NO! to Grotto amphitheatre CILENE BEKKER

Residents and homeowners of Voëlklip are dead set against the building of a 340-seat amphitheatre and a new double storey restaurant at Grotto beach. This was made abundantly clear at a workshop in the municipal auditorium on Saturday morning. Objections against the proposals had been raised in the first instance with the Overstrand Municipality by the Grotto Beach Action Group (GAG), when a small number of residents immediately adjacent to the Grotto area received notice of this planned upgrade from the municipality in March last year. (A notice also appeared in the HT). The development proposals were compiled on behalf of the municipality, which owns the land. The project entails, in part, the rehabilitation of a section of the wetlands in the Grotto area and the construction of an amphitheatre for open-air music concerts in the public braai area (Piet se Bos). A new double storey restaurant is also planned on the spot where the old Nautilus used to be before it was destroyed by fire years ago. The idea was to subsequently convert the site of Dutchies restaurant back to a curio/clothing kiosk. Around 100 residents and homeowners attended the workshop on Saturday morning. This session was arranged as a further opportunity for residents and homeowners to voice their opinions and better un-

derstand the proposed plans and legal process. Until now, GAG has received 59 letters from home owners in support of their action to oppose the developments. The proposed amphitheatre (Piet se Bos) and restaurant development came under fire at the workshop on Saturday. It was attended by around 100 Voëlklip residents and homeowners. The Basic Assessment Report is avai lable on www.overstrand.gov.za/Public Interest/Notices. bers, address and erf number). Bruwer did not progress very far with his presentation, as attendees deemed the whole process flawed and out of order. “If the vast majority is against it, why does the process even carry on?” Pickstone-Taylor said. “If all agree that the amphitheatre is out of order, let’s rather talk about other ways to upgrade or rehabilitate the area. An amphitheatre in the middle of a prime residential area is out of order. And if we need to go all the way to fight this, our lawyer will do that,” said Hoogenhout. Zybrands then set about establishing and summarising which aspects of the proposed developments the attendees are comfortable with and

) PIET SE BOS / AMPHITHEATRE There was no objection to the restoration or rehabilitation of the wetlands, fynbos and milkwood forest, nor to the boardwalk. It was agreed by those present that Piet se Bos remain a public area where picnics can be held, but that more lawn and shade should be provided. The area should be kept as natural as possible. If shade is to be provided by trees, these should be planted in consultation with the Botanical Society. Continued on page 4

Slegs 12 motorongelukke is by Overstrand Verkeer aangemeld, sonder enige lewensverlies.

) 15 bestuurders se voertuie was oorlaai.

Municipality proud of clean audit status The Overstrand municipality has received clean audit status for the 2012/13 financial year. “In the Western Cape, 11 of the 30 municipalities obtained a clean audit and the Overstrand is one of them,” said Overstrand Mayor Nicolette Botha-Guthrie, delighted at this outcome. The mayor made the announcement at the special council meeting held at the auditorium on Wednesday 22 January where the Draft Annual Report was tabled. There are five types of audits: Clean audit; Financially unqualified; Qualified audit; Adverse opinion with findings; and Disclaimer of opinion with findings. For six consecutive years – from the 2006/7 financial year until the 2011/12 financial year, the municipality has obtained unqualified audit reports. “This means that though the affairs of the municipality were in order, certain matters had still to be attended to,” said the mayor. A clean audit is given when the legal compliance and service delivery report-

ing is in order – proving that government resources have been effectively used for the purposes intended, in compliance with regulations. The mayor said that according to the auditor-general, as far as the 2012/13 financial year is concerned, there were: ) no findings of any material misstatements in the financial statements prepared by the municipality in accordance with Section 122 of the Local Government: Municipal Finance Management Act, no 56 of 2003; ) no material findings of any instances of material non-compliance with specific matters in laws and regulations applicable to the municipality; and ) no material findings on the annual performance report concerning the usefulness and the reliability of the information reported by the municipality. The mayor thanked everyone for their hard work and dedication towards achieving a clean administration. “All the communities in the Overstrand can rest assured that the Overstrand Municipality is in good and capable hands,” she said.

Grotto beach developments Continued from page 1. Dr Pat Miller said that when it gets hot, picnickers go into the forest for shade, or break off branches to make braai fires. Upgrade ideas should be aimed at keeping people out of the forest. “The milkwood forest is an irreplaceable asset,” added Miller. In response to a question from Fryer, Bruwer replied that a study for the re-establishment of the wetland had already been done, and that an application to make this part of Fernkloof Nature Reserve had been submitted. It was also suggested that visitors should pay an admission fee and that there should be safety and security measures. Rules of use should be put in place. ) PARKING: A suggestion to change the road to Grotto beach up to Dutchies into a two-way road again, was favoured by most. ) RESTAURANT: No double storey restaurant, and not on the old

Nautilus restaurant footprint. GAG raised concerns about the height, actual position and safety of the site with regard to setback lines. Fryer said: “The coastline is changing and the beach front is being eroded. The impact of the Klein River mouth breachings could end up putting the whole beach under threat.” The call was made to enlarge the current Dutchies footprint instead, but to prohibit night life or loud music. The rehabilitation of the old Nautilus site, and its conversion to a grassed area, should be included in an extended environmental assessment. A demand was also made to view the financial analysis and business plan to support the need and viability for an extended restaurant on the site Dutchies occupies. One matter that was raised more than once was why the municipality has been so silent on the whole issue. “How many sleepless nights do we

need and still have to endure?” asked Pickstone-Taylor. “The municipality needs to work with local committees,” added Wendy Hofmeyr. “The municipality knows we are all against the amphitheatre and double storey restaurant on the beach. Why are they silent on the whole issue?” asked Hoogenhout. “We need written confirmation that the proposed idea of an amphitheatre and double storey restaurant is off the table. That this idea is dead. If the municipality accepts that it is a no go, then we can have a proper discussion moving forward.” Minutes of the session will be sent to attendees within two weeks. Further enquiries can be directed to the Senior Town Planner, HJ van der Stoep (Tel: 028 313 8900 / hvdstoep@overstrand.gov.za), or Charel Bruwer from EnviroAfrica (028 316 2888 / 082 805 0190), or Grotto Beach Action Group: Niel Hoogenhout (dmhoogenhout@gmail.com).

