Seun in koma ná botsing JANINE VAN DER RIET

Hy beweeg soms sy beentjie of arm, so ons probeer positief bly dat hy volkome sal herstel.” Morris Tshabalala, skoolhoof by Lukhanyo Primêr in Zwelihle, waar

Volgens waarnemende senior superintendent Patrick Africa, is ver-
) A young boy is in a coma after the vehicle he was travelling in was hit by a school bus. Woman throttled in her bedroom JANINE VAN DER RIET A 72-year-old woman was throttled and robbed in her home in Northcliff on Wednesday 14 May just after 18:00. The woman was walking towards her bedroom in her house in Patterson Street when she noticed a man inside the room. When he saw her, he grabbed her and
started throttling her. The suspect was apparently well-dressed. According to lieutenant Fadila September from the Hermanus Police, the woman’s husband was working in the garden when the incident occurred. When the woman started to scream for help, her husband ran inside the house, but the suspect ran away with a jewellery box with jewellery inside to the value of R2 000.
The victim’s husband immediately contacted the Hermanus Police and they arrived shortly after the phone call. Police and security officers searched the area for evidence and found the jewellery box in bushes nearby the couple’s home with all the jewellery still in the box. The couple did not sustain any injuries. No arrests have been made and the police are investigating a case of house robbery.

Proposals for public resort at De Mond closes on 30 May. In lieu of the proposal process to establish a public resort at the De Mond Caravan Park and adjacent land, council, at a recent municipal meeting, decided to extend the lease of a small portion of Erf 4831 (Hermanus) to the Klein Rivier Lagoon Park Body Corporate for a temporary period of 12 months. The renewed lease period is until 30 April 2015. The Overstrand Municipality published a notice (HT, 27 March) for the Request for Proposals to test the market appetite for financially sound and environmentally sensitive developers to enter into a long-term lease with the municipality to establish, manage, operate and maintain a public resort. The resort (which includes erven 4831 and 5327, De Mond Caravan Park, as well as the adjacent land of Klein River Lagoon Park and a launching area along the river front) must cater for the needs of the broader public, including tourist groups and commercial interests through the availability of, among other aspects, accommodation and conference facilities. The closing date for proposals is 30 May 2014. Council extended the current lease to
the Klein River Lagoon Park Body Corporate to ensure the leased area is not vacant during the proposal phase, which will eliminate possible squatting of illegal occupiers. The Body Corporate has the necessary means to attend to the security of the lease area to assist with this. The municipality stands to gain a lease amount of R6 437,79 (VAT excluded) per month (the current lease amount). This amount will escalate on 1 July 2014 by 10%. Market Square traders’ lease period extended by twelve months: The Market Square informal traders’ lease has also been extended by another 12 months for the period from 1 July 2014 to 30 June 2015. The municipality is currently working on an amendment of the Administration of Immovable Property Policy of the Overstrand Municipality (paragraphs 6, 7 and 10), which states that a public competition process (through means of a tender) must be followed whenever a lease extends longer than the period of one year. The extension also means that the municipality will still be able to collect a lease amount of R51 697,14, excluding VAT, per month for the 33 stalls while the amendments to the current policy are being put in place.
ATM fraudsters strike twice On Election Day (Wednesday 7 May) suspects robbed two people via ATM fraud and even took time to buy liquor with one of the stolen card afterwards. In the first incident, according to lieutenant Fadila September from the Hermanus Police, two suspects approached a man, pretending to ask for help, at the ABSA ATM at the Gateway Centre. The man had just finished his transaction and removed his card from the machine at 12:50 when the suspects grabbed it and fled the scene. The victim received an SMS from his bank a few minutes after the incident, stating that R3 000 had been withdrawn from his account. In the second incident on the same day, at
13:05, only 15 minutes after the previous one, a man was depositing money at the FNB ATM in the Hermanus CBD when he was also approached by a person requesting assistance. After the man had completed his transaction, the suspect grabbed his bank card and fled in a white Toyota Corolla. The man then received an SMS from his bank minutes later, stating that R1 500 had been withdrawn from his bank account and shortly after, that liquor worth R489 had been bought with his card at a liquor store. No suspects have been arrested and the public is again urged by the Hermanus Police not to assist or ask for help at ATMs.

Calves cause havoc and distress in town JANINE VAN DER RIET

as in and around town since last Wednesday (14 May). The calves were finally caught in the mountains above Hermanus Heights on Saturday by Overstrand Law Enforcement and members of the Hermanus Animal Welfare Society (HAWS). HAWS is now looking for the owner of the calves. “We think it may be a farmer in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley as the calves are stamped. We will try and trace the stamps if possible,” said Ilze Smith, chairperson of HAWS. HAWS has worked with many different animals, but to house five calves for a few days before releasing them to a “foster farm” until their owner claims them, presented a challenge. Judy Miller, volunteer at HAWS said the calves were housed in the run park of the welfare dogs. “Of course our dogs were very put out to have their run taken over, and they were very curious about the big creatures.” The calves have been transported to a nearby farm for safekeeping on Monday, un-
til the owner can be found. Contact the HAWS office on 028 312 1281 if these animals are yours.

