Couple and neighbours tied up and robbed JANINE VAN DER RIET A 62-year-old man, together with his wife and two neighbours, were tied up in their home in Vermont on Saturday at around 18:00. The couple’s neighbours were visiting them when four men wearing balaclavas entered their home after gaining access through a sliding door, and threatened them with knives. While the people were tied up with shoe laces, the suspects ransacked the house. Before the suspects took his wife upstairs to a bedroom where they instructed her to open the safe, the owner of the house was hit over the head with an unknown object. They took two firearms out of the safe and fled the scene with jewellery, cellphones, two laptops and cash. The residents managed to free themselves and they immediate-

ly phoned the police. The owner of the house was not seriously injured and did not require medical attention after the incident. According to Lieutenant Fadila September from the Hermanus Police, no arrests have been made. Property valued at R70 680 was stolen. Col Francois de Wet from the Hermanus Police says they are frustrated by the increase in housebreakings. “With winter upon us, the tendency is that more housebreakings are reported in this time. It gets dark earlier, but people still leave their doors open till late at night.” According to De Wet, and a recent report compiled by Overstrand Law Enforcement, major factors contributing to crime in the Overstrand area include negligence, alcohol and drug abuse and poverty. Alcohol and drug abuse are also some of the main reasons for housebreaking and robberies. “People will steal anything worth selling, to feed their habits. Parolies out on parole is one of the biggest threats to the Overstrand at present. More than 100 parolies have been released back into the community in the past month. The police encourages residents to keep an eye out for parolies and possible transgressions of their parole conditions such as house arrest hours and other rules they must abide by. “In that case the police must be notified immediately,” said De Wet. Local runners triumph at the Comrades ELBÉ VAN HEERDEN Ten runners from the Whalers Athletics Club completed the gruelling 89th Comrades Marathon in Durban this past weekend. The race was won by South African Bongumusa Mthembu from KwaZulu-Natal in a time of 05:28:34. The first female runner, Eleanor Greenwood, a British-born Canadian, finished in a time of 06:18:15. Local runners finished in good times. Mark Kavanaugh (39) ran the marathon in 07:55:13, finishing 808th out of 8 376 starters and 775th out of 6 686 male starters, and winning a Bill Rowan medal for his effort. Mark only started long-distance running two years ago and this was his second Comrades. He improved his time by more than an hour from 09:12:00 last year. “I joined the Whalers Athletics Club two years ago and they are such an amazing group of people. We train every Thursday with our time trials and they gave me loads of advice leading up to the event. “I would recommend the club to anyone who wants to take up long-distance running, especially if you want to do the Comrades.” The week before the race he started beefing up by following the Tim Noakes Diet. “High fat and protein, hardly any carbs and drinking loads of water. I also tapered down on training and hardly did anything in the last week while trying to get more sleep.” Carlien Roux also won a Vic Clap-

Are you A, B, AB or O? Do you know your blood group? This is the month to find out as it is National Blood Donor Month and on 14 June, World Blood Donor day is celebrated. What better way to celebrate than by knowing your blood group, and who your donation may ultimately benefit. The WP Blood Transfusion Service relies 100% on the support of its volunteer donors. There are many different blood grouping systems but commonly the ABO system is used to determine one of eight blood types. These blood groups, or blood types, are sub-types of the four larger ABO blood groups, which are A, B, AB or O. The Rhesus (Rh) system further divides these four groups into either Rh+ or Rh-, leaving eight blood types: O-, O+, B-, B+, A-, A+, AB- or AB+. Unfortunately not all blood types are compatible and rare blood types are another reason it’s important to know your blood type. ) You can donate blood at the following venues. Afterwards donors will be advised of their blood groups, says Estellé Lecoq, PRO of WP Blood Transfusion Service. Hermanus: Grobbelaar Hall on 6 June from 14:30 – 19:30.