Businesses in Main Road say it ‘feels like a graveyard’

JANHENDRIK COETZER Main Road in the CBD was closed for roadworks from last week, and businesses in the area are suffering due to noise, dust and plunging turnovers. The owner of Piri-Piri, Ricardo Braganca, says their turnover is down by 95%. “We usually close at 20:00, but decided to close the shop at 17:00 because from 15:00 onwards there are no customers. I cannot understand why the municipality can spend a large sum of money on the road but they cannot help us business owners. How am I supposed to pay rent if I don’t make sales?” said Braganca. According to Philip Opperman, owner of Just Residential, they are 80% quieter since the road works started. “On Monday for instance, there was not a single customer,” said Opperman. Liz Huysamen from De Beers confirms that this time of year they usually get many tourists, but now business is absolutely dead. The Belgian Bakery owner, Marjan Gerrits, says it’s terrible. “We are working with food here and with the

work with the amount of noise and dust. “We have to keep our doors closed all day to prevent the dust from entering the shop,” said Maroudas. According to Mike Bartman from Overberg Municipality they have received complaints from business owners and again apologise for any inconvenience. “It is our highest priority to make everything run smoothly and speedily, with contractors working Mondays to Saturdays. “We have faced a few unforeseen challenges, one being the water pipe that was damaged because it was laid too close to the surface,” said Bartman. “We are thoroughly aware that the roadworks are disruptive to business owners that is why everyone treats it as high priority. In general the cooperation from business and the public is good. Where we receive complaints, we try and find solutions. Such as the traffic divert via (Swallow) Park Lane instead of St Peters Lane, especially heavy vehicles and delivery trucks. Extra signs have been erected to this effect and we urge these drivers not to use St Peter’s Lane.” Pedestrians are reminded to use the marked pedestrian crossings for their own safety. The road works are expected to finish at the end of February.

Onthou, eet gesond, leef gesond, dink gesond! Voorkoming is beter as genesing gaan sien u huisdokter gereeld vir 'n “Goeie Gesondheid” ondersoek ! Vriendelike groete Dr. Willem Skein Dear patients It is with a bit of sorrow I have to announce that I will no longer be practising as a general practitioner in Hermanus as from the 1st of March 2014. After 14 years of general practice and giving it a thorough consideration, I realised that it was a good time for refreshment and decided to take a slightly different direction in my career. My family and I will still live in Hermanus whilst I will commute regularly to my new job in the north of Canada. I would like to use this opportunity to thank all my colleagues and patients sincerely for the support and confidence that I have enjoyed from everyone during the past 14 years. It was a real privilege to have had the opportunity to be involved in your lives and to be able to help. There were so many special moments that enriched my life which will always be dear to my heart; I will surely miss that. I want to wish everyone a healthy, blessed and joyous year and future ahead. Remember to eat healthy, live healthy and think healthy. Prevention is much better than cure! Go and see your family doctor once a year for a “Wellness Check”! Kind regards Dr Willem Skein

dien by die 13 000 seereddings uitgevoer. Esterhuysen beskou die Hermanus-omgewing as ’n buitelug-sport-en-rekreasie paradys.

) ’n Skerpduik-kompetisie vanaf Dreunkrans by Hermanus (kop eerste).

Haar biologiese pa is in 2011 oorlede. Haar ma, Elsabé Wolfaardt, werk by OK Foods in Gansbaai en sê “my hart swel van die trots”. Skoolhoof Tommy Wilson sê Bianca het be wys mens kan uitstyg bo jou omstandighede.

Bags full of love spread joy No less than 1 510 Bags of Love, filled with groceries for needy people, were distributed in Stanford, Gansbaai, Bredasdorp, Zwelihle, Mount Pleasant and Hawston during the Christmas period. This project is co-ordinated by the Hermanus Catholic Church and supported by churches, individuals and organisations such as the Overstrand Municipality under the patronage of Mayor Nicolette Botha-Guthrie.

“The idea is to fill a shopping bag (from a list of required items) to the amount of R120; alternatively you can give a cash donation and we will fill the bag on your behalf,” co-ordinator Des Collins said. According to him, the biggest supporters of the Bags of Love campaign were the people of Stanford. “Hopefully this year we will get Kleinmond on board as well – but we appeal to everyone to fill a bag of love,” he added.

Overstrand building industry employers reminded to comply The Building Industry Bargaining Council (BIBC) has issued a reminder to all building industry employers within the Overstrand Municipality not to use the current court case as an excuse not to comply. This reminder, according to the release issued by the BIBC, comes at a time when the building industry in the Overstrand area has been in disarray following a number of contractors in the area taking the Minister of Labour and the BIBC to court regarding the issue of jurisdiction and the extension of the Collective Agreement to non-parties. The release further states that the court date has been post-

poned until May 2014 due to the applicants failing to have prepared their replying affidavit. The court order states that the BIBC reserves the right to take non-compliant contractors to arbitration to enforce compliance; the Council will thus continue to enforce the Collective Agreement in the area. In addition, it is important to note that as the second respondent in the case, the court has ordered that the case against the BIBC will only be heard after the determination against the Minister of Labour, and only if necessary. Anita Mfiki, who is from Hermanus, has just completed her first year at Wits. She is studying towards a degree in chemistry with chemical engineering and Lonmin Mines has offered her a bursary for the re mainder of her studies.

