‘Sewage water poses risks’ After tests compiled by the civil rights organisation AfriForum, De Mond in Hermanus is one of the 33 towns that do not comply with national standards in sewage water quality, which poses a threat to human health, food security and the environment. AfriForum is concerned about the poor management of water in South Africa, after collecting results from its national water monitoring campaign in 2014, known as the Blue and Green Drop Branch Project. More than a 100 AfriForum branches across the country participated in the Green Drop project, testing treated waste water. South Africa’s national water quality standards allow for 1 000 counts of E. coli per 100 ml of water in treated sewage. In three areas, Bela-Bela, Mookgophong and Hartbeespoort, the count was more than one million units, while the other towns averaged between 1 300 and 690 000 units. Hermanus’s E. coli count is 3 600 units. According to Julius Kleynhans, AfriForum head of environmental affairs, AfriForum is dealing with drinking water quality quickly, but sewage water poses significant health risks to communities across South Africa. “Negligence in planning, management and infrastructure maintenance are causing massive pollution of our water resources. This may pose
significant risks to human and environmental health,” said Kleynhans. “To date, 43 waste water treatment works in our project have complied with the minimum standards for waste water quality, while 33 do not comply,” Kleynhans added. South Africa’s national water quality standards allow for 1 000 counts of E. coli per 100 ml of water in treated sewage. Municipalities that did not comply include the following: Apiesriviervallei, Amanzimtoti, BelaBela, Bothaville, Brandfort, De Mond (Hermanus), Ermelo, Hartbeespoort, Heidelberg (Gauteng), Hecules, Kathu, Klerksdorp, Ladismith, Langberg, Lichtenburg, Joubertina, Magaliesburg, Modimolle, Mookgophong, Parys, Petrus Steyn, Phalaborwa, Potgietersrus, Scottburgh, Silverton, Springbok, Springs, Upington, Volksrust, Vredenburg, Witbank and Mafikeng. The Blue Drop results indicated 11 municipalities which did not comply with drinking water quality standards. Hermanus has complied to the national standards. “The project tested the quality of potable and treated water quality across the country to ensure compliance with national standards. The samples were tested by independent SANAS accredited laboratories,” said Kleynhans.

Entrants must also be able to swim and not have any medical condition at the time of going to sea. The tours are not too strenuous and can be enjoyed by all who are relatively active. “We feel very blessed to call this part of the ocean our office and would love to share it with people who have not had the opportunity to explore Hermanus from a different angle. After a busy tourism season we would like to give something back to the public who supports our tourism products by word of mouth throughout the year.”

Arabella rezoning approved
‘Disdain for CBD revitalisation’ In a letter received by the HT, signed E Welsh, the reader says the attachment to the significant “balcony building” between Main Road and St Peter’s Lane “should be of particular interest to the CBD Revitalisation committee as a demonstration of the actual disdain of business property owners for the aesthetics and heritage component of the CBD (yet again). “Without the participation and transparency of the municipality and para-municipal bodies like the heritage and aesthetics committee, your efforts, I regret to say, are a lot of hot air,” reads the letter. According to John Simson,
manager of building services at Overstrand Municipality, the building was approved in May 2013 and “anyone is welcome to inspect the plan at our office. The building is in the CBD which allows four storey buildings”. He says there was a departure granted which means there was an advertising process done by Town Planning, which normally is given to surrounding owners for comment. “The departure is in line with the new town planning scheme.” For more information on this consultation process, Hanneen van der Stoep can be contacted at Town Planning on 028 313 8900.

Walk 4 Water tomorrow For a donation of only R10 you can join Whale Coast Conservation (WCC) on Friday 21 March – Human Rights Day – on their Walking 4 Water stroll along the cliff path to the New Harbour in Hermanus. Walking 4 Water is a symbolic walk in support of the provision of clean water and sanitation, a basic human right. Walkers need to carry a 1F or 2F bottle of water and donations will be used to buy a rainwater tank for the Hermanus Child Welfare’s vegetable garden. The walk starts at the Old Har-
bour at 10:00 and proceeds along the cliff path through Westcliff to the New Harbour. “It’s 3 km of some of the best scenery in the world and should take about an hour, if you allow time to admire the view,” says Anina Lee, communications manager at WCC. The entire route is accessible to wheelchairs and pushchairs so bring the whole family along to share in the experience. As in past years, Hermanus Rotary will provide refreshments along the route. For more information call 028 316 2527 or 083 242 3295.