No more waiting in long queues for dispensing of chronic medication KERRY VAN RENSBURG A local Hermanus resident was thrilled when he was able to collect his medication without having to wait in a long queue before being attended to. Gary Lancellas SMSed the Hermanus Times to say that every two months he fetches his government-allocated medicine from the Hermanus Clinic. When he went on Thursday (two weeks ago), to get his medicine, he was told to go to the municipal auditorium opposite the library to fetch his prescription. He says: “It took me three minutes to get my meds, as they were already packed and waiting for me. I was thrilled that I did not have to wait at all.” Lancellas says the satellite distribution point was well organised and he was clearly impressed with the efficiency. Regarding the dispensing and distribution of chronic medicine, Natasha Peterson, Western Cape Government Health communications officer for the Overberg District, says:
“There are currently more than 215 000 patients receiving chronic medicine packs in the Western Cape. In order to improve the quality of life of these patients and alleviate the pressure on health facilities, Western Cape Health has rolled out alternative delivery sites. “Patients who are in a stable condition and who take their medication according to their health-care worker’s instructions would be able to receive their medication from these alternative delivery sites, pending the approval of the doctor or nursing professional. Some of the medicine is pre-packaged at a chronic dispensing unit (CDU) according to the prescriptions and then delivered to the pharmacy at facilities across the province.” Western Cape Minister of Health, Theuns Botha, comments: “There are presently more than 40 000 patients receiving ARTs from the CDU service, and there is scope to expand this significantly. Last year the service was extended to additional clubs where patients were identified who were stable on their therapy, and alternative delivery sites were in-
troduced. These collection points have helped de-congest primary health care facilities and reduce the waiting times for patients who no longer queue at the pharmacies to collect their repeat prescriptions. Peterson says the alternative delivery sites ensure that stable, chronic patients do not have to visit the clinic every month, although they must make sure they visit the clinic every six months for their check-up and prescription renewal. In the Overstrand sub-district there are alternative outreach delivery points in the following areas: Hermanus, Stanford, Hawston, Kleinmond and Gansbaai. Peterson says: “The Hermanus municipal auditorium, the Onrus Clinic, the Stanford municipal community hall and Gansbaai Sport Centre are currently being used, but patients should confirm the date, times and venue with the local clinic. “Patients are urged to adhere to the dates and times given as this initiative can only be successful if we work together.”
Owner of car wash business calls it a day KERRY VAN RENSBURG “It’s economics. It’s not viable for me to keep chipping in each month or for me to sign another long term lease.” This is how Richard Franck, owner of Whale Car Wash and Valet at the Eastcliff Village Centre for the past three years, summed up why, without being specific, he has closed down his business. Their last day of business was Saturday 31 May and Franck says the worst thing about closing down is putting six people out of work. He says with the emergence of bigger shopping centres in Hermanus,
like Checkers and Woolworths, smaller centres are struggling. Chris Lotter, the manager at Whale Car Wash and Valet, says on an average sunny day they wash about 21 vehicles, and in the busy season – December – they have washed and polished up to 50 cars a day. Franck, however, says the business is weather dependent, and the expenses don’t stop. “You still have to pay your rent and salaries. If the business is not paying its way and things don’t change, you have to make decisions.” Franck, who lives in Hermanus and has other business interests in
Cape Town, says small businesses in general are struggling and things are getting tougher. Nick Altona-de Klerk from Adek, the real estate company situated at the Eastcliff Village Centre, and property owners of the centre, says the car wash has been operational since the centre was established in 2000. Altona-de Klerk assures the car wash, which is very popular with local motorists visiting the Eastcliff shopping centre, will continue and there is already someone lined up to take over the facility.
The Whale Car Wash and Valet service at Eastcliff Village Centre has closed down. Ac cording to Nick Al tonade Klerk from Adek, a new own er will be taking over shortly. PHO TO: KERRY VAN RENSBURG

The request for proposals to establish a public resort at the De Mond caravan park and adjacent land has seemingly fallen on deaf ears. The deadline for tenders expired on 30 May, and according to the municipality, no tenders were received by that date. The municipality published notices for the Request for Proposals to test the market’s appetite for financially sound and environmentally sensitive developers to enter into a long-term lease with the municipality to establish, manage, operate and maintain a public resort. The notice read that the resort (which includes erven 4831
and 5327, De Mond Caravan Park, as well as the adjacent land of Klein River Lagoon Park and a launching area along the river front) must cater for the needs of the broader public, including tourist groups and commercial interests through the availability of, among other aspects, accommodation and conference facilities. In accordance with the restrictive condition contained in the original Crown Grant of 1942, it states that the land may not be sold and may only be used for resort recreational purposes The affected role players will meet to discuss the way forward.
Abalone quota closure could be ‘poacher’s heaven’ ELBÉ VAN HEERDEN A massive increase in poaching could occur when the commercial abalone quotas are revoked on 1 August this year. This step will leave the 250 local, legal abalone divers and their families without an income. Shaheen Moolla, managing director of Feike, a Cape Town-based natural resources advisory firm, does not predict a pretty picture if the public protector does not urgently intervene in the sector, which falls under the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF). “Essentially, come midnight on 31 July, all of the quotas will be null and void as the reissuing of quotas has not been completed. They (DAFF) have been actively blocking any discussion regarding the abalone sector. “But rather than admit failure on their part, they are trying to solve the problem by revoking all of the quota holders’ rights. “There is no real solution here. The quota holders will have to approach the public protector as soon as possible and state their case. They will have to raise their voices and speak to the public through the use of the media to try and force the department’s hand. “We need our legal divers in the water,” says Moolla. “History tells
us that poaching increased after the last closure (of the abalone fishing sector) because there is no compliance strategy in place. “Between 2008 and 2009 poaching increased to about 4 000 tons per year. Poachers benefited hugely.” He says that of the 303 abalone quota holders nationally, about 250 are based in the Overstrand and each of them directly supports at least three people. He also believes that the abalone industry is not in such a crisis that the quotas need to be eliminated completely. “Traditional line fishery, rather, is in a state of environmental crisis and the proposed re-issuing of quotas for red steenbras is foolish. Steenbras is a collapsed line fish species the sale of which is prohibited. “The 303 abalone quota divers harvest approximately 90 tons (at least) of abalone worth nothing less than R250 to R350 per kilogram while steenbras catches have not exceeded eight tons since 2002 according to the department’s own records. “Not to mention that steenbras does not sell for anything more than R10 to R15 per kilogram,” Moolla says. There is huge uncertainty as to the future of the industry. “The department is refusing to speak to the quota holders, but more than that, this is an issue which should have

