Fire forces major evacuation

However paraat the teams of firefighters, helicopter crew and roleplayers were, as well as community members who pulled together in hours of need, were it not for the heavenly sent rain that fell at the right time, the outcome of the fire on Thursday/Friday last week could have been devastating.

Evacuees accommodated at churches because of fire threat cers, and the mayor herself, went from door to door to Berghof residents to tell them to evacuate. Officers, neighbours, friends and family, ambulance services and staff all helped to alert and evacuate residents of the two retirement villages, who were accommodated at the Dutch Reformed Church in On-

rus (Onrus Manor residents), and the residents of Kidbrooke at the United Church in Hermanus. News of the fire threat was also shared and spread on social media networks. Overstrand Mayor Nicolette Botha-Guthrie visited the control room and fire scenes to evaluate the

Residents of Berghof, Chanteclair and two retirement villages, Onrus Manor and Kidbrooke, had to evacuate in the midnight hours of Thursday 15 January after a fire, that started in Hawston around 15:00 that afternoon, jumped across the road and spread over the mountain. First it spread towards Karwyderskraal and then later in the evening, fuelled by a gusting northwestern, the inferno raged over the mountain to the Onrus side. Flames reportedly shot up as highas30metres,destroyingallthe trees and vegetation in their path. While the helicopter crew was able to water-bomb the flames, they had to stop when the light faded, which saw the ground crews then doing battle. The area was declared a Code Red as the flames, spot fires and thick smoke posed a threat to the lives and homes of these residents. Rudi Fraser, traffic chief, was in charge of the evacuation exercise. Law Enforcement and police offi-

“The decision by all the role players was not taken lightly, and was made to safeguard your health and safety, while the fire department teams do their job. We have also called for back-up from the firefighting teams from Cape Town and they are on the scene,” the mayor explained. “Although this is not the most comfortable night for you, do get to know and love each other, and sharethismoment.Andbeassured, we know we are paraat.” But if it wasn’t for the rain that started falling from 03:00, the mountain fire would have spread towards Hermanus. By 05:00 the fire was under control, leaving a scorched mountain and smouldering patches here and there, and the evacuees could return to their homes by daybreak on Friday. There was no loss of life or damage to property reported, nor were any of the fire fighters injured. The cause of the fire is being investigated.

Thursday 15 January: At around 15:30 a bush and veld fire was reported to Overstrand Fire, Rescue & Disaster Management east of Hawston High School. The first vehicle arrived on the scene at 15:40. Due to strong winds reaching 46 km/h, the fire jumped the R43 and spread towards the Hawston mountain range. More resources were requested by the initial officer on the scene and four additional firefighting vehicles with 15 crew members and three senior offi cers of Overstrand Fire and Rescue were deployed. Aerial and ground sup port was requested, which consisted of one spotter, one helicopter and a Work ing on Fire ground team consisting of 21 members. Overstrand Law Enforce ment, Traffic and SAPS were also re quested to help with traffic, crowd con trol and other related matters. Due to zero visibility and thick smoke, the helicopter could only start bombing the fire half an hour later. The fire spread towards Karwyderskraal and at 20:15 it was confirmed that the fire had de scended above the crest at Berghof and Chanteclair. Vehicles and firefighters were diverted to these areas to assist. At 22:15 a Code Red was declared to Provincial Government through the Overberg Districts Municipality and ad ditional resources were requested. Three type 1 urban pumpers and one water tanker were received from the City of Cape Town and a samil was re ceived from Overberg District Munici pality. Precautionary evacuation proce dures commenced just after 23:00 at Berghof. Later at both Onrus Manor and Kidbrooke Place. Friday 16 January: At 00:10 the fire was reported to have reached Sandbaai, near Curro, and four vehi cles were activated to contain the fire. Due to the heavy rainfall which start ed at 03:00, the fire was brought under control and ground teams were with

Hotel housing Stormers offers extra rooms JANINE VAN DER RIET The Emmerson family from Chanteclair and Berghof was among quite a few families who are grateful to the Windsor Hotel for accommodating them during the fire after they had to evacuate their homes. Blake Albert, general manager of the Windsor Hotel

says they received a phone call from Juan Mostert from ADT at 01:00 on Friday morning requesting assistance. “Although we were running high occupancy with the Stormers inhouse, we still had a few rooms available. At the end of the day we accommodated quite a number of people and

of course we did not charge any of them. It is our role in the community to stand together and not make a profit out of a potentially tragic event such as this. As a token of thanks and to the brave firefighters we have extended an invitation to have breakfast at The Windsor Hotel.”