The Overstrand council has unanimously approved a rezoning application for a portion of the Arabella phase 2 development. The application entailed the rezoning and subdivision of portion 1 and the remainder of portion 3 of Hermanus River Farm No 542 in Kleinmond, in order to proceed with this long awaited development. This approval was gained on 25 February, after an amended application was submitted by Dennis Moss Planners and Architects on behalf of the Arabella Country Estate. A request to have the Overstrand Municipal Spatial Development Framework (SDF) amended in order to change portions of Hermanus River Farm from conservation-agriculture buffer, core agriculture and conservation 11, to core urban area and conservation 11, was granted. Jacques Volschenk, a senior town planner at Dennis Moss Partnership, says the rezoning of the property from agriculture zone 1 to subdivisional area, in accordance with the Land Use Planning Ordinance (LUPO) was also approved, as was the amendment of the site development plan and further subdivision of the subdivisional area. The subdivision will enable the development of 352 residential erven, 15 private parks, private roads, an amphibian reserve, private nature reserve, winery and restaurant, a 9-hole mashie golf course, a new golf clubhouse, golf academy, long-drive driving range, archery range, sporting oval, parking, and water purification works and elec-
trical substation. Volschenk says council also approved the registration of a home owners’ association, and certain necessary servitudes to create access roads. The Arabella phase 2 property lies in an environmentally sensitive area between the Bot River estuary and the Kogelberg Biosphere, and extends on both sides of the R44, adjacent to the existing Arabella Country Estate, which is regarded as the first phase of the Arabella development. Volschenk says their application to amend the Hangklip-Kleinmond SDF to have the private conservation area, rehabilitation area and intensive agriculture land use, rezoned to other urban related uses and private conservation area, has been forward to the Provincial Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, as the Overstrand Municipality cannot grant authorisation on this aspect of the rezoning application. Five letters of objection were received from interested and affected parties when the intention to amend the OSDF and the HKSDF and subsequent rezoning application, was advertised in July/August last year. The availability of water, the proximity of the development to the Bot River estuary and the impact on the environment, were among the concerns raised. A revised and updated EIA was submitted to province in February 2012. Volschenk says they are still waiting for the DEA&DP to give final approval for this phase of the leisure and eco-residential estate.

Camphill School launches security project A ceremony to mark the start of Camphill School’s security project was held at the entrance of Camphill on Friday 14 March. Learners and staff from the school welcomed Mayor Nicolette Botha-Guthrie and the group of guests gathered at the newly erected security gate, with a heartwarming song item. The mayor gave a short speech on how much the children of Camphill mean to her and said the security project was initiated to protect them and their teachers at the school, which is situated in the Hemel-enAarde Valley. She then ceremoniously opened the security gate, after which she took off her shoes, was handed a spade, and helped plant the first fence post. By the end of March, the whole security system should be up and fully functional. After an article appeared in the Hermanus Times in August last year outlining the in-
creasing number of burglaries, theft and vandalism at the school, there was an immediate response from individual residents of Hermanus, as well the business community. Spearheaded by Paul du Toit of the Wine Village, plans were immediately rolled out to fence the entire property and install an electronic security gate at the entrance. At that point, Diddi and Robert Johnson of Bona Dea Estate came on board and organised a dinner-dance in aid of the Camphill School security fence project. A sum of R377 000 was raised through this gala event. This, together with individual donations, is enough to install an electronic gate, 700 m of fencing and security gates on the actual school building. Elaine Davie, spokesperson for Camphill School, says: “Everybody at Camphill School owes a huge debt of gratitude for the circle of love that the people of Hermanus have built around the school.”

Emilia Knight won the big prize of a Le Creuset grill skillet set (with spatula, rame kins and a handle glove). From left: Lize van der Walt, Eunice Rademeyer and Emi lia Knight.
Love galore for Lize A fundraiser was held on Friday 14 March to raise funds for local artist Lize van der Walt. Lize was diagnosed with breast cancer in October last year and is currently undergoing chemotherapy treatment. When Eunice Rademeyer, owner of Goozi Kitchenshop, heard of the financial and emotional challenges Lize was facing, she quickly sprung into action and after chatting briefly to a few friends the idea of a coffee morning to raise funds took off. “Lize has always been a warm and kindhearted person and has often donated her time and paintings to schools and charities,” says Eunice. “In her time of need, we wanted to give back.” No-one was more overwhelmed by the outpouring of affection and donations than Lize, who during her speech couldn’t hold the tears back as she thanked everyone for their generosity. “I’ve learnt of the blessing cancer brings and the unconditional love of family and friends. I count my blessings every day with gratitude no matter how great or small. I look at things differently now and my brushstroke has a deeper meaning with every painting,” says Lize. Lize strongly advised all women to go for mammograms, especially after the age of 40. Lize was advised to go for a mammogram a year and a half before she was diagnosed. Because of personal problems at the time, she never got around to it. When she finally made an appointment, the cancer had already spread to one lymph node. This would have been avoided had she gone earlier. Elnette du Toit from Cansa gave an informative talk on the role a healthy lifestyle and nutrition plays in the prevention of cancer and Ezanne Newton Johnson, also a breast cancer survivor, shared her journey. Goozi thanks all the sponsors for their help in making this event a huge success – Function Hire, Best Days Event Planning, Yves Pudding & Pie, Chantal’s Nails, La Finesse, Cindy Barry and Emilia Knight. – DEEVRA NORLING

