BYPASS PROPOSED ALONG FAIRWAYS AVENUE: PUBLIC PARTICIPATION IN DECEMBER
Bypass back on the cards JANHENDRIK COETZER The investigation process of the proposed Hermanus bypass road is underway, and the formal EIA (Environmental Impact Assessment) is starting with an SRK Consulting public open day meeting on 8 December at Hermanus High School to discuss the project
Discussions are expected to last well into 2015. After former MEC of the Department of Transport and Public Works, Robin Carlisle, in 2012 announced that while he was minister, the bypass road would not be built, the current minister, Donald Grant, however, has a different take on it. According to Grant’s spokesper-
son, Siphesihle Dube, the minister is in support of such a bypass road and its investigation. “I can confirm that minister Grant is in full support of this investigation and that a decision will be made at its conclusion. The construction of a new road will depend on the results of this investigation as well as the availability of funds
for such a project.” Originally a section of the bypass road was planned to run through parts of the Fernkloof Nature Reserve. David Beattie, one of the founding members of the Residents Opposed to the Bypass Road (ROB), the group that was established to oppose a road running through the Fernkloof Nature Reserve, con-
firmed that this will no longer be the case. “We have won that battle after it was announced that the proposed bypass road will not be going through Fernkloof and that the department is looking into other alternatives. So the group doesn’t exist anymore.” ) Article continues on page 5.

Bloody weekend: four murders in just over three hours JANINE VAN DER RIET Between 23:50 on Saturday 22 November and 03:00 on Sunday, four murders were reported in Zwelihle – an unprecedented occurrence, according to the Hermanus Police. All the victims died of stab wounds. According to Warrant Officer Calvin Duncan from the Hermanus Police, in the first incident on Saturday at 23:50, an argument broke out between a man, who is part of a group that patrols Mandela Square in Zwelihle to prevent crime, and a man who came out of a shebeen. “The police had closed the shebeen earlier, after the patrol group reported it to police. The patron of the shebeen stabbed a member of the patrol group with a knife. The patrol
group member died on the scene and the patron bolted. He later fled to Kraaifontein after a group of people from the community went to look for him.” The suspect handed himself over at the Kraaifontein Police Station where he was arrested for murder. In another incident at about 01:15, two men arrived at a house in Zuma Street. According to Duncan, when the homeowner told them to leave, they damaged the door by kicking it and throwing stones at it. The owner took a knife and stabbed both men in an effort to stop them. They fled the scene, but the one man collapsed at the gate of the premises with a stab wound to his chest, while the other man ran to Qhayiya Street, where he collapsed with two stab wounds in his head. He died in the ambulance on the way to hospital. The homeowner was arrested for
murder. In the last incident, a 19-year-old man and his friend walked from Verona’s Tavern and met a group of young men in Landa Street who were preparing to go for initiation. “The one man saw a man he knew in the group and they started to ‘play fight’ with sticks. Another man from the group of young men came and grabbed the stick and started a real fight with the victim. During the fight, the victim and his friend were stabbed after one suspect pulled out a knife,” said Duncan. The 19-year-old died on the scene from a stab wound in the chest while his friend was taken to hospital and treated for a stab wound to his back. Three men, aged between 18 and 20, were arrested for murder. The police are investigating the four murders and the suspects remain in custody.

The eco-friendly Hermanus Community Day Centre (CDC), the new centralised clinic in Swartdam Road, is nearing completion and is expected to open its doors early next year. The R43 million centre was designed and constructed to make optimal use of natural light and air flow to ensure that it will be an environmentally friendly and sustainable building. The Western Cape Health Minister, Theuns Botha, visited the facility recently. “This new facility is yet another addition to the investment that Western Cape Government is making to bring health services closer to the community. “ It is a beautifully constructed health facility, designed in line with world trends. It has open spaces, and enclosed waiting areas. “There are rooms for patients who meet in clubs for their chronic medication, and it is safe and secure. “Now patients don’t have to walk long distances to get access to quality health care.
They have a modern facility close to them.” The CDC will function as the only primary healthcare facility in Hermanus, replacing the current Zwelihle, Mount Pleasant and Hermanus clinics. The close proximity to the Hermanus Hospital will also be advantageous for emergency medical transfers. The current clinics (Zwelihle, Mount Pleasant and Hermanus clinics) will close down in a phased approach, to ensure that the community will always have access to Primary Healthcare services. Staff from the current clinics will be absorbed into the Hermanus CDC along with 14 new staff members and a permanently appointed medical doctor and dentist. The new centre will offer full primary health care, including women’s and children’s health, mental health, infectious diseases, oral care, rehabilitation services, and curative and chronic care. The department will take occupation of the building in December and the necessary equipment will then be installed.

