“I can’t see why they have to shorten the season, because the only people affected, are the law abiding citizens.” So said Liston Davidowitz, a businessman from Hermanus with a love for crayfishing in season, after the total allowable catch and fishing days for the 2014 /15 season was recently announced. For recreational fishermen, the season is reduced to 21 days, compared to 26 days previously. According to Shaheen Moolla, a lawyer specialising in fisheries law and management, the recreational lobster fishery has had its quota slashed by 17% to 69 tons or 21 days of fishing. “There is little doubt that the economic impact of such a curtailment in the recreational fishery will be felt across the coastal Western Cape economy as recreational fishermen decide to not service their boats, purchase new wetsuits, gear and equipment, or confirm holidays in coastal villages from Paternoster to Arniston.”

The reduced quotas could also have a negative impact on local tourism, according to Debbie Fouché, secretary of the Hermanus Angling Club. Fouché said: “Although most of the club’s members are not directly affected by the new restrictions, it could have negative repercussions for locals and holidaymakers wanting to take their boats out to sea. It might not be worth all the effort anymore.” The 2014 /15 crayfish season’s total allowable catch (TAC) was recently announced by the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF). “The only aspect still up for discussion is the spread of the fishing days,” Moolla said. “The proposed TAC only serves to confirm the parlous state of our lobster stocks and that the department’s compliance strategies, what ever they are, are not working. “These compliance and management failures are also clearly apparent in the abalone, line fish and other sectors where poaching and irresponsible fishing practices are rapidly on the increase.” ) Article continues on p. 3.

2 HermanusTimes Phase 2 of CBD revitalisation strategy to be tackled

Nuus News

6 November, 2014

The Overstrand Municipality (OM) has recently appointed consultants to undertake a Phase 2 study for the CBD Revitalisation. Interested and affected parties are invited to give input prior to a public meeting to be scheduled in the near future. The 2000 study (Phase 1), prepared by Gapp, Architects and Urban Designers, was completed in 2002 and a total of 13 projects/interventions were identified. Over the past 12 years, the OM and the private sector have made considerable investments in the CBD to implement the proposals of the 2000 Revitalisation Framework. Projects completed by the OM in terms of

the 2002 study include the CBD relief road, upgrade of the Cliff Top, redevelopment of Market Square, Gearing’s Point upgrade and development of the Station precinct. These projects were implemented by the municipality between 2002 to 2012 at an estimated cost of R80 million. The private sector has also heavily invested into the CBD revitalisation strategy. This includes construction work on commercial, residential, parking and landscaping projects to an estimated value of R225 million. Other projects that are already in an advanced phase of planning or are close to approval with implementation set to start in the near future, include the taxi rank, Mitchell Street precinct and Main Road’s traffic calm-

ing measures. According to a statement released by the OM, the CBD has now reached a critical phase of the revitalisation where more detailed planning is required. This framework will identify new projects to assist the revitalisation, improving the identity, sense of place and amenity of the CBD. This detailed planning will specifically focus on areas such as: ) Vehicle and/or pedestrian traffic; ) parking allocation and distribution; ) road and pavement surfacing and delineation; ) street furniture upgrades, signage and information boards; ) preservation and celebration of impor-

This project will be introduced to the public at a public meeting to be scheduled in the near future. Interested and affected parties will be given ample opportunity to submit inputs towards the study. Anyone wanting to give preliminary input, however, is invited to submit his/her input to rkuchar@overstrand.gov.za or Riaan Kuchar, Town Planning, PO Box 20, Hermanus 7200.

Each property will have special conditions in their title deeds preventing any further subdivision and containing elements so as to protect each other’s view in perpetuity. Owl’s Rock, a famous landmark homestead occupying 12,445 m² of Hermanus seafront land, is on the market. Owl’s Rock has been family-owned for over 33 years by the same family of senior Anglo American extraction. “When the family decided to sell three years ago, it became evident that potential buyers either wanted to cut it up into lots of subdivisions or at least wanted to know what the exact possibilities were in terms of town planning and so on,” says John Leppan of Hermanus Property Sales, It has now been sub-divided into three large properties, “none of which impact negatively on any of the surrounds and are very much in keeping with the ambience of this lovely enclave of exclusive real estate in Protea, Sea and Linaria Roads.” Leppan says the application involved almost every municipal department, the roads department, a full environmental impact study as well as a public participation process. “At last the final letter of approval has been issued, and now it’s on the market.” It has a grade 3A heritage status, but according to Leppan local heritage authorities would support the modernisation and alteration of the homestead sympathetically. Special features include a colony of seals frolicking daily in the sea in front of Owl’s Rock, a whale of a view and a secret surfing spot directly offshore where stormy winter sea conditions provide world-class waves. Prospective buyers can contact Hermanus Property Sales on 028 313 0914, John Leppan 082 801 5252 or visit the website: www.hpsrealty.co.za reference EC-49.

