APPEAL PERIOD NOW OPEN: PUBLIC DISCUSSION FORUM ON 4 FEBRUARY
Proposed malls:Have your say HEDDA MITTNER Public opinion is divided about the desirability of the new proposed shopping mall in Sandbaai and residents are invited to give their input at a discussion forum scheduled to take place on Tuesday 4 February. The proposals for two developments – the Whale Coast Village Mall in Sandbaai and the Overberg Mall in Hawston – gained partial environmental authorisation on 3 January, subject to a period of appeal. Appellants had 20 days in which to lodge notification of their intent to appeal, and the appeal must be lodged within 30 calendar days after the lapsing of the 20-day period. Both the Hermanus Ratepayers Association and the Hermanus Business Chamber lodged an intention to
appeal against the granting of environmental authorisation to Retail Africa for the Whale Coast Village Mall in Sandbaai on 23 January, after requests from some of their members. However, inputs from the business community must be processed before a final appeal with motivation can be submitted on or before the deadline of 24 February, says Alta Pretorius, CEO of the Hermanus Business Chamber (HBC). To this end, the executive committee of the HBC has decided to grant an opportunity for public participation in the form of a discussion forum on Tuesday 4 February at 17:30 in the Whale Coast Conference Room (above Checkers). There is no cost involved, but those wishing to attend are advised to book by Monday 3 February, as space is limited, by contacting Pretorius on 073 538 3685.

“From the feedback received so far, most members are against the development of the Sandbaai mall, some are for it and some are impartial,” says Pretorius. “Yes, the mall will have its advantages, as we’ll no longer have to travel over the mountain to buy certain products or to see a movie,” says Petrus Hendriksz, who heads the CBD Revitalisation Project. “But those advantages will come at a cost. As a businessman in the CBD, I predict that 25% to 30% of the buying power in town will shift to the mall, and many businesses in the CBD will not make it.” Hendriksz says the proposed tenant mix of the mall is crucial and Grant McLachlan, chairperson of the Hermanus Ratepayers Association (HRA), agrees. “There should be certain restrictions to ensure that the retail tenants
of the mall do not pose a threat to current retail outlets in the CBD. We have already seen the detrimental impact that the Checkers and Woolworths developments, and the new ring road [Royal Street] have had on other parts of the CBD. “There is always a risk involved when a shopping centre such as the proposed Whale Coast Village Mall is developed in such close proximity to a CBD. What is of concern to us here is the health of the CBD and how a balance can be struck. The CBD is the heart of Hermanus and we need to look at measures that might be taken to ensure that it stays that way.” Traffic consultant and vice chair of the HRA, Bob Stanway, says the Overstrand Municipality should take this opportunity to prioritise the revitalisation of the CBD and to ensure that it remains a desirable destination for both tourists and resi-
dents. “We need a magnet to keep the CBD alive,” he says. “Many studies have been done over the years with recommendations for transforming the CBD into a safe, healthy and eco-friendly urban environment, but they have never been implemented. Now is the time to act – before the mall becomes a reality.” The president of the Chamber, Mervyn Milner, is inviting people to attend if they have strong views to express, or simply need to be informed. A presentation will be done, whereafter the attendees will have the opportunity to state their views regarding the proposed establishment of the Whale Coast Village Mall. For more details on the restrictions and motivation for the environmental authorisation for the proposed development, see page 2.

New contractor for R320 road project HEDDA MITTNER A new contractor was appointed on Wednesday by the Department of Transport and Public Works to complete the R320 roadworks project after the previous contractor, Vusela Construction, was placed under liquidation by the Western Cape High Court in December last year.

Brink and Heath, a construction and civil engineering company based in Cape Town, will resume construction within the next week or two, says Anton Nell, senior operations manager of the Department of Transport and Public Works. Work on the project to upgrade the R320 between Caledon and Hermanus was scheduled for completion in September 2014, but the roadworks came to a complete standstill in the first week of November last year. According to Nell, it will take 15 months to complete the project and the new comple-
tion date is May 2015. This extra delay is due to damage caused by the heavy floods in mid-November last year, followed by another bout of heavy rain in the first week of January. Repair work will need to be carried out first where parts of the newly prepared road were washed away by the floods. A meeting took place on Tuesday between representatives of Brink and Heath and the roadworkers, many of whom were stranded without an income less than two months before Christmas last year. According to Anthony Wells, spokesperson for the workers, Brink and Heath will be re-employing most of the workers and are also appointing new workers from the Caledon area. Wells says the workers, who received their last pay cheques at the end of October, have submitted claim forms for their November and December salaries. They were informed that it could take 9 to 12 months before they receive the money.
Roadworkers from the local community of Caledon who had been employed by Vusela Construction gathered at the Caledon police station in January to fill in claim forms for their unpaid wages after Vusela went into liquidation. Most of them have now been re employed by the new contractor, Brink and Heath. PHOTO: ANETTE THERON

Spotlight on Sandbaai beach
3
HEDDA MITTNER Several letters and SMSes have been sent to the Hermanus Times in recent weeks to complain about the maggots and stench on Sandbaai beach caused by a build-up of kelp and a decomposing seal carcass. A reader from Sandbaai, Margaret Bonsall, said she agreed with Johan Maree (Sandbaai beach has become ‘unbearable’, Hermanus Times, 16 January 2014) that the kelp and seaweed on the beach is no longer removed on as regular a basis as before. “However, as much as the kelp can be an eyesore, he also remarked about the maggots – which were teeming on the beach. I go there regularly, and the cause of the maggots was the carcass of a dead seal.” According to Bonsall, the seal washed up on the beach on or around 8 January and at least four phone calls were made to the municipality to remove the carcass. “But nothing was done,” she says. “Two days later the dead seal was ‘buried’ under a pile of sand, and consequently the maggots appeared. “Although the kelp is unsightly, it does not present a health hazard – but the dead seal, along with the maggots, could certainly become a risk to one’s health. Surely there should be someone appointed to monitor the state of the beaches?” Repeated queries by Hermanus Times to the Overstrand Municipality regarding the dead seal went unanswered, but the senior manager of environmental services, Liezl Bezuidenhout, says area management under the community services directorate do attend to dead animals on the beach. “The public can contact the Overstrand Control Room at 028 313 8111 with specific information on the location and type of dead animal/carcass, and this information will be forwarded to the appropriate operational manager.” Bezuidenhout also says it is the municipality’s policy not to remove kelp from beaches in the Overstrand area. “Kelp is only moved – note, not removed – from the three Blue Flag beaches during the Blue Flag season. The kelp is only moved away from the beach up towards the foot of the back dunes by staff of Working for the Coast. This is an Expanded Public Works (EPW) programme funded by the Department of Environmental Affairs.” Bezuidenhout says there are several reasons for not disturbing the kelp that washes up on beaches: ) Kelp plays an important part in dune formation and erosion processes along the coastline. “If all kelp is removed, large volumes of sand are freed from the shoreline and are blown into the secondary dune system, stifling climax vegetation. In many cases this means more windblown sand on parking areas, roads and coastal pathways; ) Washed up kelp is also an important component of the nutrient cycle because it serves as a food source for molluscs, invertebrates and protozoa. “Where kelp is removed, the food source for beach fauna is rapidly reduced, thereby having a detrimental impact on the food web, both on the beach and the adjacent sea currents.” Bezuidenhout adds that this does not mean the municipality is not willing to identify swimming beaches additional to the three
A reader took this photo of a dead seal that washed up on Sandbaai beach around 8 January, surrounded by kelp and mag gots. By 18 January the carcass had de composed and all that was left were its skull and a few bones – and there was no sign of the maggots. “It was a gruesome sight, but I suppose it was probably thought that it wouldn’t be noticed amongst the piles of kelp that were accumulating,” the reader says.

