Skinstad for Overstrand CILENE BEKKER
The Overstrand is the first region in the Western Cape to have its own tourism ambassador, and Mayor Nicolette Botha Guthrie expressed pride in being the pioneers of this programme. With the mayor is Bob Skinstad, Overstrand’s Tourism Am bassador, and Suné Greeff, tourism manager at Overstrand Municipali ty, at the launch event at the Cape Royale luxury hotel in Cape Town on Monday. “We know Bob will have a great time en joying the activities and events in our area while promoting, talking and tweeting about our beau tiful destination at various platforms locally and in ternationally,” said the mayor. he Overstrand is the first region in the Western Cape to have a tourism ambassador in the form of ex-Springbok captain and rugby commentator Bob Skinstad. Discussions about the possibility of appointing an ambassador started over a luncheon at a wine estate in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley between representatives of the Overstrand Municipality’s four tourism bureaus and Wesgro, the Western Cape official tourism, trade and investment agency. “Wesgro has played an intermediary role between the Overstrand region and Bob, bringing together the two parties with the objective of leveraging Bob’s celebrity status and large network of social media followers to drive awareness of the region,”said Wesgro CEO, Nils Flaatten, at the official launch of the Tourism Ambassador programme. The function was held at the Cape Royale luxury hotel and spa in Cape Town on Monday. “Bob will be experiencing all the Overstrand has to offer, from shark cage diving to whale watching, wine tasting and horse riding, and be able to promote these activities from a personal perspective. It will also be fantastic to have someone who is as well known as he is, attending events such as the Whale Festival or the Blues Music Festival in Kleinmond.” In keeping with tradition, Skinstad will take part in the Stanford Boxing Day cricket festival as he does every year. And “hopefully this year the added incentive of being the Ambassador of the region will bring me luck with bat and ball in hand”, he said. “Cricket is not my forte, and one time Schalk Burger hit four sixes in a row off my bowling.”

Skinstad also shared a tempting thought in jest about shark cage diving and some international rugby referees, saying perhaps one can introduce non-cage shark diving for some of the referees. He said he is excited to take up his role as ambassador. “I spend many happy weekends enjoying all this area has to offer.” His own parents and his in-laws live in Hermanus. Skinstad spent family time here in Onrus, Stanford and Gansbaai as a toddler of four. These happy memories were rekindled during his days as a student at Stellenbosch University. “I had to stay back at the university to swot for a her (a re-examination) and asked a buddy of mine, who was also hanging around during the holidays, “Have you also got a her?” The friend replied: “Boet, the only
her I’ve got is Hermanus. Do you wanna come spend a weekend?” In a more serious vein Skinstad explained his take on the ambassadorial role. “It is not a poster-boy role. It is a volunteer position and I am doing it because I believe this region is one of the biggest assets in South Africa. It has so much to offer and I will work hard to make sure everyone around the world knows about it. “I am delighted to be a part of this drive and have a deep passion for this area and aim to help it grow and prosper.” Skinstad is keenly involved in many sports including golf, cricket, surfing and cycling, all of which are available in the area. He also enjoys swimming with his daughters, walking on the cliff path with his wife, and playing cricket on the beach with his son.
Solomzi Madikane, Overstrand Municipality: director of Local Economic Development and Tourism, said the Tourism Ambassador Programme would play an important role in increasing and building a positive brand including the overall destination image of the Cape Whale Coast. “Bob will be introduced and exposed to some of the Overstrand’s local events and festivals and partaking in a variety of activities, giving him the opportunity to spread the word about this beautiful destination at local and international platforms,” Madikane added. Flaatten concluded by saying that Skinstad has committed to the ambassador programme for a year, and that it is the intention of Wesgro to learn from this agreement, and then replicate it in other areas to benefit tourism.

Shoplifters target fine fragrances KERRY VAN RENSBURG A theft took place at the Edgars Hermanus department store on Tuesday 22 October at about 14:00. Kyle Nero, the assistant store manager confirmed that three women, working together, stole between R28 000 and R29 000 worth of merchandise which they concealed in their handbags. The only items they took were international fine fragrances. Nero says they were sophisticated enough to know how to bypass the store’s security panels so that the security system would not pick up the security tags on the stolen merchandise. He said the women had a getaway car outside the Hermanus Station Centre. It was, however, parked on a red line and a woman in one of the apartments, unaware of the theft going on inside Edgars, photographed the car, a VW Polo. The photo was given to the police. Two of the women left the store, followed by a security guard who managed to push one of them over and retrieve some of the stolen items. The two women managed to get in the car and drive away. The third woman who was concealing merchandise in the fitting room, was kept in the store and the police arrested her on a charge of theft. She is in custody.

