Nasionale Erfenisdag, of deesdae beter bekend as Braaidag, is in groot gees regoor die Overstrand gevier. Two senior councillors resign JANINE VAN DER RIET Two senior mayoral committee councillors resigned during the past week. Deputy mayor Pieter Scholtz, mayoral committee member for infrastructure and planning and ward councillor of Ward 2, resigned on Monday 22 September and his last day as deputy mayor will be on 30 September. Ben Solomon, mayoral committee member for finance and economic development and ward councillor of Ward 7, resigned on Thursday 18 September, with immediate effect. Mayor Nicolette Botha-Guthrie made this announcement on Tuesday (23 September) at a council meeting. She stated that both councillors resigned out of their own free will, wanting to start retirement. Solomon told the Hermanus Times the reason for his resignation is his non-availability for re-election in 2016.
Cllr Ben Solomon, mayoral committee member, resigned.
Cllr Pieter Scholtz, deputy mayor, resigned.
“I think it’s better for another councillor to take over my portfolio now already,” said Solomon. Botha-Guthrie took the opportunity during the meeting to restructure the mayoral com-

Botha-Guthrie also thanked Scholtz for everything he has done for the municipality and for standing by her. She worked with Scholtz for 14 years. Botha-Guthrie said Scholtz had been contemplating his resignation for the past few months, and mentioned that he and his wife would like to travel through South Africa and enjoy life to the fullest as a retired couple. New deputy mayor Smith said he is very excited about the prospects his new post holds. “This is a wonderful opportunity for me to live out my passion. The mayoral committee is just getting better and better. I want to focus on development and creating more business opportunities and jobs for the community.” With Botha-Guthrie’s new mayoral committee structure in place, she will be saving the ratepayers of the Overstrand the costs of two salaries, due to the reshuffling of the committee members’ portfolios.

Woman robbed across the road from police station A suspect, who robbed and attacked a woman (35) in her house situated across from the Stanford police station, even swam across the river to try and get away from police officials chasing him, but, after an intense search, he was later found and arrested. The incident took place on Sunday 21 September around 01:45. The victim was sleeping when she became aware of a man in her room. When he realised she was awake, he jumped on her and started to hit her with his fists, but the woman fought back while screaming for help. According to Sgt RJ Gouws from the Stanford police, at that stage the suspect heard a vehicle stop outside the premises and he fled with the woman’s keys. Meanwhile, Sgt Ndzambo was doing duties in the community service centre at Stanford SAPS. She heard a woman scream in the vicinity of the police station and im-
mediately contacted the patrol vehicle to investigate. The members, constable Arizan and R.Const Damon, responded to the call. They stopped the vehicle in front of the house and saw the suspect running away. “They gave chase, but the suspect managed to evade arrest by running through several premises,”said Gouws. “Const. Arizan noticed that the suspect had a sharp instrument in his hand and fired a warning shot. The suspect then fled into the bushes, jumped into the river and swam across.” The members went to the area across the river and continued their search. At around 04:20, while Constable Damon was still busy searching the bushes, Constable Arizan, accompanied by Constable Sukwana, patrolled the R43. Close to Stanhope they noticed the suspect and when they stopped he tried to run away again, but was apprehended this time.
He was still soaking wet from his earlier swim and was found in possession of the keys that were taken. The suspect was taken to the community service centre where unknowingly, the victim herself was busy giving a statement. As he was brought in she immediately recognised him as the family’s long time gardener, Manie Robertson (38) from Stanford. She also identified the keys found in his possession as her property. The suspect has been charged with house robbery and has since given a full confession of the crime. He appeared in court on Tuesday 23 September. “The members who ensured the arrest of the suspect in this case are thanked for their hard work and dedication. They did not give up the search until the suspect was arrested. “This shows that the members of Stanford SAPS are fully dedicated to eradicating crime in the Stanford area,” Gouws said.
Man robbed in Palmiet JANINE VAN DER RIET A man was robbed of his motorbike, clothes and jewellery on Saturday morning in Palmiet, Kleinmond. The Kleinmond police station received a complaint of a house robbery in progress. According to the Kleinmond station commander, WO Jaco van Wyk, several police vehicles were dispatched to the crime scene. On arrival the man had driven with his car to his daughter’s house, who had phoned the police, and then he drove to the police station. According to the man, he was
asleep in his house when the suspect gained access into his house by forcing open the burglar bars in the kitchen. Van Wyk says the man was woken up by the suspect, a coloured male, with a number 28 tattoo on his hand, holding a knife. The man recognised the knife in the suspect’s hand as one of his own knives in his house. The suspect searched the house and took a jacket, two rings and fled with the man’s Vuka motorbike. No arrests have been made and the stolen property has not yet been recovered.

