MY OWN DAUGHTER DID THIS: Wellknown community worker,
counsellor and auxiliary social worker at the Hermanus Rainbow Trust, Winnie Nywebeni, stands amongst the charred remains of what was once a lovely bedroom in her home in Zwelihle. Her daughter, who has allegedly been addicted to tik for nearly a year, went in to a rage and set fire to the house on Monday 23 June. Winnie says she reported the in cident to the Hermanus Police, who are investigating a charge of arson. Her daughter (31) appeared in court on Wednesday. See story on page 2.
My kaartjies is ook daarmee heen!” Alliance to fund baboon monitoring JANINE VAN DER RIET The baboon monitor programme in Voëlklip, doomed by budget cuts, will, however, carry on as usual due to a partnership formed between the Overstrand Municipality (OM), Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) and Working for the Coast. The baboon monitor programme was started as an initiative by the OM to prevent people from harming baboons that enter and damage residents’ properties. But as a part of much needed cutbacks, the council decided to do away with the programme leading to a saving of R1,4 million on the 2014/15 budget. After several meetings between role players, it was decided to continue with the programme. Working for the Coast will pay the baboon monitor’s salaries, although the new salary packages will be smaller than before, Leon Steyn, environmental specialist at the OM said on Monday. “The EPWP will sponsor the baboon monitors’ uniforms and the OM will sponsor office space, all equipment and transport for the monitors.” Steyn further said they are hoping that the cut in salaries can be topped up by residents to keep the current experienced baboon monitors from looking for other
jobs. “In Pringle Bay, residents, organised by the Ratepayers Association, have been working together with Working for the Coast for the past year. “The Association tops up the difference in salaries and by doing that, they have the most experienced and loyal monitors and it is a great success.” ) After a baboon was shot and killed, and another poisoned in Voëlklip last week, an older female baboon was knocked over by a vehicle on Friday late afternoon on the main road in Voëlklip. The baboon ran in front of a Toyota Corolla while she crossed the road.. Steyn says baboon monitors were on the scene within minutes and found the seriously injured baboon stuck in a part of the engine of the car. “The baboon monitors had to physically lift the car in order to remove the baboon. The baboon then continued to run until the monitors, members of the OM and CapeNature found her in a critical state a few metres from where the accident had taken place.” A veterinarian was called to the scene where he decided to immediately put the baboon down due to the serious injuries she had suffered. The driver of the Corolla was not injured and the car was not damaged except for the number plate that had fallen off.
Understanding baboons and their habits do’s and dont’s JANINE VAN DER RIET After a pregnant baboon was shot and killed, and another poisoned last week in Voëlklip, Hermanus Times (19/06/2014) Baboons killed, the environmental specialist at the Overstrand Municipality (OM) Leon Steyn, gave an insight into understanding baboons so that residents can be informed on what to do when they have encounters with baboons. According to information documents from the OM and CapeNature, baboon numbers in certain troops are declining at an alarming rate. They suffer many injuries and deaths - if the death rate continues at the present pace, the viability of the population will be threat-
ened. Baboons are a protected species in the Western Cape, thus it is illegal to feed baboons, to poison, trap, hurt or kill a baboon. All of these offences are punishable by law and carry stiff penalties. Baboons on your property: Baboons are attracted by food and enter the villages with the sole purpose of finding food. A baboon troop can cause extensive damage to your home, it is therefore essential to effectively manage your property, to make it less attractive to baboons. Keep rubbish secure in a baboon-proof dustbin and practice good waste management. Compost should be contained in composting bins.
The easiest way to get baboons off your property is by turning the hosepipe on them. They hate getting wet! Also, do not leave dog food outside and if you plant fruit trees and vegetable gardens, you will be attracting baboons. Baboons in your home: If baboons gain access to your home it is important to remain calm and to not block their exit route. If you panic, the baboons could panic and in doing so, may run frantically around the house causing even more damage. First and foremost, you must make it obvious that you are confident and serious about getting them out. Back off slowly and identify the baboon’s
shortest escape route. To coax a stubborn baboon out your house, try using a water spray bottle (never use anything stronger than water, as they might react negatively). Feeding a baboon could mean its death sentence: Baboons have learnt that humans are a good source of food and can show aggressive behaviour in their efforts to gain access to food. They jump into cars and onto people in their search for food. Once baboons show aggression, the authorities are forced to shoot them. ) Contact the Overstrand Municipality control room on 028 313 8000 or 028 313 8111 if you encounter problems with baboons.

3 Celia and Rayno bid Burgundy farewell after 4 years HermanusTimes
Nuus News
The landmark restaurant Burgundy and its owners are synonymous with all that is good and delicious about Hermanus. But Celia and Rayno Rabie have decided the time has come for them to move on. Burgundy has seen its fair share of changes since it was built in 1876, and now, after four years at its helm, the Rabies will hand over the reins to new owners. Talking to Frieda Lloyd, the Rabies said they regard ownership of the Burgundy as the ultimate experience for a local restauranteur – “the cherry on the Hermanus eat-out scene” – and feel that they have restored the reputation of this golden oldie to the stature it deserves. ”Four years ago we saw the potential offered and worked hard to awaken all the happy memories shared by different generations of Hermanus visitors. “Clients remember the Cyprus Tea Room with fondness and the Burgundy is currently an estab-

Celia and Rayno Rabie are looking forward to relaxing and recharging their batteries now that they have sold Burgundy. “We feel we have restored Burgundy to its righteous place as an esteemed Hermanus restaurant and it is time to take a break. lishment where friendships are rekindled and memories made,” remarked Rayno. ”This is a restaurant that is not only about serving good food it is also about community, development and involvement. Well entrenched in the community with more than 60 staff members, an involvement and an interest in the business community has made Burgundy and its people a tourism interface for the region,” says Rayno. Adds Celia: “Burgundy employees have remained through ownership changes with the longest employment record being 26 years and the average employee working for 10 years.” Celia says that she will miss her staff as much as she will miss the clients: “Our clients and staff were our world”. ) New owners, Willem en Esthie Steyn, said they feel privileged to take over the jewel of Hermanus and thankful to Rayno and Celia for building up this restaurant to this successful business that it is.

Leopard sculpture showcased Bool Smuts and Carolyn Martin with the sculpture of a leop ard made of 220 gin traps.
PHOTO: CILENE BEKKER
In keeping with its predator friendly status, Creation Wines recently unveiled a life-sized version of a Cape Leopard on their front lawn. What gives this sculpture the wow factor is that it was created from 220 gin traps that were gathered from farms in the Baviaanskloof region in the Eastern Cape during one of the Landmark Foundation’s effort to gather as many as they could. The effort was aided by an award of R50 paid for each gin trap. “We eventually collected a bakkieload of traps – symbolising a pile of collective suffering,” said Bool Smuts of the Landmark Foundation. A gin trap (also referred to as “soft catch traps”, “slaughter irons” or “steel jawed leg traps”) is made up of two metal jaws, one or two springs that slam the jaws closed, and a trigger plate in the middle.