ATM safety tips for festive season There has been an increase in the number of ATM incidents reported by residents in and around Hermanus. These include attempted robberies, fraudulent activities at ATMs and suspicious-looking people loitering in the vicinity. With the festive season around the corner, criminals are getting desperate and careless and will take chances to rob innocent residents and visitors, says Lieutenant Fadila September, spokesperson for the Hermanus SAPS. Hermanus SAPS issued these safety tips for ATM users: ) Always be alert and conscious of your surroundings when using the ATM. ) Never give your card or pin (personal identification number) to anyone, for any reason. ) Don’t write your pin number on the card or anything that is kept with the card. ) Do not insert your card until asked to do so on the display screen. ) Never use an ATM with a blank screen and, if the ATM is obscured from view or poorly lit, leave immediately and
Shop owner exposes brazen tactics of con artist The owner of the biltong shop at the Hermanus Pick n Pay Centre was targeted by a female con artist recently and wants to use his experience to warn others. He was not at his shop at the time of the incident. His shop assistant was minding the store on 8 October when a woman arrived and said she was there to collect money from the owner for bedding and linen he had ordered. The assistant said he was not there and she knew nothing about the order. The woman then pretended to phone the owner and talk to him. According to the shop owner, the con artist

The owner maintains he did not order any linen or bedding and the con artist did not phone him to get authorisation for the payment. He also owns a biltong shop in Gansbaai and the woman seemed to know quite a lot about him, which he found disturbing. The woman’s visit was captured on the centre’s security cameras. He hopes that his bad experience will help business owners and others to be aware of how this con artist operates.

Keep your hand over the card slot to make sure that nobody can swop or take your card. ) Never accept help from strangers when using an ATM. You should also be wary of strangers asking for help. ) Criminals work in teams - one to distract you while the other steals your card or money. ) If your card is retained (swallowed) by the ATM it is advisable to phone your bank toll-free stop card line immediately and stop your card. ) Never allow a bystander to call the toll-free stop card line on your behalf, they could be tricking you into thinking your card has been stopped. ) Guards are placed at ATMs to discourage criminal activities and therefore cannot help you with transactions. If you need help, ask a bank official. ) It is advisable to set a daily ATM withdrawal limit at your branch.

Ton Vosloo shares investment insights CILENE BEKKER A modest investment of R50 000 in 1984 by Naspers resulted in the market capital of this Cape-based media group being worth R400 billion today. So said guest speaker Ton Vosloo, chairman of Naspers, at the annual investment presentation of PSG Hermanus held at the municipal auditorium on 17 October. With Naspers being in a closed period, Vosloo, who refers to himself as an ex-editor who became a businessman, said he was not in a position to reveal all. He centred his talk on a condensed history of the group, highlighting the successes over the past few decades.
These include the early starters, Die Burger (1915), followed by Huisgenoot two years later and then Landbouweekblad. “Interesting to note that all three of these publications are still around,” said Vosloo, adding with a wry smile “as am I, Koos Bekker (now Naspers CEO) and Cobus Stofberg (founder member of M-Net, and board member of Naspers). Years later in 1960 the group published its first English magazine, Fairlady, under the editorship of Jane Raphaely, at a time when political events such as Sharpeville and the Mandela trial occurred. Also in the 60s the Sunday paper, Die Beeld started in Johannesburg and then followed the daily Beeld in 1974. Vosloo was appointed editor in 1977, capping a career in journalism
that started way back in 1956. It was in 1983 that Vosloo was persuaded by the Naspers board to switch from journalism to management, fairly shortly after the advent of TV in South Africa in 1976, which changed people’s lives and Vosloo’s as well. “I asked the Board for R50 000 to launch a pay TV channel, and so M-Net was born. In 1984 I was appointed Managing Director of Naspers, and I brought in Koos Bekker as my special assistant to found M-Net with R50 000 seed capital. “The real growth of TV came in ‘95 which saw a switch over from analogue mode to digitisation. This meant the number of M-Net channels could expand. And the rest is history.”
Naspers’s digitised business (M-Net, MWEB, MTN, Multichoice - now collectively known as MIH), has now rolled out to 133 countries and is also moving further north in Africa across the equator. In Africa, Multichoice now has over 7 million subscribers. Naspers was listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in 1992 with a share price of R16. So, 10 000 shares would have cost R160 000. Nineteen years later, these shares are worth R26 M. Naspers today, said Vosloo, is the 8th biggest media business around the globe and is truly international. “A new Board announced this week will see representatives from the USA, Brazil, China and South Africa,” said Vosloo, reflecting “it has been a good ride for a journalist
who knew nothing about balance sheets.” Responding to questions from the floor, Vosloo summed up his time management style as follows: – Never take work home. – Network and mingle with people. Do not sit in the shy corner. – I don’t believe in wasting time. – I have never been a slave driver, and it is important to delegate. – Never hesitate to appoint people who are cleverer than you are. – Give colleagues a stake in the business. His concerns on the future of traditional news reporting: – No depth of real experience. – Youngsters can’t spell any more. – Not curious enough about the world. – Info overload.