been addressed two years ago.” Local quota holders have in the meantime sent an urgent request to the Public Protector, Adv Thuli Madonsela, asking for intervention in the situation. The request states that: “In January 2014 DAFF reduced the abalone TAC by some 35% without properly consulting the right holders. “DAFF was advised (at meetings on 14 and 23 January as well as in writing) that this reduction would cause severe economic hardship (primarily to right holders, but also to the industry in general) and was requested to provide relief. Unfortunately to date no relief has been provided. “DAFF’s conduct to date and particularly its refusal to consult with quota holders is a violation of our rights to fair, rational and justifiable administrative action. “Further, the ongoing refusal to re-allocate or even discuss the status of our fishing rights is a further violation of our rights to just administrative action and our rights to earn a living as set out in the Constitution. “We accordingly request the urgent intervention of the Public Protector as our rights to earn a legitimate income from the harvesting of abalone, which rights have been in place for the past 10 years and may almost certainly now be unlawfully terminated by 31 July 2014.”

Report shows speeding in Kleinmond and drinking in Gansbaai During the mayoral committee meeting recently held at the Overstrand Municipality, the Overstrand Protection Services, Overstrand Law Enforcement and Overstrand Fire Brigade Disaster Management presented their quarterly monitoring report for January to March 2014. The number of accidents over the January to March 2014 period, compared to the same period last year was almost half – 28 vs 41, while the number of fixed-site speeding offences between January and March this year almost doubled – 12 566 vs 8 368. Motor vehicle offences over this period totalled 5 118, with a rand value of R630 200. These figures exclude speeding offences. Of the 12 566 speeding of-

fences, only 1 831 cases were processed in court, with a rand value of R1,335,747 M. Last year the number of cases processed was more, at 2 537, but the rand figure was similar, at R1,36 M. With the new municipal court on the horizon (HT 15/05/2014 New municipal court out of the starting blocks), which will mainly deal with the transgression of by-laws and traffic/motor vehicle offences, it is expected that this backlog in processing cases will decrease, and fines paid will increase, thus substantially boosting the coffers of the municipality. Motorists in and around Kleinmond are the biggest fixed-site speed offenders. See table. Law enforcement: January March 2014

Businesses urged to support Chamber KERRY VAN RENSBURG An economic survey currently underway, an overview of the past year, and a hint as to what is in the pipeline for the year ahead was presented by Mervyn Milner, president of the Hermanus Business Chamber, at the organisation’s annual general meeting on Thursday 22 May. The evening, which took place at the Hermanus Bowling Club, also doubled as the Business Chamber’s soup and sherry networking session. Milner began his annual report by saying it has been a frustrating year, and reminded members that the chamber belongs to them and not to the executive committee. “The Hermanus Business Chamber has experienced a highly active year as the local voice of business. We listen to our members’ needs and represent them at high level to voice their concerns or suggestions,” he said. The organisation is committed to networking, representation, assistance and business development. Milner expanded on these four aspects by saying that promoting service excellence is a focus point of the chamber. It offers many opportunities to improve service delivery and provides access to economic opportunities and grants from national and provincial level. It also enhances job creation, and currently more than 70 local unemployed people have been assisted with employment at local businesses through the Work and Skills Project, which is funded by the Western Cape government. Milner touched on the high profile speakers that the chamber had brought to Hermanus, as well as on the mandate they got from members to appeal against the proposed Sandbaai mall to protect the CBD. Economic survey Milner said the chamber is conducting an economic survey to determine a realistic economic evaluation of the area. Hermanus shopping trends is one of the topics of the survey and should show interesting results regarding local support and why local customers would buy “over the mountain” instead of locally. Feedback on these questions will provide guidelines for a Shop Local campaign that is being developed by local business people. The chamber is supporting this venture, which is being spearheaded by chamber members Talal Showaish Salem and Eunice Rademeyer. A questionnaire has been posted on the chamber’s website www.hermanuschamber.co.za and any business person can fill it in and submit their views electronically. They hope to complete the survey by 20 June. The chamber has a special programme to analyse the statistics and give a realistic view of the economic status quo. Membership Milner suggested that the chamber’s membership fees be increased to R100 a month. Talal Salem urged members to “support the chamber; it speaks for us. It is the voice of the business community and is not only an economic force, it is a social and political force.” Salem said a lot of serious businesses in Hermanus are not involved in the chamber, but when guest speakers are invited, everyone turns up. He believes it should be a prerequisite for business owners to be a member of the Business Chamber. In this way business credentials can be verified and recommendations can be made. Milner briefly indicated that the existing executive committee would be willing to serve another term. Goals for the next year: • Initiating an umbrella body – uniting key members of different bodies who are discussing the same issues; • Utilising Grey Power; • Boosting local support; • Marketing members more widely; • Interesting excursions; • Liaising with Overberg and Overstrand role players; • More well-known speakers • Responding to members’ needs.