When an animal steps on the trigger, the jaw closes around the foot, preventing the animal from escaping. The unveiling at Creation coincided with an information session. According to Carolyn Martin, co-owner and marketing director, the sculpture will remain with them for some months – “serving as a symbol of our ongoing commitment to conserving nature’s rich gifts to our land. “We also trust that this will raise awareness of the plight of leopards and encourage more farms to join the foundation in their quest to make more areas available for the Cape Leopard to roam freely.” The sculpture was created by Robert Leggat and is on loan to Creation from the Landmark Foundation. Eventually the sculpture will find a home in Kirstenbosch.

Paraplegic on mobility Youths and motorist foil robbery scooter attacked ELBÉ VAN HEERDEN
JANINE VAN DER RIET “To try and take away his last bit of independence, while we are battling so much already, is sickening!” So said Paulette Peyrot after her husband was attacked on his mobility scooter in front of Abagold near the New Harbour on his way home from the physiotherapist. Steven (43) suffers from multiple sclerosis (MS) and cancer and drives his mobility scooter to Hermanus’ industrial area daily, as the family cannot afford an automatic car for him. Three men ran towards Steven on Friday at around 17:30 while he was driving towards the Beach Club, where the couple live. “The men tried to pull him off the scooter while looking for things to steal in the basket attached to the front of the scooter. “A towel, that he used during his physiotherapy session was the only item in the basket,” said Paulette. Luckily two other men saw the incident and ran towards Steven to
help him. Security guards from Abagold also ran to Steven’s aid. Paulette, who works at the Beach Club, was informed of the incident by her husband on his arrival. “His ribs are bruised as well as other parts of his body and he is experiencing a lot of pain,” she says. “Now, every time he leaves the house to go to the physiotherapist or elsewhere, we are both stressed and worried.” The family is hoping to find a cheap, automatic car soon, so that they don’t have to worry about his safety and so Steve can regain his confidence and independence. Paulette says she hopes that people walking in the area will be on the lookout for dangerous characters. “There are a lot of kids walking to and from the Beach Club and they should really be careful.” The family was allegedly too shocked to report the incident to the police. “Our family would like to express our sincere gratitude to the two unknown men who, even after the ordeal, walked Steven all the way to the entrance of the Beach Club,” she adds.
STILL MISSING: There is still no sign of the 68yearold man from Parow who went miss ing in rough sea conditions last week. The man had reportedly been standing on the rocks in front of The Beach Club com plex near the New Harbour with a friend. Both were swept off the rocks, but his friend managed to get to shore safely. The Hermanus NSRI volunteer sea rescue duty crew, the Hermanus police and the Western Cape Government Health EMS and EMR ambulance services responded, but after an extensive search, there is still no sign of the missing man. Business owners fed up with flooding KERRY VAN RENSBURG Business owners in the centre of town are pretty fed up and frustrated with the perpetual flooding of Main Road. “Seven times in five years is getting a bit much and the frequency is increasing,” says Johan Pretorius, optometrist at Pappin and Pretorius. “We were promised a R2 million allocation to upgrade the storm-water drainage problem, but nothing happened when the new road was built. “New storm-water draining was put in front of Debonairs, but the main line in front of Seeff is the same 20 cm pipe from years ago. So, what happens is that the water accumulates and reaches Main Road quicker from other streets,” Pretorius says. He is not alone when it comes to battling with flooded roads and pavements. Louis Saayman from Fleurs Bloemiste and Jaco van der Merwe from Seeff Properties have voiced the same concerns Margie Frost, receptionist at Seeff, says during the last heavy downpour the water was three times higher than the height of the pavement because the small storm-water drain on the corner of the road near their office could not cope. Frost says the situation has become worse since the road was resurfaced and after the last major downpour, between 4 and 6 June, the pavement collapsed and people are tripping over it. Several businesses were closed for a week in November after suffering major flood damage. According to Pretorius, insurance companies are refusing to pay once again and the affected businesses have to seek com-
pensation from the municipality. “Being flooded twice in five days is ridiculous,” he says. The municipality and traffic department had responded within an hour and waterworks, three hours later, to try and clear the drains. Pretorius says the road was closed on the Wednesday when the flooding was at its worst, but by Saturday around midday, drivers were racing to see who could create the biggest wave, which flooded premises even more. Pretorius, Van der Merwe and Saayman agree that the road should be closed immediately if it is flooded and they expect the drains to be cleaned weekly to minimise damage to the affected properties.
At the re-opening ceremony of the newly resurfaced Main Road on 14 February, the mayor warned that it was not the end of the roadworks because the outdated storm-water system would require more work in the future, to the tune of R1,9 million. It was reported then that there is currently no budget for this project. Roderick Williams, director of Community Services confirmed that there is no funding available in the 2014/15 financial year for this project and will have to be reconsidered in the next financial year. He says the maintenance team will continuously monitor the situation and in the case of extensive flooding, give priority to alleviate the problem.

Hoewel geklee in ’n netjiese wit sjefbaadjie is ‘kok’ Johan Hugo eintlik ’n rekenmeester.
FOTO’S: CILENE BEKKER

Double bill for history buffs If history interests you there are two events of significant historical value coming up. From 2 - 17 July the international Anne Frank - A History for today, travelling exhibition will be hosted at the auditorium. The Frank family’s history is juxtaposed against world events before, during and after the rise to power of Hitler and the Nazi Party. By placing complex historical events against the backdrop of the life of one young person, the exhibition enables visitors to gain a greater understanding of human rights, and provides the opportunity to explore democracy and positive citizenship, diversity and community cohesion, and the terrible human consequences of persecution and war. Horse lady’s story comes to stage The Hermanus History Society in association with award-winning playwright and director Charles J. Fourie, will present an evening of entertaining theatre also at the auditorium on Friday 4 July. Fourie’s production of his play, Ella’s Horses, is based on the true story of the ‘horse lady of Hermanus’. It tells the story of the eccentric Ella Gordon, who barters a deal with her local priest to take her beloved horses and dogs to heaven. Ella Gordon was a Scottish immigrant who came to South Africa with a touring circus during the early 1900s. She settled in Hermanus and later moved to her farm at Karwyderskraal, where she built a church and school. She also dedicated her life to the local community and her beloved horses, for which she built the famed horse graveyard. It is the only one of its kind in South Africa and can still be seen today. The award-winning production features acclaimed television and film actors Deirdré Wolhuter and Leonard Moss. The evening is hosted to raise funds for the Hermanus History Society whose aim it is to restore the heritage and history of Hermanus for future generations. Your support of this event will be greatly appreciated. Tickets for the performance at 19:00 cost R80. For bookings contact Angela Heslop at e-mail: aheslop@hermanus.co.za. Tickets will also be available at the auditorium from 18:30 on the evening.
LADIES WHO LUNCH AND READ: The first Stanford Tourism’s Lit erary Lunch es series takes place at lunch time at Madre’s Kitchen on Sunday 6 July. The event will include a reading and fireside chat by fairly new South African author and star on the rise, Diane Awerbuck. The event begins with sherry on arrival at 12:15. The cost is R180 per head; there is seating for 40 only, so book now with Philippa at philippa.mur ray@gmail.com. Diane Awerbuck’s first book Gardening at Night, won the 2004 Commonwealth Writers’ Prize for best first book (Africa and the Caribbean). Her collection of short stories, Cabin Fever, includes Phosphorescence, which has been shortlisted for the Caine Prize for Af rican writing, which will be an nounced on 14 July. Her novel Home Remedies also gained much local praise