Blue Flag beaches where kelp can be moved away from the beach, but a management plan for this purpose will have to be developed by the community services directorate in collaboration with the environmental section and submitted to the Marine and Coastal Management branch of the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism for approval. “The municipality will also have to investigate the cost related to specific activities and available capacity before such a beach-cleaning policy can be developed and implemented,” says Bezuidenhout. While visitors to Sandbaai beach have expressed their disapproval of the poor condition of the beach, Ina van Rooyen, committee member of the Onrus Ratepayers Association (ORA), who heads the association’s portfolio for neatness, says they have received nothing but compliments from holidaymakers on the cleanliness of Onrus beach. “We work hand-in-hand with the municipality to keep the town and beach clean and inviting for residents and visitors,” Van Rooyen says. She manages a team of workers who are paid by ORA to supplement the work done by the municipal contractor for Onrus and Vermont. “It’s a team effort,” says Van Rooyen. “We help to keep the beach and the streets neat and litter-free, and if there is a build-up of kelp on the beach, as happens after violent storms, we collect it and move it away from the main beach area. This is why it is so important for residents to pay their R100 annual ORA membership fee, as it enables us to do our work.” Deon Beukes, chairperson of the Sandbaai Ratepayers Association (SRA), says one of the items on the agenda of their next meeting is the maintenance of Sandbaai beach, its access roads and the parking area. “It’s a beautiful little beach,” he says, “and we want residents and visitors to be able to enjoy it. However, funding remains a problem, and the various processes and procedures that have to be followed by the municipality take a long time. But we are looking at ways to speed up the process.”
MAKING A DIFFERENCE: Stanley Shava (left) and Peter Nyambo are the two workers re sponsible for keeping Onrus in a pristine condi tion throughout the year. FIRE AT SHOPPING CENTRE: A fire broke out on the first floor in a store room at the Woolworths centre on Fri day. A waterproofing contractor was torching the balcony on the outside of the first floor to seal it when he saw a hole in the wall leading from the balco ny to the storeroom. The next moment he saw smoke, as the torching had caused the inside of the storeroom to set alight. According to Angelo Aplon, Hermanus fire and rescue station com mander, the centre is fully compliant with safety regulations and fire extin guishers were nearby, which helped the workers to extinguish the fire and pre vent further damage. “People must make sure their fire extinguishers are regularly serviced and fitted according to regulations.” Noone was injured during the fire, which was quickly brought under control.

‘People lose cases because of interpretation’ JANINE VAN DER RIET Magistrate Preggy Govender, vice-president of the Judicial Officers Association of South Africa and also working at the Hermanus Magistrate’s Court, attended the annual general conference of judicial officers at Kopanong in Johannesburg on 24 and 25 January, where he said the information received at the conference was important to the residents of Hermanus. Chief Justice of South Africa, Mogoeng Mogoeng, who led the conference, criticised the standard of court interpreting and wanted to know where they get their train-
ing from. He said “people lose cases because of interpretation”. What is relevant and important for the residents of Hermanus is that court efficiency is dependent on a number of factors outside the control of presiding officers. Other problems, said Govender according to Mogoeng, are poor investigation of cases, police taking statements down incorrectly and investigations pending even after trials have started. He also cited the lack of resources for courts to function efficiently. “These are factual problems and a reality for many courts in South Africa, and the Hermanus court is not an exception. Besides the heavy court rolls we face every day,
the magistrates in Hermanus are also faced with lack of resources, sometimes poor interpretation, delays in investigation of cases especially matters where blood and DNA analysis reports is necessary for the trial,” explained Govender. Govender reports Mogoeng as saying magistrates are not involved in the training of interpreters, or in investigating cases, or providing resources to the courts. That is the function of the executive/government. “Magistrates and judges are independent public office bearers employed by the judiciary with the Chief Justice as their head. They are not public servants or government employees.”

Con artist up to her old tricks again KERRY VAN RENSBURG A con artist who is well-known to the Hermanus police has struck again – and a resident of Northcliff is her latest victim. On Saturday 25 January, a white woman in her thirties knocked at his door, says the resident. She asked for him by name, which he found surprising. She told him that her car was at a nearby petrol station and that she could not pay for petrol. She wanted to borrow R200. She said a man had given her a lift to his house, and was waiting in the car outside. She promised to return the money on Monday. The resident asked for her contact details – name and phone number. She then asked to use the bathroom. It was close to the front door, so she was not out of his sight for very long. He gave the woman the R200 and off she went. He also wrote down the registration number of the car. Soon after they had gone, he noticed that his camera was missing. The woman did not return his money, so the resident reported the incident to the Hermanus police. They recognised her name at once. Apparently she was active in Johannesburg and the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, and has re-emerged in the Hermanus area. The resident was advised to open a case and press charges, which he did. He says he wants other residents to be aware of this con artist’s tactics so that others will not be taken for a ride.
SAPS had quiet season, barring some theft, housebreaking The Hermanus police station commander, Nomana Adonis, reports that their cluster had a quiet festive season, apart from the few housebreaking and theft cases. Cellphones, laptops and cameras were among the stolen items. According to Lieutenant Fadila September, spokesperson, in most cases entry was gained through doors and windows that had been left open. Beaches were patrolled and no
complaints were received. No murders occurred during the festive season. Assaults in Zwehlile and Hawston showed an increase during this period, though, but no serious incidents were reported. “Our members worked extra hours during this period. Roadblocks were held on rural roads and but no offences were reported,” said September. Adonis would like to thank the community for their support in mak-
ing sure that they took good care of their property. “I hope that this year we will work well together with the public and other role-players to make our town safer and crime free.” ) The community service centre number is 028 313 5300 or 028 313 5349. However, the following telephone numbers can be contacted if the telephone lines at the Hermanus police station are faulty: 082 522 3219 and sector phone 079 893 9986.
HPP has hands full with shoplifting, theft, poaching Hermanus Public Protection (HPP) had its hands full with especially shoplifters during the festive season. Other complaints investigated included children begging at supermarkets and illegal poaching. Four cases of shoplifting were opened and ten suspects handed over to members of the Hermanus Police. One man was caught with items
worth R79,95; three men with items worth R358,50; four with stolen items worth R8 037,90 from various shops in the CBD and another two suspects were caught stealing goods worth R219,90. Children begging for money and food were reported mostly at Eastcliff Spar Centre, where HPP supervisors chased the children away.
Two suspected illegal poaching cases were investigated: one at the Blowhole and the other near Bientang’s Cave. In one incident, 59 abalone were found, but the suspects managed to evade arrest. In the other case, the suspects were found with no abalone in their possession.

