to sit on her lap. Dr Sandy Waddingham, who assisted HAWS as vet even in those early days, was also present at
Lynn’s request. Years ago, Lynn was wellknown as she worked in the charity shop and was a long standing member of the committee. She was also involved in fund raising and the people of Onrus remember her as the person who collected each December at Rheezicht, accompanied by Tessa, her beloved Labrador. She also used to write a regular column called “Chit Chat” for the Hermanus Times. After her 90th birthday in March 2012, an article appeared in the Hermanus Times about her earlier life. She was involved in the 2nd World War in London, and a trained singer in Cape Town after her marriage to a South African. Smith says, on the day of Lynn’s visit to HAWS, they are not sure as who we the happiest, Lynn or little Danny taking a nap on her lap.

Rainbow of Hope Bakery now open ELBÉ VAN HEERDEN Freshly baked bread is now available at the Rainbow Trust’s new bakery, which opened this week. This is their second “social enterprise” business to complement their tunnels and worm farm located outside of Stanford. The Rainbow of Hope Bakery, situated at 15A Mimosa Street, bakes a variety of fresh bread daily. The bakery was made possible with a donation of R72 000 sponsored by the Hermanus Rotary Club in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Traverse City, USA and the Utopia Foundation in Traverse City. According to Dave Wreford, the general manager of the Hermanus Rainbow Trust, they were fortunate
to have partnered with Jeremy Barty, better known as the BREAD Rev. “BREAD Rev has a similar vision to the Hermanus Rainbow Trust in that they address poverty alleviation, better health and nutrition, by teaching the skills and knowledge of bread-making at competitive prices, using wood-fired ovens.” The selection of baked goods includes their unique signature loaf, which Barty had created specifically for the Rainbow of Hope Bakery. Their Rainbow Bread is made from 70% locally grown, twice stone milled whole grain flour with wheat germ still added. It’s a healthy and flavour-filled loaf. Aside from the Rainbow Bread they will also be selling white loaves, scones and muffins. The bread is baked in a wood-fired oven, which cuts the overhead costs
significantly. The bakers work in two shifts, and start baking early in the morning, with the first batch ready for lunch and the second just in time for dinner. According to Wreford the bread will be available for order as of this week, and starting on 1 December they will be launching the new Rainbow of Hope Shop and Food Club. The shop will focus on health and wellness, supplying highly nutritious, natural and organic foods including snacks, meals and drinks, like children’s lunch boxes and for parties. They are working on a website, called The Food Club, which will be up and running next month. This will offer a secure, online facility to order, pay, and have any of the tasty goods delivered (or collected).

The Enlighten Trust Robo Club took part in a First Lego League (FLL) regional competition held at the Cape Town Science Centre on Saturday 8 November and won medals and a trophy for the best programming of its robot. Before the ceremony some competitors took part in a dance performance. And, as it happened, an ET Robo Club member
known as “CJ”, was chosen as the best dancer. The ET Robo team had chosen to base their research on the influence of listening to loud music as a cause of hearing defects. The team made a video of their research and this will soon appear on YouTube. The ET Robo Club is an after school activity at Enlighten Education Trust

R96 000 raised during melodrama dinner Local veterinarian Dr Sandy Waddington from the Hermanus Animal Hospital had a dream to raise enough funds in order to spay as many animals as possible for people who are unable to afford this expensive procedure.
BIRTHDAY: Whillo of Annenberg, a German Shepherd from Onrus, turned three on 17 November. Her human mom always makes a big fuss about her birthday and makes sure that she enjoys the day with a doggy cake and present. Whillo also has a J9 Founda tion bracelet around her neck as they supported the foundation through buy ing a bracelet online to help research on motor neuron diseases.
Friends and family got together, and on Saturday 8 November, the first Dog Show fundraiser was held in Hermanus. The organisers set out to raise R30 000 from ticket sales for a three-course dinner and a melodrama put on by the Jol Emporium. There was also a raffle that brought in a total of R20 000. The winner was David Hepburn Brown, who redonated 50% of his winnings to the fundraiser. Together with other very generous donations they raised a total of R96 000.
All the funds raised will be used to buy the medication needed to spay the animals. The veterinarians do all the work for free. The organisers thanked Woolworths and Checkers who sponsored the event so generously, as well as all the other sponsors: The Eatery, DJ Sharklady, The Beanery, Sugarberry Distributors, Fruit & Veg, Spar, Newton Johnson, Gabrielskloof, Stanford Hills, La Vierge, Crystallum, Stock Tents, and Honingklip Brewery. They thanked everyone who kindly sponsored prizes , and applauded Helga Eichenauer and everyone else who worked days and hours on end to make Sandy’s dream come true. The organisers hope this will become an annual event. Any further donations can be made at the Hermanus Animal Hospital to boost the funds even further.