Past pupils continue to shine KERRY VAN RENSBURG A distinction for physics in her first year as a chemistry with chemical engineering student at Wits University, has secured Anita Mfiki, Qhayiya Secondary School’s top achiever for 2012, a bursary from a mining company. Anita earned five distinctions in matric. These were for mathematics, life orientation, geography, life sciences and physical science. For her tertiary education, Anita did not let circumstances and a lack of finances stand in her way. She secured a student loan from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) for her first year (2013) at Wits. And because she did so well, she has, after sending in an application, been offered a bursary from Lonmin Mines. Anita says the bursary will cover her tuition fees, residence fees, meals, books, medical aid and pocket money for the next four years. Her two degrees in one course is a five year study programme. Anita, who is back in Hermanus with her family for the holidays, says she is excited about the bursary and when she completes her degree, she then has to work for the mining company. “The toughest part about being at university is time management. I often have classes and lab-work until 17:00 and then have to study, which can be tiring!” But it seems the hard work is paying off for Anita. ) Another learner from Qhayiya Secondary’s matric class of 2012 is Lungisa Kenneth Qendu, who is continuing to do well in his chosen field of study. With four distinctions for matric – life orientation, geography, life sciences and physical science, and a study bursary from Autozone Hermanus, Lungisa was able to complete his first year at CPUT (Cape Peninsula University of Technology) where he is studying towards a diploma in civil engineering. Lungisa earned distinctions for construction methods, surveying and drawing. For the practical component of his second year (it’s a three year course), Lungisa is working on the Hermanus Main Road CBD roadworks project. He will be “in town” until March for “on the job” training.

Sandra Pretorius, wat by Tipples

WEDDING BELLS: Wayne and Lauren Putter (neé Van den Broeck) tied the knot on 23 December at Nan nies Beach, followed by a reception at Gabriël skloof near Bot River. Both work at Absa iDi rect in Johannesburg, where they met. They chose Hermanus as their wedding venue because they wanted a very small and intimate wed ding on the beach. Lau ren’s parents are Janette and Callen, who own Diminish body fat freez ing in Hermanus.

Michael Walker and Moi van der Merwe with Moi’s grand daughter Blommie and her grandson Daniel. HAPPILY MARRIED: Michael and Moi were married by John de Gruchy at the Volmoed chapel at the end of last year. The couple say their age together is 132 years old. “We are looking forward to our life in this amazing community, walking on the beach and being with friends. Mike and I have both been going to Volmoed for many years but only met last April when we attended a media tion in the chapel.” Moi’s granddaughter Blommie was the flower girl and grandson Daniel was the keeper of the ring. After the serv ice they had a bring and share picnic next to the lilly pond.

International leaders in interior design

INTERNATIONALLY RECOGNISED as BEST RETIREMENT DEVELOPMENT A mere two years after opening its doors, leading Alzheimer’s and dementia care facility Livewell Suites has been named the Best Retirement Development in the world in the esteemed 2013 International Property Awards.

“This Award is one of the most highly rated indicators of quality,” says Livewell Suites CEO Jimmy Hanekom.“For a relatively young enterprise like ours to achieve this status is a dream come true.” The awards celebrate the highest levels of achievement around the globe and take into consideration the quality of design, construction and presentation of property developments, their interiors, architecture and marketing success. Livewell Suites is still SA’s only free standing care facility catering specifically for people suffering from dementia and Alzheimer’s and offers person-centred care, including day and respite care, for individuals and couples.

Livewell Suites also won the African division of the International Property Awards for Interior Design. Due to the specific nature of the facility, the interior design has to adhere to international standards of dementia and Alzheimer’s care environments, yet provide residents with luxurious homely surroundings. Jouke Beket from Juniper Interiors employed extensive research to tailor make the furnishings of this historic building. Concepts for the interior design were carefully integrated with the essential and specialized requirements of the care facility. Special attention was paid to the utilization of texture and colour-rich fabrics to enhance the homely and welcoming feel. By using varied furnishings, textiles and colours, residents are assisted in navigating the spaces without becoming disorientated. The overall feel of the facility is therefore one of peaceful elegance with a luxurious, old-world charm.

EDITORIAL COMMENT Support CBD shops Several letters and SMSes from readers and comments from business owners in the CBD indicate that the roadworks are a headache for all concerned. Not only is the noise, dust and limited accessibility inconvenient and disrup tive, but business owners are faced with an alarming decline in turnover. The municipality’s original decision to complete the upgrade between October and December was rejected by members of the business community and the alter native date of backtoschool day in Jan uary was approved as the lesser of two evils. The business community also chose the second of two options put forward by the municipality – that of completing the upgrade in five weeks as opposed to eight weeks, by closing both lanes. The other option would possibly have caused less disruption as it would have allowed for oneway traffic instead of total closure of Main Road with three pe destrian crossings. Now that construction is in full swing it is hitting hard, but ultimately the en hancement of the CBD benefits all resi dents. So leave your high heels at home, put on your sunglasses and let’s carry on supporting our local businesses.