Sergeant Fundile Mava ta with the weapon found at a suspect’s house in Zwe lihle.
Swift police action leads to arrest Members of the Hermanus SAPS Tracing Team and Crime Prevention, led by Sergeant Fundile Mavata, held an intelligence driven operation tracking down two attempted murder suspects. The attempted murder incident occurred on 22 January at 07:55, when a 28-year-old man from Kwasa-Kwasa in Zwelihle was shot at. Luckily, the suspect missed and fled the scene. According to Constable Mbongeni Mazuthu, spokesperson for the Hermanus police, members followed leads and within a few hours on the same day, two men, aged 21 and 27, were arrested and a 9 mm
pistol with four rounds of ammunition was recovered from one of the suspect’s homes in Zwelihle. Upon further investigation, it was established that the firearm recovered had been stolen from a 65-year-old man on 13 January. The suspects were charged with attempted murder, the illegal possession of a fire-arm and robbery. Both suspects remain in custody until further investigation. Station commander Colonel Noma Adonis congratulated the members for the good work in apprehending the suspects.
Hawston man on abalone charge JANINE VAN DER RIET A man from Hawston appeared in the Strand Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday in connection with the illegal possession and transportation of abalone. Brent Dalton (30), who was arrested on 31 October last year in Gordon’s Bay with 5 307 shelled abalone, was granted R5 000 bail in the Strand Magistrate’s Court.
The police’s dog unit and the Sea Border Unit conducted a successful operation. Following up information, they pulled off a Toyota Fortuner for searching at the corner of Boundary Road and the R44 in Gordon’s Bay. In the vehicle police found 18 plastic bags containing 5 307 units of abalone. The case was postponed until 13 February.

Hermanus celebrates Pinot noir The Hemel-en-Aarde Winegrowers Association will host an exclusive celebration this weekend of Pinot noir, the grape for which the wine route has become well-known. “The time is right for our producers making Pinot noir from grapes grown in the Hemel-en-Aarde area to join forces in presenting the fruit of their terroir and sharing their Pinot experiences with a select audience of Pinot enthusiasts,” says Frieda Lloyd, coordinator of the Hermanus R320 Wine Route. Tickets to this pioneering two-day event cost R1 500 each. According to Lloyd, there are only 10 tickets left. “We decided to limit the tickets to 150 and they sold out incredibly fast after being promoted via social networking.” The celebration will kick off at the Bona Dea Estate in Hemel-en-Aarde on Friday at 12 noon. The programme includes a maiden joint tasting of Pinot noir 2012 vintages from the three appellations – Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, Upper Hemel-enAarde Valley and Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge; a red Burgundy tasting hosted by acclaimed wine author and Burgundy specialist Remington Norman; and tasty treats presented by master chef Bertus Basson. A Pinot noir-focused dinner at Bona Dea Estate will round off the evening. Celebrations continue on the Saturday with wineries showcasing their unique Pinot offerings and hosting a variety of events at their tasting venues from 10:00 until late in the evening, including a Pinot-themed breakfast, platters, lunch, vertical tastings, canapés, sundowners and a PiNOT party. Not only has this event drawn a wide local Pinot noir-focused audience, but there will also be guests coming from Cape Town, Stellenbosch, Durban, Johannesburg, the UK, Germany, Ireland and even China. Says Bevan Newton Johnson, chairperson of the Hemel-en-Aarde Winegrowers’ Association: “Hemel-enAarde has established a reputation for some of the finest quality Pinot noirs in the Cape. This event provides an opportunity for us to come together as a community and host Pinot noir enthusiasts from many different destinations to an unforgettable experience of our area and our wines.” For more information and tickets, contact Frieda Lloyd on 083 305 7319.

Committee members of the Women Action Group (WAG) collected their new Avanza 1.5 SX from Toyota on Wednesday 22 January. Standing alongside the new sevenseater vehicle are (from left) Trevor Titus, Carmen Ti tus (WAG project manager), Ansie Phi lander (WAG vicesecretary), Natasha Kruger (Toyota business manager), Corrie Butler (WAG vicechairperson), Oosie Oosthuizen (Toyota sales rep), Charleen Adriaans (secretary WAG), Takesure Razah (chairperson WAG), Gilbert Muchanyara (treasurer WAG). 50YEAR REUNION: Daphne Weaving from Hermanus took it upon herself to track down old friends, colleagues and neighbours who all lived in Chingola in Zambia until the mid 1960s and had not seen each other in 50 years. The group of more than 60 people got togeth er for a joyous reunion at the Classroom restaurant on Saturday evening, including (from left): Nikki and Peter Nupen, Lily Docking, Mi randa and Paul Kuestermann, Daphne Weaving, Dobbie and Ria Dob kins, and Glenys Chaplin. Weaving was born in Chingola, where her father was employed at the Nchanga copper mine owned by Anglo America in the former Rhodesia. The mine started production in the 1930s and at nearly 30 km wide, it was the second largest opencast mine in the world. All the guests at the reunion (average age 70) had parents who were employed at the mine. “Tribute was paid to our parents at the reunion, for their pioneering spirit. They had to contend with many tropical diseases such as malaria and black water fever, ty phoid, polio and TB, and all of us know of someone who had died in underground mining accidents or had been savaged by hippos and crocodiles,” says Daphne. “We like to think that the tenacity of our parents lives on in their children today, as shown by the effort they made to attend our reunion!” PHOTO: HEDDA MITTNER
CAKE WINNER: Operation Brakkenjan received a pleasant sur prise in December when A Stewart Pharmacy organised a cake raffle to raise funds for animals in need. The winner, Alan de Kock, holds the huge cake with “blue doggy” Janita Swart. The cake was donated by Pick n Pay and the amount of R900,70 was raised. Dog and cat food will be bought at Pick n Pay in Hermanus to feed neglected dogs and cats in and around Her manus. A big thank you to Lindsay Light from A Stewart Phar macy for always looking out for the animals in need.
Smart new wheels for women’s group KERRY VAN RENSBURG A brand new vehicle was handed over to Carmen Titus and her team from the Women Action Group (WAG) last Wednesday evening. The vehicle, a sparkling white Avanza 1.5 SX, presented by Hermanus Toyota with a big red bow, was made possible thanks to a donation from Lotto. WAG, which is situated in the Mount Pleasant Business Centre, is a registered NGO, and this year the organisation is celebrating 10 years of service. The community programmes it runs include support groups for children and adults, educational workshops, and a feeding
scheme to support HIV-infected and affected families. The nutritional centre provides meals three days a week for orphaned and vulnerable children, families living in poverty and those dealing with HIV. Carmen, the WAG project manager, says they sent in three quotations to Lotto for vehicles, and they decided which vehicle they wanted to fund. Up until now, Carmen, Trevor Titus, Sr Du Plessis and Mariana Cornelius, who are part of the WAG team, have used their private vehicles to reach the community, manage their projects and attend meetings. “This donation is a big achievement for the organisation and besides the excitement we will be able
to manage our projects much better and reach more people in the Overstrand, especially the farms,” says Carmen. Having the new vehicle will also enable the WAG to network more effectively with other organisations as their private transport limited them from reaching the businesses community. They will also be able to transport members of the organisation to workshops and training. “This is a great improvement from where we were and the start of much bigger things. WAG is also celebrating their 10th anniversary and this is the best present ever,” says Carmen. She thanked Lotto for the donation and Hermanus Toyota, who facilitated the deal, for their support.
UMSINSI HEALTH CARE SPON SORS DRAMA STUDENTS: Two lucky students at the Helen O’Grady Drama Academy have received a year’s sponsorship from Umsinsi Health Care, ena bling them to complete a further year of the internationally ac claimed youth development pro gramme. The recipients, Khanya Mgwedane and Bernice Janse van Rensburg, both Grade 8 learners at Hermanus High, were part of the drama group invited to perform A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Umsinsi’s fifth anniversary, held recently at Grootbos Private Nature reserve near Gansbaai. The secretly arranged performance was a surprise for the 46 corporate guests who arrived in appropriate fairy and court dress. Managing director of Umsinsi Health, Amanda Wilde (above, second from left) said everyone was delighted with Shakespeare’s romantic comedy performed in a clearing in the milk wood forest, suitably enchanted with candles, paraffin lamps and fairy lights. When hearing that students Khanya (far right) and Bernice were due to leave the Helen O’Grady youth development programme be cause of financial constraints, Wilde offered the sponsorships in light of the successful evening and wonderful performances at Grootbos. “Both Khanya and Bernice can now look for ward to another year of developing critical skills in areas of communication, confidence, creativity and performance,” says Grant Grif fiths, Helen O’Grady Overberg principal .

all the boxes of a worthy benefactor and provides an important service to all sectors of the local community. “The NSRI is totally reliant on donations from the public and we are happy to be in a position to make a contribution,” said Haman. Hoekom is daar vier?