Taking the penguin plunge...
After bracing the icy cold water of Klein River in Stanford to take the an nual Penguin Plunge are Felix Unite, Bernard Oberholzer, Piet Human, Mortimer Lee and Su Wolf. ELBÉ VAN HEERDEN A total of 36 brave souls (and two dogs) took on the icy waters of Klein River in Stanford Saturday to help raise funds for Stanford Rotary during the fourth annual Penguin Plunge. The weather played along beautifully and drew quite a few plungers and chickens (who stood by for moral support) to the plunge. Anton Duivestein started the initiative in 2011 after a dare by one of the locals. “I enjoy swimming in the river throughout the year and I have heard about a similar initiative overseas. “I then approached the Rotarians, who said

they needed to raise funds for the local soup kitchen. “Now, every year on the Saturday closest to the shortest day, we take the plunge.” The event was sponsored by Springfontein Winery who provided glüwhein and hot chocolate for the plungers. A total of R6 140.00 was raised and handed over to Rotary.

Suné Greeff heads for Paarl KERRY VAN RENSBURG Tourism manager at the Overstrand Municipality for the past two years and eight months, Suné Greeff, has decided to spread her wings (and follow her heart) and is heading for Paarl. With 20 June being her last day as the champion of the Cape Whale Coast, the Hermanus Times caught up with her to find out how tourism in the Overstrand has benefited from her input and experience in the tourism industry, and what the future holds for her. Q: What have been some of the highlights for you as tourism manager for the Cape Whale Coast? A: We were the first region in the Western Cape to have its own brand ambassador; we now have a newly designed website for the CWC which is mobile friendly. I am also proud of the winter campaigns we established with Thompsons holiday packages, and the implementation, application and development of the CWC brand. Q: What challenges have come your way? A: There is a perception that we are a big team, but the reality is that for the first year it was only me, and now there is a second tourism officer to help. There are many administrative processes that come with working for local government.
Suné Greeff has resigned as the Overstrand Municipality’s tourism manager and takes up her new position at Drakenstein Tourism on 1 July. PHOTO: KERRY VAN RENSBURG What was overwhelming when I arrived in Hermanus, was having to do the compulsory Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA) training course. That was a personal challenge for me – a part-time course that lasted one-and-a-half years and a full time job. Q: Tell us more about your responsibilities as municipal tourism manager. A: It’s a very public role, a very service orientated role, and a very important role. I was here for the whole of the Whale Coast and to or-
ganise the four tourism bureaus in our area and promote the unique attractions of each town. It’s a diverse and totally hands on position – there is no delegation – you do it yourself and I had to be multi-skilled, doing everything from website marketing to campaigns, shows and exhibitions, and writing press releases. Q: Why the decision to leave? A: I am leaving for “personal reasons” which have to do with a special man in my life. He is in Durbanville and this is where I am headed. It’s been a long distance relationship and my new position as marketing manager at the Drakenstein Local Tourism Association, where I start on 1 July, has made the move that much easier. Q: What will you miss? A: In my career in the tourism industry, I learnt the most in this position. I feel proud to have worked for this municipality. The place (Hermanus) has really stolen my heart and it will be difficult to market another area. I believe in this area as a tourism product. Q: What is your advice to your successor? A: Work closely with the four tourism bureaus and maintain the relationship with their committees as team work is important. Have a good relationship with people in the tourism industry as a whole. Improve on what has already been done, as most of the structures are now in place.
Rotary Anns support worthy causes KERRY VAN RENSBURG Rotary Anns made generous cash donations to nine organisations active in the Hermanus community at a special function on Friday 20 June. The Hermanus Rotary Anns and a group of committed volunteers run the Bargain Box, which is predominantly a second-hand clothing shop. The money generated by this flagship fundraising shop is used to provide food parcels for needy families and to support numerous non-governmental organisations on a monthly basis. Most of the R114 000 (gross) the shop generated this year is used on the monthly donations, and a portion is allocated each year for a group of beneficiaries who send a wish list to the Anns. Christel Augustyn, outgoing past president of the Rotary Anns, said they visited each of the organisations that were selected to receive financial support, and were amazed at the good work being done. R30 000 was shared between the nine selected beneficiary organisations. Augustyn said they trimmed down the number of beneficiaries this year to give a more substantial amount to the worthy causes they have chosen

tresses; ) the Recycle Swop Shop will buy food items for their Swop Shop in Zwelihle; ) the NSRI will use their donation for needs at Sation 17; and ) the NG Church in Onrus wants to build a path for wheelchair users. At the end of the presentation of donations, Augustyn, who completed her term as president of the organisation, handed over the reigns to Monica Hamman, who will now continue as president of the Rotary Anns.

’Save a tie, save a child’ Mrs Cape Town 2013, fashion and image stylist Chantal Witthuhn from Kleinmond, will be hosting the “Save a Tie, Save a Child” Fashion Show Fundraising Event on 27 and 28 June. The concept of recycling and transforming old and unused ties was birthed over four years ago when Witthuhn visited friends in the UK and met a designer who was fashioning a waistcoat out of old ties. As an avid recycler, Witthuhn used the Mrs Cape Town platform to demonstrate her passion as a fashion stylist to promote and establish the event and cause. A request for old and unused ties was sent out and over 4 000 ties have been collected. Witthuhn contacted a few fashion designers and Hein Smit and Marshall Enyioma (both Tableview area) and Saskia Wicomb (Stellenbosch) have agreed to sponsor the designs, by funding and creating it at their own cost. Each will be designing 12 to 15 outfits, which will eventually be auctioned. The Mrs Cape Town charity
One of the designs made out of ties that will be showcased. beneficiary is the RoleModels Foundation Imfundo Project, an initiative and support for preschool and aftercare facilities in disadvantaged areas. The event will be hosted at the All Star Theatre, Cape Gate Lifestyle Centre in Brackenfell, on 27 and 28 June starting at 18:30, at R280pp. Bookings: Computicket.