During the roadworks, rather use Park Lane and not St Peter’s Lane Open letter to the editor, road engineers and other rocket/road scientists at the municipality: What a wake-up call this morning of 15 January in St Peter’s Lane. Trucks, cars, motorcycles racing down our normally peaceful lane, bounded by Greekstyle town houses and the church yard. Oh gosh, is it the Dakar Rally or “Main Road closure day”? Huge signs erected on Main Road advising motorists to use St Peter’s Lane to get to the Waterfront – no speed limits. Hello, whatpartof“lane”isnotunderstood by the powers that be. “Lane” being a narrow country village road. St Peter’s Lane is a narrow lane with parking on one side, thus leaving a very narrow thoroughfare with no pavements. Pedestrians with toddlers and prams use this as a walk through to the CBD from hotels and guest houses in Marine Drive. Funny that Park Lane, with a double lane go-

BAIE BEKOMMERD

funds will have to be found to restore St Peter’s Lane.

JACKKNIFED: A car carrier’s driver tried to turn from Main Road into St Peter’s Lane. According to the reader who sent in this photo, “it is crazy to allow this, this vehicle jackknifed.” PHOTO: EV WELSH ing past Swallow Park, has no signs saying “This way to Waterfront.” Yes this will be the cry from the road scientists – “it’s only for five weeks”. Five weeks to squash a few toddlers and after all this,

Mike Bartman, Deputy Director: Community Services: The alternative to direct all traffic through Park Lane was considered. However, this would have had a significant impact on the availability of parking spaces and access to businesses in Main Road between Park and St Peter’s Lanes. A sign “Alternative route to Waterfront for deliveries” on the corner of Main Road and Park Lane was indeed placed to re-direct delivery and heavy vehicles down Park Lane. We would appeal to all drivers, especially delivery trucks and heavy vehicles, to use Park Lane as the alternative route for access to the waterfront. Additional signs will be erected to this effect.

In praise of Sofca I feel I must add my view on the Sofca discussion. My husband’s last six weeks of life were spent at Sofca. I am a qualified nursing sister, so I know what is expected or correct. I was allowed to visit him any time of the day and could come and go without “special” hours. He was always clean-shaven; always neat and clean, in spite of being in nappies; always fresh and tidy. Never smelly. The staff were always helpful, happy and so caring. As was stated, many being there for years.

The food was delicious. I fed my husband and it was very well prepared and tasty. Although Sofca is in an old building, it was always so clean. The floor shone. When one walked inside, there was no unpleasant odour of any kind – as can be found in “Frail Cares” that I have been in or visited. I personally recommend Sofca to all. In May 2012 I wrote that in the Hermanus Times; thanking and praising them all.

‘Together we make a great team’ The Windsor Hotel would like to thank the people of the Cape Whale Coast. The Stormers have recently completed their third successive pre-season training camp in Hermanus. According to the team’s management it was even more successful than the previous two. The Windsor would like to acknowledge that although we have a role to play in that, it would not be possible without the co-operation of some of the organisations and businesses of Hermanus and obviously without the people of our beautiful piece of heaven. Special thank yous to SA Forest Adventures, Walkerbay Adventures, Hermanus Cricket Club, Aqua Farm, Creation Wines, the Braai team, Hermanus Golf Club, Hawston Community Club, Fruit and Veg, ProActive,

Barry Hilton and Hermanus Times. A very big and special thank you must go to Principal Cilliers and the Hermanus Primary School. None of this would be possible if we didn’t have a quality field such as Hermanus Primary School. A special thank you must also go to the people of Hawston who turned out en masse to watch the Stormers train at a training session recently held there. So, thank you to the people of the Overstrand, together we make a great team.

Waar beland

but there are none available in Onrus.

) Is anyone else having problems with postal deliveries? I have had important mail, requiring urgent response, arrive a month late. Magazine subscriptions arrive long after the magazines are already on the supermarket shelves, if they arrive at all. When I did postal deliveries, many years ago, we did not expect to go home until all deliveries for the day had been cleared (without overtime pay). The local delivery man, who works in upper Onrus, is a very pleasant young man, but not only does he appear to be the only one delivering in the whole Onrus area, but it seems he collects a bag full of mail in Hermanus and then cycles to deliver in Onrus. He cannot do that more than two or three times a day. It may be that mail is sorted in Hermanus and then delivered to him in Onrus, but I have been unable to check this as there has been no response from the 028 312 2316 number I was given as contact number. I would gladly change to a post box

Ludewick Rabe, deputy manager at the Hermanus Post Office responds: We are asking residents to please be patient. There are various reasons why certain post might take longer than other parcels. We receive only one delivery with packages and post at 06:30 every morning during the week.

Waar sal ek eendag my lewe slyt?

Counting the cost of back to school KERRY VAN RENSBURG Going back to school at the start of the new year is, for the most part, exciting for children and a relief for parents after a long holiday. But the financial strain of kitting out a child in a new school uniform at the start of either Gr 1 or Gr 8, and contending with school fees as well as all the additional schoolrelated costs at this time of the year, can be quite daunting. The Hermanus Times took a look at how much it costs to enrol a learner for Gr 1 and Gr 8 – the two grades where new school uniforms have to be factored into the budget. Hermanus Primary School: Fees for 2014: R7 040 ( R640 a month over 11 months). Grade 1 stationery pack: R360 School uniform: green dress: R160; PT top: R110; skort (girls): R110; boys black PT shorts: R100; tracksuit top: R190; tracksuit pants: R130; shoes: R120; tackies: R120; socks: R20 per pair; shirt white long sleeve and short

sleeve: R50 each; tie: R40; sun hat or cap: R60; jersey: R130. The total costs for the full school uniform for a Gr 1 girl, plus the stationery pack and the fees due for the first month, amounts to R2 240. The basic uniform is available from Hermanus Primary’s school uniform shop/clothing bank. To save costs, an as sortment of good quality secondhand uniform items can be bought at a fraction of the cost. Hermanus High School: Gr 8 Compulsory school fees for 2014: R10 200 per year, (which amount to R1 020 to be paid over 10 months.) In addition to the fees, a teachingmaterial fee of R750 (or book fee) is paid at the beginning of the year when the learners collect their text books from the school’s book store. This money is not refunded when the text books are returned at the end of the year. Stationery and class exercise books, about R400. School uniform, available from Land en See: (costs can

