Sharks on a feeding frenzy SHARKS IN THE BAY! Spectacular. This is the only word well­known photogra­ pher Dave de Beer could get out after he captured a shark leaping out of the water on Tuesday afternoon. He says more than 100 bronze whaler sharks (bronzies) were having a feeding frenzy between the New Harbour and Old Har­ bour. The sharks were between 100 and 150 metres from shore and went crazy in the water, jumping out like dolphins.

This photo was taken off Gearing’s Point. Apparently the bay is full of bait fish which the sharks were feeding on.

“In 10 years of photographing whales, sharks and nature, this is only the sec­ ond time I have seen this,” De Beer said.

If the proposed tariff increases of the Overstrand Municipality’s draft budget for the 2014-2015 financial year are anything to go by, residents of the Overstrand are going to have to tighten their belts even further.

The draft budget report was tabled during a council meeting on Thursday 20 March and will be considered for approval and adoption during the 28 May council meeting.

Until then it is open for inspection and comment by the community and other stakeholders from 27 March until 30 April.

The proposed tariffs for the new financial year, to be implemented on 1 July 2014, include: . Property rates – an increase of 15% on commercial land with im-

provements, residential land with improvements and farming/agricultural land. There will be no increase in rates on undeveloped erven, municipal properties or approved improvement districts. . Water supply – an increase of 6% in all six blocks of the stepped tariff for household consumption, from the lowest (0-6 kF) to the highest (above 60 kF). The 6 kF water per 30-day period is now only granted free of charge to registered indigents. . Electricity – an increase of 6% in the basic monthly charge per meter, plus an 8,20% increase in all three blocks of the stepped tariff.

This increase applies to both credit meters and pre-paid meters for domestic households. Registered indigents will again be granted 50 kW per 30-day period free of charge. . Sanitation – an increase of 6,32%

The Consolidated Overview of the report shows that total revenue has grown by 5,69% for the 2014-’15 financial year when compared to the 2013-’14 Adjustments Budget.

“Revenue generated from rates and service charges forms a significant percentage of the revenue basket for the municipality,” the report reads. “In the 2013/2014 financial year, revenue from rates and service charges totalled R624 million, which will increase to R678 million

According to the draft budget report, the Overstrand Municipality needs to generate the required revenue to continue improving the quality of services to its citizens.

“In these tough economic times strong revenue management is fundamental to the financial sustainability of the municipality,” reads the report. “The reality is that we are faced with an increasing population (7th highest growth nationally as per the 2011 census), development backlogs and poverty. The increase in property rates is attributed to the fact that the increases have been lagging below inflation over the past years. The report further states that increases in service charges have been kept at average inflation, with electricity at the level of the Nersa approval of Eskom tariffs.

“This is eroding the surpluses on services due to higher than inflation percentage increases of Eskom bulk tariffs. Given that these tariff increases are determined by external agencies, the impact they have on the municipality’s electricity tariffs are largely outside the control of the municipality. Discounting the impact of these price increases in lower consumer tariffs will erode the municipality’s future financial position and viability.” Read more on the draft budget on page 5.

Gruesome accident scene on road to Kleinmond JANINE VAN DER RIET An accident on the R43 on the “Honeymoon Bridge” between Hermanus and Kleinmond left one person dead and three injured on Tuesday late afternoon.

According to lieutenant Fadila September, spokesperson for the Hermanus Police, the driver of a car on his way to Hermanus apparently lost control of the vehicle on the bridge, drove into the barrier next to the road and collided with a truck with a trailer, travelling towards Kleinmond.

The person in the car was killed on impact and the three people in the truck were injured and taken by EMR ambulance service to Mediclinic Hermanus.

The name of the deceased cannot be made public until his family has been notified and the body has been identified.

The 34-year-old deceased is from Hermanus.

One man died and three men were in­ jured in an accident on the R43 between Hermanus and Kleinmond on 25 March.

PARALLEL ROAD DECLARED OPEN: The Parallel Road was opened on Wednesday 19 March by Mayor Nicolette Botha­Guthrie in front of the Mount Pleasant swimming pool. The vision for this road is for motorists to be able to travel between Hawston and Hermanus without getting onto the provincial road in order to relieve the congestion and pressure on the R43 and to be the future public transport route. The road will also provide safe traffic operations, pedestrian walkways, cycle lanes and raised intersections for speed control and safe access from side roads. This project has only finished its first phase and will cost more than R100 million and will take between seven to 10 years to implement. Blind man’s first swim in the sea A blind man’s dream of swimming in the sea came true on Saturday 22 March and it’s a day he will never forget.

Johan Booysen (71) is a resident of Huis Brevis, which is a retirement centre in Worcester at the Institute for the Blind.

On Saturday Johan visited Grotto beach and was able to experience the thrill of the breaking waves, thanks to some help from Sea and Sand.

Estelle Louw, the matron at Huis Brevis, asked the Hermanus police if there was someone in Hermanus who could assist her with Johan’s wish, as he would need to be taken into the sea under supervision. They put her in contact with Sea and Sand and Sparks Esterhuysen and his lifeguards were on hand to welcome Johan, his wife Nicci and Estelle to Grotto beach on Saturday.

Sparks used a short rope, which Johan held onto and off they went into the breakers.

Estelle says: “Johan was so excited about his swim in the sea and can’t stop talking about it. He loved feeling the water against his body and he thoroughly enjoyed the waves.”

Sparks (72) says: “If we get some money we should do this once or twice a year for all the

blind people. We must reach out to people and also realise just how blessed we are.”

Johan never had the opportunity to swim in the sea until now, because nobody ever took him deep enough to swim.

He is very grateful and can’t stop thanking everyone who help this dream of his come true.

After the swim, Estelle took Johan and Nicci for lunch at Wimpy in Hermanus.

Johan told her: “My body and soul feel alive.”

Man caught with gun safe JANINE VAN DER RIET

A man was caught red handed with stolen goods on Wednesday at 04:00 in Zwelihle.

Warrant Officer Mtobile Koti and Sgt Fundile Mavatha were on duty and were patrolling in Lusiba Street in Zwelihle when they noticed a man trying to hide something.

According to Lieutenant Fadila September, spokesperson for the Hermanus Police, the members stopped and confronted the man as he was acting suspiciously.

They found a gun safe in his possession.

On further investigation, the members discovered that the safe had been stolen from a house in Zwelihle, which belongs to a security officer.

The suspect broke into the house and removed the safe. A case of house breaking was opened. The 23-year-old suspect was arrested.

House robbery in Onrus JANINE VAN DER RIET Goods to the value of R76 500 were stolen from a house in Onrus on 22 March at midnight.

The occupants were in the house when the housebreaking occurred.

According to Lieutenant Fadila September, everything in the house was locked and closed except for one window.

“The woman was woken up by a noise in the bedroom and saw two men. She shouted loudly, but

one suspect pulled her down to the floor and instructed her to keep quiet,” said September.

The suspects took cameras, laptops and jewellery and fled the scene. A 23 and 28-year-old man were arrested after Hermanus police and detectives followed up on leads and the men appeared in the Hermanus Magistrate’s Court.

A case of house robbery has been opened for further investigation. No one was injured in the incident.

Lovers quarrel ends in murder in Police were called to attend to a murder scene in Phola Street in Zwelilhe in the early hours of Sunday morning.

When police arrived at the scene they found that a man had been killed.

According to statements, the deceased and his girlfriend

were fighting and he stabbed her. She then tried to protect herself from the assault and stabbed him.

He sustained multiple wounds. The 29-year old suspect was arrested and appeared in the Hermanus Magistrate’s Court.

JANINE VAN DER RIET Cases of abalone poaching have increased in the Overstrand area in the past few weeks and four people have been arrested in three different incidents since 12 March.

Ian Cameron, head of community safety of AfriForum, says the increase is directly linked to organised crime.