Barry Hilton, the big ‘softy’ JAN-HENDRIK COETZER After a month long tour in Hong Kong, Singapore, Macau, Australia and New Zealand, comedy legend Barry Hilton is returning to Hermanus to perform at the Windsor Hotel on 3, 4 and 5 October, with his brand new show, The Way I See It. And with the third show on Sunday 5 October, Barry decided that all proceeds will go towards Camphill School. ”As Raymond Ackerman, well known South African businessman, once said: “If you want support from your community, you first have to support your Barry Hilton community,” says Barry. The show, The Way I See It, is about life in general and will also give you a peek into Barry’s quirky mind. “My content is ‘clean’ and relevant to all, and I never speak or joke about politics and politicians. I think that is exactly why my shows are doing well abroad, because everyone can relate. “You also don’t need to be super intelligent to understand my sense of humour, because I’m actually telling you stuff you already know. I just remind you of it.” Besides having a track record of 30 years in comedy, Barry is also a corporate entertainer, motivational speaker and actor. He was also the first South African to perform at London’s Comedy Store in 2001, and 10 years later the first to perform at Sydney Comedy Store in Australia. Being in this industry and with the recent suicide of actor Robin Williams, the topic of comedians suffering from depression surfaced during our interview. “As a comedian you always cheer people up, they clap and laugh and have lots of fun. Afterwards you find yourself in a hotel room all alone. Most comedians, like myself, always live with that fear that someday people might not find you funny anymore. “Also, very rarely do people congratulate you on a good performance. One day someone
had something negative to say about one of my shows in an email, and I was besides myself. But luckily my wife Sandy helps me to see the lighter side of life.” Barry and Sandy moved to Hermanus about a year ago and he says they have settled in well. “Sandy quickly made friends with other families – about four just in the street where we live in the Hemel-enAarde Village.” ) There are a 100 tickets available for Barry’s show on Sunday 5 October, in aid of Camphill School. The tickets cost R130 per person. The show will start at 17:00 at
the Windsor Hotel. To book for this show, contact Michelle van Zyl at Camphill School on 028 312 4949 or 082 565 3627, or book online at http://ngobraai.co.za/collections/tickets. QUICKIES WITH HILTON Any bad habits? I eat too much and interrupt people a lot. What do you do in your spare time? I build cupboards. What is always in your fridge? Lots and lots of tupperware. Favourite actor? Denzel Washington. Biggest fear? Losing my children, and that people will not find me funny anymore. What inspires you? My wife, Sandy. What makes you nervous? Before a show I get extremely nervous. What do you dislike? Twofaced people and illegal downloading. What are your weaknesses? I’m insecure and trust people too easily. Any superstitions before a show? I hate it whenever someone says, “go break a leg”. What people don’t know about you? That I’m actually a big softy.

‘21 Days for the Ocean’ starts tomorrow Through hosting educational talks at various schools, White Shark Projects realised how little the school learners of the Overstrand community know about the ocean lapping at their doorsteps. And so, motivated by a sense of responsibility, White Shark Projects launched an educational initiative called “21 Days for the Ocean” running from 26 September to 16 October. Through this campaign, White Shark Projects aspires to raise ocean awareness in the community, which relies indispensably upon marine tourism. They will show people which simple steps they can take to prevent further damage. Almost everybody knows about shark-finning, but not many people know about ocean acidification, which ultimately threatens all ocean-dwelling species and our planet as a whole. “21 Days for the Ocean” coincides perfectly with the Whale Festival and the school holidays, offering young and old numerous opportunities to get involved and do their bit for the ocean. They jump-start this drive with a sustainable seafood fund-raising dinner, which will be held at La Pentola. All proceeds of this event will be donated to The South African Shark Conservancy (SASC). Tickets for this special dinner are available from White Shark Projects and can be contacted on 028 312 3347. The other ocean-themed events of “21 Days for the Ocean” include, educational talks at schools, a movie night, a shark camp, a photo exhibition, informative beach walks, coastal clean-ups and even a “selfie for the sea” competition.
Monitoring and verification of geyser management system Eskom and Overstrand Municipality joined forces to install a residential load management (or geyser control) system in Hermanus, Franskraal and Kleinmond. The units were installed to enable the Overstrand Municipality to move a substantial portion of the residential evening peak geyser load to the off-peak period (after 20:00), when there is less strain on the national electricity grid. As part of the regular and necessary testing requirements before the project starts, the University of Cape Town’s Energy Research Centre will now undertake measurement and verification tests. According to Stephen Muller, Director: Infrastructure and Planning at Overstrand Municipality, the geyser control units in the above areas will be switched off between 18:00 and 20:00 during weekdays as part of the measurement and verification process. It will be switched on starting from 20:00, in a staggered way, to prevent a new peak. These tests started on 22 September. No more switching will be done between 07:00 –10:00. The Municipality requests the public to support this initiative. If you do switch off your geyser manually in the morning and back on after returning from work in the afternoon, switch it on as soon as possible after arriving home to allow the geyser to heat the water for use between 18:00 and
20:00. If you do switch it on again in the evening, allow some time after 20:00 to heat the replacement hot water. The Municipality also requests the public not to tamper with the units or the seals installed. This can lead to a remedial action fee according to the Municipality tariff code E 14. Enquiries can be directed to the Municipality on 028 313 8111.

