BIKERS BEARING GIFTS: Over 70 bikers rode into town for the annual Charity Ride Toy Run on Saturday. The group gathered in Hawston and pro ceeded through the Hermanus CBD to the end point at the Old Harbour. Gra ham van Heerden, president of the Her manus Social Motorcycle Club, said it was amazing to see a bunch of so called hooligans riding peacefully with toys and gifts tied to their bikes – things one would not normally associ ate with “bad” boys and girls. With pink teddy bears on Harleys, dog food on BMWs, toy fire engines on super bikes and canned food on scooters, the riders had one goal in mind: to ride bearing gifts for children in need. The event was organised by the Hermanus SMC and Hermanus Staan Saam. These generous donations from the public and the bikers will be distributed soon.

OVERSTRAND TOURISM : GET READY FOR INFLUX OF VISITORS

Booming season expected HEDDA MITTNER “We are expecting a very good season,” says Mary Faure, chairperson of Hermanus Tourism. “Bookings are up from last year and we are having to turn away people who are looking for accommodation on a daily basis.” Several roleplayers in the local tourism and hospitality industries share Faure’s opinion, which corresponds to a positive trend in the whole of the Western Cape. “All our regions are expecting a good influx of tourists this year,” says Judy Lain, chief marketing officer at Wesgro, the Western Cape’s Tourism, Investment and Trade Promotion Agency. “The accommodation establishments are much busier than last

year,” confirms Suné Greeff, tourism manager of the Cape Whale Coast. “The rand is very weak at the moment and overseas visitors seem to be taking advantage of the favourable exchange rate.” According to Greeff, the statistics for visitors to the Cape Whale Coast tourism bureaus – Hermanus, Hangklip-Kleinmond, Stanford and Gansbaai – show a marked increase. During the month of October alone 6 269 people visited the bureaus, compared to 3 802 in the same month last year, and 2 842 in 2011. “The enquiries are coming in thick and fast,” adds Teressa Jones, office manager of Hermanus Tourism, “and not only from overseas vistors. I think the weaker rand is seeing local visitors spending their holiday at the coast, rather than travelling abroad. We are heavily

booked over the period 20 December to 5 January; however there is still availability.” General Manager of the Windsor Hotel, Blake Albert, says their bookings are way ahead of last year. “Even the first two weeks in December, which are normally quiet, are busy this year. And the forward bookings right up until February are phenomenal. In fact, we have had an incredible run since June, and I think we are in for one helluva December.” Albert also feels that the declining rand plays a role by “attracting foreigners and trapping locals”. Monique Oosthuizen, PA to the general manager of The Marine, also reports that for the first two weeks in December they are busier than usual, with high occupancy continuing through January and

February. “And from about 19 December until just after New Year we are jam-packed,” she says. Pikkie Stapelberg of Accommodation Galore also says they are doing much better than last year. “We are almost fully booked from 16 December to 5 January. People who still need accommodation will have to jump.” Visitors are, however, price sensitive, she says. “What is happening more and more is that people club together and you’ll find that couples or families rent a house together and share the cost between them.” Albert says Hermanus offers good value across all accommodation markets and that the restaurants and retailers should take heed of that. “They should look after our visitors and not bang up their prices. By exploiting them we’ll only

hurt tourism in the long run as visitors will not return if they don’t get value for money.” Mary Faure says she likes to think that the growth in tourism is not only because of the weaker rand, but rather the tremendous effort that has been made by Hermanus Tourism and the Overstrand Municipality in implementing new marketing strategies. “Things don’t happen overnight, but we are definitely moving in the right direction,” she says. “Through social media, word of mouth and our tireless participation in tourism showcases, expos and indabas both locally and internationally, as well as our development of unique festivals throughout the year, we are making our mark and word is getting out there that Hermanus is a great destination.”

An elderly man in a wheelchair became the second victim of an ATM card fraud scheme at the Gateway Centre on Sunday afternoon, only days after a 96-year old man was also conned at the same ATM. An amount of R4 000 was withdrawn from the man’s account on Sunday, after he had finished his transaction at the Absa ATM. He said he was offered “help” quite forcefully by people standing around even though he did not need any help. According to Marelize Acker, office administrator at the Gateway Centre’s centre management, many cases of fraud and theft have been reported to them. “We suspect that the fraudsters drive a turquoise Toyota Tazz with a CA registration number, as we have seen them hanging around the centre and ATMs for quite some time now. When the security at the centre tries to confront the suspects however,

they (usually) drive off.” The centre has informed police about the incidents. Hermanus police says they are aware of about 40 incidents of card fraud or ATM theft at ATMs at the Gateway Centre and the central business district this year. According to lieutenant Fadila September, spokesperson for the Hermanus police, they have received information about possible suspects involved in these scams and are following up on these leads. The communication department of the Hermanus police has embarked on awareness campaigns around ATMs. They distributed pamphlets to users at ATMs and are planning further awareness campaigns. Police officers have also been made aware of these incidents and increased patrols will be conducted around the ATMs. “The public is urged once again to take care when using ATMs and to not accept help from strangers,” September said.