SHEPHERD NDUZO SCULPTURES: Sculptures by master artist Shepherd Nduzo will be exhibited at Sumaridge Wine Estate during the Hermanus FynArts Festival from 6 – 16 June. Shepherd Nduzo, born in 1978 in Zimbabwe but presently living in Botswana, scours the bush searching for fallen trunks of ironwood trees (olea capensis), from which he imagines and then carves his sculptures. Ironwood is the hardest known wood in Africa. The tree is exceptionally slow growing and is known to live for 500 – 3 000 years. Shepherd’s fine eye for detail and his drive for perfection enables him to note idiosyncratic detail, such as women’s hairstyles, the checked design on men’s trou sers, patterns on the fabrics of women’s dresses or a turn of the head, whilst his overall romantic view of life creates timeless and emotionally charged images. He portrays the vibrant humanity of his own personal experience, often sculpting images of his wife and daughter, but also observes the daily activity within his own neighbourhood. Shepherd was awarded the top prize for sculpture at the 2012 Beijing Biennale and his work is found in numerous museums and in private and public collections.

All can win with new court Last week’s report on a new magistrate’s court refers. This would realise the long held aspirations of the court personnel, attorneys and the expectations of the public we serve. If, as proposed, it is built on the tennis court premises, then the police station can expand and use the court site to bring the detectives back and house the canine unit – a positive outcome for all. Security for in custody accused is much better with a subway to the new court! And the tennis players get more courts in a lovely area. However, the particular departments involved are not exactly known for speed and rationality. The Overstrand Municipality should be congratulated for their wise decision to assist the process, but a mere six months for Public Works to buy the land? Even with global warming, this glacier (Public Works) moves, well glacially, and will not respond in time, I am afraid. If they do get it right, I’ll eat my words on this page. Keep the pressure up, all stakeholders – we desperately need a new court, the police dogs need a home and Hermanus deserves better!
Why so many parkades? I have been a resident of Hermanus for over 19 years now. The issue of parking has been on people’s agendas for many years. So the municipality has spent millions on providing parking at Gearings Point, Marine Drive and the Dutch Reformed Church. Then they approved the building of three shopping centres with provisos that they all supply public parking: Checkers, Woolworths and Carriage Centre. This latest proposal to build a parkade in Long/Mitchell Street is, to say the least, bizarre and total overkill. Whilst the residents are in crisis about the proposed new mall in Sandbaai – which, incidentally, will provide an alternative shopping experience with hundreds of parking bays – surely we, as residents and landlords, should be focusing on how we can revitalise the core shopping area in Hermanus central. By allowing this parkade, we will be defeating the objective by cutting off the historical core from the new core of the town. But more important, who is footing the bill for this and wouldn’t this money be better used to upgrade the historical core of the town? Also, how much parking does this town need to cater for visitors for approximately 17 days of the year? We certainly need a serious rethink of where we are going with this town.

Paaie en sypaadjies ontsier
I WANDERED LONELY AS A CLOUD: This “spaceship cloud” hovered over Sandbaai on Saturday 31 May for about 20 minutes at around 12:30. A strong wind was blowing, but other than this cloud, the sky was clear and no sign of rain that came later in the afternoon.