Farm workers honoured Two employees from Hamilton Russell Vineyards and two from the Hemel-enAarde Valley Pre-School excelled at the 2014 Farm Worker’s Competition held recently at Kleinplasie Country House in Bredasdorp.
Aarde Valley Pre-school participated in the category for social development. The category was not awarded due to only three entries this year but set the platform for next year to encourage broader social development in agriculture.
The annual competition allows for workers from the Overberg area to be evaluated and put forward for their achievements in their different categories. Chantel Siegelaar achieved second place in the category middle management, of which there were eight participants and Celina Gxagxa, achieved first place in the category technical operator, against 13 other participants. Celina will proceed to compete provincially in the same category in November. Elzinda Louw and Emmerentia Coert of the Hemel-en-

The owner of Diminish, Janette van den Broeck, and therapist Roné Wright at their new premises on the corner of Mitchell and College Streets.
PROMOTION: Diminish moves to new premises Diminish celebrated their first birthday in Herma nus this month. They recently moved premises from High Street to the corner of College and Mitchell Street, at the Health & Beauty@Herma nus centre. Diminish offers a noninvasive method of tar geted weightloss through Cryolipolysis, a non invasive procedure that permanently and effec tively destroys and removes fat from targeted ar eas of the body. Cryolipolysis is extremely effective for areas that have not responded to diet and/or exercise, and can be likened to nonsurgical liposuction. Cryolipolysis is effective at removing fat from the abdomen, love handles (flanks), back and arms. The procedure cools (freezes) the targeted areas and then breaks down the fat. No harm is done to the surrounding tissue. Fat cells are more vulnerable to cold than the surrounding tis sue. This stimulates a natural fat removal process that continues for several months after the treat ment with outstanding results. Treatments are performed for 45 minutes per targeted area, and results should be noticeable after two weeks or less. Only one session re quired per area. For bookings, call Janette van den Broeck at 082 432 1933.

New harbour R16,5 million upgrade officially opened ELBÉ VAN HEERDEN Upgrades totalling over R16,5 million at the new harbour in Hermanus were officially opened by Jeremy Cronin, the deputy minister of Public Works, on Friday. In his speech Cronin referred to the issues that have been prevalent throughout the country concerning the upkeep of the harbours. “There has always been a debate surrounding who should be in charge of maintaining the harbours. “When the cost of upgrading and maintaining is mentioned, most smaller municipalities prefer not to take responsibility. But the harbours are in fact part of the Department’s integrated development plan – a partnership
Councillor Mzameni Mshenxiswa
Councillor passes away ELBÉ VAN HEERDEN A council meeting was stood down on Tuesday after a memorial address by the mayor in remembrance of Councillor Mzameni Mshenxiswa who passed away on 19 September. Mayor Nicolette Botha-Guthrie said in an emotional address that it was with intense sadness and total shock that they had learnt of Councillor Mzameni’s death after such a short illness. “Councillor Mshes, as he was affectionately known, served Zwelihle Ward 5 as Ward Councillor since May 2011. The Overstrand has lost a capable leader, a person of integrity and a close friend. Our hearts go out to his wife Siziwe, children, family and friends.” She quoted Nelson Mandela in saying: “When a man has done what he considers to be his duty to his people and his country, he can rest in peace.” She added: “Councillor Mshe will indeed rest in peace.” The mayor, together with Councillor Michelle Sapepa, then lit a candle in his honour, which continued to burn until the end of the council meeting, when it was snuffed. This heart-rending moment left many councillors in tears and speaker Alderman Anton Coetsee halted the meeting for ten minutes. Councillor Mshenxiswa was diagnosed with liver cancer and died after a short sickbed. He was born in 1975 in Elliotsdale in the Eastern Cape. Mshenxiswa, an ANC member, joined the Overstrand Municipality in 2011 and served as a Ward 5 councillor and was a portfolio member of Finance and Economic Development. He was involved in the Zwelihle community since 2006 and served them through projects such as the Treatment Act Campaign (TAC), the Siyazama Service centre for elderly and the Zwelihle Health Forum Campaign. He was offered an opportunity by the municipality to study at a higher institution, and enrolled with the University of the Western Cape for an Advanced Diploma in Administration and graduated in 2013. He will be remembered as one of the more vocal councillors in council meetings and will be missed by many. He is survived by his wife Siziwe Mshenxiswa, four children, Sihle, Bonga, Gugu and Liyema and one grandchild Lutho. A memorial service was held in the Zwelihle Community Hall on Wednesday. He will be laid to rest in the Eastern Cape on 5 October.
that has been formed between Department of Public Works (DPW), the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) and local municipalities. “We have lost the opportunity here by not inviting the Overstrand municipality to the ceremony that could have strengthened this partnership,” he added. Cronin then handed the certificate of completion to Fanie Fourie, the assistant director of DAFF, who was also present, before ceremoniously cutting the ribbon. The project was handled by Bambana, who employed local, unskilled workers to complete the building. Bambana, which means “hand in hand”, strives towards developing local skills and
employing local people. Janine Ryan, the HR director for the company, said at the ceremony that they had spent R460 000 on skills development during this project. “We had 21 learners over the period of the project – 12 women and 9 men – who were skilled in masonry and painting. All the workers were from the local community.” The upgrades included the upgrading of underground pipelines, the refurbishment of three residences on the property as well as the winch house and pump house, the resurfacing of the harbour road and upgrades of the fish shed and boat house. The harbour master offices, which were not sufficiently water resistant, were also refurbished.