Two murder suspects remain in custody JANINE VAN DER RIET The two suspects arrested for the separate murders of two Zwelihle residents remain in custody. Hermanus police detectives arrested both suspects on the same day. The suspect in the murder of Thobelani Fuazani (23) in Mfundo Street appeared in court on Tuesday. The case was postponed until 3 December for a bail application. Fuazani died after he and the suspect allegedly

Pedestrian had two operations since accident JANINE VAN DER RIET Lina Philander, the pedestrian who was knocked down by a motorist in a black Volkswagen Beetle at the Kidbrooke turn off in Onrus on the morning of Monday 18 November, is still in hospital. A case of reckless and negligent driving is being investigated by the Hermanus police against the driver. The driver said he had lost control of his vehicle and in the process knocked over Philander, who was crossing the road. Philander was first taken to the Hermanus Provincial Hospital and was later transferred to a hospital in Worcester. Her daughter Monique says her mother is still in hospital and has had to undergo two operations so far, but that she is doing well under the circumstances. Monique thanked everyone most sincerely for assisting her mother at the accident scene. “We heard that a woman had taken blankets and towels out of her car and also took off her jersey to help keep my mother warm. “We also want to say thank you to the bystanders who phoned the ambulance and police. We deeply appreciate all your assistance.”

In the second incident Nicolas Qobani (18) was waiting for his brother outside a shebeen in Transit Camp when a man allegedly stabbed him in the neck and ran away. Qobani died on the scene. He was out on bail in connection with a murder at the time of the incident. The suspect in this case abandoned his bail application and will remain in custody, pending further investigation.

Insurance claims flooding in KERRY VAN RENSBURG Insurance companies have had their hands full trying to assess the extent of the damage caused by the recent flood to private households and small businesses. Torrential rain on Friday 15 November and Saturday 16 November flooded homes, destroyed business premises and damaged

Counting the cost According to the Overstrand Municipality’s preliminary estimates, the recent flood damage to infrastructure totals between R2M and R3M. It includes: . Erosion of access routes to production boreholes T4/1 and T4/2, the transformer, pipe and cable routes. . Fernkloof Nature Reserve: - Damage to ‘3 Damme’ access road - One of the dam walls was damaged - Bulk water pipe from the dam to town has washed away - Road to store and roads in the reserve were badly damaged - Footpaths and walkways in the reserve are badly damaged . Sandbaai sewage pump station . Mount Pleasant security wall . Wastewater Treatment Works security wall . Swallow Park barrier wall . Coastal boardwalks & pedestrian bridges . Stormwater pipe in Westcliff . Stormwater c/o Main & Mimosa Road . Landa Street in Zwelihle Other areas: . Kleinmond paved roads (Riemvasmaak) . Otter Close low level bridge . Bettys Bay gravel roads . Pringle Bay gravel roads . Rooiels main water supply . Gansbaai Caravan Park wall . In Gansbaai the electrical depot was flooded and some of the equipment has been damaged.

stock. Donald Kau, head of corporate affairs at Santam, says: “We’ve received just over 1 000 claims estimated to be worth in the region of R30 million at this point for the Somerset West area all the way past Hermanus to Gansbaai. These would primarily be households as well as small businesses.” Daniel Bothma from Dawie Bothma Insurance Consultancy in Hermanus, says Hermanus didn’t suffer that badly and as far as claims go, it was not nearly as bad as they had expected. Daniel says they are agents for Santam, and had about five claims which included a client’s car which was ruined after his entire driveway was flooded, and homes that were flooded – made worse by sewage running into the houses. They also had several smaller claims related to flood damage. Daniel says Santam are giving policyholders that have been impacted by the flood, precedence at the moment, which means their claims are being processed first. Nina De Does, Hermanus branch manager of Prism Consultants, confirmed this, saying the insurance company (most of their clients are insured through Santam), codes an event like the flood as a catastrophic event, and all claims for flood damage are linked and have priority over regular claims. De Does says this is because people’s homes have been badly damaged and they need to have them sorted out as quickly as possible. She says their clients who have household and homeowner insurance are insured against disasters of this nature, which includes both the contents of their homes and the physical structure of the house. De Does says they have definitely received more claims than normal and so far they have 22 additional claims all as a result of flood damage. She says their biggest claim is for about R500 000.

All parking marshalls in the Hermanus CBD are back on duty after they were unable to work for about a week. They could not perform their regular duties due to lightning that damaged the Overstrand Municipality’s communication network (including the external server) over last weekend when the area received over 165 mm of rain. The municipality was basically offline for a week and the main “parking” computer was also affected and the parking marshalls could not operate as usual. However, all parking management services are now up and running again.

On Friday Liza van Coppenhagen (right) and her team had sludge pumps going to drain away ground water seepage. Michael Bayer (left) from The Beanery, spent the entire day digging, draining and sloshing around in kneedeep mud. They were assisted by Victor James and John Nyabunze.