Zero tolerance in holiday season JANINE VAN DER RIET The Overstrand Law Enforcement officials, the police, traffic officers and fire and rescue employees are gearing themselves towards ensuring safety on the beaches and on the roads, and checking first aid kits and fire fighting equipment and trucks to make sure all are in working order in readiness for the thousands of holiday visitors to the Overstrand. The Overstrand Municipality (OM) launched their holiday season operational plan on Monday at the municipal auditorium where all the partners in law enforcement, including members of the Hermanus Magistrate’s Court, attended the launch. Mayor Nicolette Botha-Guthrie said she knows that theirs is sometimes an ungrateful job to do. While everyone relaxes, law enforcers have to work around the clock. “But with-
out your dedication and hard work, chaos will erupt. People will drive drunk, loiter, litter and possible drownings can occur, especially when swimming under the influence.” Neville Michaels, director of protection services, emphasised that the plan can only succeed if there is a good working relationship between the municipality and other role players such as the police, the provincial traffic department, the National Sea Rescue Institute, Marine and Coastal Management, neighbourhood watches, security companies and the Department of Justice and the National Prosecuting Authority. A zero tolerance approach will be adopted. Roadblocks will be a common sight. Law enforcers will concentrate on people drinking in public as this can prevent drownings, violence and other crimes. “We must focus on the petty crimes so that they don’t turn into big crimes,” Michaels said.
Illegal dumping is also something that law enforcers will focus on, as it is a health concern with regard to hazardous materials, and also cost council “an arm and leg to clear these sites”. Michaels also asked the public to try to sort out problems directly with their neighbours, instead of contacting “the men in blue” to fight their battles for them. “Our men have a lot of responsibility. To be called out because a home owner did not first try to speak to his neighbour directly regarding, for instance, a dog barking and being a nuisance, is not acceptable.” He also asked residents and visitors to abide by all the bylaws, including not walking dogs without a leash. “And take a poopscoop along, as you could be fined. Don’t make it miserable for other beach or cliff path users.” The safety of children is a big concern and parents are urged to take care of their chil-
“Vyf bome is vergiftig.
Ons bly so lekker daar.”
BYPASS: ’’preferred alternative to be identified’’ Continued from page 1. According to Al-Ameen Kafaar, Head of Communication at the Provincial Department of Transport and Public Works, they have developed a transport model to test and investigate various alternatives in support of growth and development scenarios provided by the Overstrand Municipality. “As various alternatives are being looked into and the public participation and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process are still ongoing, no decision has been made as yet. The project programme and cost estimate will only be undertaken once a preferred alternative is identified through the EIA process. “Only then can the department give a strategic level indication as to the timelines and cost of implementing the project.” SRK Consulting was appointed in 2012 as an independent environmental assessment practitioner to undertake the environmental process for the project. Since the commencement of the project, this joint venture has undertaken traffic sur-
veys and met with affected parties to define the current traffic problems. According to Sue Reuther, principal environmental consultant at SRK Consulting, there are two types of processes, but that they were still in their early stages. “There are a basic assessment and a full scoping and environmental impact report process. Stakeholder engagement is conducted at various points throughout the EIA process, and all reports produced during this process will be made available for public review and comment before they are submitted to authorities.” Kafaar says that once a regional route, which bypasses the CBD, has been agreed to and accepted, the department has indicated that it will consider handing over proclaimed roads that have no regional significance within the CBD to the Overstrand Municipality. “However, it is still too early in the process to consider these matters now, as no decision regarding an alternate route has been made. A decision is required before such matters can be discussed with the municipality and
On Sunday, clouds of black smoke came from the direction of the Checkers Station Mall. According to a spokesperson from Checkers, the origin of the smoke was from the generator that had kicked in due to the load shedding on Sunday. “The generator had overheated slightly and emitted some smoke, but after it was switched off, and allowed a brief period to cool down, it was working perfectly again.” PHOTO: JACQUES ELS
SAPS communications officer’s vigil leads to arrest The prompt reaction of a communications officer at the Hermanus Police on Thursday led to the arrest of a thief in Sandbaai. Lieutenant Fadila September was driving in Piet Retief Street at around 13:30 when she noticed a suspicious man walking around a house. According to WO Calvin Duncan from the Hermanus Police, she went to investigate. “He told her he was cutting the grass at the premises.” She left the scene, but felt uneasy and turned around to follow up on the person’s alibi, but he was nowhere to be found.
In the meantime, September ascertained that a weed eater had been stolen from the premises where she had last seen him. “After backup arrived, September and the other members patrolled the area of Mount Pleasant and Zwelihle and found the suspect in Kwasa Kwasa. September recovered the stolen weed eater from a person in Zwelihle, who had bought it from the suspect. He was already busy using the weed eater to cut his grass,” said Duncan. A 26-year-old man was arrested on charges of theft and appeared in court.
due process will need to be followed.” The EIA process will run as follows: 1. The department will submit an application for environmental authorisation to the Provincial Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning. 2. On receipt of formal acceptance of the EIA application, the EIA-related public participation process will be formally initiated and opportunities for comment will be provided for the entire length of the EIA process. EIA-related public participation will include meetings as well as the release of reports for public review and comment. 3. All affected and interested stakeholders will be informed of the EIA programme at the start of the formal EIA process, which is anticipated to commence by the end of 2014 and will extend well into 2015. The Department of Transport and Public Works recently held a meeting in Hermanus, and according to some members attending the meeting, ideas were raised on how to relieve the current traffic system in Hermanus. ) See SRK Consulting notice on p 4.