BARNEY WELGEMOED
An appeal to help with Sparkle Kids project My wife Angela and I have been closely involved with the principal of Qhayiya Secondary School, Nkosilungile Lolwana for the last three years. Our sole aim is to empower young people showing potential. We try to create opportunities for them through raising funds via donations, bursaries and loans. We are soon departing on a trip to England and Europe (a wonderful friend paid for the tickets and all accommodation is covered by warm-hearted and concerned people such as Joke from Dutchies who has given us the keys to her flat in Amsterdam!), with the exclusive aim of trying to raise funds or at least an awareness for the Sparkle kids from Qhayiya (as well as some gifted kids without parents from Grabouw and Gansbaai). We hope to have at least twenty speaking engagements overseas in nearly as many days, where we will show our DVD and talk about what we do and about the results achieved by the students. We helped with the registration for courses and accommodation for the two top matric 2012 students from Qhayiya Secondary school, Anita Mfiki, (five distinctions) and Lungisa Qendu, (four distinctions). Both received R5 000 towards their study
needs from the office of Mayor Nicolette Botha-Guthrie. Siglinde von Maltzahn donated a sum of money to be used at the mayor’s discretion and Botha-Guthrie allocated funds from this contribution to Anita and Lungisa. Anita is studying chemistry at Wits and Lungisa is studying civil engineering at CPUT. To enroll at both the University of the Western Cape and Cape Peninsula University of Technology amounts to about R4 000 per student. Once they are enrolled, they can apply for bursaries and loans which is what we aim to help Sparkle Kids with. We assist with smaller expenses such as books, transport, second-hand laptops and repairs thereof, often food money as well. When selecting students, we look for two or three things in the young people. Firstly, they must be self-motivated. We are always at Qhayiya and available to talk to. This year we have identified a young man, Wandile Alam, as a Sparkle Kid. He is in matric and wants to study LLB next year. Secondly, the scholars must have realistic and achievable dreams and plans. Thirdly, we will only help if they want to study at accredited institutions.
Throughout the term we keep close contact, via e-mail and SMS, with all the Sparkle Kids who are currently studying, and we see them when they are in Hermanus or when we go to Cape Town. We keep an eye on their progress and this interaction means a lot to them. As you can see, all the efforts are hodge podge and through faith and conviction that everything will work out fine in the end ... (and if it doesn’t work out in the end, then it is probably not the end yet! - from the film, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel). We would like to appeal to the people of Hermanus and the Overstrand to help us with any contacts in England and Holland that may want to organise a “get together” of any format, large or small for us – to show our DVD and talk about the results of our work here. We do not ask for funds at these meetings, we hold them to create an awareness. To find out more and see the DVD, go to our website, www.sparklekids.co.za. We leave on 13 June and return mid July. The countries we are visiting are England, Holland, Sweden and Switzerland. Our contact details are: 082 654 4924 or email: angiekrynauw@gmail.com
THEO AND ANGIE KRYNAUW
Goodbye Hermanus To all the members of the Hermanus population, acquaintances and friends: I wish to extend my thanks for having the opportunity to work with you either through my connections with the Provincial Hospital, the Hospice and the public library, not excluding the Botanical Society and birdwatchers clubs, and last but not least, Hermanus Times, for responding to the many times used by me. A chapter in my life that brought me great joy, I have spent the last 24 years here and I wonder if the champagne air really does things to your psyche and health. Whatever it is, it worked for me. I am relocating to Cape Town. My children say it is time for me to come home. I wish you all a long and healthy life.

Say NO to proposed monstrosity in CBD Which bunch of clowns or secret subcommittee have decided that the monster “mall” in Long Street (HT 29/05/14) will enhance or revitalise the CBD or is in keeping with the heritage component of the historical core of the town? Is it the intention to cut off the west side of town from the “new” east side like a “Berlin Wall”? The sad little “Oh Crumbs” cottage will have no chance of survival as it will be encased in yet another “dead fish”. The row of quaint Edwardian shops (Beach House etc) will have no visual impact and the traffic flow to Pick n Pay out of Mitchell Street will be more of a disaster during peak times
as it has long been the preferred route of large delivery trucks SAB/CocaCola to Pick n Pay. Hermanus will soon boast more parking garages than CapeTown CBD. The only component necessary to revitalise the CBD is to restore the residential aspect and bring people back in the historical cottages and town houses (as has been done in Cape Town and other cities internationally). Not more shops and offices or parking garages or bricks and mortar. No, No, No! So, Hermanusites, stand up and say “no” now, not after the planned abomination is up and in our faces like yet another “dead fish”.

Thank you, baie dankie, enkosi Overstrand To the congregation of the Ethiopian Church of South Africa, Hermanus Parish under the parish ministers Patrick and Primrose Make: I would like to thank everyone who contributed towards the car wash as well as the Saturday lunch fund-raising event, which took place on Saturday 31 May in Zwelihle. We hope this won’t be the last time you will lend a helping hand to every one in need of your assistance. Mazenethole.