Colonel Nomana Adonis, station commander of the Hermanus Police says abalone poaching is an ongoing crime and has never stopped.

“The increase in confiscations can be attrib-

uted to both better intelligence and better cooperation between the police, the community and Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF). Several operations were conducted after information was received from the community, which yielded good successes,” Adonis said.

On 19 March, in two separate incidents, a policeman and his wife were arrested, as well as a 30-year-old man from Hawston.

The policeman and his wife were arrested with R1,3 million worth of abalone in their possession.

On arrival members entered the premises and found 13 bags containing 1 819 units of abalone in a wendy house.

On further investigation they also found seven crayfish, seven crayfish tails and two units of abalone in the main house. A boat and vehicle were also confiscated and handed in as exhibits.

The 48-year-old man, a police officer stationed at the Sea Border Unit in Simon’s Town, and his 40-year-old wife were arrested and detained at the Hermanus Police Station.

The confiscated abalone was handed over to the DAFF. The couple appeared in the Hermanus Magistrate’s Court for the illegal possession of abalone and crayfish.

The 30-year-old man from Hawston was caught in Kleinvlei, Cape Town on the same day.

Police officers from the Western Cape K9 Dog Unit and Flying Squad were on vehicle patrol duties near Stratford Avenue in Eersterivier at around 13:35 when they noticed a red VW Polo parked on the side of the road. The driver of the vehicle then sped off and a chase ensued.

The police eventually managed to stop the vehicle at a house in Fern Road, in Rustdal where the suspect jumped out of the vehicle and tried to flee, but was quickly caught.

When the police searched the vehicle they found 37 plastic bags of abalone containing 2 965 units worth about R1,4 million stashed inside the Polo.

The man, from Chester Road in Hawston, was arrested and the VW Polo impounded. He was charged with possession of abalone, reckless and negligent driving and failing to comply with police instructions.

A week prior to these arrests, on 12 March, a 26-year-old woman from Hawston was also arrested on abalone related charges.

At around 11:45, on 12 March, police received information of abalone being stored at

a house in Hermanus. Hermanus Police in conjunction with DAFF and the police’s provincial tactical response team, executed an operation at the address and confiscated 4 980 units of abalone that was being stored in an outside room.

The woman was arrested and appeared in the Hermanus Magistrate’s court.

All three cases are being investigated by the authorities.

Cameron says AfriForum has lodged a complaint regarding the poor service they have been receiving from the provincial commissioner, Lieutenant-General Arnold Lamoer.

AfriForum has allegedly sent several letters and emails in an official capacity to ask for the plan of action for the full reinstatement and recovery of the K9-Unit that was burnt down in Hawston in November 2012.

“Thus far Lamoer and the Department of Public Works have not come to the party to rapidly assist with the dog unit’s re-implementation.”

AfriForum also asked for new specialised police units in the Overstrand area to combat abalone poaching and the thriving drug trade.

“There is no cooperation from the commissioner. We have been trying for more than two months to start a discussion or at least direct email communication with him, yet it seems he is not interested,” Cameron said.

According to Lieutenant Colonel André Traut, a provincial police spokesperson, Lamoer has received the mentioned correspondence from AfriForum and has acknowledged receipt thereof.

“The matter is regarded as a priority and is receiving the personal attention of the provincial commissioner. Police buildings and accommodation are the responsibility of the Department of Public Works and this matter is dealt with by the latter. The K9 Unit is in full operation and the accommodation issue has not affected policing or service delivery of the unit,” Traut said.

Infrastructure high priority in budget CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1.

Operational budget The total operating expenditure for the 2014-’15 financial year has been appropriated at R869 million which translates into a budgeted deficit of R83,7 million. When compared to the 2013-’14 Adjustments Budget, operating expenditure has grown by 4,95%. Operational repairs and maintenance was identified as a strategic imperative owing to the ageing of the municipality’s infrastructure.

For the 2014-’15 financial year, 8,4% or R162 million of the total budget will be spent on repairs and maintenance, of which R137 million is for infrastructure, including roads, water and electricity.

The budget allocation for municipal employee related costs totals R280,7 million which equals 32,2% of the total operating expenditure and falls within the NT norm of 25-40%. Salary increases for councillors have been factored into the budget at an increase of 6,7% for councillors, at 7,1% for senior managers and 11,3% for other municipal staff. The total cost of councillors and executives amounts to R17,93 million.

According to the report vacancies have been significantly rationalised downwards

and a R7,75 million contingency for vacancies not to be filled, has been provided. This could however have a negative impact on service delivery.

Capital budget The capital budget of R93 million for 2014-’15 is 26,5% less when compared to the 2013-’14 Adjustments Budget. According to the report, the reduction is due to the available resources to fund the capital budget.

The capital programme decreases to R86 million and R81 million in the next two financial years, notwithstanding that an estimated R100 million is required annually to sustain capital infrastructure.

An amount of R59,7 million has been appropriated to develop new infrastructure in 2014-’15, which represents 64% of the total capital budget of R93 million. Electricity infrastructure receives the highest allocation of R17 million, followed by water (14,8%) and waste water (14,3%).

Some of the salient projects to be undertaken over the medium term includes, among others, the replacement of Overstrand water pipes (R13,8 M), the new waste cell at Karwyderskraal (R10,2 M), the Swartdamweg site development (R6,77 M), the upgrade and rehabilitation of roads in Zwelihle (R4,65 M) and the upgrade of the

No more baboon monitoring JANINE VAN DER RIET Baboon monitoring might not continue in the Overstrand area after 1 July 2014, due to budget constraints.

Mayor Nicolette Botha-Guthrie said in her speech during the 2014/2015 draft budget meeting, the baboon monitor system, as an unfunded mandate, will be abolished as from 1 July 2014, leaving the Overstrand Municipality with a saving of R1 356 400 on the original budgeted amount.

Some Voëlklip residents are very upset about this decision.

James Thom from Voëlklip says he has had baboons in his kitchen twice last week and chased them off his property and roof four times in the past week. “What will the municipality’s reaction be when someone is badly injured, or worse, killed by them? I have witnessed their aggression.”

Another Voëlklip resident says the municipality has failed to complete the Voëlklip electric fencing.

“There are now baboons in our selected concentrated area. Will the municipality now assist us with our roof repairs, telephone line breakages and the general destruction of trees that they leave in their paths? Maybe the fire monitors can add ‘baboon watch’ to their long list of duties.”

Stephen Müller, director infrastructure and planning of the OM says in their current draft budget for 2014/2015 there are no provisions made for the baboon monitoring system. It will be recommended to council during the 2014/2015 budget meeting in May that the programme be discarded.

“According to the constitution, animal control and environment duties are the responsibility of national and provincial government,” he said.

Minister signs new building industry wage rates into law The Minister of Labour has extended the BIBC (Building Industry Bargaining Council - Cape of Good Hope) collective agreement to all employers in the building industry within its area of jurisdiction.

According to the statement released by the BIBC, the collective agreement prescribes the latest wage categories and conditions of employment in the building industry in the Western Cape including the Overstrand Municipality.

The collective agreement also introduced a new labour category (Labourer L2) to alleviate the previous large gap between a labourer and a general worker. Previously a labourer was upgraded to a general worker after working in the industry for a year. The new collec-

tive agreement makes provision for an entry level worker to be upgraded to a Labourer 2 category after 6 months in the Industry at a rate half-way between an entry level employee (Labourer L1) and a general worker.

The statement further reads that building and related contractors (including painters, water proofers, flooring companies, plumbers, joiners, etc.) within the Overstrand Municipality are in breach of the law if they do not comply with the latest BIBC Employment Conditions.

A substantial portion of the budget (54%) will be funded from borrowing over the MTREF with anticipated borrowings of R130 million. The balance will be funded from internally generated funds, a finance lease of R6,7 million and capital grants.