No one who enjoyed the glorious sunshine and lively trading at the Hermanus Country Market on Saturday morning would have guessed that on Friday a team of people were still trying to minimise the site’s major sludge problem. The market was closed on Saturday 16 November because of the floods that ravaged the Overstrand. They also could not run their Wednesday evening market as the grounds, on the edge of the cricket ground, were sodden. On Friday 22 November Liza van Coppenhagen, the market organiser, said the groundwater seepage was so severe that when they dug a hole to put in a pole, they discovered a mass of water that had nowhere to go. Van Coppenhagen said they were knee-deep in mud. Overall the market has lost 12 trading days in the last four months and in order to remain sustainable they need a proper roof so that they can keep going in the wet weather. “We have approximately 60 traders who rely on the market for their income and there are people who are suffering. We can ill afford this kind of setback.” said Van Coppenhagen who was frustrated by the rain and the mud. To alleviate the ground-water seepage problem, Andrienette Fourie and Andre van der Merwe from the Hermanus Sports Club (HSC) committee organised a digger loader to dump dry sand at the entrance to the market and at the worst affected areas. The digger loader and its driver came courtesy of Peter Starke Civils.

PHOTOS: KERRY VAN RENSBURG

Furrows were dug so the water could flow into the nearby storm-water drainage area, and sludge pumps were installed to pump out thousands of litres of water. This water had to flow into the already overflowing and swampy storm-water drain which runs along the edge of the cricket ground in the direction of Hermanus High in Jose Burman Road. Van Coppenhagen says the market traders are thankful to Steven Murphy from Coastal Tool Hire who provided the sludge pump at no charge. On behalf of the market traders, Van Coppenhagen would like to thank the many people who came to their rescue on Friday. Although the traders could trade on Saturday, the hours of digging and the digger loader helped provide a short-term solution to a longterm problem. By Saturday, wooden pallets were laid down in the soggiest areas for market visitors who streamed in by the hundreds.

Minister visits for16 days campaign JANINE VAN DER RIET As part of his 16 Days of No Violence against Women and Children campaign, Dan Plato, Western Cape MEC for Community Safety, visited Hermanus and Zwelihle on Monday. His first stop was at the community hall in Proteadorp, Kleinmond where Plato raised his concerns regarding violence against women and children. Plato then went to the relaunch of the trauma room facility at the Kleinmond police station, which was upgraded by the Business Against Crime (BAC) and Kleinmond Superspar. Plato’s next stop was at the Hermanus police station for the re-

launch of their trauma centre, together with representatives of BAC and the owners of Eastcliff Spar. Shawn Koen from BAC said they started the initiative, in partnership with police stations across the country and with Spar as the sponsor, to transform all the trauma rooms into a “cosy, happy and safe environment” for victims. “All the victim support rooms will look the same, with a relaxed atmosphere,” said Koen. “These rooms must assist victims to become victors at the end of the day.” Two such brave victors shared their stories at the relaunch ceremony. One is 69-year old Roseline Forte from Mount Pleasant, who said she is a victor today after being raped by four men in 2001. In 2002 she tested positive for HIV/Aids, but says she is fighting the stigma as well as the illness with a smile on her face. “At the clinic I am known as “Kannie dood” and the sisters are amazed

that I continue to live a good, healthy life.” A volunteer at the trauma centre, Christine May has helped Forte over the years. “Christine is my angel in disguise. Without her help I would have been lost.” Another brave victor, Irma van Heerden, spoke about an abusive relationship that almost cost her her life. “I am thankful that the police stood by me, helped me to move out, and kept me and my two children safe.” She spoke bravely about the nightmare she went through. Plato asked all non-profit organisations to step in and help the trauma room remain a place of comfort and safety for the community. “It is time to speak out. If you are abused, speak out. This is the only way that this type of crime can be stopped.” Col Vincent Cetyana, cluster commander of the Hermanus police, told Plato that every police station needed a domestic violence office so that cases of abuse could be followed up regularly. After Plato’s visit to the Hermanus police station, he went to the community hall in Zwelihle where, together with his entourage and Overstrand municipality councillors, he took to the streets of Zwelihle, handing out goodie bags with food and pamphlets to residents. “Our women and children have a right to be safe and treated with respect and care. Partners and family members must take care of each other. Only when we have peace in our homes can we have peace in our communities,” Plato said.

Members of the Zwelihle Parenting Worx programme took to the stage at the Zwelihle Community Hall to sing a few songs as part of the Rainbow Trust’s yearend ceremony last Thursday.

Mothers benefit from parenting programme KERRY VAN RENSBURG A celebration to showcase the progress made by Parenting Worx programme participants throughout the year was held at the Zwelihle Community Hall on Thursday 21 November. This child and family orientated programme is run in Zwelihle, Kleinmond, Stanford and Gansbaai by the Hermanus Rainbow Trust. Parenting Worx started in Zwelihle in 2009 with 14 women and has since grown exponentially. Speaking on behalf of the Rainbow Trust, Winnie Nywebeni said parents who have been part of the programme since the beginning say they can see the change in themselves and the positive results in their own families. The mothers, and a few fathers who are part of the Parenting

Worx’s Fatherhood programme, have an opportunity twice a week, to speak about their problems, experiences and the challenges they face. They also receive input on how to look after their children and be responsible parents. The programme has an income generating project in the form of a garden initiative and participants are able to play sport as a form of exercise and stress relief. Every Wednesday, medical students from the University of Stellenbosch visit the women and offer parenting advice and a health care programme. At Thursday’s event, groups of women from each community were represented and took to the stage to tell what the programme meant to them and to sing a number of items which resounded through the hall.