PSG growth in Hermanus At the annual investment presentation of PSG Hermanus, Hannes Smuts, regional head, gave a business update, saying it has been an exciting year. “With regards to share prices, this year saw robust movement, so it has been a good one. But moving forward, my suggestion would be to take a slightly more cautious stance.” Smuts also mentioned that the conversion of PSG Konsult into a fully-fledged financial services company has now been completed. PSG Hermanus is also expanding. “We have grown our assets under management significantly, increased our capacity through new appointments and
will also be adding a new building to our premises next year”, Smuts said. Before introducing the guest speaker of the evening, Ton Vosloo, Smuts mentioned how important it is for PSG Hermanus to plough back into the community. Some institutions they support are Hospice, Overberg Arts, Hermanus schools, NSRI, Camphill, Institute for the Blind, and on the media side contributing a monthly investment advice column, FinMonitor, in the Hermanus Times. Smuts thanked all the clients for their support, some coming from as far afield as Swellendam and Worcester. .

WHALE WATCHING BOATS
5
How close is too close? HEDDA MITTNER Boat-based whale watching in Hermanus is a popular tourist attraction and while the feedback from those who have experienced it is overwhelmingly positive, there are also concerns that the disturbance caused by whalewatching boat operators may have a negative impact on our marine life. With the current whale-watching season in full swing, Hermanus Times recently received a letter from a resident who expressed concern about what was deemed “disturbing” behaviour by the skipper of a whale-watching boat in Walker Bay. Hermanus Times has also received similar letters in the past. While the operators themselves vehemently deny any wrongdoing, readers have accused local operators of “chasing away the very beauty that attracts tourists and pads the pockets of the boat owners”. The most recent letter reports an incident where the whale-watching boat advanced until it was “right on top of the whales” and “when the whales, now disturbed, began to migrate in the opposite direction to the drifting vessel, the skipper fired up the engin in a bid to pursue the fleeing whales.” An earlier letter from a reader also accuses a skipper of making straight for a pod of whales and
“running right over them... blatantly ignoring the rule to keep your distance from the whales”. The reader continues: “I cannot begin to express my anger and disappointment in this behaviour. As custodians of our oceans we should cherish and protect our marine life.” Other reports received from residents by phone and by letter refer to whale-watching boats operating within what appears to be the boundaries of the whale sanctuary. “It is with disgust and contempt that I observe the total disintegration of the agreements and legislation all made with the sole intention of preserving our whales,” reads another letter. “Whale watching boats from Hermanus enter the whale reserve at will and it would appear that no action whatsoever is taken.” However, one whale-watching boat operator in Hermanus who did not want to be identified, says there is considerable ignorance among the public as to the nature of the legislative framework within which they operate, and false accusations by the public could threaten the industry’s reputation. So what are the regulations guiding whale-watching boat operators in Walker Bay? Walker Bay was declared a Marine Protected Area (MPA) in 2001 to serve as a whale sanctuary under Section 43 of the Marine Living Resources Act (Act No 18 of 1998) from
1 July to 15 December every year. In addition to the provisions of Section 43, regulation 58 published under Government Notice no R 111 of 1998, which pertains to the protection of whales, also applies. This means that no person is allowed to operate any fishing boat, vessel, jetski, kayak or craft of any kind within the MPA without written permission, with the exception of any legally permitted boat-based whale-watching vessels, which may operate subject to the relevant permit conditions and the closed areas for boat-based whale watching, as published in Government Notice No 417 of 2000. The whale sanctuary stretches from the Westcliff beacon near the New Harbour to the Gansbaai Harbour. There are only five whale-watching boat operators in Walker Bay with legal permits – Southern Right Charters, Hermanus Whale Cruises and The Whale Watchers, all based in Hermanus, Ivanhoe Sea Safaris in Gansbaai and Dyer Island Cruises in Kleinbaai. Phillipus May, the manager of Hermanus Whale Cruises, says they have to adhere to very stringent regulations and re-apply for their permit every year. “I can’t speak for the other operators, but we certainly do not harrass the whales,” he says. “Our skippers are well-trained and know how to approach the whales. We do not encroach on the