RAGING FIRE: Dr Wolf Barth from Chanteclair wants to congratulate all the security forces who worked excellently and together. “We heard about the measures in the community hall and that was great. They even had food, not only for the people, but also for dogs and cats. The security forces informed all owners from the houses to be ready to leave the house when the fire was coming close to the houses. We are proud of all the people and are happy to live as Germans in such a town with such a good cooperation.” PHOTO: DR WOLF BARTH

Berghof in first line of fire On Thursday 15 January the Emergency Services of the Overstrand Municipality were put to the test. As residents of Berghof Estate we were in the front line. When the blaze was noted it was on the far side of the mountain. A few hours later it was obvious that it was going to be driven by strong northwesterlies across the crest of the mountain, and the Emergency Services started showing a presence. Fire engines, police vehicles, a tree felling team, and traffic police appearing to know exactly what their roles were. We were warned at about 21:00 that we might need to evacuate, and to prepare to take out essential items and animals. At 23:00 a knock at the door requested us to evacuate. At all times there was no panic, and we realised that mock exercises must have been performed several times in advance to prepare for the real thing. Eventually the wind direction changed, and rain arrived earlier than expected and started dousing the flames. We were able to return to our home shortly. Well done, Overstrand Emergency Services.

JC DAMANT

My vrou en ek woon in Onrus Manor Aftree-oord.

“Domma en personeel was wonderlik. So georganiseerd, daar was nie een oomblik paniek of bekommernis nie.”

Kidbrooke residents stand together JANINE VAN DER RIET Kidbrooke residents spent the night at the United Church where Rev Dr James Gray played the piano. He says he did this “as music is a source of great calm and peace”. Avis Hartley, chairlady of the residents committee of the care centre at Kidbrooke, added that the evening had been traumatic and left some people stunned, but there were lighter moments too. “When Rev Gray saw me, he jokingly said: ‘I knew I could get you in my church, one way or another.’” Some people lay on matrasses, or stretched out on the pews, while others sat in chairs, but, says Hartley, the love and care from the Kidbrooke staff, carers, sis-

The kitchen at United Church was a hive of activity to serve refreshments. This photo was taken around 02:00 on Friday morning. PHOTOS: CILENE BEKKER ters and matron, providing them with enough blankets and cushions, kept them warm and safe during the night. The 200 residents, as well as 28 people staying in the care centre, were evacuated shortly after midnight. Some of the residents went to stay with family, while the rest were taken in private cars and the Kidbrooke bus to the church, said a representative of the care centre management. “We are very proud of everyone for their co-operation. And very thankful to Fire and Rescue, ambulance personnel, the traffic department and law enforcement.” Rev Gray commented that this night brought people together in a time of need. “People discovered their humanity.”

Helpers and friends offered words of support to residents of Kidbrooke who gathered at the United Church, many of whom arrived with their carers and animals and still mostly clad in pyjamas and gowns.

Gemeenskap staan saam JANINE VAN DER RIET

“We evacuating, please help!”

Yusuf Sujee and Stephen Mandes, South Africa’s youngest Ultimate Braai Master team winners, are now the new owners of the Restaurant at La Vierge in the Hemel-en-Aarde valley.