Anton and Nicole Verhoogt from the Fisherman’s Cottage in the Old Harbour are hosting a Movember Beer Festival on Saturday 29 November, with a tent in the courtyard, live music, fine food and a variety of craft beers on sale. The Movember movement is geared towards creating awareness around prostate and testicular cancer, and motivating conversations around men’s health. Anton decided to start this event as a friend was diagnosed with prostate cancer at the age of 28. “It seems that more and more people are affected by cancer and it seems that younger people are
diagnosed.” The Verhoogts will be donating 50% of the ticket sales to Cansa. “We are hoping to not only create awareness, but at the same time start a new annual event that can grow as an annual event to draw visitors to the area in the years to come.” Tickets to the event cost R50 and every Mo Bro, registered with the Movember movement, will get their first beer for free. Come and enjoy the Stanford Stumble The fourth annual Stanford Stumble is taking place on Saturday, 29 November at Stanford Hills Estate. The event entails a gentle meander (or a run, if you are that way inclined) through the vineyards, with teams encouraged to dress in their most outrageous outfits. What makes for even more fun is the fact that traditional water stops are replaced by wine stations en route and many new friendships have been forged along the way. After the race there is a variety of local live music, food, and a cash bar. Kids can enjoy face painting, jungle gym, trampoline, and rowboats on the dam. Registration for the run is from 15:00, and
the race starts at 16:00. A short auction, judging and prizes (also one for the best Movembo mo) will follow the race. The race entry fees (R50 for adults and R20 for children under 16), auction income and a portion of food and drink sales will go towards the Butterfly Foundation. This year they are supporting Anima Children’s Therapy Centre in Sandbaai and 100% of the funds raised will be handed to the centre, which caters for special needs children, ensuring they are able to learn to their full potential in a happy environment.