Klein River Cheese, outside Stanford, won two bronze medals at the prestigious 2014 World Cheese Awards. The cheeses that did them proud are their Grana (the crowned SA Dairy Product of the Year) and Oak Smoked Stanford, which was also the winner of the Woolworths Cheese Makers Challenge earlier this year. The World Cheese Awards drew entries from 33 different countries and is the largest competition of its kind in the world with nearly 2 600 cheeses being tasted by over 250 cheese experts in the space of a single day. “We are thrilled with the result,” says an elated Riaan Lourens of Klein River Cheese. “It’s always tough competing on the world stage, but such a great way to measure our cheese alongside others in the global market.” The overall winning cheese at the awards and crowned the 2014 World Champion is a soft blue cheese called Bath Blue from the west of England, manufactured by The Bath Soft Cheese Co.

8 HermanusTimes Launch of Hermanus and Joey van Rhyn Luyt’s story
Nuus News
27 November, 2014
On Wednesday 3 December the Hermanus History Society will launch In Those Days: the story of Joey van Rhyn Luyt at the Marine Hotel. The book contains the memoirs of Joey van Rhyn Luyt (1894–1985), who was one of the most prominent characters in 20th century Hermanus history. She managed the original Marine Hotel, which, together with the Riviera Hotel above Grotto Beach, was owned by her husband, P John Luyt. The Luyt family owned several hotels in Hermanus: the Windsor, the Birkenhead and the Esplanade amongst them. They played a key role in starting and developing the tourist industry, which is today the basis of Hermanus’ economy. In recognition of this fact the launch of the book is being held un-
Joey van Rhyn Luyt (1894–1985) der the auspices of the Hermanus Tourism Bureau and Mayor Nicolette Botha-Guthrie will be the guest speaker. Joey Luyt dictated her story to her daughter Berdine in 1970, and Ber-
though both families opposed the union. Joey then became de facto manager of the Marine until John’s death in 1940 and owner/manager until she sold the hotel in 1947. Themes that fascinate in the book include the following: ) The ingenuity and self-reliance needed to manage a first class hotel in a small fishing village 120 km from the nearest town. ) The constant stream of royal, aristocratic, political, wealthy and famous names and artists, musicians and novelists that flowed through the hotel. Joey identifies over 200 of these by name, and has perceptive stories to tell about many of them. ) The Luyt’s role in promoting tourism to Hermanus and the hotel,
dine produced a typescript of some 200 pages. Copies were distributed to family members, but no further action was taken until, in early 2014, family member Carol Leipold showed the typescript to Dr Robin Lee, secretary of the Hermanus History Society. He immediately realised that it was worthy of publication, and, with the support of the family, edited the text lightly, located illustrations and produced a handsome volume of some 250 pages, with index. Joey was born in the Northern Cape into an affluent and politically influential family, after which the present Vanrhynsdorp is named. She trained as a teacher and in 1915 took a post in the school at Hermanus. Within weeks she met and fell in love with P John Luyt, who was recently widowed and left with four children. They married the same year, al-
using a number of ingenious strategies. They, together with Meester William Paterson, can be credited with starting what we now call “ecotourism” as early as 1923. Hermanus residents will find the book a fascinating addition to their knowledge of their town’s history and visitors will find in it the romantic story of an indomitable character. The launch is at 18.00 for 18.30 at the municipal auditorium. Copies of the book will be on sale at R260.
Fynbos Foundation now owners of property after fundraisers JANINE VAN DER RIET The Fynbos Community Foundation is now the proud new owners of the property on 19 Kleine Street in Stanford after their very successful auction, other fundraisers and a loan. “We would like to thank everybody who contributed to the success of the Hopeland Auction,

Biodiversity Walk, along cliff path, gearing up JANHENDRIK COETZER The informative and educational self-guided Biodiversity Walk, stretching along the cliff path from Fick’s Pool to Gearings Point, is heading for completion. It was hoped that the walk would be completed by 6 December when renowned oceanographer Dr Sylvia Earle will visit Hermanus to declare Walker Bay an official Hope Spot. Despite throwing everything at the project
to make this possible, only some of the information boards will be completed by that date. “The rest of the information boards will be finished probably by mid December. The info boards need to go through several rules and regulations and this takes time,” says David Beattie, chairman of the Hermanus Cliff Path Management Group, who is the driving force behind the project. “The information nodes also need to be built and some of the alien vegetation will only be removed and replaced by indigenous plants
by mid 2015.” The walk is based on the world class Green Point Biodiversity Walk in Cape Town, and will be dotted with info boards on history/fauna/flora and there will be seating areas. “This part of the Cliff Path, between Fick’s Pool and Gearings Point, was the only part of the total 12km Cliff Path stretching from De Mond to the new harbour, not fully rehabilitated. “Luckily it’s easily restored and fortunately the path exists, or we would have been in trou-

The winnings are used to fund a number of projects including the Biodiversity Walk. “Around R70 000 was spent last year on upgrading the existing path between Fick’s Pool and Gearings Point.” Beattie adds that this is one of the most exciting projects he has worked on since being in Hermanus. .