Keep gardens local and scrap the mall EDITORIAL COMMENT Let’s celebrate our human rights Friday is the first of several public holi days over the next month or so. While some will simply enjoy it as a day off from work, maybe sleeping late and catching up on odd jobs around the house, others will take advantage of the opportunity to enjoy a long weekend away. The true meaning of Human Rights Day on Friday 21 March is to remember the past and celebrate the future. Today, all South Africans have basic human rights and are entitled to basic human dignity. Why not celebrate this by joining in some of the events taking place this weekend in and around the Overstrand. Have a look inside the pages of this Her manus Times to see what is happening.
Please note that letters and SMSes may be edited or re jected, at the discretion of the editor. Letters with full name, address and contact details are required, but the writer may request the use of a pseudo nym. SMSes with full names will be given preference.
Dogs attack feral horse at Bot River estuary On 6 March we again experienced an incident of dogs on the loose going into wild pack mode, this time attacking a lone feral horse at the Bot River Estuary mouth. The attack was noticed at 08:00 and lasted until about 11:30. They were east of the bridge on the dry estuary bed. Calls were immediately made to Law Enforcement, CapeNature Rooisand and Animal Welfare. When Law Enforcement arrived around 10:00, the horse and two large dogs had been chased into the dunes by a resident with a whip trying to scare the dogs away. Law Enforcement had someone from Animal Welfare with them, who had a catch rope, but they were ill-equipped, having no other weapons or instruments to deal with the dogs. They were not prepared to follow the animals into the dunes because of the danger and lack of equipment. The dogs eventually abandoned their quest and disappeared towards Hawston. Law Enforcement found them on the Hawston main road and apparently took them to the Animal Welfare. CapeNature employees arrived on the scene after the dogs had left and the horse was heading towards Fisherhaven along the estuary. They examined the horse and said it appeared to be unharmed and healthy. This horse has been solitary for a while now and there were concerns that it may be sick. Given the previous instances of dog attacks on people, viz. the gruesome attack on Floriane Cutler at Middlevlei beach in 2012 and on children at Hawston beach in 2013, we appeal to the authorities to deal with these dogs and their owners. There is a constant threat from vicious dogs that are left to run loose and go into hunting mode.

I am moved to respond to the letter by a “realist” in your HT of last week. You have probably had a flood of letters. I am a permanent resident and before moving here 9 years ago had visited Hermanus on a very regular basis for over 30 years. Of course Hermanus has changed but unfortunately not all the change has been good. You can no longer leave your doors open and it is not only the baboons who take advantage of an open door. Most properties are being built on with very little thought to the wild life large and small that inhabited the space before every trace of indigenous plant and animal was removed by a mechanical digger. I live in Voëlklip and have one of the few gardens that are still truly wild. I have 36 different bird visitors, frogs, skinks, field mice, gol-
Sandbaai Mall: no mention made of movies Being a businessman in both the Hermanus CBD and Hemel-en-Aarde Village in Sandbaai and reading the recent letters in the Hermanus Times from residents regarding the proposed new shopping mall for Sandbaai, it is clear that there is still a complete lack of information on the proposed project – not only from the developer but also from our local government. As B Clifford so correctly states in his letter (HT 27 February 2014) – a mall development must form part of a bigger strategic plan for the Overstrand. Unfortunately, in the absence of such a plan or strategic direction, one will always be confronted by the typical knee-jerk reaction from parties potentially affected by proposals for unplanned and uncontrolled development or change. Similar reaction was seen following the proposed development at Piet se Bos. I am sure that all parties who lodged appeals against the proposed development have done so after having disseminated all available information (or the lack thereof). I attended the February 2014 meeting with Jannie Kruger, executive director of Retail Africa, and even after that meeting the waters were still very murky, be that purposefully to keep us in the dark, or that they have not completed their homework yet. What did emerge from the meeting was that the one anchor tenant in the proposed mall will be Checkers and that Retail Africa is in discussions with Woolworths as a second anchor. Their discussions with others include nationals like the Edcon group, suppliers of national clothing outlets such as Cape Union Mart, pharmaceutical group Dischem, etc. No mention was made of Game or Nu Metro. The developers had their initial proposal to develop a mall comprising of a footprint amounting to 38 900 square metres reduced to 27 800 square metres gross lettable area and I am of the opinion that
those who hoped for movies in the mall will be disappointed. From experience, the trading density (revenue generated by square meter) for a movie house is usually the lowest and the first to be sacrificed. Also regrettable is the fact that the developers have not identified any real major new sales offerings that the mall intends providing, resulting in basically a duplication of what we already have in Hermanus. The benefit of the mall therefore lies in the convenience factor of one-stop shopping, free parking and location for Sandbaai, Onrus and Vermont. This must be offset against the potential negative impact such as job losses/“creation”, impact on the CBD, effective utilisation of the land and many more. I believe we all agree that economic development and associated job creation is one of the critical areas to be addressed in the Overstrand. During the meeting with the developer, no guarantees could be given on utilisation of local contractors and labour save to say that about 1 500 temporary jobs will be created during the development phase. On completion of the project, around 600 to 650 permanent jobs will be created. Unfortunately this must be offset against potential job losses in the CBD resulting from businesses closing down or moving from the CBD to the new mall. And then there is also the question of how effective is the land use if only 650 jobs are created on 12 ha of land? Or put differently, one job per 185 square meters. Wouldn’t it be better, for example, to use that land for development of housing units for first-time home buyers in the price range say R400 000 to R800 000 per unit? It is clear that this is a development for the sake of development and does not form part of a bigger strategic development initiative. It requires a lot more thought, consultation and planning before all parties will buy into it.