EDITORIAL COMMENT Audacity of criminals Whether it’s a child’s bicycle pinched virtu ally from under your eyes, or laptops and cellphones stolen while your family is asleep, these ongoing criminal incidents reinforce the knowledge that none of us are immune to these kind of audacious acts. Hermanus has had a rough week on the criminal activity front, with cowardly crimi nals targeting a father of three who, be cause of a debilitating illness, has to rely on a mobility scooter to get around. And a woman waiting for a taxi was stabbed in the head because a thief wanted her cell phone. A robber at Pennypinchers did not get far with his loot, thanks to the quick action taken by a brave group of youngsters on bicycles and another member of the public who came to the rescue. And a sculpture at Gearing’s Point, which forms part of the outdoor public art exhibition, was damaged this week, either by vandals or some one trying to steal it from its plinth. While the statue cannot feel pain, it’s a sad day when a thing of beauty meant for all to enjoy is targeted by people who have no regard for other people or their things. And all these incidents combined are a harsh reminder that none of us are really safe from potential malicious attacks.
Don’t blame innocent creatures for invading Thank you for a well reasoned and intelligent comment on the baboons and the human problem. Living with wild life is not difficult if we accept our responsibilities and don’t blame innocent creatures for invading what is actually their long standing territory. Perhaps we have a few people who need any excuse to use a gun in order to satisfy their masculinity. The municipality must rethink the decision to stop the monitoring.

Wonder what is eating our hens?
Kondome by Fernkloof onvanpas
Reading the article on page two of the HT week before last has confused my thinking completely. We have a large property in Bergsig Street and have always kept chickens, enjoying the fresh bright orange farm eggs and listening to the beautiful sound of our rooster’s crowing early in the morning. Over the last four months we have lost twenty hens. Disappeared at night. We found some half eaten on the outside of our 2 m security fence. I thought at first it must be a wild cat, maybe a civet, but when a large hen that must weigh about 3-4 kilogram disappeared off her nest of eggs two weeks ago without a noise and just a couple of small feathers, I changed my suspicions to a lynx. After reading the article of the owl and seeing the photo of the buzzard on the same page I feel like a chameleon on a “Smarty” box. I do not know what to think. I have now locked up my remaining rooster and 4 hens in a large pen covered on the sides and on top but on Monday night something dug under the fence and took another hen. Back to the lynx idea. But like my neighbour says, with the bush covered plots in Bergsig Road anything is to be expected. This all happened after our dog died; I cannot wait for our new dog or for the municipality to clear the plots which the owner won’t do. Oh well, back to the yellow eggs.

Get with it, old chap! of, Kom by my ou! Brian Slade’s ‘Circulation should determine language policy’ (HT 19/6) refers. The writer decries ‘petty nationalism’ as being responsible for the Hermanus Times’s use of Afrikaans and pleads for pragmatism in its language policy. I don’t know Slade or his origins, but he seems to be an exemplar of the insufferably arrogant English cultural nationalism which has been bugging victims of it for centuries all over the world. Their mantra has always been: Let’s be pragmatic and give the English all they want, including our gold and diamonds and their empire, and then thank them for their generous civilising of us savages! However, in this day and age, Slade’s
attitude has become the amusing anachronism - sometimes even quite endearing, given its old-world naivety - of an imperialist still loyal to a long departed empire. There are even some Afrikaners among us who still, even more amusingly, share this sentiment. The slogan ‘God is in his Heaven, the Queen is on her throne, the natives in their place and all is well’ no longer applies, Mr. Slade, have you noticed? Ek kan maar net vir mnr. Slade sê: Kom by, my ou! (In deference to Mr. Slade’s pragmatism, bless him, a translation would be: ‘Get with it, old chap!’).

Alternative state of the nation address Enough is Enough. We must now get the country working. Affirmative action will cease. Suitability for the post will be the only criterion. Education will be given top priority. Apprenticeships and training facilities will be reintroduced, eg teachers training and nursing colleges and trade skills. Trade unions will be banned. Management and labour disputes will be settled by mutual discussions by those directly concerned, with an independent arbitrator. The decision will be binding. Workers or management who disagree will be given the option to resign. Political and economic refugees will be banned. Illegal immigrants will be removed. Immigrants from the East and elsewhere will be banned unless they have skills that we are unable to provide. Uncontrolled influx into urban areas will be regulated by availability of housing, services and job opportunities. Drug lords will be identified, convicted and expatriated. Unprofitable state enterprises eg SAA, Denel, Eskom, Telkom, will be privatised or closed down. Agriculture will be subsidised so as to become competitive with other countries. Farm employees will be able to purchase shares in farms based on their years of employment, with responsibility for both profit
and loss. Land redistribution will be stopped. Tribal Lands will be handed over to the local inhabitants and given Title Deeds. Unemployed youths will be given the opportunity to join Youth Brigades and be educated in basic skills. Government officials not performing will be removed and not transferred to alternative positions. Corruption on any level will not be tolerated. Offenders to be jailed without the option of a fine. The Cabinet to be reduced to manageable levels.

Congratulations FynArts, on Youth Day concert As lovers of classical music my wife and I used to go to the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra’s concerts after our retirement to Hermanus. This we had to give up considerable time ago due to advancing age (and petrol prices!). So, when a friend phoned to tell us that he had two tickets for the concert at the Hawston Thusong Hall, which they were unable to use due to a sudden family commitment, and would we like to have the tickets, we certainly accepted, never imagining what sort of treat we were in for! From the first note of Verdi, through Mendelsohn’s violin concerto superbly played by 17-year-old Jeffrey Armstrong, a wonderful cello concerto and solo played by Abel Selaocoe, to the finale, which was the 4th movement of Beethoven’s 5th Symphony – we were absolutely spellbound, as was the rest of the audience in the seemingly packed to capacity Thusong Hall. The conductor, Brandon Phillips, the soloists, and the young musicians of the Cape Philharmonic Youth Orchestra certainly deserved the ovation they received.