The Hermanus Times is celebrating its 65th anniversary this month, and although none of us in the office have been around that long, the number of years spent individually, as part of the Hermanus Times team, have been quite an amazing journey. Thank you to all our readers for your con tributions: from photos and comments about local news and events to the robust letters page where opinions on a wide variety of issues are expressed every week. Keep on sending us your contributions, because at the end of the day, the Hermanus Times is your newspaper. ) The Hermanus Times supports the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children. On our staff photo on page 11, we are all wearing a white rib bon in support of this drive.
Very happy with hospital’s service
Conservation idea There is a huge amount of “groundbreaking” work being done in the community. To live in this unique and precious area is such an absolute privilege. The beauty and biodiversity of this stunning community is unequalled. We live in the centre of the Cape Floral Kingdom (smallest and most botanically diverse region of the planet) sitting on the edge of a magnificent coastline. The wonder of it boggles the mind. Anyhow, here is just a thought and suggestion that developers and the municipality might consider to put up a sign just a few weeks in advance to inform and invite residents to remove plants for protection and propagation before the heavy equipment moves in to scrape the life away. Thanks to those who might consider the idea.

Whale Coast fm 96 wants to thank the subject advisers and the sponsors of air time for certain subjects, for their cooperation in the on-air matric revision project during October and November. If we have helped one learner, it has been worth while.

I was discharged this morning (21 November 2014) from Ward B (B18), having been admitted on the Monday, and wish to place on record my most sincere thanks to everyone who attended to my needs during that period at the Mediclinic Hermanus. I know that each patient has different needs, but your staff ensured that my stay was most satisfying. It is always difficult to isolate any individual person – so I would like to ensure that everyone involved with B18 (that was me) is thanked. From the porter taking me to X-rays, the cleaning team to ensuring fresh water available and warm liquid refreshments with diabetic “snacks”, beds kept fresh and comfortable to the kitchen staff for those lovely meals and “treats”. I acknowledge and thank you. Finally with a special word of thanks for
your outstanding nursing staff. The team worked well together and often under pressure, but changed my drips regularly, taking temps, BPs, etc., and certainly made my stay at the Mediclinic Hermanus Ward B a pleasure, especially as there was always a willing smile and I loved to tease you all too. Keep it up folks.
ELIZABETH GRAVENOR, SOCIAL SECRETARY, SAARP HERMANUS
Dear Elizabeth We are so pleased that we met your needs while staying in our facility. Thank you for the letter and I will certainly forward this letter to all the staff involved. We wish you all the best. Anne-Marie Nortje Hospital manager, Mediclinic Southern Africa
Teacher achievement award evening On Friday, 21 November, we held a teacher achievement/award evening at the Enlighten Trust. Through the involvement of the Junior Town Council, one of our teachers, Gerhard Coetzee, was nominated for an award as mentor and for his dedication to his students at Northcliff House College. He was but one of several different teachers that Enlighten Trust identified to be recognised for the hard work and effort that is demanded in being a successful teacher. Teachers from Betty’s Bay to Gansbaai and inland were thanked for their achievements in developing art, music, computer programmes, ECD initiatives, Junior Town Council involvement, Maths in foundation phase and generally all-round excellence in teachers.

I believe in angels On Monday night I called 10177. Within minutes, two ambulances arrived at my home. Their occupants were: a Mr Theron and Lana Joubert from Metro, and Clifford and Leandra from EMR. These youngsters are angels - so kind, considerate, friendly and efficient. They saved a man’s life, with no fuss, no bother. Their care and professionalism have amazed many people and for that I say thank you. The next morning, they came to my home again, to check if I was okay … who does that nowadays? Please people, when you see ambulance personnel, stop, buy them a coke on a hot day, nod your head and acknowledge them. They are angels.

The opening address by Alan Powell was inspiring and added to the wonderful atmosphere that was already a buzz. The WCED was represented by Wendy Colyn and Ryk Rhomburg. Principals, administrators and staff filled the hall and cheered their fellow colleagues on. It was heart-warming for us in the profession, to be motivated and feel excited by the positive energy of those nominated. Enlighten’s staff were full of praise and support and have developed a support structure that all in the Overberg region should take advantage of and partner with. Magriet Peter is a hardworking and devoted captain of a well oiled ship. Congratulations to all.