‘Oumagrootjie’ goes paragliding JANINE VAN DER RIET With buckets full of courage, Oumagrootjie Fransie Quass fulfilled her life long dream after mentioning many times during her 90 years of living, that she would love to do a parachute jump. In October, Fransie’s dream came true when she did a tandem paraglide flight, hovering over Hermanus, and Onrus Manor where she lives. Fransie was widowed at the age of 69 and her adventurous spirit grew wings since then, said one of her daughters, Fransie Solms. “We, her five daughters, unanimously agreed that, since she is fit and in such good health, we would actively encourage her to ‘fly’.” Fransie and three of her daugters, Hannalie Quass, Lanie van Reenen and Solms met paraglide instructors Pete Wallenda and

Carolina Burd-Rocchinotti of WallendAir at the top of Rotary Drive in Hermanus on 23 October. Having checked that the wind conditions were ideal, Wallenda fitted Fransie with her tandem suit and they took off to the encouraging sounds of her children and some of her grand- and great grandchildren cheering her on: “Go Ouma!” From the air she saw whales in Walker Bay, home, her church in Sandbaai, the Hermanus Bowls Club and the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. When the family said goodbye to her later that day, Fransie’s parting words were: “You know, I would love to see sharks under the water...” The family knows by now she did not mean at the aquarium. ) Fransie also climbed Maanskijnkop in 2004 to celebrate her 80th birthday, as was reported in the Hermanus Times in June of that year.

4 HermanusTimes Mayor delivers directional speech

Nuus News

6 November, 2014

Overstrand Mayor Nicolette Botha-Guthrie delivered her directional speech at a council meeting held on 29 October. The speech focused on the time schedule for the review of the 2015/16 Integrated Development Plan (IDP) and the 2015/16 to 2017/18 budget which was adopted by council on 27 August 2014. The schedule gives details on the activities and time-frames the municipality intends to follow in order to execute the process for the third review of the approved five year IDP (2012/17), as well as the budget preparation for 2015/16 to 2017/18. The mayor said: “The biggest consideration in the development of the five year IDP and the subsequent annual reviews, is prioritizing the “vast needs” of our communities and assessing the resources (budget) available to address them.” In setting and guiding the strategic direction for the 2015/16 IDP review and budget process, the mayor held a strategic session with mayoral committee members and top management on 26 September. They focused on the OM’s vision, mission and strategic goals, reflected on their performance in the past financial year and discussed key considerations for the 2015/16 financial year. The municipality’s five strategic objectives remain unchanged and are: ) The provision of democratic, accountable and ethical governance; ) The provision and maintenance of municipal services;

) The encouragement of structured community participation in the matters of the municipality; ) The creation and maintenance of a safe and healthy environment; and ) The promotion of tourism, economic and social development. The mayor said: “Remaining on course with the annual delivery of the five year IDP, requires human and financial resources.” To deliver on the priorities to be set in the 2015/16 IDP review, the budget steering committee will be mindful of the following: ) The findings of the INCA report on the OM’s long term financial sustainability. Their recommendation: curtail capital spending for the next three years and identify and assess the critical capital projects funded from loans. ) ESKOM’s proposed tariff increase of 12.6% for 2015/16 and the dire implications this will have on the municipality’s revenue. ) The current economic pressure on all residents in Overstrand to afford municipal services (tariff increases). The mayor emphasised that exercising strict financial discipline and balancing “tough trade-offs” will once again be required for the 2015/16 budget compilation process. “The strategic discussions will continue over the next few months in order for us to table a credible IDP review and budget at the end of March 2015.” Mayor Botha-Guthrie urges all stakeholders to participate and engage in platforms created for the 2015/16 IDP review and budget process.

Power cuts on hold? JANINE VAN DER RIET Many residents and visitors in the Overstrand were caught off-guard on Sunday when sudden power cuts hit the country after a coal silo at Eskom’s Majuba power station in Mpumalanga cracked on Saturday.

Most residents were not aware of last minute warnings issued by Eskom late Saturday evening, prior to the blackouts. According to Eskom’s website, power outages were scheduled for this week, but on Monday Eskom said scheduled power cuts were put on hold. (Best path of action though, is to be prepared...) Most Hermanus Times readers were not in a panic about the power outages on Sunday. One reader, who owns a coffee shop, said some of their clients were upset with them when the blackout occurred.