Homo Sapiens Where there is prosperity there is development. Where there is money there is animal abuse. Where there are humans there are selfish decisions. I love the “Fisherman’s Village” theme – but I want it all (aka Queen). If you don’t like the rapid expansion of Hermanus, go to Frasierburg or Elliot or Butterworth or Koffiefontein or Nieuwoudtville or any other small dot on the map. Kill the baboon – he eats my proteas, he steals my figs, he smells my bananas and breaks in to enjoy. Chop down the 100-year old Norwegian pine – it spoils my view of the ocean or horizon or whatever. Oh what a cute puppy – let’s buy and breed and dump at HAWS when we are fed-up. We are appalled by the horrible rituals undertaken by the Marikana miners to make themselves “invincible” (eg. burning sheep alive to eat their ashes), but we see the same trend among well-off Europeans. Shoot, kill, abandon, chop down, destroy – all for their own pleasure and convenience..... (Written in English by an Afrikaner – please feel free to revise).

What to do about barking dogs A question to the director of law enforcement in Hermanus. Kindly advise me of my rights as homeowner and taxpayer in Hermanus with regard to the incessant barking of neighbours’ dogs? Please also advise me and the public of our responsibilities regarding keeping dogs that bark unattended at home? I am rapidly losing my patience, and sanity, as a result of this problem.
BART OTTO, VERMONT
Neville Michaels, Director: Protection Services answers: The Overstrand Municipal By-law regarding the Keeping of Dogs and Cats P.N. 6540 of 2008, prohibits a person to keep a dog that barks excessively. Sec 4.(b) states that: “No person may keep a dog which barks, whimpers or howls to such an extent that it, or has another habit which, causes an unreasonable disturbance or nuisance to inhabitants of the neighbourhood.” A person that would like to lay a complaint regarding a dog nuisance may do so by contacting the Law Enforcement Department of the Over-
11
strand Municipality at 028 313 8996/5 during office hours. A statement will be taken from the complainant and the matter will be investigated by the Law Enforcement officials. The onus to control a dog is on the owner. An owner who does not comply with the provisions of the by-law may receive a written warning notice. Failure to adhere to the notice may result in further legal action whereby the owner may receive a fine of R100 for the first offence. A second offence may result in a fine of R300. If the owner is fined for the third time the matter will be referred directly to court without the choice of a fine and the dog may be impounded according to Sec 11(1)(a)(ii) of the by-law. It is however advisable that the complainant tries to resolve this matter in an amicable fashion by bringing it under the neighbour’s attention before laying a charge at the Law Enforcement office. The by-law is available at the libraries and on the official Overstrand Municipality website, www.overstrand.gov.za.
Thank you Hermanus for helping make FynArts work! Hermanus FynArts 2014 has come and gone, but hopefully the music will linger on. Thank you for helping Hermanus Tourism grow a festival that is starting to make waves! As Stefan Hundt, curator of the Sanlam exhibition, commented: FynArts is an unusual festival and a special one that has been conceptualised and grown from within the local community. Stefan is spot on. Suggestions, advice, support and feedback from so many people in Hermanus – and a growing number of highly respected artists, musicians and “festival people” further afield – is nudging the festival into becoming a festival to be reckoned with. The newly formed advisory board and the individual members of Hermanus Tourism management committee are committed to the concept of FynArts and have developed events and offered their expertise. A small and invaluable team of two has also lifted the media coverage for FynArts beyond the boundaries of Hermanus. And a growing band of volunteers offered their time to man exhibitions. It is these people who have contributed in a very real way to the success of FynArts. A special word of thanks is due to our sponsors. Sanlam Private Investments, Tollman/Bouchard Finlayson, Standard Bank, Overstrand Municipality, Business and Arts South Africa, Sumaridge, PSG, Benguela Cove, ADT and SAFE, Pam Golding and the Hermanus Times. Thank you also to a couple of benefactors who made it possible to offer seats to those less privi-
leged and contributed to some events in Hawston and Zwelihle. Thank you to Rotary who have been a generous and material support at concerts, and to Walker Bay Nursery and Okasie Flowers. And many thanks to the local media – Hermanus Times, Whale Talk, Splash and Village Explorer who generously included articles over many months and helped to create a buzz. Thank you too for the generous support of the accommodation members of Hermanus Tourism, we would not have been able to put up the growing number and calibre of presenters and musicians we were able to attract. It would be remiss not to give special mention to the staff of the Windsor and Marine Hotels who coped with enthusiasm and commitment with an influx of visitors to exhibitions, workshops, tastings, dinners and a great deal of sponsored accommodation. The galleries too have worked hard to put on special exhibitions. And then there is Mission Control – the fabulous and ever calm Tourism-office team of Gardean, Chantel, Anneline, Eric and Julie under the leadership of Celeste Scheepers. Their support, dedication, and their determination that all would run smoothly – and their insight into what was needed when, where and how was overwhelming. On behalf of Hermanus Tourism thank you Hermanus. For everything. Roll on FynArts 2015.

Councillors’ pay still under scrutiny I refer to the Budget Office’s response to my asking for justification for a 12%+ increase for Councillors and must admit that this is the lamest excuse, for trying to avoid the issue, I have seen in years. Allow me to quote the numbers taken from the 2013/2014 and this year’s budget reports. Bear in mind that a budget runs over 12 months and it seems that there is a tendency to make interim adjustments to the annual budget during the financial year, which gets lost in “translation” or interpretation. Budget ReSour- port ce 2013/ 2014 (Page 71) Approved budget for year 2012/ 2013 R000) Basic Sala- R6,710 ries Cell phone R361 allowance Total

5,26% R545
R7,071 R7,577 7,16% R8,516
44,21 % 12,39 %
The practice of interim adjustments to the budget leads to excessive increases in year on year costs that are conveniently not taken into account when compiling the new budget. Unfortunately the adjusted budget becomes the new base, which does not reflect reality of the cost increase. The following information was taken from page 15 of this year’s budget report. Full year forecast Audi- for ted 2013/ Out2014 come (infor clude year inte2012/ rim 2013 (R000) adjustments ) (R000)

