Dit wil gedoen wees,” voeg sy by.

) Doringagtige plante is aangeplant. ) Wetstoepassing is opgeskerp.

Stingrays spotted A massive stingray was spotted at the new harbour the past weekend. According to Boet Scheun from BS Divers, based in the new harbour, they are quite common to the area. “We are a bit like Struisbaai where they are seen a lot more, but our water is murky and they

tend to stay at the bottom of the harbour, which is quite deep. We have spotted a few but they are not particularly dangerous.” According to Deon Geldenhuys, deputy station commander of the NSRI Station 17, they have never injured anyone in the area as far as he knows.

The Barefoot Cook Good news for Hermanus food lovers is that The Barefoot Cook in Aberdeen Street is re opening. Owner and chef, Mariclaire took a well earned sabbatical from the rigours of running a busy restaurant. After a safari in Botswana and a hiking holiday in the Fish River Canyon, Namibia, Mariclaire is now raring to go for the busy season ahead. Mariclaire opened the restaurant in 2006 after extensive experience working in restaurants as far afield as The Netherlands and the Caribbean. The Barefoot Cook quickly became a favourite with the local residents and visitors alike. The delightful courtyard setting and eclectic furnishings offers a haven of tranquility, whilst the food has garnered consistent praise from the loyal clientele. Such is the positive feedback, the restaurant has been placed in the top 10% of restaurants worldwide by Trip Advisor. The Bistro style menu is designed to provide delicious, freshly prepared and seasonally inspired food, with Mariclaires' passion for sauces being a highlight. Evening dining offers equally sumptuous dishes in a relaxed and inviting environment. Mariclaire will gladly organise private functions at the restaurant and design

Many questions were raised after the article “Property owners now charged for using fire brigade’s services” was published in the Hermanus Times on 21 August. Council had made the decision that, as of 1 July, property owners will be charged for fire brigade call-outs on structural, veld and other fires. In addition, a fee will be charged for the issuing of certificates for flammable substances as well as inspections (third and thereafter) conducted in terms of fire safety. The income will be used for fire services rendered to the community. Coenie Groenewald, municipal manager of the Overstrand Municipality, answered a few questions. Why the decision to charge for a service which used to be free? Due to constant development, new technology and legal responsibility the Overstrand Municipality had to implement tariffs for the provision of fire services. Breakdown of the various fees: ) Extinguishing of fires Extinguishing of structural (all buildings) fires per hour per incident: R1 500. Extinguishing of structural (all buildings) fires per hour per incident for indigent households: Free.

Extinguishing of veld and other fires per hour: R500. Assistance at motor vehicle accidents and rescues: Free. ) Standby at fire scene Per hour for vehicle and firefighters: R500. ) Fire prevention inspections Tank installation – per tank: R300. LP Gas – per installation 48 kg and more including bulk tanks: R300. ) Fire safety 1st and 2nd compliance inspection: Free. 3rd and continuing compliance inspection: R300. ) Events Inspection of location and issuing of population certificate: R200. Standby at event per event for vehicle and firefighters: R1 000. ) Burn permits Burn permit inspection: R250. Who will be held accountable if a fire starts in an open field? Each fire will be investigated to determine who is liable. If arson is suspected, a criminal case will be opened. An investigation will be conducted to determine who is responsible. If such an open field fire spreads to neighbouring homes, will each home owner be held accountable? The owner on whose property the fire started will be held responsible. Other owners of properties affected by the fire will not be held liable.

TOP WINE: Wildekrans Wine Estate in Bot River was selected as one of the top ten contenders for their Wildekrans Pinotage Barrel Select Reserve 2012 at the 2014 Absa Top 10 Competi tion that was hosted at Landtscap in Stellenbosch re cently. From left are: William Wilkinson (winemaker), Amanda Harlow (owner) and Braam Gericke (viticulturist). Wilkinson said this wine was hand harvested, destalked and cold soaked overnight. It was then aged in new French oak for 24 months. It is a rich, complex though fresh, cool climate Pinotage with great structure and depth. Gericke said all the hard work is now paying dividends and it’s great to re ceive such rewards after five years of continuous hard work.

Rick and Braam take on Africa on their bikes ELBÉ VAN HEERDEN Rick Oosthuyzen from Tapas and Braam van der Walt from Hermanus Backpackers undertook their adventure, with hardly any planning, except that they wanted to bike all the way to Lake Malawi and back. The two mounted their motorcycles, a BMW 1200 GS and Yamaha 1200 Tenere respectively and hit the road in July. Their trip started in Hermanus, from where they made their way through Kimberley to the Botswana border, travelling through Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe, before returning home. “We had three weeks in which to complete the trip,” says Rick. “We met so many interesting people along the way. There was this one South African, a guy Braam had met 20 years ago, who had emigrated to Malawi where he runs a lodge. He used to be a heroin addict and was taken in by a black couple. There he went cold turkey while they nursed him back to health.” According to Rick it was wonderful to experience the differences between the countries. “Botswana was incredibly efficient, friendly and the backpackers were clean and organised. Zambia was much poorer and not as westernised as the other countries we saw.” Travelling with food as part of a motorbike journey is rather difficult, so the duo took their chances along the way. “There are no Wimpys to be found, so we would buy boiled eggs for breakfast from street vendors. Another favourite was potatoes or sweet potatoes fried in goat’s fat.” The weather played along beautifully and

Petrol was one of the major issues Rick Oost huyzen and Braam van der Walt faced on their trip. Either very expensive, or not avail able at all. Braam took this photo of Rick at a petrol station in a small town near Lusaka, Zambia. they managed to cover around 500 km per day in temperatures which reached 26°C at times. In total they covered 8 300 km, and spent a week on the shores of Lake Malawi. “Coming back into South Africa, we hit a huge cold front and stayed over in Burgersdorp where it was so cold the water pipes froze solid overnight. The cold weather was quite a shock to the system after the tropical weather we had experienced.” Rick says the whole trip was very different compared to a similar trip he undertook through the United States last year. “There were motels and diners all along the way. On this trip it was much more difficult to find a place to stop, eat and stay. “It was especially difficult to get petrol. We would stop in a village with half a tank and ask whether we could get petrol in the next town,” says Braam. “But then we’d arrive there, with hardly any petrol left and realise that they are sold out. Braam undertook a biking trip through Africa with some friends 20 years ago, and says this time round the trip was much easier “with more money in your pocket and riding a more reliable motorcycle.” Although it was wonderful to retake the trip of his youth, Braam says you don’t really need to cross the border to have an adventure. “We travelled back through all the smaller towns, off the beaten track, around Lesotho to get back home. “All in all, the adventure was amazing, but it is great to be back in South Africa. The scenery is amazing, the roads are paved and the area clean. “And petrol is much cheaper. We had to pay up to R24/l in Malawi,” Braam adds.