Whale Crier gets a chance to see SA ELBÉ VAN HEERDEN The Whale Crier, Masixole Eric Davalala, returned to a warm welcome in Hermanus after touring the countryside on the way to the Tourism Indaba in Durban, and back, as part of the Hermanus On Tour initiative. His trip started with a visit to Cape Town for the inaugural World Travel Market (WTM) in Africa held in the Cape Town Convention Centre (CTICC). Travelling with Jeanette du Toit from Hermanus Online in their vehicle, dubbed Die Skip, they started their journey on Monday 5 May at 06:00. “We travelled to Mossel Bay, where we stayed over before heading to Port Elizabeth. From their we went on to Maclear in the Eastern Cape and finally reached Durban on Friday 9 May.” “It was my first time to visit Durban and Indaba. I have been to the Getaway Show in Johannesburg, but Indaba was so much bigger and I met so many people.” He went all out promoting Hermanus, the Whale Coast and the many activities in the area. “My job was a lot different from what I do in Hermanus. I had to tell people about the town, the activities, the accommodation we offer and to make sure people come here. If someone asked about what my job as the Whale Crier entails, I told them to come visit. “I told them I do not call the whales, but look for the signs that they are here and then let people know where to find them.” The group travelled back via a different route through the Eastern Cape after Indaba. “It was a wonderful experience to see the different places on the way. “I really appreciated everything the people from Hermanus Tourism and HOT did for me. It was a fantastic opportunity.” Davalala was very happy to be home as his daughter was only two weeks old when he left on tour. “She is my little whale crier and I’m hoping to start teaching her in a few years.”

‘We need to develop a town for all seasons’ CILENE BEKKER It is probable that one may have to brush up on fine tuning the ear to more and more tourists speaking with an American twang, or Indian or Chinese accent. Talking about the experience and overall perception gained during their Hermanus On Tour initiative to the Tourism Indaba, Blake Albert (Windsor Hotel GM, and delegate) said these markets showed the keenest interest but that dealing with large numbers of tourists from any new markets will require new insights on dealing with them. “The overall message gained at Indaba is that business is coming Cape Town way. There is even talk that the Indaba could move away from Durban and come to Cape Town”. Albert addressed Hermanus Tourism members at their monthly Meet and Greet held last Thursday at the auditorium. “Although there were less visitors to Indaba this year, more real business was done. Hermanus On Tour networked with 150 tour operators, 50 travel agents, 10 bus operators, 20 OTAs, and five airline companies . The cost of this Hermanus On Tour mission to Indaba totalled just short of R100 000, and was financed largely by the delegates themselves. Albert thanked the Tourism Bureau for backing their initiative and for the loan of Whale Crier, Eric Davalala, for eight days. Mary Faure, Hermanus Tourism chairperson and coordinator of FynArts, presented on the importance of working together on the tourism front to achieve the goal of sustaining Hermanus’s biggest GP (Gross Product) – tourism, throughout the winter months. This was the prompter behind FynArts being presented in the quiet June month.
“We need to develop a town for all seasons. And we also need to strengthen ties with Cape Town.” As an example, Faure referred to the Month of Photography (MOP) festival, created by the SA Centre of Photography. Now in its fifth year, it is regarded as the most extensive photographic culture event in SA. Like Paris Photo, The London MOP and the NY photo festival it includes the works of top photographers and artists plus educational exhibitions, workshops, master classes and social events such as club after-parties and a photo-quiz. The festival is geared towards the lay photographer, professionals, curators and collectors. Donning her FynArts hat, Faure spoke about how this festival has grown since its debut last year, and that it has the potential of becoming one of the biggest events on the festival calendar in South Africa. A FynArts advisory board has been formed in the interim, with members being Richard Cock, one of the foremost musicians and conductors, and director of Richard Cock Music Enterprises. Other members include Mandie van der Spuy, Marilyn Martin, Christoper Hope (who had a hand in starting the Franschhoek Literary Festival and Hermanus FynArts) and the Hermanus Tourism bureau treasurer Juan Pietersen doing double duty on the finance side. “The challenge for post FynArts 2014 would be to make the event sustainable,” said Faure. “It needs more sponsorship; it needs even more media coverage to help sell tickets; and it needs to employ administrative assistance.” Faure briefly sketched her ongoing “media tour” which included many radio interviews (with stations such as Classic FM and Fine
Music Radio). But to run FynArts and ensure future growth, Faure highlighted two other crucial aspects which require support from residents. “Volunteers, to assist during the festival. And accommodation. We desperately need more guest houses to be willing to give up a free room for the duration of FynArts, to help offset the costs of pulling in big name artists.” Volunteer tasks include sitting at art exhibitions; meeting musicians and showing them around or helping with door or tea duty. To offer your help, contact Gardean or Anneline at Hermanus Tourism on 028 312 2629.
Blake Albert, Mary Faure and Robin Lee. Lee presented on the Hermanus History Society’s (HHS) initiative to organise historical walks. These guided walks were offered over the Easter period as part of the “Make history visible” mission of the HHS. “Historical walks are a feature of any town that has a history and it is heavily marketed to visitors and tourists,” said Lee. “We intend to roll out a full scale walking programme in December. Ideally we would like to offer these walks on a regular basis.” Leaflets on the guided walks, Hoy’s Koppie and the Champagne Mile along the coastal path are available from the HHS, the tourism office or email: robinlee@hermanus.co.za.