AMONG THE TOP 20 IN THE WORLD: Wine Spectator, America’s leading interna tional wine publication, recently selected two wines from the HemelenAarde Valley for their Top 100 Wines worldwide. The Hamilton Russell Vineyards Chardonnay 2012 – which was also recently awarded five stars by the 2014 Platter’s Guide to South African Wine – had the special hon our of being ranked among the Top 20. It is the first time that a South African wine has achieved this and proprietor Anthony Hamilton Russell (above left, with winemak er Hannes Storm), is extremely proud of his team. It is also unheard of for a producer to achieve two ratings on this prestigious list – the Hamilton Russell Vineyards Char donnay 2012 was ranked number 19 and the Ashbourne Sandstone 2008 was number 71. The Top 100 wines are chosen annually from a lineup of more than 17 000 wines from around the world that are reviewed during the course of the year. Only one other South African wine made it on the list at number 93.

NEW LOOK: The Hermanus police station is being revamped inside and out. The renovations will con tinue until March 2014 and residents will be happy to hear that the faded pink exterior colour of the the police station will now change to a beige/ cream colour. All the offices too are being repaint ed, with new flooring and new plumbing pipes and systems being put in place. The cells have also been modernised. PHOTOS: JANINE VAN DER RIET

The driveway and backyard of the police station will also be tarred. The police ask that eve ryone be patient while the ren ovations are taking place.

Keep Whale Coast FM on air Whale Coast FM, the Overstrand’s very own community radio station, turns five in December. Who would have thought that a conversation around a braai in 2007 would lead to the issuing of a five-year licence from the Independent Broadcasting Authority of South Africa (Icasa) the following year, said John Mathew, the station’s director. With some timely grant funding from the Media Diversity and Development Agency (MDDA), the first on-air studio was built at Village Square. Since December 2008, for 18 hours every day, Whale Coast FM has been the rhythm of the Overstrand. With two transmitters, one above Hawston, the other above Hermanus Heights, WCFM broadcasts from Hangklip to Pearly Beach. “Catering to the needs of a diverse community like that of the Overstrand isn’t always easy, but our eclectic mix of Afrikaans, English and isiXhosa programming seems to have struck a happy balance for all our listeners,” said Mathew. “This is certainly reflected by the many

calls the station and its presenters receive daily. However, calls offering criticism or suggestions are not only gladly received, but invited on air, as they help us fine-tune the station.” The time has now come for WCFM to renew its broadcast licence as well as to refurbish some and replace other pieces of equipment and to carry out general maintenance. Unlike the national broadcaster, the SABC, Whale Coast FM receives no licence fees or other official sustenance for this purpose. The station has to fund itself, and does so with the committed support of local businesses. However, even this support does not cover all of the expenses of keeping a radio station on air and functioning for 18 hours a day. WCFM is launching a fundraising campaign, starting on Friday 29 November, to guarantee its future. Tune in to 96 or 96.2 FM – and help by donating in cash, via bank deposit or EFT, or use the handy ‘donate now’ button on www.whalecoastfm.co.za Banking details: Breakthrough Adventures, Nedbank Hermanus, 1345044585. This year the horticultural group, which visited Fernkloof on 12 November, has shifted its focus to the Hawston Children’s Marimba Band and the donation made will go towards buying their own Marimba set which costs R35 000. Up until now the band, under the keen influence of marimba band instructor Anne-

marie Kotze since 2004, has used the set which belongs to the Enlighten Eduation Trust. At the event guests, who also included Mayor Nicolette BothaGuthrie and representatives from Harold Porter Botanical Gardens and Enlighten, were welcomed by the Marimba players. EDITORIAL COMMENT ATM fraud a reality We have preached about this topic many times in different articles, but still there are innocent, soft targets being besieged by people with no conscience, who steal other people’s hardearned money. Many of us feel we’ve heard it all before and pay little heed when the police warn us to be vigilant and wary when drawing money – but it is the truth. Next time you visit an ATM, first look around you. Are there any suspicious looking people about? Is there a security guard nearby? Does the bank have surveillance cameras focused on the ATM? It is a bit of a mystery as to how exactly thieves use skimming devices to gain access to your money after you leave the ATM, but one thing is for sure – you should always look around, make sure nobody is lurking about and do not ever ask for help. Rather ask a friend or family member to go with you. If you need assistance, go into your bank and ask the staff to help you. The closer it gets to the festive season, the more desperate and careless thieves are becoming. Take care of yourself, and your money.