I am an amateur family historian who lives in Kent in England. I have been researching the life and times of my great-grandfather, the Rev Canon FFMS Thornton, who was the Honorary Canon of Ely Cathedral (1890-1938)...but I’ve hit a problem that I hope one of your readers might be able to solve. One of the canon’s sons was Gerard Ferdinand Thornton - he married, in 1914, a lady called Valerie Zinia Hermine Burrow. Unhappily, the marriage ended in 1934 and Valerie, aged 45, married Archibald Keith MacLaren, aged 36, the following year in Kensington, London. Archibald was a Major with the Seaforth Highlanders in World War Two and, I believe, the director of the Curzon House Club in Mayfair. It seems they emigrated to South Africa circa 1949 - I can find no mention of either over here. However, I have stumbled across a death notice in The Times on 29 December 1984 which says that Major MacLaren died at his Hermanus home the previous day...and that he was the husband of Frances! The questions I am left asking are: a) did Valerie die before Archibald remarried; b) did they divorce and, if so, when and; c) is there anyone out there who knew Archibald, Valerie or, indeed, Frances? Incidentally, Archibald’s father was the rather colourful England cricket captain between 1898-1909 who had enjoyed a somewhat extravagant lifestyle, and apparently lost rather large sums of money. He went on to become a journalist, a wine expert and even a film extra. If anyone can supply any clues, I can be contacted at robin.thornton@btinternet.com Many thanks!

Recycle Swop Shop needs help surviving The Recycle Swop Shop (RSS) volunteers’ end of year function was held on Saturday 23 November. It consisted of a walk along the cliff path from Fick’s Pool to the Marine pool, picking up garbage strewn along the way. This was followed by a swim in Marine pool under the watchful eye of lifesaver Angelo from See-en-Sand and a picnic consisting of fish and chips, courtesy of JP Seafoods, fruit, ice cream and cooldrinks. Volunteers can be anyone from white ladies to an energetic 7 year old boy from Zwelihle who helps with moving shelves and cleaning up, to mostly pre-teens, 11 to 14 years old. The young girls teach the kids from 3 to 6 years old how to count their points and choose items from the shop, and the pre-teen boys then do the final sorting in five categories of plastic, tins and glass. Walker Bay Recycling pays them for sorting the recyclables, more
than for the recyclables itself. The RSS was the brainchild of Early Childhood Development expert, Marilyn van der Velden, who studied in Canada. She has many years experience, amongst others, teaching Cree Indians in the north of Canada. The project, a play shop and bank where children collect recyclables in exchange for points, teaches children sorting skills and basic numeracy as they earn points that they can either use or bank to buy something more expensive later. It teaches them responsibility and “reward for effort’’. Marilyn was involved in the crèches of Zwelihele 14 years ago, long before other organisations came along. The RSS is a NPO that can only exist through donations from the private sector. Narina Howard, with her wealth of knowledge of crèches, is the current

operations manager to see that the shop functions. Ninkie Matthee, a teacher, is always quietly lending a helping hand. Cynthea is the sole adult volunteer from Zwelihle, but more Xhosaspeaking adults are needed as the RSS serves on average 120 children a week and this number continues to grow. The RSS urgently needs a secretary only to take minutes and send letters. The Waldorf School bus, paid for by the Lighthouse to Lighthouse Ladies walk, provided transport from Zwelihle to town and back. The RSS is currently run from the Hou Moed complex in Zwelihle, that was built from the ruins of the hangers at the old airport by philanthropist Theo de Meyer. It featured in the Country Life Magazine, on radio and on 50/50. The project has won many awards. It has been replicated in 26 other places in South Africa . How to start a RSS - handbook is free to download from the internet. The future of this project is uncertain at the moment as it seems they will have to move early next year. Their new home is still uncertain. There was a public meeting in the Hou Moed Hall last Wednesday and the parents and others attending were very much against moving the shop elsewhere. Let us hope that the RSS can survive here in Hermanus, where the first one started. It may just die here, without support.

The event comprises a gentle meander (or a run, if you are that way inclined) through the vineyards, with teams encouraged to dress in their most outrageous outfits. Congregation saves night shelter JANINE VAN DER RIET Due to a lack of funds, the Hermanus Night Shelter Association was about to close the doors of the temporary shelter at the end of November.
off Swartdam Road to the association. The funds from L2L will go towards financing the building, furniture and equipment. But for now, until the dream of a new shelter in Swartdam Road becomes a reality, the current shelter still needs R8 000 per month to keep going. This includes the salaries of the night supervisors and the rent of the building behind the Hermanus tennis courts. Many residents in and around Hermanus
take turns to supply a hot meal for the homeless people every night of the week. After Abbott’s appeal, he managed to raise around R15 000 on Sunday from generous churchgoers. “We are extremely grateful. Many people also asked for the banking details of the association and we are looking forward to receiving even more donations.” The new night shelter will be able to look after more than eight homeless people.