INDIGENOUS TORTOISE: This parrot beaked padloper tortoise, endemic to on ly the South Western Cape, was picked up in Zwelihle by Roy Yedwa and brought to Northcliff, where it was pho tographed and then released on suitable veld. It is illegal to keep indigenous tor toises without a permit from CapeNature, even if they roam free in your garden, according to Jan van der Velden from Zoete Inval Traveller’s Lodge. “Padlopers need indigenous vegetation to survive. They do not last long if fed vegetables usually consumed by humans.”

den orb web spiders, grass snakes and anything else that would have existed on the property before we built. It is a shame that more care is not given to our natural indigenous heritage. As for the Sandbaai Mall. What are we thinking here? We already have shops closing every month. How are the small shops supposed to survive? Shops like Niel du Toit for instance. What a pleasure to enter that shop. You are greeted like an old friend and you are likely to find what you could not find anywhere else in Hermanus. The owner himself is often to be seen taking his turn on the till. We do not want to become another Plett. I hope that there are more residents out there that think like me and “the realist” who will support that sentiment.

‘The holy cow alive and well and bellowing all night long’ I wonder how many people were walking around grumpy and angry with bags under their eyes on Sunday 16 March. I certainly felt very ill. In fact I would rate a combination of lack of sleep plus the rage caused by being woken throughout the night by loud echoing music and someone shouting through a loudspeaker as a pretty high stressor, and we all know what such stressors can cause. Yes, the dreaded big C. Now why on earth would sensible people who are in fact raising funds to fight cancer, use a method that in fact contributes to the population’s stress and ill health, among other things, and could even contribute to causing cancer or other serious illnesses. But of course we can’t complain about this charity event because it is fighting the big scourge of mankind. It is therefore a veritable holy cow and cannot be criticised. After all everyone supports this cause. We all want a cure and some alleviation of this dreaded disease and are grateful to those who are trying to help with this. But can you imagine if, heaven forbid, it had been an all-night rock concert that had kept half of Hermanus awake throughout the night on Saturday? So get on with it and raise your funds and I’ll join in next time, if I’m informed about it, but for heaven’s sake do it quietly if you plan to do it at night.

The Cansa Relay for Life 2014 has been widely advertised in the local media, as it is every year. In the Hermanus Times 13 March edition, a special bilingual message on page 5 includes a kind request from the chairperson of the relay to residents of Eastcliff and surrounds to bear with the music “as this keeps the participants going throughout the night, symbolising that cancer never sleeps”. – Ed.

Yes, this “photo”, which was published in the HT last week as a reader’s photo, is a hoax. The sender of the photo said it was taken at Grotto Beach. ster to this website, with the caption “Stormageddon hits Sydney, Australia!” Comments from websiteviewers included: “Why is the flag blowing the other way? No one seems concerned?” “Why hasn’t BBC picked it up?” “A similar cloud hit Durban, South Africa in December last year. It was bad!” “Independence Day – the aliens are here!” “Looks like that in Oklahoma all the time.” Desiré herself had posted: “Strange how this exact picture was printed in our local newspaper just yesterday 13 March. Taken 5 March at Grotto Beach, Hermanus, South Africa. So where was it really taken?” The answer is probably nowhere, and probably lies in the comment of another website-viewer: “Photoshop”.