Tikka Boys now at La Vierge A year ago Stephen Mandes and Yusuf Sujee (both 26) worked as junior sous chefs at the De Grendel Restaurant with no idea how their lives were going to change in the span of twelve months. Without any expectation Yusuf submitted some recipes to enter the third season of the Pick n Pay sponsored Ultimate Braai Master competition and was surprised to be called for the regional auditions in Cape Town. This random act launched the two friends on a journey of visiting and cooking at twelve locations covering 9 000 km in two months and winning the competition to become South Africa’s youngest Ultimate Braai Master team. They succeeded in passing all the braai tests and tasted victory as the Tikka Boys on 4 December 2014. Having worked at award-winning restaurants including the Cape Grace and the Mount Nelson, the braai master friends had to change their game from five star cuisines to breakfast, lunch and supper – all prepared on South Africa’s national pastime – the braai.

Host of the show, Justin Bonello, reported that the Tikka Boys showed what great things two good friends could achieve around a fire. Unbeknown to the team, Hermanus was part of their new future. In his entry submission Yusuf mentioned Hermanus as his favourite out-of-town destination and both braai masters have visited Hermanus for special holidays, yet never thought that this might become their new permanent home. With R500 000 prize money in their pockets and a new Renault Duster to explore new destinations, they found the Restaurant at La Vierge for sale and took on another challenge – a mere two weeks after their success as Braai Masters. Mandes has since moved to Hermanus with his supportive wife Melissa and can now be found cooking in the kitchen, while Sujee is taking a long-planned holiday before returning to the kitchen. The duo has plans of developing a food and wine-pairing menu complementing the La Vierge wines. Visitors can look forward to a new and interesting menu. – FRIEDA LLOYD

CELEBRATING 33 VINTAGES: The Hamilton Russell Vineyards team celebrated their 33 vintages of pinot noir and chardonnay with a lunch party at Anthony (photo) and Olive Hamilton Russell’s home, Braemar, on the property, on 13 January. In his speech Anthony remarked: “We have a tendency to think that old means staid and new means exciting, but this can be a mistake for wineries, where some of the most original and exciting developments and new practices are coming from producers with a long history and deep experience. The relationship we have with wine is like a friendship. The more we put in the more we get out. And to me the wines most worthy of prolonged friendship are those that tell the story of place at a point in time, not just the story of grape variety.”

vier 60 jaar saam

Some other options for concerned parent KOMMENTAAR Welgedaan Eiendom, besittings en menselewens was in gevaar met die brand. ’n Kode Rooi is aangekondig. ’n Mens kan seker vra: “Wat as?”

Hermanus ‘just did it’ again with open hearts The Boxing Day 2014 collection and distribution of food was again a huge success. There were generous gifts of money and food from churches and private homes, fruit from Fruit and Veg, and discounted whole chickens from Gateway Spar. Churches gave directly to needy families in their areas and a team distributed food to eight churches in Zwelihle and from there pastors personally took food to the homes of those in need. Many, many gave thanks and feasted on the wonderful Christmas fare. Hermanus “just did it” again.

ELVIA BURY

Thank you to all the good people I would so like to thank all the relevant people who helped Sparklekids over the last four years. A total of 28 young people from Zwelihle, Grabouw, Hawston etc. are this year studying at tertiary institutions, thanks to people who believe in this initiative. Each and everyone of the students that we are involved with have passed nicely and are committed to breaking out of poverty towards self support through hard work. (We will know in the next few days whether four more have been accepted.) All of them are studying courses such as education, engineering and nursing, which will give them a good chance for employment. The two young students of 2013 became the ten of 2014 and are now the twenty-eight of 2015. Gratitude from the heart to each and everyone who helped this incredible journey along. Wonderful birdlife with water feeder bottles With reference to the letter in last week’s issue, “Is Banting for the birds?” In 2006 we saw these bottles for the first time at the Hospice Care Centre in Humansdorp. Godfried Potgieter started them to keep the patients busy – doing something while earning some money as well. We bought a bottle and also got talking to Pottie. My husband and Pottie started perfecting these Sunbird Water Feeder bottles. Since then a lovely piece of art with wire, tomato sauce bottle (All Gold), extended tops, were made by them. When Grootbos had the big veld fires a couple of years ago, we were contacted to supply waterbottles as the birds had no way of getting any water. Birds that make use of the water feeder bottles are the Cape sugar birds (male with long tail) that arrive in our gardens by the end of August and stay until middle February in the Hermanus and Overberg areas. Here they have their young ones, and teach them the life skills that birds need. This is the scene with talking, fighting around the water bottles and banting.