The shelter would have closed until such time as the new shelter has been built at the end of 2015, leaving at least 12 people homeless during the upcoming Christmas season.
Les Abbott, chairman of the Hermanus Night Shelter Association, made a plea after a church service on Sunday at the United Church, and residents opened their hearts and purses to keep the shelter going for at least another two months. The Hermanus Night Shelter Association was privileged to be nominated as one of beneficiaries of the 2015 Lighthouse to Lighthouse (L2L) fundraising effort. The municipality has agreed to lease land

Support for Shoeboxes Two Christmas Shoebox projects are currently underway in the Hangklip-Kleinmond area to bring cheer amongst the little ones over the festive season. The Hangklip-Kleinmond Tourism Bureau identified three pre-school facilities as beneficiaries of its project, namely Muispaleis, House Madalitsho and Alicia’s Creche, who take care of more than 50 children aged between 3 months and four years at these facilities. Bureau manager Madelaine Coetzee says they aim is to give each of these kids a shoebox. To participate, donors must call the office and choose the name of the child they would like to receive their gift. They can also collect a shoebox from the bureau. This box can be filled with
a small toy, a piece of clothing, personal hygiene items such as a toothbrush, toothpaste, soap and a wash cloth, educational material, such as a set of crayons or clay, and sweets or a treat of your choice. facturer to offer a comfortable air suspension in this segment, giving all drivers noticeably more driving enjoyment.” The new C-Class sets visual highlights with a modern, dynamic design that also exudes sensual purity, arouses emotions and, to top it all off, stages high tech in perfect fashion. Customers can choose from two fronts – with the sports grille or the luxury grille with the MercedesBenz star on the bonnet. the level of a luxury vehicle, it provides a modern, luxurious and at the same time sporty ambience. offers a high level of crash safety. With an aluminium content of 49% and up to 65 kg less gross vehicle weight the Estate is the lightweightconstruction leader in its segment. The powerful and efficient petrol and diesel engines with ECO start/ stop function comply with the Euro 6 emissions standards and ensure sporty performance and driving pleasure. When compared with its predecessor, certain members of the line-up consume in excess of 20% less fuel. The diesel model of the new C-Class Estate is equipped with SCR (selective catalytic reduction) technology. The C-Class Estate range includes two BlueDIRECT four-cylinder pet-
rol engines with power outputs from 115 kW to 135 kW for the C 180 and C 200 respectively and one BlueTEC four-cylinder diesel engine with 150 kW of power for the C 250 BlueTEC. Exemplary suspension comfort and road roar and tyre vibration characteristics coupled with outstanding dynamic vehicle handling – these are the hallmarks of the newly designed suspension of the new C-Class Estate. Thanks to a new four-link front axle it offers driving pleasure and ride comfort at the same time. C-Class Estate customers will have a choice of two versions of the standard-specification steel suspension, which also includes a sporty set-up. As an alternative, MercedesBenz for the first time offers an air suspension in this segment. The AIRMATIC air suspension manages to bridge the gap between a high level of ride comfort and dynamic, agile handling. AIRMATIC also features all-round self-levelling for optimum ride comfort even with the vehicle loaded. All models of the C-Class family will feature an electromechanical Direct-Steer system as standard from now on. This combines speedsensitive servo assistance from the speed-sensitive steering with a steering ratio that varies with the given steering angle. The power steering assistance provided by the rack-and-pinion steering gear is controlled as needed, thereby contributing towards efficiency. As with all Mercedes-Benz passenger cars, the C-Class Estate comes standard with a 6-year/100 000 km Premium Drive maintenance plan, with no customer contribution. Ford redefines the SUV with smart, rugged and refined new Ford Everest QUICKPIC Taking a bold step to redefine the SUV market in Asia Pacific and beyond, Ford today unveiled the new Ford Everest, a technologically advanced, stunningly capable and refined seven-seat SUV that will be launched in 2015. In Asia Pacific, the Ford Everest will be available in nine markets: China, Australia, New Zealand, India, and markets across the ASEAN region. Ford will also introduce the rugged SUV to Sub-Saharan Africa and South Africa in 2015. “The new Ford Everest is an exceptionally versatile vehicle, equally prepared for the everyday commute as it is for the most extreme off-road terrain,” said Dave Schoch, president, Ford Asia Pacific. “The Everest’s unique blend of tough capability and exceptional comfort is going to resonate with drivers across Asia Pacific and around the world.” With a rugged, sculptural design that reflects its unshakeable toughness and technological prowess, the new Ford Everest blends strength, smart features and style to bring consumers a tough and versatile SUV with true off-road capability. In addition to surprising and delighting fans of rugged off-road SUVs, the new Ford Everest embodies Ford’s fun-to-drive DNA to deliver rewarding and dynamic on-road handling, offering no compromises on refinement and comfort. Led by Ford’s Asia Pacific design and product development teams, and making use of Ford’s global SUV expertise, the new Ford Everest builds on the reputation of the current Ford Everest, which is praised for its durability and versatility. The new Ford Everest will be available in both rear-wheel drive and fourwheel drive variants depending on specific market demand. The new Ford Everest was designed from the ground up with the durability to take on the most inhospitable environments. One of the toughest SUVs in its segment, the Ford Everest has a true body-on-frame