Relay-spanne maak dag onvergeetlik Die 2014 Cansa Relay For Life was weer ’n dag om te onthou.
Hierdie SAspannetjie herdenk Maureen.

The Nowan Cornelius u.16 and u.14 rugby tournament 2014 – hosted by Hermanus High school, takes place this weekend – 21 and 22 March 12 schools competing After the loss of Nowan Cornelius two years ago when he sustained a fatal injury during a rugby practise, the Sport Committee of Hermanus High School decided to have an emergency treatment fund in place in order to give the sports men and - women of Hermanus High School the best possible treatment in case of serious injury. It was decided by the committee to host a 2-day rugby tournament for u.16 and u.14 rugby teams during the end of March. The first tournament took place last year, in memory of Nowan Cornelius. There are not many tournaments for these age groups and this will be an ideal opportunity for team-building and for coaches to prepare their teams for the new season which begins in April. Last year we put aside 20% of the funds raised from this tournament for emergency situations. Dr Nico Abel also educates the players and the coaches during the tournament on how to handle emergency situations. Many of the children in our school come from previously disadvantaged areas. Therefore our second aim is to raise funds for sport in our school in order to give each child the best
possible opportunities during their five years at Hermanus High School, opportunities like participating in coaching clinics run by professionals, going on tours and playing in tournaments. The Schools that will participate in this year’s tournament are: Rondebosch Boys High; Bishops; SACS; Gansbaai Academia; Stellenberg High School; Somerset College; Punt High School; Durbanville High School; Strand High School; Worcester Gymnasium Emil Weder Secondary School from Genadendal – we extended a special invitation to this school to participate in the event, in order to promote the game of rugby and once again create opportunities for those less fortunate. The boys and their coaches will be accommodated at the Habonim and Amana Conference centres situated in the Hermanus area.

With prizes of R20 000 (winning team) and R5 000 (best dressed) there was a lot to race for during the Good Hope FM Adventure Race, held in conjunction with SA Forest Adventures last Saturday. The event, with a maximum of 250 teams, was sold out days before the event took place. According to Clinton Lerm, owner of SA Forest Adventures, there are already plans to upgrade the race in 2015 to ensure more entries and even more spectator viewing points. Competitors had to decode clues which took them from Caledon to Bot River, Kleinmond and Betty’s Bay, and finally to Hermanus. Some of the interesting stops included the Whale Museum, Hermanus shooting range, Kleinmond jukskei, the popular zipline in the Old Harbour and the highlight – the blob in the New Harbour. After visiting 16 adventure stops in the Overberg the overall winners walked away with a R20 000 cash prize. The front runners already finished around 11:00, with stragglers finishing around 16:00. Many of the entrants were from out of town and were enthused about all the region has to offer.

