Poacher caught by visitors
Die verkeersknoop by die kruising van Hoof en Bergsigstraat in Sandbaai is veral erg in die oggende wanneer ou ers kinders by die skole in die area moet aflaai. FOTO: JAN-HENDRIK COETZER
ARRESTED: Due to the actions of a couple camping at Onrus Caravan Park, a poacher at Davies Pool was caught redhanded. Three officials from the Department of Fisheries ar rested the poacher and handed him over to the Hermanus Police.
Erge chaos met Sandbaaiverkeer JANHENDRIK COETZER
“Só kan dit nie aangaan nie. Die verkeer in Sandbaai as ek in die oggend my kind by die skool moet aflaai, raak net erger en erger.” Só sê ’n omgekrapte ouer wie se kind by Curro Hermanus op skool is. Volgens Curro Hermanus se skoolhoof, Hennie Mentz, is hierdie probleem reeds by Overstrand-munisipaliteit aanhangig gemaak.
So hierdie probleem gaan net vererger.”
Page 2

Annalise and Morné Putter witnessed the poacher on Sunday 18 January at around 18:00 while they were fishing off the rocks. They say: “We saw the poacher helping himself to some undersized abalone. Knowing that it is illegal, we shouted at him, but he ignored us.” After about 20 minutes, Annalise phoned the emergency number posted at Davies Pool, and was given the number of the Department of Fisheries. After an hour of making the call, officials arrived.
Morné assisted them in grabbing the man and he was handed over to Hermanus Police. “I feel very strongly about poaching, because when I was my son’s age (11) I used to take out huge abalone with my father in Gansbaai and my son has not yet even tasted abalone! I feel that if the community works with law enforcement, it will help put a thorn in the poachers’ side,” says Annalise. She emphasised that residents and visitors must know that the authorities will respond to reports of poaching – if they make the effort to inform them. According to Lieutenant Fadila September from the Hermanus Police, a 30-year-old man was arrested and appeared in the Hermanus Magistrate’s Court. “The case was postponed until 10 March for

A housekeeper from Zwelihle lost all her savings after she was scammed at an ATM at the Zwelihle taxi rank on Sunday afternoon. Albertina Lesiba, who works at a house in Westcliff, has been saving money in order to buy school books and clothing for her children. “I wanted to draw money, but my card got stuck in the machine. I could not get my
card out, and went to the bank on Monday as soon as it was open.” It was then discovered that more than R1 000 was stolen out of her bank account. She called the police and they met her at the ATM in Zwelihle. The policeman showed Lesiba scratch marks on the ATM, evidence that someone had fiddled with the machine. The Hermanus Police are investigating the incident.

WHY THE NSPCA OPPOSE WILD ANIMALS IN CIRCUSSES
The NSPCA is opposed to any degree of confinement or the use of any animal in sport, entertainment or exhibition likely to cause distress or suffering or which may adversely affect the animal's welfare. The NSPCA is totally opposed to exhibitions or presentations of wildlife in circuses and traveling menageries. Because cruelty to animals is inherent to such displays, we seek to end such uses of wild animals. We work to achieve this by increasing public awareness and strengthening legislation that protects captive wild and exotic animals.
AN INHUMANE EXISTENCE DAY AFTER DAY
Wild animals used in circuses and other travelling acts are routinely subjected to months on the road confined in small, barren cages or in chains. These animals then demonstrates stereotypic and abnormal behaviour patterns indicative to prolonged stress and suffering. It is the stress through the process of confinement and transportation that makes up the bulk of the animal's suffering ·Natural environments cannot be recreated in circuses. Complex environments cannot be set up in circuses because of frequent travelling and extremely small accommodation and exercise areas. Circus animals' live are inevitably impoverished. There is no scientific reason to believe that the natural needs of wild animals can be met through the living conditions and husbandry offered by circuses. ·The lack of appropriate social interaction, reduction in time spent foraging and the restricted freedom to perform natural behaviour represent stressors for captive animals. Stress can have short-term as well as long-term behavioural and psychological effects ·Circus animals travel frequently. Many features of travel, such as forced movement, human handling, noise, trailer movement and confinement constitutes sources of stress to captive animals ·Stereotypical behaviours (pacing, swaying etc) are indications of sub-optimal environments and indications of poorer welfare conditions. Captivity affects behavioural patterns and normal behaviour gives way to a higher percentage of inactivity and/or increased abnormal behaviour (self-directed behaviour or self-injury) and stereotypes. ·Performing inappropriate and unnatural tricks in the name of entertainment also does nothing to foster respect for animals ·Performing wild animals pose a real threat to public safety, precisely because they are wild and therefore unpredictable. No amount of training or affection can eliminate this danger ·Animals in circuses do not benefit any educational, conservational or scientific cause. 000000-HL290115