Boatbased whale watching is becoming an increasingly popular tourist attraction in Hermanus. PHOTO: THE WHALE WATCHERS 50 m zone – if we did, it would only chase the whales away. When we keep our distance the whales often approach of their own volition as they are playful and inquisitive creatures.” Nina Cronjé, manager of The Whale Watchers, confirms that they are “whale watchers, not whale chasers”. She says it is almost impossible to harrass a whale as they will simply swim away if they do not want to be bothered. They are careful, she says, to approach the whales in the correct way and not to box them in. “There is good cooperation between the different operators,” she says. “The skippers are in constant contact and operate with mutual respect. No more than two boats will approach the same whale or group of whales at the same time. “The second boat will always hold back, and once the first boat has had 20 minutes, it will make way for the
second one. We are careful not to transgress any regulations as none of us can afford to lose our licences.” Cronjé says they use GPS-coordinates to ensure that they never operate within the whale sanctuary. “But because there isn’t a wire fence cutting through the ocean, from land it could possibly look as though a boat is within the sanctuary while it is in fact on the perimeter.” She says there are times when the wind makes it dangerous to stick to the boundary. “It can happen that we have to cut a corner of the sanctuary in order to get our passengers back to the harbour safely.” When approached by the Hermanus Times for comment, Southern Right Charters declined to respond. ) For more information, visit www.cometcorp.org – the website of SABBWWA, the South African Boat Based Whale Watching Association.
What are the regulations? The regulations for the management of boat-based whale watching in terms of the Marine Living Resources Act, 1998, include the following: . No person in charge of a vessel may – except on the authority of a permit – approach closer than 300 m to any whale. . Permit holders may not come closer than 50 m of any whales or dolphins (cetaceans) or allow vessels to drift within 50 m of them. The whale may, however, be allowed to approach the vessel closer than 50 m of its own accord. . When approaching or leaving cetaceans, operators must move at a slow “no wake” speed of less than 10 knots. . All approaches should be made from a parallel direction, slightly from the side and not directly from
the rear or head-on. . Whales shall not be encircled, separated from other animals, or the vessel placed within the middle of a group of whales. . The cetaceans must be permitted to control the nature and duration of the interaction, including any close approach to the vessel. . The duration of the close contact (<50 m) should be limited to 20 minutes, while the total duration of contact (<300 m) should not exceed 30 minutes. . The same whale or group of whales may only be revisited a maximum of twice in a day, with a minimum of 3 hours between visits. . Approaching cow-calf pairs closer than 300 m is forbidden. Should this accidentally occur, the vessel must leave the area at a constant “no wake” speed.

Act responsibly to preserve our heritage The southern right whales that visit our coastline each season are our pride and joy and visitors flock to Hermanus to get up close and personal with them. This week we cast a spotlight on the boatbased whale watching industry, which is governed by very strict regulations. In order to retain their permits, operators know better than the general public the distance they need to maintain from the whales, and where they may and may not go, in order to observe and not disturb them. This industry is a significant draw card for tourists who wish to experience the magic of being close to these majestic animals. Whether private individuals or a commercial enterprise, we all should act in a responsible manner to preserve our natural heritage.
Please do not rob innocent people Thank you Michael Slinger, to your security team, Capital Award Response, for your alertness and manner in stopping theft near the tennis courts this past week. My gratitude extends to Jacques de Villiers for promptly tending to this matter. My address goes to all the desperate and destitute people – please folk, do not steal, do not rob innocent people. We do want to help you as far as we are able. Families that are already poverty-stricken suffer when temptation to do crime wins and puts a key family member behind bars. Those struggling at this moment would do well to enquire where the soup kitchens are and to also bring their special needs to the attention of their church.

Skincare: know the risks In the light of the woman who landed in our Mediclinic recently with burn wounds all over her face after having a glycol peel and two more clients who had severe reactions, (one close to anaphylatic shock) at an established salon, and a few little new shops advertising and promising things that only doctors should and are allowed to do, the innocent public should be warned. A number of doors have opened recently welcoming our unsuspecting public into the realm of various so called beauty treatments (laser, fat freezing, skin peels, skin needling and the list goes on weekly). These treatments all carry risk and are sometimes performed by therapists who have minimal training and no statutory regulatory body. This means they may have had anything from a weekend’s training to a two-year diploma. None of these courses are accredited by the Health Professions Council. The therapists doing these procedures without medical supervision also carry no malpractice cover. So enter, but before you submit to the treatments ask: What are the risks? What is the level of training, and qualification of the therapist or doctor? Is a doctor available on the premises and do they have insurance to cover them if things go wrong? Who, if anybody, is going to treat the complications that may arise?

Trees – investing in quality of life in Hermanus How fantastic that the municipality has seen the need to plant trees in many places along the R43. The responsible municipal department and the businesses who have contributed deserve the highest acknowledgement and thanks for their efforts. Please can we have more trees in all our suburbs. All involved have shown that it is not only the sea and the coast that are important to Hermanus but that the greening of the town adds to our appreciation of nature, whilst at the same time adding value to our town as a desirable place to live. This also leads to an appreciation of property values and so benefits all of us. It is a scientific fact that trees, shrubs and flowering plants, and the birds and insects they attract, all add to our quality of life and help to speed our recovery from
illness. Green nature relaxes us and allows for stress to unwind, thereby lowering blood pressure and heart beat. This increases our lifespan according to a recent study done in Japan. From my own experience I would recommend that the municipality form a nature and environment commission where both professional and municipal experts and the local population can meet and discuss matters of common interest in improving our environment. A commission of this nature would be an unbiased, politically neutral way of deciding “common cause”, and common cause is what binds us a people and improves our understanding of the quality of life we all strive for.