The beauty industry, which is supported by many women, is now also penetrating the male market, with more men taking care of not only their health, but also their appearance. More men are now adding to their traditional range of cosmetics consisting of soap and aftershave, introducing cleansers, moisturisers and even anti-ageing creams. New product development in the cosmetic industry is focused on incorporating vitamins and anti-ageing nutrients and antioxidants into skin, hair and nail-care products. Cosmetic science has identified the nutrients that are important for the maintenance of healthy hair, skin and nails. Most of these cosmetic products are applied topically to help restore skin hydration and elasticity, to help with the repair of damaged nails and hair and to help prevent premature skinageing. If nutrients applied topically could hold all these benefits, surely regular intake of these nutrients through our
diets is just as important. This points to the importance of optimal nourishment, not only for general health and well-being, but also to help maintain healthy hair, skin and nails. Scientific research into the health benefits and properties of Rooibos tea has shown us that this tea contains potent antioxidants. Antioxidants are known for their protective effects against damage of body cells and tissues caused by free radicals. There are numerous antioxidants found in a variety of plant foods, but all of them do not target the same body tissues. Rooibos tea antioxidants have been shown to benefit skin health, specifically helping to prevent premature ageing and wrinkling. Therefore, watch out for Rooibos tea extracts being incorporated into anti-ageing skincare products. It is believed that you should drink three cups of Rooibos Tea per day to get the true benefit of the anti-ageing antioxidants found in this natural tea. Nutritional supplements may assist in the treatment of numerous skin complaints and problems. Brewer’s yeast is one of the most popular nutri-
tional remedies for acne. Brewer’s yeast is a natural source of not only vitamin B complex, but also zinc, chromium, amino acids and many other important nutrients. The omega 6 fatty acid GLA, which is found in Evening Primrose Oil and Starflower Oil, is believed to assist in the treatment of eczema. Omega 3 fatty acids, on the other hand, are believed to assist in the treatment of psoriasis. Psoriasis is an inflammatory skin disorder characterised by dry, red, sometimes itching and flaking patches of skin. The omega 3 fatty acids found in fatty fish such as salmon is believed to have mild anti-inflammatory properties and large doses of salmon oil supplements have been shown to assist in the relief of the symptoms of psoriasis. Nutrients for healthy nails include omega 3 essential fatty acids, omega 6 essential fatty acids, zinc, vitamin A, selenium, biotin and calcium. For beautiful hair, skin and nails we need to make sure we are getting enough of these essential nutrients through a healthy, balanced diet.

This tortoise appeared in Jane Moore’s garden in Northcliff on 16 January and again on 23 January. She says it does not look like an angulate tortoise, the kind she usually sees, and wonders if any one can identify it. “It was quite tame, so I thought it might be an escaped pet. It was about 20 cm long and 15 cm wide,” says Jane.

Change the village square and streets into an appealing evening venue Hermanus does not have much to offer for families to do in the evening and on weekends, and a bored guest is the worst guest. Some ideas which came from discussions with local and international travellers could include making the village square a truly festive place, with Christmas lights, arts and crafts, local musicians / buskers, a night market, food stalls (which will relieve the pressures on restaurants during these peak times). Our local Saturday Market entrepreneurs could use an opportunity like this to have extended trading days. Where are all the budding buskers, entertainers, marimba bands who could earn an income by entertaining visitors? I have been fortunate to have travelled to many cities and towns across the world, and I always love seeing how a village or area in a city transforms itself at night to meet the needs of visitors (and entice them to take out their wallets and spend). At night the lights go on, streets are closed, restaurants extend onto the pavements or even into the streets, local fresh
food entrepreneurs set up their stalls, crafters exhibit with pride, entertainers bedazzle the visitors with their skills and talents, teenagers have their own safe, alcohol free section to enjoy themselves (without Mom and Dad looking over their shoulders). Word of mouth is the most popular form of marketing, and if people are enjoying themselves, then we can enjoy fantastic marketing of our area through people sharing their experience via the various social media platforms. This translates into no marketing costs to us as a business community. What could we do to encourage our visitors to promote and share their experience about our area on the social media platforms? Hermanus is no longer “the sleepy little town”. We are a popular tourist destination, and have the ability to attract even more tourists and to encourage them not just to use us as a passing through destination, but rather as a base from which they can explore the area and spend a few days –- ensuring more bums in beds and seats.
As a “newbie” businessman to our wonderful area, I will probably hear all the “why we cannot do it” and the typical sayings that chloroform people’s ideas, such as “we have tried that before”, “we don’t have budget”, “we won’t get permission” and many more. Tourism has a positive spin-off for all sectors of our business community, and if we were to capitalise on opportunities we would see local entrepreneurs increase their (much needed) income, create more jobs and become a destination promoted positively on the social media platforms. A Taylor Swift quote “This is a new year. A new beginning. And things will change”, rings so true. The world is ever changing and how do we adapt and capitalise on the challenges and opportunities? Perhaps being involved in a small community the quote by Woodrow Wilson (which sits at the back of my head as I write this) might become a reality: “If you want to make enemies, try to change something”. Let’s hope not!
GERALD ELSKE, SANDBAAI
Is there indeed a smelly rat in the diesel tank? Rehabilitation of road leaves bitter after-taste The great anticipation awaiting the upgrading of Main Road is leaving yet another bitter after-taste. An obvious expectation would be that the on-going blockage from the main sewerage and storm water pipes in the middle of the Main Road, is addressed. Businesses are severely affected due to the restricted access. What is the point in getting a “new” Main Road with the same underlying problems? We will still have the usual sewerage stench and storm water damage affecting the businesses. This is something our businesses will have to put up with again, not to mention the continuous expense for plumbing and sanitation materials. Attending to this matter first and foremost, would justify the expense of your works in the Main Road.
RITA SABBE
(Mike Bartman, deputy-director: community services, responds:) A number of storm water pipes within Main Road will be replaced and manholes repaired, which should improve the situation. The upgrading of the CBD storm water network does however not form part of the road project. The blockages of the sewer pipeline are mainly due to the amount of fat being discharged from food establishments. Businesses are urged to ensure that fat traps are adequate and cleaned regularly.