When the youngsters are ready, they all take to the veld where they come from. Our little sunbirds are the ones that really enjoy the water feeders. They have long beaks like the Cape sugar birds. The weavers have a ball with the water – but, with the extension fitted to the top, their beaks are too short. They will sip the drops dripping from the tops. The white eyes enjoy the same. We have never seen wagtails drinking from the bottles. Again, their beaks are too short. But give them a little cheese and you will have a visitor for life. The mossies just sit and watch the world go by. The instructions supplied in the bottle are there for a reason. Follow them, with not too much sugar, sit back and enjoy our wonderful birdlife in Hermanus. PS. We had a visit from a pea-hen (pouwyfie) on Sunday; she never stopped eating, then had a short rest and took to the road again. Now and then two Egyptian geese will also come around to ask for a slice of bread and clean up all the wild bird seeds.

Baboons shot and captured near Stanford On Saturday 10 January a mature lactating female baboon was found trapped in the Stanford area. Nearby were the remains of a further five baboons. All had been shot. On close inspection the one skeleton proved to be that of a juvenile which had been shot in the body area with a shotgun, broken ribs and shot pellets testified to this. Also, the animal must have suffered until eventually succumbing as it was found perched on a tree stump which it must have crawled to before dying. The caged female baboon showed signs of having been in the cage for many hours, through the heat of the day, in the full sun. The cage was a drop-door of the type farmers use to catch porcupines. Without a doubt the farmer would have shot her when he eventually checked his trap. Law enforcement was called in after numerous unsuccessful attempts to get help to release her, including calls the Hermanus CapeNature (closed for the weekend and no-one on standby). But a call to Toitjie of law enforcement saw two officers on the scene within 20 minutes. When the officers released the baboon it was discovered that there was a baby hiding in the bushes nearby because when the baboon ran off, she turned, ran back and scooped up a baby from under a bush. With the baby clinging

to her, she ran for the trees and mountains. Apparently the case and photos have been turned over to CapeNature for investigation. If baboons are a problem for wine/fruit farmers in the area, surely they can hire someone to patrol, like the Voëlklip baboon monitors do, to keep baboons away during the critical time before harvest. Baboons are seldom seen in the Stanford area and one wonders just how many are left and how many have already been killed. If the farmer has a permit to cull, then why is he indiscriminately trapping and killing the baboons? There is no excuse for cruelty to animals, whatever the reason, there is always a kinder method of dealing with a problem.

CONCERNED ANIMAL LOVER STANFORD

Justin Lawrence, public relations officer for CapeNature, responds: CapeNature is currently investigating the incident to build up concrete evidence for a case. People taking the law into their own hands and indiscriminately shooting baboons will always be of concern to CapeNature. It remains illegal to do so, whether or not there are baboon monitors. We encourage communities to report illegal baboon feeding by members of the public to CapeNature or the Overstrand Municipality.

Re: letter “Something must be done about the bullying at school” HT/15 Jan. I feel that the letter is a misrepresentation of Curro school and its leadership. We, as parents, should protect, nurture and teach our kids to our utmost ability. We trust that teachers take their responsibility and duty seriously, which they are legally bound to and get paid for. This is where Unhappy Parent has to show the same trust and responsibility toward her children’s teachers involved. My son was involved in an unfortunate incident, being a ‘newbie’ at school. I was outraged when I finally dragged information about the incident out of him. I made an appointment with Mr Mentz. He phoned me back and asked if he could handle it without my involvement. I can happily report that Curro Hermanus has the best team effort and success rate for listening to kids, handling kids and restoring their self-esteem. Unhappy Parent, I want to ask that you maybe reconsider the course of action your concerns about your kids are on. My opinion is if you take your kids to another school, maybe the vicious circle of them being ‘different’ will just be continued. Will you please consider talking to your kids, trying to involve them in finding solutions for them to empower themselves? Will you please communicate with the teachers involved, until they understand your concerns, the facts of what’s happening and the kids/ culprits involved? Will you consider making an appointment with a professional psychologist, to listen to your kids about concerns they maybe don’t share with you? Will you please contact the parent class-representative and have a conversation with her? Will you please contact the phase-head (’fasehoof) (Gr R or foundation phase) of Curro school to have a conversation with him/her? Will you please consider making an appointment with the principal to voice your concerns? Dear Unhappy Parent, please consider your kids’ happiness, they need guidance and practical advice on how to cope in this confused world of ours, exactly what my two kids currently receive in abundance from Curro school and their leadership!