) I want to thank the lady (and I’m sorry I don’t
know your name) who stopped last Monday to help me when my car broke down. Also the two police officers who stopped to make sure I was okay and stayed with me till Supa Quick arrived with a new battery. A warm thank you to the staff at Supa Quick who arrived and helped me. I would like to thank you all for your concern and kindness. It’s nice to know you are all out there. – THE BEAL FAMILY ) Geluk OM! Doen so voort. – JP, VERMONT ) How selfish that the front page of this week’s Hermanus Times is Afrikaans only. How are Eng lishspeaking householders expected to know what this article is about other than the illustration in the middle of the page? It’s discriminatory. We are all ratepayers. Please repeat the article in Eng lish. Thank you. – ANNE CLARK ) Didn’t know that dogs were now allowed un leashed on the street. The only requirement is that the owner will be in “control” of them. Must be true as a very knowledgeable Englishspeaking gent in Malmok Street jogging with two Dober man/Rottweiler dogs told me so. Mag jy jare voorspoedig wees. She has cancer and no help. Horrible!

Hope you are returning as business new. But please, not as an Estate Agency! – ERIC ) I was resting my knee on a bench, when two young people came past.
En Maandag nog so 8 mm. Mooi kabeljoue is by die Plaat gevang.

Nuwe skool vir Hawston eers later vanjaar klaar
New school planned for Qhayiya The Overstrand Municipality approved the sale of land in Zwelihle where a new school will be built for Qhayiya Secondary, by the Western Cape Education Department. The school, situated on a portion of the remainder of erf 314 in Zwelihle, has been on the property for an extensive period of time. In November 2013 the Western Cape Government applied to purchase a portion of the erf to build a replacement school on the property. This request was subsequently changed to a request in December 2013 that the subject portion
of the property rather be donated to the department. This request was discussed, but as the municipal public library is also situated on the portion of property they applied for, it was recommended that the department at least pay for the replacement value of the library building in order for the municipality to relocate the library. This recommendation was accepted. The replacement value of the library building was determined at an amount of R2,2 million. According to the school, the project is earmarked to start in 2016.
It’s not too late to become a Masters athlete “You are never too old to take part in athletics. All you have to do is take the first step.” These are the encouraging words from Masters athlete Leo Benning, who started Western Province Athletics: Masters in 1975. He was the main speaker at a meeting at Hermanus High with the aim of generating support from locals to join the sport. “The pool becomes a lot smaller as you get older. A lot of athletes stop competing at school or later at varsity level, and never compete again. This gives athletes a much bigger chance to excel. “There are a number of people who started competing in athletics events much later in
their lives. Take for instance Sonja Rudolph, a local athlete, who had never taken part in athletics. She started very late in her life and even after hip replacement surgery is still taking part at the age of 85. Mavis Hutchinson from the Eastern Cape is turning 90 soon, but still has a number of records to her name. “As a Master’s athlete, I have seen the world. I have travelled to all the different World Championships and visited friends I made along the way. If not for Masters Athletics, I never would have travelled to Puerto Rico or Singapore.” Benning still competes in high jump, javelin and triple jump at the age of 80, and also takes part in road running, although it is more of a hobby.
Danie Burger founded the SA Masters when he returned from America in 1975 and later in the same year Leo Benning founded the Western Province Masters in Cape Town. BirdLife birding adventure to Peru BirdLife Overberg’s public talk on 9 June promises to be inspiring as Peter Greaves invites you to join in on a birding adventure through Peru. Peter is the administrator of the Birds in Reserves Project (BIRP), one of several bird monitoring projects at the Animal Demographic Unit (ADU) at the University of Cape Town. His love of travel – 69 countries and islands on all seven continents – complements his birding passion. He also enjoys taking fellow birders on his birding adventure trips and now has eight adventures from all over the world which he shares with fellow birders. Peter’s talk will briefly focus on the BIRP project, but then his talk will largely focus on birding in Peru. In September 2011 Peter flew via Buenos Aires to Lima to join Naturetrek on their 18 day Macaws and Machu Picchu tour. Coinciding with the end of that tour, Peter flew to Bolivia and joined another 18 day tour to search for some rare and endemic birds in this very new to birding country. Peru has a bird list of almost 1 800 while Bolivia has over 1 400. This talk will take us to all the major habitats of Peru, including coastal desert and prolific off-shore islands, the Amazon basin rain forest, Andes eastern slope cloud forest, and the high Andes at over 4 000 m including Machu Picchu. Bolivian birds include the famous hoatzin, sungrebe, Andean cock-ofthe-rock, macaws, parakeets, and parrots. The talk takes place at the Mollergren Park community hall at 18:30 for 19:00. Catering is at R70 per head. Remember to bring your own drinks and glasses. RSVP to Elaine at: mwjasser@mweb.co.za or call 082 455 8402.
Learn how to deal with the fear of violent crimes Anthea van der Pluym will be giving a free talk on the topic “How to deal with Fear” in Kleinmond today (Thursday 5 June) at 15:00. Anthea knows a thing or two about fear. She has been the victim of violent crimes more than once, including her father’s death during a farm killing, a family rape, assault and being caught in a violent riot. She is an author and inspirational speaker who has dedicated her life to helping others heal. “Our big- Anthea van der Pluym gest issue is the fear of going through these events. I will be speaking on how to get past the fear of having something happen to you and whether it is possible to prevent it. When we live in fear, our lives become limited.” Her latest e-book, Letting Go of Pain, Embracing Wholeness, was released earlier this year and deals with issues regarding violent crimes. She has written a number of e-books to date, including Plaasaanval Oorlewingsgids / Farm Attack Survivor’s Guide, which has been downloaded more than 1 600 times since it has been published. The book is available for free from www.smashwords.com. Anthea will be speaking at the Dutch Reformed Church senior centre in First Street, Kleinmond, and not in Hermanus as originally advertised. MOGAMAT KAMEDIEN
NATURE MATTERS Did you know: The common vlei rat Otomys irroratus is larger than a common rat, has shaggy hair and a rather short tail. They are so named because they hang out in marshes, streams and swamps. They feed on grass and reeds by biting through the stem near the base, taking the stem in their mouths, and then holding each end of the stem with a paw while eating short pieces. Their main use seems to be as food for raptors, snakes and other predators. Despite being rats, they are totally harmless and very cute. Feel lucky if you spot one.
This vlei rat was brought to Dr Anina Lee by her proud cat. She assures the readers that the creature was released directly after the photo shoot.