The report points out that the municipality has reached its prudential borrowing limits and as a result there is little scope to substantially increase these borrowing levels over the medium term. The repayment of capital and interest (debt services costs) has increased over the past five years as a result of the implementation of an aggressive capital infrastructure programme. The repayment of capital and interest is still within acceptable norms and consequently the capital budget remains relatively flat over the medium term. ) Copies of the draft budget report can be viewed at all public libraries within the municipality, at the offices of all the area managers and on the municipality’s website www.overstrand.gov.za.

Within the public participation process, special meetings will be held during April in each ward so that ward committee members and residents can ask questions and give their input on the draft budget.

Local artist Jaco Sieberhagen is one of the auction artists at the Overstrand Hospice’s Opportunity Art 3 event on 29 March. He has donated this laser cut mild steel and paint sculpture titled “Remember me”.

Swallows pitch in to support fundraiser Opportunity Art 3, billed as the art event of the year, is poised to fly with more than 450 works of affordable art and 25 investment pieces for sale thanks to a dedicated team of volunteers, many of them swallows from overseas, and generous artists.

Opportunity Art 3, in aid of Overstrand Hospice, will be held on 29 March in the Hermanus Auditorium, where the work, collected over the last three months, will be on auction.

Sharon Small-Smillie, vice-chairperson of Overstrand Hospice, says they are especially grateful to the swallows of Hermanus for their support. “Among them are Sheila OwenSmith, a swallow who has returned to play an active part in the community for many years, including duties in the Hospice Shop.

Sheila has tirelessly hounded artists from all over the Overberg for art since the initial event in 2011, marking around 1 100 paintings to date.”

On auction day guests will be met with a glass of wine kindly donated by swallows Simon and Holly Bellingham Turner, owners of Sumaridge Wine Estate in the Hemel-enAarde Valley. Simon and Holly have also donated a 5F bottle of Sumaridge 2008 Merlot signed by winemaker Gavin Patterson, which will be on auction.

Tina Blick, who has spent 19 years flying into Hermanus from London, supports a charity in Hermanus every year and this year the Overstrand Hospice is her charity of choice.

“Tina has personally catered for the Queen of England and other members of the British Royal family and will be presenting the welcoming snacks and canapés for the auction guests,” says Small-Smillie.

“Jo Carruthers, a first time Argus Cycle Tour entrant, raised R2 000 in a wager with a fellow swallow in aid of Overstrand Hospice and will be sponsoring T-shirts for the floor workers on the night.”

With this united force behind the event, it is bound to be a huge success and one not to be missed.

Manie Bekker groet Manie (gebore Johannes Hermanus) Bekker is Maandag 24 Maart oorlede op die ouderdom van 91.

Manie en sy vrou, Helene, woon reeds 35 jaar in Hermanus ná sy aftrede as sakeman in Johannesburg.

Sy lewe het begin saam met sewe broers en susters op die plaas Knabendale in Somerset-Oos. Dit was nie maklike jare nie, maar was ’n onblusbare put van staaltjies waarmee hy sy kinders (en hul vriende) vir ure lank kon entertain as hy die dag in ’n storievertel bui was.

Chamber offers assistance to businesses Those businesses which missed the first opportunity to participate in the Work & Skills Programme of the Western Cape Government, will get another chance when the next roll-out takes place next week on 3 and 4 April when the Work & Skills team will be visiting Hermanus.

Three members of the Hermanus Business Chamber participated in the first roll-out: Abagold, HIK Abalone farm and Harbour Rock restaurant.

Between them they have received 50 new employees whose monthly stipends are being sponsored by the Western Cape Government to contribute towards a 6 months workplace experience programme.

After the period, it is up to the employers whether they wish to keep the employees or let them go, armed with a certificate and six months learning experience to equip them for their future careers.

The Work and Skills Programme is structured as follows: . 1 Day - Induction and ad-

ministration. . 4 Days - Workplace Readiness and Life Skills training facilitated by a contracted training provider. . 6 month placement at participating hosting companies – linked to contractual agreement and employment opportunity.

Mini-museum for history of the Windsor KERRY VAN RENSBURG A chamber pot from 1880, medical items from the same time and a silver sugar bowl from the early 1900s, are just some of the fascinating items on display in a mini-museum depicting the history of the Windsor Hotel.

The mini-museum was created

by Kayla White, a Grade 4 learner from Hermanus Primary School, as part of a history project.

According to Adri Basson, who teaches history at the school, the Gr 4 children had to do a project on the history of the Greater Hermanus area and could choose any aspect of the local area. The project had to be a display which included pictures, information and objects.

They had six weeks to complete the assignment.

Kayla decided to do her project on the Windsor Hotel, and with help from her mother, Stephanie White, the hunt for information and objects of historical significance began. Blake Albert, GM of the hotel, was able to help with photos, info and some items with a story to tell. The search continued at Romantiques where silver fish knives bearing the original Windsor Hotel engraving were discovered. Albert has since bought them all and restored them to their rightful place at the hotel.

Kayla’s dad, Dean White, made the wooden display unit, and then all the items had to go with Kayla to school as the bulk of the project had to be done in class time.

On Tuesday 18 March, Blake Albert was at Hermanus Primary School to see the finished project, on display in the school passageway along with many others. He congratulated Kayla on a job well done.

Kayla’s project, along with the other history projects – on Hoy’s Koppie, Hawston, fishing in the Old Harbour and an old suitcase full of

fascinating historical bits and pieces called A Journey to the Past – will be put on display in the Old Harbour Museum.

Before this happens, the children have to present an oral on their display. Jeanette du Toit, owner of Jadee Media, will film the projects and create digital mini-documentaries, which will be shown on a flat screen TV at the Photo Museum, loaded onto YouTube and on the Hermanus Online website. Kayla’s project will then be put on display in the Windsor Hotel.

Invitation to History Society AGM All interested residents and visitors are invited to attend the Hermanus History Society AGM on Thursday 27 March at 16:00 at the Whale Room, Windsor Hotel.

The short business meeting will be followed by an audio-visual presentation on the economic history of Hermanus, by Dr. Robin Lee and Angela Heslop.

The Hermanus History Society (HHS) has been in operation since May 2012 and has over 90 members who in the past year have had the opportunity to experience several presentations and a variety of site meetings. Among these have been a visit to the Greek Church in Onrus, the display of a Long Street streetscape and viewing the film Hans die Skipper.

Members have participated in the piloting of two new historical walks (Hoy’s Koppie and Historic Hermanus) to be launched on 17 April. One of the society’s 13 projects is an ongoing commitment to FynArts, which this year will take the form of two presentations of an audio-visual on The History of The Marine Hotel.

Paul Steyn (artikel op bl. 20) se positiewe houding laat ’n mens skaamkry dat jy gedurig oor alles kla.

Hy het sy been op 13-jarige ouderdom verloor. ’n Ouderdom net voor die moeilike tienerjare begin. Net voor hoërskool.

Menige in sy posisie sou net bly lê het. Hy kon nie meer aan sport deelneem nie en moes gewoond raak aan ’n nuwe kunsbeen.

Hy moes baie pret-aktiwiteite misloop wat tieners geniet.

Tydens sy skoolloopbaan moes dié dapper jong man selfs in ’n kinderhuis tuisgaan toe probleme by sy ouerhuis hand uitruk.

Hy was ook in pleegsorg by ’n “nuwe familie”.

So hy het daar baie uitdagings oor sy pad gekom, maar Steyn het hom nie laat onderkry nie. Vandag loop hy die land plat om ander in sy posisie te help met fondsinsameling.

En hy kan nie ophou glimlag nie. Hy is “dankbaar” vir alles in sy lewe sodat hy vandag ander mense kan help en inspireer.

As ons vanaand gaan slaap moet ons dalk al ons seëninge begin tel en vir ’n slag dankbaar wees.