It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our beloved mentor and inspiration – Mrs M passed away peacefully on Saturday morning, 24th January 2015 at her home in Johannesburg.
She will be sorely missed by all of her family, friends and staff. Liz McGrath bought The Marine at the end of 1997 and managed to re-open it after a frantic 9 month renovation in October 1998. To date, there are over 15 staff members that opened the hotel with her all those years ago, still working at The Marine. Mrs McGrath was a proud ambassador of Relais & Chateaux and all three of her properties remain members of this illustrious organisation. Through Relais & Chateaux she was presented with the Women of the Year Award in 2008, the only woman in the world to have owned three hotels within Relais & Chateaux. Her passion for gardening also saw her recognised for many awards annually at the Cape Town Flower Show. Her Constantia based hotel, The Cellars-Hohenort ,garnered the Relais & Châteaux Garden Award in 2010 for it’s exceptional appearance. ‘If food be the music of life, play on!’ – this, for us, exemplifies her great passion and love for all things culinary! The Marine Hotel has a rich and diverse history, having seen many dynamic guests as well as owners since it was built in 1902. Under Mrs McGrath The Marine found a new lease on life it had never experienced before. This wonderful tradition will continue in the years to come in the capable hands of her children and family. After many memorable hours of poring through news and online articles, magazine interviews and the like, this final quote stood out as an epitome of the Mrs M that we knew and loved; “One of my greatest pleasures, is to see young people, often without formal training, like myself, to advance within the restaurant and hotel industry, which can take them anywhere in the world” Mrs M – we will miss you, God bless and your legend will live on in all of us! 000000-HL290115

Delegates visit clinic unannounced after complaints JANINE VAN DER RIET Good news in light of the complaints received from patients regarding the running of the newly built Hermanus Community Day Centre (CDC), is that they have extended their operational hours. The CDC is now open from 07:00 until 18:00, from Monday to Friday. These extended clinic hours were one of the solutions put in place to minimise the length of time that patients have to queue before being assisted. After the article in the Hermanus Times (“Patients run out of patience”, 15/01/2015) appeared, the national executive member of parliament, Masizola Mnqasela organised an unannounced visit to the facility on Tuesday 27 January. Mnqasela, accompanied by his colleague, MP Dr Michael John Cardo, the Overstrand Mayor Nicolette Botha-Guthrie, community leader Archie Klaas and other role-players, spoke to patients outside the CDC, to find out more about the problems experienced since this R38 million centre opened its doors earlier this year. The responses he received were conflicting – some positive and others negative. Afterwards the delegation went inside the CDC and it seemed they caught acting manager Carol Marais off-guard when the delegation made their intention clear that they would like to discuss certain issues regarding complaints. The biggest problem raised in the subsequent meeting was the appointment system at the clinic. Klaas explained to Mnqasela and Marais that patients wanting to see a nurse, had to wait for days before getting an appointment. “Some patients with serious conditions opted to go straight to the Herma-
nus Provincial Hospital to be helped, rather than being forced to wait a few days.” Mnqasela told Marais that the newly built centre is a primary service and people should be able to walk in from the street, with confidence, knowing they will be helped. Marais explained that the appointment system was put in place by her superiors. Mnqasela asked her to investigate the option of not having a booking system for all patients, and also to prioritise the patients’ conditions. Another concern from Mnqasela was that patients have to sit outside in the cold or heat while waiting their turn. When the Hermanus Times visited the clinic on 13 January, patients complained because they had to stand outside the gate as only 10 people at a time were let inside the premises to report at reception. Marais explained that they were not prepared for the big crowds when they opened. “The signs, showing patients where to go, were only put up on Monday 26 January. “During the opening week, we had to use a qualified nurse to re-route the people and control the masses.” In the meantime, the centre has put out chairs in the area where people have to wait before they are let through to the main building. This area is not covered with a roof, but the patients are now being helped more quickly and allowed into the reception area to book their appointments or see a doctor. The CDC sees about 230 patients a day. Marais says their staff , consisting of a full time doctor, two doctors working shifts, seven clinical nurse practitioners and five professional nurses, is adequate for now. Mnqasela thanked Marais for her time and her commitment to address the issues raised. He said the delegates plan to visit again.