Wind turbines increase CO² emissions I would like to respond to Mr Campbell’s letter in your issue of 17 October. His comment would be true if only a small number of turbines were going to be installed, but once the number becomes meaningful the situation changes completely. Wind turbines require backup power equivalent to their full theoretical output to cover times when the wind does not blow. Therefore the carbon footprint of the back-up power generators has to be added to the carbon footprint of the wind turbines. It is not an either/or as Campbell suggests. Campbell gives a figure of 9 gms per kWh as being the footprint for wind and 175–230 gms per kWh as being the footprint for coal “with carbon capture”. (As far as I know there are as yet no coal-fired power stations with carbon capture but let that pass.) Let us assume that Campbell’s lower figure for coal is correct. It follows that the carbon footprint for wind turbines is 9 + 175 = 184 gms of CO² per kWh compared with 175 gms per kWh for coal fired. Campbell was only concerned with the carbon footprints of the construction materials etc which he has presumably amortised over the lives of the plants. He has ignored the CO² emitted from the fuel powering the backup generators which, in the case of coal-fired generators, have to be spinning even when the wind turbines are operating at maximum output. (They can’t be switched on and off at short notice.) On average this works out at about 30% of the CO²
that would be emitted when a generator is operating at full capacity. Using Eskom’s statistic this would be 1000 x 30%= 300gms per kWh. Thus even when the wind turbines are operating at full power they result in a total carbon footprint of 184 + 300 = 484 gms of CO² per kWh. And when the wind is not blowing and the coal-fired generator is running at full power the result would be a total footprint of 184 + 1000 = 1184 gms per kWh. If we assume that the wind turbines are 20% efficient, then the average emission from the backup coal generators will be 800 gms per kWh which when added to Mr Campbell’s figure of 184 gms per kWh totals 984 gms per kWh. The reduction in CO² compared with coalfired on its own is thus negligible and the cost is enormous. Needless to say the reality is much more complicated than this because the backup generators may be fuel-hungry gas turbines or even small diesel generators as are now having to be installed in the UK to cope with the problem. But the above generalisation explains why, in the real-life case of Ireland, it has been found that all the wind turbines installed there have not reduced CO² emissions and it is now recognised that if they install more wind turbines they will actually increase CO² emissions. For this reason they are not a sustainable form of energy unless they are backed up with a low-carbon source of power such as hydro or nuclear.

Great service all round I recently stayed in Hermanus at the Hermanus Dorpshuys Guesthouse for a weekend. While in Hermanus, we dined out, visited some wine farms and just enjoyed the beauty that Hermanus has to offer. I am sending this email as I would like to congratulate Hermanus on the striking emphasis on good service which I experienced all round. Everywhere we went whether it be a petrol station, wine farm, restaurant, gift shop and of course the guesthouse itself, we were made to feel extremely welcome and the level of service and friendliness far surpasses anything experienced in Cape Town. Well done Hermanus! I will definitely return.

Expensive lesson learnt with on-line sale My daughter, living in Kwazulu Natal, recently sold an item on Gumtree for R4 500. She insisted that the money show in her account before allowing the courier to collect it. Only a day after collection was she notified by the bank that the deposit was refused. The buyer had deposited a cheque at the ATM into her account and it had bounced. On contacting the bank and their fraud department, she was told that “they could do nothing”, but that in future she must allow a 10-day period before sending the item. Apparently only a cash deposit is guaranteed. If a cheque or an EFT payment is made, it can be reversed within seven days. A very expensive lesson!

My ma is 76 jaar oud.

Ons is daarvan oortuig dat Sandbaai eersdaags weer so netjies sal wees. Ek bedank graag mnre.

Jo-Anne Otto, Principal Communications Officer, Western Cape Government Health, responds: Thank you for the opportunity to address the concerns with regard to waiting time in the Hermanus Hospital Emergency Unit.

It is difficult to answer a query of this nature in a public forum. Western Cape Government Health is bound by the rules of patient confidentiality, therefore the patient’s condition will not be discussed, however, the waiting time will be addressed. The patient was admitted to the Emergency Unit at 10:30. After being evaluated, it was established that her condition, although requiring medication, was not life threatening. The evaluation technique that all Western Cape Government Health facilities use is called a triage system and is international practice. All patients are evaluated upon their arrival at an emergency centre and depending on the seriousness of their condition the patient is allocated a level of emergency. A relatively minor ailment such a pimple is allocated as green, this patient need not wait at the facility, but can, if preferred, visit his local clinic for treatment.A patient is coded as red when their life is in danger. These patients will always be treated first, even if the ‘green’ patient has been waiting for a longer time. The patient in question was coded as yellow and required medical intervention. The Emergency Unit at Hermanus Hospital was, as indicated in the letter quite busy that morning. Staff were required to deal with several emergencies that needed urgent attention. According to the patient notes, staff members checked on the patient and her son several times during the waiting period, explaining to them that they would like the doctor to examine the patient to confirm diagnosis and prescribe treatment. The patient was treated, diagnosed and medication issued by the time they left the facility at 2:30. In total they spent four hours at the facility. Although this amount of time is well within the range of time allocated to acceptable waiting time for patients with a non-threatening illness, the hospital does apologise to the patient if she experienced any discomfort during this wait. We also acknowledge that as a patient, waiting for treatment when one is not feeling well is never pleasant.Western Cape Government Health encourages members of the public who develop minor conditions such as colds, ear infections and the like to seek assistance at their closest clinic, where the staff are trained to treat and diagnose minor illnesses. It is vital that children and the elderly access treatment for minor conditions early on so that we can prevent more serious conditions from developing.
Thank you, Windsor Hotel, for charity On behalf of the Zwelihle Apostolic Faith Mission (AFM), I’d like to say thanks to Mr Blake Albert for opening the doors of the Windsor
Hotel to accommodate our guest speaker of our conference from the Eastern Cape.