Other readers said they decided to go to the beach and enjoy ice-cream. Some enjoyed a braai and did not even notice. The A Volonté Trio, performing at the municipal auditorium , had to play their way through a few seconds of total darkness, but coped admirably. The status of the power system can be monitored in the following ways: ) Watch out for power alerts and Eskom Power Bulletin broadcasts after the SABC news in the evenings. Beware of fake Microsoft scams Microsoft has warned of telephone scams that have cost unsuspecting consumers hundreds or even thousands of rands Microsoft SA has issued a press statement saying it is once again warning local consumers to be cautious of a reoccurring phone scam by fraudsters claiming to be from Microsoft. The scams have left the wallets of unsuspecting consumers hundreds and, in some instances, thousands of rands lighter, Microsoft said. According to Microsoft, cybercriminals and scammers make use of public phone directories as information gathering sources on consumers in an effort to convince clients that they can be trusted. These callers claim to be from Windows Helpdesk, Windows Service Centre, Microsoft Tech Support, Microsoft Support, Windows Technical Department Support Group, or even Microsoft’s Research and Development Team. From this point onwards, Microsoft said the scam typically unfolds in the following manner: A cold caller, claiming to be a representative of Microsoft, one of its brands or a third party contracted by Microsoft, tells the victim they are checking into a computer problem, infection or virus that has been detected by

Microsoft. “In reality, the scammer only tricked unsuspecting consumers into believing that there is a problem and that paying a fee would be the best way to sort the issues out. Often they will also push clients to purchase a one year computer maintenance subscription,” said Ashleigh Fenwick, Microsoft South Africa’s PR and communications manager. Beyond this tactic, cybercriminals also aim to trick consumers into installing malware onto their PCs, with the aim of gathering sensitive data such as online banking logins, Microsoft said. Fenwick says that consumers should be aware that Microsoft will not cold call them with regards to malfunctioning PCs or viruses. They advise to not purchase software or services over the telephone. If there is a fee associated with the service, then hang up. Consumers should never authorise remote control over a PC to a third party, unless they can confirm that the party concerned is a legitimate representatives of a computer support team with whom they are already a customer. If you feel that a caller is acting suspiciously, take down their information and report them to the South African Police Services (08600 10111 or crimestopgauteng@ saps.org.za). – www.mybroadband.co.za

Ship SA just needs a good captain, says Max JANHENDRIK COETZER PSG Wealth Hermanus hosted a well-attended client function last week at the municipal auditorium where former founding editor of Vrye Weekblad, author and columnist, Max du Preez, was the main speaker. Hannes Smuts, senior portfolio manager at PSG Wealth, Hermanus, said at the opning of the function that times were admittedly getting tougher in the financial markets industry, but that they still remain positive. “It’s becoming more and more difficult to do business with the markets getting increasingly difficult and volatile.

“But with us being one of the latest companies to be listed on the main board of the JSE in June earlier this year, one thing is certain, we will simply stick to our strategy because it seems to work.” When Max du Preez took the stage he said that South Africa was facing the “perfect storm”, because the lives of many hadn’t improved and the masses were getting angry, while the government was ineffective and had run out of money. “During the past nine years 43 people were killed during protests alone. We are wasting billions on corruption and maladministration, which bring us to the point where the state’s coffers are dry. “Energy problems are also getting worse, and to top it all, taxes are to

be increased next year.” According to Du Preez we were creating a really dangerous situation for ourselves. “A dangerous person is someone who has nothing to lose. And we are creating these individuals. For instance, about half of our matric learners drop out of school before even finishing. “Therefore no real education is one of the main factors contributing to this problem.” Du Preez said that one need only look at president Jacob Zuma to realise that there is no way forward with him leading the country. “With Zuma you look at corruption, scandals and no real education. Zuma is more a traditional chief than a president. His sole focus is

rather to enrich himself instead of leading the country. “State expenditure will also never be cut with Zuma as president. “So it leaves us without a captain to steer this ship in a positive direction, because Zuma does not have the capacity to do so.” According to Du Preez, South Africa’s civil service is currently the most expensive in the world. “We’re looking at R14 out of each R100 in comparison to Russia at R3 per R100. There was also a 13% increase in the number of civil servants during his term as president and a 76% rise in the salary bill.” But according to Du Preez people should remain positive and keep their faith. “South Africa’s ship is robust

enough, but we need to find the right captain to steer us out of the storm. “ I will be happy with either Cyril Ramaphosa, Nkosazana DlaminiZuma or Zweli Mkhize to succeed him. So just take some sea-sick pills for now. “We will not become like Zimbabwe at all. Maybe we must even build a Mugabe-statue here somewhere to remind ourselves of their mistakes.” Du Preez also said that South Africa may one day see an ANC/DA coalition. “With the splitting off of the EFF and Numsa’s new party there will be a strong new ‘left’, and room for a new strong middle grouping. It sounds impossible now, but who knows, maybe in ten years’ time...”