Squatters near tennis court removed

KERRY VAN RENSBURG The slum area between the back wall of the Hermanus Clinic and the fence of the tennis courts, where a group of homeless people squat, has been the cause of many a raised eyebrow and deemed an “eyesore”. Les Abbot, chairperson of the Hermanus Night Shelter Association, says he has been aware of this particular problem since it arose almost six months ago, and met Neville Michaels, Overstrand director of protection services, to discuss the matter. Abbot suggested they close off the grassed backyard of the clinic grounds. He adds that he has no control over these squatters, as they are not part of the group of homeless people who regularly stay at the night shelter situated in the converted garages on the Hermanus Clinic property. Vic Hamilton Attwell, who has been a member of Hermanus Tennis Club for 14 years, and plays early in the mornings twice a week, has also raised concern about this informal slum area and the unsightly rubbish that is left lying around. Cllr Kari Brice, tasked to take care of this issue, says the slum area was fully cleaned up on Monday 26 January, and when law enforcement visited on Monday evening, it was reported that there was no-one loitering or sleeping there. She assures the public that law enforcement will be doing regular visits to the site. ) When the night shelter was in dire financial straits towards the end of last year, Abbot made a plea after a Sunday service at the United Church where an initial amount of R24 000 was raised, which has climbed to R35 000, with some people indicating that they will keep contributing to the project. Abbott says this is enough money to keep the shelter open until at least May. By then, as the main beneficiary of the 2015 Lighthouse 2 Lighthouse charity walk, the association will have enough money to begin building the new shelter on the property opposite the Waste Transfer Station in Swartdam Road. Abbot says the civils contractor is on site and excavating for the installation of services has already begun.

Don’t be left in the dark With more load-shedding on the cards, people are urged to exercise caution when using gas. Here are a few pointers to ensure safe usage: ) Gas cylinders must be filled or exchanged at a reputable dealer. “Cylinders which are illegally filled by someone other than those authorised by the brand owner, can be potentially hazardous,” says Kevin Robertson, chief executive officer of the Liquefied Petroleum Gas Safety Association of South Africa (LPGSASA). ) A cylinder should only be filled to 80 percent of its capacity. Anything above this means the consumer could be endangered. Anything below this means the consumer is being cheated. ) When purchasing a gas cylinder make sure the logo on the valve seal matches the logo on the cylinder. “If you purchase your own cylinder you are responsible for its maintenance and can grant permission to a filler to refill it for you. If you pay a deposit on a commercially branded cylinder, the brand owner retains ownership of the cylinder. The brand owner is responsible for the safe maintenance of it and can decide who may or may not fill it,” said Robertson. ) If the cylinders are located outdoors and are exchanged by a supplier or dealer who delivers them, the supplier should check that that everything is in good condition. “If the cylinders are disconnected and reconnected by the consumer, they should check that the bull nose or ‘o-ring’ is in place and not cracked or brittle. Also check that the hose is not perished, cracked or brittle. Have the appliance serviced on a regular basis,” said Robertson.

EDITORIAL COMMENT Traffic jam blues All motorists get hot under the collar when having to drive in hectic traffic. In Hermanus, we are blessed with “everything is just around the corner”. If you live ‘outside’ of Hermanus, say in Voëlklip or Onrus, motorists would say: “I am driving to town. So tell me what you need, because I am not driving all the way to town again.” This sentiment suggests you live on a farm hundreds of kilometres away from town. But yes, once you have settled here in Hermanus, one tends to forget about the two-hour traffic jams, to work and back, as is the case on the N1 and N2, not to mention what the Gautengers have to endure. We are not in the same league as that, thank goodness, but what is required for now, in Sandbaai, is a big dose of patience and a dollop of kindness to let cars through until a solution is found.