Understand our rights In response to the reaction of Thamie Poni and Bobby von During to my letter (“Who and from where are the marchers?” Hermanus Times 21 November) just the following: The gentlemen refer to the Constitution regarding the freedom of movement (Art.21:1). Precisely my point: If people are not happy with what they get from the (DA) provincial and local government, they are free to go to any ANC-governed province. The Constitution also says: “Everyone has the right, peacefully and unarmed, to assemble, to demonstrate, to picket and to present petitions.” (Art.17) They are, however, not free to engage in riotous, destructive and criminal behaviour. What is more, the Constitution guarantees “the right to have access to adequate housing” (26.1). Nowhere does the Constitution guarantee any right to free housing. If that were the case, then every present homeowner can claim payback of the full amount of their house from government – that is the consequence of reading free into the Constitution. The argument that government provides Municipal Infrustructure Grant (MIG) funding for the upgrading of informal settlements, is even more condemning on the riotous behaviour of the marchers. Why protest against a local government, if it is the state who fails to provide sufficient funding? And yes, I am “worried about the plight of fellow South Africans and the atrocious conditions they are living under.” But no, I don’t think that swamping one province is the answer. We need to develop, in every sense, the province where the needs of these people are not being met. The Eastern Cape, for one, has everything needed to provide massive economic growth, and all the benefits accruing from that. Why should people go elsewhere, live under atrocious conditions, wait long for housing, have to resort to begging – just because that province is being mal-governed?

‘Empower the disempowered in our midst’ Despite the typical vitality, spontaneity and goodwill that prevail among the dwellers of present-day South African townships, the danger is very real that many of these impoverished, overcrowded and ever-expanding areas may develop into sprawling, crime-ridden and out-of- control ghettoes. Zwelihle, our local township, is no exception as it continues to experience a constant influx, mostly from the Eastern Cape. The worrying factor is that most of these daily arrivals are cash-strapped and without homes or employment awaiting them at this end. But if one wishes to gain some perspective in this regard, one needs to be willing to confront some uncomfortable realities: An Eastern Cape citizen who has a stable income, lives in a house with running water and electricity, and has basic amenities such as schools, clinics and shops within reach, is unlikely to get onto a bus or taxi, in the hope of finding a better life elsewhere. The fellow South African, who arrives from

Thanks to helpful officials Having lived in the Bahamas for close to 13 years I have become accustomed to tropical storms and hurricanes, and the ins and outs of preparing for the onslaught and aftermath. With the recent rain storms we experienced in Hermanus it reminded me of those times but what I found challenging this time was the fact that I was not prepared. In the Bahamas stores would be open until late hours providing people with all the necessary equipment they needed to barricade and seal off doors and windows to prevent flooding from the approaching storms. With our tenants already having water gushing into their apartment I felt hopeless and all I could do was carry over as many towels and quilts to try and soak up as much water as possible. When the rain started to subside on Sunday morning my husband and I jumped into our car to get gumboots and a can of sealant to try and prevent more water from rushing into the apartment. It was by God’s grace that Jared from Agrimark picked up the phone and agreed to wait for us to purchase these items. Sadly the water levels were too high for the sealant to work leaving me with a feeling of hopelessness until I heard the sound of a pump in the neighbourhood. I drove around like a crazy woman following the pump sounds, turning my car off to pin point the direction until I found Overstrand Fire and Rescue helping out

the Eastern Cape, is more likely to be an impoverished person with limited skills, someone who finds himself deprived of opportunities and means to break out of his cycle of desperation. Despite my natural inclination towards positivity, I have come to consider South Africa a desperate place, a country in need of a drastic turnabout strategy if it is to succeed in the long term. Twenty years down the line it has become obvious to me that the government, in many ways, has neither the ability, nor the capacity, to do justice to the hopes and dreams of the township dwellers, and in particular the youths, among whom I worked extensively for many years. My hope is invested in the empowered South African who constantly reaches out to his fellowmen. As I see it, whether our motive is altruistic or self-survival, a turnabout will only come about if we all endeavour to empower the disempowered in our midst.

THEO DE WET

Having lived in Hermanus for more than 20 years and taking a keen interest in those less fortunate than myself, I have come to the conclusion that the NG Kerk Hermanus is an amazing organisation that is run by true Christians who make a real difference. I am not a member of this church, but I would like to express my whole-hearted support to Santie, the social worker, who, by charging the needy a very nominal fee for clothes, is allowing them to keep their dignity and to develop a sense of responsibility. This fee then goes towards helping other good causes, like meals for the aged and the homeless. Thank you to all those caring people at the NG Kerk who make a positive difference and to all the citizens of our lovely town, please support them with any unwanted clothes and other goods.

To the people from the house who came out to watch and told my mother of 80 to stop shouting for help and to “help yourself lady’, your unkindness still stuns me.