The Association for Supper Treat Escapes (T.A.S.T.E.), started in October 1994 by Anne and the late John Philip, celebrated its 20th anniversary with a delicious dinner provided by Angelique Brink at Sandbaai Country House last weekend. All in all, 30 present and past members met in the candle-lit dining area where Anne regaled the group with the history of the club. The idea of the club was to meet once every five or six weeks at a venue known for its good food and unusual ambience. The members always used to contribute a small amount above the cost of the evening which went towards feeding less privileged people at the end of that year.

Those present at the anniversary were surprised as names of restaurants which have closed down over time in Hermanus were recalled and the dishes they served remembered. In the initial years a different venue was found for each treat, some of which were further away in Stanford, Kleinmond and Bot River. – ANNE PHILIP

New winemaker at H’Pietersfontein

Wilhelm Pienaar, a second-generation winemaker, his wife Leoné and their baby Mika are relocating to Hermanus, where he has accepted the winemaking responsibility at Hermanuspietersfontein. Pienaar has five years experience as chief of red wine at Nederburg. He also served as harvest assistant through to seasonal winemaker in France, internationally marketing South African wines in over 40 countries. He was a former cellar master of the JC le Roux sparkling wine emporium, and has master degrees from Stellenbosch University and SupAgro Montpellier in France. Pienaar is relishing the “opportunity to develop wines from a region as remarkable as Sondagskloof. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity”. “Winemaking starts on the farm and I am looking forward to exploring the farm’s hills and valleys on foot, in toe with viticulturist Lochner Bester, getting to know the terroir and familiarise myself with every block, vine and cultivar. I have to know which way the proverbial wind blows because Lochner tells me wind was made on this farm.” “As I get to know and understand the farm and the cellar, we’ll develop building blocks which will assist in producing remarkable terroir wines. Given the quality of raw material and talent at our disposal I can’t wait to start making wines from Sondagskloof. “I’m excited at the prospect of working with Lochner and winemaker Kim McFarlane and to give the cellar’s Skapie even more reason to bleat…” Wilhelm joins the Hermanuspietersfontein family on 1 December.

Fifth holeinone for sprightly Pat JANHENDRIK COETZER Pat Etsebeth (85) from Kidbrooke Place, recently hit her fifth hole-in-one during a ladies tournament at the Hermanus Golf Club. It was her third time on the 24th hole with a length of 113 m. Her first hole-in-one happened some 30 years ago in Prieska, and since then she has managed to sink four in Hermanus; three on the 24th hole and one on the 10th. “I was a bit surprised with the hole-in-one because I actually had a bit of a shaky start. But that 24th hole was really the highlight of my day.” Pat says her parents were keen golfers as well and her father played golf until the age of 82. “I started playing golf at the age of 24 and have never stopped. Nowadays I play twice a week, and although golf can become expensive sometimes, it is not only about the sport, but also an excellent way to socialise with friends.” Pat says the Hermanus golf course is her favourite. “The course is absolutely beautiful with the most magnificent views. I’ve been truly bless-

ed to be able to play here for the past 30 years now.” According to Pat, the best advice for playing good golf is to practice as much as you can. “Golf is a challenge and a game you will never master. You have your good days and your bad days. “But the key is to take your mind off anything else when playing. The moment you think you know how to hit the ball, is the moment you make a mistake. And then of course you have to practice as much as you possibly can.” Pat dreams of playing at St. Andrews in Scotland as well as at Sun City. “At first I thought that playing at St. Andrews would never happen for me, but after the recent announcement that the club is now open to women, my dream is alive again. “Otherwise I’m looking forward to playing golf until the day that I physically cannot anymore,” she added. ) Members of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club at St. Andrews voted (in September) to become a mixed membership club, after being reserved for men for more than 260 years. The ruling was effective immediately.

GOLD FOR LINE DANCERS: The Rhythm in Line Dancers Hermanus won gold for team formation and seven dis tinctions in the United Kingdom Dance Council grading and competition held in Paarl last weekend. The dancers who re ceived distinctions in the gradings are Michaela Viljoen, Dee Ridge (instructor), Pat Viljoen and Ada Campher. In front is Daniel Knight.