Comments about wild horses disappoint Thomas and Marion, I was so very disappointed to read your comments about our precious wild horses. I thought that I had come to know you quite well through my late husband Peter rescuing you from the many snakes that had taken up residence in your garden. Had you been talking about them I would have understood a bit more. Perhaps you were having a bad day, as we all do from time to time. These horses add to the sense of peace and serenity of our Haven, in fact, lately they have saved it, as our little community appears to be going through a really rocky time. Having their welfare to focus on keeps our minds busy with helping to keep them safe. Hopefully, our concern for them will help to spread the love in our village and not destroy what is left. These animals are such peaceful and beautiful creatures. Perhaps we should study them more closely and learn from them how to live happily and in harmony with each other and with all God’s creatures.

The wild horses are a pleasure With reference to the “Wild horses in Fisherhaven are a nuisance” letter in the Hermanus Times of 18 September. The horses are an absolute pleasure and we have been blessed with two foals in the last two years. I can fully understand why the health department hasn’t responded to the Niemeyers’ complaints as they have far more pressing issues to deal with. The manure does not bring flies. In fact many of us collect the droppings for our compost bins. Maybe the Niemeyers should invest in a fence around their property, and then the wild animals won’t eat their vegetables. It is a wonder they haven’t complained about the moles.

Police and security companies do a sterling job Rather than complain about our police force and security companies, this letter is to highlight the exemplary and professional experience we recently had with the Hermanus Police and ADT, following a robbery at our house in Onrus in March 2014. During and after the incident, the police and ADT could not have been more supportive, effective or committed to keeping the community safe. In the early morning hours, two robbers broke into our bedroom where we were sleeping, and after a non-violent altercation, they made off with all our valuables. After triggering the panic button, ADT arrived in less than four minutes and thanks to the “find-my-iPhone” feature on one of our phones that was stolen, ADT was able to track the suspects through the fynbos all the way into Sandbaai. The police also arrived within a few minutes, and through close cooperation, the police and ADT apprehended the suspects and the entire matter was over within a half hour of the break-in. In addition to resolving the incident, both the police and ADT followed up to make sure we were okay and efficiently
carried out their duties to create the case against the men who were apprehended. Three people in particular deserve special mention. Warrant Officer Fouché of the Hermanus Police is the sort of officer who we so desperately need in our police force. He is hard-working, courteous and incredibly efficient and responsive, and expressed genuine concern for our well-being throughout the experience. Eugene du Plessis and Innocent Sidandala from ADT went far and beyond the call of duty and while their duty was only toward us and our premises, they displayed resourcefulness and pro-activeness in the way they immediately sprang to action to ensure successful apprehension of the suspects. They also came to visit later in the day to see if we needed further support. We are grateful to have such excellent members of the police and security, and it makes us feel much more comfortable knowing that these men, and other men and women like them, are looking out for the safety of the Hermanus community.

Horses are part of Fisherhaven In response to the letter published in last week’s Hermanus Times, it is clear that the “complainant” does not belong in such a wonderful area. The Fisherhaven horses are yes, not native to the area, however, they are descendents from the last Anglo Boer war, and have flourished in the area for years, not disturbing anyone and no one disturbing them. They have settled well, and yes, they may fight, but all wild animals fight for dominance, it is not uncommon. These horses are part of Fisherha-
ven and are much loved! They have never been onto the National Road, nor have any caused accidents that I am aware of! They are well adapted to their circumstances and are not stray animals as the writer calls them, nor were they abandoned by their owners. The “Wild horses” are more entitled to roam Fisherhaven than the “complainant” or anyone else is, that have indeed been in the area for longer. If you don’t like them, don’t buy in Fisherhaven!
FISHERHAVEN RESIDENT
‘Die perde helder my dag op’ Na aanleiding van die brief van die egpaar Niemeyer in die HT van 18 September wil ek graag my opinie lug. As daar al ooit ’n bynes oopgekrap is, sal dit daardie brief wees.
HELENA
We refer to letter: Wild Horses of Fisherhaven are a nuisance, written by Thomas and Marion Niemeyer, published in the Hermanus Times, 18 September. We, the undersigned residents of Fisherhaven, are highly disturbed by this letter. The wild horses of Fisherhaven are an absolute delight and we are privileged to live in a rural town which the horses have also made home. The residents have taken it upon themselves to protect these horses by setting up a “WhatsApp” group and a Facebook page to alert residents when the horses are approaching the R43 or if there are any threats to their well-being. This is working, and several times we have moved them further down into the village. We are not ignorant to the possibility of an accident and therefore we take it upon ourselves to protect them and motorists. Perhaps the Niemeyers also need educating on the benefits of horse manure in their garden? Some composts are made from horse manure, and it is fantastic for garden plants. It will very rarely bring flies, unless the horses have not been feeding on their regular diet. The idea of the horses bringing “flies and pests” to our area is ridiculous, and we perhaps, should rather concentrate on the irresponsible two legged residents and visitors, who leave our municipal common areas and wild brush areas filled with filth. The horses bring smiles to residents and visitors alike, and we would like to invite the Niemeyers to enjoy the rural wonders that our area provides. If this is not possible, then perhaps they should find an area where they do not have wild horses roaming free, francolins crossing roads and tortoises sun-tanning. We would like to take this opportunity to graciously request visitors to our area, wishing to see the horses and the new born foal, to please not feed or touch them.