HUGE WAVES: The big wave surfers around South Africa positioned themselves in the key world class big wave spots on Thursday 20 March in anticipation of the arriving huge swell, namely Dungeons, at the local spot Bayview. At sunrise on Thursday Her­ manus’s big wave duo, Gideon Malherbe and Rikus Muller, launched their jetski at the New Harbour and headed out to Bayview. They were not disappointed. For three hours they towed each other into some 25 feet+ waves. In the afternoon the weather cleared up, the sea was less bumpy, the swell got even bigger and this time they pad­ dled out without the jetski, joined by JJ Visagie and surfed until sunset. Op 7 Maart het ek my driejarige dogter na Alex Grant Apteek geneem, omdat haar bors half toegetrek was en sy gesukkel het om asem te haal. Ronel Meyer het toe dadelik na haar omgesien en die vermoede was kroep.

Ek is aangeraai om haar na ’n pediater te neem vir ’n kortisoonpompie.

Sy het ook vir ons medisyne gegee en ek is aangesê om my dogter terug te bring as haar bors weer toetrek.

Ons het letterlik net by die huis stilgehou toe ons weer Alex Grant toe jaag.

Daar aangekom, is sy met ’n nebuliser (stuifsproeier) behandel. Ons is huis toe en my dogtertjie was weer rustig en haar borsie oop.

Om 13:00 het ons vertrek na ’n werkfunksie en ek het my dogter saamgevat omdat ek bekommerd was oor haar toestand.

Ná ’n halfuur het my dogter weer swaar asemgehaal en ons is terug apteek toe, waar Ronel haar weer met die nebuliser behandel het. Hulle het ook die ambulans gebel.

Binne minute was die ambulans daar.

Was dit nie vir Ronel se vinnige optrede nie, was my kind vandag nie hier nie. Dankie, Ronel, jy het my kind se lewe gered.

To mall or not to mall, that is the question Every student of Sociology knows that retail concentration spreads out in concentric circles from city centres as cities grow.

This spreads outwards as urbanisation spreads with the increase in population, following customers’ buying power, and meeting their needs, which eventually leads to the city centre CBDs losing lustre and slowly dying. The reason is a simple marketing principle: “Fish where the fish are” (go to where your customers are; don’t expect them to come to you, in a modern competitive environment). This is known as consumer sovereignty.

As the cities grow, they eventually develop their own suburban retail CBDs. It is a phenomenon which occurs in all major cities of the world. The only way to revitalise dying CBDs is to turn them into tourist traps by maintaining the charm of the old city, thereby creating nostalgia of the past, in quaint small shops representative of the old village, combined with a high degree of personal service.

This is the essence of niche marketing.

Let’s look at the Hermanus situation in this context. The focus of the CBD has shifted to the east (Checkers) and the west (Gateway centre). The old CBD is dying – look at the number of businesses that go broke

and the insidious invasion of small time traders.

The Chamber members in the CBD need to look at where their markets are, and their needs.

The focus is shifting west, and the most logical place to establish a modern shopping mall is in Sandbaai. Why? Sandbaai is exactly in the middle of Greater Hermanus. Voëlklip to Fisherhaven. It is the biggest suburb with the most permanent residents; it is conveniently placed for Onrus, Mount Pleasant Glen Fruin and Zwelihle. It makes shops more accessible to customers from Vermont, the Hemel and Aarde Valley, Chanteclaire, Leopard Rock, Malanshoff, Hawston and Fisherhaven.

This is a large pool of viable consumers with massive monthly spending power.

Therefore any retailer worth his salt will open his business in Sandbaai rather than in the old CBD simply because this is where the majority of full-time residents are.

The essential truth is there is no suitable ground or parking in the CBD to accommodate large potential retailers like Game, Dions, Macro, Hyperama, Incredible Connection, Queens Park, Music Moods, Wordsworth, Exclusive Books, Dischem, Weatherleys etc, so they will never be able

to come to Hermanus, unless it has a mall.

Also, there is a place for Nandos, McDonalds, Mugg and Bean, The Fish Market, Starbucks and movie houses, none of which are in our CBD – which means that if we need their services, we need to drive “oor die Berg”.

It is extremely selfish of a small clique of business people who probably all have homes on the east side of Hermanus to deprive the people west of Swartdam Road because they are scared of competition. My advice is, get off your butts and turn the CBD into an “Olde World” Hermanus fishing village, with restaurants, museums, art galleries, live theatre, night clubs, curio shops, etc, and use our unique selling point of whale watching and a revitalised CBD to offer tourists a unique ongoing experience when they come to Hermanus.

Why not do some market research and ask the residents west of Swartdam Road if they would like a mall in Sandbaai and get factual data, instead of the opinion of, and being dictated to by, a few affected members of the Business Chamber. Remember there are Business Chamber members this side of town as well. And we are all part of Hermanus.

Those responsible for collateral damage if mall is delayed should be brought to justice Hermanus Times’s reportage on the meetings (re Retail Africa’s proposed mall in Sandbaai) made short thrift of opposing viewpoints to the anti-mall Hermanus Business Chamber.

While the majority of letters and smsses are in favour (of the mall) Mr Hendricks insists with certain fallacies.

There is no mystery and conspiracy – it is time certain incontrovertible facts, not speculation and horror stories, are aired.

Fact one is that five years have passed since the plans were first placed in the public domain for comment and objections. Repeatedly, the public were invited and the neighbouring erven were given opportunity to register as Interested and Affected Parties (lAPs). Objections by the municipality and lAPs were mostly accommodated, in revised plans. For example, an entry point was moved and along the entire border adjoining housing, 2 m landscaped berms will be planted to mitigate sound and visual impact. Fine noise-reducing tar will be used in the adjoining parking lanes, amongst other refinements which were put into amended final plans.

Appeals at this stage only concern the environmental approval as none of the environmental issues are challenged, but the law allows a tiny gap where the “social desirability”

is concerned and this is where the business chamber suddenly gets involved at this late stage. They do not represent even a fraction of business, but their appeal will delay the mall for all.

Fact two is that floods, due to the concentration of storm water from above the new highway, are concentrated under the “new” R43 and into the future mall space. This has already caused massive damage to more than one hundred properties in Bergzicht, Tambali, Inn Afrika and even Monte Maré, from June through to September last year.

It is estimated that the combined damage exceeded R9 million in insurance claims. A claim against Retail Africa for flood damages resulted in attorneys’ correspondence. The developer then appointed an engineering firm whose findings echo that of particular owners. The municipality also came to examine the problem and assisted by digging emergency trenches. These water deluges would, in terms of Retail Africa’s plans, be diverted into storm water drainage and retention ponds.

The rains have started and we are now anxiously awaiting winter, wishing the earth works and storm water drains would have started. We will certainly again suffer the deluge of undirected water this winter. Should

we institute a class action case for our damages against those responsible for the delay?

Fact three is that the Overstrand Municipality has, after an exhaustive process (where were these shrill appellants then?) approved the Hawston and Sandbaai Malls. If this new and unrepresentative body, the Hermanus Business Chamber, goes to court over this, they should inevitably join, as co- defendant, the Overstrand Municipality, which would in turn drag in all rate payers, to pay the legal fees of the municipality.

Thus, I think these individuals of the business chamber who filed the appeal, must put their monies where their mouths are and accept personal financial responsibility for the legal costs of the municipality, if their appeal fails, as we believe it will. Why? Because they are certainly NOT representing the people of Zwelihle, Sandbaai, Onrus, Vermont or Hemel-en-Aarde Estate, the unemployed, the retired, the consumer, and the vast majority of business who either welcome the mall or are simply indifferent to it. It would actually be a great thing to shake up the heavy rental costs in parts of the CBD.

The Rate Payers Association of Sandbaai is for the mall and their committee endorsed this letter. The past two weeks our informal polls amongst residents have determined 60% in favour of the mall, about 35% indifferent and some 5% opposed.