R8,516 6,74%
It is clear that the audited outcome for 2012/2013 did include cell phone allowances and that the argument of non inclusion is therefore irrelevant and could be construed
as an effort to mislead the readers. I re-iterate, irrespective how you interpret the numbers, there is an increase in Councillors’ costs (Salaries and Cell Phone Allowances) amounting to 12%+ plus, be that for the current year or the next year. How is this justifiable?
PETRUS HENDRIKSZ HERMANUS
Budget office answers: The writer continues to ignore the purpose of Table SA22 and the explanation regarding the classification of costs, referring to it as irrelevant and therefore will never come to the correct conclusion regarding salary increases. Further explanations seem futile and therefore this matter will remain at an impasse. For this reason, the published Government Gazettes that regulate the determination of upper limits of salaries, allowances and benefits of different members of municipal councils, that are applied annually for the payment of salaries, allowances and benefits to councillors, are hereby included for the writer to calculate the year-on-year increases. The following gazettes are included: • Government Gazette 37281 of 29 January 2014, applicable from 1 July 2013 • Government Gazette 35962 of 7 December 2012, applicable from 1 July 2012 • Government Gazette 34869 of 14 December 2011, applicable from 1 July 2011 • Government Gazette 33867 of 10 December 2010, applicable from 1 July 2010 It should be noted that Overstrand municipality is classified as a Grade 3 municipality for the application of the tables in the gazettes.
Cruel carnage of baboons unnecessary In response to your front page article, Baboons Killed, 19 June, it would appear that the 21st Century in which we live, is the age of increasing terrorism. To kill or maim any living creature without the courage to confront and disclose your identity and purpose for your action is to devalue your integrity to that of the level of a basest criminal. Everything and anything appears to be permissible in modern society on the precept that the action taken is “my human right” and thereby justified. We should also remember that the baboons inhabited this area long before humans. The authorities recent claim that they are unable to afford the monitors shows a total disregard for the natural heritage of our remaining wild life. We have been asked by tourists on several occasions whether there are organised walks in the Fernkloof Reserve not only to see the indigenous flora but particularly also to spot the baboons and other animals. These monitors could be sustained financially by using their skills and knowledge in conducting tours such as this. There has to be a way around this present situation so as to prevent the unnecessary and cruel carnage of innocent creatures.

BABOONS CAN BE REHABILITATED: This picture was sent in by HT reader Ann Leslie who was involved with C.A.R.E., a baboon rehabilitation programme in Phalaborwa, before moving to Hermanus. 13 Parents learn how to raise healthy, happy children HermanusTimes
Algemeen General
More than 100 parents with children in one of the seven schools in the Greater Hermanus area that participated in the parental skills programme, have successfully completed a ten week training course. They were presented with certificates at a special Heart-to-Heart Parenting awards function held at the Overstrand Auditorium on Thursday 19 June. Wendy Colyn from Sustainable Futures Trust, heard about the General Motors South Africa Foundation, which initiated a Parental Skills Programme, with the focus on Positive Parenting, in 2009 already. Up until last year the programme was mainly presented in the Eastern Cape. Colyn made it possible for the programme to be presented to a group of parents from Hermanus Waldorf School, and when Friends of the Schools became aware of the impact it had, they decided to become involved with the view to rolling it out to more parents in the community. General Motors South Africa Foundation agreed to work with The Sustainable Futures Trust and The Friends of the Schools by sponsoring the training of 15 facilitators in Hermanus. The South African Schools Act urges parents to play an active role in the edu-

cation of their children, and with this in mind, the organisations involved in bringing the parental skills course to Hermanus sought the support of the principals of the seven schools they targeted. The Friends of the Schools and the facilitators believe that the programme should be presented twice a year in order to reach as many parents as possible. Mayor Nicolette Botha-Guthrie congratulated the parents on their achievement and said: “Your efforts are to the benefit of the whole community.” The cost of a 10-week course to the seven schools in Greater Hermanus amounted to about R35 000, and was made possible through private sponsorship. ) The Friends of the Schools is a voluntary grouping of Greater Hermanus residents interested in the improvement of education in local schools. Friends of the Schools aim to offer support to schools, school governing bodies and parent associations in Greater Hermanus in an attempt to improve and broaden the learning environment of pupils. To find out more about the organisation, call Pieter de Jager on 083 737 5412 or Ben Solomon on 083 257 8378.

COMPASSION: So often people say they are too old to make a difference! But an 86year old resident of Golden Harvest, has not let that stop her. She has so much compassion and therefore knits little sets of clothing (vest, bootees, matineé jacket and bonnet) for under privileged newborn babies. She donated several of these sets to Mayor Nicolette BothaGuthrie with the request that they be handed to Aids babies at the Her manus Provincial Hospital. The Mayor, in turn, handed the parcel to Dr Stephanie Perold (right) at the Provincial Hospital.

What is brachytherapy (internal radiotherapy)? Your specialist may suggest that you have internal radiotherapy to treat prostate cancer, if contained within the prostate gland. This is called localised prostate cancer. This focused internal radiotherapy treatment is called brachytherapy. Your specialist may recommend this treatment if you have low to intermediate risk disease. Brachytherapy can be offered as an alternative to External Beam Radiation Therapy or Radical Prostatectomy (surgical removal of the prostate). Always consult with

Helping ageing family and friends cope with hearing loss As hearing systems age it can become increasingly difficult to hear in background noise, localise sound sources, ‘keep-up’ with conversation and to tolerate loud sounds. Felicity Maclennan-Smith, a local audiologist, says family and friends can make communication easier by: • Ensuring that you are in the same room before speaking • Getting the person’s attention before speaking by touch or by calling their name • Making eye contact so as to ensure that you are seen – lip reading
is instinctive to all of us • Speaking normally but at a slightly slower rate – do not over articulate or shout • Turning competing noise such as TVs and radios down or moving away from dishwashers, vacuum cleaners etc. • Re-wording your sentence if the person does not understand – do not just repeat – some words are easier to hear than others These considerations will be welcomed by both people who wear hearing aids and those who have not yet taken the plunge to switch to hearing aids.

Mostert, dr. Schoombee & Vennote, Napier – dr. Truter, Bredasdorp – dr. Bosch & Vennote, dr. Retief; Kleinmond – dr. Du Plessis & Vennote; Gansbaai – dr. M. Barnard & Vennote. Diet tips for office workers Five a day Try to eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables a day to prevent a variety of degenerative diseases, such as heart disease, different types of cancers, and obesity. Select one dark green or dark yellow fruit or vegetable every day (yellow peaches, apricots, paw paw, sweet melon, mangoes, carrots, pumpkin, broccoli, spinach, or sweet potatoes) to supply you with beta-carotene. Eat fish three or more times a week Fish is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which protect us against a variety of diseases and ensure a healthy brain and nervous system. Make wholewheat sandwiches or salads with tuna, mackerel, or salmon for lunch. Vitamin and mineral supplements If you are eating a balanced diet, you probably don’t need supplements. But if you suffer from tiredness, depression or irritability, if you are recovering from an illness and have returned to work too soon, or burn the candle at both ends, then it may be a good idea to take a vitamin and mineral supplement. Use complete supplements that contain all the known vitamins and minerals, because

many nutrients work better when taken in combination (e.g. B-vitamins are more effective when you have an adequate supply of all the vitamins in the B-complex). But don’t overdose on supplements. Just because one tablet is good for you, does not mean that you should be taking two or three a day. Go easy at staff parties Staff parties are usually fatal for anyone who is trying to diet. Stick to smaller portions and dilute your drinks with soda water or sugar-free cold drinks and have two glasses of water for every alcoholic drink you sip. Counteract constipation Individuals who sit in front of a PC all day and eat low-fibre foods can easily develop chronic constipation. Don’t resort to harsh laxatives (including herbal products), as they will destroy your natural bowel movements and lead to laxative dependence. Eat plenty of high-fibre foods (wholewheat bread, and crackers, high-fibre cereals, fruit, vegetables, and legumes), drink four glasses of water and get active to stimulate peristalsis. – DR IV.