BAKKIE: HILUX IS STILL UP FOR THE CHALLENGE
Toyota Hilux Legend 45: Still tough FRANS LE ROUX Yes, you are reading a road test on Toyota’s newly launched updated Hilux-bakkie, aptly named the Legend 45. To the untrained eye, this latest incarnation looks pretty much the same as the outgoing model, but somehow Toyota has worked miracles by adding a few subtle styling tweaks. If memory serves me correctly, this is South Africa’s third offering of the Legend variant. Back in 2004 Toyota introduced the Legend 35 bakkie to the market. The same recipe which was successful then, is continued today. Some chrome, bigger wheels and a refreshed interior are all you need to sway potential buyers and keep the regular Hilux clientele. Somehow, even that 10-year-old Hilux Legend 35 is still rather goodlooking today. They are sought after and widely respected as proper high-mileage 4x4 vehicles. The new Legend 45 still has an imposing stance and a loyal following most other manufactures could only dream of. Underneath the new exterior upgrades, the underpinnings are mostly unchanged since its inception in 2005. Don’t think that this is in any way a bad thing. The popular old English saying goes: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” That is exactly what Toyota has done and their enormous sales figures are a testament to this decision. An updated exterior for the Legend 45 features blacked-out headlamps, front fog lamps, smoked tail lights and a stainless steel front nudge bar. At the rear you now have a convenient rear step bumper while purposeful multi-spoke 17inch wheels finish off the look. A towbar is also fitted for your conve-
Even though the current Hilux is behind in technology terms, Toyota will have no problem in selling the latest Legend 45 offering. PHOTO: QUICKPIC nience while Legend 45 badging and black side steps complete the list. The engine line-up too, is unchanged. You can choose between three different engines and body types. There are two petrol powered bakkies, namely the 2.7 VVTi 4-cylinder, which is rated at 118 kW/241 Nm. The powerful 4.0 F V6 is still in the mix and offers buyers a unique balance between power and driveability. Power for the V6 is rated at an impressive 175 kW/376 Nm. The diesel engines will probably sell the best and Toyota now offers two different models. The first being their ever-popular and very tough 3.0 D4D turbo diesel,
which still churns out a healthy 120 kW/343 Nm. Relatively new to the Hilux line-up is a 2.5 4-cylinder which produces 106 kW/343 Nm. The Legend 45 I picked up for a leisurely weekend cruise, was the 3.0 F turbo diesel (priced at R452 200) paired with an automatic gearbox. I must admit, I was apprehensive about driving a 4-speed automatic gearbox, but after more than 500 km behind the wheel, I was rather surprised by the experience. Being lucky enough to live on a farm, I thought there will be no better place to test the Hilux’s overall ability. Although my test vehicle only featured a rear diff-lock, I could
still easily conquer any rutted gravel roads. A particular bad stretch of gravel is called the Slent Road in the Perdeberg area. The road stretches over 10 km and gets hammered by trucks on a daily basis. I’ve travelled on this road with many vehicles in the past, and I am happy to report that the Hilux did not disappoint. Even without 4X4 aid, the bakkie still felt safe and solid – the main characteristic that all passengers agreed on. Executing the simple door-close test revealed that a reassuring thud was felt. Cruising at legal highway speeds, the cabin was quiet with acceptable
wind and road noise levels. The 4-speed automatic gearbox is designed with longer gearing in mind. At a 120 km/h, the engine was ticking over at just over 2 000 rpm. Admittedly the upshifts are smoother than the downshifts, but in general, I could live without the extra cog. This statement must be compared to the fact that most other manufacturers in the bakkie segment have opted for six or more gears in their respective automatic gearboxes. I can only assume that Toyota has stuck with four gears because of reliability and simplicity. My fuel consumption was slightly hampered by my selective gearbox as I achieved between 8-10 km/F. The interior is nicely updated too. Toyota has heard the buying public and the Legend 45 is now available with a much more pleasant, black interior. The seats are comfortable while the rear legroom is sufficient. I do enjoy the multimedia touchscreen interface and the system connects to your mobile phone in less than a minute. The audio quality is acceptable while the reverse camera is a nice touch, but I would have liked to have rear park assist too. With major players such as the Ford Ranger and Volkswagen Amarok sharing a sizeable chunk of the SA bakkie market, Toyota has done just about enough to keep on keeping on. The Legend 45 is the right blend of fresh facelifted materials, matched to a tried and trusted engine. Let’s all wait and see what the 2015 Hilux will have in store. Pricing for the Legend 45 starts at R300 200 for the 2.7 VVTi single cab 4X2 and rises to an eye watering R533 900 for the V6 4X4 automatic double-cab. The service plan offered is a 5 year/90 000 km plan along with a 3 year/100 000 km warranty. Intervals for services are set at 10 000 km. Visit www.toyota.co.za.

GWM’s pricebusting H6 City arrives in SA QUICKPIC The year is ending on a high note for GWM South Africa – the company recently introduced the most affordable full-size SUV on sale in the country (H5 City), will soon launch a completely restructured Steed line-up and is now also adding the highvalue H6 City to its South African model range. “The H6 City is the ultimate expression of our commitment to offering unbeatable value,” says brand manager Hannes Oosthuizen. “It is a completely modern, spacious and luxurious SUV that, at the price of R259 900, can’t
be rivalled for value.” As is the case with the H5 City, the new entry level H6 derivative appears just as neat and sophisticated as its more expensive siblings, with the only giveaway to its status being the lack of roof rails. It still boasts attractive 17inch alloy wheels, comprehensive colour coding, daylight running lamps and rear privacy glass as standard, lending the H6 City an upmarket appearance that belies its price positioning. Whereas the H5 City utilises a body-onframe construction method with rear-wheel drive, the H6 City boasts a unibody platform and front-wheel drive. During its development great emphasis was placed on the reduc-