Oosie gets the job done

Dentist’s magic touch

On Sunday 17 November I was treated to some top-drawer service beyond the normal call of duty, and experienced something about staff attitudes and relationships from the people of Hermanus Supa Quick. The story goes like this: On Sunday morning I was stuck. The car wouldn’t start, the battery having given up the ghost overnight. It is five years old, after all. On Saturday evening I thought a problem was looming, but hoped to survive through Sunday until Monday. I tested the cells. No doubt, a new battery was required. So now what to do? It was Sunday – nobody is open! Ah, maybe Julie Minnaar knew someone; she’s been in the business. So I phoned her and told her the problem. “I need a new battery. Do you know if anyone is open?” Julie said she would SMS me someone’s number. Then my cellphone went; it showed “Ooswald’s number”. He must be the technician, I thought. I phoned the number, got a message to leave a message, and did so. Shortly thereafter, a man phoned about the message and I told him my need. He said he’s just entering church, can I hang on for an hour until 10 o’clock. I said OK. Just over half an hour later I saw a vehicle outside my gate and a tall, big guy approaching. I’d seen him before, at Supa Quick, but he’s not the battery technician – he owns the place. He is the grootbaas! It was Ooswald Oosthuizen himself, but why so quickly? It turned out that his wife also received a message during the service to attend to a medical case. They were in church just down the road, so they came via my place, picked me up, dropped her off to attend to her case, took me to Supa Quick, got the battery and tools, produced the invoice, accepted the payment then back to my house to exchange the batteries. Job done! So there you have it. The staff relationship allows Julie to feel free to involve Ooswald the boss/owner to go fix my problem on a Sunday. Ooswald himself has created the enabling climate, and effectively dealt with his wife’s call-out, and my need, wasting no time, making no fuss. The jobs got done, and the rest of the staff could enjoy their Sunday. That’s first class, Julie, Ooswald, and Supa Quick. Real quick. I thank you.

I’m 71 and have been terrified of dentists for as long as I can remember. At last, after having eight teeth extracted and dentures made by Dr Mickey Fauel, all my fears have been dispelled. His touch is magic. Thanks Doc!

Dankie, verkeersafdeling Ek moes onlangs my bestuurslisensie by die Hermanus-verkeersafdeling hernu. Nogmaals dankie.

) When will the debate about the Animal Wel fare Shop end? I am entitled to my personal opinion, now give it up. Kom tog reg Herma nus. Petri hou asseblief daai windpomp net daar. – DEBBIE GERSTNER ) There are lots of positive comments from fo reign tourists, day visitors and happy residents. Great not to have parking marshals breathing down our necks. Hope this can stay forever. Happy CBD business owner. (Ed. see article on page 3) – HAPPY CBD BUSINESS OWNER ) There is never a “Focus On” for Onrus busi nesses. Does the Hermanus Times know where it is, or don’t they want to venture over the brid ge? Veral

hierdie jaar. Almal praat daaroor. – RIANA ) How disgusting that the new minimum wage for domestic workers is between R9,63 and R11,27 per hour. This is a wage designed to leave people destined to the inhuman cycle of poverty. ) Is management at Woolworths really serious that you have to park for a minimum of two hours free or face a fine for exceeding that? Their sign says so. ) What’s up with the man that sits on the bench in front of Pick n Pay every day? Of enige ander raad is welkom. – CORNÉ ) Still missing: our practice’s cat Rita (calico) went missing last Friday night during the storm. She is sorely missed by all at Walkerbay Vet Clinic (Industrial area). Hou so aan.– GIEPIE ) The best seafood platter in town is at Tipples in Onrus. Thank you for the good value. – COLIN

Oom Langfaan sê: Welcome to the party.

Stem vir plaaslike sanger MIXING AT THE TAY MODERN GALLERY: At the first Tay Modern Mix er on 13 November a gathering of invited guests enjoyed the op portunity to chat, sip lo cal wine and enjoy art and music in a relaxed atmosphere. Among Tay’s recent cuttingedge creations the one that grabbed the most attention was the Mandela Talisman, a nearly 3 metre wide ex plosion of colour and creative imagination that Tay completed this year as a commission for The Home Coming Revolution, a non profit organisation aimed at encouraging and assisting South Africans living abroad to re turn home.

Kevin Grant (left) from Ataraxia supplied his awardwinning wines which were enjoyed with great enthusiasm. Ataraxia hosts an impressive permanent collection of Tay’s works at their tasting room in the Hemelen Aarde Ridge. Here Kevin is seen chatting to Lorinda and Johan Pretorius.

Hokaai-groete Jou vriendin, Herma Loubser, in Bloemfontein.

Daihatsu Diva gets face-lift The Daihatsu Terios Diva heralded a new era for female motorists in South Africa: this was the first vehicle that catered specifically to the needs of the fairer sex. Now the company has further upped the ante with the launch of the new Diva Deluxe. According to the general manager of Daihatsu SA, Pedro Perreira, the Diva has been extremely well received by women in South Africa, who welcomed the concept of a car designed for woman drivers with open arms and chequebooks. “It is common knowledge that women in South Africa represent a substantial – and growing – market. The Daihatsu Terios Diva, and its successor, the new Diva Deluxe, are catering specifically to the needs of that highly selective and intuitive market,” he notes. Perreira explains that there is another reason behind the launch of the Diva Deluxe as well. “The sports utility (SUV) market is one

of the most active sectors of the South African marketplace, with dozens of competitors within this segment. It is important to set yourself apart in this sector, and to offer an innovative package…something that is unique and truly special within this segment,” he explains. And that’s precisely what the new Diva Deluxe achieves: it represents an innovative and highly targeted vehicle quite unlike anything else on the market. While the Daihatsu Diva was quite the good looker, the Diva Deluxe is even more likely to turn heads – thanks to a number of exterior enhancements. The most obvious is the colour of the exterior decals and interior stitching. With the Diva, only one colour was available: orange. Now customers can choose from one of four colours: pink, turquoise, black and white. The new Diva Deluxe decals on the vehicle’s exterior then come in that colour, as does the interior stitching.