design, assuring the torsional strength required for challenging terrains. Together with an intelligent four-wheel drive system, an active transfer case with Torque on Demand, Terrain Management System, and best-in-class ground clearance of 225 mm and water-wading capability of 800 mm, the Ford Everest helps drivers navigate difficult terrain with ease. For ultimate capability, the advanced Terrain Management System gives drivers four preset settings – Normal, Snow/Gravel/ Grass, Sand and Rock– that alter the vehicle’s throttle response, transmission, intelligent four-wheel drive system and traction control to confidently tackle any situation. For extreme off-road environments, drivers can manually lock the transfer case in low-range four-wheel drive mode for increased control. These impressive off-road credentials are paired to a new level of ride quality and dynamic handling beyond what consumers have come to expect in a rugged SUV. Thanks to its coil spring front and rear suspension and a Watt’s linkage on the rear axle, the new Ford Everest provides a comfortable, stable ride with agile and predictable handling on the road, keeping the promise of Ford’s fun-todrive DNA. Ingeniously packaged with “up for it” functionality enabling extraordinary journeys, the new Ford Everest is one of the most technologically advanced off-road SUVs ever made, and builds on Ford’s global expertise in the utility segment. The latest generation of Ford’s in-car connectivity solution, SYNC 2, lets drivers use natural voice commands to control the car’s entertainment system, climate controls and connected mobile devices more easily than ever before. SYNC 2 also boasts an 8-inch touchscreen with color-coded corners for easy menu navigation. The new Ford Everest also offers a number of segment-first technologies, including Curve Control, designed to help drivers maintain control when approaching turns too quickly; Lane Departure Warning and Lane Keeping Aid, two technologies that help prevent drivers from unintentionally drifting out of a lane; and Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) with Cross Traffic Alert, which in-
The incredible capabilities of the new Ford Everest are made possible by one of three petrol and diesel engines, mated to durable and effi cient sixspeed automatic or manual transmissions. PHOTO: QUICKPIC forms drivers when there is a vehicle in their blind spot while driving or when preparing to reverse out of parking spots. The vehicle also offers other advanced features, including Adaptive Cruise Control, Forward Alert with Collision Mitigation, Roll Stability Control and an Electronic Stability Program that works with traction control to help the driver stay in control. To reduce parking anxiety, Active Park Assist enables drivers to parallel park hands-free, requiring only accelerating, shifting and braking from the driver. In addition to advanced active safety systems, a strong passenger cage built using high-strength materials like boron steel, and passive safety features, including seven airbags, help to keep occupants safe in the event of a collision. The incredible capabilities of the new Ford Everest are made possible by one of three petrol and diesel engines, mated to durable and efficient six-speed automatic or manual transmissions. While availability differs across markets, all three engines deliver uncompromised power and torque with excellent fuel efficiency: •A new 2.0-liter four-cylinder twin-scroll EcoBoost petrol engine will debut in Asia Pacific in the Ford Everest, offering excellent torque, power and refinement combined with projected best-in-class fuel economy and carbon dioxide emissions •For maximum power and torque for heavyduty towing, Ford is offering the latest generation of its globally proven 3.2-liter Duratorq five-cylinder TDCi diesel engine, with upgrades including an updated exhaust gas recirculation system to boost efficiency •For maximum fuel economy without compromising performance, Ford is also offering the latest generation of the 2.2-liter Duratorq four-cylinder TDCi diesel The new Ford Everest stands apart with a bold, sculptural design that communicates its impressive capabilities and advanced smart features, while the robust front end with signature LED daytime running lights and wide stance make for a powerful presence on the road. The chiseled and technical design is also highly efficient – extensive aerodynamic testing led to an exterior that seamlessly melds form and function. The new Ford Everest’s bold exterior presence is paired with a modern interior that makes use of refined materials and emphasises horizontal lines to create a comfortable, harmonious environment for up to seven adult occupants. Interior features balance ride comfort with ultimate practicality, in-
cluding a large moon roof, a convenient powered liftgate, more than 30 cleverly designed stowage spaces, multiple power outlets in the first and second rows, and flexible seating and cargo arrangements – including fold-flat second- and third-row seating – to achieve a perfect balance between passenger demands and packing efficiency. To ensure exceptional cabin quietness, Ford equipped the new Ford Everest with Active Noise Cancellation technology in addition to optimising cabin sealing and sound absorbing materials throughout the vehicle. Similar to the systems used in noise-cancelling headphones, Active Noise Cancellation uses three strategically placed microphones
inside the cabin to detect and measure sounds. A smart control module instantaneously generates opposing sound waves, which are then fed through the Everest’s audio system to cancel out unpleasant noises. The result is a quiet interior that lets the driver comfortably speak with third row passengers without shouting. The new Ford Everest will be manufactured at AutoAlliance Thailand in Rayong, Thailand, for ASEAN markets. In China, the new Ford Everest will be manufactured by Ford’s Jiangling Motors Corp (JMC) joint venture at the JMC Xiaolan Plant in Nanchang, China, and distributed through JMC’s Ford-brand network of dealers.