The motoring public has, over the last year or two, been subjected to so many fuel-price increases that they are fast becoming shockproof. But are they also being taken for a ride by the fuel retailers? The public is aware that the fuel prices are fixed monthly by the government. The retail price of petrol is obligatory and only differs in relation to the distance from the coast. But this arrangement does not apply to diesel fuel. Only the wholesale price of this fuel is fixed and filling stations, the retailers, are allowed to charge the motorists whatever they wish. In theory this should be an excellent arrangement, allowing the free market and competition to depress the price of diesel fuel to the benefit of the motorists. But what if the retailers collectively decide to keep the price at the pumps high in order to increase their profits? This is, of course,
an illegal practice with dire consequences for the perpetrators. Without making any allegations, one cannot help but wonder what is going on when one compares the retail price of diesel sold in Hermanus to that charged by filling stations in other towns. In Bredasdorp, 50 ppm diesel can currently be bought at a filling station at R13,40 per litre. The price in Caledon is R13,50. At three filling stations in Hermanus, the price is R13,85, R13,85 and R13,86 respectively. Filling stations at Sandbaai and Onrusrivier both charge R13,89 per litre. And they are supplied by three different oil companies. As far as the general public is aware, there is only one refinery in the Cape Town area. Maybe some of the oil companies transport their fuel by sea to Cape Town. Some filling stations can even receive
their fuel from Mossel Bay. It is evident that the cost of transport has an influence on the price of fuel, but how does one explain the fact that 50 ppm diesel is between 35c and 39c per litre more expensive in Hermanus than in Caledon, while both towns are situated approximately the same distance from Cape Town? And even worse: why is there a difference of almost 50c per litre in the price of diesel sold in Bredasdorp compared to Hermanus, taking into account that Bredasdorp is some 70 km farther away from Cape Town? One would like to believe that there is a reason for this glaring discrepancy and that the fuel retail business community will explain the reason to the local motorists. If such an explanation is not forthcoming, this may be a matter for the Competition Commission to investigate.

Petrus jy kan gerus weer staan, red ding is dringend nodig.– KOOS ) Dit stink geweldig by Sandbaai. Dit was erg.– CHARMAINE SALIES ) There is another ugly blockhouse being built next to Woolies. Where are the town planners/ historical committee? Why are they not con cerned about the “village” aesthetic of Her manus? What an eyesore. So sad. ) The quiet Main Road is just a taste of what Hermanus CBD will be like if a mall gets built in Sandbaai. It will kill local business, just like in Jeffrey’s Bay, Paarl, Worcester and all the other small towns around the country.
Kom skrik bietjie wakker.– HESTER ) Let us start a petition to present to the “powers that be” demanding that fireworks be totally banned from our Overberg.– JAY L ) It was chaos in Onrus and Vermont on Old Year’s Eve with fireworks going off non stop. Therefore, we demand a total ban of fireworks in the Overstrand. Call for a referendum. This has got to stop now. ) My family and I are in full support of making Hermanus a fireworks free town. Our animals have suffered enough. Other coastal towns have total bans, why can’t we? ) I am with you, antifireworks. Let’s ban fire works in the Overberg. I am not even interested in seeing them, as I know how upsetting it is to all animal life.– LINDA PRETORIUS ) To all the people who complain about fire works, please get something else to complain about. There was always a proper, regulated fire works show, then everyone complained, now nothing. Once a year people would like to cele brate new years and it’s always been fun and beautiful to see fireworks in the sky.– SIMON ) For those walking their pets on Vermont Drive, please pick up their pooh. We’re inundated with flies. ) Who are the people walking from house to house in Onrus with a very big dog unleashed and tramping all over my garden where my cat lies? How dare they come in people’s gardens with that dog? The owner of CEM***** lady with the denim skirt who left her beautiful bull terrier in the car on 22 January at Pick n Pay – it was a very hot day, so next time please open all your windows at least ¾ of the way for a draft. With only one window open at a tiny little crack, your dog was very hot. ) Attention all motorists: According to a local traffic officer, the correct rules at the circle is to only stop at the pedestrian crossings when you approach the circle and not when you are inside and leaving the circle. It is dangerous for people to just stop dead in front of you.– A ) Wanneer gaan die verkeer die mense belet

Ek was vreesbe vange. Waar is julle “common sense”?– KOOS - VOËLKLIP ) Hermanus now has a proper webcam over looking Walker Bay. See it at www.hermanus.lap entola.co.za/hermanuswebcam.– TAKI MARAKIS ) Aan M. Rive: Vat jou goed en trek. Wie was eerste in die Kaap gewees, die Hollanders of die Engelse? ) Yes, I have also experienced problems with our post office. My magazine also wasn’t deliv ered. Mr Rabie had no idea where it was, but phoned 20 minutes later to say it was found. Post from overseas containing 14 photos never arrived but the ones destined for Grabouw did arrive. Two magnets posted from SomersetWest also never arrived. This is unacceptable and is very fishy. Mr Rabie has no answers.– LINDA PRETORIUS ) Wat ’n ontdekking was dit nie. Ek stap voor Kersfees by Chiko in Swartdamweg in. Doen so voort Natasha. Home education costs less As a home schooling parent, I read with interest the article on page 12 of the Hermanus Times, 23 January, about the costs of schooling in Hermanus in 2014. Readers might be interested to learn that home education is a legal educational choice, with many significant benefits and saving money is definitely among them. It generally costs less than institutional schooling, because there are no school buildings to maintain or teachers’ salaries to pay and parents can choose how much they spend on curriculum materials. Where both parents work outside the home, the choice for home education often requires thatoneparentmustquittheirjob,to beat home with the children. Due to the prospective loss of income, many parents view it as an expensive choice.However,ifallthecostsofschooling(e.g. school fees, uniforms, lunch money, fund-raising, transport), as well as the costs associated with working, (transport, professional clothing, make-up, lunches, day care etc.) are taken into account, then home education is not as expensive as is generally perceived. Besides possibly saving families thousands of rands, some of the many other benefits that home education offers are: one-on-one tuition, special needs and abilities can be catered for, it promotes better family relationships, childrenexperiencelessnegativepeerpressureand are not exposed to bullies, violence, drugs or other social vices, the parents’ values, moral and religious beliefs are not contradicted by the state’s values, children develop better social skills than their school-going peers, students have the freedom to pursue their passions and sports and can manage their time better. Extensive research in the USA shows that home education produces well-educated learners who become successful and socially responsible citizens as adults, regardless of the income level, educational level and ethnicity of the parents. Even parents who dropped out of school can successfully home educate their children! At high school level, most SA home schoolers opt for accredited distance education courses and many write internationally-recognised school-leaving examinations such as Cambridge International Examinations or the American GED and SATs. They are readily accepted and succeed at universities and colleges, both in SA, on-line and abroad. The recent growth in the home schooling community in South Africa is largely fuelled by dissatisfaction with a failing public school system. Prospective home educators in the Overberg can find more info about starting home schooling at our local support group’s blog at http://overberghomeschoolers.wordpress.com/starting-homeschooling/

Because of these significant upgrades and extensions, the obligation in terms of the Municipal Systems Act, Section 77, to undertake an assessment in terms of Section 78 of the Municipal Systems Act, of the way in which Overstrand Municipality is struc-
tured to deliver water and sanitation services, was triggered. A report was tabled to inform council of progress with the Section 78 process to date, and to resolve the way forward. Draft audited annual report for the 2012/13 financial year As reported in the HT last week, the draft audited annual report for the 2012/13 financial year obtained a clean audit. The report will be open for public scrutiny and comment until Friday 28 February 2014. It can be accessed on the municipal website www.overstrand.gov.za and hard copies will be available at administrative offices and public libraries. Council will consider the final annual report together with all comments and representations received, at a meeting scheduled for 26 March 2014. This meeting will be open to the public. For enquiries on the reports, contact Rochelle Louw at 028 313 8071 or via email at rlouw@overstrand.gov.za.