SANTA SHOEBOX PROJECT: Learners, teach ers and workers from Her manus Primary School par ticipated in the Santa Shoe box Project, contributing a total of 120 boxes to chil dren in need, just in time for Christmas. Led by one of the teachers, Julia Dayson, the project was a big success. Dayson said she took an in terest in the project and de cided to challenge the rest of the staff, secretaries and workers at the school to at least donate two boxes each. This led to 120 boxes being filled with goodies.

BARGAIN HUNTING: The Kidbrooke Market held at Kid brooke Place on Saturday 25 October was a great success and the organisers thanked the residents for putting in so much effort and making it such a fun and wonderful event. They also thanked the residents of Hermanus who came to support the market. The colourful assortment of books on sale drew many shoppers in search of a good read at a bar gain price.

A resident of McMillan House sculpted a very pretty water feature, not large, but approximately a metre square. It is incorporated into an existing flower bed which he created. Two yellow billed ducks had arrived at the complex and it was decided to give them a pretty pond instead of a small plastic basin of water to swim in. The gentleman who built the pond is partially sighted, however, he tends to his garden vigorously and loves to be outside. After about a week or so, management arrived from Cape Town and he was told to fill it in immediately. The complex has resident guinea fowl and francolin which abound, much to the delight of the residents. There is a portion of undeveloped land which is their breeding ground. A couple of years ago the residents were forbidden to feed the smaller wild birds with seed and so most removed their bird feeders. They were told that birds have lice and ticks and that they would jump onto them. Management were also worried about having Avian flu arrive at the com-

Ducks out of water plex. So what joy do retired people have in one of these places? (I do know that a retirement village in Onrus has a wonderful duck pond.) So please, management, take a feather out of their cap, and do consider letting retirees at least have some pleasure in watching the birds, as we all well know that pets are not allowed in any of these places. I urge you to please re-think your “thinking”.

Sport results font needs a magnifying glass

Appeal from lawabiding citizens, nature lovers

The smallest print size in the HT is used only for bridge and runner results. In the sports section of the paper you will find, for example Julian Shaw, writing informatively about golf competitions at the golf club, and an account of a golfing group, the DOGS; in the latter I suspect one needs inside knowledge to appreciate who’s who. But this and other sport is at the normal size of the paper. Then you come to the bridge and Whalers Athletic Club runners and have to reach for the magnifying glass. Other papers like the Cape Times treat bridge results like everything else. Would the HT consider doing this too, and at the same time laying out the results so that they can be clearly followed?

The author of this letter wants to make sure that it is understood the road she is asking to not be treated as a racetrack, is Beach Road/Atlantic Drive in Onrus. Here are extracts of the letter for those of you who may have missed it last week - ED: This road is becoming increasingly dangerous for pedestrians and house owners with speedsters travelling at high speeds and dog owners “running” their dogs while careering along in their cars. As law-abiding citizens and nature lovers we respectfully request: 1. Speed control signs of maximum 20 km/ hour 2. Application of “dogs on leashes” law and removal of dog pooh by owners. 3. The urgent completion of a pedestrian walkway from surfers’ corner to Beach Road intersection. Let’s work together and prevent the deterioration of this wonderful natural asset.

JOHN TRUSWELL

Your discomfort with trying to decipher the small print is probably shared by the majority of the bridge players and runners who read the results every week. You will note that we have changed the font. – ED

Lang storie kort, so beland sy toe voor my hek. “Dit was my ma se versie,” sê ek vir haar. Toe sê sy, “Wel, dan is dit by jou wat ek moes uitkom.” Sy druk toe R1 000 in my hand, vat my hande en bid vir my oor alles waaroor ek bekommerd was, alles wat my gepla het. Dit was vir my ’n ongelooflike ervaring! So vandag wil ek sê: “Jammer Abba Vader dat ek my hoop op mense gesit het en nie op U nie. “Vergewe my asseblief.”

Reading the headline “Discussing the future of Onrus estuary” (HT 30 October, p. 5) to the article that reports on the Onrus Estuary Management Meeting held on 24 October, I was urged to grab a pen and change the word “future” to “past”, as the meeting just about only addressed the factors that have caused the current state of the estuary, while the future of the estuary is still as vague as reeds in the mist.

CHARITY GOLF: The annual Izibusiso charity golf day on Thursday 30 October at the Herma nus Golf Club, was a Stableford Alliance. This day is held to raise funds to finance Izibusiso, a small home in Zwelihle where vulnerable children under the age of four years are taken in and cared for until Hermanus Child Welfare can place them within suitable loving families. The day was a great success, with a full field, weather conducive to pleasant golfing and all of the players in good spirits. At close of play, the golfers attended a prize giving dinner where the local Hermanus golfing community was thanked by the organisers for their faithful support of Izibusiso. Special mention was also made of the many sponsors whose generosity made the day possible. The Izibusiso golf day raffle, with a first prize of R4 000 worth of premium local wines, was won by Glenda Van Beneke. The winners of the golf day included, from left: Elize Nykamp, Tom Casey, Toni Upton (Izibusiso), Naimh Casey and Annie Spratt with Abbey Wentzel (fundraiser).