The total initial cost for the first month of high school, which includes the fees for the month, the book fee, the school uniform (for a girl), and the stationery and exercise books, is R4 300. Costs can be spread out if the winter uniform items are bought later in the year as needed, and if you are able to pay the full amount of annual school fees up front, par entscansaveR302(3%)ontheirchild’sschoolfeeaccount. In the Greater Hermanus area all the other government or state schools, are no fees schools, which means parents are not required to pay any school fees. Among these schools are: Lukhanyo Primary, Zwelihle Primary, Qhayi ya Secondary, Mount Pleasant Primary, Hawston Primary and Hawston Secondary, as well as Gansbaai Akademie. Some parents from these schools do pay a voluntary “do nation” of about R50, or so, a month. The cost of a school uniform for a Gr 1 girl learner at Hawston Primary School costs about R600. This includes a maroon skirt at R70; a maroon or grey jersey at R70; shoes at R120; socks at R20; and a tracksuit at R270. Most of the items are available from Pep or Ackermans andthetracksuits, madebypeoplefromtheHawstoncom munity, can be ordered/bought from the school. At Hawston Secondary School, the cost of a uniform for a Gr 8 girl is about R935. This includes a blue skirt at R130, the shirt, socks, shoes same price as stated before; sleeveless pullover R150, tracksuit jacket R245 and track suit pants R110. The uniform is available from the school’s clothing store. The school also supplies basic stationery, some exercise books and all the text books at no extra charge. Thislistofexpensesforall schoolsdoesnotinclude the cost of school bags or transport/bus fare costs. On the other end of the scale, private school education fees vary from one school to the other. At Curro Hermanus, for example, the fees, as per their website, for a Gr 1 child, for the year are R23 280, which makes it R1 940 a month over 12 months. For a Gr 8 learner, the fees are R29 040, which makes itR2 420permonthover12months.Adiscountisapplica ble if fees are paid in full for the year. Onceoff enrolment fees are also required.

Ways to save for educational needs ) Danelle van Heerde, Head: Advice pro cesses and tools at Sanlam Personal Finan ce Compound interest allows a very average saver to become a wealthy individual. The value of com pound interest is not in saving vast amounts – in stead, it’s all about when you start saving. As Van Heerde explains: “It’s effectively earning interest on interest on interest. So once you have put your savings aside, however insignificant they may seem, you do not have to do anything, bar watch your money increase. It’s the best way for your money to grow over the long term.” Van Heerde shows the strength of compound inter est by taking a saving of just R250 per month. “For many savers, R250 amounts to a single trip to your local store to stock up on groceries.” How does compound interest work? If you save R250 a month between the ages of 24 and 30, you will, according to Van Heerde’s cal culation, have accumulated more at age 65 than someone who saves the same amount monthly from age 35 to 65. In the first example, you have actively put away R250 for six years, or 72 months, amount ing to R18 000 without interest. In the second, you’ve actively saved R250 for 30 years, or 360 months, worth R90 000. And somehow you will still have more at age 65. It works like this: If you put R250 away monthly between 24 and 30, and then leave those savings in your account, you’ll be worth R479 453 by age 65. This is based on an interest rate of 9% (Van Heerde says this is calculated assuming 6% inflationary returns, plus 5% real returns, with 2% subtracted for fees). On the flip side, put away R250 between 35 and 65, you’ll only end up with R425 528. “The differ ence is in the extra amount of time that your savings have to earn interest or compound, starting at age 24 instead of 35,” she says. How can it benefit you if you’d like to save for your children’s education? This lesson is an important one for parents in par ticular. School and university fees are becoming in creasingly burdensome – but making use of com pound interest is a great way to reduce this load. Van Heerde shows how: By putting away just R250 a month for your child when he or she is between the age of 5 and 10,

and then leaving that money in the account, your child will have about R50 000 at age 20 – a great way to help pay the fees. Or you can leave this to earn more interest, and by 65 your child will be worth R2,1 million. Compare this to your child starting to save for him self as an adult aged 25 – an active investment of R250 between 25 and 65 will only amount to R1,05 million. “That’s double the saving, by simply putting away R250 every month for five years, when your child is young. It’s not surprising, looking at figures like this, that Albert Einstein referred to compound inte rest as the eighth wonder of the world.” What about inflation? According to Van Heerde, there is one element to remain cautious of: inflation, otherwise known as the general rise in price of goods and services. Infla tion is currently running at 6.1% yearonyear. That means the interest you earn must be more than infla tion, for it to not eat into the value of the money you’re saving. (For example, if your savings generate 5% interest, but inflation is at 6.1%, it means that you will be able to purchase less with your saving in future than you can today.) Van Heerde suggests speaking to an experienced registered financial advisor to establish the best way for you to make the most of compound interest. “Eve ryone’s situation is different, and an expert could help you find the best savings products for you. But even so, there’s no reason or excuse not to use the power of compound interest to benefit your savings strategy. It’s especially vital when you’re young, but even if you’re past 50 years of age, you can expect to live another 35 – 41 years, so don’t take that for granted. To think that setting aside just 35 cents an hour for your child when he’s five could make him a multimillionaire when he retires – that is pretty em powering,” says Van Heerde. Here are more calculations, based on the assumption of an investment return of 9% a year after fees and taxes. Saving R250 per month until: • Child is 5: Projected investment value of R18 683 (total of R15 000 invested) • Child is 12: Projected investment value of R62 876 (total of R36 000 invested) • Child is 18: Projected investment value of R128 936 (total of R54 000 invested) In addition: If R250 per month is saved until age