Bike and trike day On 30 May Hermannus Private School was part of Cycles in Nature day when Montessori schools across the globe cycled bikes and trikes outdoors. The idea is that children would ride their bikes and trikes around the school grounds. Molly Venter, principal of Hermanus Private School, said they decided to combine the day with road-safety tips given by the
members of the traffic department. Superintendent Steven Drury and traffic officer Morris Wana spoke to the children about being safe on the road and the children had a lot of fun trying on bike helmets. Wana impressed the learners by driving his motorbike onto the school grounds so they could see what a real traffic bike looks like.
Learners had the opportunity to knock on the helmet held by traffic officer Morris Wana to see how hard it is. Superintendent Steven Drury shows a learner at Hermanus Private School how to put on a helmet. PHOTOS: JANINE VAN DER RIET
Morris Wana surprised all the learners by ‘driving’ his motor bike on the school grounds.

U3A series highlights Galileo – the father of modern science This year is the 450th anniversary of the birth Galileo Galilei (1564 – 1564). The U3A is highlighting this historic milestone with their lecture series on Galileo which begins on 10 June. Galileo is generally known for his controversial assertion at the time that the earth revolves around the sun. He was tried by the Holy Office, then found “vehemently suspect of heresy”, was forced to recant, and spent the rest of his life under house arrest. However, his contribution to science was far greater than this
assertion. Stephen Hawking said of him: “Galileo, perhaps more than any other single person, was responsible for the birth of modern science.” Albert Einstein called him “The father of modern science”. He was in fact a physicist, mathematician, engineer, astronomer and philosopher. In the U3A’s three-part series on Galileo, speakers from the Hermanus Astronomy Society will discuss his life and work under the following titles: Galileo the man; Galileo’s contribution to science and Galileo’s contribution to astronomy.