12 HermanusTimes Sustainable fisheries on Kogelberg Coast under spotlight

Algemeen General

6 November, 2014

JANHENDRIK COETZER “We have to sell our fish for next to nothing to the middle man to make ends meet because we don’t have a choice. We sell snoek for example at R20, and the guy we sold it to, sells it at about R80. Our children stay in Kleinmond after finishing school because we don’t have money to let them study further. Sometimes our boats stand still because we don’t have enough money for petrol or bait.” These are some of the concerns raised by small-scale fishing community members in Kleinmond, that cause overfishing as well as a vicious cycle of poverty amongst fishermen in the area. Overfishing and poaching along the Kogelberg Coast are huge problems, and as part of the recent National Marine Week, the WWF Nedbank Green Trust, together with other coastal stakeholders, conser-

vation agencies and small scale fishing communities organised a field trip along the coast to create awareness on the importance of achieving sustainable fishing. According to Augustine Morkel, manager of the WWF Nedbank Green Trust, they are trying to encourage the local community to take responsibility for managing fish stocks within the Kogelberg area in a sustainable manner by creating positive incentives for local smallscale fisheries that are working towards the projects’ long-term goals. “This includes ensuring the broad principle that within the Kogelberg area, 80% of the inshore zone should be managed for preferential use by smaller-scale local fishers, enabling the remaining 20% to be set aside as a ‘no take’ area to allow resources to recover.” A key area that specifically needs attention is creating partnerships between local fishermen and businesses. One of the businesses sup-

porting the small-scale fishing community is Combined Abalone Processors at the New Harbour in Hermanus. The general manager at this abalone farm, Val Nasson, feels that it is important to support local fishermen in order to achieve sustainable fisheries. “We do all we can to help them better manage their income and finances. In some instances we even go as far as to lend them money come the beginning of the year when there’s school fees and other extra expenses,” says Nasson. Market incentives linking the Kogelberg fishing communities to the formal seafood marketing channels are being introduced to inspire responsible fishing practices. Examples of these include involving chefs from restaurants that serve sustainable seafood to source and serve hottentot fish from Kleinmond. Some of the country’s leading food

retailers have also participated in a WWF-led retailer learning journey and have shown a willingness to source some of the less exploited species such as mussels and hottentot fish from the area. In helping to ensure alignment, small-scale fishers from the smallscale fishing communities of Pringle Bay, Betty’s Bay and Kleinmond have also been invited to participate in the Kogelberg Biosphere Coast Marine Working Group meetings, which take place every quarter, to discuss the challenges facing effective integrated management within the region. WWF have also developed a smallscale fisher training course which has been rolled out to some of the small-scale fishers and relevant stakeholders within the Kogelberg area. To date, only two representatives have been trained in the region, but there are plans to roll out the training nationally with the Department

of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF). “Our work of encouraging communities to take responsibility for managing marine resources effectively and to speak up against ill practices such as overfishing and poaching has been beneficial in ensuring accountability on both ends,” says Morkel. The Kogelberg coast is best known as a rich fish and seafood area, as well as a breeding ground for the country’s endangered line fish, abalone and west coast lobster. This marine project is important because it endeavours to bring together the objectives of resource protection and conservation. “The Kogelberg project has been a learning experience and is helping us to improve our understanding of the constraints facing integrated ocean management and the value of the marine resources within the Kogelberg small-scale fishing communites,” says Morkel.

walk takes place this Fri day – 7 November. Due to the successful first walk on 3 October, opening hours have been extended from 20:00 to 21:00. In addi tion, Abalone Gallery in Harbour Road will be tak ing part in the project, bringing the total number of participating galleries to 12. The concept of “First Fridays” was unveiled at the Hermanus Tourism AGM in September. On that occasion, beautifully painted walking sticks were presented to various dignitaries to encourage them, and others, to “Art Walk our Town.” Following through with this idea during November, many of the galleries will be displaying walking sticks painted and decorated by their own artists. The event starts at 17:00. All the venues are easily identified by the orange lanterns and flags hanging outside the galleries. Wine and snacks will be served, gallery owners and artists will be in attendance and the galleries will have new artworks on display.