Honey’s first trip to the sea at Blaauwberg with Judy Miller from HAWS.
Farewell to Honey at last Never mind the Kimberley Hole dog. Hermanus has its own famous doggie who has captured the hearts of many dog lovers nationwide! For the past few months, they have been following the fate of Honey from the Hermanus Animal Welfare Society (HAWS), who was on the “Last Chance List” after failing to find a home. Seven-year-old Honey arrived at HAWS clinic eight months ago with her neck ripped open from a dog attack. Once recovered, she was put into the welfare kennels for adoption. Here she melted everyone’s hearts with her cute mannerism of tilting her head to one side and holding up her paw in a “high-5” salute. She just adores people, but alas would not mix then with other dogs, as she is still very defensive after her attack. HAWS then put her onto their social network page and circulated her poster to all dog lovers and rescue centres hoping to find a home. She even reached the attention of a woman in the United Kingdom who agreed to adopt her and pay for her airfare over there, but then decided the quarantine would be too long. Her plight touched many who were desperate to save her from death row. Honey began to grow depressed and lost weight in her kennels and it was then that she began to accept mixing with some calmer dogs. Finally, two Cape Town homes offered to adopt her last week, so off went the HAWS team, backed by well wishers and prayers from her followers, to visit both homes, accompanied by Naomi Pretorius, a volunteer dog behaviourist/dog whisperer. But also, it was not meant to be as both owners were not happy when she did not adapt to their animals immediately. So with disappointed hearts, HAWS returned to the kennels, but not before the staff took Honey on an outing to Blaauwberg beach and her first-ever trip to the sea. Her fans were distraught at the news, but then suddenly luck struck. As members of HAWS returned, they were told a woman in Stanford had come in to see Honey and after a quick call she came in the next day and decided Honey was for her. HAWS wishes Honey and the two older cats in her new home a wonderful and successful life together.
Honey bids farewell to Chester Khuzani, a worker at HAWS and a special friend.

Algemeen General HAPPY ARRIVAL: Two rare African black oys tercatchers, a threatened bird species predomi nantly found in the Southern Cape, have not only decided to make their home on Piet se Klip but also to raise a family. A single chick was born two weeks ago after a painstaking effort by Giangi Negra, the owner of Bien tang’s Cave, to guard and protect the egg. Over the 32day incubation period the parent birds took turns hunting for mussels and nest ing their single egg. With their breeding sea son at the height of summer (December to February) African black oystercatchers are most vulnerable to predators which include cu rious humans and canines. Not only did they have to endure the presence of holidaymakers and sightseers, but also the scorching heat, followed by torrential rain and heavy seas during the first week of January, before their offspring hatched safely. After quite a rocky start this newborn brown ball of fluff can now be seen jumping from rock to rock and scurrying for meals brought by its parents.

Although they tried their best not to disturb the nesting family, some brave intervention had to be taken by Giangi Negra and members of Bientang’s Cave staff members. On 5 Janu ary the area experienced heavy rains and high swells, putting these oystercatcher parents to the test. Trying to rotate the egg for warmth, the vulnerable spotted egg rolled of its rocky nest, dropping over a meter into a shallow rock puddle. Bientang’s Cave staff rushed to the rescue, braving the pouring rain and crashing waves. They managed to retrieve the miraculously undamaged egg. Shortly after returning it to its nest, with additional rocks to secure it, the frantic parents quickly returned to their egg. Five days later a new member of this rare species was born – a true survivor.

Qhayiya graduate thriving in the USA KERRY VAN RENSBURG I am a product of Qhayiya and my journey so far has been blessed. This is how Vido Qwabe, now 26, described himself while home for a three-week holiday after spending the past three years studying in the USA. The last time the Hermanus Times touched base with this remarkable young man, was when he returned to Hermanus after spending a year in Germany where he worked at Lautenbach, which is a community similar to Camphill, for people with special needs, and just before his departure to the USA. He had been awarded a four-year university scholarship to study towards a BA in Social Therapy. Vido matriculated from Qhayiya Secondary School in 2005 and was a member of the first Junior Town Council (JTC). This is where he met Theo de Wet, who managed the
JTC. Theo became Vido’s mentor and, to a large extent, a father figure. Theo has since retired, but the relationship between the two has remained firm. Vido is studying at Camphill Special Schools through Presscot College in Pennsylvania. He says the best part about being a foreign student in the USA is being exposed to different forms of thinking. The challenges include: “Missing family and home sometimes.” During Vido’s visit to Hermanus with Lina Lange, his “glamorous German girlfriend” of 15 months by his side, he visited his three brothers, went sight-seeing in Cape Town and along the Garden Route, and spent time with Theo. Back in the United States, he says there are students from all over the world at the facility he is studying at. “When you meet people in the same predicament as you, you don’t feel so alone, because we are all in the same pond. You don’t feel as isolated or disconnected from

On his return to the USA on 13 January for the start of his fourth year, Vido, who is studying philosophical perspective, was preparing for a presentation on German philosopher Nietsche. Lina has since returned to Germany after completing her volunteer service at Camphill in the USA. She is planning to study medicine later in the year. When he is done with his studies, Vido says: “Perhaps I will move to Germany.” Will he work for Camphill? “No,” says Vido, “I see myself in a bigger castle.” When asked what he would say to inspire learners still at Qhayiya, Vido replies: “Everything we desire or aspire to achieve is within us. We look on the outside for success, but miss the bigger picture. You have to look within, realise your potential, and stay true to yourself.”