Braam van der Walt barters for breakfast, in this case already boiled eggs, along their trip through Africa. Rick and Braam enjoyed some interesting Af rican cuisine on their tour. The delicacies fea tured here are the innards of a goat.

Report highlights burglaries and drug abuse JANINE VAN DER RIET According to the 2013/14 PNP (Policing Needs and Priorities programme) report released, house burglaries top the list of reported crimes in six of the seven police stations in the Hermanus Cluster (stretching from Kleinmond to Gansbaai). And 80% of criminals convicted in the Overstrand are self proclaimed drug users. This report was discussed at a meeting attended by all the chairpersons of Kleinmond, Hermanus, Stanford, Gansbaai, Napier, Bredasdorp and Struisbaai community police forums, as well as police officials, Overstrand Municipality ward councillors, ratepayers associations and members of the public. It was officiated by Dan Plato, minister of community safety in the Western Cape, at the Moffat Hall on Friday. According to Plato, what the department hopes to achieve with the annual EPP (Expand-

ed Partnership Programme), is to determine safety needs and priorities through broad consultation with affected communities, establish systems and/or strengthening existing structures and partnerships such as CPFs and neighbourhood watches. Col Francois De Wet, Hermanus acting station commander and acting cluster commander voiced his concerns about who is protecting the protectors. He referred to incidents that occurred in the Overstrand where police officials lives were endangered and police vehicles and equipment damaged. He added that the Hermanus cluster has an estimated 113 300 residents, with only 338 operational police members and 96 support members. “The challenges we face are firstly insufficient man power and the distance between the police stations. Also perpetrators use minors/children or women to stand in the line of fire when there are riots, which means that our police members cannot protect ourselves. We cannot fight back, and risk hurting innocent children.” Other problems contributing to crime in the Overstrand area include poaching and gang activities, misuse of drugs, suspended sentences for criminals, no street lights, fynbos areas and overgrown cliff paths. De Wet said 80% of criminals convicted in the Overstrand are self proclaimed drug users. The top three crimes at the seven police

stations in the Hermanus cluster are: ) Bredasdorp: Assault, substance abuse and house burglary. ) Gansbaai: House burglary, theft and domestic violence. ) Hermanus: Theft, house robbery and robbery. ) Kleinmond: House burglary, theft out of motor vehicles, domestic violence. ) Napier: House burglary, substance abuse and robbery. ) Stanford: Theft of copper, common theft and substance abuse. ) Struisbaai: Assault, theft and house burglary.

Hennie Westraat, Hermanus CPF chairperson said residents must have more respect for the police that put their own safety at risk while doing their jobs. PHOTO: JANINE VAN DER RIET To assist with further identifying policing needs and priorities, participants were asked for input by way of answering a questionnaire. Questions included service levels at police stations, response time after a crime is reported, victime support, councelling services, police resources in terms of vehicles and manpower. Plato will use this information to help the formulation of policing priorities at provincial and national level.

FOTO’S: OLIVIA DICKSON

Pick n Pay now falls under corporate management JANHENDRIK COETZER Pick n Pay Hermanus has been taken over by Pick n Pay Head Office after the previous owner, Rohann Maree, decided to sell the franchise after managing the store for the past year. Maree took over from Noël Basson, who had sold the franchise after deciding to retire from retail. The official take over by Pick n Pay head office management kicked in on 18 August, and they appointed Wayne Castle as the new manager. Castle has been working for Pick n Pay for the past 17 years and has been involved with various franchises during this time. Castle is still settling in but says “Hermanus is a lovely town, filled with warm and friendly people. It is vibrant and diverse with many tour-

ists passing through over weekends.” Although early days he says they have already introduced new product lines and some exciting innovations when it comes to displays. Some refurbishments are also planned to make the store even more attractive to customers, confirmed Abdurahman Hamdulay, Pick n Pay’s general manager. Castle says he is looking forward to getting to know the Hermanus community and is excited to experience the upcoming Whale Festival and summer holidays. “I really hope that this move is a more permanent one for me. Store management does change from time to time, however I look forward to serving the community now and in the future.” Castle will be joined by his wife and kids, who are still in Cape Town, at the end of the year.

HT Paste and win winners announced JANINE VAN DER RIET Two lucky Hermanus Times readers each won a meat hamper worth R500 (from Van Blommestein Butchery) in the newspaper’s paste and win competition, which ran for the past six weeks. Both winners have never won a prize before, so they were extremely excited when they were contacted. The first lucky winner, Charmaine Lombard from Sandbaai, says they moved from Fourways in Johannesburg to Sandbaai four years ago to retire and they love the area. She is especially excited about her grand prize as she loves the smoked gammon and also the wide selection of sausages from Van Blommestein Butchery. Vernon Butler from Fisherhaven, the second winner in the competition, was also very happy when lady luck smiled on him. He jokingly told Lombard that they must have been the only two entrants in the competition, because they have won. Thanks to Van Blommestein Butchery once again for their meat hamper prizes.

As part of a series on local charity shops, Hermanus Times spoke to Sylvana Doran, the committee member in charge of the Hermanus Animal Welfare Society (HAWS) shop. The shop is situated next to the Rotary Anns in Mitchell Street. How long have you been in operation? The shop was first opened in the 1970s in Long Street in one of the small cottages behind Pick n Pay. The cottage was damp and dark and the ladies referred to it as “The Black Hole of Calcutta”. When Cyril Schaeffer was at the helm of our society, he approached the municipality for more suitable premises. They offered us the piece of land in Mitchell Street where we built our present shop. What does the course of your day look like? Sandra Corbett, the shop manager, starts her day at 08:00 and cleans and sorts before the shop opens to the public at 09:00. There are about 20 volunteers who all offer their services free of charge. Sandra receives all the goods that are donated to us and sorts and prices all the items which are then displayed in the shop. We also have a former librarian volunteer who is in charge of the books. Hettie Roux ensures that the books are categorised and correctly priced. During the holidays our books

sell very well when the tourists come to buy something to read while on vacation. What is the strangest item you have received? Some years ago we were given a set of false teeth to sell. We were not at all sure how to price this item, so when we got a prospective buyer, we asked for a donation and lo and behold we received a very generous donation! Who is your clientele? Most of our clients are local people who love coming in to see what bargains they can find. Holiday makers and “the swallows” are frequent shoppers when they’re in Hermanus. What are your most popular items? Clothing sells exceptionally well. We can always do with more nick knacks and cooking utensils. Where does the money go to? All monies raised go to our kennels in Steenbras Street where we have up to 60 dogs and another 40 or so cats, all looking for homes. We also treat sick and abused animals who are brought to our clinic. We subsidise the fees of our indigent residents whose animals are brought to us. Do you collect? If anyone has goods to donate to us, we will gladly collect them. You can telephone us at the shop on 028 312 1800 or at the kennels on 028 312 1281.

Youths throw rocks on coastal path

Nogmaals my opregte dank en waardering.