FIRST FRIDAYS ART WALK: The second art

Book launch a first at BirdLife meeting For the first time in BirdLife Overberg’s history, they will host a book launch at their monthly meeting on Monday 10 November. Vernon Head will talk about his first book The Search for the Rarest Bird in the World and the meeting will take the form of a question-and-answer session. This book tells the story of an expedition undertaken by Vernon and three other men to find the rarest bird in the world – the elusive Nechisar Nightjar – in the Plains of Nechisar, tucked between the hills of the Great Rift Valley in the Gamo Gofa province of Ethiopia. It is more than a boy’s own adventure. It is a meditation on nature, on ways of seeing, on the naming of things and why we feel so compelled to label. It is a story of friendships and camaraderie. But most of all it embraces and enfolds one into the curious and eye-opening world of the birdwatcher.

DID YOU KNOW ...The Blushing Bride Se ruria florida also called the Pride of Franschhoek, is one of our most beautiful Proteaceae species. It occurs naturally on ly on the Franschhoek side of the Hotten totsHolland Nature Reserve. It is critically endangered by alien invasive species and too frequent fires. These beautiful flowers are pollinated by insects and seeds are dispersed by ants that carry them to their underground nests where they form the seed bank, only germinating after fire. This flower makes a wonderful addition to a fynbos garden. It is waterwise and requires a welldrained, sunny position. PHOTO: CYNTHIA PRICE

Vernon, an architect by profession and chairperson of BirdLife South Africa, will sign copies of his book at the meeting for those who wish to purchase it at R225 per copy. Credit card facilities will be available. Anton Odenadaal, chairperson of BirdLife Overberg, has read the book and says he simply could not put it down until he had finished it. This is a must read for anyone interested in birds and nature in general. The evening, which is scheduled at 18:30 for 19:00 at Mollergren Park, promises to be great fun as the organisers have also managed to arrange for complimentary whiskey and gin and tonic for members and visitors. Chess club launched The Hermanus Chess Club was officially launched recently with cashkows.com as their main sponsor. They also supplied the club with chess sets, clocks and a miniature garden chess set, which will be used to teach the younger players. cashcows.com has also offered their boardroom to the club for tutoring during the week as well as for matches and social chess games on Saturdays. Prospective students, parents and advanced players attended the launch and the children could not wait to challenge each other to a game of chess. The club also introduced the new training program at the launch, which will be used to coach the students. The software will motivate kids to become successful thinkers. Also included in the program is an award system where the children will be given col-

Volunteers needed to help youngsters read The Enlighten Education Trust is looking for volunteers from Hermanus to assist with a Literacy Project to be implemented in 2015. The main focus of the project will be the establishment of a Shine Chapter in partnership with the Overberg Education District, in a bid to create a nation of readers. The project will be implemented in two primary schools in the Overstrand, focusing on Grade 2 and 3 learners at Zwelihle Primary and Lukhanyo Primary Schools. That means you will be working with young children who need your help, but do not panic, you will be trained to cope. For further information, please contact the trust manager of Enlighten Education Trust, Magriet Peter, at the Enlighten Centre, corner of Swartdam Road and Angelier Street at 028 313 0974.

Choir to perform Hermanus Serenades, formerly known as the Zwelihle Youth Choir, is a community choir based in Zwelihle. Shaun Tsholoba founded the choir in 2013. Tsholoba is a classical and opera singer, choir conductor/leader of the Qhayiya Secondary School Choir, general assistant and mentor at the Overstrand Training Institute. He is assisted by five residents, Elton Nkanunu, Mzikayise Damesi, Morris Thukwayo, Nontsikelelo Mahela and Vusumzi Tshona from Zwelihle, who are passionate about opera and chorale music. The choir consists of 48 members and 60% of the choir members are between the ages of 14 and 18.

The main aim of the choir is to see the youth staying away from negative influences (drug and alcohol abuse, teenage pregnancy, and crime). The choir will host a concert on 29 November at Qhayiya Secondary School at 14:00 and the repertoire will include African choral music, traditional music, classical and opera music. The organisers are asking for sponsorships and assistance from the Hermanus community, as they are in need of T-shirts and uniforms so that they can look presentable when they represent the Overstrand at choir competitions. For more info about the choir or assistants, contact Nontsikelelo on 076 841 3658 or Shaun on 061 989 8787.