Another 22 erven were approved on Site B next to the Mount Pleasant sports grounds.
Additional housing approved in Mt Pleasant ELBÉ VAN HEERDEN During a recent council meeting, a planning application to re-zone a portion of two erven in Mount Pleasant for 194 new homes was approved. The approval follows a lengthy public participation process, where the input from various interested and affected parties was received and considered. The two sites (both part of Erf 243), one next to the Mount Pleasant cemetery, of about 4,07 ha, and a second portion of approximately 0,74 ha next to the Mount Pleasant Sport Grounds, have now been re-zoned for the 194 planned homes. This includes 172 erven, two public open spaces on site A, with another 22 residential erven, open spaces and roads in the area next to the sports grounds (site B). The application to re-zone the erven for residential use, as well as the application to relax the street building line next to roads from 4 to 2 metres, and the lateral building lines from 2 metres to zero to accommodate semidetached dwellings on residential erven, was also resolved and approved. With the process having been completed, the council has taken all the recommenda-
tions into account and approved the re-zoning for residential use. There was some concern raised about the use of the erven adjacent to the sports grounds, as spectators have been using this portion for extended parking. Although the concerns were noted, it was decided that the greater need of the local community is affordable housing and should receive priority at this stage. The local heritage committee recommended that a wall of at least 1,8 m be constructed to ensure residents’ safety next to the proposed housing bordering on Schulphoek Road. Further provisions for the re-zoning of the two sections are the upgrading of the sewer infrastructure, water supply and storm water management. The further re-zoning of a section of site A, of around 1 hectare, for commercial use was suggested as the site is ideally suited for business use, with the new businesses already in place. It was noted that this section would not be developed in the near future, but would also further buffer the new housing project from high noise levels emanating from the R43. During the 30 April meeting, the re-zoning for the commercial use of this site was approved.
Stand gets gold at Indaba At the Tourism Indaba in Durban, the Cape Whale Coast’s team, represented by Overstrand Municipality’s Solomzi Madikane, Suné Greeff, Adinda Jantjies and Glenda Kitley (Gansbaai Tourism), once again won a Gold award for the design of the stand. Cape Whale Coast took a space on the Wesgro stand, together with the other tourism regions of the Western Cape. Municipal tourism manager Suné Greeff says they found the Buyers Zone (speed marketing sessions with international trade) of particular value in marketing the Overstrand.

To launch the beginning of a strategic partnership between the Hermanus Bowling Club and Gilbert’s Catering, a breakfast was held at the club on Tuesday morning. Enjoying the occasion were (from left) Guy Krige, Nancy Kulati, Melania Muchanyara, Gilbert Muchanyara and Blackie de Swardt.

Catering team partners with bowling club KERRY VAN RENSBURG Members of the Hermanus Bowling Club and the many visitors who compete in tournaments at the club, are in for a treat now that a new catering team has been appointed to serve up delicious meals and tasty snacks. The executive committee of the Hermanus Bowling Club has entered into a strategic partnership with Gilbert and Melania Muchanyara of Gilbert’s Catering and Take Aways. Gilbert was Learn to Earn’s first chef to qualify, and after much persistence, he now runs his own successful catering business/ restaurant. Gilbert’s Catering was situated at Learn to Earn’s Odd Cup Coffee Shop for three years, but this contract came to an end in December 2013. Gilbert’s Catering has built up a good reputation in the community and has secured a number of key clients which make use of their catering service. Gilbert will now be heading up the catering service at the bowling club which will involve the management of the club’s kitchen. He and his team will operate between the club and his own business. Many of the members had a taste of Gilbert’s cooking during the Senior Masters and Hermanus Classic tournaments held this past week. Blackie de Swardt, president of the Hermanus Bowling Club, says the club has very good facilities that need to be used to the maximum. “We welcome everyone to make use of our facilities,” says De Swardt. The executive committee encourages people to join the club, and say bowls is a sport that can be enjoyed by all age-groups. The club is also an ideal venue for weddings, private parties and conferences. The club has an extensive menu with an assortment of meal choices as well as a takeaway option. Besides catering for all the club’s tournaments, Gilbert will provide a meal of the day, and Sunday lunches will soon be reintroduced. De Swardt says: “We really don’t want to compete with other restaurants in town. We offer a club atmosphere and experience, and want to show people what a fantastic club we have.”
Vets need help spaying welfare animals for free KERRY VAN RENSBURG As many as 15 welfare animals are spayed or neutered for free every week at the Hermanus Animal Hospital. Local vet, Dr Sandy Waddingham, says this is her way of serving the community and to keep doing so, the Overberg Spayathon Fund needs to be topped up. “Our service is entirely free to the dogs and cats animal welfare organisations bring us.” The money from the fund is used to pay for the drugs needed to do the operations. Sandy says the spayathon account is independently and privately administered by Marius Furst. Account details: FNB Hermanus, Branch code: 200412; Account number: 62195511508.