5, and then left invested until age 18, the projected investment value is R57 279, from just R15 000 in vested. “An important ingredient of saving is time – it is better to start small than to delay until you can afford to save a bigger amount. Once started, stay commit ted and increase the monthly amount whenever you can afford to do so,” says Van Heerde. ) Jaanre Muller, portfolio analyst at PSG, Hermanus To help pay for university fees, another option is the government initiative, Fundisa(www.asi sa.org.za/fundisa), which is managed by Corona tion, Investec, Old Mutual and Stanlib According to Muller, Fundisa is a conservative, lowrisk investment. The fund mainly invests in fixed interest instruments (such as money market instru ments and bonds). An attractive feature of Fundisa is the bonus it offers, which is calculated as 25% of the annual contribution to the fund, capped at R600 per child. Therefore, if a parent saves R200 per month, he makes an annual contribution of R2 400. The bonus is then calculated as 25% of R2 400, or R600. “Fundisa is only available to learners whose household earns an annual income of less than R180 000.” The minimum monthly contribution to the fund is R40, which is probably more attainable for many households than that of unit trusts, where the minimum monthly contribution usually starts at about R250,” says Muller. “However, before any specific product or fund is chosen, a financial adviser should first analyse the parent’s and family’s specific circumstances, invest ment needs, objectives and risk appetite.” Another important consideration is the investment horizon. If the investment is conservative, the risk of capital loss should be relatively low. However, the biggest risk of such an investment is that it does not keep up with high inflation, which can in effect result in a negative real (afterinflation) growth rate. In gener al, if the investment horizon is longer than five years, one should consider including some exposure to growth assets (for example, shares). The risk (volatil ity) of growth assets is naturally higher, but history has proven that investors have been adequately com pensated over the long term. The critical aspect is to obtain the right mix between conservative invest ments and growth assets for each household’s speci fic circumstances and needs.

Twintig veertien is verkiesingsjaar.

Hoe hierdie kwessies sal uitspeel, is baie onseker.

Chris van Wyk is ’n senior portefeuljebestuurder by PSG, Hermanus

MY OPINION: Technology, consumer & media trends By Chris Moerdyk – corporate marketing analyst, advisor and media commentator. The primary trend in 2014, in my opinion, will be taking deep breaths to try and make practical sense of the tsunami of technology and radical consumer changes that have taken place in the past few years. And top priority will be: 1. Understanding the consumer There will be a concerted movement towards understanding the B2C and B2B consumer a lot better. Not only in terms of a focus on the aspirational aspects of consumer behaviour that in past years have not been given the weight they deserve, but also – and very importantly – the way in which the consumer is accessing information. 2. Mass media Hopefully, there will be a lot more introspection by the mass media on the manner in which they are communicating commercial messages to target markets. My guess is that the current trend will continue with marketers doggedly sticking to the traditional commercial break and good old 30 second commercial in spite of a growing amount of evidence to show that the ROI on this methodology is waning quite dramatically. 3. In the USA, research shows that 83% of TV viewers do not watch commercial breaks. The figure is 72% in Europe. But, in both countries, advertisers continue to go this route. In South Africa, among top LSMs, the figure is probably above 50% but the number of viewers who do watch commercial breaks increases dramatically as one goes down the LSM scale. Newspapers will learn from their mistakes in the past, both in terms of the dangers of simply giving their content away free of charge online, and also with regard to relevance. The process of changing newspaper mind-sets away from paper-first to the establishment of information resources will continue to be as slow as internet bandwidth in the “platteland”. 4. Advertising bans Government will continue to try and curry

favour with voters, The World Health Organisation and myriad nagging Mother Grundies, by looking at the politically safe pursuit of banning advertising. 2014 will eventually see an outcome of the alcohol advertising ban saga (after the elections). On one side, the Health Department is hell bent towards the absolute draconian while on the other, those ministers in the business and finance-related clusters in cabinet have been putting up some strong arguments against overall bans as a potential for job losses. But, whichever way the liquor advertising ban pans out, you can be sure that junk foods and sugar just might well be next in the firing line. In fact, the Health Minister has already stated his intention to try and ban fast food advertising. For the first time, however, the media and advertising industries have been preparing solid submissions for when the time comes to debate the proposed Bill. The liquor industry has also spent enormous time and energy developing practical alternatives to banning advertising. 5. Measurement An increasing number of boards of directors will continue last year’s somewhat lackadaisical trend of insisting on being given meaningful return on investment and marketing funds employed data with far fewer corporates accepting the now debunked claim that “a lot of things in marketing cannot be measured”. CEOs will be wanting to find out just how efficient they are in spending those massive budgets. 6. Social media The trend toward accessing a myriad consumer and professional/technical information via mobile will continue apace as the world’s big phone manufacturers tweak their products to be able to do all manner of new things – from health checks and diagnoses to electrocuting muggers. So far, business has been exceptionally slow in even bothering to try and meet the consumer need via mobile. In general, social media will continue to increase in terms of preferred private and commercial conversations. The big challenge to