MARIETJIE VENTER

Curro unfairly tainted It is with sadness that I read the letter of a parent lambasting Curro Hermanus unfairly. Firstly, Curro is not a “posh” school (Somerset College is a posh school), it is a private school and a good one at that. Secondly, you do not pay for perfection as there is no such thing in a school, you pay for a great education, excellent curriculum, superior facilities, small classes, good discipline and Christian ethos, etc. Bullying is found everywhere and I am sorry your child had to suffer. We recently met a couple who removed their two children from the public school due to bullying and teasing. Curro takes such matters very seriously and the parents of the offender are called in for joint disciplinary action and monitoring. Unfortunately it sometimes takes time to work through. There is adequate supervision but no teacher can have eyes on every single child at all times and bullies in all schools know that. Trying to create a hype by drawing in the so-called “other” children leaving the school because of bullying is unsubstantiated, the exaggeration and timing of publishing is noted. Children leave for various reasons (very seldom), often financial. Amongst Mr Mentz’s many qualities, the fact that he loves the children, stands out above all. Curro is a healthy school with good growth every year. The saying seems to be true, that the highest trees get the most wind. I hope this matter will be closed now. Letter shortened - Ed.

Today (18 January) on a hike up to beacon on Rotsberg we encountered a large troop of baboons. In all the years walking on the mountain the baboons allowed us to walk right up to them as evident from photos, completely unperturbed. The numbers of young seem to have multiplied over the years. Baboon monitors low down in Voëlklip looked helpless. From the number of baboons around and over the house at the top of 10th Avenue this year it is evident that numbers have multiplied out of control, let alone the effectiveness of monitors to control them. Surely in this 21st century a more scientific approach with electronic tagging monitoring their move-

Leon Steyn, Environmental Specialist, Overstrand Municipality answers: The Overstrand Municipality’s last baboon count this week stands on 30 baboons, part of the Fernkloof troop. For the past five years, the number never exceeded 33. The Hamilton Russell troop is

around 57, but they are scared and never come to town. The Vogelgat troop consists of 30 baboons, but they are also scared and have not been seen close to town for the past three months. The Fernkloof leader lost two female baboons in a short period and is now protecting the remaining troop and babies against people who want to harm them. The male leader of this troop recently chased two residents in Voëlklip, one wetting him with a hosepipe and the other screamed at him, which caused a negative reaction. If you see a baboon, do not shout at him, do not stare at him and do not show your teeth. Phone the baboon monitors on 028 313 8111.

Overstrand nie so ‘bloody warm’ Bloedig warm! Die antwoord is seker; bloedig is so drie of vier grade bokant baie warm, sê hy.

Your beautiful white smile can now be enhanced by a youthful face and body, because Dr Linda Riddell, a local dentist who established the Dental Studio @ Hermanus, has added Health and Beauty @ Hermanus to her portfolio of treatments.

Dr Riddell moved her dental practice from Main Road to large new premises on the corner of College and Mitchell Street in the CBD. She has made good use of the space, by adding a suite of salon treatment rooms over and above her dentistry rooms. Besides offering cosmetic dentistry and teeth whitening, Dr Riddell has taken ownership of Diminish, a salon which offers body fat freezing, technically known as cryolipolisis. “I have always offered Botox and fillers,” says Dr Riddell, who trained and worked in the UK for 15 years. 13 FINMONITOR: Olie – ’n onbekende speelveld vir 2015 HermanusTimes

Sakegids Business Guide

’n Voorbeeld hiervan is voedselpryse.