Dit

Who watches over the whale watchers? I followed the recent debate in the Hermanus Times regarding boat-based whale-watching with interest and in broad terms agree with the opinion that, provided the proper regulations are observed, the whale-watching boats should not have any negative impact on the whales, their behaviour or their numbers visiting Walker Bay each year. I have spent many years watching and approaching wild animals by vehicle – both as a safari guide and a frequent visitor to wild places – and my experience is that animals very quickly become habituated to the presence of vehicles, provided the approach is done slowly, the animals are always allowed to move away if they want to and are never harassed or chased. I am sure that the whale watching operators in Hermanus follow these logical, well-known procedures. My concern is that twice in the last few weeks I have spoken to tourists who have had bad experiences on a whale-watching boat. The first instance involved a family from the Middle East. They were with two very young children – perhaps four and six years old. (I wonder, is it appropriate for children of this age to be allowed on a whale-watching boat under any circumstances?). The weather on the day in question was poor; it was raining and it was windy. During the trip the sea became so rough the passengers were all instructed to go into the cabin for their own safety. By now the children were feeling sick and terrified and the boat was rocking wildly.

Descending to the cabin down a slippery staircase, the father very nearly lost his grip on his son. There were not enough seats in the cabin for all the passengers, many of whom were sea-sick. To make matters worse there were no seasick bags and the two children both ending up vomiting on themselves, their parents and the floor of the cabin. At no stage did any member of the crew come into the cabin to make sure the passengers were comfortable. Last week I spoke to a group of twelve Italians who had been out that morning on a whale-watching trip. Their English was not good so I did not get all the details but they made it clear they had also had a bad experience. Again the weather had been wild, wet and windy. On the outward journey the waves were huge and most of the passengers were frightened and sick. They were shown two whales but by that time they were all beyond caring. Moby Dick could have been doing cartwheels across the ocean, no-one would have been in the least interested. On Thursday last week one of the operators cancelled their nine o’clock departure because they felt sea conditions were not good. At precisely the same time, another operator went out with a fully-laden boat. I understand completely the financial pressure on the boat operators; they need to maximise their revenues during the relatively short whale season but this financial pressure should never override the safety and well-be-

I am a permanent resident of Vermont. Last Saturday (23 August) at about 15:00, I was taking a walk from Vermont to Onrus along the coastal path which runs outside the edge of the camping fence. I decided to sit for a while on the second last bench and enjoy the view, when all of a sudden I heard a loud bang. It was a large piece of rock thrown at the fence right behind where I was sitting. I stood up, startled, turned round and could only see dense bush to the one side behind the fence. Suddenly I heard loud laughter and three young (about thirteen years old) boys ran out, shrieking, and throwing pieces of rock at the fence and myself. Some even came over the fence. With much laughter they then took off on their bicycles into the camping terrain. I find it bad enough to be pelted and bombarded with rock pieces. As a senior (I am 81 years old) I have to walk with a stick. I find this kind of behaviour by young boys a sign of contempt for an elderly person. (These youngsters are known by the lady gate warden and should be reprimanded.)

Surely there needs to be an independent authority (perhaps the Harbour Master?) who makes the decision each day about whether sea conditions are appropriate and safe for the boats to go out. And beyond the issue of safety, the boat operators have a responsibility to their passengers. I also hope that someone in authority is checking that the boats are not going out with more than the stipulated number of passengers. I hasten to add that the vast majority of tourists I speak to who have been on whalewatching trips have had wonderful experiences – even with the operator in question. (In fact most tourists can’t really recall which operator they have been with, unless, as in these two cases, it has been memorable for all the wrong reasons.) Given that Hermanus relies so heavily on its good reputation as a whale-watching destination, it is vitally important that the highest possible standards are maintained. When the whale-watching boat operators accept payment from their passengers, this should be a guarantee of safety and well-being as well as an acknowledgement that the operator intends meeting the passenger’s expectations for an enjoyable experience. I recognise that any genuine wildlife encounter is, by its very nature, unpredictable and that taking people out to sea in a boat always carries some risk and that sea conditions are notoriously changeable, but these factors cannot be used to disguise or excuse doubtful practices. I would urge all the whale-watching boat op-

“Jifa is smiling down on you”. Baie dankie

erators to act in a responsible manner at all times, irrespective of any financial considerations. At the same time, I would ask those with the necessary authority to make sure that safety regulations are always observed and that passengers’ well-being is paramount. I dread the day when the news hits town that, a whale-watching boat has, as a result of a foolhardy decision, met with misfortune.

IAN M. HERMANUS

Zolile Nqayi, director: communications of the Department of Environmental Affairs answers: This department is responsible for the permitting of boat-based whale watching (BBWW) in South Africa and has stringent permit conditions, to not only ensure the safety of passengers, but also for the protection of the environment and species, which is our primary mandate. All operators are bound by a Code of Conduct obliging the operator to brief clients on all safety procedures before going out to sea. This includes weather conditions on the day, and weather conditions likely to be expected during the period for which the booking will be made. The permit holder must operate in weather conditions suitable for BBWW with due regard to the relevant laws in respect of sea conditions and safety. The permit holder is also requested to inform the land-based safety officer before going to sea and on return and to remain in continuous radio contact while at sea.

Pay out for more than a week. What is the traffic dept’s problem, can’t they fix it? Neville Michaels (Director of Protection Services) answers: This robot was fixed on Monday morning and is now fully operational again. ) As a first time visitor to the Hermanus Station Centre a few months ago, I could not help to notice the professionalism of the security staff on duty. First I was politely informed of the special parking arrangement. On moving through the centre, I was approached by another to inquire if they can be of any assist ance. This was very comforting as they seemed to be everywhere. I can now say that the Hermanus Station Centre is my first choice when it comes to shop ping due to this very professional securi ty staff. I would like to congratulate Pegasus Risk and Security on making this a delightful experience visiting the Hermanus Station Centre. Septic tank fees are unacceptable It is a disgrace that the Municipality is extorting exorbitant fees from ratepayers for septic tank removal facilities when these residents already pay the same rates and taxes and sewerage flat rate fees as main-line sewerage users. Now we have to pay extra for emptying these tanks and then do not even have the option whether they want to make use of this facility. It is futher the resident’s responsibility to maintain the tank at their own cost to ensure no underwater ciphering or leakage takes place.

But the reason septic tanks collect more water than the consumption, and need to be emptied and pumped more often is that Westcliff (for one), all along Church Street, is prone to flash floods. The residents have suffered enormous damage and losses over the past months due to bad drainage and incorrect floodwater channelling. Residents across the road from the Mediclinic, Pathology Centre behind the Provincial Hospital and across from FynbosPark specifically are kneedeep in water in their gardens

and in their homes with every heavy downpour. Septic drains fill through the top lid as there is nowhere else for the water to go but in the empty tanks. After each flood the Municipality’s corrective action is to pile soil in heaps on either side of driveways to absorb the water and create a muddy disaster along the sidewalks of Church Street until the next flash flood and residents must pay to have the water drained. Westcliff residents should demand to know what the Ward Councillor, Town Planner and

Sunny, but cold weather is expected over the next few days, with temperatures as low as 10°C on Saturday, rising again on Sunday. Monday will be clear and warm with a maximum of 25°C expected.