How do we (as a nation) treat our animals? “The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way it treats its animals”. I think these were Ghandi’s words. It is true. It does not help for you to say that you can’t bear it, you can’t face it, you get too involved. You are human, they are animals. They are here because of you. They can’t decide to stop breeding. They can’t fend for themselves anymore. They depend on humans, you, us, to survive. Well-off owners mistreat their pets by leaving them alone, without stimulation and exercise, without loving contact. Many owners in the poorer communities take care of their pets - you won’t believe how well these animals are looked after! Sterilised, fed,
dipped. But always where there is money involved there is abuse. One day it’s pit bulls (for fighting), the next day it’s grey hounds (for racing). And every single one of them is in a poor condition. HAWS looks after them. Many dogs returned to their owners come bouncing back to HAWS! You get exercise, the dog gets attention and exercise. The world’s best antidepressant has 4 paws and 1 wagging tail! But if you really can’t do it, just contribute, without having to face them! Your contribution will go towards food (in dire need of!), sterilisations, the running of HAWS. Please re-consider and contribute.

Where to now if you cannot trust the bank? Reading Mr. Breitenbach’s story, (Stay alert people, HT, 11 Sept, letters page) I would like to add our bit. I recently sold a property and after everything was paid we wanted to put the balance in a savings account for a rainy day as we are both past our sell-by date and sitting in the departure lounge. We have a savings account with a bank in town but get a pathetic interest. We decided to ask the bank to open an additional savings account with a reasonable interest rate that will be paid into the existing savings account that my wife uses for her debit card. She discussed it with a senior consultant who told her that he is putting the money in a savings account, but if we wanted to withdraw from it we will have to give 4 days notice,
to which we had no problem. After a week or two I received a notification in the post informing me that the money was put into Stanlib Unit Trusts. I confronted the consultant but he insisted that he told my wife that he is putting the money in unit trusts which is a lie as I told him the savings account will be short term as I am waiting to buy a small property and Stanlib is not short term. When African Bank crashed, R16 300 is frozen in our account. How can a bank, if they make a bad investment, penalise their customers? Like one of your readers said, I also think we can kiss it goodbye. Who can a person trust? It seems like it is better to be poor.

Off to wheelchair basketball nationals We would like to take this moment to say a big thank you to the anonymous donor, who, after reading the story in the Hermanus Times of Franco Smith – wheelchair basketball player selected for Boland and needing assistance with raising the R500 required of each player to participate, stepped forward and contributed the full R500. Further we wish to extend a heartfelt thank you to all who supported the Greater Whales Wheelchair Basketball team’s Boerewors Roll
Stand at the Grobbelaar Hall on Casual Day, 5 September – you have helped the team raise the R500 needed for Ickner Smith – also selected by Boland – to attend the National Championships in Potchefstroom. The Boland team leaves on Sunday night from Worcester and we wish them a safe journey and an awesome time participating. Thank you!

Focus on Plant Explorers This year the Botanical Society’s Spring Flower Festival has a decidedly historical slant. So does the expo mounted by Whale Coast Conservation. Both events are open from 09.00 to 17.00 from today (Thursday 25 September) until Sunday 28 September. Entrance to Fernkloof Nature Reserve is R20 – pensioners R10 on Thursday. The Botanical Society is showcasing five “explorers” who came to the Cape in the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries to collect indigenous species and to create scientific history by classifying and naming them for the first time. William Burchell (1781-1863), a dedicated naturalist, travelled independently for four years in a small, custom-built wagon through southern Africa, collecting over 60 000 specimens. Francis Masson (1741-1805) was sent by Sir Joseph Banks to collect plants from the Cape for Kew Gardens. T P Stokoe (1869-1959) a lithographer from Yorkshire and avid mountaineer, came to the Cape
in 1911 and collected for 40 years until he was almost 90. He found 130 new species, 30 of which are named after him. Stokoe spent time at Stanford and specialised in the area of Kleinmond and what is now the Kogelberg Reserve. Others who played a role were young Swedish physician Carl Peter Thunberg (1743-1828) who spent three years collecting plants at the Cape while learning Dutch, en route to a botanist’s position in Japan, and Anders Sparrman (1748-1820) who was sent from Sweden to the Cape to collect for Carl Linnaeus. Whale Coast Conservation is also celebrating four historical figures in the generation and use of energy. None is known to have come to South Africa, but the results of their work certainly have! They are James Watt, George Stephenson, Michael Faraday and Thomas Edison. More information about each of these historical luminaries will be available at each display. And, of course, there are the beautiful flowers! - ROBIN LEE