Barley farming encouraged in Caledon South African Breweries (SAB) recently introduced their Better Barley Better Beer programme to invited media in Caledon. The programme encourages and supports sustainable farming practices among South Africa’s barley farmers by focusing on water usage reduction, improved carbon footprints, soil health and clearing of alien vegetation, as well as the protection and restoration of ecosystems. “Better Barley Better Beer (BBBB), in partnership with the World Wildlife Fund for Nature of South Africa (WWF-SA), is in its pilot phase in the dry land area of the Southern Cape and in the irrigated barley areas in the Northern Cape, and will run for about two years,” said Jan Coetzee, the project extension officer. The programme involves a total of 26 barley producers – 15 in the dry land area and 11 in irrigation, who have either voluntarily opted to participate or hold important conservation assets on their properties. These assets include endangered veld, important water catchment areas and critical species. Through structured engagement and advisory support, BBBB is aimed at empowering barley farmers to understand and implement sustainable farming practices. The programme is an important element of SAB’s global sustainable development framework called Prosper. Prosper highlights tangible targets to be achieved by SAB over the next five years in the areas of responsible alcohol consumption, securing water resources, reducing waste and carbon emissions, supporting small enterprises, including emerging farmers, and the support of responsible and sustainable land use for brewing crops. Farmers with critical conservation assets will be supported in engaging in biodiversity stewardship to protect and restore ecosystems. The stewardship concept is a new way of achieving conservation protection by creating positive, proactive partnerships with private landowners and conservation bodies such as WWF-SA. SAB intends for the BBBB key metrics to be systematised into accepted industry standards, much like the Barley Passport it introduced in 2005. The Barley Passport contains detailed information on chemicals applied on the produce and only that which is registered

The three producers who are part of the pilot programme are from left MG Lotter, owner of Klipfontein, Jan Coetzee, project extension officer of South African Breweries, Richard Kriger, owner of Boontjieskraal and Josias le Roux, owner of Langhoogte. will be purchased by SAB. BBBB allows SAB to build on its strategic business objective to help grow the local barley industry and secure its future growth and sustainability. This is in line with South Africa’s strategic plan for sustainable agriculture and the Department of Agriculture’s policy for sustainable development. Through BBBB and other sustainable agriculture initiatives, including the construction of a multi-million rand SAB Maltings plant in Johannesburg and its Go Farming programme, which is geared at establishing and supporting emerging farmers, SAB intends to source more than 90% of its barley requirements from local producers. “Having a fully-fledged and sustainable local barley sector means SAB can rely on contracts with local producers for approximately 93% of its brewing requirements, enabling us to hedge against volatile global commodity markets and, just as importantly, to keep tighter control of quality and ensure a sustainable barley growing sector,” says Thinus van Schoor, general manager

SAB Maltings. Historically, SAB has played a pioneering role in the South African barley industry. It began growing barley locally more than three decades ago, a strategic attempt by the company to become self-sufficient. Since those early days, SAB’s support for the local barley industry has strengthened considerably and the company is today regarded as a critical role player. The strategic industry partnerships it has developed, as well as its close working relationship with producers, is what has helped to yield successes and drive further sustainable growth. “Our collaborative approach within the agricultural sector has proven to be the most effective method in creating sustainable growth, which is a key objective of any SAB investment. The existing knowledge and skills within the industry are invaluable to success,” says Van Schoor. About 160 000 tons of barley are currently grown in the Southern Cape and a further 55 000 t (64 000 t in 2013 and expanding to 94 000 tons in 2014) are produced in the irrigation areas of the Northern Cape. SAB helped establish South Africa’s barley growing sector in the 1970s. The next phase of the BBBB pilot will be the roll-out of specific guidelines to small scale and emerging farmers in the Taung area. These guidelines will be tailored to focus on training the farmers rather than auditing them.

NATURE MATTERS: Did you know ...Spider wasps (family Pompilidae) are wasps that hunt spiders to feed their offspring. The female’s toxic sting paralyses the spider, which she then drags to her nest. There she lays a single egg on the paralysed spider (which stays fresh since it’s still alive). The egg hatches into a larva, which slowly consumes the protein-rich spider. The larva then pupates and eventually hatches as an adult wasp. Adult spider wasps eat pollen.