Infrastructure Committee plan to do about this archaic and ridiculously costly municipal service called the Septic Tank.

WESTCLIFF SEPTIC TANKER

In the mayoral committee meeting held on 21 August, it was recommended to council that tariff SE7A1 and tariff SE7A5 be amended with effect from 1 July 2014 by revoking the restrictive condition of a maximum of two vacuum tanker services during office hours per month. By the time of going to print, the decision taken by council was not yet made public.

Toast to and don’t roast Tim Noakes

Illegal looserunning dogs are a menace to all

tion, not quite forty years ago, sanctioned the changes to our western eating habits, so radically, so completely and dangerously. From those conditions arise the modern epidemic of diseases that bother Tim. This was the real official abandonment of a real original healthy balanced diet for humans. The use of the word “balanced” to describe diets that flow from the “guidelines” is quite wrong. The number of people diagnosed with diabetes in the US rose from about 1,2 million in 1950, through 5,8 million in 1980 to 6,8 million by 1987. From 1994 the rate increases even faster. Curiously, 1994-5 marks the beginning of what I call the “Statin era”, the beginning of giving statin drugs to stop the body producing its own cholesterol. The value of cholesterol to our cell structures, to our hormones, to our basic well-being is seriously distorted in everyday medicine. The drive by the pharmaceutical industry, promoting statins to block our body’s cholesterol production, supposedly to prevent heart attack deaths, has further complicated the modern development of diabetes. The message Tim Noakes offers about cholesterol management and diets challenges the pharmaceutical industries investment in the marketing of statins. Is this another reason to roast Tim? The US government’s 1977 nutritional guidelines jammed open the door for non-animal fats, in favour of chemically modified seed oils, for cereal-and-sugar loaded industrial foods and drinks, like never before. The money involved in this business is almost beyond comprehension. A walk through a modern supermarket reveals that maybe 20% of the space is devoted to natural food (fresh produce, meat, eggs and dairy). Most of the space is devoted to manmade food substitutes, full of chemicals to preserve, to thicken, to enhance flavour or colour. These are not foods, but very lucrative commodities. Marketers and manufacturers go to endless lengths to maintain sales, and they don’t appreciate the questions that Tim Noakes invites us to ask. Let us thank Tim, not roast him. He asks us to think.

Why the current heat and conflict around what Prof Tim Noakes is saying about some modern diets and modern diseases? Here’s my idea on this pressure-cooker subject: “It could only happen in modern times”. It couldn’t have happened before about 1880, and quite probably not before 1977. Simply put, we had not yet invented or developed the industrial refining equipment for mass production of storage-stable refined grain and sugars. The relatively modern epidemic of metabolic diseases, including Type 2 diabetes and associated cardiac diseases had not yet made an impact on our societies. Essentially, since the Agricultural Revolution about 12 000 years ago, we ate a modified ancestral diet, self modified forms of hunter-gatherer, coastal forager diets going back further by about 200 000 years to the days of the Anatomically Modern Man here at the bottom of Southern Africa. Major modern social change, including mass urbanisation, people abandoning farm life, migration from Europe to US cities still had to happen. Increasing production and consumption of refined carbohydrate, the smokes-and-drinks aftermath of the ’14-’18 war, still had to occur, before the diabetes and heart attack epidemic could provoke worldwide concern. In this data, you can see what still had to happen: By 1929 “heart attack” deaths would rise to 25,7 per 100 000 population, 52,2 deaths by 1938, 95,8 by 1945 and 307 by 1963. (International List of Causes of Deaths. prof. Louis S. de Villiers). By the end of WW2, medical science could cure the old infectious diseases that had plagued Man for hundreds of years. Life expectancy was rising, but new killers, cardiac deaths and diabetes, were making people very nervous. The desperate seeking of answers, through the 1950s and ’60s, by Ancel Keys and others, had still to happen. The really big 1977 switch away from animal protein and fats, away from eggs and butter, towards a “macaroni-andmargarine” high carbohydrate diet still had to occur. Ancel Keys’ findings, including the idea that animal fats caused high cholesterol and heart attacks, were followed and promoted by the McGovern committee on health and nutrition, resulted in the 1977 nutritional guidelines. This official governmental interven-

REAL DEAL

I have been a law abiding resident of Hermanus for the past 24 years and our home has always had several dogs that we love as our pets. My wife closely follows HAWS on Facebook and actively helps to re-home strays. We also regularly make donations to HAWS. But the time is fast approaching where I will be forced to defend myself, my wife and our dogs against unruly dogs on the loose, whose owners refuse to comply with the Overstrand leash-laws. Any transgression can cost them a fine of R500 for a first offence. I daily take my two smaller dogs for a short walk around the block. My wife also takes our bigger dog for a long walk of up to four kilometres daily, weather per-

You’re probably thinking: “Arghh! Not another dog pooh letter!” and I don’t blame you. I believe, however, that this incident was quite serious and that it’s in the public interest to be informed of it. To the rude woman ImetontheVOScoastalpathnear Jan Rabie’s pool at about 17:30 on Friday 15 August: I am a 65-year-old, semi-retired professional man living in Vermont. I walk along the coastal path at least three or four times a week. Like many other people, I carry a walking stick. I have come across you, in the same area, twice over the past six weeks or so. On both occasions I have been subjected to unprovoked aggression from your very large, black and white, unleashed Great Dane. He growled, bared his teeth and on one occasion came up behind me and bit the fabric of my jacket above my right elbow, his teeth just grazing my skin. Your response on both occasions was: “Sorry, it’s your stick. He doesn’t like sticks.” Although these incidents irked me a little, I avoided confrontation and did not take the matter further. Very poor judgement, as it turned out. I love dogs. I have a liberal approach to dogs on paths and on

back our streets so that we can all enjoy our walks with our best friends again. My wife has already come back from a walk covered in blood from dog bites, after dogs on the loose attacked my leashed dog while their owners did nothing. Remember lady your poodle/ small friendly doggie may come to harm if it attacks my dog and the blame will be yours not mine. With reference to the SMSs (HT 31/07/2014) and (HT 07/08/2014): Jean, I totally agree, taze the owner, not the dog. I will say to Angels P and M: Please do not hide behind religion and get the proper story before you criticise others.