What about the Hawston Mall – why is there not the same animosity by the business chamber against this one? Ma’ Hawston skrik vi niks! Go Hawston!

The upgrading of Bergzicht Street and the improvement of traffic flow is another benefit we are anxiously awaiting. The infestation of Port Jackson and weeds already serve as cover for criminal activities such as copper wire stripping. We believe the strong possibility of collateral damage to adjoining properties due to any further delay to build this mall must be seriously considered by the municipality, the business chamber and Retail Africa. ID card blues March is my birthday month, so I decided to apply for the new card ID. I arrived at Home Affairs in Wynberg at 11:30, only to be told to “come back tomorrow…..early”.

I spoke to a manager, explaining that I had driven in from Hermanus, but he said his ID card machines could only do 100 cards per day, and over 250 hopefuls were still waiting.

Remember, you then have to return at a later stage to collect your ID card, and will

again have to sit in the “whole-day” queue.

So, my advice is threefold: 1. See that you arrive at Home Affairs before 07:00 and wait until they open, 2. Make do with your old ID book, or 3. Wait until the Caledon office has the card machines (according to the manager: seven years).

“If you intend leaving the roundabout at any subsequent exit, you must signal left in good time before reaching that exit.

Once you have signalled left, you must leave the traffic circle at the next exit.”

Please, Ronnie, before wanting to re-invent the wheel, make sure of your facts and

remember there is absolutely no right turn in a traffic circle, even though that may make your blood boil and you would call these drivers useless.

Rules are rules (no polite flicking of indicators) and lastly, what exactly do you want the traffic department to apprehend offenders of your rules for?

You are considered to be in the circle until you indicate your exit.

Small town mercy that is not available in cities If one ignores for the moment the natural beauty which makes living in Hermanus so enjoyable, there is still so much that makes small town living attractive and satisfying for most of us.

One aspect was brought home to me recently when our 14-year-old cat was ailing. When we struggled to get him to take the required pills, Dr Mark Robey of Main Road Vet responded to our request for an injection instead by arriving at our office on his bicycle

not long afterwards, to inject our pet where he lay sleeping in his favourite chair.

Try getting that service in a city!

Although all treatment was eventually in vain, the experience of this and the further display of care and compassion by Dr Mark has added another YES to our tickbox sheet of small-town life.

Maar dit was so hittete of die erge neerslae het die Overstrand aangedoen. Gisteroggend toe Ladismith byna wegspoel, het ons maar 5 mm op die dorp gemeet. Wat Woensdagnag gebeur het moet ons nog wag om te hoor.

Die vraag is wat wag nou vorentoe vir ons?

Dit is duidelik dat die herfsweer in ’n voorwinterse aard wil ingaan met die oostewind wat telkens die wolke wegkeer. Ons het hom in die volgende paar dae weer met ons om die oormatige nat weer te striem. Hy kom Vrydagoggend elfuur op die toneel om die wolke terug te druk en teen twee namiddag skyn die son voluit.

Die oos swaai egter te ver suid en beland in die suidoos se kake wat die wolke weer oor die Overberg terug druk.

Dit word ’n tweestryd. Saterdag wanneer Hermanus sy deure vir naweek besoekers oopmaak,

R43, this needs to be addressed urgently by Provincial Government, by decreasing the current speed limit of 100 km p/h well before the Fisherhaven turnoff to 80 km p/h (as is the case before the Hawston turnoff) and signs put up to warn motorists of the horses.

This is common practice (and common sense) in similar situations world-wide. I have suggested this repeatedly at numerous BREF (BREAC) meetings for years now.

The feral horses are a valuable, unique feature of the Bot River Estuary and if we are to protect them, we should admire them from a distance and leave them be… unless they are being attacked by local vicious dogs!

Combined effort saves the day for robbed citizen On Monday 17 March I was physically attacked in Celebration Street as I was entering my computer expert, Mr Walter Esterhuizen’s premises to deliver my brand new laptop, which I had bought from his firm a week earlier, to have additional information added.

My assailant was a well-dressed young man. He hit me and grabbed my laptop and ran. I am 80 years old and could not attempt to run after him but ran inside and reported it to Mrs Esterhuizen, who immediately started reporting it to all the security agencies.

I jumped into my car and drove towards Swartdam Road but saw

nobody. I went back to the scene of the crime to find all the security firms present in their vehicles: Safe Security, HPP, ADT – and Mr Esterhuizen, who had come in from his work that he was installing.

I was told to report to the police, which I then did. I was very well received by the Hermanus SAPS and they immediately opened a case and took down a statement from me.

I had just completed my statement when I received a call to say that Mr Esterhuizen had apprehended the culprit along the way to Hermanus, who then had dropped the computer and his jacket and ran away.

I was amazed and overjoyed as all my information was on the new computer. The case is still on and I hope they apprehend the culprit.

Sixty-five tough, committed and determined Lighthouse 2 Lighthouse ladies marched victoriously to the finish line at Grotto beach on Sunday afternoon after completing their four-day charity walk.

Despite many sore feet and aching legs, there was a festive atmosphere at Grotto beach as the ladies were welcomed back by family members, friends, the mayor and jubilant staff and learners from Hermanus Waldorf School.

Over a period of four days the ladies walked from the lighthouse in Cape Agulhas to the lighthouse at Danger Point, a journey of approximately 100 km. They were then transported by bus to Grotto East, where they walked the last stretch to the finish line.

Balloons and watermelon were waiting for them.

Learners from Waldorf, the beneficiaries of this year’s ninth charity walk, presented exuberant and highly entertaining song items. The ladies were then treated to a warm welcome at Dutchies.

Rene Grater, who has done the L2L walk every year, (nine years in a row) looked fresh and energetic when she reached the finish line at Grotto beach on Sunday afternoon. have walked every year since the inception of what has become a major charity initiative over the years.

Each woman that participates in the walk has to raise a certain amount of money and more often than not they raise far more than the minimum amount required.

René says they had a fantastic group of women this year with hardly any moaners, and there was a good atmosphere for the duration of the walk. A function at La Vierge is planned for 9 April when the cheques will be handed over to the beneficiaries.

The Hermanus Waldorf learners and Marimba band entertained the L2L ladies and their friends and families, be­ fore they enjoyed a welcome­back treat at Dutchies.

STANFORD FAIR: The village of Stanford showed off its flair for a fair over the long weekend by showcasing the many delights offered by small­town life. The three­day fair included jazz soirees, an art auction, champagne breakfast and Saturday market featuring local arts and crafts, food stalls, and wine and beer tasting. New blood sought for hospital Friends KERRY VAN RENSBURG Does our organisation still have a meaningful role to play or have circumstances changed and rendered it superfluous?

This was the question put to the floor by Angela Heslop, chairperson of the Friends of Hermaus Hospital (FHH), at the organisation’s annual general meeting on 20 March.

During her presentation of the annual report and an overview of what the FHH has achieved in the past 14 years, Heslop said: “The hospital is now spanking new and there have been some changes in volunteer functions. We need to consider our present status and the way forward”.

In her report Heslop said: “This past year, there has been less fundraising. However we have increased our publicity for the organisation and the hospital.

“The expansion of the hospital opened in 2013 with the additional renovation of the old buildings.

“Bed numbers have increased to 70 and the hospital now also has a much bigger Emergency Centre (casualty), reception, administration, paediatric unit, maternity, pharmacy, outpatients and a second operating theatre.

“Overall, volunteer hours have been steadily decreasing as a number of in-house volunteering activities have discontinued as a result of changes in management and provincial policies.”

“We have lost about 14 volunteers, but there are still three volunteers in the XRay department and two in housekeeping.”