Peugeot backs Tread Mountain Bike Skills initiative MOTORPRESS Peugeot South Africa is about to throw its weight behind the growing sport of mountain biking in a big way, thanks to its sponsorship of Tread Magazine’s innovative Tread Skills Clinics initiative. The mountain-biking journal will be presenting at least 39 clinics during 2014, all backed by Peugeot, and aimed at improving both the capabilities of novice riders, and sharpening the technique and speed of more experienced mountain bikers. “We have identified a very real synergy between the rapidly growing sport of mountain biking, and Peugeot’s burgeoning range of crossover vehicles,” says Clara MetivierBeukes, GM of marketing at Peugeot SA. “Our 3008 is the perfect partner for mountainbikersseekingaspacious, luxuriousvehicle that is also versatile and practical enough to cope with the specific needs of the mountain
biking community,” says Metivier-Beukes. “The cargo capacity of the 3008 is generous enough to accommodate a fully assembled mountain bike, and access to that space is convenient, thanks to the split tailgate. That tailgate also provides a useful seating platform during final preparations before a ride,” she points out. In addition, Metivier-Beukes adds, the 3008’s standard on-board navigation system makes finding mountain-bike race venues and trail parks easy, while its raised ride height ensures that it easily copes with country roads and gravel tracks. “Then there’s the 1.6-litre turbocharged engine, which not only delivers sparkling performance and plenty of low-down lugging power, but also achieves excellent fuel efficiency on the open road,” Metivier-Beukes said. By mid-2014, Peugeot will be extending its reach into the crossover market with the exciting 2008 compact crossover, which will
bring the youthful exuberance and dynamic style of the popular 208 hatchback to the crossover segment. The 2008 will also be incorporated into Peugeot’s activities at the Tread Skills Clinics. The Tread Skills Clinics organised and hosted by Tread Magazine employ a series of progressive modules to teach mountain bikers of varying expertise how to enhance ride comfort, improve bike control and gain confidence. The 39 clinics planned for 2014 will provide riders with tips and techniques to assist in maximising their performance in a convivial and enjoyable framework. “Mountain biking has already established itself as a key sport and recreational pastime with a very broad appeal across all age groups and genders, and a strong emphasis on families,” Metivier-Beukes says. “The sport’s exponential growth means there is a real need for credible guidance and assistance to master the mountain biking art,
and Peugeot is proud to be assisting mountain bikers in their quest to improve their skills to the benefit of their safety and enjoyment.” Tread is a mountain-biking brand established five years ago with the aim of enhancing the South African mountain-biking experience. It includes a magazine, a website and skills clinics as well as women-specific experiences. Peugeot will have a product presence at each of the Tread Skills Clinics, allowing mountain bikers attending the clinics to experience its crossover models hands on, and will provide clinic attendees with Peugeot-branded goodie bags and certificates. The company will also use its presence on social media networks such as Facebook and Twitter to interact with the mountain bike community via #PeugeotMTBSkills and the @PeugeotClinic handle. QUICKPIC Twenty-five members of the SA Guild of Motoring Journalists (SAGMJ) have just spent two days on the road in the area surrounding the greater Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality to evaluate the nine finalists for the coveted WesBank/SAGMJ Car of the Year award, to be announced in less than a month. Each of the 25 jurors had already been exposed to the finalists, having either attended the local launch event of the vehicle or having tested them for at least three days, under normal driving conditions, in 2013. During the evaluation days, the jury had to test each fi-

to evaluate each of the finalists’ dynamic and response in wet conditions, steering inputs and stability at high speeds, road comfort and suspension on simulated extreme road surfaces as well as handling, braking and cornering abilities on the facility’s Dynamic Handling Track. According to Christo Valentyn, chairman of the SAGMJ, the South African version of the Car of the Year award is one of the toughest and most professionally run events of its kind. “The competition is unique in that all full members of the Guild have input in which vehicles ultimately become finalists. These members also determine the jury, which conducts the formal evaluation of the finalists on behalf of the broader membership, making it one of the most representative and experienced jury panels used in competitions of this nature,” he says. “The demographics of this year’s jury include a wide spectrum of individuals that represent a fair cross-section of the motor-buying public. In terms of age, the youngest jury members are, for instance, in their twenties, while the oldest is in his seventies. And considering the important role women play in vehicle purchasing decisions, the jury also includes four highly experienced and respected women.” Over the next week, the jury members will

evaluate the finalists for the COTY trophy in their segments, with due consideration of aesthetics, quality, price, cost of parts and services and value for money. “The jury has the mandate to select, from the nine extremely worthy finalists, the car that, against its direct competitors and in the market as a whole, displays the ultimate in motoring excellence. This is the competition’s primary criterion,” says Valentyn. The jury members will cast their secret votes on-line, after which the votes will be tallied and audited. The finalist vehicle with the highest score will be awarded the title of 2014 WesBank/SAGMJ Car of the Year, the ultimate award in the South African motoring industry, at a gala event in Sandton on 19 February. The nine finalists for the 2014 WesBank/ SAGMJ Car of the Year competition are: • Audi A3 Sportback 1.4T FSI Manual • Jaguar F-TYPE 3.0 V6 S • Lexus IS 350 F-Sport • Mercedes-Benz A 45 AMG • Peugeot 208 GTI • Porsche Cayman S • Renault Clio4 66 kW Turbo Dynamique • Volkswagen Golf 7 1.4 TSI 90 kW Comfortline DSG and the Volvo V40 D3 Geartronic Excel. Issued on behalf of the South African Guild of Motoring Journalists and WesBank.

Hierdie nuwe Ford wonderbussie is inderdaad ligjare ver-
Galimoto

Opel Meriva 1.4T Enjoy: the party trick HANJO STIER Some people argue that purchasing an MPV or mini-van signals the end of your life’s excitement. Gone are the all-nighters and crazy adventures because chances are good that you’re carting around a little family. I say there’s nothing wrong with that, quite the opposite – it can be just as adventurous. Sure, moving between Kindergarten, school and the office won’t be quite as thrilling as that time you still had a cabrio, when four-finger Frik stole the belt off a Tequila Sheila and you singed all your facial hair at a beach bonfire. That doesn’t mean your new life or car should be dull and dreary though. Never mind that it’s all down to your mindset, but if those boring boxes on wheels alarm you and stretched vans give you heart palpitations, perhaps you should add Opel’s Meriva to your shortlist of family transport. Yes, I immediately christened it “Mommy Mobile” but I also grew quite fond of it. Let me explain. Drawn with lots of creases and curves, the compact MPV shows good proportions and just enough flair to not disappear in a sea of metal at the local mall’s car park. Big headlights share a similar kink to what you’ll find along the car’s flank, the reasons for this being open to multiple interpretations. One reason may be to lower the rear passenger’s window-line, another could simply be the reduction of its rising waist and decreasing visibility. Most probably, Opel’s designers just wanted something different and fun (good!) which draws attention to the opposing door handles on either side of a Meriva. Not only are they opposing, they’re also incredibly close together and thus give away the car’s chief party trick – rear suicide doors. “Suicide” means they open in the opposite direction of what one is accustomed to and given the
You may think that this (the doors) is the car’s only redeeming feature, but luckily there are a few other niceties to lift it above the MPV crowd. PHOTO: QUICKPIC worst set of circumstances, could somehow lead to your involuntary suicide. Modern cars like the Meriva prevent this with auto locking and child locks, this Opel also gets around any tricky door gaps or closing procedures by providing a fat B-pillar (middle beam) with opposing locks. This also aids safety, which is visually obvious when the Meriva’s sides open like a clam shell. You may think that this is the car’s only redeeming feature but luckily there are a few other niceties to lift it above the MPV crowd. Its cabin layout is modern and functional with good quality materials as you would find in other contemporary Opel products. It also has ample storage and luxury features. A central cubby box provides multiple levels
and slides along a rail system, which covers even more space to hide stuff; the front doors have two storage pockets each and the front passenger enjoys a shallow recess for small items above the main glove compartment. The rear seats also adjust individually. Our test model was a base 1.4T Enjoy but its specifications are very similar to the more posh Cosmo version. Main differences are a bit of chrome, climate control and leather trim, bigger wheels and a panoramic sun roof. The compact dimensions of 4,3 m length, 1,9 m width and 1,6 m height are identical. Other measurements are a 400F boot, which extends to 920F by folding the rear seats and a 54F fuel tank, giving an ideal range of 806 km with a claimed average consumption of
6.7F/100km. Maximum output of the 1.4L turbopetrol four cylinder are 103 kW (140 hp) at 4 900 rpm or 200 Nm from 1 850 rpm. 0-100 km/h is pegged at just over 10 seconds and the Meriva’s top speed lies just shy of 200 km/h – not that you’ll enter many races with your Mommy Mobile. What’s far more important is the engine’s wonderful power delivery; a linear and eager pull once it hits 1 500 rpm. The motor runs out of ideas near its red line but we found that it has more than sufficient mid-range punch to dart through traffic or zip along the motorway. Our average consumption was quite a bit higher but we gladly accepted that in exchange for the engine’s willingness to pull forward at almost any speed. MPVs should also be easy to drive and the Meriva shines with very light steering and pedals, a good turning radius and not much torque steer to write about. Its brakes are excellent and, unless you hate these sorts of gadgets, the electric park brake and automatic hill start assist make commuting even easier. Further items to seal the deal are fine instruments with a basic trip computer, multiple driver aids (ABS, EBD, ESP), power windows and mirrors, radio with CD/mp3/Aux/USB and seven speakers, automatic lights and wipers, Bluetooth, daytime running lights, side impact protection, six airbags and ISOFIX anchors. Starting at R253 800 with a 5-year/120 000 km warranty and 5-year/90 000 km service plan, there are cheaper MPVs available but you’ll struggle to find any excitement or class in them. The bigger and more expensive stuff is too bulky so the Meriva doesn’t have much competition in this segment. All testers found Opel’s Meriva 1.4T Enjoy easy and indeed enjoyable to drive while offering enough versatility and quirkiness to any potential owners. The element(s) of fun, adventure and excitement are up to you – it’s my opinion that the Meriva won’t hold you back from any of these. Galimoto Media