mitting. All three our dogs are elderly, over twelve years old. We are both fit and active but over sixty and still working, which is why our walks with the dogs are so important to us. Unfortunately those walks are no longer a pleasure, because we are forced to arm ourselves with whips, tazers and pepper spray to protect ourselves and our dogs against other dogs. I cannot blame the loose-running dogs, with or without owners present, but I do put the full blame on the owners. I also want to request the majority of decent, law-abiding citizens who obey the leash laws to make their voices heard. That is the only way to take

beaches; I believe they should be allowed to run free, provided they are well-socialised and properly trained. Your dog is neither. How many other stick-carrying walkers has he threatened, upset and possibly frightened? Clearly, madam, your dog should have been on a leash. Now, on to Friday afternoon. Once again your unleashed dog came at me aggressively. I turned on him with uplifted finger and said, “Don’t you dare!” He backed off. Once again, your response was: “Sorry, he doesn’t like sticks.” I turned and walked on. Thedogcameatmeagain, more aggressively, twice, from behind. I was obliged to turn and raise my stick defensively. The third time I walked away he came at me again, even more aggressively. I have no doubt that he would have attempted to bite me. That is when I turned and whacked him: once, fairly hard, with my lightweight, rubber-tipped, cane hiking stick. Of course people get highly emotional when their pets are involved, but the torrent of vile invective that spewed from your mouth was uncalled for and truly disgusting. I found your language extremely offensive and insult-

ing. What a pity that your young daughter had to witness your appalling behaviour. The incident was very distasteful indeed. I walk for exercise and the peace it brings me. No-one should ever be subjected to any sort of aggression from a poorly socialised, uncontrolled dog, certainly not on a public walkway. Your dog should be on a leash, at all times. I regret having to whack your dog. More than that, I resent it – it should not have been necessary.Youhaveshownatrulystaggering lack of consideration, common sense and decency. I will continue to walk along the path, with my walking stick. If this sort of thing happens again – and I certainly hope it will not – I will have no alternative but to lodge a formal complaint. And if you ever subject me to any more of your filthy verbal abuse I will most certainly lay a charge of crimen injuria against you. I urge walkers not to make the same mistake I did. Unpleasant as it might be… immediately confront – and if necessary report – inconsiderate, irresponsible people who violate your rights in public places.

Stripes the ecocat finds a voice ELBÉ VAN HEERDEN There are many cats in the Overstrand and there are many cats on the internet, but there is only one Overstrand cat making waves on the internet and that is Stripes. Stripes is an eco-cat and has his own blog and Facebook page with the purpose of helping Whale Coast Conservation to make everyone, especially children, more eco-friendly by teaching them about conservation and going green. Stripes moved into the Green House, Whale Coast Conservation's head office, about a month ago. At first the team had no idea where he came from, but soon learnt that he belongs to the caretakers who live on the property. “The first thing he learnt about the Green House, was where the kitchen was,” says Anina Lee, Whale Coast Conservation’s communications manager, who gives Stripes his human voice. “Soon he was just as at home as the rest of the gang.” Dante Campbell, the IT technician helped to set up a Facebook page for Stripes and he is quickly making a name for himself online. He also has a blog where he shares stories about the eco-friendly things he is learning. (It is dictated by Anina as he still struggles to type with his paws!) "Our biggest struggle at the moment is to reach those children who do not have access to the internet. His stories are for anyone who enjoys conservation,” said Anina. Stripes is quite content with his life at the Green House, spending

time in the bee garden, lounging in the sun, disrupting meetings and learning more about the environment and then teaching others. To follow Stripes’ eco adventures, follow him on Facebook, where his blogs are also posted. You can also send Stripes an email at stripes@ocf.org.za, especially if he can help your school or group with conservation. ) Stripes shared some of his favourites with the Hermanus Times. Favourite place to sleep: Any soft place in the sun. Food: I will eat pretty much anything.

Stripes the ecocat teaches humans about conservation as he learns to go green. Colour: Green, all the way! Activity: I am quite dedicated to conservation, but I am still learning about all the things that happens here at the Green House. Like, I recently learnt that catching birds is not a good idea, because taking animals out of nature throws off the natural balance of things. Plant: I am not very fond of catnip, but I really like the blushing brides in my bee garden. I sit there often to watch the busy bees buzzing. I have also learnt that you can't play with bees. They don't play nice! Animal: Definitely my humans! I don’t like dogs very much... Your biggest dream in life: I am hoping to one day be internet famous, like that grumpy one and the silly one that climbs into boxes.

What started with a few free ranging chickens running around in Jeanne Groenewald’s backyard, rapidly grew over the years and culminated in the business Elgin Free Range Chickens (EFRC). All Jeanne wanted to do originally was to provide her family with chicken devoid of chemical enhancement. But armed with a strong entrepreneurial spirit and a BSc Agriculture in animal physiology and genetics, Jeanne was able to grow her small endeavour into one of South African poultry industry’s greatest success stories, whilst making a powerful contribution in the drive towards being truly free range. She was recently named the Western Capes’ Top Commercial Female Entrepreneur at the 2014 Female Entrepreneur Awards held at Nelson’s Creek by the Western Cape Department of Agriculture on Friday, 15 August. Groenewald was awarded for the all round excellence in which she runs her business. “I’m honoured to be receiving this award, although it definitely isn’t an individual accolade. Before you adopt While owning a pet can be extremely rewarding, it is important to remember that pet ownership is also a huge responsibility. As a pet owner you will be committed to providing for all the requirements of your pet: food, exercise, housing, grooming and veterinary care. We recommend that you take the time to research the species or breed / crossbreed you are adopting well before bringing it home, so that you are positive your choice of pet will be appropriate for your lifestyle and you are well prepared for its arrival. Adopting a pet should never be an impulsive decision. Animal shelters receive thousands of unwanted and abandoned animals each year, often the result of an ill-considered decision. Before you make the decision to become a pet owner ask yourself the following questions: Am I prepared to care for a pet for its whole life? The average lifespan of a dog or cat is about 12 years, with some dogs and cats living until 15 or even 20 years of age. While puppies and kittens are irresistibly adorable, you will need to be prepared to provide for an adult animal too and, in the case of some dogs, a much larger animal with considerable exercise requirements and a sizeable appetite. Can I afford a pet? There are many costs involved with pet ownership. Upfront costs can include vaccination, micro-chipping and sterilisation. However, you will need to be prepared to pay for food, deworming, annual health checks, vet bills, training, boarding, toys and bedding for the animal.