EDITORIAL COMMENT
Heritage preserved While a lot has been said about the Old Harbour Museum’s board and management, without the foresight of one of the museum’s former curators and the board, Lemm’s Corner and the whole Fisherman’s Village would not have been preserved at all. In 1983 the museum’s board bought the Lemm’s corner area, which means that one of the oldest parts of town belongs to the museum. Development of this area went ahead, a ring wall was built to enclose the ground and lawn was planted to create a village green. The old buildings were renovated and let out as shops. Other buildings, additions and renovations have been undertaken over the years. If this precious historical heart of Hermanus had not been preserved, it would more than likely have been bulldozed by now and developed into a three story parking garage. So with Lemm’s Corner under the spotlight of late, it is good to see that the Old Harbour Museum’s board is going to upgrade the area. Proposals for the market, which will be outsourced, can be submitted for consideration.
Sê so 1 m by 1 m teen R1 000 – vir jou plotjie. Of dit nou jou man, vriend, hondjie of papegaai is.

Fees main reason why doctors leave SA The recent article complaining about Hermanus doctors’ fees applies. Putting a value on a doctor’s service remains a challenge and there have been many formulae applied worldwide with varying degrees of unhappiness. Curiously, doctors seem to take the brunt of these complaints. I have never seen questions asked about the fees of lawyers or chartered accountants splashed over the newspapers. Perhaps doctors, being in a altruistic, caring profession are expected to work merely for the satisfaction their profession promised during their seven to fifteen years of training with minimal remuneration, and not for profit? I recently noted the “posts and petties” of a legal account to be more than that of a specialist consultation. On querying this, as documents are sent electronically, and not posted generally, I was informed it’s just “sommer the way it was and we have not changed it”. The South African medical model has evolved over many years with a blend of patients covered by various medical funds and those without any private medical cover and reliant on the teetering state system. The rate of fund contributions over the last 20 years has consistently outstripped the rate of increase in doctor’s payment over this period. The nett result is that doctors’ fees in South Africa lag by a huge margin the fees paid in most other first-world countries. A consultation of R287 in SA’s equivalent in the UK at a private specialist would be R4 000 for the same service. This is the main reason I believe doctors continue to leave this country in droves. Two examples exist of GPs recently leaving Hermanus to work only a few months in Canada and earning in excess of a year’s income in South Africa. It’s also the reason the swallows elect to have most of their elective medical consultations and procedures in Hermanus. Besides the low fees doctors are more accessible here. Hermanusites, look at the bill from a plumber, electrician or locksmith next time you have the smallest job done and compare the fee with that of your doctor! Why should the private doctor have anything to do with your medical aid? It’s yours not his or hers. There are about 900 permutations of medical plans and options available to us with confusing names like Premier, Platinum, Pro-secure, Es-
sential, Classic, Standard, Basis, Core and my favourite Blue Door!,…all, I’m convinced, designed to muddy the water further. There is no such thing as a medicalaid rate. It’s the rate your medical aid chooses and this is a thumb-suck amount not based on any cost studies. (These were ignored in 2009 by the Board of healthcare funders and remain the subject of a protracted court case.) Some doctors have elected to sign contracts with certain medical aids but this is the exception. The practice costs are huge and ever increasing. The increase in medical defence fees has been massive with some specialists paying R30 000 a month for this cover. “Claim from my medical aid” is a phrase one hears all too often especially in Hermanus. Try that in any of the larger cities in SA and see the response. It often amazes me how willing we as medical professionals are to accept non payment or the promise of an “eft” as the patients depart. Suggest that at Pick n Pay or Woolworths during your next shop and see the response the cashier gives you. And, claiming from a medical aid is no longer a simple process. Granted, there is much electronic communication between practices and medical funds but try and follow up a claim and see how far one gets? The calls to medical aids are often close to an hour with transfers between authorisation, motivation, claim departments and their supervisors. The phone accounts monthly are up 300% on those two years ago and many practices are forced to employ staff simply to follow up claims on a daily basis. There have sprung up a number of companies who claim fees on behalf of doctors with their cut of often 10% further diluting the professional fees. The writer’s experience in the provincial hospital is concerning to all of us here, especially as the hospital has shunned the offers of the private specialists to work there as this is seen as a “second-tier hospital without a need for local specialists and the patients can be transferred to Worcester hospital”. Outside specialists do visit the local hospital but seldom more than monthly and it amazes us that, given the proximity of the two hospitals and the willingness of the local doctors to be involved in the hospital, the offers have been largely shunned.
A DOCTOR IN HERMANUS
ONRUS CLOSE-INWONER