Toyota Hilux SRX 2.5 Xtra Cab: Raised body QUICKPIC Toyota raises the bar with the new Raised Body Hilux 2.5 D-4D SRX Xtra Cab Few companies have the kind of clout in the pick-up world that Hilux wields, especially when we’re talking workhorse models. So after pulling out all the stops with the bellsand-whistles Legend 45 package, which now becomes standard fare on top-end Hilux models, Toyota turns its attention to the more utilitarian side of things with a thorough re-work (pun intended) of the Hilux 2.5 D-4D SRX. On sale now, a new Raised Body version of the Hilux 2.5 D-4D SRX Xtra Cab replaces the previous low body version. In response to custom-
Cab has only increased marginally. The new retail selling price of R298 700 is a mere R5 000 premium over the outgoing model. Key specs: •2.5 D-4D 4-cylinder, 16-valve DOHC diesel engine mated to a fivespeed manual box •75 kW @ 3600 rpm •260 Nm @ 1600-2400 rpm •Mud guards – front & rear •Air conditioner •Audio system with Bluetooth & RDS •Steering switches •Electric windows •Power steering; •USB outlet •Centre console box •Anti-theft system – siren/alarm & immobiliser; •Dual front airbags •ABS •5-year / 90 000 km service plan
er demand, this new Xtra Cab addresses the need for increased ride height and ground clearance, as well as improved approach and departure angles to tackle challenging terrain. Heavy duty 16” steel wheels complement the raised body suspension to maximise rough road performance. In addition, the specification of the Raised Body version has been aligned to other SRX models, matching the utilitarian nature of the vehicle and creating consistency across the product line-up. In line with its hard core aesthetics the newcomer is ‘de-chromed’ and gets practical black cladding for the door handles and outer mirrors. The good news is the price – despite an overall last quarter price increase, the new Hilux 2.5 D-4D Xtra

With the holiday season fast approaching, families will soon start preparing for those long drives ahead. “Keeping the kids safe and entertained is an important part of the trip,” says Les Mc Master, chairman of the Motor Industry Workshop Association (MIWA). He says it is essential when travelling with young children to ensure that car seats are properly secured. Statistics show that up to 70% of car seats are incorrectly installed. Parents must also ensure that the seat is the ageappropriate size and kids who are big enough to use the normal seat belts are buckled in at all times. “Children, especially toddlers, get fidgety when sitting still for more than two hours. It is important to stop at regular intervals to give everyone a chance to stretch their legs and refuel for the next leg. Try to pick pit-stops with fun activities for children such as jungle gyms. This gives kids a chance to work off some energy without distracting mom or dad while they drive!” Making sure the car is in tip top condition ahead of the drive also needs to be a priority. Mc Master recommends looking out for preholiday safety check specials often offered by workshops ahead of the holiday season.
“Don’t leave the service until the last minute as you may need new parts that need to be ordered and could take a few days.” He also reminds drivers that every car should contain a breakdown kit with a flashlight in the event of an accident or breakdown after dark, and a fully charged phone for communication during emergencies. Dealing with bored and grumpy children on a road trip can be challenging, so Mc Master offers these helpful tips for happy, safe journeys: • Pack snacks in the car to reduce the amount of hours wasted at often crowded roadside restaurants along the way. Juice boxes, cereal bars and the South African favourite, biltong, are always a good idea for hungry little people. • Pack lots of water to prevent dehydration, and wet-wipes to clean sticky hands and spills. • Revisit the traditional car games of 21 Questions, Eye Spy and or Numberplate Cricket. • If these don’t appeal, smartphones and tablets are loaded with games to appeal to a range of ages, and with the increase in educational games, could even teach your child a new skill by the time you reach your destination. • Audio-books are also a great idea. Make sure to pick something that appeals to the whole family.

NATURE MATTERS: Did you know.... The Cape blad derwort or “Kaapse blasie blom” (Utricularia bisquamata) is a small carnivorous plant that grows in damp soil. It has tiny underground bladders that capture small aquatic organisms like pro tozoa. The bladders can at tain a partial vacuum. When prey organisms swim past, they trigger the sudden opening of the bladder trap door and water, together with the prey, is sucked into the bladder. The trap door then springs shut, trapping the prey in side. PHOTO: SARRACENIA.COM