HEDDA MITTNER After an overwhelming response to the call for entries for the second annual South African Pemier Business Awards, a local SME (small to medium enterprise) is overjoyed to have been chosen as one of the finalists in the Exporter Award category. Afrinatural Holdings, owned by Adolf Joubert and operating from his home in Onrus, will now compete against three big businesses in this category – Hazelton Pumps International (Pty) Ltd, SAAB Grintek Defence (Pty) Ltd and Triggerfish Animation (Pty) Ltd. The winner was to be announced last night at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg. “I don’t think we stand much of a chance against these big boys, but we are thrilled to be in their company,” says Joubert. “This competition not only looks at the size of your business, but celebrates business excellence and inno- Adolf vation, and that includes job creation, and good business ethics and quality.” Afrinatural Holdings supplies South African botanical material to the international phyto-medicine, natural cosmetics, teas and health food industries, both in bulk and in value-added products such as extracts, tinctures, oils, lotions, capsules and tablets. “About 10% of the world’s plant species are found in South Africa,” says Joubert, “and many of them are unique in the world. But we only supply less than 0,1% of the global demand for botanical material.” Examples of Afrinatural’s products include rooibos and honeybush, aloe vera, Sutherlandia (cancer bush), buchu, hoodia and various other medicinal plants and herbs as well as indigenous oils for the cosmetic industry.
Joubert, the owner of Afrinatural Holdings Afrinatural not only contributes significantly to the health and general well-being of its customers, but more importantly for Joubert, the business creates approximately 20 sustainable full-time jobs for unskilled workers in rural communities for every additional R1 million turnover. “The global market is currently about $80 million,” says Joubert. “Just 10% of that would constitute economic activity in the rural areas of South Africa of approximately R80 billion. The global market is growing with 10-25% year on year.” The origins of Afrinatural Holdings can be traced back to well-known local botanist Kersten Paulsen, who established BZH Exporters and Importers and soon became a leader in the field of procuring and supplying medicinal plant material from the Afri-
MARKETING OPINION:
The rise and fall of the selfie Selfies are on the rise. And we’re all guilty of taking a few of our own and exposing them to the social networking world. Gone are the days where you needed a professional photographer or someone else to take pictures of you. Now all you need is a smartphone and yourself – that’s why it’s called a selfie. Selfies are pictures taken by you of yourself with the intent of uploading them to Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and other social networking sites. They offer a small amount of self-control in a snap-happy era where you can play supermodel and photographer at the same time. World record selfie Like all photographs, there are good selfies and bad selfies that should never ever be seen by the public (keep the duck-face to yourself), but the key to all selfies are nonchalance and good timing. Stand-up comedian and talk show host Ellen DeGeneres set a world record (and temporarily “broke” Twitter) at the Academy Awards that took place earlier in March. DeGeneres, who hosted the Oscars, managed to take an all-star selfie that broke US President Barack Obama’s record for the most retweeted photograph. Not only did she set a new record for the most retweeted tweet of all time, DeGeneres is also the first Twitter user to top 1-million retweets for a single Twitter post – 1 300 000 retweets in one hour! Cunning marketing But the all-star selfie has raised ethical questions, after it emerged that it was actual-
ly a cunning product placement by Samsung, an Oscars sponsor. According to Yahoo Finance, it had originally been DeGeneres’ idea to take selfies during the broadcast – which was perfect for TV network ABC and the sponsors, who had already taken a decision to integrate the new Samsung Galaxy Note 3 (the phone used to take the picture) into the ceremony. But the whole notion of the selfie being a spur-of-the-moment thing has been subverted by this particular shot. And it begs the question: is it OK to present a specifically planned marketing ploy such as this, as a spontaneous event? Samsung probably got more bang for its buck out of this one image than it did for its entire advertising spend on the Oscars of around $20 million. Social network users are into interesting, wacky, relevant, weird, out-of-this-world, original content. It’s content like DeGeneres’ all-star selfie (although it should really be called a groupie), Obama’s victory photo after his re-election and the Selfie Olympics that get users sharing, tweeting, retweeting and lead to major exposure. Unfortunately, Obama also chose the wrong time to pull in for a selfie with the Danish and British prime ministers at Nelson Mandela’s memorial service at FNB Stadium in South Africa last December. can continent. Joubert, with a background in business management and consultation, joined Kersten in 2005 and took over the financial, administrative and strategic development of the company. In 2009 they merged with Afrinatural Holdings, founded by Tokkie de Beer, and expanded the business in international markets. In February 2013 Afrinatural Holdings also took over Zizamele, which has been practising the cultivation of herbal medicinal plants since 2004. The company now effectively covers the whole supply chain from harvester/grower through to the consumer, and Joubert says some 70% of the company’s turnover comes from exports. “I started this business with a minimum capital lay-out, minimal knowledge and the minimum assistance from national, provincial or local government,” says Joubert. “If I could have grown my business by 35% per annum (over the last four years) then other small businesses can also do it. You don’t need a huge turnover to make an impact.” Apart from being a finalist in this year’s South African Premier Business Awards, presented by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in association with Proudly South African and Brand South Africa, other honours that have been bestowed on Afrinatural Holdings include runner-up in the export category of the Western Cape Entrepreneurship Premier’s Recognition Awards 2013 and finalist in the Cape Town Chamber of Commerce Western Cape Exporter of the Year Awards 2013. There are 12 other categories in which the winners were announced last night at the SA Premier Business Awards in Sandton, including a Green Award, Investor Award, Quality Award, Manufacturer Award, Technology Award and Young Entrepreneur Award.
Opportunity Art 3 has art for all pockets Outstanding new artworks have been added to the already dazzling Opportunity Art 3 line up. This art event is being presented by Overstrand Hospice at the Overstrand Auditorium and Banqueting Hall on 29 March. “Both Hennie Niemann senior and junior along with Titia Ballot, Tay Dall and Peace Petty are on board,” says Sharon Small-Smillie, vice-chairperson of Overstrand Hospice. “Glenda Pope of Mission’s House Gallery in Onrus, Originals Gallery and Framing as well as the Onrus Gallery have kindly provided framing for many of the pieces. We have been very fortunate this year to have Coba Diedericks on the team. Her personal relationship with many of these fine artists has been invaluable.” The fun sale element of this fundraising event should not to be overlooked or missed. More than 400 paintings, ranging from R50 to R6 000 have already been collected. “The objective is to bring affordable art back to the community and to enable the local hospice to continue providing their valuable service.” The auction pieces can be viewed on the Overstrand Hospice website www.overstrandhospice.org.za as well as at Willie Botha’s Gallery, 171 Main Road, Hermanus, on 27 and 28 March. Those unable to attend the event on 29 March, can bid online.