LUXURY SALOON: JAGUAR XF WITH GROUNDBREAKING TECHNOLOGY
Upgrades galore for the Jaguar XF MOTORPRESS The latest iteration of the Jaguar XF medium-sized executive is now available at all Jaguar dealerships, boasting more ground-breaking technology than ever before. This takes the form of extended navigation, which combines two separate mapping packages as a single, integrated solution, to give Jaguar XF drivers an unprecedented course-plotting capability, allowing for safe and efficient travel. This applies not just in South Africa but also beyond the borders. Said Kevin Flynn, Managing Director of Jaguar Land Rover South Africa and sub-Sahara Africa: “The XF continues to offer a compelling blend of style, performance and refinement, and with the most recent update it remains a middleweight which will appeal to those who insist on the finer things in life. “For these people their time is one of the most important commodities and with extended navigation they can use time even more efficiently by getting straight to where they want to go, with minimal bother thanks to exceptional intuitiveness and usability, not to mention an impressive array of features. These include lane guidance and historical traffic information, the application of which can speed up one’s journey significantly. As well as extended navigation, the newcomer introduces additional convenience features; such as rear park aid for Luxury deriv-
atives, and reverse-park camera for Premium Luxury derivatives. The 3.0-litre diesel and 3.0-litre petrol models boast a subtle boot lip spoiler. This spoiler is optional on the 2.2-litre diesel and 2.0-litre petrol models, while a full aerodynamic package – which adds a revised front bumper, black grille with chrome surround, body-coloured rear valance and “R” style side sills – is also available. The Black
Pack – offered as a stand alone or in addition to the Aero pack – adds further gravitas thanks to the gloss black side window surrounds, black grille surround and black bootlid garnish. As far as the interiors are concerned, Premium Luxury models can be enhanced with the Sport Pack; which comprises heated and cooled front seats in soft grain leather, bright stainless steel pedals, and Jet Morzine treatment for
the headlining and the roof pillars. A television tuner and number of sound system and interior veneers allow each owner to create a custom look and feel. The MY14.5 XF range comprises eight models, with a choice of four engines: two turbo-diesels (2.2-litre four-cylinder and 3.0-litre V6), a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol with 177 kW, as well as the supercharged 3.0-litre V6 with 250 kW and 450 Nm. The flagship of the
range is the 405 kW V8-engined XFR-S, a heady blend of exceptional performance along with superb dynamic ability. The slightly less dramatic and marginally slower 375 kW XFR remains available. “The XF range has been the Jaguar brand’s mainstay for a number of years and with this latest round of changes will continue to play an important role in our model line-up,” concluded Flynn.
This spoiler is optional on the 2.2litre diesel and 2.0litre petrol models, while a full aerodynamic package – which adds a revised front bumper, black grille with chrome surround, bodycoloured rear valance and “R” Style side sills – is also available. PHOTO: MOTORPRESS

The WRX and WRX STI rating by the IIHS continues what has become a traditional award for the Subaru brand. PHOTO: QUICKPIC
Subaru WRX scoops top safety award QUICKPIC With exactly one week to go before the all-new Subaru WRX makes its South African debut, the 2014 Subaru WRX and WRX STI have been awarded the 2014 Top Safety Pick Award by US crash test giant, the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS), for good performance in each of the Institute’s crashworthiness evaluations, including the small overlap front test. This is the first time that the WRX and WRX STI have been rated by IIHS, and the rating serves as a continuation of what has become a traditional award for the Subaru brand. With the addition of the 2014 WRX, Subaru now has six models that have earned 2014 safety awards from IIHS – three with Top Safety Pick and three with Top Safety Pick+ ratings, including its Legacy sedan and Outback models withoptionalEyeSight®.Subaruhasmore2014 IIHS Top Safety Picks than any other brand. The Subaru WRX with Symmetrical AllWheel Drive™ forms the base of the brand’s halo performance model line and comes standard with a 2.0-F turbocharged four-cylinder engine (197 kW), mated to a six-speed manual transmissionasstandard–withSubaru’sSport Lineartronic™ CVT also available. Safety equipment includes seven airbags, ABS with EBD and BAS, VDC (Vehicle DynamicsControl),ESC(ElectronicStabilityControl), TCS with LSD (Traction Control System with Limited Slip Device), ISOFIX child seat anchors and Subaru’s Ring-Shaped Reinforcement™ body structure, incorporating the use of super-high-strength steel which dissipates energy during a crash. “Safety is one of our brand tenets and we are extremely proud to have earned a Top Safety Pick rating for our performance models,” says Subaru SA marketing manager, Ashley Lazarus.

The DOGS played an individual Stableford (log) on 3 June at Arabella. It was familiarity which won the day at Arabella as Twitcher Graham on his home track pipped guest John on the back six. As the wind got tougher the tough got windier and a number of promising scores were destroyed after the turn. Well, it could have been the wind or possibly the price of the toasted sandwiches. Several players got the wind up waiting in the bar to see if anyone would score less than them but it was the man whose surname no one can remember who finally saved a few blushes.

– INVIC

A total of 780 keen and eager hockey players from 16 different schools took part in the Hermanus Primary Annual Hockey Tournament on Saturday 24 May. At times the wind was very gusty, but this did not stop them from giving their best and putting their hockey skills to practise. Each team played at least four matches and it was pleasing to see the good sportsmanship amongst the players. The children played excellent hockey
and were greatly encouraged by the large number of spectators cheering them on. The organisers would like to thank Francois Eloff from Sanlam and Albert Myburgh from Overberg Agri who were the main sponsors of the day. The school would also like to thank Engen, Fruit and Veg, Hermanuspietersfontein, Spookfontein, Ataraxia Wines, Hamilton Russell Vineyards, Restless River Wines and Mrs M Snyman for their generous donations. – ANN GROENEWALD