GRACE AND SPACE

MercedesBenz CLS: the beautiful contradiction HANJO STIER

The Mercedes-Benz CLS fourdoor coupé is a contradiction on wheels. Launched in 2005 and updated five years later, this sleek sedan combines the grace and lines of a coupé with the space and practicality of a four-door sedan. Mercedes just gave the car some mild tweaks and invited us to witness these ourselves. A four-door coupé technically doesn’t exist, yet here it is, parked outside a boutique hotel ready for eager journalists to test. This second generation shows much bolder lines and stronger brand DNA with its wide face, where its new light clusters are the biggest giveaway the CLS just received a minor face-lift. Mercedes staff pointed out more new details in an amazing light–and–laser presentation while quickly slipping in some interesting statistics. This model has sold over 120 000 times worldwide, with Southern Africa accounting for 4 400 total CLS sales and adding to the firm’s local success in the luxury car market. Eccentric customers looking for even more irrationality from their posh ride will be sad to learn that the CLS shooting brake will no longer be available on local soil. As a sort of compensation, the mild update to this four-door coupé range isn’t just cosmetic: it also covers new gadgets, engines

The AMG S is hilariously fast and exciting, yet surprisingly refined at moderate speeds. and transmissions. The CLS250 CDI (2,1ll-4 turboDiesel, 150 kW, 500 Nm) starts the range at R760 000 with the 3l V6 turbo-Diesel CLS350 BlueTEC (190 kW, 620 Nm) costing R893 000. The previous, petrol V6 CLS350 is replaced by a new, turbo-petrol V6 CLS400. Its 245 kW and 480 Nm will set you back R888 000. Two turbo-petrol V8s complete

the range with the 4l L, 300 kW, 600 Nm CLS500 at R1,12 million and the mad CLS63 AMG S 5.5l for a round R1,6 million. It punches out a colossal 430 kW or 800 Nm which allow it a claimed 100 km/ h sprint time of just 4,1 seconds. The 350 and 500 models enjoy Merc’s new nine-speed 9G-Tronic automatic gearbox, 250 and 400 still using the trusty 7G-Tronic while the AMG has its own Speed-

shift MCT 7G-Tronic. CLS63 also boasts the highest standard specification level and many tasty AMG upgrades to body and drive train components. All CLS models contain impressive features like an active and passive safety package with various driver aids and alerts to prevent or lessen the impact of a crash. Full leather, powered gadgets and cool toys are present

with a bigger, free-standing infotainment screen. Only CLS250 CDI doesn’t come with navigation. Headline act at the car’s launch were its LED headlights with an optional “Multibeam LED” system available on some models. We got to experience this fully automated lighting on a night drive where main/high beam is adapted constantly to give optimal spread while tracking and cutting out other cars to prevent dazzling them. I had the opportunity to pilot every model mentioned above and found that its new tech and spec are almost as impressive as the sophistication and efficiency of this range. The small Diesel 250 isn’t as lethargic as you may think and, together with its big 350 brother, present the sensible side of a new CLS. The AMG S is hilariously fast and exciting, yet surprisingly refined at moderate speeds. My pick of the bunch would be the multitalented 500 or a 400 with plenty of optional extras. Whichever one you choose though, you’ll certainly notice the elevated refinement and looks of these four-door coupé paradoxes. Slotting in somewhere between their E-Class and S-Class sedans in terms of size and equipment, the CLS fills a gap that probably didn’t need filling. It’s decadence that shouldn’t exist but evokes the emotions its predecessor first created – we’re glad this beautiful contradiction exists. – Galimoto Media

KING OF SQUASH: The Her manus squash championships were played in the Swiss pair ing format from 21 to 24 Oc tober. Players played four matches with the final playoffs on Friday in front of an enthu siastic group of family and supporters. Wayne Cooke, pic tured here with Elize Mostert, one of the members of the club, was crowned the club champion. Migan Beets, a young 14yearold, played above himself and did very well to beat some senior play ers finishing seventh out of 15 on the new ranking of players. The club thanked all their supporters and sponsors including Bernhard Heyns (Gabriëlskloof), JC Martin (Creation) and Francois Barnard (Harbour Rock Seagrill & Sushi Bar), all of whom also played in the championships.

Zurich Hermanus wraps it up early CRICKET: As predicted, the Zurich Hermanus first X1 made short work of Brackenfell last Saturday, needing only 42 minutes to conclude an innings and a 42-run win. Brackenfell managed only another 9 runs as Willem du Toit and Derek Brand tore through the tail, taking 2 and 3 wickets each. Du Toit finished with 10 wickets for the match, a first for the tall paceman. This,

along with his 41 in no time in the first innings, earned him a share of the Man of the Match award alongside Lee Thomason whose 118 in the first innings set the match up for Hermanus. Skipper Brand was outstanding and took 5 for 8 in the second innings. This weekend Hermanus hosts Spes Bona for another 2-dayer and with the home side building up a head of steam, one can-