GWM’s dashing new C20r offers local car buyers an exciting new crossover-themed option in the compact hatchback segment. Its trendy design and feature-packed cabin are not the only attractions; the C20r is the first gwm to be offered with a 3-year/45 000 km service plan as standard. Exterior design Based on the company’s popular C10 hatchback, the C20r can be easily distinguished by its striking new front grille and air-dam design with integrated foglamps, black wheelarch liners, roof rails and SUV-themed front and rear skid plates in a contrasting silver colour. The C20r comes standard with 16-inch alloy wheels and, with a ground clearance of 172 mm, is not only well suited to the rough and tumble of city driving, but also the occasional gravel road on the way to the weekend geta-

way. The C20r will be offered locally in a range of exciting colours, including fashionable orange, ocean blue, maple red, pearl black, sky silver and titanium white. Comfort and entertainment Quality, luxury features and flexibility are not always the norms in the compact car segment, but the C20r has all those bases covered, and more. The driver’s seat is adjustable for height and so is the steering wheel, ensuring that a comfortable driving position is easily attainable. Air-conditioning, electric power steering, electric window and mirror adjustment, remote audio controls, height-adjustable headlamps, rear-park assist and a radio/CD/MP3 sound system with auxiliary and USB inputs are all part of the package too.

DOUBLE-CAB: TAKE ANOTHER LOOK AT THIS ONE FOR VALUE

Triton bakkie has it all, and for less FRANS LE ROUX If there ever was the perfect allround South African vehicle, it would certainly be the double-cab bakkie. The humble bakkie, as we fondly named it, has been around for close on 40 years. It’s the kind of vehicle that can do just about anything. One can fill it with five adults, load their luggage and hitch a caravan, or you can take it on some rugged 4X4 course. Then there is the side that one often forgets – a bakkie is a fine long-distance open-road cruiser and these days they all look great, even in the parking lot of a fancy hotel or mall. The latest offering from Mitsubishi was recently released onto the South African market and I spent a couple of days behind the wheel of their Triton double-cab 4X4 diesel. The Triton has always been the odd one out, with a strangely shaped rear and a smiling grille in the front. Let’s start off with the new diesel engine. Gone is the old 3,2 4-cylinder, which is now replaced by a 2,5 highpower unit. The old 3,2 produced 118 kW/343 Nm, while the new engine now pushes out 131 kw/400 Nm. Fuel consumption has also improved, with the new Triton averaging at about 9 litres/100 km. On a full 75 litre fuel tank, a theoretical tank range of 700 km could be achieved if driven carefully. The new 2,5 highpower unit you will only find in the 4X4. The engine surprises with its quietness and open road cruising ability. With 400 Nm, overtaking and steep hills seemed no match for the Triton. The Triton’s ride on both tar and gravel is surprisingly smooth. It truly glides over potholes or badly rutted gravel road. The quietness inside

On the outside, looking in? The new affordable Triton doublecab has a powerful 2.5 turbo diesel engine that offers more grunt but uses less fuel.

the cabin was also impressive. With no wind or engine noise, it doesn't sound like your “normal” bakkie. On the inside things have been greatly improved as well. A new multifuction steering wheel fits snugly into your hands. The centre console has also received a upgrade with the likes of climate control, and a useful USB-slot mounted on the CD-player. The driver's seat is fully electronically adjustable and both front seats offers good support. At the back, pas-

sengers sit in comfortable positions. Leg- and headroom are ample – no complaints from these departments. Aesthetically the Triton does not disappoint, although from the rear it looks kind of strange, with an angular hip-line. The loading bay is certainly not the largest in the segment either. One of the prettier upgrades from the previous model is the new chunky 17-inch wheels. Chrome door handles and roll bar are optional. From the front it shares genes

with its Pajero Sport sibling. This is in fact the best angle when you look at it. Being a bakkie, and a double cab at that, the rivals for the Triton include the Toyota Hilux, Isuzu KB, VW Amarok and the Ford Ranger. These five bakkies (including the Triton) make up the biggest chunk of our current market leaders. The Triton 4X4 diesel retails for R419 900, while the Ranger sells for R467 600. You can buy the Hilux for R441 000,

the Amarok for R459 500 or the Isuzu for R464 400. The Triton is the lowest priced, so certainly deserves more sales. It drives well, has a strong engine and is capable on all surfaces. With a 3 year/100 000 km warranty and a 5 year/90 000 km service plan (4X4 only), the new Triton should certainly be on your shopping list. 24 Hermanus Times Qashqai: the original crossover reinvented 28 November, 2013