If an emergency or accident occurs, you will also need to ensure you will be able to pay for any veterinary treatment required. The costs of pet ownership will vary depending on the type of animal you choose. Remember that pets are an expensive addition to the family. Do I have time to care for a pet? Exercise, socialisation, grooming, training and play are important aspects of pet ownership. Some pets will require more of your time than others. Puppies and kittens require a large time investment. You will need to ensure that they settle into your house comfortably, are toilet-trained, socialised and that they are fed, exercised and taken to the vet when necessary. Adult animals also require a lot of time and care. Do I live in suitable accommodation with adequate space for a pet? Carefully consider the kind of accommodation you will be able to provide to your pet now and into the future before choosing one. Your home size and/or garden size are factors in determining your suitability as a pet owner for certain types of animals. If you live in a rented property think carefully before committing yourself to a pet. While some landlords allow pets, many do not and pet ownership may cause difficulties should you need to change accommodation. Check if animals are permitted at your accommodation. Will a pet fit into my lifestyle and priorities? Working hours, a busy social life and taking regular trips away are all factors that need to be considered before adopting a pet. Companion animals thrive on human company and will always depend on you. You must be sure that your lifestyle will accommodate them. Before you adopt, consider their specific requirement: Are you prepared to walk your dog every

day? Are you home often enough to keep your cat or dog company? Do you have time to give your puppy or kitten the basic reward-based training it needs? Who will care for your pet when you are away from home? – Source: www.kaws.co.za

KLEINMOND ANIMAL WELFARE SOCIE TY: The beautiful Honey B is still waiting for someone to take him under his or her wing. He is a most lovable boy. He gets on well with his camp mates with a very high level of tolerance for their shenanigans, but does not do so well with meeting new dogs. Once he knows them, he really could not be both ered with them further. Honey B will need some management, and will thrive in a home where someone will be willing to work with him and provides training and lots of walks, and perhaps a canine companion if he is going to be home alone. Phone Helene on 073 354 4915 or send an email to lo veisrescue@gmail.com. TOP LEFT: WANTS A GOOD HOME: Bil ly is a sixyearold boy and has been a resi dent of Kleinmond Animal Welfare Socie ty (KAWS) for five years. He is an active boy who can jump a standard concrete wall, therefore he will need a home that has a high and secure fence. Billy is dynamite in a small package and will fit well with a family who is active and can provide him with the exercise he needs. Contact Helene Strydom on 073 354 4915 or loveisrescue@gmail.com for more info or to adopt him.

Dig in and plant a tree in Eastcliff To keep our open spaces green, residents of Hermanus and especially Eastcliff, are invited to participate in a tree planting celebration at 10:00 on Thursday 4 September in honour of Arbour Day. This year the play park opposite Hermanus High School in Moffat Rd, has been identified as an area in need of beautification. All residents are urged to wear casual clothes and garden gloves, bring along a big bottle of water and “dig in”. Residents in the area are also urged to adopt one or more trees and ensure that

they are well watered and nurtured throughout the summer months. Perhaps people with boreholes on their properties will share the precious commodity. “It is really up to all of us to make sure that our neighbourhoods and open green spaces are kept in tiptop condition,” Kari Brice, councillor of Ward 3 and organiser of the tree planting day, said. “Remember: The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The next best time is now!” For more information contact Brice on 083 650 4206.

Elmara Willis in front of the St James cathedral in Santiago. She is embark ing on her fourth Camino in October. If you want to share in Elmara’s knowl edge, she will be holding a workshop on the first Saturday in March 2015.

The Camino Frances is regarded as the most popular of all the Camino routes. It starts in St Jean Pied de Port on the French side of the Pyr enees and finishes 790 km later in Santiago.

“Boskloof is nou nie in gemeenskapsbesit of besonder bekend soos ’n Groot Constantia of ’n Vergelegen nie. Tien besoeke aan Akteskantoor, S.A. Bib en Kartografie. Tien besoeke aan Caledon-museum. Tien

Elmara shares her walk in ‘the field of stars’ CILENE BEKKER “Buy shoes two sizes bigger. Buy earbuds to block out all the snoring. Use walking sticks as it takes 34% stress off your knees.” These are some of the tips that Elmara Willis shared during her talk at a U3A meeting at the municipal auditorium on 14 August about tackling the Camino de Santiago Compostela pilgrimage walk. Literally translated this means Path to (Camino de) St James (Santiago) in the field of stars (Compostela). Should you decide to walk the walk you will be among 280 000 others who do it every year. According to the caminoadventures.com website there are five main Camino de Santiago pilgrimage routes in Spain: the Camino Frances, the Via de la Plata, the Northern Routes, the English Road, and the Portuguese Road (starts in Portugal). Elmara has walked the long road, the Camino Frances, which starts in St Jean Pied de Port, France and finishes 780 km later in Santiago. It took her 34 days to complete. Now, in October, she is embarking on her fourth Camino, this time taking the Portuguese

Road (230 km). Elmara refers to the walk as a journey of self discovery. “The correct way of doing the Camino is to walk it alone. The first few days your head is full of conversations and your mind starts going into past worries and sins. It takes about 7 days for your head to clear. Then comes the point where you realise you aren’t thinking about anything and you start noticing nature, enjoying every moment of where you are. The chattering in your head stops. That’s the magic of the Camino!” “That’s why people keep going back. It’s very difficult to explain but it can be a life changing experience.” Getting back to basics, Elmara explained that to walk it, your body must be used to regular walking, at least an hour per day. During the route you cover around 25 km per day. She recommends reading everything you can on the internet about the various routes, but if you want to hear more hints and tips from Elmara, and how to pack a backpack weighing only 7 kg, she is hosting a workshop on the first Saturday in March 2015. For more information email elmara@telkomsa.net.

A mother dealing with the ultimate loss of a child CILENE BEKKER Although it is by nature a very sad story, the book is not a depressing read. Peter and Jami Yeast-Kastner lost their youngest son, 18-month-old Sam, in a tragic drowning accident at their Stanford Hills farm on 8 February 2013. The book Sam and Me & The Hard Pear Tree, written in diary format, covers the first year since The.Day.It.Happened (as Jami refers to it). In total soul-bearing honesty and a wry sense of humour Jami writes about coping with her loss while dealing with her everyday life as wife, co-runner of the estate and mom of Sam’s two brothers - Alex (now 5) and special-needs brother

Jack (now 7). She shares this journey in such an open manner, that it makes for captivating reading, and yes, at times, heart-wrenching. Ultimately the book becomes less about grief and more about finding a sense of selffulfilment and drawing on inspirational insights to continue dealing with the cards life dealt her. “What happened made me realise how precious life is. How important it is to live in the now!,” says Jami. “The book contains a lot of sharing, and quite a bit of swearing, but I’ve learnt to stop trying to please everyone. Now it’s all about family time.” As Jami notes in her foreword: In this last year I have found faith: faith that Sam is still with us; faith in the kindness of strangers; and faith in myself and the strength of

our family. I have learnt that love truly can survive the separation between this world and the next.” ) Jami was the special guest at the Bhuki Café at the Hermanus Library on Friday morning. Reading her book you will find out all about the significance of butterflies in her life. Arriving Jami, little Sam, Jack, Alex and Peter. at the Bhuki Café, the first thing Jami noticed was the parents of special needs children in spine of a book Pennington’s Butter- the area in order to create support flies, in the shelf right across from for parents and fun interactive acwhere she was sitting. tivities for the kids. Email her on ja) Jami would like to connect with mi@stanfordhills.co.za.