The Flower Festival is on, with the usual wonderful show of our amazing local wild flowers. And in addition, a big marquee with many exciting stalls. The Hermanus Botanical Society’s stall will have books on environmental themes; honeybush tea with its strong medicinal qualities, the beautiful tree essences of Platbos, maps and many other items with a floral theme. Cape Nature focuses on environmental education projects, particularly featuring tortoises as the creatures that have a special place in the fynbos of Fernkloof. Bird calls summon you to a visual presentation on Overberg birds by the Hermanus Bird Club, which you can enjoy while nibbling on hand-made floral chocolates from Whalehaven. Or you can stock up on Venita’s essential floral oils products, Carol’s quirky jewel-

Residents, who contacted the Hermanus Times, said the foal is walking with difficulty and sleeps most of the day. And that dogs walking around without a leash are also bothering the foal. Leon Steyn, environmental specialist at the Overstrand Municipality, said on Tuesday that they have been monitoring the foal for the past week and are happy with its progress. Traffic and law enforcement, with the help of
all the security companies in the area, the neighbourhood watch, the Hermanus Animal Welfare Society and the ratepayers, are keeping an eye on all the feral horses in Fisherhaven, but especially on the new- born. Steyn says the foal hurt its hoof, but it is on the mend. “The Overstrand Environmental section will take the initiative, together with other role players, to find a long-term solution for the safety and well-being of the horses. Law enforcement and traffic officials play a pivotal role, as safety and security are their mandate and they are geared for it with regular patrols in Fisherhaven at all hours,” says Steyn.
The new born foal has an injured hoof, but it is on the mend.
Roof sheets at Hermanus Animal Welfare up at last Since being built, the large dog kennels at Hermanus Animal Welfare Society (HAWS) have never had a solid roof over the cages. During rainy weather, the bigger dogs would get wet if they stand in the front section of their cages, covered only with green shade cloth. Staff at HAWS were determined this year to finally do something about it and so a plea went out to the public via the Hermanus Times and Facebook. Judy Miller, volunteer at HAWS, says they
are overwhelmed at the generosity of the town’s people who came to their aid donating roof sheets and the wood required to mount the sheets. “We had to use the polycarb transparent lightweight sheets due to the existing structure, and were forced to wait until the manufacturers could make them. Eventually, months later, our roof is up and our doggies are high and dry at long last.” HAWS would like to extend a heartfelt
thank you to everyone who helped make this possible, and especially want to extend thanks to the following: B & K Thorpe from Forest Timber for all the wood required, as well as the extra roof sheets. Ilze Perold Radiologist, Gateway shopping Centre, Dr P. De Flamingh, B Newton Johnson, Rob Smith, A. & L. Embledon, V. De Havilland, M Musson, M Kruger, H & R Pedersen. Does your dog itch ? Here are tips Itching is possibly the most common irritation that can happen to your dog. There are four main causes: 1. Parasites – Fleas and mange mites. Fleas are now easy to control with new Bravecto tablets and Seresto collars. Flea control is important as fleas will exacerbate any of the other causes of itch. Mange mites can be controlled with dips and internal drugs. The treatment has to continue for at least six weeks or more. 2. Deficiencies in the diet 3. Allergies – This can be separated into two groups: * Food allergy – allergic to one or more constituents in the diet; * Atopy – Allergic to something in the environment of the dog, like grass, Pollen, house dust, mite etc. Once your dog starts to scratch its skin open, bacteria and fungi invade the moist areas and create secondary infections. These organisms secrete metabolites that the immune system also becomes allergic too. This is why in the itchy dog it is so important to clear these infections. Treatment Your vet can do the following:
PLEASE ADOPT ME: Milo is a six monthsold big boy. A gentler dog you will not find. Milo is made of all things sweet and soft and he does not even know what it means to be a bad boy. Milo is fine with cats and is great with other dogs, big, small, male or female. Perfect family dog if you like big dogs. Milo is neu tered and vaccinat ed, house trained and sleeps inside. Adoption fee is R450. Phone 073 354 4915 or email loveisres cue@gmail.com.
HONORARY DAXIE: Billy is going around the world in eight days. If by the end of it he does not have a home, the animal shelter will have to admit de feat. Billy is a small boy of around 7yearsold. He has been in a shelter for four years! He has had more than 3 000 shares on Fa cebook. He has his quirks, can jump a standard vibracrete wall and hates cats. But all he really wants is to finally be special to someone. Contact Helene on 073 354 4915 or loveisrescue@ gmail.com.
) Eliminate the secondary causes of worsening the itch with internal medicines and external baths. ) Control fleas. ) Treat the dog with drugs that calm the immune system like cortisone antihistamines and the new one on the block, Atopica. These drugs all have varying side-effects and the newer ones cost a fair amount of money. Atopica is extremely effective, but what to do if you cannot afford it: Careful use of cortisone – this works well – too well – but it has serious side effects! So one must do all in one’s power to use it at the lowest possible dose. Change your dog’s food. Dogs react differently to food and it makes sense to change it to a less allergenic diet or even a different brand and possibly consider a more natural home cooked or raw diet. Feed Omega fatty acids and sulphur additive. Bath your dog with shampoo that treat the secondary infections and sooth the dog’s coat. Insure your pet! Start with a medical aid from as little as a puppy for this makes veterinary fees more affordable! – Dr Sandy Waddingham
GINGER KITTIES GALORE: Hermanus Ani mal Welfare Society has many of these gor geous ginger and white kitties who are all super friendly. Please call Gabi, HAWS’s cat volunteer, who can tell you all about them on 028 312 1281. Pictured here are Scarlet, Milo, Pixie, Foxy and Mango. LOOKING FOR A HOME: This lit tle male doggie was found in Northcliff area about two weeks ago, but he was never claimed by his owners and is now up for adop tion. The Herma nus Animal Wel fare Society named him Zak. Anyone interested in adopting this fella can phone HAWS on 028 312 1281.