JENNY JACKSON’S GALLERY 19: After spending many holidays in Hermanus, Jenny Jackson moved here permanently 12 years ago and says she is currently experiencing the best years of her life. Always a “late de­ veloper”, Jenny only started painting when she was in her late sixties. Her first solo exhibition was hosted at the Rossouw Modern in Septem­ ber 2012 and her delightful gal­ lery attached to her home/studio in High Street opened in Decem­ ber last year. This restored fisher­ man’s cottage is filled with light and reflects Jenny’s boundless en­ ergy and delight in her work.

Her unique technique of using a palette knife to apply thick strokes of paint to canvas en­ courages a kind of alchemy with­ in the paint, and her works are rounded off with finer touches of charcoal. Her paintings reflect the atmosphere, mood and energy of her subject matter, which ranges from flowers to still lives and portraits.

WILLIE BOTHA SCULPTURE GALLERY: Willie Botha Sculpture Gallery opened its doors in June 2013 at 171 Main road in Hermanus to form part of the Hermanus Art Amble. This follows the international trend to have con­ centrated areas in cities and towns dedicated to the visual arts where art lovers could cas­ ually stroll from gallery to gallery. People al­ so like to see the artists in action or at least meet the artists whose work they are buying.

That is why Willie Botha decided to use part of his gallery to work on smaller pieces where the public can learn more about the sculpting, as well as the bronze casting process.

They also pro­ mote the work of fellow artists and painters and are busy building up a remarkable collection for art investors. New work from Willie Botha and paintings by Pie­ ter Vermaak will be exhibited in the gallery during the Hermanus FynArts Festival which runs from 6 to 16 June.

WALKER BAY ART GALLERY: Francois and Christine Grob­ belaar are the dynamic couple who run this gallery person­ ally and have managed to bring a wonder­ ful variety of artistic mediums to the public.

Paintings, sculptures, ceramics and glass­ works by both the most well established and “up and coming” South African artists are all beautifully represented. Since its inception in 2007, the gallery houses one of the coun­ try’s finest collections of 20th century and contemporary South African art pieces.

Walker Bay Gallery is located at 167 Main Road in a beautifully historic, traditional Overberg­style building. They have also add­ ed The Courtyard Café at the back of the building. LIZE VAN DER WALT: Local artist Lize van der Walt who has captured the im­ agination of the art world with her sea­ scapes of Hermanus beaches, has just finished her sixth and final session of chemotherapy for breast cancer. She is elated because that means she can be­ gin to paint again. Radiotherapy awaits the whole of April but at the moment she is hard at work creating new paint­ ings for her solo exhibition in June which will form part of FynArts. Bellini Gallery, situated in Village Square on the upper level, will be showcasing the exhibition, titled simply ‘Lize!’. LEMBU GALLERY & STUDIO: Lembu Gallery is the home studio of artist Ed Bredenkamp, most well known for his dramatic and vivid red elephants. During FynArts, Lembu will stage an exhibition entitled ‘Portrayals’ which will feature the work of both Ed and Elsie Macdonald, the Knysna based surrealist artist, a few of whose beautiful and whimsi­ cal paintings are currently on show in the gallery. Lembu has also just unveiled a new collection of hand crafted, hand painted glassware from talented glass artists Ronel Basson and Janette Anderson. Each piece of glass is individually hand painted before be­ ing fused and slumped in a high tempera­ ture kiln. It’s a slow and me­ ticulous proc­ ess and each item’s unique.

A new range of jewellery has also re­ cently been released featuring fiery red corals and daz­ zling black and green agates.

A large group of learners from Hawston Primary School participated in the Walk 4 Water in­ itiative, hosted by WCC on Human Rights Day on Friday.

Walking 4 Water a success The weather could not have been better on Human Rights Day when Whale Coast Conservation (WCC) and their many supporters Walked for Water.

“Our thanks go to all who came to give meaning to the day – the schools, members of the public, families and friends – at least 160 were counted,” says Anina Lee, WCC communications manager.

“The walk reminded us that 1 in 7 people in the world don’t have easy access to clean water and sanitation.”

She says first prize goes to Julius Swart, principal of Hawston Primary, who came with a whole bus load of enthusiastic walkers, and in many cases, runners. They were joined by other WCC Eco-Schools youngsters from Zwelihle Primary, Hermanus Private Pre and Primary School, Curro Hermanus, Bosko Christian School and Hermanus Primary.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

This project sets out to develop a Coastal Management Programme (CMP) for the Overberg district. The purpose of a municipal CMP is to function, within the municipal jurisdiction, as a planning and policy instrument to enhance the utilisation of coastal resources and to allow governmental and non-governmental organisations to target their investment in the coastal region to support sustainable coastal development. It aims to achieve a balance between the conservation of the natural, historic, cultural and aesthetic values of the coastal region with the need for economic development and growth. A municipal CMP must contain objectives and strategies that assist in the achievement of the national and provincial coastal management objectives.

Entire coastal zone of the Overberg district from the Rooi Els river in the west to the Breede river in the east.

Section 48 of the Integrated Coastal Management Act mandates each coastal municipality to prepare and adopt a municipal coastal management programme for managing the coastal zone or specific parts of the coastal zone within the municipality.

The coastal management programme for the Overberg district must allow for an integrated, coordinated and uniform approach to coastal management in the district by including: • Avision for the management of the coastal zone • Coastal management objectives • Priorities and strategies for achieving these objectives, as well as performance indicators to measure progress.

Farmer needs land to rent for his animals A small scale farmer in Hawston is in need of land to raise his animals in a safe environment.

Howard Matinka has been farming with pigs, cattle, sheep, chickens and geese for more than two years. However, he has no land of his own to run his business successfully and he says the animals roam around in nearby bushes/forest. This he says, gets him into

trouble with law enforcement.

Matinka says he is prepared to rent a piece of land to keep his animals on and once he has this land, he will be able to apply for financial assistance.

Contracts for SASSA Medical Assessments

The Western Cape Department of Health: Overberg District needs to provide medical assessment services for the purpose of grant applications, such as disability grant, care dependency grant and grant-in-aid, where medical assessments are required.

This is a call to Medical Officers who would be willing to provide a medical assessment service and enter into a contract with the Department of Health: Overberg District. The service will need to be rendered within the Health facilities of the Department of Health: Overberg.

The contracted Medical Officer(s) will be remunerated at a rate of R116 per applicant for the period of this contract. This is an all-inclusive rate of all subsequent services rendered (eg person to do observations, equipment for assessment, occupational therapy service, etc) as per guidelines in order to perform a comprehensive assessment on an applicant for a disability or care dependency grant. A maximum of 40 medical assessments per 8-hour day are recommended.

The cost of transport could be claimed for kilometres travelled after the first 40km, at a max engine capacity of 2000cc.

The service provider will be contracted for the financial year 2014/2015, with effect from 1 April 2014 to 31 March 2015.

Hulle het op 8 Maart met die vuurpyl-projek, gemaak van 2 F plastiekbottels, begin.

“In die verlede was daar projekte wat die kinders ’n blootstelling aan die wetenskap gegee het, soos die magnetiese versneller wat die meisies help bou het, wat ons dan ook Saterdag vir hulle gedemonstreer het,” sê BC. “Daar word verskeie ander projekte in die vooruitsig gestel, wat op ’n meer elektroniese vlak lê, of ander wat met sonkrag te doen het, en selfs ’n Tesla-turbine.”

BC sê behalwe vir kinders van die vallei, was daar kinders van Sandbaai, en selfs van

anderkant De Bosdam. “Die kinders se entoesiasme was so aansteeklik soos bulletjie-rugby, en die groter ‘kinders’ (tot 77 jaar) het dit net so geniet,” sê BC. “Sommige het voorbereid gekom, met ’n sak vol bottels. Met ’n keuse van spuitstukke (nozzles) het hulle self vuurpyle gebou, en selfs vinne uitgesny om die bottels te stuur.