FUNKY: THE C4 PICASSO OFFERS VALUE AND VERSATILITY
Citroën C4 Picasso is a trendsetter MOTORPRESS Citroën is confident its new C4 Picasso multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) or people-mover will be another global trendsetter, thereby following in the tracks of the original Xsara Picasso, which was launched to much acclaim in 1999. Initial response to the latest model from the motoring press and buyers in Europe, where it was launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show last year, has been very positive and enthusiastic. Two derivatives of the C4 Picasso have joined the rapidly growing range of Citroën vehicles on sale in South Africa – the Seduction and Intensive – both powered by a 1.6-litre e-HDi 115 turbo diesel engine developing 85 kW of power and 270 Nm of torque. Power goes to the front wheels via a six-speed manual transmission. These smooth-running engines offer sparkling performance with a top speed of 189 km/h and 11,8 seconds for the 0-100km sprint, while fuel economy is very impressive too, with a consumption of 4F/100 km for the combined cycle with CO2 emissions of only 105 g/ km. Pricing of this trending five-seater MPV is very keen, with the Seduction model launching from R325 900 and the even more comprehensively equipped Intensive version from R345 900. “This new platform is significantly lighter than the previous version and provides the opportunity to lower the engine, thereby the centre of gravity too, making the car more stable while also providing extra interior space,” added Bowring. “The design team in France has coined the term ‘Technospace’ for
the overall design philosophy behind the spacious new Citroen C4 Picasso as it combines the latest ideas from Citroën’s Créative Technologie division with the design possibilities arising from the use of a new, lightweight platform, which uses aluminium and high tensile steel to reduce weight and gain in torsional rigidity. Travelling becomes a relaxing experience in the new C4 Picasso with the exclusive Lounge Pack comprising front seats with a massage and seat warming function, while the front passenger can also stretch his or her legs using the extending seat squab. All the seats are fitted with Relax headrests to provide optimum neck support. It is like travelling Business Class! Although comfort is always top of the list with the Citroën design and development team, they do not stint in terms of driving enjoyment, which means outstanding handling and roadholding. Of course, being a Citroën means the latest C4 Picasso should also be innovative with unusual features, which is the case. The exterior styling is pacesetting, with bold, modern lines tending towards a futuristic look with a shorter front overhang and wider track giving it an aggressive, roadhugging stance. The attractive front end features a new look for the trademark Citroën chevrons, while slim, LED daytime running lights extend the line of the grille, sitting just above the very slender headlights. Fog lamps add the finishing touch to this very original Citroën signature in lights. The 3D styling effect for the LED lights at the rear was inspired by the rear light treatment of the recent Tubik, Survolt and Revolte concept cars, displayed at recent motor shows and employed on the Citroën

DS3 last year. The attractive styling of the latest C4 Picasso can be shown off to good effect with a choice of five colours: Polar White, Aluminium Grey, Ruby red, Teles Blue and Shark Grey. Uniquely-styled alloy wheels are highlights of the exterior styling. The Seduction shows off 16” Viper wheels and the Intensive sports 17” Anaconda rims, both with Michelin tyres. The 7” touch screen with its seven touch-sensitive buttons controls all in-car functions including satellite navigation, dual-zone climate control, and an audio system with six speakers, USB connectivity, Bluetooth with media streaming and an additional USB socket all within a finger’s reach. The 12” panoramic HD screen displays essential driving information. Drivers can even display a personal photo as a screen backdrop using a USB key. There are front park assist sen-
sors on both models while the Intensive model also has front park assist sensors and the Park Assist system for easy parallel parking. Storage spaces abound, including two beneath the floor of the second row of seats. Seating consists of five individual seats, with the three seats in the second row offering the convenience of occupants being able to adjust the rake of the backrest. There are a host of convenience items including programmable cruise control and speed limiter, an electronic handbrake with hill start assist, automatic on-off for the headlamps and windscreen wipers, sliding driver’s and passenger’s sun blinds with sun visors and courtesy mirrors, “find my car” feature with illumination by means of the interior lights and flashing hazard warning lights and a “guide me home” headlamp function. Additional equipment on the In-
tensive variant includes LED front indicators, kerb lighting (puddle lights in the exterior rear view mirrors), removable and rechargeable boot light/torch, interior mood lighting, integrated, retractable rear side window blinds, rear seat conversation mirror and front fog lamps with a cornering function. Luggage space is very generous with 537 litres capacity below the parcel shelf, which can be enlarged to a very spacious 1851 litres when the rear seat backrests are folded forward. In addition, the powered tailgate can be opened remotely by the press of a button. As one would expect from Citroën there is a vast array of standard safety and security equipment, including ABS brakes with electronic brake force distribution (EBD), emergency braking assistance (EBA), electronic stability control (ESC) with intelligent traction control; automatic activation of the hazard warning lights in case of rapid deceleration or impact, six air bags and a deflated tyre indicator. The Citroën C4 Picasso comes with a 3-year/100 000 km warranty, 5-year/100 000 km service plan, 3year 24-hour roadside assistance, with the extra cost option of extending the warranty to 5 years/ 100 000km. Then there is the option of purchasing Citroën Freedrive, which consists of a 5 year/100 00 km warranty and a 5 year/100 000 km maintenance plan. “We are very proud of this latest addition to the Citroën model lineup in South Africa, as it is class-leading in many aspects of its specification besides being exceptionally stylish too. We are confident it will be yet another trendsetter from the chevron brand,” concluded PCSA Managing Director, Francis Harnie.