QUICKPIC Nissan’s Qashqai has been the leader in the crossover market, with more than two million units produced since 2007. It appeals to both C-segment drivers looking for style, technology and excitement and to downsizing buyers seeking greater efficiency. The all-new Qashqai is set to enhance Nissan’s crossover leadership position when it goes on sale in selected global markets from January 2014. Premium technology, second-generation crossover design and enhanced dynamics all combine to form the backbone of the new Nissan Qashqai. The striking new Qashqai is 49 mm longer than the current model and fractionally lower and wider, giving it a sleek, poised stance while maintaining the crossover style, compact dimensions and raised driving position. Distinctive features – including a clamshellstyle bonnet – give it striking good looks while retaining the Qashqai’s strong visual DNA. As with any new Nissan, the Qashqai is packed with innovative technology enhancing every aspect of driving. Nissan’s Safety Shield technologies now incorporate Front Collision Avoidance, Driver Attention Support and Traffic Sign Recognition along with several other vital driver aids, while Intelligent Park Assist takes the stress out of urban manoeuvres. The new Qashqai is designed to make premium technology more accessible than ever. Innovation continues with the new Qashqai’s powertrain range, which is wider and more efficient than ever. Every engine uses a turbocharger to reduce capacity, emissions and fuel consumption while maintaining excellent performance, with class-leading CO² emissions, from only 99g/km. Efficiency is further enhanced by an extensive mass reduction programme, resulting in a 40kg weight loss on some models despite the

extensive addition of new equipment. While FWD variants will account for the majority of sales, four-wheel drive ALL-MODE 4x4-i versions will match a choice of six-speed manual or Xtronic transmissions. Inside, a dramatic rise in material and de-

sign quality adds significant interior appeal to the Qashqai package. Versatility also remains a core crossover attribute; Nissan has devised innovative ways to make the new Qashqai fit into drivers’ lives. Greater occupant space and a larger luggage

capacity enhanced by a variable floor system, in the new Qashqai even offers space to store the parcel shelf when not in use. The new Qashqai is based on the new RenaultNissan Alliance platform, bringing outstanding engineering efficiencies to the consumer.

Impey to drive Outback to races QUICKPIC South African cyclist Daryl Impey, who painted the nation’s name all over the 2013 running of the Tour de France, has returned home after his 2013 international season to tackle the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge as a fund-raising event for local charity, Teddy Bear Clinic. Having sponsored funds towards his efforts, Subaru Southern Africa has also provided Impey with a Subaru Outback Diesel CVT. Having won the second stage of the 2013 Tour de France and subsequently worn the yellow leader’s jersey through stages six and seven as well, Impey continues Subaru Southern Africa’s ties to cycling after Robbie Hunter made use of the all-new Subaru Forester during the Mzansi Tour, earlier in the year. Comments Subaru Southern Africa Marketing Manager, Ashley Lazarus: “Charity is something that touches the hearts and minds of everyone and every little bit counts. We are only too proud to be associated with Daryl in this regard and are certain that the funds he raises for Teddy Bear Clinic will be put to good use. We also wish him the very best of luck for the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge this weekend!” The Subaru Outback 2.0D Pre-

mium Lineartronic™ features the world’s only Boxer® diesel engine, the horizontally-opposed turbocharged motor producing 110 kW and 350 Nm. Mated to Subaru’s famous Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive™ system via Lineartronic™ CVT automatic transmission, the vehicle’s superior drivetrain balance and permanent all-wheel drive system make it relaxing to drive and extremely capable, especially off-road. Coupled to exemplary specifications which include luxurious extras like keyless access and starting, a sunroof, easily foldable roof rails, dual-zone climate control and an electric driver’s seat, the Outback Diesel CVT offers value and versatility underlined by Subaru’s legendary reliability, safety and durability reputation. “Our link to the world of cycling comes thanks to our vehicles’ ultimate practicality levels, and carrying bicycles easily is just one of their many attributes. The new Subaru Outback Diesel CVT is even more suited to the task, whereby its innovative roof rails which include built-in foldable cross bars to eliminate the need for an additional roof rack, make roof-mounted bicycle transport a practical and easy affair, with the vehicle’s mechanical merits coming to the fore to present an overall relaxing driving experience,” concludes Lazarus.

DOGS get wily as they prepare for final battle Theewaterskloof – As is customary at this time of year, just two weeks before the annual international battle to end all battles, there was a certain amount of handicap massaging, hiding lights under bushels, keeping powder dry, not shooting until you could see the whites of their eyes and brushing up on clichés on display. There was one notable exception though when the rookie RSA team captain, an exPoledancer, showed his inexperience by peaking a little too early.

Judging by some other scores, there were a lot of lights or some very large bushels. Score: 38 Andre Franken; 36 John Horobin; 34 Chris Martin; 33 John Tunstall, David Naylor, Dave Smith, Ian Newman, Quentin Mitchell,; 32 Malcolm Lazenby; 31 Alan Smith, Tony Hackett; 30 Hugh Frangs; 28 Peter Thomas; 27 Dave Brittain, Dave Rade, Roger (guest), Geoff Crowther, Peter Theron; 25 Jon Forsyth; 24 Mannes van Zyl; 23 John Cheesbrough; 21 Tony Jones; 20 Marc (guest); 10 Keith Gillott. – DAVE SMITH