DEE BACK, FUNDING COORDINATOR OVERSTRAND HOSPICE
This week’s cloudy conditions will make way for a sunny Saturday, but by Sunday it is again overcast with the possibility of light rain. We can look forward to another sunny day on Tuesday, followed by cold and rain until Friday.
Spraying harmless rain spiders is cruel As part of the local youth of Hermanus I was really disturbed by the actions of an older lady on Saturday 17 May when I was relaxing at the table located near Jan Rabie tidal pool in Vermont. I heard the sound of a spray can and when I turned around I saw her spraying the common Cape rain spiders in the bushes with a can of insecticide. Once she had sprayed them dead, she returned to her car and drove off. I was deeply disturbed by this complete random act of cruelty to calmly kill an innocent rain spider known as the “Huntsman” spider that was not near her, or the fact that it was no threat to her whatsoever. In humans the bite is no more dangerous than a bee sting causing a burning sensation and swelling for a few days. Recovery is spontaneous and complete. With a life span of a mere two years, I see the precious jewels of nature harmless and inoffensive. The rain spider is simply a sheep in wolfes clothing and to disturb nature in such a way is simply unforgivable and sadistic. If they creep you out, just stay out of their way. They are completely harmless and are
9
actually serving a purpose in the environment, otherwise they would not come back to the same place every year. To the lady I would like to say your random act has viciously disrupted the balance of nature. There are a lot of people who do not like birds or animals, but they don’t just simply kill them. Many of the tourists that visit Hermanus come and admire our mountains and seafronts. They also stop to admire the beautiful rain spider. It’s not like they invaded you or your husband’s personal space. I recently cast my vote in our country of democracy and will use my voice to protect nature against the savages of society who want to destroy nature no matter how small or insignificant they seem to be. We all have a right to life. Whether you like it or not, they have an equal amount of right to be here just like you and I have. So take some advice from somebody young, do not go around killing things that cannot defend themselves.
NATURE LOVER, CANDICE
Appreciative of Hermanus’ courteous drivers We live in Kleinmond and visit Hermanus on a regular basis. We are most impressed with the motorists in your town. On many occasions now we have walked along your streets, and when wanting to cross over at a zebra crossing, oncoming cars have stopped to allow us to cross over in safety. This is a real source of appreciation and we would like to thank you all for obeying the rules and being concerned.
RAE AND ANN GORDON KLEINMOND
Rudi Fraser, Overstrand traffic chief expands on the rules regarding traffic circles: The small design traffic circles in Hermanus, as you enter the circle there is a yield sign, which means the motorist needs to give right of way
to pedestrians wanting to cross that specific crossing. But, as the motor vehicle enters the circle on his way out there is no yield sign for the motorist, as, exiting a circle, the pedestrians now need to give right of way to the vehicle. Pedestrians in general do not know how the concept works and always believe that they have right of way, which is incorrect. This matter was also brought under the attention of the road engineers previously who designed these circles and the traffic’s concerns were put on the table. On numerous occasions traffic officers stood at these circles to show pedestrians how to use these pedestrian crossings, so an educational approach was also followed to alert pedestrians of the use of traffic circles.
Amper net so lekker soos laas naweek.

Let law and order prevail in Hawston, F’haven Hermanus Times 3 April 2014 – thirteen people found guilty and sentenced to 18 months imprisonment suspended for five years provided they are not involved in public violence or possess guns. This paltry outcome despite all the havoc wreaked at Hawston and on the R43 road in November 2012: Police attacked by a crowd of residents, a teenager and police officer injured in the gunfire, 7 police vehicles burned, a traffic officer’s private car torched, the dog unit set alight (thankfully dogs rescued), petrol bombs thrown at tow vehicles, R43 road burnt in several places and millions of rands of damage. Travellers had to drive the difficult Karwyderskraal Road to and from Hermanus and some waited at Vermont till midnight to get home. All this due to rumours that police played a role in the death of a young unlicensed diver / alleged poacher who sadly drowned whilst being apprehended. On 2 May 2014 police confiscated poached abalone in Hawston – community members stoned police, burned tyres on the R43 and stoned and shot at a car driven by a young man from Fisherhaven (he thankfully escaped injury but the car was damaged) and again the road was closed for a few hours. In June 2013, Judy Erasmus of Hermanus suffered stoning (luckily unhurt but her car damaged). A police spokesperson said it was not possible to permanently man the R43. However strongly the people of Hawston feel, innocent travellers are not to blame. A forum was created to speak for frustrated community members (Jené Adendorff, Nov 2012), but what has happened to it? When will discipline be established? The impact on motorists and residents is considerable; several other people have suffered stoning / injuries over the past few years (a young girl also from Fisherhaven ended up in hospital with glass in her face, she could have lost an eye). Many are nervous driving to and fro, especially at night.
Will someone have to die to effect change? I have often heard the refrain from those in Hawston that “we are not all like that”. Of course not, there are many good and law-abiding folk, but at some point, parents, priests, teachers, community leaders, law enforcement and the municipality must take responsibility. The potential is huge for this little village and over the years much money has been pumped into projects, some of it wasted, time and again. Several years ago the police offered to man a satellite station in Hawston. The municipality allocated ground but when it was suggested to the ward committee that the mayor’s annual endowment for Ward 8 be used to start with a small building, this was rejected. Play swings were more important. Apart from the above, the Fisherhaven slipway and adjacent beach at “Seaway corner” is used for partying, sometimes until the early hours, leaving broken glass and litter, including condoms. This is not civilized behaviour and impacts negatively on Fisherhaven. The impact of poaching on the Bot River estuary is significant. Lobbying by “disadvantaged fishermen” for regular opening causes ecological distress to this important body of water. When well-known investors proposed a golf development between the two towns (for both the rich and the poor) this was scotched by some in Hawston. Why? The benefits would have been for all, why were they allowed to get away with their socalled objections? Now the developers no longer care. Yes, Hawston was/is minderbevoorreg but being disadvantaged is not a recipe for lawlessness, and in any case there are many who certainly are not. The HawstonFisherhaven area could be transformed; it’s a good place to live. Contributed by someone who has for years more than tried to assist both the Hawston and Fisherhaven communities.