IN MEMORY OF WHERE IT ALL BEGAN:LIMITED EDITION LAUNCHED THIS YEAR

Land Rover launches a year of Defender celebrations QUICKPIC

Land Rover has gone back to the place where it all began to start a year-long celebration of the iconic Defender. A unique 1 km sand drawing at Red Wharf Bay in Anglesey, UK, marks the launch of two exclusive limited edition models and the beginning of an exciting new chapter in the Defender story. As UK production of the current Defender enters its final phase, Land Rover will use 2015 to celebrate its global automotive icon. Land Rover vehicle line director, Nick Rogers explains the significance of recreating one of the world’s most iconic vehicles: “Passion and enthusiasm surround everything we do with Defender, and that will never change. With a history stretching back 68 years, this is a Land Rover that has thrived for decades on its unquestionable capability and iconic shape. I am now lucky enough to be one of the many enthusiasts at Land Rover committed to creating a fitting successor to the legendary Defender.” To mark the announcement Land Rover has created the largest sand drawing ever produced in the UK. A Defender outline measuring a staggering 1 km across was drawn on the beach at Red Wharf Bay in Anglesey using a fleet of six Land Rovers. The unique image is a tribute to the moment in 1947 when the engineering director of Rover, Maurice Wilks, first sketched the shape for the original Land Rover in the sand of Red Wharf Bay and proposed the idea to his brother

The Heritage and Adventure are all powered by Land Rover’s proven 2.2-litre diesel engine and will go on sale locally in Q4 2015, in limited numbers. PHOTO: QUICKPIC Spencer, Rover’s managing director. “My father met his brother on the beach at Red Wharf Bay and made a drawing in the sand of how he thought the Land Rover could be made,” said Stephen Wilks, son of Maurice. “That was the start of it all, the conception of Land Rover.” The Wilks family owned land on the Welsh island and Maurice wanted a versatile vehicle that could double as a light tractor and offroader. His forward-thinking design was christened the ‘Land Rover’, the outline of which we now rec-

tion Wagon. The immaculate Series II once belonged to the Wilks family and in memory of the moment originally enacted by their fathers, cousins Stephen and Nick Wilks, the sons of Maurice and Spencer Wilks respectively, were on hand to take part. They helped to draw the continuous 4,52 km line – the length of 1 118 Defender 90 Station Wagons – into the sand with just minutes to spare before it was erased by the incoming tide. The event witnessed the debut of the Defender Celebration Series; two exciting new limited edition

ognise as the Defender. Creating the giant piece of temporary artwork at Red Wharf Bay required a fleet of six Land Rovers, each towing a 3,6 m agricultural harrow to draw the unmistakable outline of the Defender in the sand. The vehicles chosen for the race against the Anglesey tides chart the evolution of the Defender from its introduction in 1948 to the present day. A Land Rover Series I, II and III were joined on the beach by a Ninety from the eighties, a Defender 90 Hard Top, and a Defender 110 Sta-

models which each celebrate a different element of Defender’s unique history. The Heritage and Adventure are all powered by Land Rover’s proven 2.2-litre diesel engine and will go on sale locally in Q4 2015, in limited numbers. Land Rover is also investigating the possibility of maintaining production of the current Defender at an overseas production facility, after the close of UK manufacturing. Any continuation would see low volume production maintained for selected fleets and special vehicle applications for sale outside the EU. Limited Edition Defenders The Heritage Edition is inspired by early Land Rover models and mixes nostalgic design cues with modern creature comforts. It is identified by distinctive Grasmere Green paintwork and a contrasting white roof. A heritage grille and HUE 166 graphics, recalling the registration plate of the first ever preproduction Land Rover nicknamed ‘Huey’, also identify the Heritage model. The exciting new Adventure Edition is aimed at Land Rover customers who relish the great outdoors and embrace the Defender’s ‘go anywhere, do anything’ attitude. It comes fitted with additional underbody protection and Goodyear MT/ R tyres to boost the Defender’s already class-leading all-terrain capability. Unique decals and a leather-trimmed cabin ensure the Adventure Edition stands out from the Defender crowd. In total more than 200 of these limited edition Defenders are destined for South African shores. Pricing will be confirmed closer to launch.