Chamber plans more growth opportunities The Hermanus Business Chamber is constantly sourcing opportunities for economic growth for its members, and according to Mervyn Milner, president of the chamber, they will continue on their successful 2013 track record to promote the interests of its members through a number of projects and programmes in 2014.
Abagold offered employment to 31 local unemployed young learners through learnerships via the Work & Skills Programme of the Western Cape Government, and facilitated by the Hermanus Business Chamber. Here are some of the learners with their certificates at the completion of their training.
The chamber recently co-ordinated the appeals (lodged in February) of businesses and others against the proposed Sandbaai Mall development, and they are commissioning an international marketing plan for Hermanus. A workshop was held with Dr Denis Worrall and his Omega Invest team in December last year on this topic. Milner highlighted three current programmes on the chamber’s agenda: ) Network session in April. The chamber invites members and nonmembers to come and share their experiences, constraints and achievements in the developing of their businesses at the next networking session of the chamber on Thursday 17 April at 17:30 at the Whale Coast Hotel’s Conference Centre. Each participant will be given an allotted time to do so and they can then also promote their businesses at the same time. The chamber would in particular be interested to learn about the experiences of new entrepreneurs in setting up their businesses. Participants can exhibit their product(s) with brochures and there will be ample opportunity to link up with other business
people. In addition, and as usual during the chamber’s networking sessions, there will be a number of prizes through lucky draws. Members and visitors are welcome to sponsor a prize and present it to the winner, while using the opportunity to promote their businesses or products. Refreshments are included at a cost of R50 for members and R70 for non-members. To book attendance and to finalise presentation arrangements, phone Alta Pretorius at the chamber on 028 315 1619, or email chamberceo@hermanus.co.za. ) Learnership employment The chamber facilitates the Work & Skills Programme of the Western Cape Government and businesses can apply now (forms from the chamber) for the next rollout of learners. This programme provides learnership grants to unemployed learners while being temporarily employed by a sponsoring business. Local companies currently participating are Abagold, HIK Abalone and Harbour Rock restaurant. Between them they have gained more than 50 learner employees for six months who are receiving stipends of R1 500 p.m. each from the Western Cape
Government. After the six months period it is up to the employers whether they want to employ the learners full-time. The learners are all sourced from local unemployed young people, thus creating jobs and arming the learners with new skills and a certificate which will make it easier for them to find careers if they are not immediately employed. ) Turnaround Solutions Programme The chamber will also facilitate this programme in collaboration with the Department of Trade & Industry. The programme aims to support businesses which are struggling financially to prevent them from closing down or from retrenching staff. Details and application forms are available from the chamber. Milner further invites business owners who are not yet members to join the Hermanus Business Chamber and to become part of a strong positive voice of business. “We only exist to promote the interests of our members. The broader our membership base, the stronger we can act on their behalf”, he said.

NATURE MATTERS: Fascinating eating habits of plant DID YOU KNOW: Vliëebos (Roridu la gorgonias) is a kind of sundew. It’s the largest carnivorous plant in the world and it grows right here on our doorstep in the Overstrand mountains. It is also ex tremely rare and endangered. It needs nitrogen from protein and, like other sundews, it traps insects on
its sticky leaves. But it doesn’t digest the insect itself. It harbours a little beetle that does it this favour. This beetle is adapted to not stick to the leaves, and happily eats the trapped insects. It then defecates on the plant and so fertilises it. This great arrangement is called symbiosis.