Joyce (89) looking for dog lover to take over I want to ask if there is anyone who would like to take over feeding the township in Zwelihle’s dogs twice a week. I generally go on a Monday from about 09:00 until 17:00 and on a Tuesday from 09:30 until around 14:00. The Hermanus Times Operation Brakkenjan delivers dog and cat food over the weekend and leave them in my garage; I then go and pick up a few scraps from three different restaurants on a Sunday. At the moment, my helper puts all the food into plastic boxes (pellets mixed with scraps) on a Sunday and I deliver the food on a Monday and Tuesday. After I get back, my helper washes the plastic boxes that the food was in. I have been doing this for 17 years, but as I am now 89 years old, I get a bit tired. I don’t feed the whole township, but I go

to the dogs that I have been feeding for a long time. I leave a few pellets for some of the dogs with their owners or neighbours to feed them the rest of the week. The person willing to take over from me must be a great dog lover. I also check on the dogs’ water bowls, as they are often left with nothing to drink. I also feed cats. If anyone is interested I think the best thing would be to accompany me so that you can see where I go and what I do. Most of the dogs wait for me every week, so I feel I can’t just leave before I get someone to take over from me. For some of the dogs, the only food they get, is the food I feed them twice a week! Contact me on 028 312 2978 and the best time to phone is in the evening.

Did you know: This beauty of the fynbos with its unusual colour combination of sky blue and glowing pink is Lebostemon fruticosus, a member of the Borage family. The Afrikaans name agtdaegeneesbossie, meaning eightday-healing-bush, refers to the belief that this plant could heal all sorts of ailments within eight days. This little shrub was a much respected herb of the early Cape people. A tea made of the leaves drunk first thing in the morning was said to be a sure cure for ringworm in humans and animals – hence the other Afrikaans common name, douwurmbos.

SAPD-honde kry nuwe hokke

Rooiels’s thirst to be quenched for next 20 years The new 500 kF Rooiels reservoir has increased the storage capacity of potable (drinkable) water for this community to 730 kF, ensuring that their demand for the next 20 years will be met. This project of R4,3 million, fully funded from Overstrand Municipality’s own resources, also included the refurbishing of the old reservoir, the construction of two new pump stations – one to bring the water to the reservoir and the other to ensure enough pressure to service higher lying properties – the installation of a generator, a single power connection in the place of the two that previously served the facility, security fencing, gabions to stabilise the ground walls and landscaping. Overstrand Mayor Nicolette Botha-Guthrie also announced at the official opening that the main bulk water pipe line to the reservoir will have to be rerouted after it was severely damaged during last November’s flooding. An environmental impact assessment has already been conducted and submitted to the provincial authorities for approval. Hanré Blignaut, Overstrand’s deputy director for water, said the remoteness of the site, the confined space they had to work in and last year’s exceptionally lengthy and wet

Estate agents and staff from Keller Williams, as well as staff members from Hermanus Child Welfare, gathered at Jubilee Haven on Thursday 8 May to celebrate this community initiative and the work that has been done to revamp and refurbish this foster care home in Hawston. PHOTO: KERRY VAN RENSBURG
A festive party table set up for Red Day at Jubilee Haven KERRY VAN RENSBURG The nine children who live at Jubilee Haven in Hawston were surprised and somewhat overwhelmed when they arrived home on Thursday 8 May. The house, which is a foster care home run by Hermanus Child Welfare, was overflowing with estate agents and staff from Keller Williams Realty who, along with sponsors and community members, had spent more than a week giving the home a top-to-toe makeover. In celebration of the work that had been done as part of Keller Williams’ Red Day initiative, a festive party table was set up in the dining area to welcome the children back home. While the home was being repainted inside and out and receiving its major revamp, the children were temporarily accom-
modated elsewhere. Pat McLoughlin, director and principal at Keller Williams Hermanus, says they chose to partner with Hermanus Child Welfare for their Red Day project which stands for: renew, energise and donate. Many businesses and individuals contributed to the success of the project, which is still ongoing. The children living at Jubilee Haven range in age from the eldest teenager who is 16, to the youngest child who is 5 years old. Jody Swartz, the house mother at Jubilee Haven, says she is very happy about all the improvements to the house. Decor items that are still needed include storage crates for the playroom, a play table, continental pillows and pillow cases, fitted single sheets, small mats, bedside tables with extra drawer space and bean-bags. Call Magriet at 083 395 9134 for more information.