The book dedication reads “To my longsuffering husband and our beautiful boys. All three of them.”

JUSTICE DENIED by Dr David Klatzow. If you are accused of a crime you did not commit, do you be lieve that justice will prevail in a court of law? Per haps you should think again. Contrary to what tele vision series like CSI and NCIS would have one be lieve, forensic science does not provide instant answers to impenetrable crimes; in reality, forensic science is neither clearcut nor easy to interpret, and practitioners are not all competent – as renowned forensic scientist Dr David Klatzow proves in this book. In Justice Denied, he exposes the miscarriages of justice resulting from the faulty courtroom testimo ny of corrupt or incompetent forensic pathologists and unscrupulous public prosecutors who seek con victions at all costs. ) Join Dr Klatzow for the book launch on Sunday 31 August at the Stanford Hotel at 10:00. Ford Ranger derivative tougher than ever Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa (FMCSA) recently introduced a mine-hardened version of its popular Ranger to the local market. The new variant – the Ranger XL-Plus – is a new entry-level proposition into the lineup while offering a new dimension of toughness to the range. It is of particular interest to mining companies, farmers and other business owners with very specific requirements. “The Ranger XL-Plus was born out of particu-

lar requirements from the mining industry, as well as other business owners whose main concerns were rugged capability and impeccable safety standards,” says Mark Kaufman, vice president of marketing, sales and service at FMCSA. “The vehicle is already extremely capable, and big mining companies have committed to using only vehicles that have five-star ENCAP and ANCAP ratings, which Ranger XLT and Wildtrak derivatives boast.” Built at the Silverton Assembly Plant in Pretoria, following a $1,8 million investment, Ranger XL-Plus is now also exported to other markets with mining operations, such as Australia and New Zealand . With airbags for both the driver and passenger, as well as side impact, curtain, and a driver-side knee airbag, Ranger XL-Plus complies with the safety requirements determined by international mine operators. In addition, it has an optional bullbar designed to work in conjunction with the car’s existing safety systems, thus not compromising airbag deployment.

An extensive list of modifications has also been tested to ensure the Ranger XL-Plus will stand up to the harsh environments seen in mining operations and various other heavy duty applications. External modifications and enhancements include a frame tested for an increased towing load of 3 500 kg, an optional heavy duty front bumper, extruded aluminium side steps, front mud flaps, and a lockable fuel filler cap. Inside and under the skin, the Ranger XL-Plus gains a Crew Chief mounting bracket paired to an expanded wiring harness for accommodating more switches and circuits, a heavy duty second battery, vinyl floor covering, and heavy duty seat covers. “Modifications developed for the Ranger XLPlus came from extensive testing in realworld scenarios,” says Kaufman. “We took feedback from our clients on what more they need from the Ranger in applications such as mining, and built a version of Ranger that will take a lot more punishment, as well as offer integration with technical equipment used on sites.”

Ranger XL-Plus is available in three body styles with two chassis cab models in single and double cab variations, and a double cab model with a load box. Drive comes from the Duratorq 2,2 F TDCi engine mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. All models have four-wheel drive and are fitted with an Electronic Locking Rear Differential. “We’re building the Ranger XL-Plus locally, meaning we can give our customers a factoryready version of a vehicle that meets their demands. Modifications for this version of the Ranger can be rolled out during production, so customers don’t have to wait for aftermarket customisations,” ends Kaufman. All Ranger derivatives come with a comprehensive 4-year / 120 000 km warranty and a 5-year / 90 000 km service plan with service intervals of 15 000 km. Customers will also benefit from 3 years of roadside assistance and a 5-year corrosion warranty as part of the Ford Ranger package. www.ford.co.za

Legendary Nissan NP300 Hardbody The Nissan NP300 Hardbody is an unmistakable legend of the South African light commercial vehicle market. As a thoroughbred work-

horse or as a style icon, the Nissan NP300 Hardbody continues to offer exceptional return on investment. Ford’s range of diesel engines are cleaner firing for smoother acceleration and drivability, resulting in improved all-round performance and fuel efficiency with reduced emissions. It also means a more comfortable ride with less noise, reduced wear and tear, and a decrease in maintenance costs. The Nissan NP300 Hardbody is confident on virtually any surface. The quality finish of the bodywork is tested by firing diamond chips at the paintwork, which ensures maximum protection from flying gravel or stones. And an all round E-coat anti-rust treatment means this workhorse can easily cope with extreme humidi-

ty and wet conditions. No matter how tough the task, the Nissan NP300 Hardbody gets the job done. – www.ford.co.za

The Nissan ALMERA is available with a 1.5 F petrol engine. The 1 498 cc unit produc es a healthy 73 kW of power at 6 000 rpm and 134 Nm of torque at 4 000 rpm. The lowemission and efficient engine allows the fivespeed manual version of the new Nissan ALMERA to achieve average combined cycle fuel economy of 6,3 F per 100 km, the fourspeed automatic variant achieving 7,2. Carbon emissions for both models are 149 g/km and 171 g/km respectively. SOURCE/PHOTO: WWW.NISSAN.CO.ZA

6LITRE BITURBO = 463KW

Mercedes Benz S 65 AMG is here QUICKPIC Twelve cylinders, twin-turbocharging, 463kW of output and 1 000 Nm of torque – the new S 65 AMG sets the standard as the most powerful vehicle in its segment of the market. Exceptional performance and outstanding dynamism – these are the hallmarks of the AMG 6,0-litre V12 biturbo engine. With its reduced fuel consumption, the new V12 sedan is fit for the future as well. The AMG sports suspension based on Magic Body Control comes as standard with Road Surface Scan, the world’s first suspension with eyes. It goes without saying that the S 65 AMG offers supreme exclusivity in design and equipment specification. Two innovations, the head-up display and the touchpad, represent further enhancements in terms of comfort and safety. The S 65 AMG is the only high-performance 12-cylinder automobile from a German premium manufacturer – and it is a car with a pedigree: the first generation of the S 65 AMG was launched in 2003, with the second generation being produced from 2006 until 2013. “Following the successful introduction of the S 63 AMG in late 2013, we are now proud to bring the new S 65 AMGL.Supremeluxuryandincomparable dynamism provide the guarantee of a truly incredible driving experience. With the third generation of the S 65 AMG, we offer our V12 customers

a unique and exclusive high-performance automobile,” says Selvin Govender, Divisional Manager, Product & Marketing, Mercedes-Benz Cars. The AMG 6,0-litre V12 biturbo engine delivers 463 kW with a maximum torque of 1 000 Nm – figures that enable the S 65 AMG to outperform all other vehicles in its segment. This superiority is highlighted by the car’s performance: the S 65 AMG accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4,3 seconds, with a top speed of 250 km/h (electronically limited). The strengths of the 12-cylinder biturbo engine from Mercedes-AMG include its effortless acceleration in all speed ranges as well as its refined operation, with the distinctive V12 sound typical of AMG. In short: the S 65 AMG impresseswithitssuperiorandstylish performance. Compared with the previous model, fuel consumption has been reduced by 2,4 litres per 100 kilometres (NEDC, combined). With a fuel consumption of 11,9 litres per 100 km (NEDC, combined), the new S 65 AMG is the world’s most fuel-efficient V12 high-performance sedan in terms of power and torque. The S 65 AMG features as standard the AMG sports suspension based on Magic body control. The new S-Class is the first car in the world able to recognise road surface undulations in advance. If Road Surface Scan detects such undulations with the help of the stereo camera, Magic Body Control adjusts the suspension in advance to suit the situation. The “Comfort” and “Sport” modes are available for a driver-defined suspension setup.