Mercedes-Benz South Africa Silver in Europe-Africa QUICKPIC The much anticipated J.D. Power Initial Quality Study (IQS) has placed the MBSA plant in East London amongst the top motor manufacturers in 2014, according to their poll of American consumers after 90 days of ownership of new models in this market. The MBSA plant has received a silver commendation in the Europe-Africa manufacturing region from this esteemed organisation, whose IQS quality rating is upheld by many in the international automotive industry as a benchmark for quality and reliability. As the only African plant on the list of awardees, this is the sixth consecutive award for Daimler AG’s South African plant. The company’s J.D. Power award collection now boasts two gold awards (2009 and 2011) and three silver awards (2012, 2013 and 2014) in the Europe-Africa region, as well as the ultimate accolade – a platinum award in 2010, as the highest ranking plant in the world supplying the US market. MBSA CEO and vice-president of manufacturing, Arno van der Merwe, attributes the consistency of the manufacturing plant’s performance to a focus on efficiency improvement and stringent quality systems within the produc-
tion process. “While technology and process excellence is of vital importance, equally essential is the mind-set and passion of our employees,” van der Merwe says. The East London plant produced the W204 C-Class for both the local and US markets, and registered only 27 problems per 100 vehicles (27PP100) surveyed by J.D. Power in 2014. The gold award recipient in the Europe-Africa category performed only one point better, at 26PP100 vehicles. “This clearly shows the necessity to run a tight ship at our plant in terms of reliability, efficiency and quality,” van der Merwe adds. The W204 C-Class model has been replaced by the latest model variant from Daimler AG, and started production at the East London plant in May 2014. “The fact that we have maintained the quality of our production in a runout year, while simultaneously preparing both facility and employees for a new and more advanced model, proves the level of focus of our employees,” van der Merwe concludes. “We are extremely proud of this award and its implication for our status as a first-class manufacturer.” As one of only four Daimler AG plants world-wide selected to produce the luxury new C-Class, MBSA has invested in excess of R5 billion into the South African economy between

2011 and 2015. Close to R60 million has been channelled into training initiatives, with more than 1 200 training interventions and assignments to various international plants. In addition, nearly 900 unemployed people from the Border Kei region have been upskilled as part of the new C-Class training programme.

HAWS in need of full roof covers JANINE VAN DER RIET The Hermanus Animal Welfare Society (HAWS) is in need of 30 roof sheets to fully enclose their large dog kennels. They are asking for 30 people to each donate or sponsor one transparent poly carb 3 m x 53 cm sheet at a cost of R215 each. The donated tin roof sheets last year were used to put up a roof in the outdoor run so the dogs could run for shelter when it rains. But in their overnight kennels, the roof only covers their sleeping area and the front is open to the rain so the dogs get wet when they come to the front end of their cage. The sheets

need to be transparent so the sun shines through them and lightweight for the kennel walls to support them and should not be made of asbestos. Judy Miller, volunteer at HAWS says they have started a pledge and so far they have six sponsored roof sheets. If you would like to join the roof sheet pledge, call 028 312 1281 for info or to make a donation. If you would like to make a donation, deposit an amount to Hermanus Animal Welfare Society, account number 0822 633 10, Standard Bank current account, code 050312. Reference “ROOF”.

The bergwind of Tuesday was true to form and ushered in some colder weather on Wednesday. About 40 guys braved the ominous clouds and took the plunge, and as it turned out discretion was definitely the better part of valour when at about 14:00 the heavens opened and 40 dry golfers turned into 40 very wet golfers. In a dramatic turn of events three players did manage to complete the day’s golf and therefore, by default, take the prizes. Congratulations to our hardy boys, Gert Keuler, Christo Nel and David Schutte. David took the B division honours, Christo second, and overall the monthly medal
went to Christo Nel on a gross 88. For shear tenacity, well played! Saturday was again one of those crystal-clear days between the cold fronts. I had the privilege of playing and must say that the course is playing wonderfully especially for this time of year. Taking money off Danie van der Spuy and the boys is always fun. Our competition was a betterball stableford and taking the honours this week on the north course was André Gouws and Johan Stander on 45 points, winning on the south course on a terrific 47 points was Herman Kühn and Adré Smit. The ball pool paid to 43 and there were 4 two clubs. Regarding the league teams, our Kruger side took a hit at Kleinmond 2.5 to 5.5. Well played Kleinmond. Our Brodie side, however, lead by our capable vice captain Stephen van Der Merwe, crushed Bredasdorp here at home, 8-0. Have a great week, keep calm and go golfing.
Sport on TV roundup What a sporting weekend awaits us! At 17:00 on Saturday our Springboks play against Scotland in Port Elizabeth. Super Rugby starts again in Australia and New Zealand with six games being played on Friday and Saturday mornings. Grass-court tennis is back and Wimbledon is shown on two channels, Supersport 2 and 7. Golf and the BMW International from Munich, which was won last year by Ernie Els, can be enjoyed, with eight South Africans participating in the tournament.
The World Cup in Brazil will have reached the knock-out stages, starting on Saturday evening – “upsets galore.” Brazil has a population of over 200 million. There are 8 television directors at the World Cup; French, English and German. Each chooses their own team of operators and 3 000 staff are involved in the end products. It is estimated that a cumulative total of some 26 billion people will watch the soccer. Holland have beaten Chile. Hup Hup Holland! By a sportsfan(atic)

Youth sports challenge a success Sport, fun and games were on the agenda at the Overstrand Municipality’s Youth Month celebrations held in the Mount Pleasant Moffat Hall recently. The activities included netball, 5-a-side soccer and indoor mini cricket as well as chess, dominoes, mrabaraba and kerem. Teams from Gansbaai, Stanford, Mount Pleasant, Zwelihle, Hawston and Kleinmond participated in the event, which was aimed at those aged 15 and younger.
Despite the cold and wet weather, Cllr Lianda Beyers-Cronjé extended a warm welcome to all the participants. In the indoor cricket segment, Kleinmond u.12 boys went all out and snatched the tightly contested final against Gansbaai by a nailbiting one run. In the netball tournament, the Kleinmond girls retained their trophy after beating Hawston 20-17. In the soccer tournament it was a walk in the park as the Zwelihle boys beat Stanford 10-5 and retained their title.
DOGS compete in Kleinmond The Dogs competed in a Fourball Alliance competition at Kleinmond Golf Club on 24 June. Real Attackers lose, draw On Saturday 21 June Real Attackers lost 4-0 against Mighty Blues, who proved too mighty. The next day however, when Real Attackers played against Eastern Cape United at the Zwelihle Stadium’s field A, they were trailing 1-0 in the first half. There was an outcry from the crowd for the well-known striker from Zwelihle to be brought on and 5 minutes into the second half, Abongile Jijo Mafevuka proved his worth by striking against their opponents to equalise the score to a respectable 1-1. Mafevuka did not play on Saturday and the team

was therefore at loss for a striker of substance. The underfoot conditions were terrible, so much so that all matches were cancelled the previous week. Last weekend some matches were postponed because of the rain. The rain itself was not the problem, however but the field was waterlogged to such an extent that it looked like a dam and no ball control was possible. Even the past weekend, the field was so full of mud on the south side that the opponents had a field day scoring on the sandy, drier side.