Afrikaanse gedigte voorgelees
Elizabeth Pienaar surrounded by some of the guests who shared the interview session with her at the Book Cottage. From left are Joey Botha, Hettie Maree, Elizabeth, Jacqui Zaina, John McKinnell and Zelda Miller.
Die boek is in Afrikaans beskikbaar as Bobbie.
A captivating story of man’s best friend CILENE BEKKER At an intimate gathering on Saturday afternoon at the Book Cottage Elizabeth Pienaar, author of Bobby, shared some insights about the events that led her to write the book. The book features two young girls, Natasha and Jessie, and two Alsatians, Bobby and Dash. When Bobby’s beloved owner Natasha dies in an attack, he’s passed on, and then abandoned. When Dash, Jessie’s beautiful Alsatian, dies of leukaemia she is griefstricken. But in another world, Natasha and Dash won’t give up and nudge Bobby and Jessie towards each other – all they need is one willing heart, one act of kindness, to open a pathway. The Bobby part of the story is based on real events. Elizabeth expanded: “I was looking for a house to renovate (in Johannesburg) and was told
about Bobby by the estate agent. “I was captivated. I then followed his story through the estate agent and kept contact with the animal shelter.” The Jessie and Dash characters are based on Elizabeth’s own emotions and grief, stemming from the time her father passed away (Elizabeth was 13 years old at the time) and her own dog who had died of leukemia. Elizabeth at one time had also owned a white Alsatian (in the story Dash is a white Alsatian). The story is touching, and interestingly told in that Elizabeth gives Bobby a voice. Bobby ‘talks’ about his owner, Natasha, how if only he had been with her he could have saved her, of being left behind when Natasha’s parents decide to sell their house and move on, and of his time in animal shelters. Although aimed at young adults, the story is ageless and will resonate with those who have loved, lost and found man’s best friend.
THE MOMENT by Douglas Kennedy In this, his tenth novel, biographical details of Kennedy’s own life are more in evidence than in any of his other nov els. The protagonist is a middleaged American man, Thomas Nesbitt, who retreats to a small cottage in Maine fol lowing the collapse of a long, unhappy marriage. His solitude is disrupted when a package is delivered postmarked Ber lin, and this instantly transports Nesbitt to this enigmatic city where he spent several months as a young man 25 years ago. Here, against the bleak background of a divided Berlin during the Cold War, Nesbitt meets an East German woman named Petra Dussmann and falls profoundly in love, not only for the first time but also, as it turns out, the last.
The story is told by a disillusioned man who has to confront the futility of regret. His beloved Petra was not only a refugee from a police state but also a victim of the unspeakable horrors perpetrated by die Stasi. Nesbitt is never able to fathom en tirely the tragedy at the core of Pet ra’s life – until the package arrives. With this novel Kennedy man aged, once again, to keep me spell bound as his characters experience the lifechanging force of real love under very difficult circumstances. While their relationship blooms, there is a shadow of foreboding as Nesbitt becomes ever more entangled in the Cold War web of suspi cion, intimidation, lies and espionage. As the tension builds the novel becomes a real pageturner. REVIEWER: Hedda Mittner

DANSMANEWALES BY KASKARDAG: Hoërskool Hermanus se jaarlikse kaskardag is Vrydag voorafgegaan deur dansgroepe uit elke klas.
LIMITED EDITION: SMALL BAKKIE MAKES EVEN MORE SENSE
Nissan NP200 now even more Loaded QUICKPIC Nissan’s popular NP200 half-ton bakkie is now available in an exciting new limited edition. The locally-built and developed Nissan NP200 Loaded features a host of value-adding enhancements and special additions, and will be available in a production run of just 300 units. Building on the NP200’s already impressive credentials, the new NP200 Loaded seeks to enhance its lifestyle and sports appeal with visual upgrades forming the essence of its unique list of accessories. The Nissan NP200 is a dual-purpose vehicle, providing great versatility and practicality for business use with features including an 800 kg payload, a standard rubberised load box (1 250 F) and a specially-designed tailgate which can handle 300 kg – a feature common in much larger pickups. The tractable petrol engine in the Loaded limited edition makes load-lugging easier, with peak torque (200 Nm) available relatively low down in the rev range (3 000 rpm), matched to short ratios for the first three gears. Personal use is enhanced by the smarty-designed and spacious cabin, which features numerous storage spaces for a practical and comfortable lifestyle vehicle. NP200 product manager at Nissan South Africa, Isa Giunta, comments: “The Nissan NP200 features class-leading specification, high quality levels and a tough personality. Features like this have seen over 63 000 NP200’s sold to date, proving time and again it is South Africa’s favourite half-ton bakkie. The large cabin and smart design has also been highlighted by our customers, who find the NP200 to be a reliable
Personal use is enhanced by the smarty-designed and spacious cabin, which features numerous storage spaces for a practical and comfortable lifestyle vehicle. PHOTO: QUICKPIC and great value-for-money bakkie with low service and parts costs. “In the IPSOS product quality research survey, the NP200 was awarded the Overall Satisfaction title for its segment, two years in a row. The revered Kinsey report also points out that parts pricing is a very strong NP200 trait. In addition, the NP200 builds on the legendary reliability and strong South African ties created by its forebear, the Nissan 1400 Bakkie. “We are delighted with the Nissan NP200 Loaded limited edition,
which rides proudly on existing NP200 qualities and offers an exciting and sporty new look, while maintaining a great price.” Loaded with value-adding equipment As the name suggests, the new NP200 Loaded has been fitted with smart extras while maintaining toplevel value for money. Based on the 64 Kw/128 Nm Nissan NP200 1.6 with air conditioning and the safety package (ABS and dual airbags), the NP200 Loaded is available exclusively in white, and features special
“Loaded” branding which incorporates silver and red accents in the decals, carpets and seats. Loaded-specific equipment inside includes full leather upholstery, a front-loading CD/MP3/WMA/radio/USB/aux and Bluetooth-enabled audio system, special black carpets and remote central locking. On the outside, stainless steel nudge and sports bars, black roof rails, a black tonneau cover and speciallydesigned Nissan-Concept alloy wheels complete the Loaded look. All accessories have been specifi-
cally developed and approved for the NP200 Loaded and do not affect the vehicle’s standard and classleasing six-year/ 150 000 km warranty. Totalling a value-add of 29%, the extras fitted to the Nissan NP200 Loaded represent exceptional value and unique appeal, with a resultant vehicle price difference below their R25 000-extra worth and one which still makes the NP200 Loaded a class-leading value proposition. The retail price, including VAT, of the Nissan NP200 Loaded 1.6 is R166 500