Poor, poor parents Druktyd by Daviespoel Sonder om honde-eienaars hul plesier te wil ontneem, raak ’n mens nogal knorrig as jy by ’n openbare ontspanningsplek in honde se hopies trap.
‘OOM KALLIE’, ONRUS
Dear primary school parents. My heart goes out to you. Parents and learners have a raw deal with schools. As a concerned and loving parent you take your child to school, you pay good money and now the teachers are to blame for all that is not perfect. Needless to say, as a parent you instilled self-worth, confidence and good values into your child. At home all is well. Father, mother, sib-
lings are all happy. You never discuss the “shortcomings” of the school and teachers in front of your child. As parents you are supportive of both your child and the school. Does this sound familiar? The fact of the matter is that teachers are overworked and underpaid. Pray for your child’s teacher and ask how you can help?

A VAN ZYL
Birds could be ‘banting’, but xylitol could be very dangerous to dogs In further response to the letter from Moira Walker who had wondered about whether swopping the sugar water in her bird bottle feeder with xylitol could have any negative effects, Leon Steyn, environmental specialist,
My heartfelt thanks to Safe Security who foiled an attempt to steal my car after I made a frantic call late last Sunday night. We left our car in the Hermanus CBD and took a taxi home on the Saturday night .The driver enquired if that was our car, which I found strange. On collection on Sunday I arrived in time to discover my car was a target of attempted theft. Two response cars from Safe arrived promptly. Thank you so much.
had answered that he could not see xylitol as a problem but added that he was sticking to sugar for his garden birds. Since then, Steyn investigated the use of xylitol and found that although the research
published on the internet does not refer to birds, it is stated that xylitol has been implicated in possible liver failure in dogs, which can be fatal.

Scammers pretend to sell Hermanus Times subscriptions JANINE VAN DER RIET Four people driving in a silver Hyundai with a CA registration were seen in Onrus on Friday 23 January pretending to sell Hermanus Times newspapers and subscriptions. When a vigilant resident, who the group had tried to scam, asked who they work for, they named a well-known independent market research company in Cape Town. The resident then phoned the Hermanus Times’ office to inform the circulation manager, Devon Marinus, that two men and two women, were driving around Onrus pretending to sell subscriptions to unsuspecting residents.
Marinus and another colleague quickly drove to Onrus to look for the suspects, but they had seemingly left the area. The incident was reported to the Hermanus Police. The Hermanus Times wants to make it clear that they do not have door-to-door subscription drives. Residents must be vigilant and phone the police if these scam artists reappear in the area. When enquiring with the market research company who the group alleged to be working for, their CEO and founder was just as surprised as the residents who were approached. Their company does not sell subscriptions, nor do they have people working in the area, the founder said.

Farewell to longserving nurses KERRY VAN RENSBURG We will miss you, but we send you off with joy and many good memories. Let integrity continue to fill your heart. Thank you for helping to build this hospital into what it is today. With these words, sister Maria Bailey paid tribute to the three nurses who were the guests of honour at a special farewell tea held in the board room of the Hermanus Provincial Hospital on Thursday 15 January. Jeanette Gillion retired from the hospital after serving as a nurse for 40 years and 7 months. Rhoda Jaars, with 17 years service and Desiree April, with just over 13 years, resigned from the hospital and have decided it is time to take a break from nursing in order to spend time with their families and to pursue other interests. Sister Bailey said Jeanette, and her two colleagues, were mentors to many of the nursing staff. Jeanette, who began her nursing career on 1 May 1974, said she worked at the hospital in the days when there was segregation and white and non-white patients were on different sides of the building. “It was an absolute honour to have worked here. I have seen doctors and nurses come and go and have many wonderful memories.” Jeanette shared some of these memories and stories of her years in the hospital, and especially in the