.The AMG 6,0litre V12 Biturbo engine delivers 463 kW with maximum torque of 1000 Nm – figures that en able the S 65 AMG to outperform all other vehicles in its segment PHOTO: QUICKPIC While AMG-specific elastokinematics on the four-link front axle and multilink independent rear suspension make for greater directness when a dynamic driving style is adopted, the AMG sports suspension, based on Magic Body Control ensures the proverbial Mercedes long-distance comfort. The S 65 AMG is equipped as standard with ESP® Dynamic Cornering Assist. Targeted braking intervention at the inside rear wheel results in defined cornering of the vehicle and ensures greater agility when taking corners at high speed. There is no irritating understeer when turning into corners. Intelligent Drive: new standards in safety The S 65 AMG also sets new standards in terms of active and passive safety: what began with PRE-SAFE® ten years ago and continued with Distronic plus is now leading to a new dimension in driving. Comfort and safety have merged into one. MercedesBenz calls this “Intelligent Drive” New systems make the new S-Class even more comfortable and safer: • Rear PRE-SAFE® package (optional) • Night View Assist Plus (standard) As with the previous model, the new S 65 AMG is available exclusively with a long wheelbase. The AMG V12 sedan is introduced with the class-leading six-year/100 000 km PremiumDrive maintenance: S 65 AMG: R2 842 700 (inclusive of VAT.)

BOLAND Auto Sold SUPER TOURER: For the 2015 model year KTM will add to its Adventure range and take it even fur ther with the new KTM 1290 Super Ad venture. As its name suggests, the 1290 builds on the current 1190 Adventure. The Super Adventure fea tures a bigger engine to increase power and torque. An unu sually large fuel tank will mean longer in tervals before the need to stop; perfect for when the journey is long or so addictive that the rider just doesn’t need or want to get off the saddle. As with the 1190, the Super Adventure will feature the pio neering Motorcycle Stability Control (MSC) system. More details will be announced when the 1290 Super Adventure is officially launched at Intermot show in Cologne, Germany, on 30 September. PHOTO: QUICKPIC

Lukhanyo Primary gets computer lab from Vodacom Millionaires JANHENDRIK COETZER Lukhanyo Primary School in Zwelihle became the 322nd school that received laptops and related equipment from Vodacom Millionaires, a popular TV game show broadcast on e-TV. On Thursday 22 August, the school received 20 learner laptops, one educator laptop, an interactive white board, projector, a server, printer, cartridges and data. All this equipment will be maintained for two years, and all the teachers will receive training and continued support via a dedicated call centre. According to Lukhanyo Primary School principal, Morris Tshabalala, this computer centre will have a positive impact on both the learners and teachers. “Teachers will now be able to prepare themselves better for their lessons, whereby the quality of educa-

tion will improve as a result. Vodacom really came to our rescue, because we had a computer lab before, but it hasn’t been working for the past four years,” says Tshabalala. Lukhanyo Primary School head girl, Vuyolwethu Gawnlekapa, also thanked Vodacom for their donation. “With this computer lab we are now able to learn all these new skills and together make the world a better place,” says Gawnlekapa. Vodacom Millionaires manager, Paula Carvalho, said that by providing technology, “it will definitely improve the quality of education for these learners.” ) Vodacom Millionaires encourages all public schools that are in need of computer centres to apply. PROUDLY CURRO: Shawn Castle, a learner at Curro Hermanus, was selected to represent the u.13 Southern Boland rugby team.

Golf roundup with Julian Shaw This week was one of so near and yet so far. Our brave soldiers of the Brodie team, in a bid to get to the finals of the Boland league, just lost out this Saturday to an in form Stellenbosch team. The guys can feel very proud of themselves as they tied in third place out of 32 league teams. This is the best the team has done for over a decade. Well done to team captain Stephen van der Merwe for guiding his men so well, and well done to the team for a gallant and valiant effort. This week was a bit of a washout, the ladies were blown away on Tuesday and the men were washed away on Wednesday, luckily though the weather turned and we had a lovely Saturday with 116 players and a nice bogey plus alliance format. Coming out on top this week was Simon Upton, Brian Barker, Ray Calitz and current president Wendell Meiring with +23, just one point behind winning a count out was Neil Malan, Pierre Husselman, Jan Kuhn and Andre Nel. There were only 5 two clubs and the ball pool paid to +16. The large jackpot is still in tact and rising, it now stands at R1 485. Two exceptional scores this week were Alan Toombs and Hennie Theron, both recording a superb nett 65. Special mention for the play of the day must go to our friendly marshal Rod Taylor, who managed an eagle on the sixth hole, driver, 3 wood, 5 iron into the hole! Well done. Until next week, keep calm and go golfing.

Cum Laude winners: Shawn Collins and Richard Foye. Absent: Tamia Bou wer.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) together with the Overstrand Municipality organised a Sports against Crime Street Soccer Tournament at Zwelihle sportsground on Saturday. The main purpose of the event was to select under 14 boys who will represent the Hermanus Cluster on the Provincial Sports against Crime tournament at Pinelands Police sport grounds on 25 October. There were teams from Stanford, Kleinmond, Hawston, Mount Pleasant and Zwelihle that participated in the tournament. According to Constable Mbongeni Mazuthu, the main objective of the whole project is to keep the youth busy with sport, “so that they don’t have time to do wrong things and also to create good community relationship between the police and community”, Mazuthu explained. The event organisers thanked the Hermanus Community Police Forum (CPF), Hermanus Fruit and Veg City and Hermanus Fruit and Veg for sponsoring food for the children as well as Hennie Westraat, chairperson of the CPF and his wife who prepared sand-

Pieter de Villiers by Laerskool ELBÉ VAN HEERDEN Oud-Springbokafrigter, Pieter de Villiers, wat deesdae meer bekend is as motivering-spreker, het verlede week besoek afgelê by Laerskool Hermanus om die leerders aan te moedig om hul beste te gee by die afgelope naweek se interskole. “Toe ek jonk was, wou ek graag gehad het mense moet van my hou,” vertel De Villiers.

Slegs hoe ons voorberei is ’n bereikbare doelwit. Dít is in julle hande.”