the retail sector will be to understand that social media conversations are conversations and not just one-way sales pitches. 7. Online advertising will continue to frustrate itself While it is the only media type to have actually grown during the recession, online advertising will continue to frustrate itself in terms of value-relevance. The problem is that right from the start, online publishers discounted their advertising space massively to get attention. Now they’re finding it hard to make it profitable. For example, a website attracting 1 million views a day charges far less for ad space than a newspaper with a circulation of only 40 000 a day. But, the continued growth in online advertising will also depend on a paradigm shift in the way advertising is constructed. Successful online marketing will demand a completely different approach to that of conventional media. 8. In-store marketing will grow Marketing will be all about getting closer to the consumer: Brand managers will look towards marketing strategies that involve closer contact with the consumer. In-store marketing that gained impetus three years ago will continue to grow apace as marketers choose face-to-face strategies over faceless shotgun approaches. 9. Online shopping will grow bigger The trend towards more South Africans buying stuff online from all over the world will increase as connectivity improves and becomes more affordable. Once consumers start realising that online shopping is now a lot more secure, they’ll start picking up on the fact that a lot of products are cheaper online than they are in local shops – even including import duties and door-to-door deliveries. The majority of business websites in South Africa will remain pathetic particularly in the B2B sector. The suggestion that once a consumer has found a product on the website to “send us an email and a sales rep will contact you” is just not acceptable. www.bizcommunity.com

Police Day sports National Police Day will be celebrated in the Hermanus cluster on the Zwelihle sports grounds on 27 January from 09:00. A drill platoon will be marching from York Cash and Carry to the grounds. The cluster stations will take part in sporting events such as boeresport. Everyone is welcome to attend. The cluster commander Col Vincent Cetyana and Col Nomana Adonis will give addresses, as will the community police forum chairperson, Hennie Westraat.

ALL WHEEL DRIVE: THE LEGEND RETURNS

Allnew Subaru WRX STI makes international debut QUICKPIC

F

uji Heavy Industries Ltd. (FHI), the maker of Subaru automobiles, yesterday introduced the all-new 2015 WRX STI, Subaru’s iconic performance flagship model, at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit. Powered by the legendary 225 kW 2.5F turbocharged Boxer® engine, the 2015 WRX STI debuts a new four-door wide-body design, built on a stiffer chassis for even greater handling agility and precision. The WRX STI provides a rally-bred drivetrain and allwheel drive handling that is unique to this model. Handling is enhanced with a stiffer chassis, firmer springs and faster steering (13.0:1 ratio). New for the 2015 WRX STI, Active Torque Vectoring joins an arsenal of the model’s proven handling technologies, which include Multi-Mode Driver Controlled Centre Differential (DCCD) with Symmetrical AllWheel Drive™, Multi-Mode Vehicle Dynamics Control, and a Brembo® performance brake system with Super Sport ABS. The 2015 WRX STI carries its bold personality inside as well, where new Alcantara seating surfaces, accented by red and black leather bolsters and red stitching, set the tone for the upgraded and roomier cabin. A driver-focused interior remains integral to the WRX STI performance character, with the new model debuting a motorsport-inspired flat-bottomed steering wheel and new whiplash-reducing performance-designed front seats with height and tilt-adjustable head restraints. The 2015 WRX STI body structure makes greater use of high-tensile steel than the previous model and features special stiffening elements at key locations. The stiffer chassis helps yield a super-quick steering response that was benchmarked against top-handling sports cars. The 13.0:1 steering ratio provides a quick 2,5 turns lock-to-lock compared to 14.5:1 and 2,8 for the standard WRX model. As on previous WRX STI models, the 2015 version uses an exclusive inverted-strut front suspension system that provides higher levels of cornering agility. Aluminium front lower L-arms reduce unsprung vehicle weight. The STI-tuned suspension teams up with standard 18-inch wheels and 245/40R18 performance tyres. The 2015 WRX STI is powered by a 2.5-litre turbocharged and intercooled 4-cylinder Boxer® engine that employs a Dual Active Valve Control System (Dual AVCS). The engine, which is exclusive to the STI model, produces 225 kW at 6 000 rpm and 393 Nm of peak torque at 4 000 rpm. The WRX STI engine is teamed exclusively with a specially reinforced 6-speed manual transmission. Incline Start Assist can momentarily prevent the car from rolling backward when being driven away from a stop on an incline. The Subaru Intelligent Drive (SI-DRIVE) powertrain management system allows the driver to tailor the car’s driving characteristics by choosing from three selectable modes – “Intelligent,” “Sport” and “Sport Sharp” – using a rotary dial on the centre console. SI-DRIVE alters vehicle performance char-

Subaru’s renowned safety package uses the brand’s proven Ring-Shaped Reinforcement™ frame body structure, which has been shown to excel in the new small overlap test by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). In the cabin, a driver’s knee airbag is added to the roster of safety features that includes front side pelvis/torso airbags and side curtain airbags that offer front and rear outboard seat coverage. The all-new WRX STI will participate in the Nürburgring 24-Hour Race (19-22 June 2014) for the seventh consecutive year, the new vehicle benefiting from development honed at the famous German race track. The STI will be aiming for its third victory in the SP3T class this year, following the previous win in 2012. Through participation in this race, which demands speed and stability along with endurance and reliability, Subaru stands to gain further engineering advantages, which will filter through into its road vehicles. As in 2013, Hideharu Tatsumi will take responsibility for team operations as Team Manager, along with responsibility for vehicle development. Two European drivers will be joined by Japanese drivers Toshihiro Yoshida and Kouta Sasaki. Subaru Southern Africa marketing manager, Ashley Lazarus, comments: “The allnew Subaru WRX STI subscribes to the hallmarks of Subaru performance and excitement, the new vehicle exhibiting classic and trademark Subaru design and performance elements to once again create a hero in our range of performance-oriented vehicles. The all-new STI will be retailed in South Africa in limited numbers, the launch date of which will be confirmed later in 2014, together with local model specifications and pricing.”