OFF-ROAD: CHEROKEE GOES EVERYWHERE WITH EASE
Jeep introduces its tough new Cherokee FRANS LE ROUX Being a lover of all things SUV, I jumped at the opportunity to sample the latest Jeep Cherokee. After all, this is Jeep’s 5th generation Cherokee available in South Africa. If you are slightly confused by Jeep’s large model line-up, let me simplify it a bit. If the car has the word “Cherokee” on the back, then all you should know is that it is slightly more compact than the Grand Cherokee. What that word also means is that the car will be very capable off the beaten track. I picked up my not-so-inconspicuous metallic orange Jeep at Sandown Motors Century City and spent and entire dirt-filled weekend with it. Let’s discuss the looks first. Well, the front is certainly unique. Those angular lights and sharp-edged signature Jeep grille, are all featured to make sure this new Cherokee stands out from the crowd. My test vehicle was the top-of-therange Trailhawk 4x4 edition which had nearly all the bells and whistles. At the rear, however, things are more subdued. Jeep have opted for a familiar light-cluster and bootlid design which designers borrowed from the Grand Cherokee. Twin exhausts certainly do not hide the Jeep’s athletic prowess. With this Trailhawk version you do get beautiful 17-inch black rims which certainly look the part. Although they aren’t overly large, designers focused more on functionality than unnecessary street-cred. Using a higher profile tyre, the Jeep can easily cover trickier terrain. As I have stated before, Jeep’s products are on the up. They have worked hard to ensure that a certain

For the first time in years, this Cherokee’s interior is a nice place to be. Some of the materials and general lay-out is also borrowed from its more esteemed Grand Cherokee sibling. The most eye-catching feature is a large 21cm touch screen neatly situated in the centre of the console. From here you can control your music, cellphone, satellite navigation and even climate control. I am happy to report that this system works very well. I have to commend Jeep on their audio quality. Usually an aspect that most companies overlook, Jeep used a 9-speaker Alpine system that push-
es out more than 500 watts of pure entertainment pleasure. The well bolstered front seats offer good support all round, and even a strenuous long-distance trip won’t ruin your back. A large cargo-area (591F) is also welcomed if the vehicle will be used on the school-run or as a glorified grocery carrier. The top-spec Trailhawk which I tested, used a 3.2 V6 petrol engine producing a decent 200kW and 315Nm. Nothing unusual there, but what was remarkable is the gearbox paired with this meaty V6. Just as one gets use to the odd 7 or 8 speed shifters, suddenly the market turns to all things 9-speed. This Cherokee
then has almost twice the amount of gears as the automatic Cherokee it replaces. It begs the question, when is enough really enough? Cruising at the highway limit the Cherokee’s engine is barely ticking over. The rev needle is coasting at about 1 600 rpm. That drastically aids the 2-ton SUV’s fuel economy. When you drive mostly on highways, the Jeep can return close to 13km/F. However in town, not even the 9 cogs can save you from dreaded fuel stops. My overall usage after three days was just over 10km/F. When you do decide to stomp on the accelerator, the Cherokee is no slouch. A respectable 0-100 time of
8,5 seconds should scare off most boy racers. The aspect I enjoyed the most was certainly the way this Trailhawk devoured a tricky 4x4 obstacle route. Close to where I live is a private 4x4 road that takes you up and over the picturesque Perdeberg mountains. After selecting the 4-wheeldrive low-range and locking the rear differential, no gradient was too steep or rocks too slippery. Here the Cherokee came into its own and lived up to its best-in-class 4x4 capability. With all these aids helping you not to damage your car, crossing seriously difficult terrain becomes child’s play. Not once in my twohour trip did I feel unsafe or that the Cherokee will not make it over the next crest. On my way down the mountain the ever effective hill-decent control came to my rescue. The only thing that might run out is your patience. Thoroughly impressed, I made my way home. Direct rivals to the Jeep include the Landrover Freelander, Mitsubishi Pajero or even Nissan’s Pathfinder. You might even consider the evergreen Fortuner, but if you take into consideration value for money and standard specification the Cherokee trumps the Toyota as well. Buyers can currently choose between a 2.4 litre petrol and the powerful 3.2 V6. A diesel variant will be introduced to our market in the near future. The 4-wheel drive Trailhawk retails for R607 900 and Jeep offers a comprehensive six year/ 100 000 km maintenance plan. This Cherokee is truly a breath of fresh air in an otherwise dull midsized SUV lineup. It offers striking looks, loads of standard kit to play with and is nearly unstoppable offroad. If you want to stand out from the crowd, give this Cherokee a test run.