Honda’s top performers honoured QUICKPIC Honda Motor Southern Africa recently honoured its top-performing dealerships at a glittering ceremony at the Fairmont Zimbali Resort in Kwa-Zulu Natal. The highly sought-after awards recognise and reward outstanding achievements within the Honda SA dealer network, while acknowledging the importance of overall excellence in an ever tougher retail environment. “Each member of the dealer network has played a vital role in Honda meeting its
sales targets over the last financial year, and these awards recognise their commitment to the Honda brand,” says Graham Eagle, director of sales and marketing at Honda Motor Southern Africa. “A key element of achieving continued growth in SA will be to ensure that the customer’s experience of the Honda brand is overwhelmingly positive. “We can only achieve this if our dealers, across our entire product range, continue to deliver to the highest possible standards,” he added. With Honda’s dealer network divided into five size and performance-based cat-
egories, five overall dealer of the year awards were presented to Honda Auto Westrand, Honda Auto Tygerberg, Honda Auto Helderberg, Honda Auto Klerksdorp and Honda Auto George. Honda Motor Southern Africa has named Honda Auto Helderberg its 2013 dealer of the year. Top honours were also given to Wernich Stander and Arno Potgieter who received sales manager and service manager of the year respectively. The Honda Auto Helderberg team were rewarded for their hard work and exceptional performance during 2013.

Volkswagen Sasolracing set to kick up dust in round three The Volkswagen Sasolracing team heads back to the stages for the third round of the 2014 championship on Friday and Saturday, 23 and 24 May. For Gugu Zulu and Carl Peskin, the Pretoria Motor Club (PMC) Gauteng Rally marks their 50th rally start together. This is their first season together in the S2000 category and the PMC event marks their third start together this season. There are 172 km of rally stages waiting for the Volkswagen Sasolracing team at this third event, the last for the team before they tackle the Volkswagen Rally in July. The PMC event will be centred around Rallystar in the Bapsfontein area with five stages taking place on Friday and a further six on Saturday. Henk Lategan and Barry White return to action in the South African championship, seeking to improve on their current fifth place overall. Lategan and White compete both nationally and internationally in selected rally events in Europe. The RallyStar Super Special stage will take place at this event, which sees two cars tackle the stage at the same time, a regular feature of the PMC event, which pits the teams against one another in a head-to-head battle to thrill spectators. Hans Weijs jr and Björn Degandt will return to South Africa for the PMC Rally to pilot their Volkswagen Sasolracing Polo S2000. The pair are just outside of the top three in the championship standings.

The DOGS held an individual stableford (log) on 20 May in Kleinmond. The Dogs were privileged (some say forced) to play off the spectacular elevated tee on the 12th and, as they admired the stunning view, the hills were alive with the sound of wheezing and gasping for air. For some, it was one of their favourite things but Braveheart, Hugh and The Naked Chef fell into the Von Trapp of not checking the tee markers. The Man of Many Faces climbed every mountain to finish at the top way out on his own like a lonely goatherd – another of his costumes. Laser lost his sunglasses only to recover them soon after on his nose – Doh oh dear! Simphiwe is the first learner ever from Qhayiya to earn Boland colours. He represented Boland at the Western Cape Athletics Championships in March and won a bronze medal in the 3 000 m event. Calata, Qhayiya Secondary’s athletics coach, is very proud of Simphiwe. Thanks to SuperSport, Simphiwe received a big hamper full of goodies as April’s winner. At the end of the year a winner will be chosen out of all the monthly finalists at a gala function.