care. Sr Annetjie Squires also joined the Overstrand Hospice patient-care team recently, on 1 December 2014. Kobus Esterhuyse, Overstrand Hospice: general manager, says Sr Annetjie will soon receive palliative-care training, along with their relief nurses in the outlying areas. He says the eight-month course is very intensive, and all palliative nurses are required to complete it. Esterhuyse says: “Our patients are in good hands. We also have four volunteer doctors on the team, and two of them have extensive palliative care experience.”

Golf roundup DOGS play in rather difficult conditions with Julian Shaw We have again had some beautiful weather, so lots of golf was being played. We did though have a quick 21 mm of very welcome rain last week, which has turned the course into a bright green paradise. This rain and wind did however coincide with our ladies golf day so we have no ladies results this week. Men’s Day: Wednesday saw 150 gents teeing up in a better ball stableford format. Coming out on top on the East course were the successful pairing of André Gouws and John Clifford on a huge 47 points. Winning the South course on a respectable 48 points were Hennie Smit and John van der Plas (the lessons with Terry Westbrook are obviously paying off nicely), and showing everyone how to play this game on 51 points on the North course were the pairing of Faan Pretorius and again our secret weapon Reinhard Buhr. There were nine 2 clubs and the ball pool paid to 44. The best players of the day, both on a nett 65, were Faan Pretorius and Brian Cain, whom I still maintain has the best practice swing in the club. Saturday: We had absolutely fantastic weather and a field of 175 golfers played an alliance competition which is always relaxing. Winning the East course on +22 were Peter Sulley, Brian Ridley, Rein Kelder and Johann Krog. Taking top honours on the North course were Jan Mulder, Gerhard Visage, Halfee Maree and Guri Visage on a super +19, and leading the scoring on the South course with a massive +23 was the regular four-ball of Rob George, Brad George, Peter Cawdry and Paul the “club fiddler” Vorster. Well played guys. Thanks to my four-ball, we managed a second placing on the North course and good to see the ladies also featuring on the leader board, achieving a second place on the South course. Don Slade again shot below his age with a gross 78. I think he is getting younger... Best play of the day: The ever quiet John Reynell on a nett 65. Thanks to our greens staff for a super course and until next week keep calm and go golfing.

Kleinmond - Individual Stableford (Log) / 4BBB: Conditions were difficult on Tuesday as a pumping Southeaster destroyed a large field who think that golf is tough enough already without interference from the elements and therefore should be played indoors. On occasions like this, cream normally rises to the surface, but there are exceptions to every rule and “Dogsbody” scraped in by a point with an average round by playing slightly less bad golf than usual. “Hanging Judge Robinson” perverted the course of justice by bribing two guests to score less than him, but he was beaten by the “Jolly Green Giant”, thus proving that size does matter. The “Dachshund’s Friend” has

At the Ayala prizegiving were, from left: Mark Gibbs (Personal Trust), Ben Butler (tournament secretary), K Barnard, Tikkie Rossouw, Roy Gallaway and Philip Graham.

Tight finish at 88th Ayala Some of the teams have been competing in the tournament for more than 26 years, and this year it was Peter Quinn’s team from

Caledon who took top honours, with Kleinmond coming in as the runners-up. The Hermanus team, skipped by Riaan Pienaar, came in third, with only one point separating them from Kleinmond. Mark Gibbs from Personal Trust, who will sponsor the tournament again next year, handed out the prizes and trophies. He

praised the Hermanus Bowling Club for the well-organised tournament. Blackie de Swardt, president of the Hermanus Bowling Club, thanked everyone involved, with a special pat on the back going to Jan van Niekerk and his helpers in the bar, who quenched the thirst of the 200 or so hot and sweaty players.

huis.

like oefenveld.