Al was ’n lanseerbasis beskikbaar, was hulle heeltemal te haastig, en het meer dikwels die bottels sommer uit die hand uit geloods, totdat almal papnat gespuit was. Die bottels het meestal na ’n paar meter in die lug in, enige rigting behalwe op boontoe gekies. Maar daar was darem ’n paar suksesvolle vuurpyllanserings. Van die seuns is met pryse weg in die vorm van ’n handvol spuitstukke en hout om hulle eie lanseerbasis te gaan bou.

Dié het hulle Maandagaand alreeds klaar reg gehad.”

Die area ter sprake oorskry 10ha. Hierdie kusdorp is ongeveer 120km vanaf Kaapstad geleë.

Die doel van die “RFQ” is om die belangstelling van finansieël gesonde en omgewingsverantwoordelike ontwikkelaars met bewese kundigheid en 'n gepaste rekord te toets met betrekking tot hul aptyt om met die Munisipaliteit 'n langtermyn huurkontrak aan te gaan vir die ontwikkeling, bestuur, bedryf en onderhoud van 'n publieke oord wat in die behoeftes van die breër publiek, insluitende toeristegroepe en kommersiële belange sal voorsien deur die beskikbaarstelling van onder andere akkommodasie en konferensiefasiliteite. Die Munisipaliteit het ten doel om 'n kortlys van kwalifiserende ontwikkelaars op te stel aan wie 'n omvattende Versoek vir Voorstel uitgereik sal word om ontwikkelingsvoorstelle in te dien.

This coastal town is situated approximately 120 km from Cape Town.

The aim of the RFQ is to test the market appetite of financially sound and environmentally sensitive developers with the necessary expertise and a proven track record to enter into a long term lease with the Municipality to establish, manage, operate and maintain a public resort that caters for the needs of the broader public including tourists groups and commercial interests through the availability of accommodation and conference facilities, amongst others. Oud en jonk het Vrydag aan ’n modeparade deelgeneem.

Jubelland vier 20 jaar Groot pret en plesier het geheers tydens die naweek van 1 Maart met die 20-jarige bestaansviering van die Jubelland Kleuterskool in Stanford.

Die skool is in Februarie 1994 deur Ellen Dickson met tien kinders begin en het honderde kinders oor die afgelope jare deur hulle deure laat gaan.

Die feesvieringe Vrydagaand by die Door of Hope is begin met ’n modeparade. Daar was verskillende kategorieë waaraan oud en jonk kon deelneem.

Saterdagoggend was die wenners van die modeparade voor in die ry tydens ’n parade in die strate van Stanford tot by die skooltjie. Daar was verskillende aktiwiteite soos springkastele, wa-

terglybane en ook ander programme wat in die groot tent aangebied is. Besoekers het potjiekos, koek en koeldrank gedurende die dag geniet.

Die verrigtinge is Sondagoggend afgesluit met ’n dankseggingsdiens deur pastoor Clive Jacks van die Restoration Centre in Kaapstad.

Die bestuur bedank Coke, Pick n Pay, Overstrand-munisipaliteit en die Grootbos Football Foundation. Alle huidige en gewese ouers word ook bedank.

Aan al die manne van die kerk wat die tent help opslaan het en ook vir die braai en potjiekos wat hulle voorberei het, asook die personeel vir hulle bystand, ’n groot dankie.

The two Duramax engines are ranked amongst the most powerful and fuel efficient diesel engines available in their respective displacement classes. Both feature double overhead camshafts and an aluminium cylinder head designed to optimise combustion for enhanced power and efficiency with a reduced tendency for engine knock

to occur. Both engines make use of high-pressure common-rail fuel injection systems (2.0 bar) with turbocharged and intercooled induction systems.

The clean-burn design of the induction and combustion process, aside from the power and efficiency benefits, also provides for low emissions. Both engines are Euro 2 compliant.

The tried-and-trusted 3.6 F petrol V6 engine fitted to the range-topping Trailblazer 3.6 LTZ AT model remains unchanged.

The all-new Chevrolet Trailblazer, which is built in Thailand for global consumption, embodies those specific attributes since global introduction in 2012.

GS 450h SE / 350 Representing a complete rethink of an executive sedan with far greater emphasis on driving dynamics, while retaining Lexus’s standards of interior opulence and overall build quality, the new GS has found favour with critics the world over. With a wider track, more direct steering, aurally engineered exhaust system, an automatic gearbox with paddle shifters and virtual immediate lock-up technology, vented disc brakes and generous use of aluminium, the new GS is a dynamic revelation.

In true Lexus style the GS offers an unmatched list of luxury features as standard.

The GS 350 offers features such as an intelligent climate control system, Lexus Premium Sound, electrically adjustable front seats and steering wheel and full high-grade leather trim. But the big news for 2014 is the adoption of the LFA-inspired 8-speed, Sport Direct Shift (SPDS) auto box from the Lexus IS F. In addition, due to customer demand, the GS 350 will, for the first time in South Africa, be made available with the F-SPORT body kit package.

The list of extras has also just grown a bit bigger on the GS 450h models, thanks to the inclusion of full-colour heads-up display as standard. Equipped with a similar V6 petrol engine to the one on the GS 350, the 450h offers 345 Nm of torque; it is tuned for a maximum delivery of 213 kW. This is further complemented by a powerful electric motor and high voltage battery to boost total system output to 252 kW. The electric motor also adds a further 275 Nm for impressive response. The drivetrain is coupled with an E-CVT continuously variable gearbox.

RX 350 EX In 2012, the popular RX range received the new Lexus corporate identity and signature spindle grille. For 2014, the RX has been refreshed even further with a new Appearance Pack that is now standard on the RX 350 EX model.

This pack comprises a re-designed bumper with larger air intakes to boost the muscularity of the front view.

Other changes include new 19-inch alloys (as opposed to the 18-inch units on the outgoing model), as well as LED-type front fog lamps.

For the RX 450h SE, the latest upgrade includes the LED interior lighting package as well as the adoption of the Integrated Sport Driving system which enables the driver to tune the Drive Mode Select to Eco, Normal or Sport settings.

GWM M4 – Affordable crossover attitude QUICKPIC Following a very positive reception at last year’s Johannesburg International Motorshow (JIMS), GWM’s M4 compact crossover has now officially gone on sale in South Africa. The M4 has been such a smash-hit sales success in China, that it has been nick-named the GWM “Speed”, as a result of its quick sales.

“The M4 is a ground-breaking vehicle for us, and actually creates an entirely new sub-niche in the crossover segment,” said GWM South Africa COO Warren Olsen. “It is smaller than vehicles such as the Ford EcoSport and Renault Duster, but offers more standard features and a very attractive sticker price. On the other hand it is also more obviously SUV-themed than cross-hatches such as our own C20R and the VW Vivo Maxx, so in effect it slots in between these two segments.”

Undoubtedly one of the M4’s main attractions, this crossover’s cheeky looks are certain to generate lots of talk and turn many heads. It is a very compact vehicle, with an overall length of less than four metres, but with an SUV-rivalling ground clearance of more than 180 mm and stylish 16-inch alloy wheels, it certainly packs lots of attitude into those compact dimensions.

Considering the M4’s high-value pricing, the design detailing will come as a surprise. The squared-off front-end features a gaping lower airdam flanked by fog lamps. Skidplates in a contrasting silver hue are fitted front and rear and black clad-

The M4 is offered in South Africa in a choice of six vibey colours; Fashion Orange, Titanium White, Sky Silver, Pearl Black, Jazz Red and Ocean Blue.

The style and modern design continues inside, where the M4 boasts a sporty instrument cluster with overlapping dials and an integrated digital speedometer display. The facia design features a V-shaped centre section with neatly separated control interfaces for the audio (in-

cluding a large digital screen) and ventilation systems. Vertically slanted ventilation outlets are located either side of the centre hangdown section. Neat black cloth upholstery and the use of silver trim accents on the facia and doors create an upmarket ambience.