MITSUBISHI PAJERO SPORT: TOYOTA FORTUNER RIVAL
Pajero Sport 4x2 Auto: the nippy flip HANJO STIER It had to happen eventually. We have a stern rule at the office that my boss only drives Diesels, bakkies and automatics while I test anything he describes as fancy, flat ‘n fast. This way everyone’s happy, we won’t be exposed to our most loathed automotive segment and the resulting reviews should be relatively fair. Despite our best booking and logistical efforts, I somehow still found a Mitsubishi Pajero Sport 2.5 DiD 4x2 Automatic on my driveway recently. Great. Although it’s a car I’d never want to own myself, I vowed to be as objective as possible and even found a few big jobs for the Japanese SUV. First up was the transportation of a few bulky items to a farm on the outskirts of Stellenbosch and this immediately tested the Sport’s versatility. Blessed with seven seats, it took us quite a while to figure out how to collapse them but the resulting space (1,149-1,776F) is enough for most pieces of oversized cargo. Dirt roads, ditches and other loose surfaces quickly showcased the Mitsubishi’s offroad abilities which are underpinned by impressive ground clearance (205 mm), approach (34°) and departure (24°) angles. If you stay away from soft sand, mountains, mud and other such obstacles, the 2.5 4x2 will do just fine. The rear leaf-spring suspension is hard and jittery on the road but settles down with
The 2.5litre inline four cylinder turbodiesel engine develops 131 kW or 350 Nm and delivers this through a smooth fivespeed automatic gearbox with touchshift option. PHOTO: QUICKPIC a dose of weight or speed. Pajero Sport’s overactive steering needs 1.5 turns to navigate a normal 90 degree corner in town, yet we found that its upside is excellent control over slow-speed, rough terrain. No sooner was the cargo delivered and we were cruising on the highway to the airport. Road holding is a tad wonky but you simply need to treat the high-riding car with respect for it to follow your commands. Travelling at the national speed limit, it’s also fairly quiet and economical. The 2.5-litre in-line four cylinder turbodiesel engine develops 131 kW or 350 Nm and delivers this through a smooth five-speed automatic gearbox with touch-shift option. Pajero Sport has surprisingly nippy performance (we achieved 0-100 km/h in 10.4 seconds) and will gladly jack-hammer to 4,000rpm if you wish. Obviously it’s most happy between 1 500 and 2 000 rpm so you need never bury your right foot to gain thrust. The 8.5F/100 km claimed average consumption and a 70F tank do their best to stretch time between refills. Our average consumption during the week was closer to 10 though. At the airport, three see-through visitors from overseas were immediately roped into helping me review the car and it started with their mass of luggage. No problem for a Pajero Sport and five adults were soon motoring towards the mother city in air-conditioned, cruise controlled comfort. Some declared the leather seats to be a little hard but the following items all got at least one thumb up: the comprehensive trip computer with individual graphs, the touchscreen sound system, ride height, overall visibility, head room, storage solutions,
wheels and front design of the car. It’s not exactly racy but the projector headlights and grills have been skillfully joined in a tapered nose. Step/skid boards along the flanks break the slab-sidedness of it all while the tailgate has a simple, uncomplicated look. Based on the Triton bakkie, we’re not sure how this ended up being called a Pajero? Never mind though, when outdoorsy types queue for a big, rugged, affordable SUV they obviously don’t care about its name. Price and spec are way more important so here goes: leather, Bluetooth, front and rear aircon, cruise control, three 12V sockets, HID headlights, rear-view camera and park sensors. Auto lights and wipers, power windows and mirrors as well as driver’s seat controls, ABS, EBD, BAS, stability control and six airbags. I could go on about our many trips, the lights and seat adjustments but I sense that there’s one burning question in the air. Is it as good as a Fortuner? Unfortunately, Mitsubishi has an inferior dealer count to its big Japanese rival and this Pajero Sport 2.5 4x2 Auto will set you back R419 900. The cheapest Fortuner, a 2.5 Raised Body, costs “just” R361 600 but doesn’t come close to the Mitsu’s specifications. The next model up is on par with our test car but costs R20 000 more so the entry-level Pajero Sport is competitively priced and well spec’d. Its 3-year/100 000 km warranty and 5 year/90 000 km service plan are identical to Toyota’s so you may want to draw straws or flip a coin to choose between these models.

Local cyclists in top form for Cape Epic Two local cyclists, Mathew Browne and Claude Tyers, team up in this year’s ABSA Cape Epic mountain bike challenge which takes place from 23-30 March. Both cyclists are sponsored by Hermanus Toyota. Having just turned 40, Tyers made it one of his goals to get into serious cycling shape and enter his first Cape Epic alongside his friend and race partner Browne (46), who is competing in his sixth Cape Epic. Browne says that although Tyers is a newcomer to stage racing, he does not lack the essential mental and physical attributes required to conquer this gruelling 8-day race. According to Browne, Tyers has been totally committed to following a strict training regime under the watchful eye of his local cycling coach and mentor Morné Bester. “It will be an honour to finally compete in the over 40 category
alongside such a committed athlete and above all to ride with such a loyal friend. This race is all about communication and friendship and we seem to have the right mix to successfully fly the Hermanus Toyota banner high on every stage of this year’s Cape Epic,” says Browne. This untamed African MTB race route is 718 km and includes 14 850 m of climbing ascent. Local and international professional and amateur mountain bikers will tackle the demanding 8-day adventure through the Western Cape. The race starts at Meerendal Wine Estate outside Durbanville and ends at the Lourensford Wine Estate in Somerset West. ) Two other local riders are the father and son team from the Wine Village, Paul and Jo du Toit. After working voluntarily in the Cape Epic’s office for the past 10 years, Paul has finally decided to enter.