Prompt action impressive Our daily visit to Grotto beach via the pathway over the old Rivera Hotel/Piet se Bos, required a crossing of the tar road linking the car parks. Regrettably, the speeding drivers exposed our two small grandchildren to unacceptable risks, which were further exacerbated by the parking bays that obscured one’s vision. I approached various relevant parties to seek an acceptable solution, but to no avail. I then decided to escalate the matter to the office of the mayor. To my surprise and delight, and very unexpectedly (given the workload demands of his office), Deputy Mayor Pieter Scholtz visited me at our home, and then accompanied me on our walk, to asses the problem first hand. The honourable councilman, satisfied that the risks were in-
deed unacceptable, immediately assured me that this matter would receive appropriate attention and solution. It is indeed gratifying, and a matter of pride, that I confirm the matter was effectively resolved – the “problem car park bays” were removed, and a pedestrian crossing was painted onto the road surface, which will make this crossing so much safer for all. We now need to alert drivers of the need to drive slowly and with care. I believe residents of Hermanus can be justly proud in the knowledge that our awesome town is managed under the very caring and capable hands and leadership of our deputy mayor, the honourable Mr. Scholtz.

Help make little hearts happy this Christmas With the Santa Shoebox Project 2013 drop-off days set for Friday 25 October and Saturday 26 October, the community of Hermanus is busy packing shoeboxes that will bring a smile to the faces of the under-privileged and vulnerable children they are meant for. According to Overstrand Santa Shoebox coordinator Wendie Cleary, a local retirement village will be dropping off 58 boxes, a leading hotel in the area is doing nearly 50, and Hermanus High School about 40. She says the charity has received amazing support with approximately 120 000 boxes pledged nationally. The target for Hermanus is 570 boxes, although approximately 650 boxes have been pledged. Shoeboxes filled with practical and fun goodies that will bring a smile to a child’s face this Christmas, must be dropped off at the Wine Village in Hemel-en-Aarde Village on Friday or Saturday.

Zip line saga In the early 1920s my grandfather went down to the Old Harbour with his daughter to watch Bill Selkirk land what was most probably the biggest fish ever taken on rod and reel. The battle raged for about six hours as he traversed the rocky shoreline. Sadly this part of the museum area has now been ceded to private business to accommodate their zip line gantry. It is a great pity that this particular site, adjacent to the bokkems bollard, has been chosen for this venture. In Hermanus folklore this is almost hallowed ground. An even bigger gaff is that discriminatory and threatening signage has been erected at this gantry denying public access. I hope however that a barrage of bold signs in at least three languages and even a pictogram be erected around this site to protect those who do not understand the English language.

Elizabeth du Toit, manager of the Old Harbour Museum, stands by the response they provided with regard to this issue, which was published in the Hermanus Times on 3 October (Zip line sign and structure queried): “It is not a permanent fixture but has to be taken down twice a year to confirm this. “The anchor structure is above the high water mark so it is on museum property,” Du Toit explained.

Oud-Boishaaiers klink ’n glasie in Hermanus
13

KERRY VAN RENSBURG Dennis Worrall, a political scientist, lawyer, businessman and founder of the Democratic Party, was the guest speaker at the U3A’s open meeting at the Overstrand Auditorium on Thursday 10 October. Worrall gave some insight on how South Africa rates in terms of an economically emboldened Africa, and although it was a huge subject to cover in a short talk, he delivered a pertinent message. He started by saying: “I have a strong feeling for Africa,” and went on to say: “the perception of Africa is changing.” Worrall says interest in Africa has reemerged in the past eight years or so. “Africa is important because Africa has minerals, has discovered oil, and is in the process of discovering gas in extraordinary proportions,” says Worrall. “Africa is important because of food security and has enormous potential in this respect. Africa has rich agricultural potential and the Indians and Brazilians are involved in agriculture in Africa.” Worrall says South Africa has the most diverse economy in Africa but can no longer be called the gateway to Africa as this can be challenged by several other capital cities in Africa.
Gathered in front of the municipality before the meeting were (from left) Mayor Nicolette BothaGuthrie, Dr Dennis Worrall, Dr Anita Worrall, Dr Robin Lee of the U3A and Barbara Pretorius who ar ranged for Dr Dennis Worrall to address the U3A. PHOTO: KERRY VAN RENSBURG
“Working with Nigerians, there is no chip ontheirshoulder, whichoneconstantlyexperiences in SA. “Big SA companies are investing in Africa, as there are no BEE complications and they are managing the corruption.” Worrall says sooner or later there must be a reaction to the greed that is a general thing in our society.” Asked if there was any hope for SA, Worrall responded by saying: “Emerging middle class people will increasingly assert themselves and this should be our focus.”