The M4 is more compact than other small crossovers, yet it remains a practical daily driver, with good levels of head-, shoulder- and legroom all-round. The boot measures a claimed 310 F, and a spare wheel is located under its floor. The rear seat is split 60:40 and can fold down to increase cargo space. As a direct consequence of the compact exterior dimensions and elevated ride height, visibility out of the M4 is ex-

cellent. Further boosting inner-city manoeuvrability is hydraulically assisted power steering.

As customers have come to expect from GWM, the M4 boasts a comprehensive standard features count, including air-conditioning, electric windows/mirrors and an audio system with USB and auxiliarly plug-in support as well as Bluetooth capability. Driver comfort is further boosted by the fitment of a rake-adjustable steering wheel. Rear park assist helps drivers avoid those expensive parking scrapes.

The M4 is powered by GWM’s trusty 1,5 F VVT-i engine that delivers 71,3 kW at 6 000 rpm and 138 Nm of torque to the front wheels via a slick five-speed manual transmis-

sion. The engine features variable valve timing, benefiting not only performance but also fuel economy.

The M4 sips fuel at the rate of 7,2 F/100 km (combined cycle), translating to a CO2 emissions figure of 172 g/km. A top speed of 170 km/h is claimed.

As is the case with all GWM vehicles, the M4 has been designed to meet global safety standards and boasts a comprehensive safety package. Dual front airbags and disc brakes all-round backed by ABS with EBD are fitted. Isofix child-seat mountings are mounted at the rear and the front seatbelts are heightadjustable. The rear doors also feature child locks.

Fog lights front and rear boost visibility in poor weather conditions while security is provided by a standard immobiliser, with the further convenience of remote central locking.

“The M4 is bound to appeal to a younger audience that places individuality, striking design and connectivity high on the priority list,” says brand manager, Hannes Oosthuizen. “At the price, there is simply nothing out there to match the cheekiness of the M4, but it is more than just a pretty face, too. The standard features list is comprehensive, as is the overall value package, courtesy of a 5 year/100 000 km warranty and 5 year/45 000 km service plan,” he adds.

The M4 is available through GWM’s dealership network, currently boasting more than 70 outlets and service centres. GWM M4 1,5 VVT-i R189 999. The price includes a 5-years/45 000 km service plan.

CHRISSIE VAN WYK The first roll of the new bowling year for the Hermanus Bowling Club took place on Thursday 20 March.

It was then followed by the monthly Thursday Thriller members competition sponsored by Hyundai, which turned out to be a real bowls battle between the various teams.

FISH FOR SUPPER: Al­ wyn Lieben­ berg, also winemaker for The Goose Wines (Retief Goos­ en), is a keen fisherman and hauled out this two­tone fingerfin butterfish, weighing in at 1,51 kg and 45 cm, caught with a “wonderwurm” in Hardebaai, Onrus.

His wife Beulah sent in this photo and says he is a persistent fisherman and often goes fishing in the night and in the rain. “He has even been out on the rocks when it hailed last year, leaving me a nervous wreck at home. These butterfish are rarely caught and the of­ ficial SA record is 900 gr. It was quite delicious.”

Kleinmond klop Atlantic A W.C.M. GIBSON Atlantic het die afgelope naweek met twee spanne tuis ’n vriendskaplike wedstryd teen Kleinmond gespeel. Die B-span het 15-12 gewen en die A-span met 11-29 verloor.

Die A-span se wedstryd het vinnig afgeskop, met Kleinmond op die aanval. Kleinmond se swaar pak het begin dryf en die eerste met ’n drie en doelskop 7-0 voorgeloop. Herschel Vermaak het die telling met ’n strafskop 3-12 gemaak. Rustydtelling was 6-12.

Ná rustyd het Juandré Steneveld vir Atlantic gaan druk en die telling was 11-12. Kleinmond het hierna nog drie drieë gedruk en met een doelskop geslaag om die eindtelling 11-29 te maak. Die wedstryd was goeie oefening vir die twee spanne.

Hermanus host Pakistan test cricket legends JAN-HENDRIK KOEGELENBERG Sunday was certainly a day to remember as Hermanus Cricket Club played host to the Pakistan National Veterans team. Also being Pakistan’s National Day on Sunday, it was fitting that the guests walked away as the victors.

A few months ago Mahmood Malik, owner of Tikka Palace restaurant in Village Square and a new sports equipment shop which is opening soon in the Carriages centre, contacted the cricket club to arrange the match. Malik is a huge cricket fanatic who used his international cricket connections to invite the Pakistan veterans team to SA and accompany them on their tour.

Before the match in Hermanus on Sunday, the visitors faced the Protea veterans team at Boland Park in Paarl on 19 March and again at Newlands on 21 March, which was a day/ night game. The results of their three matches: 1 win, 1 loss and 1 draw.

Not to disappoint our guests, they were greeted on arrival in Hermanus by over 30 children from Riviersonderend who were treated to some valuable coaching tips by the national team.

The Pakistan XI won the toss and elected to field first. It was a very good toss to win as they claimed veteran Liston Davidowitz’s wicket the very first ball. It was down to Derek Brand and John du Plessis to put on a total.

The skipper Mark Brumer unselfishly put himself down the order to give the other players a chance to bat. He however got stranded at the non-striker’s end and Hermanus were bowled out for 134 runs in 25 overs with Wasim Yousafi claiming 4 wickets. He certainly entertained the crowd with the famous “Boom Boom Afridi” celebration after claiming a

wicket; in fact Yousafi was Pakistan’s national wicketkeeper years back, so the wickets he took made him very happy. After lunch the Pakistan innings commenced.

With an ex-international opening pair that started the innings, things started very disruptively for the home side, as the visitors batted at more than a run a ball.

At drinks break, Mayor Nicolette BothaGuthrie joined the special occasion and was invited to meet all the players as well as the children who were part of the day. Both teams then exchanged gifts.

Soon after the drinks break, things got really messy for Hermanus as the Pakistan team showed off their skills with the bat. Sajid Ali, aged 50, smashed four consecutive 6s and scored a very quick 68 runs before retiring to give the other batters a chance. Sajid Ali also played 14 ODIs for Pakistan and scored over 16 000 first-class runs. The youngest member being Saleem Elahi who still played test cricket for Pakistan up until four years ago, and the oldest being the captain Mr Qureshi aged 68, who opened the bowling.

With all the players having played either provincial or test cricket at some stage, it was clear that they were still playing some form of competitive cricket. The Pakistan veterans smashed the winning runs in the 20th over, losing only three wickets.

Over-all cricket was definitely the winner as new friends were made and for the children who attended, it was a day they certainly will never forget. A future ICC Elite panel umpire and ex-provincial player Ghaffar Kazmi also gave them some coaching tips on bowling, batting and fielding drills. The Pakistan team also gave a signed cricket bat to the children.

The Pakistani Veterans loved Hermanus and the surrounding area and spent two days enjoying what the town has to offer.

As the players and management staff of the Pakistani veterans team descended from their tourbus on Sunday, they were welcomed to the Hermanus Cricket Club by children from Riviersonderend, supported by Heinrich Sauls. Heinrich started a programme to edu­ cate children with sport and also to keep them off the streets. Hermanus Cricket Club invited them for a day filled with activities and cricket coaching by some of the players.

Dit was ’n heerlike warm dag en die munisipale amptenare het uit hul pad gegaan om die fasiliteite baie mooi gereed te maak vir die geleentheid. Die Witspan het die gala gewen met 264 punte. Die Groenspan was kort op hul hakke met 251 punte gevolg deur die Blouspan. Die dag het twee nuwe rekords opgelewer.

Thys van der Merwe het die seuns o.15 50 m­vryslag­rekord verbeter (32:87), terwyl Nelrine Beyers (heel regs) die meisies o.17­19 50 m­vryslag­rekord (34:37) verbeter het.