MOTORPRESS South Africans have chosen the Jaguar F-TYPE Convertible as their favourite open sports car in the 2015 People’s Wheels Awards. South African voters in the online poll, which had more than 60 000 respondents, selected the F-TYPE as the best car in the “Sporty Drop Tops” category. Available in three different models, the F-TYPE combines Jaguar’s 3 F supercharged V6 and 5 F supercharged V8 engines with a monocoque aluminium chassis to deliver
a thrilling driving experience. F-TYPE is no stranger to winning, either. In addition to being awarded 2013 World Car Design of the Year, it has been widely acclaimed by the motoring media and garnered accolades across the world, from England to Germany, the Middle East, and now in South Africa. “F-TYPE has enjoyed tremendous popularity in South Africa, since it was launched,” said Richard Gouverneur, managing director of Jaguar Land Rover South Africa and sub-Sahara Africa. “This year it has been the bestselling sports car in its category,
showing that it’s not just popular among those who have voted in the People’s Wheels Awards.” The Jaguar F-TYPE Convertible was joined this year by its Coupe counterpart, including a high-performance R model. More exciting F-TYPE news is imminent as Jaguar returns to its performance roots, attracting younger and new customers to the brand. Winners in the People’s Wheels Awards are chosen by the public, via an online open vote. This year 132 finalists competed in 22 categories, ranging from entrylevel models to desirable luxury cars.

DOGS: Mr Countback stripped of his title, for now The DOGS played an individual stableford (log) / Globular Sphericals Alliance in Kleinmond on 18 November. The DOGS spent Tuesday being chased round Kleinmond by a bunch of 36 Swedes – a vegetarian’s nightmare. The Swedes gave in after 9 though when the pack started to lap them – another disturbing image. Mr. Jon Forsyth has temporarily been stripped of his official nickname after refusing yet again to undergo a countback. Regrettably, Mr Halifax had his birthday celebrations marred by yet another battery malfunction. The inaugural Globular Sphericals Alliance was won by Cruiser, Laser, Desert
Storm and Morse although the Inspector couldn’t quite figure out the MO. Stableford: 42 Jon Forsyth; 39 Art Rae; 37 Alan Smith, John Cheesbrough; 36 Morgan O’Kennedy, Dave Smith, Peter Theron; 35 Andre Franken, Koos Roelofse; 33 Dave Brittain, Alan Calder; 32 Mannes van Zyl, Ian Newman, Louwtjie Kruger; 31 Gary Wentzel; 30 Chris Martin, Peter Thomas; 29 Peter Sulley; 27 David Naylor, Dave Rade, Gordon Wilson, Sam Seal, Vic vd Westhuizen; 26 Geoff Crowther; 24 Dave Robinson, John Tunstall; Also ran: Keith Gillott. GOLF ROUNDUP : WITH JULIAN SHAW
Great golf at 32nd Walker Bay Classic This past week was a really special one in the Hermanus Golf Club diary. The club hosted the 32nd annual Walker Bay Classic. This challenge always attracts players from far and wide and is a real spectacle. Last year the weather played the largest role of the weekend and washed us out completely, but not so last weekend. The Walker Bay Sundowner We had a full afternoon field and the format was an individual stableford. Our winner of the day on a super 20 points was Ray Calitz. In second place, winning a count out on 19 points, was Marius Kleynhans. The club’s end-of-year tournament was held at the same time. All the winners of the sundowners throughout the year played off for a fully paid trip to Ou Baai. The winners here were stalwart André Sherriff and Gerhard Ferreira. Well done, guys and enjoy your trip. The Walker Bay Classic On Saturday all eyes turned to the heavens and although there were a couple of very light showers the weather held for a spectacular day of golf. A full field of golfers, with 312 players in total, took to the course. The format for the Walker Bay Classic is a bogey plus alliance with lots of visitors and members taking part. A special thanks must go to their Club Manager Sharon Sleigh and Captain Stephan van der Merwe who put this weekend together. And talking of great jobs: the course was absolutely immaculate. Well done to our course Super Malcolm Bromley and STM. The winners of the blue course on +23 were M. Hereldt, P. Basson, L. du Toit and C. du Toit. Winning on the green course were some regulars, Isak Krige, Floors Venter, Brian Taylor and vice- captain Joe Lyon also on +23, but win-