MercedesBenz C300 Edition C: the old tricks HANJO STIER Can you teach an old dog new tricks? Perhaps I should be careful here as the dog in this instance is the popular MercedesBenz C-Class and the trick would be their Edition C model. So before I answer my own question, let’s examine this latest offer from the world’s favourite luxury automobile brand. The C-Class is far from a dog to look at or drive. Have a good stare around you in traffic and the impressive quantity of C-Classes will confirm how many people chose it. Even better, there are tons of models from the previous and the previous-previous generation still gracefully wafting about. The favoured Mercedes sedan is classy, pretty and hardy. This current one is also nearing the end of its lifespan, which is where the Edition C trick comes in. Trick is actually a nasty word, so let’s call it a “persuasion” to get more people into the firm, but comfortable seats. Sales of the internally-known W204 range are starting to drop off for a few good reasons. Main rivals Audi and BMW both have newer products and the next generation CClass should be here in a year or so. It’s only natural that buyers look elsewhere and/or wait for the new one to arrive. Or is it? Yes, I’ll admit that the C-Class isn’t on the same page as its refurbished rivals, but after driving it for a week that didn’t

Derived from the C350’s latestgeneration 225 kW motor, this engine may also be a swansong of naturally breathing, meaty V6’s before Merc sticks a turbocharger on each cylinder bank. PHOTO: QUICKPIC bother me the slightest bit. Part of that was probably the work of the Edition C package, which comprises AMG and Avantgarde styling as well as the 7G-Tronic automatic gearbox. Another fact to consider is that this model is at the peak of its life. It’s had a facelift and all niggles are ironed out by now, so you’ll be buy-

ing a highly accomplished car. My folks have inadvertently done that a few times and never regretted it, also because you get a better deal and more freebies (e.g. Edition C). Mercedes-Benz South Africa extends the Edition C offer to other models, such as the popular C180; and the most bespoke model is our C300 test unit with a 3.5 F 24-valve

petrol V6, sporting 185 kW or 340 Nm. Derived from the C350’s latestgeneration 225 kW motor, this engine may also be a swansong of naturally breathing, meaty V6’s before Merc sticks a turbocharger on each cylinder bank. And just like its donor engine, this one has a lovely deep growl as it digs into low-rev

torque, but will also yell to almost 7 000 rpm. Claimed fuel consumption is 8,7F/100km, which seems spot-on. Around town with start/stop system it’ll drink about ten, but cruising just below the national speed limit, our C300 Edition C approached seven. We heard a bit of wind noise from the square-ish mirrors and those good-looking five-spoke low-profile wheels rumble a bit. They also make the ride slightly harsh over rutted surfaces, but provide heaps of grip. Many attempts at breaking the Merc’s composure failed, it has slightly vague steering, a bit of body roll and a lacklustre gearbox, but still leaves enough excitement for an enthusiastic journey up or around a mountain. Obviously you also get a full range of safety and comfort features, the C300 Edition C distinguishing itself by a media interface, rear seat through-load, Artico leather and alcantara trim with blue stitching. The fantastic Intelligent Light system and a full 6year/120 000 km maintenance plan are also included in the price of R499 443. If you’re in the market for a Merc and tempted by this car, I have a suggestion. Buy an Edition C now and put your name on the waiting list for the next C-Class. Once that arrives you can trade this one in and I’m sure you’ll get a good price for it. After all, it’s a C-Class with lots of special bits on it. Good dog, great trick.

21

wenstreep is.

Abandoned dogs seek good, permanent home JANINE VAN DER RIET Two dogs have fallen victim to neglect in Gansbaai after their owners apparently just packed up and left them unattended. The dogs are a female Boerboel turning one and a female “pavement special” of eight months old. Neither have been spayed. They were abandoned by the previous tenants of the house. The person living there now was assured by the dog owners that they would be collecting them about seven months ago. The new tenant is now moving into an apartment in February and cannot take the dogs with him. Both dogs are very child and cat friendly and as they are still puppies, they just want to play. Both are very loving dogs and enjoy a lot of attention. Please call Helene on 073 355 8000.

Hawston beat Bredasdorp by narrow margin Bredasdorp cricket club travelled to Hawston on Saturday to compete in a 50 over match. Hawston lost the toss and was sent in to bat first. A good third-wicket stand between Chad Kleinsmidt (28) and Leeroy Henn (42) ensured Hawston a total of 137 runs. Bredasdorp went in to bat and also lost early wickets but managed a couple of good middle-order partnerships. They were cruising along until captain Philip Olifant and Heino Bailey took two quick wickets. Olifant with 3/33 runs in 8 overs, was assisted by Heino Bailey with 2/22 in 10 overs, and Easton Benjamin with 1/14 in 10 overs. Hawston turned on the screws in the final overs with Chad Kleinsmidt almost securing a hat trick. Bredasdorp’s final hope was ended by a brilliant throw from the boundary by Johan Dowries and Hawston won the match by 7 runs. ) Hawston cricket club will travel to Kromco this weekend and will be at home next week against Elgin.