The 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol motor has identical power outputs to the previous Ballade (88 kW/145 Nm) but reduced friction and weight result in better efficiency; 0-100km/h takes 9,6 seconds (our best was a very impressive 8,3), top speed is 185 km/h and claimed average fuel consumption is 5,9F/100 km from the 40F tank. While our weekly consumption average was 7F/100 km, it reconfirmed my belief that 1 500 cc engines are sweet, eager and free-revving in nature. Although the four 73 mm cylinders have a relatively long stroke (89,4 cm), this engine has no problem pulling the Ballade’s 1 060 kg along at a decent pace. Give it horns and the VTEC-equipped engine screams to almost 7 000 rpm while annoying the traction control in first and second of its five forward gears. This peppy performance may decrease with additional weight but any Honda fan will delight in this motor’s exuberance at high crankshaft revolutions. Just as enjoyable are the car’s light pedals, steering feel and comfortable seats. The instrument cluster houses a big speedo with eco lighting, a rev counter, digital fuel level and consumption displays as well as a trip computer. The missing temperature gauge is represented by a blue and red warning light. The Honda Ballade has undergone sufficient changes to confuse distracted journos while offering better value and impressive toys. It is available in six colours, two trim levels, manual or CVT automatic gearbox with a 3-year/100 000km warranty, one year roadside assistance and 4-year/60 000km service plan. This 1.5 Elegance Manual model currently retails for R220 990. – Galimoto Media

DOGS scores The DOGS played an Individual Stableford (log) on 23 September in Kleinmond. Despite the tiny obstacle created by the sanded, hollow-tined greens, there were some big scores on Tuesday with an ample proportion of a sizeable field beating 30 points. But none were bigger than the monumental one posted by Huge to record an immense victory of gigantic proportions, albeit a small step for mankind. Some swallows are back now that Spring has arrived and no surprises were sprung at the bottom end of the leader board. Rotarians donate new washing machines Excactly two years ago, the Rotary Club of Hermanus hosted a Dutch group of 18 Rotarians from the Rotary club of Geertruidenberg, a village close to Biesbosch, a famous nature reserve in the Netherlands. During their visit, they expressed the wish to visit some of the projects the local Rotary club was involved with. After the visit at the Siyazama service centre, situated in Zwelihle, the Dutch Rotarians were keen to assist them financially. Nellie Tebele, the centre’s manager, indicated their urgent need for new washing machines, as their old machines were semi-dysfunctional. The Rotarians from the Netherlands organised a special fund-raising exercise specifically for Siyazama. The proceeds were sent to the Rotary Club of Hermanus, who then purchased three heavy duty front loading washing machines, which were delivered and installed this week. The washing machines are used to wash and dry the community’s washing, which in turn

This week there was some mixed weather, but we dodged among the clouds and managed a full week of golf competition. On Tuesday, 33 women enjoyed a super individual stableford format. Winning the silver division on 38 points was Heinke Douglas, and coming out on the top of the pile of the bronze division was Jackie Macdonald with a terrific 41 points. Great golf. Wednesday was men’s day and the day was generously sponsored by Overberg Asset Management and was an individual medal. Andrew Philip surprised all with an astonishingly well-controlled round of golf that took the day with a gross 74. He also took the A division prize with a nett 67 and justifiably was chopped 2 strokes immediately. Well played. The B division this week belonged to Brian Taylor with another great nett 67 and the C division victor was our fisherman Greg Do-

We had just one 2 club which was interestingly achieved on the par 4, 23rd hole by Jan Cloete. He insisted it was all skill, but we were convinced there was a large dollop of luck present! Friday was the Hermanus Primary School golf day which historically has been plagued by bad weather. This year however it cleared up in the nick of time and permitted a lovely day. Well done to all the moms who gave up their time to assure that it was a super success. Special mention must go to Caroline Goatley who put the day together. A chilly, but sunny Saturday, saw 111 players for the day. It was a betterball bogey plus and coming out on top was our president Wendell Meiring and his partner David Dicey on a terrific +14. Missing the honours by a single point was Christoff Botha and Pieter Boshoff. There were six 2 clubs and the ball pool paid to +10. Finishing off this week is some sad news. Pam Davidson passed away last week after a short illness. Pam was a very active lady member who was always positive and interested in your life, not just hers. She will be missed at the club. I, for one, will miss her smiling bubbliness she always brought into the shop. Until next week, keep calm and go golfing!

– JEROME MARTHINUS