Touch, pause, engage QUICKPIC Western Province Rugby can look forward to the support of the toughest player on the block for the 2014 season: Land Rover.
Land Rover has partnered up with WP Rugby. Here from left with their new team mate are De Kock Steenkamp, Frans Malherbe, Scarra Ntubeni and Schalk Burger. PHOTO: QUICKPIC
At a launch function held in Cape Town this morning, it was announced that Land Rover will be the official associate and exclusive vehicle partner of the union for the next three years. In terms of the agreement, the Land Rover brand will be represented on the kit of the DHL Stormers and DHL Western Province in Vodacom Super Rugby, the Absa Currie Cup and the Vodacom Cup tournaments respectively. The local sponsorship complements Land Rover’s global association with the sport of rugby, and in addition to the distinctive branding, a fleet of vehicles will be supplied to a number of Western Province athletes and management. Kevin Flynn, Managing Director of Jaguar Land Rover South Africa and sub-Sahara Africa (JLR SA and SSA) said: “Today’s announcement marks a significant development in the partnership between Land Rover and rugby. The brand is proud of its latest partnership at this level of the sport and it is fitting that the world’s finest allterrain vehicles – sold in over 160 markets worldwide - should support Western Province Rugby. It also dovetails perfectly with the build-up to Land Rover’s partnership with the 2015 Rugby World Cup”. The full range of Land Rover models will join the DHL Western Province squad; from the iconic Defender to the all-new Range Rover Sport – the fastest, most agile, most responsive Land Rover ever. “There’s nothing tougher or more capable than a Land Rover and we believe this partnership will build on and reinforce that fact,” explained Flynn. “Through this association we will drive the message home, and reap the benefits not only for our dealers in the Western Cape, but across the country.” A number of senior DHL Stormers and DHL WP athletes were present at the announcement, as well as top management and executives. WPRFU President, Mr Thelo Wakefield, said: “We are delighted to welcome Land Rover to the family. This long-term partnership with one of the world’s most recognisable brands further enhances the enormous prestige and attraction of WP Rugby, both locally and nationally. Land Rover is a true champion of rugby from community to elite level and we look forward to working closely with the company in the future.” “DHL Newlands has a capacity of almost 48 000, and we hope to fill it to the brim – aided by Land Rover owners in the Western Province - for the DHL Stormers’ first Vodacom Super Rugby home game on Friday 28 February, when they take on the Hurricanes,” concluded Flynn.

DOGS nobbled by the bookies?

Enzo did his usual early season sprint for the finish line on Tuesday, leaving himself low on gas for the next 40 laps. Below him, there was an enormous spread of 29 points down to last place. This was unusual enough to suggest the DOGS may be taking tips from bowlers from the Indian sub-continent. There were some suspiciously poor performances from The Yorkshire Ripper, The Sporting Cock, Howay the Lads, and Inspector Morse. Have the DOGS really been nobbled by the bookies? )The scores were: 40 Mannes van Zyl; 38 Ian New-

Get set for the Camphill Sports Challenge It’s now a firm fixture on the Western Cape MTB and trail run calendars. The Camphill Sports Challenge has become a popular annual event for cyclists and runners and this year it takes place on Saturday 22 February. Held under the auspices of Hermanus Adventures, it takes enthusiasts into some of the most beautiful nooks and crannies of the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. And even for those who are not super-fit, but enjoy an outdoor challenge, there are shorter runs and walks for every member of the family. Best of all, while you enjoy a day in the open air, you’ll be contributing to a worthy cause. On this day of the year Camphill School flings wide its doors and invites you to come in and share in the special kind of magic to be found at this remarkable
school and, at the same time, help to ensure its sustainability. Apart from a fun walk for moms, dads, grannies, grandpas and children of all ages, there will be water balls, pony rides and novelty races of all kinds. Delicious breakfasts will be on sale as well as boerewors rolls and lots of other goodies. For the participants there’ll be a free coffee on registration and a free boerie roll, coldrink and medal at the finishing line. MTB riders have a choice of 30 km, 20 km and 10 km at R140, R100 and R50 respectively. Trail runners can choose between 13 km and 8 km trails at R95 and R65 respectively. The 4 km River Run/Walk costs R45 per person and the 2 km Fun Walk, R30. Pre-registrations can be done at www.enteronline.co.za or call Camphill School at 028 3124949 or 2 school@camphill-hermanus.org.za.

Business League cricket under way JAN-HENDRIK KOEGELENBERG The 12th Pennypinchers Business League tournament has started its second half of the season and it seems most of the players have been practising as the standard so far is even better than the first half. Most of the over 35s matches have taken place and next week the normal league will start. As it is the important half of the season, we will see some interesting results in the coming weeks. The Chokers played against the HIK team and for some reason the Chokers brought their A-game and won this fixture reasonably easy, but for the HIK team their spirits are always up and they should be looking to go one better this year. But for now there’s some work to be done in the batting department. Top Plan also took on the Outcast team. Top Plan, captained by Tommy Hough, had no

mercy for the Outcast team skippered by Troy Sergeant, but the Outcast team managed to have a few tricks of their own. In the end Top Plan scored massively and gained valuable points along the way. The Outcast team also scored some points keeping them afloat, but already a few teams are starting to breakaway from the pack in the over 35s group. Next it was the Klip Drifters who took on the Coffin Dodgers. Last year’s winners started well and kept the run-rate high until the 10th over. They managed to score 96 runs in 10 overs which is very high in any format of the game. The Coffin Dodgers, mostly all over 50 years, could not all participate and was helped by much younger players. Some huge hitting by Johan Botha and Jaco Swart made life very difficult for the Klip Drifters as they scored 136 runs in 10 overs placing them top of the log followed by the Wackers.
This competition runs from January to November in conjunction with the Hermanus Times. Sport organisers and teachers in the Overstrand are invited to send their nominees to the Hermanus Times. Every month one winner will be selected and at the end of the year, at a gala function, an overall winner, selected from the finalists, will be crowned. Monthly winners will receive a goody bag with compliments from SuperSport. To kick off the competition, the Hermanus Times crowned their first monthly winner. Congratulations to Scott Patterson, a Grade 12 pupil at Northcliff House College, who received SA colours for bass angling. He was the Western Province champion as well as team captain.