en by hul eertydse klaskamer hul sitplekke ingeneem.

Goodbye to principal and teacher
Pupils and parents of Hermanus High School, both past and present, are invited to attend the farewell ceremony for principal Werner Ladewig, who is retiring after 21 years at the school. Hermanus High will also be saying good-bye to Doug Palmer, who was a technology teacher

Hermanus Rocks celebrates its first birthday Hermanus Rocks is owned by Joan Masterson and Paul Winterbach and the idea was to have a venue where there would be something for everyone. One of their main focuses was to have some sort of activity for children. As a parent of triplets, Joan Masterson could relate to the need for more activities for children. When Hermanus Rocks first opened it was run by a mother and daughter team, but unfortunately the daughter flew the nest, as is the way of the world. An extensive search for different /exclusive stock has been difficult, but the owners feel that they have achieved their goal. There is a wide selection of jewellery, gifts for men and women, a selection of findings for those crafters out there, and of course, a selection of rough gemstones and crystals. They also have available handmade items produced by local crafters and are very pleased to claim
that their prices are very reasonable and affordable for most pockets. Hermanus Rocks strives to offer quality at bargain prices with friendly, helpful service, which includes free gift wrapping and ribbons. “It has been an interesting year, with plenty of eventful and memorable occasions. Educational too, as we are newcomers to the retail industry and all that it entails,” say owners Paul and Joan. “As to how we came by our name ‘Hermanus Rocks’, we can thank the lovely Theresa at the Hermanus Tourism Bureau. On that note, we would like to thank all our customers for their support. Our local Hermanus residents are the bread and butter of Hermanus Rocks, as they are the ones that sustain our business throughout the year. Thank you all, and we hope to have your continued support.”

Las Vegas egg expert shares his insight with local doctors KERRY VAN RENSBURG Boiled, poached, fried or scrambled, however you prefer your eggs, there is no denying that the humble egg is a standard feature on most breakfast menus. Eggs, as most of us know, are basically good for us and the person best qualified to talk about the benefits of eggs is undoubtedly US egg expert Dr Don McNamara. Representing the South African Poultry Association, Dr McNamara, who is from Las Vegas, presented a talk on How To Balance Nutritional Health Promotion And Disease Prevention to a group of local medical doctors in Hermanus on Monday 21 October. The presentation took place at the Marine Hotel. Dr McNamara has been executive director of the Egg Nutrition Centre (a nutrition research and health education centre of the United States egg industry) since 1985, is a fellow of the American Heart Association, the American College of Nutrition and many more professional boards; and also serves on the editorial board of several scientific journals. Dr McNamara has done extensive research in the field of coronary heart disease, cholesterol and lipid metabolism and lectures all over the world. He has been guest speaker for the SA Poul-
try Board on many occasions, targeting professionals who have an impact on what people should and should not eat. According to Dr McNamara’s presentation which is available on the SA Poultry Association’s website, eggs are an affordable source of high-quality animal protein as well as a nutrient-rich source of essential vitamins, minerals and functional components which contribute to human health. He maintains that while eggs do have a high cholesterol content, research has shown that dietary cholesterol has little effect on blood cholesterol levels and heart disease risk. Inclusion of eggs in a healthy diet can benefit eye health, promote healthy aging, and help address the inadequate intake of choline in the population. McNamara says those who eat eggs for breakfast feel fuller for longer and reduce the risk of overeating at lunch. According to Daniel van der Merwe, from MP Marketing, marketing representative for the SA Poultry Association, and facilitater of the talk at the Marine on Monday morning, South African’s eat, on average, just under three eggs a week, whereas in Mexico and Japan, they eat between six and eight eggs a week.

Still Cooking, like its predecessor, is a collection of recipes from people who have homes in Hermanus and it highlights the way we live and eat in this village by the sea.