Hermanus FynArts 2015 promises even more Siblings on a violin and piano. A première by three professors on three pianos. And an Italian connection. Visitors to Hermanus FynArts 2015 will be treated to an eclectic mix of some of the best in a range of South African arts, promise the organisers. The event, a fusion of Arts Fest and Winter School, now in its third year, will run from 5-16 June. The opening concert will feature brother and sister Ammiel and Avigail Bushakevitz (born in Jerusalem, raised in South Africa and now living in Europe) as soloists with Camerata Tinta Barocca, a Cape Town based baroque ensemble. Violinist Avigail won first prize at the Unisa National Strings Competition, and numerous other awards. Pianist Ammiel drew international attention in 2013 when he was the first recipient of the Richard Wagner prize on the occasion of Wagner’s 200th birthday. Three Professors on Three Pianos is a première for Hermanus FynArts. Francois du Toit will perform with Franklin Larey and Albie van Schalkwyk, who has transcribed music for three pianos. And they will bring their own pianos with them. Albie, acknowledged as one of South Africa’s finest chamber musicians and music educators, is currently Associate Professor of Piano at the University of Cape Town and Head
of Chamber Music. Francois, a highly regarded soloist, has distinguished himself in South Africa and abroad since the age of 15. He is Associate Professor of Piano at UCT and Head of Practical Studies. Franklin, the third of these acclaimed UCT Associate Professors, has won several awards, including first prize at the 1991 Young Chang International Piano Competition. The Italian Connection From this year Hermanus FynArts will recognise the diverse origins of immigrants to South Africa. The programme will therefore include a number of events of one country’s contribution to the arts in general, as well as to South Africa and its way of life. In 2015 this FynArts initiative kicks off with the Italian Connection not only in art, but also in food, wine, vintage films and music. Professor Kamal Khan, also from UCT, will direct a Festival of Italian Music at FynArts 2015 with some of his most promising opera students. ‘Wine Plus’ series In 1980 award-winning South African winemaker Giorgio Dalla Cia produced one of South Africa’s first Bordeaux-style wines, Meerlust Rubicon. Since then he has established his own Grappa distillery in Stellenbosch in 1996. As part of the ‘Wine Plus’’ series of tutored tastings, festival goers will have the opportunity to

taste this famous Italian fortified wine with the master himself. In Italian Futurism (1909-1915) – art and architecture, one of the many FynArts talks, this period of Italian art will be discussed by Marilyn Martin, independent curator, writer and lecturer. Apart from celebrating this Ital-
ian art connection, eleven art galleries in Hermanus will each host an exhibition and there will be extra art venues, including the Old Synagogue, and three hotels. Wine and food In addition, there will be wine tasting and art exhibitions at a number of participating wine farms in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. One of the highlights here is the Tondi Exhibition of the finalists in the Tollman Bouchard Finlayson competition. The fine art of food will be celebrated throughout the festival, including a gala dinner at Bona Dea Private Estate in the Hemelen-Aarde Valley. In a Pop-up Festival Kitchen at the Windsor Hotel top chefs will give twice daily demonstrations, organised by chef Garth Stroebel. ) Visit www.hermanusfynarts.co.za. The full programme will be loaded by the end of February. For enquiries contact: Festival Director: Mary Faure at fynarts@hermanus.co.za or Media Editor: Colleen Naudé at colleen.naude@gmail.com

NATURE MATTERS Did you know... The highly endangered Cape platanna (Xenopus gilli) is endemic to the extreme southwestern Cape coast. It is a lowaltitude species occurring within 10 km of the coast. It is found only in black, acid water in Cape fynbos heathland. If water bodies dry up it aestivates (“hibernates” un derground). It does not tolerate alteration of its habitat and the tadpoles are very sen sitive to changes in water quality. The main threats are habitat loss due to urbanisation, agricultural runoff and the effects of spreading alien plants. It is also threaten ed by hy bridisa tion with the com mon pla tanna, (X. laevis). The Cape platanna is highly endan gered. PHOTO: WWW.ARKIVE.COM

Hermanus hockey players help win silver
The Overberg was recently issued with a PSI (Pro Series Indoor) hockey franchise called PSI Overberg Badgers, which is being run by Darryl Christians. In December the Overberg Badgers entered three teams in the PSI Nationals played at the University of Cape Town, and only had a month to prepare. Hockey players from regions across SA participated in this tournament. A total of 18 players from schools in Hermanus were included in this tournament, across all age groups. Teams entered included:
u. 14 Boys – came 6th from 16 teams; u. 18 Girls – came 5th from 8 teams; u. 18 Boys – came second out 8 teams. PSI is an indoor hockey concept that consists of leagues, regional, all stars and national tournaments. They cater for both girls and boys for age groups from u. 11 to u. 18. The aim of the organisation is to grow the sport of indoor hockey at school level. A four-week PSI hockey training programme will be offered on Saturdays by the Overberg League at Hermanus High School from 7 February to 7 March.