Camphill School golf day teeing off soon The Camphill School golf day has become a regular event on the Hermanus golfing calendar, with lots of fun to be had and heaps of wonderful prizes to be won. Because most of them require one-onone attention, educating and caring for children with intellectual disabilities (many of whom are also physically disabled) costs a lot more than it does for mainstream children. The school is deeply indebted to the Hermanus community for its enthusiastic and sustained support and by means of participating in the golf day, the golfing members of the community can kill two birds with one stone (or golf ball): have fun and at the same time, help the school. The Camphill School golf day takes place on Thursday 7 November – so put together a four-ball, at a cost of R400 per player. To register and book a tee-off time or if you would like to sponsor a tee, or donate a prize, contact Genevieve at Camphill School on 028 312 4949, or e-mail school@camphill-hermanus.org.za.

Masters inspire students The Hermanus martial arts academy was fortunate to have for the first time ever two 9th Dan Black belts masters visiting our country from Okinawa, Japan recently. They are Hanshi Kikugawa (technical director OGKK) and Hanshi Okuma (vice technical director OGKK). They held various seminars at all the OGKK (Okinawa Goju
Ryu Karate Kyokai) Dojos in South Africa over the period. The students were very inspired and learned a lot from these masters. Jeremie Verdoodt recently graded to his Shodan (1st Dan black belt) in karate and Hanshi Kikugawa brought his okinawan certificate from Okinawa Japan. This was a big honour to receive it personally from these masters.
Keep an eye on Sandveld Bouers JAN-HENDRIK KOEGELENBERG Only two matches were played last week in the Pennypinchers business league, but it also set a platform of who the teams are to be on the look-out for. Hermanus Oldies took on the Roaring 40’s and this match never had a dull moment. Roaring 40’s batted first and as per usual John du Plessis got them off to a flyer. But then Oldies showed some class in the fielding department and also bowled a few good overs to restrict the Roaring 40’s to 82 runs in 10 overs. Hermanus Oldies then started their batting campaign with a few lusty blows and a vital drop catch in the middle of the innings that
gave the Oldies enough hope to secure a victory. With 1 run to win of the last ball, a schoolboy error crawled in the game and the Oldies won by means of a wide ball, a very exciting match indeed. In the other match Sandveld Bouers took on VW Hermanus. Sandveld started their campaign on a very high note scoring a massive 113 runs in 10 overs. The VW team made a few “D” shot selections and it were wickets that dominated and the VW team could not muster what the Sandveld had to offer. With some serious ex-cricketers in their line-up the Sandveld team will definitely be closely monitored by all the teams as they now top the leaderboard after the first round of matches.
Kleinmond 16 Oct – The two Dogs who barked loudest beforehand about the recently tined greens ended up vying for first place with “Huge” edging out “The Cheeseburger” – a case of selective memory loss? At the other end “Cruiser Thomas”, or “Pinky” as he is now known, held on to the hat having single-handedly revived interest in golfing fashion. This week we saw “The Naked Chef” in shorts crafted from a Molteno’s tablecloth and Pat of the Bushveld’s attempt to come out in pink was thwarted by his obligations to sponsor Fanta Orange. Scores: 39 Hugh Frangs, John Cheesbrough; 37 Andre Franken, Quentin Mitchell; 34 Doug Ross; 32 Alan Calder, Ian Newman, Gary Wentzel; 31 Alan Smith; 30 Gordon Wilson, John Horobin, Mannes van Zyl, Pat Dewil; 29 Dave Smith; 28 Dave Rade; 27 Barry (guest); 26 Peter Theron; 24 Peter Sulley; 23 Peter Thomas.

Hermanus 23 Oct: A beautiful day for golf at Hermanus saw the opening skirmishes in the annual international battle which culminates on 10 December. The home team introduced an ex-pro to shoot a brilliant 41 off scratch in a devious diversionary tactic to distract from the low-scoring shenanigans at the other end of the leader board. On course, the first shots were fired as “Mr. Bojangles” was taken out by a well-aimed bunker chip from “DOGSbody”. Off course, the “brandewyn” and beer flowed in the respective camps as the intimidation campaigns got under way. Scores: 41 George Sauerman; 39 John Tunstall; 36 Dave Smith, Peter Thomas, John Cheesbrough; 35 Fred Garrett; 34 Alan Smith, John Horobin,PatDewil,PeterTheron;33IanNewman; 32 Alan Calder; 30 Peter Sulley; 29 Dave Rade; 28 Hugh Frangs, Mannes van Zyl; 25 Sam Seal, Gary Wentzel; 24 Gordon Wilson; 22 Andre Franken – DAVE SMITH

Local cyclists excel in Swazi Well-known Hermanus cyclists, Hector Ross and John Leppan, recently clinched a converted 3rd place in the challenging Swazi Frontier Mountain bike race held in Swaziland from 10 – 12 October. About 200 professional and amateur cyclists from all over the world competed against each other in this gruelling race which was staged over three days starting at Hawane through Bulemba and finishing at Maguga Lodge. The participants had to navigate a challenging route, and cope with heat conditions in the vicinity of 47 C° in the shade. The duo was more than happy with their accomplishment and managed a well-deserved finish. They want to thank their sponsors, Mutual Safes & HJS, for making their participation a reality.

– LIZELLE MUNNIK
